Hamilton Gardens New Zealand – How to Enjoy the Beauty of Nature?

Auckland and Wellington may be the two iconic cities on the North Island of New Zealand but having spent three nights in Hamilton, we would argue that this is equally as impressive and provides a great location to explore other parts of the island. Hamilton Gardens New Zealand is one of the highlight attractions in this town providing a perfect place to visit and appreciate the beauty of nature. Whether you are an avid botanist or simply someone that enjoys the relaxing solitude of a botanical garden, Hamilton’s version is definitely worth exploring.

We never intended on spending so many nights in Hamilton but after taking a day trip to Rotorua, a visit to Hobbiton and then enjoying the relaxing feel of this town, we saw no reason to leave as it was a perfect base for us. We highly recommend spending a day in and around Hamilton to enjoy the downtown neighborhood parallel to the Waikato River that flows through the town and of course, to enjoy attractions such as Hamilton Gardens.

Hamilton Gardens is one of those attractions that you can’t help but fall in love with. As we share some of the highlight spots around this location, you will notice that these gardens are divided into world themes that provide a perfect experience to increase your knowledge about nature from all corners of the globe.

How to Explore Hamilton Gardens?

We decided to visit the Information Center first to try and find a map of the gardens but we found out there is a small surcharge for one of these. We opted against this as we figured a spontaneous walk through the gardens would likely inspire us to explore more.

hamilton gardens new zealand

If you prefer to stay organized, the map will come in handy but there is nothing quite like taking a stroll around a botanical garden without quite knowing what you will stumble across next.

hamilton gardens new zealand

There are five distinctive categories that each of these gardens is grouped into: The Paradise Collection; The Productive Collection; The Fantasy Collection; The Cultivar Collection and The Landscape Collection. We didn’t visit every single garden but we did explore the majority of what we consider to be the highlight attractions here.

hamilton gardens new zealand

Let’s take a look at all of the amazing “themed” garden collections you can expect to see at Hamilton Gardens New Zealand.

Italian Renaissance Garden

Our first stop was the breathtaking Italian Renaissance Garden. If you are familiar with the Italian Renaissance period, you will know that much of this style is derived from geometry and the desire for Italian architects to create works of art that follow geometric principles.

italian renaissance garden

This underlying concept is very apparent throughout the garden at Hamilton Gardens and the spectacular creation is certainly a credit to this era.

hamilton gardens new zealand

High surrounding walls, flat square beds lined with plants and an arched trellis are some of the key components in Italian Renaissance design, all of which are visible in this garden. The focal point is the historic white building at the end of the courtyard, emphasizing the importance of gorgeous grand buildings that are typical throughout Italy’s major cities.

italian renaissance garden

If this is your first stop on your tour of Hamilton Gardens, you will likely be impressed and ready to experience everything else here. However, this was probably one of our favorite spots on the tour and definitely an area where we could sit down and relax in the confines of this garden while appreciating the beauty of the fountain and other features here.

hamilton gardens italian renaissance garden

Don’t be surprised to hear that after walking around everything else, we returned to this very spot to enjoy what I would refer to as ” a scene of ultimate serenity!”

Indian Char Bagh Garden

Heading through one of the narrow passages out of the Italian Renaissance Garden, we approached something very different and unique – the Indian Char Bagh Garden. This is the ‘original’ Paradise Garden at Hamilton Gardens and the phrase ‘Char Bagh’ refers to ‘enclosed four part’ which is fairly apparent once you step inside this area.

indian char bagh garden

Divided by a water feature that channels throughout the garden, the four parts are distinguished by collections of colorful floral varieties. The overall appearance of the Indian Char Bagh Garden is inspired by a small palace in the city of Agra, India which is more commonly known as the location of the Taj Majal.

hamilton gardens new zealand

This palace, known as Lal Mahal, is depicted through the construction of Hamilton Gardens’ equivalent Char Bagh Garden and the intricate details are certainly reflected in the stereotypical Indian design.

indian char bagh garden

The Char Bagh Garden has a very palatial feel to it as you stand under the canopy of the building and admire the courtyard in front of you. Even the walls that surround the garden have been intricately designed and everything here is immaculately maintained to ensure visitors can appreciate the inspiration behind this creation.

Japanese Garden of Contemplation

Ready to experience the ultimate garden of peacefulness? Visit the Japanese Garden of Contemplation to do exactly what the name suggests, contemplate your surroundings and appreciate the inherent beauty.

japanese garden of contemplation

A stereotypical example of a Zen Garden, the Hamilton version epitomizes the Muromachi era of Japanese history through the careful compositions that make up this design.

japanese garden of contemplation

For those of you unaware of the key characteristics of a Zen Garden, simply consider the iconic sight of Japanese temples that I’m sure you are all familiar with.

hamilton gardens new zealand

By creating a feeling of peace and serenity through the design features that represent all forms of nature including mountains and lakes, the Japanese Garden of Contemplation is one spot that you just feel like you have to be silent to fully honor this landmark.

japanese garden of contemplation

As we stood inside the “temple” and looked across the lake, the silence surrounding us truly evoked our senses and allowed us to drift into a moment of thought and realize just how beautiful nature can be.

hamilton gardens new zealand

We all take nature for granted on a daily basis and it’s in times like this can you understand the reality of our surroundings and how much harm we cause through our day to day actions. An appreciation of nature can only help us inspire others to do this and paying a visit to a location like Hamilton Gardens is a great way to open your mind.

japanese garden of contemplation

Chinese Scholar’s Garden

Let’s stay with the oriental influence and head over to the Chinese Scholar’s Garden. This is probably the most impressive and realistic of all the gardens in terms of visitors knowing immediately what they are looking at and where in the world it is affiliated with. Everything you associate with Chinese culture can be seen inside and around this garden.

chinese scholar's garden

I love the architecture and design throughout this part of Hamilton Gardens. It’s one of the larger gardens and there are a number of components as you pass through an archway (the Ting Pavilion is above you) winding through a passageway until you arrive at the stereotypical scene of a Chinese temple and a quirky looking bridge passing over a lake.

chinese scholar's garden

The overall appearance of the Chinese Scholar’s Garden is inspired by the traditional Sung Dynasty but you can’t help but notice some other dynasty’s appearing in the construction of this garden.

hamilton gardens

After crossing the Wisteria Bridge, we headed to the Ting Pavilion where you can feel like you are a Queen or King for a moment and admire the beautiful landscape in front of you.

hamilton gardens new zealand

Behind you, the views of the Waikato River are stunning and this is unequivocally one of the most attractive spots throughout Hamilton Gardens.

hamilton gardens new zealand

Other Themed Gardens

I have focused on four of Hamilton Gardens’ most iconic themed locations from around the world but there is so much more to see at this attraction. We spent three hours walking around and honestly felt like we were moving pretty quickly. You could easily spend a half day or even a full day here exploring the inherent beauty through all these gardens.

te parapara garden

One of the most intriguing that is particularly relevant to the New Zealand locals is Te Parapara Garden, the nation’s only traditional Maori productive garden. Showcasing a variety of traditional cultures, practices, materials and ceremonies, Te Parapara is an amazing attraction to learn all about Maori history.

hamilton gardens

The herb and kitchen gardens offer distinctive smells and allow visitors the opportunity to spot their favorite spices and vegetables that they commonly use in everyday cooking.

hamilton gardens new zealand

Our final stop was in the Tropical Gardens which was extremely colorful and vibrant as attempts are made to create “the luxuriant beauty, color, and fantasy of tropical gardens” around the world.

tropical garden

The natural beauty here is apparent and in conjunction with everything else, it was a fitting conclusion to our tour of Hamilton Gardens (at least until we returned to the Italian Renaissance Garden for a final “Ciao!”)

Summary

Hamilton Gardens New Zealand is a really cool spectacle that is worth visiting if you are planning on spending time in Hamilton. I love how the gardens are divided into themed areas and it’s very apparent that meticulous care has been taken to create environments representative of the nations they relate to.

italian renaissance garden

Our favorite spot was the Italian Renaissance Garden but that should take nothing away from the other areas which combine together to create an awesome experience. Hamilton Gardens is a great place for all the family to visit and it’s the perfect location for kids to learn a plethora of knowledge on botany, world geography, and local Maori culture.

Why the Drive from Banff to Lake Louise Will Blow Your Mind?

7

When you visit the Canadian Rockies, you can be sure that you won’t be leaving without admiring a plethora of spectacular scenery. For those of you heading to the beautiful alpine town of Banff, a day trip to Lake Louise will certainly capture your attention. Why not maximize this trip by enjoying an epic drive from Banff to Lake Louise along the Bow Valley Parkway, as opposed to taking the standard highway route that many follow?

bow valley parkway

Whether you are enjoying the spectacular drive from Jasper to Banff National Park along the Icefields Parkway or simply relaxing and enjoying some of the best things to do in Jasper (or Banff), it’s fair to say that beauty awaits everywhere you look. The drive from Banff to Lake Louise is certainly no different, in fact, I would suggest that the inherent beauty along this route is such that this should be on everyone’s radar before heading to this part of Canada.

drive from banff to lake louise

From hiking trails to wildlife spotting, the relatively short Bow Valley Parkway is an incredible stretch that we immediately fell in love with. As we share our experiences along this route, we hope that you will add this drive to your itinerary. After reading many of our recent posts from our Canada trip, you will note that this area is well-suited to epic road trips…in other words, a perfect environment for us to enjoy a typical weekend getaway!

drive from banff to lake louise

Let’s take a look at what makes the Bow Valley Parkway such a breathtaking scenic route.

