Do You Love Football? Enjoy an Old Trafford Stadium Tour

3

If you love football, it’s a no-brainer that you will be familiar with one of the most iconic stadiums in the world – Old Trafford. If you have any plans to visit the city of Manchester, you would be crazy to not consider taking an Old Trafford stadium tour. Home of one of the world’s biggest sports teams by the name of Manchester United, Old Trafford is not only a location famous for the plethora of footballing talent that has graced this field but also because of the rich history that surrounds this football club.

Take a moment to contemplate all of the legends that have set foot on this playing surface. Sir Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to name just a few (I’m sure there will be some MUFC and football fans around the world that will argue these names that I have thrown out!) are some of these key figures that have walked through the tunnel onto this hallowed turf.

When we headed back to England on our recent week visit to spend time with family, we decided now was the time to experience the awesome Old Trafford stadium tour. Let’s take a look at exactly what you will see and why you will be raring to add this to your itinerary, even if you are not a Red Devil fan!

Old Trafford Stadium Tour

Old Trafford is located in the heart of Greater Manchester, just a short distance from the Salford Quays and in the suburb of Stretford. A visit to Old Trafford on a non-match day is certainly going to be much easier than dealing with the 75,000+ fans that can be found at most home matches.

Parking is convenient if you are just visiting for a stadium tour but again, if you are heading here on a match day, I would strongly consider taking public transportation as parking can be a headache.

Old Trafford – Home of the Red Devils

The history of Old Trafford dates back to the start of the 20th century when construction started in 1909 and the original stadium was opened in 1910. If you choose to embark on an Old Trafford stadium tour, you will be lead around some of the most historic landmarks while visiting Old Trafford alone will take you along some of the iconic streets surrounding the stadium that have been named after some of Manchester United’s greatest stars.

Sir. Matt Busby Way is the main street that Old Trafford is located on but recently Sir. Alex Ferguson had both a stand inside the stadium and also a street named after his successful tenure at the helm of Manchester United.

Simply walking around the grounds at Old Trafford makes you have goosebumps on your back as you realize just historic this stadium is in the world of football.

As we strolled around the outside, we caught a glimpse of two of the most iconic memorials in world football. Again, Sir. Matt Busby can be seen by the Manchester United Megastore as he peers down at all of the fans that walk around the stadium before entering.

In front of this statue is another tribute, this time to the club’s “holy trinity” comprising of Dennis Law, George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton (entitled “The United Trinity!”)

Enough about the history of Old Trafford because you could easily spend all day reminiscing about this historic stadium but instead, let’s hop inside and take a look at what you can expect on your guided tour.

The Theatre of Dreams

After spending a few minutes wandering around the museum, we headed to the first floor where we met our friendly tour guide who introduced herself and immediately started our tour of Old Trafford. It didn’t take long before we entered the “Theatre of Dreams” as we stood about half way up the Sir Alex Ferguson stand overlooking this historic pitch.

old trafford stadium tour

Our guide gave us a brief history of the stadium and then shared some interesting facts about the pitch itself, most notably the construction which is a “Desso GrassMaster” (combination of natural grass mixed with artificial fibers).

manchester united old trafford

The view of the surface was slightly obstructed by a number of lights that were being used to create artificial sunlight, clearly an example of the intricate details a football club goes to in order to ensure the playing surface is perfect.

old trafford stadium tour

Standing in an empty stadium creates an eerie silence but it does give you an opportunity to close your eyes for a few moments and contemplate the sound of 75,000 fans cheering on their beloved Red Devils.

old trafford stadium tour

Manchester United are renowned for having some of the passionate fans in world football and it’s no surprise to hear that every season they sell out almost every match that is played at Old Trafford, including cup competitions.

The tour continued by heading inside the stadium as we passed by pictures of some of the iconic legends associated with Manchester United, before walking out directly in front of the away fans contingent at the Stretford End of the ground.

old trafford stadium tour

This is a great spot for taking photographs of the stadium as we were at ground level and were able to admire the magnitude and size of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and opposite Sir Bobby Charlton stand.

Behind the Scenes – The Changing Rooms

Ready for your moment in the spotlight? After passing through the press room where the likes of Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson gave some of their infamous post-match press conferences, we headed to the home and away changing rooms to see what the current day players experienced before and after a match.

old trafford press room

As we entered the home dressing room, we were greeted by all of the current Manchester United match day squad shirts on the hooks.

Whether you are a Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Wayne Rooney fan, you have an opportunity to take a selfie with your favorite player.

