What is your favorite aspect of traveling and if you are a travel blogger, why did you decide to create your website?

I love enjoying new experiences in my travels. In the last few months I’ve been on a helicopter trip in Eastern Europe, enjoyed an Everest flight from Kathmandu, watched ice hockey in Finland, driven right across Nepal and into India, done clay pigeon shooting in Ireland, eaten bear (not a whole one), been on a wine tasting tour – by bike – in South Africa and had a Russian banyan (like a sauna) – naked – in Lithuania, and visited an improvised comedy show in Greece.

Lots of variety and fun!

How many continents have you visited?

Four

How many countries have you visited?

30+

What is your favorite destination in the world and why?

Home. I know it might sound a bit strange for someone who loves to travel, but there’s something wonderful about returning home, too, particularly when you live somewhere as beautiful as we do.

We are sandwiched between two of England’s most beautiful national parks – the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

If money/time was no object and you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you travel to and why?

There are many places I’d like to go but if money and time were an issue (time is a major limiting factor for me at the moment), then I guess I’d choose somewhere distant such as New Zealand. That’s somewhere I’ve yet to visit and I think I would love for the scenery if nothing else.

Which of the following gadgets do you take on your travels?

Laptop, Phone and Camera.

What is your preferred method of transport?

Running!

I guess it depends what I’m doing but distance running is a bit of a hobby of mine. I’ve done 6 different marathons to date (3 in England, 2 in the US and 1 in Scotland) and am deciding on which to attempt next.

Complete the following, “Everywhere I go, I visit….”

…with my camera. I do love my photography but wish I had more time for it to hone my rather limited skills further. I would love to go on a trip one day that combines my love of travel with a photography course.

Here is your chance to sell yourself and your website! Tell us some more information about yourself, what your travel philosophies & future plans are and anything else that people may find interesting to read about…

I have worked in tourism for over 25 years, and specifically in online tourism marketing since the Web first came along. I am a Director at The Dedicated Partnership Ltd. which specialises in this area, as well as Editor of A Luxury Travel Blog.

I am also a Director of Kendal Holiday Cottages Ltd. so am spinning several plates at once!

  1. Great interview. Sounds like Paul has had a very busy start to the year. Next time we are looking for a break in the Lakes I will be checking out his holiday cottages. 🙂

    • Definitely agree Tam that Paul has had a great start to 2014 with some great travels. I am sure the remainder of 2014 will be just as impressive.

  2. love the comment that home is your favourite place Paul – so true! No point going away to amazing places and not loving home! Glad that the family gets to enjoy it with you – again, no point going to all these places if you can’t share them with someone important!

    • I couldn’t agree with you more Anna! I have always followed the philosophy that travel begins at home and Paul has certainly emphasized this here. I am also from Northern England so know exactly what he is referring to in terms of the natural beauty and landscapes that are on offer in this part of England. Makes me very envious that he is able to see this on a daily basis, and I really didn’t appreciate it whenever I lived there!

  3. Great interview with Paul, and it is lovely to hear him talk about home being his favourite place. I think that’s one of the things about travel, it’s fantastic to do it, experience new things, people and culture – but if you don’t enjoy coming home, maybe you need to think about this. I totally agree with Paul about photography – some kind of a travel photography workshop would be wonderful.

    • Thanks for your remarks Jackie, it really was a honour to interview Paul and learn more about his travel philosophies in general. It’s interesting to note that even the world’s leading travelers still appreciate their home because as you correctly indicated, there is no point in traveling the world if you don’t appreciate where you come from/live.

  4. Hi Paul, I see from the photos that you do quite a bit of travelling with your family. Learning about different countries and cultures first-hand is the best education you could give them. And I expect it makes things even more wonderful for you and your wife to be able to share your adventures with them and see the world through their eyes. I wander if they’ll start a travel blog themselves one day, maybe in a few years?

    • I think traveling with your loved ones makes exploring the world even better! I couldn’t wish for a better travel partner than Heather, purely because we both love much of the same things and our chemistry allows us to really get the most out of our experiences. I am sure Paul’s kids will follow in his footsteps and become world travelers and really appreciate the moments they experienced learning from a travel expert.

    • Definitely agree with that Noel that for the most part there is nothing like coming home! But whenever you are home you are always itching to get back out and see somewhere new in the world 🙂 That’s the beauty of travel though.

  5. Great interview – and I also agree, England is a beautiful place to live, I absolutely love it here and it makes travelling even better to know we have it to come home to!

  6. Thank you for all the lovely comments, everyone. I’m a bit embarrassed to see myself being described as “a true legend in the travel blogging world”, mind! There are lots of people out there who are better at it than me – I was just lucky, I suppose, to be an early adopter and get established that way… plus it helps that my usual day job is in internet marketing for the travel industry. 😉

    • Your website is one of the most renowned in travel blogging circles so of course it is a honor to have you speak with us 🙂 Sure it helps that your day job is in the travel industry but you still have to put the time and effort to make it work which you clearly have done! Cheers Paul!

  7. Paul is someone to truly look up to in the travel blogging world, his site is impressive and it’s obvious he works hard at it and does a wonderful job! I love reading his blog for wanderlust and motivation, it makes me work harder so that I can reach my goal of experiencing a luxury vacation sometime in my life. Thanks for the great interview!

    • Cheers Samantha, I completely agree with all of your comments! Of course Paul is very modest as well when he states he doesn’t like being classified as someone worth looking up to in the travel blogging world 🙂 If we ever hit the numbers his Luxury Travel Blog currently does….well, I think we will all be happy campers!

  8. Great to learn more about Paul, who incidentally lives just ‘up the road’ from me. And living in the beautiful Lakes and Dales area I can totally understand why he loves coming home, we’re so fortunate to live in one of the UK’s top tourist destinations. And I agree travelling does make home more appreciated, as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that… 🙂

    • Certainly agree with that quote Heather! Northern England is where I am from also so I have to agree even though we may all be a little biased that this is one of, if not the most beautiful part of England.
