Why Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest Is a Beautiful Landmark?

2

In the heart of the Hungarian capital is a medieval castle that at first glance you would think dates back thousands of years. Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest is located in City Park and after visiting here on our recent trip to Hungary, it is certainly an attraction you cannot afford to miss.

On a cold, eerily quiet New Year’s Day, we headed to City Park in search of this wonderfully named castle. The conditions were perfect for exploring such a medieval looking castle. The entrance to City Park known as Heroes Square is gorgeous as it reflects the various Hungarian leaders throughout history. But the real highlight in what you may first consider a quiet park is the unequivocally stunning Vajdahunyad Castle!

Let’s take a look at the history, architecture and iconography of this gorgeous Hungarian castle.

Visitor Information

The beauty of Vajdahunyad Castle is that you can experience the real beauty of this castle for FREE, 24 hours a day. That’s right, entry inside the courtyard is free of charge and allows visitors the opportunity to stroll around the grounds and get a close up look at Alpár’s ingenious design.

Vajdahunyad Castle History

The history of Vajdahunyad Castle is actually more recent than you may think. Construction started on this beautiful medieval masterpiece in the late 19th century and was finished in 1896.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

The original construction of the castle was made out of wood and cardboard, a unique feature which of course didn’t stand the test of time. In the early 20th century, the Budapest local government decided to make Vajdahunyad Castle a more permanent structure using brick and stone and was completed in 1908.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

The original castle was designed by architect Ignác Alpár and even during the reconstruction years, every effort was made to maintain the design of this iconic Hungarian architect.

The castle was constructed to recognize the 1000th birthday of the Hungarian State in 1896 for the Millennial Exhibition, along with the Millennium Monument in Heroes Square and Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda Castle hill that we later explored.

millennium monument in heroes square

However, there is an ironic twist to this story. Delays caused the construction of the castle to actually celebrate the 1001th birthday because history suggests that Hungary was founded in 895AD. Of course, when Vajdahunyad Castle was finally completed, the one-year delay certainly didn’t prevent mass celebrations here!

You may be wondering what is so spectacular and special about Vajdahunyad Castle? Well, aside from the beautiful exterior and overall appearance of the castle which we will explore later, the overall design has an inherent meaning which Alpár intended. His design was supposed to mimic each architectural style in Hungarian history.

Did he succeed? I think it’s fair to say that there is a very distinctive look about this castle and so many different aspects that reflect the various architectural eras that Hungary has experienced.

Architectural Design

From Romanesque to Gothic to Baroque, Vajdahunyad Castle features a number of components in the architectural design that reflect each of these styles. As you begin exploring the grounds, it’s possible that you will notice more artistic styles in the composition of the castle.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest hungary

The medieval feel of this castle dates back to the 11th-century Romanesque era that was prevalent until the end of the 13th century. Vajdahunyad Castle reflects this era through ‘The Church of Jak’ which is an iconic recreation of a beautiful basilica located in the western part of Hungary.

church of jak

The intricate details of the entrance to this church are a typical reflection on Romanesque architecture but perhaps the overall facade and medieval style cloister are more telling examples of how Hungarian architecture was portrayed during the Middle Ages.

Possibly the most beautiful feature of Vajdahunyad Castle are the gothic inspired gates leading to the courtyard. A couple of years ago we received an image of these gorgeous gates and at the time, we had never even heard of this castle in Budapest. Immediately we knew that we had to see this for ourselves!

If you are convinced that all of this architecture portrays a castle reflecting medieval times, perhaps you will be surprised to hear that the gorgeous Baroque era is also apparent throughout the castle.

Myth of Count Dracula

Did you know that the author of Count Dracula, Bram Stoker, may well have been inspired by Vajdahunyad Castle? It’s feasible that Stoker may have visited this castle prior to writing the Dracula novels.

Bram Stoker pictured his Dracula living in the castle of Vajdahunyad, or maybe a similar castle somewhere in the dark and stark hills of Transylvania.

However, a more important aspect that suggests the above question is true is that his focus on the main character was a reflection of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century Transylvanian prince who was in fact imprisoned inside Vajdahunyad Castle for a period of time.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

Are you convinced that this is true? Regardless of your stance here, it certainly makes the visit to Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest even more interesting as you search for clues to support this theory.

Summary

If you haven’t visited Hungary, it’s plausible that you may never have heard of Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest. But once you visit the Hungarian capital, you would be hard pressed to avoid this gorgeous landmark because it really is worth exploring.

We were fortunate to visit here on New Year’s Day when the grounds were relatively quiet and we were able to really explore everything this castle has to offer. Unfortunately, the castle was closed but a return trip to visit the interior is certainly something we can look forward to.

