Explore Gatlinburg – Drink Moonshine or Visit Ripley’s?

Can you think of any better way of spending a weekend getaway than by drinking the old bootleggers moonshine or visiting a variety of fascinating Ripley’s museums? Ok, so maybe you are not yet sold on this idea but after reading this post perhaps you will be convinced to take a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to sample some of these attractions for yourselves.

Visiting Gatlinburg for a weekend is ample time to see many of the main attractions available here. Also known as the ‘Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains’, Gatlinburg is surrounded by several other interestingly named towns such as Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. But this trip was all about exploring what Gatlinburg has to offer and as we approached this town I have to admit that I was surprised by what I saw.

gatlinburg

We stayed two nights at the Greystone Lodge at the Aquarium and this was a perfect setting not only in terms of location but because of the breathtaking scenery surrounding us. The Little Pigeon River runs through the heart of Gatlinburg and with the Smokies surrounding you, it’s a perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. That is until you head out of your hotel and wander up the main street in Gatlinburg.

Let’s take a look at some of the main attractions that Gatlinburg has to offer.

Moonshine Sampling

One of the most attractive reasons for visiting Gatlinburg is the ability to experience moonshine. Head to either Sugarlands or Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine and sample some of the finest liquor on offer in this part of Tennessee. Of course the state of Tennesse is famous for many things but trying a tipple of moonshine is understandably a popular selling point for Gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg Sugarlands Moonshine

We visited Sugarlands and immediately headed over to the sampling bar area. Standing around the bar, our expert moonshine connoisseur introduced us to six different samples of this delicacy. Each with a different flavor and alcohol level, this was a real test of our character to see if we could go through with the sampling.

gatlinburg moonshine sugarlands

Drum roll please… of course we are hardy folks so it wasn’t a problem and despite neither of us being fond whiskey drinkers, I really enjoyed several of the samples. The butterscotch which added an interesting texture and kick to the moonshine was definitely my favorite though I don’t think Heather was particularly convinced by any of the flavors.

Ripley’s Museums

If you manage to sample all the various moonshines offered in Gatlinburg and are still standing, there are plenty of entertaining museums available courtesy of the infamous Ripley’s chain. ‘Believe it or Not’ (sorry for the pun!), there are seven Ripley’s attractions on offer in Gatlinburg so you really could spend a whole vacation experiencing them.

  1. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium
  2. Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies
  3. Ripley’s Haunted Adventure
  4. Ripley’s Marvelous Mirror Maze and Candy Factory
  5. Ripley’s 3D Moving Theatre
  6. Ripley’s Guinness World Records Museum
  7. Ripleys Davy Crockett Adventure Golf

We visited three of these and despite my personal negativity about Ripley’s being a tourist con, we really enjoyed our time visiting them. Our first experience was in the Guinness World Records Museum. Various exhibits providing astounding fun facts and trivia, combined with a number of interactive displays for all the family to participate in ensure that everyone will have an enjoyable experience here.

From sporting memorabilia to the world’s largest shark jaw, there are ample exhibits on display here for everyone to learn something new.

gatlinburg guinness world records museum

Visiting the Believe It or Not! Odditorium was an interesting and of course, ‘odd’ experience! As you enter the museum, you are faced with a 12 feet Transformer sculpture that we later found out is comprised of old car parts – it’s surprising what you can make out of a few old spark plugs!

gatlinburg ripleys believe it or not odditorium

Inside the museum continues with the oddities but the best aspect as with all the other Ripley’s museums is the amount of interactivity and hands-on experiences visitors can have. This really engages everyone and is certainly a great learning experience for younger visitors.

gatlinburg ripleys believe it or not odditorium

We saved the best encounter until last when we visited the awesome Aquarium of the Smokies. We have visited a number of aquariums during the last 12 months but I have to say that this one in Gatlinburg was one of the best so far.gatlinburg aquarium of the smokies

The shark exhibits are some of the finest we have seen and is a real credit to the aquarium as the sharks have ample space to swim around, unlike many others where it is cruel viewing to see them in captivity. Another cool encounter was in the penguin area, where one penguin immediately took a liking to both of us.

Ober Gatlinburg

I am sure you are wondering if Gatlinburg is just about drinking moonshine and then visiting one of the various Ripley’s attractions. Don’t worry, there is much more to this part of Tennessee that I am sure will convince you to take a trip here to experience for yourselves.