Drive from Banff to Lake Louise

If you are planning on enjoying a day trip to Lake Louise and some of the other gorgeous attractions in the area such as Moraine Lake, you essentially have two routes that you can follow.

lake louise

Regardless of which route you take, it’s approximately 57km (35 miles) between Banff and Lake Louise. Both of these locations play an integral role in the overall reputation of the Canadian Rockies as a spectacular destination, with good reason!

drive from banff to lake louise

Iconic panoramic scenes that are ideally suited to postcards, hiking trails that will challenge the most adventurous folks out there and an unlimited number of opportunities to see a myriad of wildlife, make Banff and Lake Louise the ideal locations to visit.

drive from banff to lake louise

Bow Valley Parkway

We have all seen blog post titles that use words similar to what we are promoting here. This route will “blow your mind”…you could be forgiven for thinking that this is just another attempt at creating clickbait but we can assure you, this drive is INCREDIBLE and we hope that our pictures and experiences along this route will literally blow your mind and convince you to visit in the not too distant future.

bow valley parkway

What exactly makes the drive from Banff to Lake Louise along the Bow Valley Parkway so spectacular? Aside from the stunning scenery, visitors on this drive have the opportunity to explore some of the most amazing hiking trails throughout Banff National Park.

bow valley parkway

We will share our experience at Johnston Canyon later, but this is just one example of many hikes you can stumble across as you venture into the unknown and uncover a wealth of natural beauty.

johnston canyon

Another of the iconic landmarks along this route is Castle Mountain, located mid-way along the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise.

castle mountain bow valley parkway

Formerly known as Mount Eisenhower after the American President, there is a gorgeous spot along the Parkway to enjoy incredible views from the pull-off known as “Castle Cliffs.”

drive from banff to lake louise

Johnston Canyon

One of the most popular day hikes throughout Banff National Park is Johnston Canyon, located 25km northwest of Banff and easily accessible from the Bow Valley Parkway.

johnston canyon

Approaching the entrance to this attraction, you will immediately notice the popularity of this spot but that will likely just intrigue you to explore further. Trust us when we say, it’s well worth the effort of scrambling through a number of tourists along the hike!

johnston canyon

Visitors have a choice to make when they start their journey on the hiking trail. Two distinctive waterfalls are the iconic attractions on this trail, the Lower and Upper Falls. Which set of falls you choose to hike to will solely be dependent on how much time you want to spend at Johnston Canyon or perhaps how much hiking you are willing to do.

johnston canyon hiking trails

Lower Falls

The Lower Falls are undoubtedly the easiest option and are only 1.1km from the start of the trail. The majority of the trail is relatively easy with a combination of slightly rugged terrain and catwalks affixed to the side of the rocks making this an interesting and popular choice for those wishing to admire the magnificent sight of the Lower Falls.

johnston canyon lower falls hike

Throughout the short hike, you encounter a number of spots that offer gorgeous views of the canyon. Keep your eyes peeled because you never quite know what wildlife you will spot in the gorge or surrounding area.

johnston canyon

Even in the heart of summer, we caught a glimpse of certain shaded areas that still had ice frozen to the side of the rocks.

johnston canyon

I can certainly see why this is a popular spot for ice climbers in the heart of winter.

johnston canyon

As I mentioned, it’s worth the effort of hiking to the Lower Falls because the final view is gorgeous.

johnston canyon lower falls

There are a couple of spots that you have to experience. Before crossing the bridge, you can enjoy a view of the falls in front of you. Cross the bridge and clamber under the cave for an “up close and personal” view of the Lower Falls.

johnston canyon lower falls

I want to add a caveat here before you head inside the cave (BTW, for the claustrophobic folks out there, the cave is only a few paces before you emerge on the other side – it’s more like a tunnel actually!) with the following statement…

BEWARE…YOU WILL GET WET!!

johnston canyon

Yes, it’s true…if you choose to wander through the cave, you will get pretty wet especially if you choose to stay there for a prolonged length of time. But it’s definitely worth it and in the middle of summer, it’s a great way to cool off before continuing your hike to the Upper Falls.

johnston canyon lower falls

Upper Falls

We thoroughly enjoyed the journey to the Lower Falls and after “cooling” off, we had a decision to make – did we want to continue to Upper Falls or head back down and continue the journey along the Bow Valley Parkway and visit Lake Louise? We opted for the latter option and decided to leave the Upper Falls for a return visit to Johnston Canyon.

johnston canyon lower falls

The Upper Falls are located a further 1.6km (2.7km from the start of the trail) from the Lower Falls. The journey will take you through a trail that meanders away from the river and through lodgepole pine, spruce, and Douglas Fir.

drive from banff to lake louise

For the really adventurous hikers, why not make Johnston Canyon a full day trip experience and head another 3.2km to the Inkpots? These are a gorgeous blend of blue and jade green springs, while the bottom of these pools is composed of quicksand.

johnston canyon upper falls trail

Morant’s Curve

Who would have thought that a curve in the road could be such an iconic location? As you slowly make your way along the Bow Valley Parkway appreciating the beauty around you, it’s inevitable that you will arrive at a point that may alone blow your mind!

morant's curve

Morant’s Curve offers some of the most scenic landscapes throughout this part of the Canadian Rockies. After pulling over in the parking area, you will be left speechless as you peer over the edge and catch a glimpse of the railway line below you and as your eyes glance upwards, the sight of the Bow Valley and the awe-inspiring mountain range in the background will capture your imagination.

drive from banff to lake louise

If you are an avid train enthusiast, this is definitely a perfect spot to capture a gorgeous picture of the train passing through the Rockies. In fact, it’s no surprise to hear that this is one of the popular locations for train photographers to capture this iconic shot.

Summary

Canada, in particular the area throughout the Canadian Rockies, is blessed with having a number of amazing scenic drives. Regardless of where you are staying, you can be sure that a gorgeous drive (short and long) is waiting for you to stumble across. We enjoyed a variety of these during our recent visit and the Bow Valley Parkway was definitely one of our favorites in terms of scenery and action-packed adventure.

drive from banff to lake louise

If you are considering the drive from Banff to Lake Louise, consider the slightly longer option and head along the Bow Valley Parkway rather than Highway 1.

johnston canyon

Decide whether you have time to explore all of Johnston Canyon or if you would prefer to just hike the shorter trail to the Lower Falls as we did. It’s one of those attractions that you will likely want to return to, so don’t think that you have to accomplish everything on your first visit.

drive from banff to lake louise

Be prepared to slow down or stop at any given time because you never quite know what wildlife will be wandering along the side of the road or even an impromptu encounter with something directly in front of you. Either way, it’s an experience of a lifetime and as the title of this posts goes, it will likely “blow your mind!”

8 Polar Explorers That Will Spark Your Wanderlust

As travelers, we all have some crazy stories to tell. But probably the best of them all come from polar explorers of the past centuries. They braved the most extreme conditions and reached the poles despite having none of the tools we have today.

We are delighted to collaborate with our friends, Cez and Agness, from eTramping who have pitched in with some of their favorite dangerous adventurers. The following eight polar explorers will definitely rouse your thirst for exploration.

Each one has a unique story but all of them have one thing in common, their passion for travel and desire to explore the unknown! I am sure we can all relate to this philosophy but let’s see exactly why each of these polar explorers are a true inspiration when it comes to sparking the wanderlust inside us.

Sir Edmund Hillary

We couldn’t have placed any other polar explorers in “first place,” even though this is by no means a Top 10 style list. Sir Edmund Hillary has feats that would make many other adventurers blush at the thought. For one, you might know him as the first man to climb Mt Everest all the way to the top. Along with his expedition partner from Nepal, Tenzing Norgay.

polar explorers antarctica

Not only that, but he also went to both North and South poles. He is known as the first person to reach the southern point using a motor vehicle. In 1985, he accompanied astronaut Neil Armstrong on a flight to the North Pole. Are you brave enough to follow in his steps?

Sir John Franklin

How often can you talk about polar explorers who have also fought in both the French Revolutionary Wars AND the Napoleonic Wars? Having decided that being a Royal Navy officer and knighted by two different kings wasn’t enough, he set out to put his name on the map.

polar explorers

Franklin’s expedition to find the famed Northwest Passage ended in disaster. It also seems that he and his crew disappeared off the face of the Earth. Nonetheless, his name has been commemorated in the farthest regions of the world. There are actually two Franklin Islands right now, one in Greenland and one in Antarctica – in honor of his dedicated exploration.

Robert Peary

Robert Peary isn’t just famous for his magnificent mustache. He is considered to be the first of any polar explorers to have reached the North Pole. We say considered because there are still some researchers who doubt his claim.