Whether you believe that Bram Stoker was inspired by Vajdahunyad to create the infamous Count Dracula novels, just contemplating this as you walk around the medieval style grounds will make this an even more intriguing experience.

A Guide to New York City – Everything You Need to Know

If you have never visited New York City, you don’t know know what you are missing! Our guide to New York City will hopefully give you an insight into why you should be adding this to your travel schedule sooner rather than later. For those of you that have visited the Big Apple, I am sure you will pick up a few useful tips that you will want to experience on your next trip.

From the best hotels in the heart of downtown Manhattan to some of the hidden gems we have uncovered, this post is a handy guide to exploring one of our favorite global cities. We are also delighted to feature some of our friends from the travel blogging world who have visited New York City and want to share their best insider tips.

guide to new york city

How to Get There?

New York City is served by three main airports, all of which offer easy access to downtown Manhattan.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Various methods of public transportation are available from JFK to Manhattan but the Airtrain offers connecting services through both Jamaica Station and Howard Beach Station. The most common method is to use the AirTrain and MTA Subway system.

Travel time from JFK to Manhattan is anywhere from 60 to 75 minutes.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

The AirTrain Newark connects NJ Transit with Penn Station in Manhattan. Take the AirTrain from any terminal and then hop on the NJ Transit line.

Travel time from EWR to Manhattan is in the range of 35 to 50 minutes.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

New York City buses provide service between LaGuardia and Manhattan. The M60 bus is the most common option for visitors traveling between the two locations. The bus fare is $2.75.

Travel time from LGA to Manhattan is between 30 to 45 minutes.

Other Methods

The best alternative to reaching New York if you don’t fly is to use the Amtrak train service. Frequent train routes are available into New York’s Penn Station or Grand Central Station depending on where you arriving from.

new york city amtrak

Driving to New York City is obviously an option but not one that we would recommend. We have rented a car before at Newark and drove in and around NYC but with the volume of traffic and not to mention the cost of toll roads, it’s not our recommended form of transportation here. However, if you are planning on taking a road trip to nearby states or New York locations then perhaps this is a feasible option.

Where to Stay?

New York City visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation. Whether you are looking for a luxury, boutique hotel or an Airbnb option, the Big Apple has plenty of options. Budget, location, and accommodation type are all factors you should consider before heading to New York City.

Where to Eat?

When you visit New York City, the first thing you should avoid is chain restaurants! There are just too many great local options that you need to experience.

Gansevoort Market

Location: To Be Determined

Gansevoort Market is a great spot to sample fine, local cuisine in a typical marketplace environment. The location was formerly at the High Line in the Meatpacking District of NYC but in early 2016, the decision was made to move this.

Although this is currently in a transition period, the majority of vendors have indicated they will move to the new location once this has been finalized.

This is certainly a gem in New York City and one that you have to experience. Whether you want to experience a ‘bruffin’ filled with ingredients typical of a country around the world or perhaps you would prefer some authentic Mexican at a taco van.

New York Pass

Take advantage of the New York Pass if you are visiting either for the first time or on a return visit. New York City Walking Tours

Participate in a walking tour (either paid or free tours are available) around a neighborhood like SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy. This is a great way to meet a native New Yorker and find out some real insider tips on the best local restaurants, shops etc.

Alternative to Broadway Shows

“If you want to see a show, that’s different from the typical Broadway musical I definitely recommend seeing the interactive show Sleep No More” – Alouise Dittrick from Take Me To The World

Central Park

“Enter Central Park from W 72nd Street (Subway lines 1,2,3 and B,C). Check out Strawberry Fields, The Lake to see the rowboats and continue down The Mall to see the street performers, street artists, and the scene of many romantic comedy movies. As you exit Central Park, hit The Plaza for some afternoon tea.” – Chris Dolce Castillo from Dolce Does Travel

5th Avenue and Beyond

“Follow 5th Ave past St Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building, on my way to the Flatiron Building at 23rd and 5th Ave. It’s a lengthy walk, but at the end is Eataly, where I highly recommend lunch or mid-afternoon stop at their rooftop spot La Birreria!” – Chris Dolce Castillo from Dolce Does Travel

Manhattan Bridge vs Brooklyn Bridge

“Consider visiting the Manhattan Bridge rather than the crowded Brooklyn Bridge. Riding a bike here is definitely more fun as it provides maximum shade and cyclists have their own bike path which is segregated from the walking path, so you won’t have pedestrians wandering into your path every few seconds (this is what happens on the Brooklyn Bridge)!” – Vivian Lee from Miss Happy Feet