It may not be the same as actually taking a picture with the real player but it’s a pretty close second!

old trafford stadium tour

The away dressing room is in stark contrast to the home as it appears very basic but according to our tour guide, it’s intentionally done this way as all football clubs generally ensure the home dressing room is equipped with better decor and equipment.

manchester united away dressing room

You have to make the home advantage count for something right! It was certainly a little strange to see some of Manchester United’s iconic stars shirts in here, including David Beckham to represent when he played for AC Milan on his return to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

old trafford stadium tour

Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robin Van Persie are a couple of other examples of United legends that have graced both dressing rooms.

Walking out of the Tunnel

Leaving the dressing rooms, we headed into the tunnel and prepared for our moment of glory as Manchester United players (or Liverpool if you found yourself on the opposing side!)

old trafford stadium tour

The background music started and the referee (aka our tour guide) lead us down the tunnel and into the Theatre of Dreams.

old trafford stadium tour

We weren’t able to walk on the playing surface but we did have the opportunity to walk alongside the field and sit in the dugout where the manager and substitutes sit during the match.

old trafford stadium tour

This was the perfect end to our tour and we even saw the original tunnel that is the only remaining part of the original 1910 stadium, having survived the bombing that destroyed much of Old Trafford during World War II.

It’s appropriate that this tunnel was renamed the Munich Tunnel in 2008, as a memorial for the 50th anniversary of the 1958 Munich air disaster.

The Museum

After bidding farewell to our tour guide after an incredibly informative experience around Old Trafford, we headed back inside the museum to admire some of the trophies that Manchester United have won over the years.

The Champions League trophy is perhaps the most prestigious and can be seen inside a revolving cabinet in the heart of the trophy room but if you are a true Red Devil fan, the 13 Premier League trophies will create amazing memories of Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.

Walking through the Hall of Fame gives you an opportunity to see all of the players that have worn the Manchester United shirt and offers tributes to some of the legends that stole the hearts of United fans around the world.

There is also a poignant tribute to the 1958 Munich Disaster which killed a number of the Manchester United players and staff.

Summary

I think it’s fair to say that any football supporter or sports fan in general, would be CRAZY to not want to experience the Old Trafford stadium tour. Not only is this the home to one of the world’s iconic football teams, it is a place steeped with rich history and heritage that you immediately feel as you stand inside the stadium.

Heather is an avid fan of the “Red Devils”, so having the opportunity to visit the Megastore after the tour and purchase some official merchandise to take back across the pond was certainly something that she enjoyed.

old trafford stadium tour

Although I am not a United fan, I will never forget the Champions League final in 1999 at the Nou Camp in Barcelona when they were trailing 1-0 heading into injury time against Bayern Munich. One of the most famous turnarounds happened during “Fergie Time” and that will always stick with me as one of the great football memories of all time.

If you have the opportunity to visit Manchester (we always strongly encourage folks from the States to head to other parts of the UK rather than just staying in London!), be sure to add an Old Trafford stadium tour to your itinerary!

Aratiatia Dam – How to Enjoy the Full Force of the Waikato River?

Nature has a strange way of capturing your attention when you consider the power it possesses. It’s only in times of natural disasters such as major flooding do we realize just how much water can impact our lives, so having the opportunity to watch a controlled flood via the opening of a dam is an experience we can all learn from. The opening of the Aratiatia Dam located in the Taupo region of New Zealand is a great example that we recently watched from an amazing viewpoint.

Aratiatia Dam

The Aratiatia Dam may not be one of the more infamous dams around the world but the landscapes throughout the Waikato gorge make this one of the most incredible experiences.

Having spent the morning experiencing the breathtaking sight of Huka Falls just a few miles from the Aratiatia Dam, we headed to this man-made attraction looking forward to seeing how powerful the Waikato River really was.

Aratiatia Dam

Let’s take a look at two very distinctive canyons before and after the Aratiatia Dam opened.

Aratiatia Dam

Aratiatia Dam Information

The Aratiatia Dam opens three times each day (four times daily in the summer) releasing 80,000 liters of water in a short amount of time. As you will see from our images, the instant change from a calm river canyon to the onrushing sight of waves crashing through this gorge is incredible.

Aratiatia Dam

Here are the daily times of the dam opening:

  • 10:00 AM
  • 12:00 PM
  • 2:00 PM
  • 4:00 PM (Summer only – October to April)

aratiatia dam

We are no experts on the topic of nature but having watched this attraction in full force, I think it’s fair to say the old adage “Don’t Mess With Fire” could easily be changed to “Don’t Mess With Water!”