Ober Gatlinburg for example is a great attraction for skiing and winter sport enthusiasts. From the heart of downtown Gatlinburg, you can hop on either the scenic chairlift or aerial tramway to visit Ober Gatlinburg. Due to the inclement weather conditions during our visit, we were forced into taking the tramway as high winds prevented the chairlift from operating.

ober gatlinburg

The views from the ‘pods’ that take you up the mountain are breathtaking and a knowledgeable Ober Gatlinburg guide is available to provide commentary and answer any questions you may have about the surrounding landscape.

ober gatlinburg

Tubing, skiing, ice skating and even a wildlife encounter are available once you reach the summit at Ober Gatlinburg. I was a little disappointed by the whole experience honestly but that’s mainly because we visited out of season so the slopes and tubing were closed.

Hollywood Star Cars Museum

One of the most interesting places to visit was the Hollywood Star Cars museum where you can see all of the famous movie cars on display. Whether you want to see the Flintstone’s car or Paul McCartney’s cadillac, there will likely be a vehicle on display here that you are familiar with from your favorite movie.

Other Attractions

Mini-golf is a popular attraction in Gatlinburg with a number of challenging and scenic courses to choose from. We visited the Treasure Quest Miniature Golf experience which was really cool before heading next door to the Earthquake:The Ride which was a slight disappointment!

Summary

Gatlinburg may not be the first location on the tip of your tongues when considering a visit to either Tennessee or the Great Smoky Mountains. However, it is the perfect location for a fun-filled weekend or if you are looking for somewhere to stay during your hiking adventures around the Smokies.

With plenty of attractions available all year round, Gatlinburg is sure to entice visitors even if it is just to sample that old moonshine that we are all attracted to!

Taking the Golden Pass to Explore the Swiss Alps

If you are looking for breathtaking views and stunning scenery, taking a trip around Europe is probably the perfect itinerary for you. This is exactly what we did during our recent adventure and one particular day trip that we took was stereotypical of why many people consider Europe to have the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the world. The Golden Pass in Switzerland typifies the natural beauty we all associate with Europe.

golden pass

As you pass through the Swiss Alps all the way from Montreux to Lucerne, you will certainly have a much greater appreciation of nature and landscape forms. Whether you are traveling along this route in summer or the heart of winter as we did, the beauty here is unmistaken. We want to share our journey along the Golden Pass and hopefully entice you to take the trip for yourselves.

Golden Pass Route

Based in Zurich for our adventures around Switzerland, we made an early start by using our Eurail pass and taking a trip from Zurich to Montreux. Essentially this journey takes you from the north east corner of Switzerland to the south west corner by Lake Geneva. Passing through the cities of Bern and Lausanne, the scenery along this route is scenic and an eye-opening experience, but this is nothing compared to the route you take leaving Montreux.

golden pass

If you are holders of a Eurail Pass as we were, you can simply hop on the Golden Pass train and enjoy the scenery without having to worry about additional costs with reservations. The route is essentially broken down into three main legs, though depending on how many times you decide to explore Swiss villages along the way, it could be several more.

  • Montreux to Zweisimmen
  • Zweisimmen to Interlaken (Either Interlaken Ost or West)
  • Interlaken to Lucerne

I would highly recommend using the Eurail Rail Planner app to organize your itinerary and determine the best schedules that fit your needs. Please be aware that if you are wanting to take the Golden Pass Scenic railway, this train only departs at certain times so planning ahead is critical if you want to board for example the panoramic train.

Scenery in the Swiss Alps

After boarding the Golden Pass Scenic Train in Montreux we made the journey through the Swiss Alps to the town of Zweisimmen.

golden pass

Passing through idyllic Swiss villages along the way and climbing higher and higher through the Alps, it is near impossible to use words to describe the scenery you pass by. Unfortunately taking pictures out of a train window is not easy, especially when the sun is shining brightly and reflecting against the snow packed landscape. But we wouldn’t have had this any other way because traveling through the heart of the Swiss Alps with sunshine and snow is a perfect combination.

golden pass

From Montreux to Zweisimmen, the journey starts passing by Lake Geneva and then begins to weave into the Swiss Alps through the vineyards and to the town of Gstaad. Depending on how long you plan to spend along the Golden Pass will determine whether you decide to get out and explore the Swiss villages of Gstaad, Zweisimmen et al.

golden pass

Given that we wanted to complete the Golden Pass route in just one day, we bypassed exploring these towns but definitely look forward to heading back in the future to find some hidden gems in the heart of Switzerland.