For example, his rival Frederick Cook also claimed to have achieved this feat one year before he did. Still, we can’t deny that Peary remains one of the most influential polar explorers to date. His dog-sledding expeditions throughout the Arctic are the stuff of legends.

Sir Ernest Shackleton

Shackleton was also among the polar explorers with dreams of greatness, just as Sir John Franklin before him. He and his exploration team had hoped to be the first people to cover Antarctica. As with Franklin, his expedition didn’t have the desired outcome.

polar explorers antarctica

But this time, the story had a happy ending. While his ship “Endurance” had been ruined by icebergs, he and his crew managed to reach Elephant Island. His most impressive feat, however, was an over 1200 km voyage in a lifeboat – all the way to South Georgia. In the end, all of the “Endurance” crew were rescued thanks to his actions.

Sir James Clark Ross

The second of the polar explorers on this list to be a British navy officer, Ross’s expedition was the first to discover the northern magnetic pole. His trips also took him over to the icy south, where he helped map the shores of Antarctica (including the Ross Sea named after him). If you’re traveling to the continent, you can thank this man – for he helped pave the way for other polar explorers.

Roald Amundsen

If there’s any polar explorers that can match the feats set by Sir Edmund Hillary, it’s this guy. He didn’t climb the Everest, unfortunately, but he was still the first person to reach both poles. Back then, explorers from every corner of the world were “battling” for that feat.

For example, take Robert Falcon Scott, the one who actually found out that Antarctica wasn’t just a bunch of icebergs, but actually a continent. He also raced to the South Pole around the same time as Amundsen, but his crew only reached it an entire month later.

polar explorers south pole

Amundsen also managed to fulfill Sir John Franklin’s dream to traverse the Northwest Passage. That’s a big plus to his exploratory prowess. Not only that, but he also led the first airborne journey to the North Pole. Quite an exciting life, if you ask us – and a worthy rival in skill to Hillary.

Friftjof Nansen

Nansen had won a Nobel Peace Prize for his actions in World War One, and he was an accomplished explorer as well. On the other hand, he had some eccentric ideas about how to reach the geographic North Pole. He believed that developing a ship frozen in drift ice would take him and his crew all the way there. The shipbuilding was a success – but the same can’t be said about his journey.

polar explorers antarctica

After about a year and a half, he eventually settled for dog-sledding all the way there with one of his crew members. They didn’t manage this feat either, but they did get pretty far north. At the time (1895), they broke the record for the farthest north point anyone had reached. We have to commend his efforts – drifting on ice for that long can’t have been very fun!

Salomon August Andrée

S. A. Andrée is a special case among the polar explorers we’ve named so far. He never actually made it to the North Pole, though not for lack of trying. Many important figures such as King Oscar II, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and even Alfred Nobel supported his cause.

polar explorers antarctica

He and his crew had attempted to get there with a hot air balloon ride, but the conditions were too critical to succeed. They still traveled almost 500 km before they met their untimely end in the Svalbard archipelago. Today, if you go on a Svalbard cruise and visit the Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park, you can still see the launch site of one of his attempted expeditions.

Do you have any polar explorers you look up to?

How to Enjoy the Amazing Drive from Jasper to Banff?

21

When you think about some of the iconic drives around the world, the Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies is surely near the top of most lists. It’s one thing listening to reviews of the experience or admiring gorgeous pictures of scenery along this route, but to actually enjoy the awe-inspiring drive from Jasper to Banff National Park is something words or pictures can never do enough justice.

drive from jasper to banff

Having the opportunity to drive this once is something you should all strive for but we felt privileged to have the chance to enjoy this twice, as we headed to Jasper from Calgary before taking this same drive back to spend a few days in Banff. Any route that has breathtaking scenery is going to be a popular attraction but when you construct a road between two of Canada’s iconic national parks, it’s taking the concept of amazing road trips to the next level.

drive from jasper to banff

If you are planning on exploring Banff and Jasper in the next few weeks or months, we hope that some of our recommended spots on the drive from Jasper to Banff (or vice-versa) will be added to your itinerary. For those of you that wish to experience this spectacular drive over several days, we will give you a few suggestions on hotel recommendations along this route.

For those of you that wish to experience this spectacular drive over several days, we will give you a few suggestions on hotel recommendations along this route.

Icefields Parkway

The beauty of the Icefields Parkway, which technically starts in Lake Louise, is there really isn’t an alternative route to take between the two parks so you are pretty much stuck with a plethora of natural beauty…not a bad problem to have right?

drive from jasper to banff

The Columbia Icefields Parkway is one of the world’s most scenic mountain drives that stretches 232km’s (144miles) between Lake Louise and Jasper.

Having spent five hours driving from Banff to Jasper en route to spending 48 hours in Jasper National Park, we caught a glimpse of the incredible beauty surrounding us. If you opt to follow our schedule, you will feel our pain because simply driving the Icefields Parkway without having the opportunity to stop is torture.

We highly recommend NOT following this approach and instead, enjoy all of the incredible spots on the way to Jasper and on your way back!

Drive from Jasper to Banff National Park

Ok, so you are committed to taking the epic drive from Jasper to Banff…our first advice, be prepared to have several hours to fully enjoy this experience. The route itself is approximately 287 km (178 miles) which may take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and wildlife.

drive from jasper to banff

That’s right, wildlife encounters along this drive can have a detrimental impact on the length of time it takes. Realistically, you may need up to DOUBLE this amount of time to fully appreciate the amazing spots that we are going to share.

drive from jasper to banff

For the avid road trippers out there, you will know the benefit of taking your time because there will be countless impromptu stops that you will want to enjoy in addition to any scheduled stops. On our return trip from Jasper to Banff, we had scheduled about 8 stops but by the time we reached our hotel in Dead Man’s Flats, we probably stopped about 15 times (maybe more!)

If you have been living in a shell for the past few weeks and haven’t seen any of our recent blog posts on the best things to do in Jasper National Park or our social media pictures, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. How on earth can a drive be that spectacular? Let’s find out with just a few of our favorite places to enjoy along this route.

If you are considering staying overnight in Jasper, here are a couple of our favorite hotels that we love to recommend. Please be aware that hotels throughout the Jasper and Banff areas fill up quickly, so be prepared to book well in advance of your trip.

Athabasca Falls

Distance from Banff – 160 miles

If you have taken some of the world’s most scenic drives, you frequently have to drive a while before you hit the breathtaking scenery. That is certainly NOT the case on the drive from Jasper to Banff as you immediately stumble across incredible landscapes and attractions after leaving the downtown area.

athabasca falls jasper national park

Despite admiring the gorgeous scenery, we opted to make our first stop at Athabasca Falls. This is a must-see landmark for everyone and if you have a fond love of waterfalls as I do, you will be blown away by the beauty of this one. Renowned as the most powerful waterfall in Canada, as you approach the edge from the viewing platform, you will quickly feel the power that this natural landmark generates.

athabasca falls

One of the amazing features of Athabasca Falls is the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains. From various viewing points, you are treated to the sight of the waterfall (if you are lucky you will see a rainbow through the falls!) with the towering peaks providing the perfect background. It’s undoubtedly one of those picture perfect locations that you have to visit.

Sunwapta Falls

Amazed by the sight of Athabasca Falls? You won’t be on the road for much longer before you have the opportunity to experience another gorgeous set of waterfalls.

sunwapta falls

Sunwapta Falls is a pair of waterfalls comprising of the “upper” and “lower” though, for most visitors, the obvious choice is exploring the upper falls. For the adventurous folks that enjoy a hike, head down the valley to the less crowded lower falls for yet more spectacular views.

sunwapta falls

Sunwapta Falls can be defined as “turbulent water” and although this waterfall is only around 75 feet in height, along with yet another gorgeous mountainous backdrop, this is another incredible place that you should add to your itinerary when making the drive from Jasper to Banff.

Hotel Recommendation

If the Sunwapta Falls area of the Jasper National Park is the ideal place to stay, check out the Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

Tangle Ridge

Distance from Jasper – 58 miles
Distance from Banff – 121 miles

One of the best viewpoints to admire the gorgeous panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies is at Tangle Ridge. As you approach the parking area, you will quickly realize why this is a spot you will want to experience. Interpretative signs are available to give you an idea of the peaks you see in front of you.

tangle ridge

Both Tangle Ridge and Mushroom Peak are incredible mountains and perhaps the really adventurous folks will start plotting their routes to hike to the summit…we opted to save this for a return trip to Jasper!

The towering Mount Columbia is the second highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and can be viewed from this location but regardless of where your eyes wander, you will likely be drooling over the plethora of amazing scenery.

Tangle Falls

Distance from Jasper – 60 miles
Distance from Banff – 119 miles

Click here for directions to Tangle Falls from Jasper

Are you already missing the sight of gorgeous waterfalls? Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait much longer after admiring the views across Tangle Ridge. Located on the side of the Icefields Parkway, Tangle Falls is a multi-tiered cascade which will not only impress the waterfall lovers out there but also offer the opportunity to see wildlife wandering around the edge.

tangle falls jasper national park

We saw a number of Bighorn sheep on the Icefields Parkway before capturing a glimpse of one that had clambered up the side of Tangle Falls. I’m not sure if he knew that he was posing for a picture but it certainly provided a pretty cool shot.

drive from jasper to banff

Tangle Falls is a very “seasonal” style waterfall so depending on when you visit will determine whether you can enjoy a powerful flow or perhaps just a trickle. The view from the edge of the road is gorgeous but if you choose to capture a closer look, be careful when hiking up the side of the falls. It’s definitely a risk/reward journey!