Aratiatia Dam new zealand

Important Safety Tips

I want to emphasize the importance of staying safe when visiting attractions like this so please be sure to read these safety tips that I have paraphrased in certain parts but are all applicable to the Aratiatia Dam.

Aratiatia rapids

Unfortunately, there have been horrendous fatal stories of swimmers enjoying the calm waters of the Waikato River and ignoring the sirens from the dam but when you see the power of this water with your own eyes, you realize this is not something to be arguing with.

Aratiatia Dam

Be sure to follow these guidelines if you are intending on visiting these rapids because it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry:

  • Stay out of the Aratiatia Rapids at all times. Never swim or kayak in this area, especially minutes prior to the dam opening!
  • Observe all safety warnings and signs. Treat the gorge and downstream pools as operational and live at all times, regardless of whether there are active sirens.
  • Fences define safe areas and difficult terrain also forms a natural barrier, so don’t even attempt to find the ‘perfect’ viewing point if it is beyond a barrier.
  • Sirens blare at intervals before each release of the water.
  • Follow the safety signs that are located throughout this attraction!

Enough of the negative stories…if you abide by the rules, you will have an amazing time watching human intervention and nature creating an epic experience!

Aratiatia Dam

Overlooks and Hiking Trails

The beauty of watching the opening of the Aratiatia Dam is that there are a number of awesome overlooks and vantage points where you can appreciate this. If you have enough time and want to appreciate the full extent of the experience, it’s probably wise to watch this multiple times from various overlooks.

Aratiatia Dam overlook

If you have no desire to go hiking, you can walk across the bridge that crosses the dam and admire the canyon below you as the water comes crashing through the moment it opens.

Aratiatia Dam canyon

Alternatively, there are a couple of hiking trails that are easy to navigate and provide a close-up view of the canyon. We opted for the shorter of the two trails and honestly, this appears to be the best location rather than the furthest point though from there you can look back and appreciate the full extent of the canyon.

Aratiatia Dam overlooks

A short 10-minute walk along a gravel path leads to the final stretch which is the most challenging as you clamber down a couple of rocks to the viewing platform. There are a couple of levels to the platform, so dependent on personal preference you can choose where you want to watch the Aratiatia Dam opening.

Aratiatia Dam

We arrived about 15 minutes prior to the show and had our choice of finding the best viewing point. Fellow visitors continued to arrive while the sirens could be heard indicating the dam was opening in a few minutes (there are multiple sirens at different intervals to give you notice of the imminent opening).

Aratiatia Dam

The moment the dam started to open the floodgates literally opened! I am not sure what any of us were really expecting but the first few minutes are quite surreal as the water slowly fills the first pool close to the dam.

Aratiatia Rapids

However, the moment the water spills over into the gorge, it begins rushing through with nothing in its way to stop the Waikato River from flooding. The waves crash through the gorge like a Formula 1 car zipping through a chicane at high-speed.

Aratiatia Dam

The dam gates are left open for 15 minutes during which the gorge is completely flooded and in both directions, a sight of white foam can be seen as the powerful surge continues to drive through the canyon into the calmer waters further downstream.

Aratiatia Dam

Although we didn’t stay until the water levels receded following the closing of the dam, it’s interesting to see how very different it can be after a few minutes of 80,000 liters of water passing through.

Aratiatia Dam

Summary

If you are looking for things to do around Lake Taupo, it’s inevitable that Huka Falls will be at the top of your priority list given that it’s New Zealand’s most popular attraction.

Aratiatia Dam

Be prepared to arrange your itinerary so that you can experience at least one opening of the Aratiatia Dam because the views through the gorge are some of the most spectacular throughout the North Island.

Aratiatia Dam

We enjoyed relaxing at the overlook while capturing some great pictures and videos of this experience.

Aratiatia Dam

We were able to share some live footage of the dam opening to our followers on Instagram and Facebook and I’m sure we will make a return trip here the next time we visit New Zealand. The best part of this attraction – it’s FREE!

Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour – Why Is It the Best Attraction?

5

When you think about poignant places around the world such as Ground Zero, the Berlin Wall, Chernobyl, and Auschwitz, it’s inevitable that Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu will be on this list. We have been fortunate to experience several of these iconic locations across the globe but having visited Hawaii recently, we had the opportunity to take the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour and I have to admit, this is one of the most heartrending and historic places we have visited anywhere.

pearl harbor memorial tour

If you are visiting Honolulu, you would be crazy not to make an effort to head over to Pearl Harbor and experience the sense of poignancy and history that surrounds this attraction today.