The Cloisters Museum

“The Cloisters: A hidden museum in New York. This branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is devoted to medieval art from Europe. Wander around the stunning gardens, take in the view over the Hudson River and see the fabulously reconstructed cloisters which are filled with priceless medieval art, tapestries, and statues.” – Jenny Freedman from A Taste of Travel

The Highline and Chelsea Market

“Check out the Highline Park to see a renovated park built on old subway tracks a story above ground and get a different view of New York City. Stop by Chelsea Market for a snack before you head up there.” – Sarah Kim Chetrit from Tales From a Fork

Best Hidden Views in New York City

“For the best views I recommend going to Press Lounge, Le Bain at the Standard Hotel, The Skylark, The Jane Rooftop, Jimmy at the James Hotel, SixtyFive is one of my favorites as it’s the bar at Rockefeller Center (Tip: no need to pay to go to Top of the Rock when you can go to the SixtyFive bar for free with the same views)” – Christine Tran from Tour de Lust

Radegast Hall and Biergarten

“The Radegast Hall & Biergarten in Brooklyn will shatter your preconceived notions about the cost of eating in NYC. A bratwurst with fries is only $11 from the grill and there’s live music with no cover charge seven nights a week!” – Cherri Littleton Megasko from Bucket List Travel Club

Summary

New York City can never be described in just a few words but the ‘ultimate 24-hour city in the world’ is a pretty good summary! There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to experience that spending just a few days here will only touch the surface of what New York City has to offer.

How to Get to the Isle of Wight – Enjoy a Ferry Crossing

6

Located in the heart of ‘The Solent’ just off the south coast of England is a beautiful island that many people have either never heard of or considered visiting. The Isle of Wight is a spectacular part of England and having experienced this island on numerous occasions, I would strongly encourage everyone visiting this part of the world to consider paying this a visit. If you are thinking about how to get to the Isle of Wight, hopefully, this will help inspire you to take a trip across The Solent!

how to get to the isle of wight

The best and most common way to reach the island is to use one of the ferry companies that leaves from a variety of ports on the English mainland and we want to share our experience and why this in itself is worth taking a trip across to the Isle of Wight.

Is the Isle of Wight Worth It?

Perhaps the first question you should be asking yourselves is whether the Isle of Wight is worth the time and effort required? The answer is almost certainly yes! From the medieval history associated with Carisbrooke Castle to the gorgeous natural attraction of the Needles in Alum Bay, the Isle of Wight is spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do on this small island.

The Isle of Wight Music Festival held annually in June is one of the most popular attractions associated with the island and attracts visitors from all around the world. With legendary artists such as Bryan Adams, David Bowie, The Who and Coldplay having featured on the stage, it’s no surprise to hear that this is a highlight attraction every year on the Isle of Wight.

isle of wight

Another festival iconic to the island may not quite have the stature as the music festival but is equally as popular among visitors. The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival is held outside of Newchurch in the heart of the island and offers an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to show off their most impressive garlic collection, celebrate the summer season and just have fun!

isle of wight countryside

But perhaps it’s the natural beauty that appeals so much about the Isle of Wight. The stereotypical green landscape of British countryside is represented across the island as the untouched landscapes are a sight to behold.

isle of wight

Don’t just take our word for it, consider one of the following options and find out why the Isle of Wight truly is a hidden gem in the English Channel!

How to Get to the Isle of Wight – Port Options

There are currently three different ports on the English mainland that you can depart from in order to reach the Isle of Wight. Depending on your geographical preference or perhaps affiliation with the two ferry companies that sail, this will likely determine which is the best option.

how to get to the isle of wight

Southampton to Cowes

The most popular departure point from England is Southampton. Whether this is because of the iconic significance of Southampton given that it was the departure port for Titanic over 100 years ago, or perhaps because it is more convenient than the other two locations, either way, this was our chosen port to head across The Solent.

maritime museum southampton

While you are waiting in Southampton, take some time to visit the Maritime Museum to learn more about the Titanic voyage and maritime history iconic to this part of England.

Red Funnel is the company that operates daily from Southampton to West Cowes and provides a return service from East Cowes to the same port in Southampton. Depending on whether you have a vehicle or simply traveling by foot, you have two alternatives to choose from.

southampton england

The high speed ‘Red Jet’ ferry service is for foot passengers only and makes a swift crossing in only 25 minutes, reaching speeds of 35-40 knots!

red funnel redjet service

For those that prefer the calmer and ‘cheaper’ option, the ferry service allows visitors to the island to take their vehicle across. In just under an hour, you can be on the Isle of Wight using this ferry option.

southampton to cowes ferry crossing

Both options offer a drink service though the vehicle ferry has more options and a dining area to relax and enjoy the crossing. There are crossings throughout the day and night and generally leave every 90 minutes.