Glacier Skywalk

Distance from Jasper – 60 miles
Distance from Banff – 118 miles

Click here for directions to the Glacier Skywalk from Jasper

Everything included in this itinerary involved a natural attraction, with one exception – the Glacier Skywalk. Controversially constructed at a cost of $21 million (CAD), this structure offers visitors to the area an opportunity to “live on the edge” as they walk out on a glass platform to admire the breathtaking views of the Columbia Icefield.

glacier skywalk

Given that I referenced this was a controversial topic, you may be wondering why I would include this. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and obviously, the construction of this had an impact on the wildlife and overall appearance along this stretch of the Icefields Parkway. However, I personally think this is a spot you have to check out for yourselves and determine whether this is something you are in favor of.

glacier skywalk jasper national park

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Glacier Skywalk and although we are not the most adventurous folks (in other words, we are not extreme skydivers or bungee jump seekers!), this was an experience we would love to do again.

The interpretative walk prior to walking out on the glass platform was thoroughly informative but nothing could quite prepare you for the panoramic bliss that you see once you step out on the platform. Any fears you may have will quickly disappear as your mind drifts away to admire the beauty in front of you!

athabasca glacier

It’s not every day that you get to explore a glacier and participating in this tour is a must-do while visiting Jasper National Park. The Columbia Icefield actually comprises of six glaciers with the Dome, Stutfield, and Athabasca the only ones visible from the Icefields Parkway. The incredible sight of the Ice Explorer heading out on the glacier may just be enough to convince you that this is something you cannot afford to miss.

Renowned as one of the easiest glaciers in the world to access by car, the Athabasca Glacier unsurprisingly attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. It’s possibly the highlight attraction along this scenic drive but regardless of whether you choose to book this excursion, the views from the road as you pass by the Athabasca Glacier are some of the most memorable.

Hotel Recommendation

Are you ready to leave Jasper National Park? After all of the amazing scenery you have just experienced, you could be forgiven for wanting to turn around and stay amidst the natural beauty! Don’t worry though, there is plenty more where that came from as you cross over from Jasper to Banff National Park.

The first landmark that offers a breathtaking scene is the Weeping Walls, a series of cliffs along the Icefields Parkway that frequently have cascading waterfalls flowing over the edge.

In the heart of summer, you can enjoy the sight and sound of these falls while in the winter months, avid ice climbers seek out these frozen falls to test their skills in the Canadian Rockies.

Lake Louise may be renowned as the iconic lake in the heart of Banff National Park but we would argue that there are many others that are equally fascinating. Let’s start with Peyto Lake.

bow summit

Named after Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area, this glacial lake is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway and offers stunning scenes that you cannot help but fall in love with.

peyto lake banff national park

You may be wondering how this glacial lake (along with many others throughout Banff and Jasper) has this gorgeous bright, turquoise color. During the summer months following the thawing of the lake (we visited during the “thawing” phase!), rock flour flows into the lake and these suspended particles are what creates the vibrant color.

It’s no surprise that Peyto Lake is one of the most photographed attractions, particularly the iconic view from Bow Summit, the highest point along the Icefields Parkway as you peer down and appreciate the natural beauty.

The beauty of exploring both Jasper and Banff National Parks in the heart of summer is that you have plenty of daylight. It’s fair to say we maximized our time in the Canadian Rockies and as we ventured back towards Banff at around 10:00 PM in the evening, we had the opportunity to capture the stunning sight of Hector Lake with the sun setting in the background.

hector lake banff national park

The reflection of mountains on a lake is a highly sought after shot and frequently you miss out on this experience because the water isn’t calm enough or the light isn’t at the right angle. However, we felt privileged to capture this shot with the sunset hitting the very peak of the mountain range in the background.

hector lake banff national park

Hector Lake is a relatively small glacial lake in comparison to many of its fellow counterparts throughout Banff but that should take nothing away from the inherent beauty it possesses. Surrounded by the Waputik Mountain Range to the west, Hector Lake was one of our final stops on the drive from Jasper to Banff and I hope you will agree it was a pretty awesome way to finish the experience.

As you approach Lake Louise, you have a decision to make. Do you want to spend time exploring this iconic lake along with the gorgeous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel or do you want to leave this for a day trip while staying in Banff? We have the perfect alternative should you opt to stay away from Lake Louise on this drive – the Bow Valley Parkway.

Running parallel to the main highway, the Bow Valley Parkway is a scenic route that offers wildlife encounters, spectacular overlooks and a number of gorgeous hiking trails such as Johnston Canyon.

Spanning 51km between Lake Louise and Banff, this route is one that is either a great way to start your journey between the two national parks or a great way to end. Either way, I am convinced that you will likely want a return trip to the Bow Valley Parkway to spend more time exploring…I know we did!

Summary

We have enjoyed some amazing road trips around the world such as experiencing an awesome Great Ocean Road day trip in Australia and also a scenic drive from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone National Park. However, I think it’s fair to say that we may have now stumbled across our new favorite. The drive from Jasper to Banff is beyond incredible, in fact, it left us breathless…and that’s not because of the altitude in the Canadian Rockies!

After following our proposed itinerary and stumbling across your own favorite landmarks (please share them below because we know we missed a bunch of awesome spots!), I am sure that you will be raring to head back along the Icefields Parkway because of the lasting impression it leaves.

We all of our favorite spots and given that I love waterfalls so much, I have to admit that Athabasca Falls is pretty incredible. However, regardless of your taste, be sure to give yourselves ample time to enjoy this awe-inspiring journey!

Tupelo Elvis Festival – How to Enjoy a Tribute to the King?

I remember when my grandpa would tell me stories about meeting Elvis in Germany. I remember growing up in a small town and listening to his music or watching his movies all the time. Having family that was hardcore Elvis fans only meant my destiny was determined and the fan base would continue. When I heard about the Tupelo Elvis Festival to celebrate the life and the legacy of the King, of course, I jumped at the chance to attend the weekend festivities.

Let’s go back to 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. A struggling family in a small town in the south had a son, Elvis Aaron Presley was born. A town remembers what it was like for Elvis growing up and growing up in fame. A boy, who never gave up and never forgot where he came from. This is exactly the type of person Elvis was and it’s only appropriate that the town offers an annual Tupelo Elvis Festival to pay tribute to this legend.

tupelo elvis festival

Let’s take a look at a brief history of Elvis and find out exactly what the festival is all about.

Who is Elvis Presley?

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi to Vernon and Gladys Presley on January 8, 1935, as a twin; however, after a 35-hour delivery, Jesse didn’t make it leaving Gladys with one son and no chance of carrying a child again.

Most people know all about the life of Elvis moving to Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 13 and going on to build his empire known to many as Graceland. As a military man, actor, and of course, the heartthrob that left so many screaming for, Elvis’ legacy is one that deserves to continue and what better way to achieve this than by visiting the annual Tupelo Elvis Festival!

tupelo elvis festival

Elvis is an iconic name not only in Mississippi, Tennessee, and even the United States but also across the globe! His unique demeanor, flamboyant stage presence and of course, his desire to meet all of his avid followers made Elvis a lovable character by millions. But as we mentioned, Elvis’ stardom never made him forget his roots and his continued desire to return to Tupelo was something locals never would forget!

Elvis and Tupelo

How many of you know about those special moments that Elvis had in Tupelo? I will be the first to admit that I knew he was born there but beyond that, I knew very little. Visiting Tupelo to enjoy a weekend at the annual Tupelo Elvis Festival gave me the opportunity to learn so much more about who he was and what a special place Tupelo was to him.

Elvis Presley Birthplace Home

We started our journey at Elvis’ birthplace which has a museum as well as the church Elvis grew up attending and where his gospel singing started. When Elvis started becoming a household name across the world, he returned to Tupelo and saw his home that he was born in for sale.

He granted money to the city of Tupelo and with a request that they purchase the home and make it a park because while he was growing up, that was something he didn’t have and wanted to make a difference for others.

tupelo elvis festival

The house is actually on the same land that it was when Elvis lived there but they relocated the church onto the grounds from a few streets down. The church was actually remodeled from a two bedroom home once the city purchased it and they restored it back to the church that Elvis would have known.

Elvis Presley Boyhood Church

There is also a chapel that was built in memory after Elvis passed away. This was funded by fans who wanted to do something in the name of Elvis. Today, it can be used for special events or just a location for you to pay your respects to the family.

Chapel

This is a testament to how much Tupelo loves Elvis and his family. Even though he was only there for a short time, Tupelo held a special spot in Elvis’ heart, which is why some believe he might have left Tupelo with unfinished business. He returned to make sure all debts were paid and of course, his generous offerings to ensure the location he grew up in continued to thrive in the heart of Mississippi.

Elvis’ Favorite – Johnnie’s Drive-In

Our next stop was Johnnie’s Drive-In, a local spot that Elvis visited frequently and one that we could enjoy delicious milkshakes at! However, before we arrived we met up with some friends that we would quickly get to know throughout the weekend.