Many of the aforementioned attractions have been transformed into “tourist traps” and I personally think this is far from the truth at Pearl Harbor, primarily because the USS Arizona Memorial is the resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed in the tragic attack in 1941.

pearl harbor memorial tour

We want to share our experience taking the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour and after reading this, perhaps you will be inspired to take a trip to Hawaii just to visit this amazing place. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Hawaii also, but this is definitely a place you cannot afford to miss and should be experienced by everyone at least once in their lifetime.

Pearl Harbor History

Everyone has at least a basic understanding of the significance of Pearl Harbor simply because of the role it played in shaping the world we live in today. Without going into an in-depth history lesson of World War II, the events that took place on December 7, 1941, were ultimately the turning point for the United States entering the war and joining the Allies in defeating the Nazis and Japanese, albeit on two separate fronts.

pearl harbor

I realize that younger generations like myself and Heather will never be able to relate to the events that took place but we can still appreciate the heartache and tragedy that everyone associated with this went through.

pearl harbor

I can only imagine what friends and families of those directly impacted by Pearl Harbor go through when they step foot on the USS Arizona Memorial or walk around the museum that portrays everything that occurred.

Our visit to Pearl Harbor was shortly after President Obama and Prime Minister Abe of Japan visited this scene, an iconic date in history given that it was the first time the two leaders of the nations have come together at the spot where Japanese fighter planes struck American soil on that fateful day in 1941.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour Information

It’s no surprise to hear that the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour is extremely popular, especially trying to get tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial. We will share a few insider secrets with you later based on our experience but let’s first take a look at some of the key information if you are planning a trip to Pearl Harbor.

pearl harbor tour

USS Arizona Memorial

There are essentially two ways to get tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial. The best aspect of visiting this iconic memorial is that it is 100% FREE.

  1. Walk-In Tickets – 1,300 tickets are handed out daily starting at 7:00 AM. These tickets include a 75-minute program consisting of a short documentary/movie and a boat ride out to the USS Arizona Memorial. Be prepared to get to Pearl Harbor EARLY if you are wanting to guarantee your spot on this tour because these 1,300 tickets go quickly!
  2. Advanced Tickets – Purchase tickets online up to two months in advance of your expected visit. We found that many of these tickets were already sold out, so for us, this wasn’t a viable option!

There is a third way to get tickets that I will share with you shortly as we share our experiences at Pearl Harbor.

Tour Schedule

The USS Arizona Memorial program is scheduled every 15 minutes starting at 7:30 AM and the final one running at 3:00 PM.

Audio Tours

We experienced a self-guided audio tour of Pearl Harbor and we can highly recommend this option. It’s a great way to learn more information about the events leading up to the attack, during the tragedy and the immediate aftermath.

You can purchase audio tour headsets at the Visitor Information window at Pearl Harbor for only $7.50 and these are great value for the wealth of information you receive.

USS Bowfin Tickets

A visit to Pearl Harbor may primarily be focused on the USS Arizona Memorial but if you have the opportunity to experience the USS Bowfin submarine, this is a great attraction. Tickets are available to tour the submarine and museum as follows:

Adults – $12
Children (Aged 4-12) – $5

If you are a little claustrophobic and prefer to just explore the museum, tickets are $6 and $3. Be sure to check the USS Bowfin website for any price updates.

After collecting our headsets, we started our journey around Pearl Harbor at the two museums which are honestly a great place to start if you need some additional background information on the history here.

The two museums are aptly named “The Attack on Pearl Harbor Museum” and “Road to War Museum” and provide a detailed review of everything that happened in 1941.

japanese attack on pearl harbor

A number of artifacts along with the audio coverage frequently create chilling encounters of the Japanese creating their master plan to attack Pearl Harbor.

pearl harbor tour

Regardless of your nationality or knowledge of these events, you have to appreciate that this was a well-measured and calculated attack that took this key American location by surprise in the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

japan attack pearl harbor

There are a number of videos depicting this attack and I’m sure that anyone visiting Pearl Harbor with a direct relationship with someone that was either killed or affected by the 1941 events, would cringe at the thought of what actually happened.

The recordings of survivors that shared their experiences offer a lasting impression on the Pearl Harbor Memorial tour and this is before you even set foot on the USS Arizona.

The stealthy, calculated risk of the Japanese approaching by air was something that was unheard of and certainly underestimated by the American defenses.