Interlaken to the Top of Europe

Leaving Zweisimmen we made our way to Interlaken where we were finally able to leave the train for a few hours and have a true Swiss Alps experience. Passing through the Alps before heading by the Lake Thun shoreline is an exhilarating experience as you peer through the windows of the Golden Pass scenic train. I never realized just how interesting a train journey could be before we visited Europe on this trip. Every journey offers a unique variation but the Golden Pass certainly offers something very different to anything else we encountered.

golden pass

Arriving in Interlaken, just like many of the other towns in the Swiss Alps, it is a popular tourist spot for skiers wanting to test their skills on some of Europe’s most infamous slopes. Although on this trip we didn’t get to experience Jungfraujoch, we would both love to head back there to head to the well-acclaimed ‘Top of Europe’ attraction.

golden pass

Interlaken is certainly a town worth spending a day or two exploring, especially if you want to enhance your skills or even try skiing for the first time.

Final Leg of the Golden Pass

Our time in Interlaken was cut short as we embarked on our final leg of the journey to Bern. Yes, that’s right we decided to rearrange our itinerary so that we could spend the evening wandering around the city of Bern rather than taking the ‘official’ final part of the Golden Pass from Interlaken to Lucerne.

golden pass

This decision was primarily because of the lack of daylight and we figured this part of the scenic journey would be better saved for a return trip to Switzerland. Heading across the Brünig Pass and passing by the numerous lakes and mountain top regions is yet another reason why dividing the Golden Pass into multiple days is a highly recommended choice.

The journey from Interlaken to Bern allowed us to regroup and reminisce on the amazing day we encountered throughout the Golden Pass. Perhaps taking this trip from Montreux all the way to Lucerne is feasible during the summer when there is more daylight, but trying to do all of this in one day in winter is a really tough ask especially if you want to spend some quality time in Interlaken as we did.

Summary

Switzerland is a nation that I am sure many other countries are envious of, not only because of their historical position as a ‘neutral’ nation but due to the abundance of natural beauty everywhere you look. The Golden Pass through the heart of Switzerland passes through the Swiss Alps and is stereotypical of this beauty at any time of the year. Whether you are an avid skier or a rambling backpacker, heading through this part of Switzerland is mouthwatering and a must-see for everyone.

This was one hell of a day trip and I would encourage all of you to experience this if you visit Switzerland. Thanks to Eurail for including this within their pass because it undoubtedly provides a unique and memorable representation of the whole country.

Entering our room, we were immediately surprised by how spacious it was. The most eye-catching aspect aside from the obvious cleanliness and modern decor was the balcony overlooking Gatlinburg and river.

Explore Europe by Train – Our Story

Imagine standing on a platform at a secluded Austrian train station on a freezing cold January evening waiting or at least hoping for the next train to arrive.

If you have any image in your mind right now, it’s probably not all that positive but fortunately the experience of traveling around Europe by train is far from the negative connotations you probably associate with this.

“Let’s explore Europe by train”…these were the words I mentioned to Heather as we planned our our Christmas and New Year adventures. It seemed a crazy idea at first especially as we generally travel by road or air, but the longer we contemplated this, the better it sounded!

explore europe by train

If you read our recent article promoting the amazing Eurail Pass, you will know that we spent a week exploring four countries in Europe. However, rather than simply recommending that you go out and purchase a Eurail Pass for yourself, we wanted to share a more personal experience of the highs and lows of traveling by train.

After reading this, I am convinced that there will be many of you out there that can relate to our experience and by then decide if traveling by Eurail is for you.

Why Travel By Train?

Whether you decide to purchase a Eurail Pass or simply ‘pay as you go’, the first question many people have asked is ‘Why should we travel by train?’ That’s a very valid question and understandable that people have concerns simply because there are other options that are equally as prevalent in this part of the world.

explore europe by train

There are a number of low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet that offer amazing services around continental Europe, and renting a car and driving around is also an appealing way to see some hidden gems.

However, what you don’t get with either of these options is the ultimate convenience and amazing schedule offered by European rail companies. Travel by air and you have to be at the airport at least a hour prior to departure. Travel by car and you run the risk of delays and heavy traffic.

Freedom of Travel

Are you a backpacker?

Are you a family heading on vacation?

Are you a retired couple looking for a trip of a lifetime to reminisce on previous travels?