Elvis Festival

When we arrived at Johnnie’s Drive-In, I wasn’t expecting somewhere so small; however, it turned out to be a great way to get to know the locals as well as learning more about the Elvis tribute artists. With 15+ people going to have a milkshake, it was definitely a little crowded but we all found a free seat and made a friend at the table we were at.

Johnnies Milkshakes

Tupelo Hardware Co.

After we enjoyed some milkshakes, we headed over to the Tupelo Hardware Co. where the same family still owns and runs the store since 1925. This was not just your typical hardware store, it was also where Gladys took Elvis to pick out a gift for his birthday. Elvis had his heart set on a rifle but Gladys, as any protective mother would do, decided not to let him have a rifle.

A salesman saw Elvis visibly upset and brought out a guitar to see if it was something that he was interested in. It turns out that Elvis loved it and that was what he left with that day and never looked back.

It was a true honor to be able to attend a reenactment of this amazing story and we even got to hear a couple songs with “little Elvis” and with the tribute artists.

Tupelo Hardware Co.

Where to Stay

Before experiencing the full festivities of the weekend, we checked into our hotel which was situated in the perfect location to not only enjoy the festival but also the heart and soul of downtown Tupelo.

The Hilton Garden Inn Tupelo is definitely a hotel that we can recommend staying in if you are planning on attending next year’s Tupelo Elvis Festival (or just passing through and want to experience a night in the town where it all started for the King).

One of the main benefits of staying here during the Elvis Festival is that this is where all the Elvis tribute artists are staying and you can enjoy late night parties in the hotel lobby/restaurant area.

Check out the latest rates and availability here.

If you prefer to stay elsewhere, check out some other alternatives below.

Tupelo Elvis Festival

We were able to have a meet and greet with the artists and other locals that actually knew Elvis. It was a blast meeting everyone and spending time with a group of individuals that was so passionate about continuing Elvis’ legacy.

Elvis Tupelo Festival

I interviewed a few of the artists and a few questions I asked was what inspired them down this path and all of them answered with having a personal connection with the passion and the drive of Elvis.

Whether it was “My dad always played Elvis and told me stories about the man he was…” or “My family always watch his movies and listened to his music while I was growing up..”. We ended the night with those thoughts and comments, which we can all relate to having that type of inspiration in our lives.

Elvis Pet Parade

The annual pet parade was something I was excited to see and had no idea how this was going to happen. Although a pet parade may not necessarily be something you associate with Elvis, it offered an opportunity for all the family to enjoy yet another tribute, this time in a fun and artistic way.

As the party was getting started, we noticed that all 14 contestants were dressed, as well as their pets and 4 judges were on hand to select the winners. I didn’t realize just how creative some of these Tupelo locals would be but I have to admit that some of these were adorable.

Pet Parade

And some were… creative…

Pet Parade

But our winner was.. a Hound dog!

Pet Parade

Congratulations to Bennie Bear and Family for winning the Tupelo Elvis Festival Pet Parade.

Tupelo Elvis Festival Pet Parade

Memphis Jones was the master of ceremonies for the pet parade and his unique sense of humor was definitely a crowd pleaser and provided the perfect accompaniment to the stars of the show…the pets!

Conversations with Tom Brown

Tupelo’s very own Tom Brown hosted a couple of interviews from people with connections to Elvis and a few of the winners from previous Tupelo Elvis Festivals. The person that I loved listening to was Marlyn Mason.

Being able to listen to the stories of her and Elvis and all the movies they collaborated together on.

Marlyn Mason- Tupelo Elvis Festival

The best part was the famous “hair story”. One of her producers told her to mess up Elvis’s hair because it was too perfect. Marlyn and the producer went back and forth because no one could handle telling Elvis Presley to mess up his hair.

She finally walked up to Elvis and said “You know you would look amazing if you just moved a few strands” and Elvis quickly messed it up completely and Marlyn gave a wink to the producers. That is one of many stories we heard from this talented woman.

Elvis Tribute Artist Contest

These guys go through all kinds of research and preparation for this event. Having to study the mannerisms of Elvis to get to this on stage takes so much dedication. Watching the finalists compete was a real treat, as with so many personalities it was refreshing to see these people show their respect in that way.

Cody Ray Slaughter

I wasn’t around during the Elvis era while he was alive but I am so glad that my family carried on the memories for me to learn from. I mean seriously, I know why the girls loved Elvis and guys wanted to be him. (those hips) Did I mention he is from Arkansas?

tupelo elvis festival

But the person who really stole the show in all areas was Cote Deonath. The judging was based on who came out and demonstrated talent, charisma and always staying true to Elvis. Maybe a little bit on those jumps.

tupelo elvis festival

It was such an honor to be able to celebrate with some new friends and the Tupelo Elvis Festival Winner! Congratulations Cote!! One thing we have in common is that we have to return, we are all part of the Tupelo Family.

Tupelo Elvis Festival

Summary

The Tupelo Elvis Festival is a weekend to celebrate the life and legacy of Elvis. I always thought that impersonating someone was something that was done just for fun. How wrong was I? These guys are not impersonating anyone…they are the ultimate Elvis Tribute Artists, and they make sure that we keep Elvis’ name alive and celebrate the wonderful soul he had.

What a great experience to have and what a wonderful way to spend the weekend. If you want to become part of the Tupelo Elvis family too, you need to purchase tickets and come join in on the fun! Tickets go on sale mid-January, see you guys there next year!

Why the Glacier Skywalk in Jasper Is the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush?

6

Skydiving, bungee jumping and swimming with sharks… what’s the first thing that springs to mind when you hear these? Crazy, awesome or perhaps, terrifying! These are just a few examples of “bucket list” experiences that many adrenaline junkies around the world love to enjoy! Do you enjoy living life on the edge or do you prefer something a little more relaxing when it comes to “adventure”? We believe that we have found the perfect compromise in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The Glacier Skywalk in Jasper offers an adrenaline rush but without the inherent danger (some may argue otherwise!) that many of us contemplate with those aforementioned activities.

glacier skywalk jasper

If you are ready to step outside your comfort zone and enjoy a memorable experience, the Glacier Skywalk in Jasper is certainly an attraction for you! During our recent visit to the Canadian Rockies, we had every intention of finding the best things to do in Jasper National Park. Where to Stay

How to Reach the Glacier Skywalk?

A question that we frequently get asked is where are the best places to stay close to the attractions we visit. I have to admit, the Glacier Skywalk Jasper experience is located in the heart of the Columbia Icefield so you should probably prepare yourself to travel a distance in order to enjoy this. However, don’t worry because there are a couple of options available to you.

glacier skywalk jasper

  • Self-Organized – If you are renting a car to explore Jasper (and Banff) National Park, you can take the short one hour drive from the town of Jasper. Alternatively, if you are staying in Banff, it will take around 2 1/2 hours to reach the Discovery Center where all of the excursions start.
  • Organized Tours – No car? Thanks to Brewster Sightseeing Tours, you don’t need to worry about finding your own way to enjoy the Glacier Skywalk. Tours are available from Calgary, Banff, and Jasper while hotel pickup is available at most accommodation options in downtown Calgary and Banff.

Hotel Recommendations in Jasper

Although we stayed in Hinton, just outside of Jasper National Park, this left us a two-hour drive to the Columbia Icefield. However, if we had booked in advance, we would have certainly considered one of the following options based on feedback from some of our fellow travel bloggers that have stayed in downtown Jasper.

  • Pyramid Lake Resort – If you are looking for a hotel in a perfect location with gorgeous surroundings, the Pyramid Lake Resort is situated just minutes from downtown Jasper but in the tranquil setting of this gorgeous lake. Check out the latest prices and availability here.
  • Best Western Jasper Inn & Suites – Prefer to stay in a “brand” name hotel? Consider the Best Western Jasper Inn & Suites as a viable alternative given the ideal location and available amenities. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

If you are looking for a stereotypical experience in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, check out the Royal Canadian Lodge. Check out the latest prices and availability here.
  • Moose Hotel And Suites – The name pretty much says it all…when you are in Canada, you just have to consider staying somewhere called Moose Hotel and Suites! Don’t worry, I don’t think you will have any moose popping into your rooms while you are out exploring the spectacular scenery around you. Check out the latest prices and availability here.
  • Fairmont Banff Springs – We couldn’t recommend a list of Banff hotels without offering the “ultimate” luxury location! The Fairmont brand is proud to be a luxurious accommodation option and if you want to really impress someone, consider booking a stay at the gorgeous Fairmont Banff Springs. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

Glacier Skywalk Experience

When you read the caption on the Brewster Travel Canada website about the Glacier Skywalk Experience, you know you are in for a real treat!