Be sure to check out Red Funnel’s website for the latest ferry timetable.

Portsmouth to Fishbourne/Ryde

An alternative route for visitors planning to head across the Solent to the Isle of Wight is via Portsmouth. Fishbourne and Ryde are both destinations on the island that you can reach directly from Portsmouth and the reality is that either is a viable option depending on where you plan on spending time while on the island.

Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower in March 2012

Portsmouth is one of the many historic coastal cities in England so you would be advised to spend some time here exploring before heading across to the Isle of Wight. One of Britain’s tallest towers outside of London is located here, the Spinnaker Tower, and offers stunning views across the Solent and city from the observation deck.

HMS-Victory - panoramio

Charles Dickens was a popular figure who walked the streets of Portsmouth during his literary heyday in search of his boyhood home and it’s no surprise to hear that today, this house on Old Commercial Road is easily identifiable. Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, the HMS Victory is housed in Portsmouth so be sure to visit here before hopping on the Wightlink ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Lymington to Yarmouth

If you would rather get across to the Isle of Wight in the shortest time possible, Lymington will likely be your preferred port given that you can make the crossing in only 35 minutes.

Lymington Harbour 2

Wightlink also services this port and although it may not have the glamor as Southampton or Portsmouth, it is certainly a viable choice given that it offers the shortest ferry route.

The charming market town and yacht haven of Lymington in the New Forest

Gorgeous coastal walks and strolling around the historic market town are certainly appealing attractions of Lymington, especially if you prefer to make the crossing from the quietest of the three ports.

While Southampton and Portsmouth are cities with a plethora of attractions worth visiting prior to boarding your ferry, Lymington is a more relaxing seaside town that will offer a myriad of beautiful natural attractions along this coastline.

Summary

Three different ports, one gorgeous destination waiting for you! The Isle of Wight is worth visiting from any of these ports and either Red Funnel or Wightlink offer an awesome ferry service that will enable visitors to enjoy the Solent crossing before arriving on the island that is frequently left under the radar around England.

how to get to the isle of wight

Regardless of how you choose to make the crossing to the Isle of Wight, we encourage you to visit the island so that you can experience the beauty on offer here.

Car ferries are a great way to allow you to take your own vehicle at an affordable price. I have experienced the Isle of Wight without a car so even if you hop across as a passenger on the ferry, the public transportation on the island offers visitors the opportunity to explore everywhere.

Have you visited the Isle of Wight previously? What are your experiences using car ferries?

How to Drive the Rock and Roll Highway in One Day

Arkansas may be famous for being home to the Razorbacks, Walmart, and Bill Clinton but did you know that a small Arkansan town was the site of a Beatles visit in 1964? “The Natural State” was actually a popular spot for musicians to play in local bars and nightclubs before going on to greater things in nearby cities such as Memphis and Nashville. Dubbed as the Rock and Roll Highway, a stretch of 111 miles from Bald Knob to Corning, this route is home to a number of iconic landmarks that create such a historic drive.

rock and roll highway

Where is the Rock and Roll Highway?

If you are going to be a true ‘rockabilly’ along US Highway 67 you better learn how to appreciate the heart of “rock ‘n’ roll” and head on down from the ‘hills’ of Arkansas and drive this iconic road.

rock and roll highway 67

Passing through a number of smaller towns, Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway is an interesting drive that you can easily experience in one day. Much of the drive is along open roads with very little to see but there are a few spots that offer an opportunity to appreciate the history in this part of Arkansas.

rock and roll highway 67

We actually started our route in Walnut Ridge given that it is the closest spot from our hometown of Jonesboro. In reality, this is not the ideal starting point as this is located in the heart of Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway.

corning arkansas

We recommend starting at either Corning (if you are heading south from Missouri) or Bald Knob (if you are heading north from Little Rock) to fully experience the route that Elvis or another budding rockstar would have taken.