The moment the first line of attacks started by destroying key airbases around Hawaii to prevent American planes from leading a defensive front, the Japanese bombardment continued as they destroyed everything in their sight…most notably the naval warships that were docked in Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Outdoor Exhibits

The audio tour leads you through both museums and then outside to some of the other exhibits that play an integral role in the history of Pearl Harbor.

The “Tree of Life”, designed by architect Alfred Preis, is a symbolic representation of rebirth, renewal and a reminder that we are all interconnected despite the obvious hatred that was present between the two nations directly impacted by the 1941 attack.

A short walk from the Tree of Life is the USS Arizona bell which was salvaged and restored along with one other and today provides a perfect location for visitors to contemplate in a moment of solitude as they gaze around the Pearl Harbor grounds.

Depending on the time of your boat tour out to the USS Arizona Memorial, you may opt to head over to the Contemplation Circle and Remembrance Circle to pay your respects to those lives lost.

The USS Arizona anchor stands proudly on display as visitors walk by but in the back of our minds, we were trying to figure out how we could get on board the USS Arizona Memorial boat tour.

Let’s take a look at how you can experience this amazing tour if you are not fortunate enough to have advanced reservations.

USS Arizona Memorial

If you are unlucky or simply unprepared (I think we fall into both of these categories), you may visit Pearl Harbor without a pre-booked USS Arizona Memorial tour. Don’t worry, there is a third option that I was referring to earlier.

uss arizona

If you walk over to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater shortly before a scheduled tour is about to depart, you will notice an additional line with a board indicating “stand by line”. This is where you can wait and hope for the best. The likelihood is that people will miss their tour and there will be open seats available, so just be prepared to wait and you will have the opportunity to experience this amazing memorial.

uss arizona memorial

The first part of the USS Arizona Memorial is a short video that shows the attack on Pearl Harbor and the damage that was caused to the US naval fleet. At the end of the video, the doors open and you are lead out to the boat dock where you board a small vessel and head over to the USS Arizona.

You have the opportunity to take pictures of the memorial as you approach it but don’t worry if you are on the wrong side of the boat because you will have plenty of chances when you leave to take a picture.

The moment we deboarded and stepped on the memorial, we realized that this was a place that deserved nothing but 100% respect.

There is a somber mood throughout the air as you walk around the memorial and peer over the side as you realize that you are standing over the burial spot of thousands of soldiers.

I think it’s a fitting tribute that these men were laid to rest onboard the USS Arizona and perhaps the craziest aspect is that small amounts of oil still leak from the vessel, yet it is allowed to take place as this is a perfect representation of the “tears of the Arizona”.

Have you ever imagined what life is like onboard a submarine? Visiting Pearl Harbor offers the perfect opportunity to experience this as you board the USS Bowfin and head down inside the submarine.

Summary

What an amazing experience!! There is really no other way to describe our feelings after spending an afternoon taking the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour. You could easily spend all day here paying your respects and learning the details about everything that occurred in 1941 but regardless of how much time you spend here, it’s a memorial you just have to experience when you next visit the island of Oahu.

pearl harbor memorial tour

The USS Arizona Memorial is the undoubted focal point of any Pearl Harbor visit and don’t forget, even if you don’t have tickets or fail to wake early enough to collect one of the 1,300 daily tickets handed out, you can always head over to the stand by line and hopefully enjoy this awesome experience.

Huka Falls – Why You Need to Visit This Natural Attraction?

New Zealand is blessed with having a myriad of amazing natural attractions scattered across both islands. Although we only spent a short amount of time exploring the North Island, we stumbled across many of these breathtaking natural phenomena including Huka Falls located in the heart of the island. If you are not familiar with this raging waterfall, we are confident that after seeing our experience, you will be ready to book a trip to New Zealand just for this attraction alone.

Having spent an amazing week traveling around the North Island, our final day in New Zealand arrived with us both feeling a little disappointed that our time here was coming to an end. We wanted to finish with an amazing experience and decided to take the drive from Hamilton where we had stayed the night before to the Lake Taupo region. I think it’s fair to say the day turned out way better than we could have ever imagined!

huka falls new zealand

Let’s take a look at why Huka Falls immediately caught our attention and provided ample entertainment for our time at this spectacular location. It will be no surprise to find out that this is New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction!

Where is Huka Falls?