STAND WHERE EAGLES SOAR

After taking a short shuttle bus ride from the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre, the first part of the Glacier Skywalk is an interpretative experience where you can learn about the history, geology, botany, and zoology of this region.

glacier skywalk jasper

There are several viewpoints where you can start to appreciate the scenery across the Sunwapta Valley but all of this is just preparation for the real experience when you reach the glass Skywalk.

glacier skywalk jasper

As you learn about the waterfalls, wildlife, fossils and much more that can be found through the Sunwapta Valley, you can’t help but look at the gorgeous (or terrifying) sight of the cliff-edge platform that protrudes out across the landscape.

glacier skywalk jasper

Approaching the Glacier Skywalk, you quickly realize that this is not for the faint-hearted and for those of you that suffer from acrophobia, this is either going to be an opportunity for you to overcome the fear of heights or you will make a choice to turn around and head back to the shuttle (please don’t do this).

glacier skywalk jasper

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH…the key word to think about before stepping out on the glass platform is TRUST!! You have to trust the engineering masterpiece and also trust yourself. Once you take that first step on the glass, the rest is easy. Be sure to enjoy your time on the platform and appreciate the awe-inspiring scenery in front of you.

glacier skywalk jasper

Take a moment to peer over the edge of the platform and try to spot wildlife, you will likely see some mountain sheep and possibly a bear or two wandering around the valley. Don’t forget to look down either through the glass, you may be pleasantly surprised at just how cool the view is.

glacier skywalk jasper

Of course, don’t panic and start over thinking what you are actually doing because the reality is, this glass platform can hold a lot more weight than you could ever imagine!

glacier skywalk jasper

Summary

After reading this post, you could be forgiven for thinking that we are adventure seekers and love these types of experiences where you live on the edge! I would actually say we are the exact opposite of this and prefer more relaxing adventures but visiting the Glacier Skywalk Jasper attraction is certainly something that we enjoyed and would strongly recommend to folks with a variety of interests.

glacier skywalk jasper

The views are incredible, the sense of accomplishment is worth the admission fee alone and the overall experience is something that will long live in your memories. As we stood on the edge of the glass platform that extends out 35 meters (114 feet) from the cliff, we couldn’t help but marvel at the impact nature has had on this region.

glacier skywalk jasper

I realize that may sound a little controversial given that we were standing on a CAD$ 21 million man-made structure but it’s the gorgeous, untouched wilderness surrounding you that is the real reason you are appreciating this experience.

Experience the Ice Explorer

Get ready for the experience of a lifetime…or at least an adventure that you will likely have never experienced before! Following a quick coach ride over from the Discovery Center, our tour guide and driver introduced herself and instructed us to board the “beast” also known as an Ice Explorer. Think about a combination of a monster truck and a minibus and you have this impressive looking vehicle.

brewster travel canada

Our tour guide later told us that Brewster Travel Canada is the only company to own these vehicles. The fleet on display at the Athabasca Glacier along with one other being used for work on Antarctica are the only ones around. At a cost of several million dollars each, it’s no surprise that these are pretty rare!

brewster travel canada ice explorers

The most impressive features of the Ice Explorers are the tires. These are some pretty enormous wheels and in conjunction with the hydraulic brakes, create the perfect vehicle for transporting visitors onto the Athabasca Glacier.

athabasca glacier

The first part of the journey is relatively calm but as we ventured on the edge of the glacier along the rocky lateral moraines that have built up over the centuries, the adventure started.

athabasca glacier

Hold on to your seats and all of your belongings because the journey is about to get serious! As we headed down an incredibly steep gradient, we immediately noticed the power and traction of the Ice Explorer as it easily handled the 32 percent slope.

brewster travel canada

A quick bath for the tires to remove all of the rocks saw us head out on to the vast icy landscape, also known as the Athabasca Glacier.

ice explorer glacier adventure

The return trip in the Ice Explorer was an equally eye-opening experience as we embarked on the same journey but up the 32 percent gradient.

Again, the vehicle had no issues and our driver was certainly experienced in handling this type of terrain which was a relief to all 56 visitors on board.

Walk on the Athabasca Glacier

The moment we had all been waiting for arrived after a 20-minute journey on the Ice Explorer. It’s fair to say that although you are not traveling a particularly long distance, these vehicles are designed solely for maneuvering through the rough terrain and NOT for moving at high speeds.

brewster travel canada athabasca glacier

Admittedly, when I stepped off the Ice Explorer my first thought was “I need to stay upright and not make a fool of myself in front of everyone else on the ice.” It was surprisingly easy to stand up and walk around on the compacted ice and of course, the designated area was created to ensure everyone remained safe.

brewster travel canada

Another thought, what happens if we fall through the glacier? Seriously, it crossed our minds! Don’t worry, this is some pretty thick ice that we are talking about here on the Athabasca Glacier! It is measured to be approximately 90–300 meters (300–980 ft) thick.

brewster travel canada

The scenery is incredible and that’s an understatement. I don’t think the pictures will ever do this landscape enough justice and it’s one of those places you have to experience for yourself. We were incredibly fortunate to have perfect weather to enjoy the Athabasca Glacier.

brewster travel canada athabasca glacier

While admiring the beauty of the glacier, it’s hard to stop yourself from catching a glimpse of the towering peaks that surround this glacial valley. Imagine a time-lapse of the glacier moving through the valley and you are left with the incredible sight today.

brewster travel canada glacier adventure

Perhaps because I studied Geography as part of my undergraduate degree is why I was so passionately enamored by the beauty around the Columbia Icefield but even if you have no real interest in the topic of glaciation, this is a breathtaking sight to behold.

athabasca glacier water

We had about 20-30 minutes to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding us and after taking hundreds of pictures including the inevitable selfies, we decided to sample the pure glacial water which is supposed to help you stay young!

Summary

One of our highlight experiences during our visit to Jasper National Park was enjoying the Glacier Adventure on the Athabasca Glacier courtesy of Brewster Travel Canada. After enjoying an epic “adventure on ice” we could be forgiven for thinking that the Glacier Skywalk couldn’t match this experience….we will be sharing our thoughts on that attraction soon but just to let you into a little secret, it’s pretty amazing too!

brewster travel canada glacier adventure

The Athabasca Glacier is the epitome of natural beauty, particularly if you have a fond love of glacial deposits and the environment that allowed these natural phenomena to thrive. The path of a glacier is of course determined by the geologic surroundings but your path out onto the Athabasca Glacier is solely your choice!

Don’t let the opportunity slip away from you because it’s an incredible sight that may not be around forever…especially given that it recedes approximately 10 meters every year. If you have to pick one adventure to enjoy while in the Canadian Rockies, be sure to check out Brewster Travel Canada and their amazing excursion on the Columbia Icefield.

How to Enjoy the Drive from Auckland to Bay of Islands?

If you are considering taking a day trip from Auckland to Bay of Islands in the northern section of New Zealand’s North Island, you should! Having spent a day exploring the Auckland CBD, we hopped in our rental car and ventured north in search of the amazing untouched coastline that typifies the spectacular Bay of Islands region. The North Island may not have the stereotypical amazing scenery in comparison to the South Island but just a short distance from Auckland, you are rewarded with a breathtaking coastline that continues as you drive further north.

Rather than pinpointing all the various routes you can take when you leave Auckland, we want to share our itinerary that we chose to follow on New Year’s Day. We had several spontaneous routes that we chose to take but after arriving back in Auckland 12 hours after we left, we can well and truly reflect on an amazing day trip that I’m convinced everyone else will appreciate should they choose to follow this.

Where are the Bay of Islands?

New Zealand is blessed to have two distinctive islands that represent this beautiful nation. However, if you haven’t visited the North Island you may not be aware of a plethora of other smaller islands that are scattered along the north-eastern coastline past Auckland.

The beautiful Bay of Islands is a stunning region made up of 144 islands

It’s no surprise to hear that this region is referred to as the Bay of Islands! When I first heard about the Bay of Islands, I read that this region was “a world away from city life,” despite only being a short distance from Auckland. I had to see this for myself and after taking this day trip, I can well and truly attest that this statement is 100% true.

bay of islands

Let’s take a look at the route we opted for and some of the highlight attractions along the way.

Drive From Auckland to Bay of Islands

If your goal is to reach the northernmost point of the North Island at Cape Reinga without exploring much of the natural beauty along the way, the following route is probably not going to be the ideal option to take.