The Beatles in Walnut Ridge

For a brief few moments, Walnut Ridge was transformed from a small town in Arkansas to a global hot-spot as the Beatles landed here en route from once concert to another. On September 18, 1964, the Beatles finished a concert in Dallas, Texas and immediately boarded a plane destined for a retreat in Missouri prior to their final concert in New York City.

walnut ridge arkansas

Walnut Ridge Airport was a training facility during World War II and its ability to handle large aircraft made this a perfect connection point for the Beatles to board a smaller plane to reach Missouri.

beatles in walnut ridge

Of course, this was a secret landing and just after midnight the Beatles left their large aircraft in Walnut Ridge. But given the scarcity of landings in Walnut Ridge at night, a few individuals made their way to the runway and immediately gasped as they recognized the infamous quartet.

walnut ridge arkansas

The rest of the weekend was spent trying to figure out when the Beatles would make their return trip to Walnut Ridge to board their plane for New York. A large gathering was rewarded when a small plane arrived with John Lennon and Ringo Starr on board.

rock n roll highway

What the Walnut Ridge locals didn’t realize was that Paul McCartney and George Harrison had already arrived about an hour earlier and were sat in a truck watching the spectacle.

walnut ridge airport

Today, the airfield is famous for having an old Southwest Airlines plane transformed into a restaurant which is a unique experience for visitors. Unfortunately, we visited on a Sunday when the restaurant was closed but hopefully, we will have an opportunity to visit in the future and sample the cuisine here.

beatles on the ridge

For many of the Walnut Ridge fans, it was their only chance to see the Beatles in person. To this day, it is a huge claim to fame for this small Arkansan town and it’s no surprise as you leave Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway that there is an intersection devoted to Abbey Road.

abbey road in walnut ridge arkansas

We enjoyed exploring the memorial and looking at the various stores that have been renamed to represent the Beatles landing here, even though it was only for a few moments.

walnut ridge beatles

But it’s not just the Beatles that have made their mark in Walnut Ridge. In fact, the town has constructed a gorgeous memorial known as the Walnut Ridge Guitar Walk located close to the Amtrak train station in Cavenaugh Park.

cavenaugh park walnut ridge

It is designed in the shape of an electric guitar and this colorful walkway has a number of stations with recordings devoted to iconic musicians that shaped the rock and roll era.

walnut ridge guitar walk

Country artists such as Johnny Cash are featured here so this is a great opportunity to learn a little more about your favorite artist, especially before they became the famous musician that we all know them as today.

Pocahontas

A short drive north of Walnut Ridge is another important town on the Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway. Pocahontas is home to the infamous Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway 67 Inn where legendary musicians such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis among others have both stayed and performed.

rock and roll highway 67 inn

Pocahontas may not have the same history as nearby Walnut Ridge but today, it is home to the Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway 67 music festival that takes place annually to celebrate the history that has occurred along this very route.

pocahontas arkansas

The festival is held in historic downtown Pocahontas which is actually a pretty cool area to walk around.

randolph courthouse pocahontas

The Randolph County courthouse is a key focal point in the heart of downtown along with a veteran memorial dedicated to those lives that were lost in World War I, World War II and Vietnam War.

pocahontas arkansas

Located just outside of Pocahontas along Rock and Roll Highway is an iconic radio station that played an important role in the development in Elvis’ success. Perhaps this is Pocahontas’ claim to fame!

In the mid-1950s, after Elvis finally had some success at Sun Studio in Memphis, he made his way along Highway 67 and stopped at the KPOC radio station. After meeting local KPOC announcer Bill Nicholson, they agreed to play one of Elvis’ records on the local station. Nicholson described a young Presley as follows

He was a shy, polite young man

Although this one radio station didn’t necessarily make or break Elvis, it certainly helped get his name out to a much wider audience.

Other Landmarks Along Highway 67

Whether you choose to drive the full 111 miles or alternatively visit just a couple of the iconic landmarks along Highway 67, you will likely want to experience Bald Knob, Arkansas simply because of the name. Bald Knob was named as such from a prominent ridge that served as a landmark to pioneers exploring the region, but it’s no surprise to hear that this town is frequently on lists of unusual town names around the nation.

who dat's in bald knob

Restaurants such as Who Dat’s, serving delicious cajun cuisine and the Bulldog restaurant are both attractive options for visitors driving along Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway. The vibrant colors of the veteran remembrance mural is another landmark that you should experience if you plan on spending a little time in Bald Knob.

Meanwhile, towns such as Swifton and Corning are other alternatives along Highway 67 though apart from a couple of chain restaurants, there is not likely to be much that inspires you to spend time exploring here.

swifton arkansas

Newport, Arkansas is home to the official Rock and Roll Highway 67 Museum and provides more detailed history on everything you can expect to see on this route (alternatively, you can take our word that everything highlighted in this post are the main spots you cannot afford to miss).

Summary

Even if you are not a fan of rock and roll music, taking a ride down memory lane and visiting some iconic spots where music legends performed is certainly a rewarding experience.

From Elvis to Johnny Cash, Arkansas’ Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway has been privileged to see a variety of music legends, so to be able to spend some time learning about this history is a memory we will both cherish.