Whatever your answer is to any of the above questions, traveling by train has to be an option worth considering. Why? Because of the freedom of travel that utilizing the train allows! We headed to continental Europe following visits to Iceland and UK and aside from knowing we wanted to explore Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, we had absolutely no clue where we wanted to go or when we needed to be somewhere.

Here are 5 reasons why in our opinion traveling by train was the best option for us to explore Europe:

  • Save money
  • Flexibility of schedules
  • Convenience of train stations (e.g. location)
  • Relaxation and comfort
  • Less hassle

Could you imagine trying to organize your schedules if you were flying somewhere? That’s the beauty of taking the train around Europe because you have the freedom for the most part of knowing you can just hop on and hop off a train as you please.

Things to Know

Prior to heading to Europe, I will say that we had done a little research on some of the key aspects about traveling around the countries we planned on visiting. For example, let’s look at some of the most important things to do before taking a trip through Europe via train..

  1. Currency – Traveling around Europe is much easier now since many of the countries have adopted the Euro, but for us we planned on having some Swiss Francs available for our time in Switzerland.
  2. Language – I know quite a bit of French and a ‘little’ German which helped when traveling but it’s nice to know that in the majority of Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, English is still a language you can use and be easily understood.
  3. Luggage – This is one aspect I am really happy we planned ahead of time! We took one carry-on suitcase containing our clothes and each of us had a backpack with our electronics and other essentials.

The Station Experience

Let’s set the scene as we embarked on our journey around Europe by train. We have spent two amazing days exploring Rome after flying into Rome Fiumicino Airport and our journey around Europe is about to begin. Dragging our suitcase and backpacks along with us, we head from the Hotel Caravaggio in the heart of downtown Rome to Rome’s Termini Train Station.

explore europe by train

Walking into a train station for the first time in our lives was actually more nerve-wracking than either of us imagined. We were immediately greeted by a couple of females offering to help us purchase tickets. We quickly felt a little unnerved and realized they were not legitimate helpers, rather they were the typical folks waiting at train stations try to con tourists out of cash by helping them and anticipating tips in return!

We may have sounded a little rude by telling these folks to “get lost” but after trying the first couple of times to be courteous and they don’t pay attention, you really have no other choice.

explore europe by train

It was interesting to note about 15 minutes later the local Italian police arrived on the scene and took one of these girls away for harassing another tourist. Meanwhile we had taken our seats, typical backpacker style, on the floor of the station terminal as we waited for our number to appear on the screen to get our Eurail Passes validated.

explore europe by train

I didn’t realize how interesting it can be to just sit at a train station and either people watch or contemplate all the journeys you could take. I guess it’s similar to the airport experience, except with a Eurail Pass you literally can hop on most trains whenever you feel like it (aside from those requiring a reservation of course!)

The Train Experience

Boarding the Frecciarossa high-speed train in Rome was a definite ‘Welcome to European Train Journeys’, especially as we sat in the first class carriage. This was certainly a luxury experience and far more comfortable than I was anticipating.

explore europe by train

However, I will say that regardless of whether you are traveling first or second class, the comfort levels are both excellent and likely to be superior to any expectations you may have. The journey to Milan took a little less than 3 hours and was a care-free experience as we were both able to relax in the comfort of the first-class cabin.

explore europe by train

Not all trains however are as luxurious as the Frecciarossa. But despite taking a variety of trains throughout the four countries we have nothing but positive encounters to share. We traveled first-class on all of the journeys and the first thing you notice when you head for these segmented areas on the train are just how quiet they are.

explore europe by train

Very few of our journeys did we experience more than a handful of other travelers in the same cabin as ours. Undoubtedly this enhances your freedom and ability to relax, although during one of our Swiss journey’s we did hear the wrath of a German speaking individual call us out for talking a little too loud on a ‘quiet’ part of the train.

explore europe by train

Summary

Whether you are a believer in train travel or prefer to stick to airlines and car travel, take a moment to consider all of the pros and cons of your decision. I will be the first to admit that prior to our European rail encounter, I would never have considered taking the train over either options. However, after such a positive experience I really think that train travel is a viable option worth considering.

explore europe by train

There is something magical about sitting on the train as you pass through one country to another taking in the breathtaking scenery. Stunning views overlooking the Italian lakes of Como, Lugano and Maggiore or bypassing the Matterhorn in Switzerland is something unequivocally beautiful.

For travel bloggers, it is the perfect setting because you can grab your laptop or travel journal and write to your heart’s content with a gorgeous backdrop to reflect on.