It’s time-consuming and ultimately best suited to experiencing as a day trip from Auckland or as a multi-day trip where you spend the night at one of the many towns and villages along our proposed itinerary.

auckland to bay of islands

Here are the main stops along the route we opted for:

  • Orewa
  • Matakana
  • Leigh
  • Whangarei and Whangarei Falls
  • Rawhiti (Bay of Islands)

Orewa

A short drive along New Zealand State Highway 1 from Auckland we had the option to take the toll road or head towards the coast to avoid this and pass through the town of Orewa. As you can imagine, there wasn’t really a choice as any opportunity to admire the amazing scenery overlooking the ocean we took it!

orewa beach

Known as the the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast,” Orewa Beach was our first glimpse of New Zealand’s spectacular coastline.

drive from auckland to bay of islands

After passing through the town, we pulled over by the beach and took a short stroll along the pristine sand while enjoying the relaxing sound of the waves.

orewa beach

This Pacific Ocean beach is a stretch of coastline where avid surfers (head a little further north away from the town) can enjoy, while visitors and locals alike that prefer less strenuous activities can still admire the spectacular scenery here.

bay of islands

Matakana

After leaving Orewa (that was actually pretty difficult because we were really enjoying spending time on the gorgeous beach), we continued our journey north and opted to stay on the quieter roads along the coastline rather than heading inland for the highway.

auckland to bay of islands

We are glad we did this because the scenery continued to amaze us and we eventually stumbled across a small town by the name of Matakana.

matakana new zealand

Matakana is a small town along the eastern coast of the North Island and this was a perfect opportunity to have a quick pit-stop and grab something to eat and drink before continuing our journey. I was amazed at how busy this little town was and how the majority of the local stores were open despite being New Year’s Day morning.

matakana new zealand

A local coffee shop on the corner was the perfect spot to grab an espresso or if you prefered a colder option, the store across the street had everything you could wish for along with a cafe if you wish to grab a bite to eat.

matakana new zealand

In the local square, a farmer’s market was in the process of being set up with local produce, crafts and other artisan inspired gifts available for purchase. We later found out that every Saturday Matakana hosts this farmer’s market and is the ultimate showcase of locals in the Matakana region who have a passion for what they do.

matakana farmers market

I don’t usually talk about public bathrooms in my post but those in Matakana were so quirky that they deserve a mention. The design of these perfectly sculptured bathrooms is such that you just have to experience them!

matakana bathrooms

Opened to the public in 2009, these bathrooms were designed by a local after the town offered a competition for the building’s design. I am not sure of the exact significance of the half-faces but it’s certainly a highlight in the town and the location on the side of the road means you cannot avoid seeing this as you pass through.

matakana new zealand

Leigh

The small coastal town of Leigh was our next stop. As we drove through the heart of town, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed because there wasn’t much to see.

auckland to bay of islands

However, as we drove a little further outside of the town we stumbled across another gorgeous stretch of coastline where we had to stop and experience.

auckland to bay of islands

After driving down a gravel road for about two miles, we arrived at a campground where we parked and took a short walk along a boardwalk to admire the amazing landscape.

auckland to bay of islands

A combination of sand dunes, the open ocean and islands scattered in the background provided the perfect backdrop for a relaxing stroll.

leigh beach

We even had the opportunity to have a quick dip (at least with our feet) in the ocean but we were ready to continue exploring rather than just enjoy the rest of the afternoon here. The drive from Leigh to Whangarei was full of amazing scenery and I had a real sense of déjà vu as the surroundings were very similar to the English countryside I am familiar with.

auckland to bay of islands

Whangarei Falls

The drive from Leigh to Whangarei saw us pass through several smaller towns including Waipu which was hosting a New Year’s Day edition of the infamous Highland Games.

new zealand road trip

Everywhere you looked, Scottish flags were flying high and people dressed in kilts and other traditional attire were flocking to Caledonian Park to experience the caber toss and other symbolic events that you associate with these festivities.

waipu highland games

We decided against spending time here and continued our drive to Whangarei where we enjoyed a late lunch before visiting Whangarei Falls. We LOVE waterfalls and this was renowned as being pretty spectacular. We were certainly not disappointed!

whangarei falls

A number of viewing platforms are available as you watch the water cascading over the drop measuring 86 feet.

whangarei falls

Categorized as a “classic curtain waterfall”, Whangarei Falls is part of the Hatea River and not only offers spectacular viewing points but also the opportunity for visitors to hike to the bottom and enjoy the pool of water that is particularly popular in the heart of summer.

whangarei falls

We were fortunate to experience these falls when the water was flowing pretty strongly but there are times of the year where the water levels are lower, so be prepared for Whangarei Falls to look a little different to these images.

whangarei falls

If you are interested in exploring other waterfalls while you are taking this drive from Auckland to Bay of Islands, be sure to consider visiting the following which offer equally stunning sights if you enjoy this type of natural attraction:

All of these are within short driving distance (less than 30 minutes) of Whangarei and offer an opportunity for waterfall lovers to have a nice collection to compare and contrast.

auckland to bay of islands

Our initial thought was to drive to Whangarei and then start heading back south but after looking at the map and realizing that we were only a short distance from the main area classified as the Bay of Islands, we decided to keep driving in hope of seeing something spectacular.

whangarei falls

Bay of Islands

The drive from Whangarei to Bay of Islands is actually longer than it appears on the map, primarily because the majority of this is on winding roads that will certainly encourage car sickness if you are inclined to suffer from that.

bay of islands

However, despite the distance, the drive is actually pretty spectacular and definitely worth the effort. It’s a real test of your concentration as you are frequently reducing speed to take tight curves and chicanes, something that may be better suited to a Formula 1 race track rather than country roads in New Zealand.

auckland to bay of islands

The final section of this drive is also a gravel road which I am thankful we didn’t have our own vehicle given the amount of rocks that were frequently flying up and hitting the side of our rental car. Regardless of the driving conditions, the views along this stretch of coastline are well worth the effort.

bay of islands

The aerial images of the Bay of Islands that you may have seen previously are certainly similar to what you can experience along this drive.

bay of islands

The turqouise colored waters of the Pacific Ocean along the eastern coastline are breathtaking as are the vast number of islands that you can admire throughout the bay of the Te Rawhiti Inlet.

bay of islands new zealand

Unfortunately, if you make the effort of driving all the way to Rawhiti there is really only one way back and it’s the same route that you took. Be prepared to enjoy (or despise) the same experiences though at least this time you know what to expect as you take those sharp corners.

drive from auckland to bay of islands

Summary

The drive from Auckland to Bay of Islands proved to be an incredible day trip. We tagged on a little extra at the end by driving all the way to Rawhiti but I’m sure you will agree it was worth the effort.

It’s certainly plausible that you would want to drive all the way to Cape Reinga so that you can stand at the northernmost point of New Zealand (hopefully we will have the opportunity to do this on a future trip) but realistically you would want to make this a multiple day trip.

auckland to bay of islands

Day trips are always a great idea especially if you want to have the comfort of knowing that you have a base to explore from. Auckland is perfectly located to accomplish this with a number of awesome destinations such as Hamilton, Rotorua and the Coromandel Peninsula all within driving distance for a day trip.

However, we encourage you to add the Bay of Islands to the list of possible excursions because the variety of attractions along this route ensure this will be a memorable trip as you reflect on your time in New Zealand.

How to Enjoy a Breathtaking 48 Hours in Jasper National Park?

5

The Canadian Rockies is a spectacular region of the Maple Leaf nation and anyone visiting here should savor every moment of spectacular scenery that you will stumble across. However, what if you only have a short time in this part of Canada? During our recent visit to Jasper and Banff, we had a couple of days in each national park so we wanted to share the best way to experience them. Let’s start by taking a look at our 48 hours in Jasper National Park and perhaps you will be inspired to follow a similar itinerary.

jasper national park

Our visit to Jasper National Park was action-packed and involved A LOT of driving. As you read through this post, there will be a couple of parts which you will likely question simply because we went back on ourselves but this was because of timing and some of the attractions that we had pre-booked.

48 hours in jasper national park

Regardless of your desire to experience all of the amazing things to do in Jasper National Park, if you are looking to enjoy ultimate serenity, Jasper is definitely one of the best places to experience this!

Where is Jasper National Park?

If you are unfamiliar with Canadian geography, you could be forgiven for having no idea where Jasper National Park is located. It’s actually one of the easier national parks to visit, particularly given the vast size of Canada and how much remoteness can be found across this nation. Conveniently located in close proximity to both Edmonton and Calgary, this can easily be reached within a few hours.

48 hours in jasper national park

For those of you opting to fly into Calgary like we did, you have a couple of choices to make. Do you want to take the breathtaking scenic route through Banff which is technically shorter and quicker but you will likely want to stop because of the many distractions along this route? Or alternatively, head north towards Edmonton before heading west across to Jasper?

48 hours in jasper national park

Regardless of the route you choose, the beauty of Jasper National Park awaits and you will be raring to experience the myriad of natural landscapes when you arrive!

Where to Stay in Jasper?

Be prepared to book well in advance before your visit to Jasper National Park! There is limited availability in the town of Jasper, so unless you are planning on renting an RV or camper, or pitching a tent somewhere, you will likely have to follow our approach and drive 45 minutes to nearby Hinton. This was certainly not our preferred option but given that we didn’t book anything in advance, we didn’t have much choice.

48 hours in jasper national park

It did give us the opportunity to admire the gorgeous scenery on the scenic route from the North-East entrance of Jasper National Park to the town of Jasper but as I indicated, this is not necessarily our recommended option.

48 hours in jasper national park

Here are a few accommodation options in Jasper based on recommendations from some of our travel blogging friends that have stayed here, in addition to our preferred choice in Hinton.