Huka Falls are a set of gorgeous waterfalls on the Waikato River connected to Lake Taupo which is just a few miles from this landmark. It may not have the height of some of the world’s most iconic waterfalls but what it doesn’t have in height, it certainly makes up for with power and beauty.

huka falls

Located inside the Wairakei Tourist Park, it is just a five-minute drive from the town of Taupo and is also easily reached from a number of locations around the North Island.

  • Hamilton to Huka Falls – 148 km (1 hr 50 minutes)
  • Auckland to Huka Falls – 273 km (3 hr 25 minutes)
  • Rotorua to Huka Falls – 77 km (58 minutes)

After spending some time at Huka Falls, we headed to the town center of Taupo to explore the lake and downtown area. We noticed that you can actually walk/bike all the way from Taupo to Huka Falls along the banks of the river via Spa Thermal Park and this would certainly be a really cool adventure if time permitted.

huka falls

History of Huka Falls

Did you know that the word “Huka” is a Maori term for “foam”? It’s quite appropriate that these falls are referred to as “Foam Falls” given the amount that is created every second the water flows over the edge.

waikato river gorge

You may also be interested to know that Huka Falls was created because of the narrowing of the Waikato River. For much of the river’s length, it is approximately 100 meters wide but it abruptly narrows as it approaches Huka Falls creating a powerful surge as the water scrambles to get through the narrow gap.

waikato river

Approximately 26,000 years ago, the narrowing of the Waikato canyon was created when the Oruanui eruption of Taupo Volcano took place. Renowned as one of New Zealand’s largest volcanic eruptions, this helped shape the gorge we see today and certainly we can thank this devastating phenomenon for creating Huka Falls.

HERE YOU WILL SEE ONE OF THE GREAT NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD IN ACTION!

Anyone visiting Taupo should take the time to experience this amazing natural wonder because it’s fair to say that everyone visiting here will certainly leave feeling they have seen one of the “natural wonders of the world.”

Adventure Junkies Jet Boat Experience

Did I mention you can actually hop on board a high-powered jet boat and cruise right up to the base of the majestic Huka Falls? Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to wait for the next available jet boat so we had to enjoy the view of the jet boat from the various overlooks at Huka Falls.

huka falls jet boat

Don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed and although I’m convinced nothing can match the actual experience onboard the boat, it’s a pretty good alternative to just sit back and watch.

huka falls jet boat

We strongly recommend booking this experience ahead of time if you really want to don your adventure junkie hat and prepare for the experience of a lifetime. This is the ultimate thrill a minute ride and just watching these folks was enough to send chills down my spine.

huka falls jet boat

The large volume of water flowing over the falls amounts to approximately 220,000 liters per second so imagine taking a jet boat to the base of these falls and feeling the force of the water. The guides driving the jet boats are certainly experienced to know exactly where to go and how to handle this power.

huka falls new zealand

Tickets for the Huka Falls Jet Boat are NZD 125 for adults ($90) and NZD 79 for children under 15. The experience lasts 30 minutes and for only NZD 19 you can have an “instant replay” and do it all over again.

Walking Trails at Huka Falls

Get ready to put on your favorite hiking boots and explore the amazing trails and overlooks at Huka Falls. Regardless of your hiking skills, there is something here for everyone with trails ranging from 5 minutes to 2 hours in length.

huka falls new zealand

We took a couple of the shorter trails to find the perfect vantage points to admire the breathtaking sight of the cascading waterfalls. As we crossed the bridge that connects both sides of the Waikato River, we caught our first glimpse of Huka Falls. There is seriously A LOT of power in the water that is rushing through this gorge and over the edge of the falls.

Another noticeable aspect of Huka Falls is the color of the water. The crystal blue color of the water combined with the vibrant white of the cascading falls and the surrounding terrain create a picture-perfect landscape for avid photographers.

There is a two-hour trail that will wind you through scenic surroundings until you arrive at the Aratiatia Dam, another awesome attraction worth visiting if you are in the Taupo area.

We didn’t have enough time to walk this whole trail but we did take another short hike to gain a better view of Huka Falls from a distance and again enjoy another rendition of the jet boat cruising through the waves to the base of the waterfall.

Summary

We have been fortunate to visit a number of gorgeous waterfalls around the world including Niagara Falls but there was something quite spectacular about Huka Falls that immediately got us “hooked.” It may sound a little cheesy to say that we were “hooked by Huka Falls” but sometimes it’s just appropriate to coin a phrase that actually applies and that’s definitely the case here.

One final recommendation, don’t visit Huka Falls without booking a trip on board the jet boat! This is 100% top of our bucket list for our next visit to this part of the North Island.