Jasper

  • Pyramid Lake Resort – Looking for the perfect location with a gorgeous backdrop? We strongly recommend considering the Pyramid Lake Resort which is located away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Jasper but only a few minutes away if you want to visit shops or restaurants. Check out the latest prices and availability here.
  • Best Western Jasper Inn & Suites – Frequently the Best Western brand is considering a “low-cost” option, especially in the United States. Although affordability is a positive aspect, we have found that the Best Western brand tends to have more lucrative options outside of the States and the location in Jasper is one that fits into this category. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

Hinton

  • Holiday Inn Hinton – Welcome to our choice of hotel during our 48 hours in Jasper National Park! Conveniently located on the highway close to the national park entrance, this is an affordable hotel which will meet all your needs, particularly if you are just looking for a place to put your head down for a few hours and enjoy a shower. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

48 Hours in Jasper National Park

48 hours…4,200 square miles to cover…surely that wouldn’t be a problem for expert weekend warriors like us? In hindsight, we made a few mistakes with our planning, specifically not being able to stay overnight in Jasper (having to drive 45 minutes to Hinton was more of an annoyance than anything!) and also enjoying the Athabasca Glacier the following morning before heading back north to take the Maligne Lake scenic drive.

jasper national park

But regardless, we accomplished what we set out to see and hopefully, this will inspire you to check out all of these amazing attractions on your next visit to Jasper…trust us, it’s worth it!

48 hours in jasper national park

Day 1 Itinerary

8:00 AM – After picking up our rental car around at Calgary International Airport, we headed to Jasper National Park via Banff and along the Columbia Icefield. Although it was difficult, we only stopped on a couple of occasions to snap a few quick photos with the realization that we would be making this same trip a couple of days later.

jasper national park

2:00 PM – Arrived in Jasper to pay a quick visit to the tourist information center and collect some brochures on the national park and quickly outline our planned route.

48 hours in jasper national park

2:30 PM – Our first stop was the Jasper SkyTram to the summit of Whistlers Mountain. We had the opportunity to admire the beauty of Jasper National Park while also peering down on the town of Jasper.

jasper skytram

4:30 PM – Short drive back to Jasper town center and then just a couple of miles north of the downtown area is the gorgeous sight of Patricia Lake and Pyramid Lake. We spent quite a bit of time walking around exploring this area and capturing some pretty memorable shots.

48 hours in jasper national park

7:00 PM – We headed back to Jasper to enjoy dinner at the Whistle Stop Pub before spending some time walking around and exploring the myriad of gift shops and other attractions in the downtown vicinity.

10:00 PM – Our evening entertainment was provided as the Jasper Planetarium where we were given an astronomy lesson and then enjoyed a late night viewing of stars, galaxies, and constellations. Given that we didn’t book our hotel well in advance, there was limited availability in Jasper so we opted to stay about 45 minutes outside in Hinton, which at that time of night wasn’t really the drive we wanted to take.

Day 2 Itinerary

7:00 AM – A two-hour drive saw us head back into Jasper National Park from Hinton and to the gorgeous Columbia Icefield. We stumbled across our first black bear sighting on this drive, but it certainly wasn’t the last! We had a tour booked to experience a walk on the Athabasca Glacier and also experience the Glacier Skywalk.

athabasca glacier

1:00 PM – Although it made very little sense to head back to Jasper, we really wanted to experience the scenic drive to Maligne Lake given that we heard this was a hotspot for wildlife.

maligne lake

We grabbed a quick lunch in Jasper at a convenience store that we quickly fell in love with both days in this town (the sausage rolls are to die for!), before heading along the scenic drive and first visiting Maligne Canyon.

48 hours in jasper national park

5:00 PM – Our time in Jasper National Park was coming to an end but we still had plenty to experience en route to Banff. We certainly took advantage of the long daylight hours during this trip to the Canadian Rockies. Visits to Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls were spectacular before the five-hour drive back to Banff saw us arrive around 11:00 PM.

athabasca falls

Summary

As you can see, this was an incredibly busy itinerary but with a little extra planning, we could have avoided a couple of the longer stretches of driving. Jasper National Park can be seen in 48 hours, at least some of the iconic things to do, but we strongly encourage that you consider spending longer here to fully appreciate the beauty.

48 hours in jasper national park

We wanted to give an overview of our experience visiting Jasper and we will be releasing a series of posts focused on highlighting the best things to do in Jasper National Park! If you haven’t already fallen in love with this part of Canada, we are convinced that you soon will.

48 hours in jasper national park

Did I also mention that we experienced the spectacular scenery throughout Banff National Park also during this visit? Yes, we were well and truly spoiled on this holiday weekend getaway!

Evan Williams Tour – How to Enjoy a Distillery on the Ohio River?

2

It’s hard to imagine that a budding entrepreneur from Wales would make the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to start a thriving bourbon distillery on the banks of the Ohio River. However, this is exactly what Evan Williams accomplished in the late 18th-century when he headed across the pond to start what has since become the second largest bourbon brand in the world. Ready to learn more about the history, heritage, and of course, the unique taste of this bourbon? Head to the heart of Louisville or continue reading to learn all about the amazing Evan Williams tour of the downtown distillery.

evan williams bourbon experience

Whether you are an avid bourbon connoisseur or simply want to enjoy a distillery tour, we can highly recommend the experience on the Evan Williams tour. During our recent weekend in Louisville, we had the opportunity to sample a variety of distilleries around the city. It’s fair to say that Evan Williams offered the most detailed and informative experience, so let’s take a look at why this should be on your radar when you next visit Kentucky.

Evan Williams Tour Information

Located along downtown Louisville’s historic “Whiskey Row,” the Evan Williams Distillery is recognized as one of the best places to start your Kentucky Bourbon Trail given the history that dates back to 1783. Some will argue that you are better starting out at the gorgeous Jim Beam American Stillhouse in nearby Clermont, but regardless of your decision, taking an Evan Williams tour is certainly something you should consider.

History of Evan Williams

As we started our Evan Williams tour, we quickly realized that we were in for a real treat. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to field any questions we had about the experience.

evan williams

The tour started with a quick video depicting the history of Evan Williams dating back to 1783 when he first moved to the States with a desire to set up the first distillery on the banks of the Ohio River.

evan williams tour

In 1797, he was elected Louisville’s first wharf master despite certain individuals thinking that this was a bad move given that Williams was always focused on distilling whiskey.

evan williams tour

Louisville was a major port for river traffic moving along the Ohio River given that this was a spot (known as the Falls of the Ohio River) where boats would have to be unloaded and moved across the land before heading back into the Ohio and onwards to New Orleans.

evan williams tour

The second part of the tour was a really cool experience as we were taken into a room with a video playing all around us that made us feel like we were taken back to the 18th-century. We saw a depiction of Williams performing his wharf-master duties before focusing his attention on mastering the distilling process.

Evan Williams is the fastest-growing high-volume bourbon (Larry Kass)

Distilling Process at Evan Williams

Despite the history of Evan Williams dating back over 200 years, one thing has stayed pretty consistent throughout the centuries – the distilling process! Today, Parker and Craig Beam are the master distillers for this brand and oversee the continued development of Evan Williams bourbon whiskey.

evan williams tour

The ‘standard’ distilling process is much the same for all bourbon whiskeys but there are always some hidden secrets within each brand that helps make them unique and create such a diverse portfolio of bourbon flavors.

evan williams tour

We had the opportunity to watch a small distillery in action though because this is located in downtown Louisville, we weren’t able to appreciate the smell of authentic bourbon throughout the process given the regulations that are in place preventing this.

evan williams distilling process

Here are the seven phases of distilling bourbon whiskey:

  1. Grain Handling and Milling
  2. Mashing
  3. Backseat (Sourmash)
  4. Fermenting
  5. Distillation
  6. Gauging and Barreling
  7. Maturation

evan williams tour

Rather than going into detail about the various phases, I will let you experience that during your Evan Williams tour when you next visit Louisville. However, the fermentation phase is probably the most important because the master distiller’s 7th generation family yeast strain is added to the mash to help naturally convert the sugars into alcohol.

evan williams tour

After 4-20 years of natural aging, you can enjoy the wonderful taste of Evan Williams’ finest bourbon! Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait this long during our tour as we headed through a scene of historic downtown Louisville and visited The Phil Hollenbach Co. bar to enjoy a sampling of three unique flavors.

evan williams bourbon experience

Tasting Experience

As we headed inside the bar which has been transformed into a tasting room, our guide gave us a brief overview of the various samples we would experience.

evan williams tour

What we didn’t realize is that the “speakeasy” tables converted into a collection of bourbon samples waiting for us to enjoy.

evan williams tour

Three different Evan Williams bourbon flavors combined with a bourbon flavored truffle to accompany our final tasting was the perfect way to end our experience at this distillery.

evan williams tour

After spending the whole weekend sampling different bourbons from the various distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, I think Heather and I both will agree that the bourbon offered by Evan Williams was by far our favorite in terms of overall taste.

evan williams tour

The Evan Williams Single Barrel rye whiskey is perhaps my favorite of all the three flavors but depending on personal preference, I am convinced that one of these distinctive samples will intrigue you to try more.

evan williams tour

Summary

Before heading to Louisville, I read an article titled “Disney World for Adults: Touring the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience” and just as the title goes, this is definitely a spot worth experiencing for those that love sampling the best bourbon whiskeys around the world.

evan williams tour

Evan Williams bourbon has quickly jumped to the very top in terms of our favorite bourbons and taking the tour around the museum is definitely a worthwhile experience for everyone interested in learning more about the history of this brand.

Have you enjoyed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and in particular, the Evan Williams tour? What is your favorite bourbon whiskey?
