How to Enjoy the Best of Taiwanese Culture in New York City?

New York City has long been renowned as being the epitome of the “Melting Pot” as it embraces the multicultural diversity throughout the city. The Chinese influence in Chinatown, the Italian presence in Little Italy and even the Irish communities scattered around the boroughs are all integral to the multicultural society New York City has become. But what about the Taiwanese culture in New York City? It may not be the first immigrant group you think about when considering the melting pot concept but we would argue that the influence this has had on the city is just as important as those larger communities.

Whether you are enjoying a visit to the myriad of international restaurants throughout Manhattan or living in one of the other New York boroughs, no one can argue that the Big Apple isn’t a diverse collection of cultures. We want to take a look at how you can embrace the Taiwanese culture the next time you take a trip to New York City, not only through the variety of delicious restaurants but also through the rich heritage that can be seen throughout the city.

By the time you have finished reading this post, we are convinced that you will not only be ready to explore New York’s Taiwanese districts but also to head to Taiwan and experience everything this beautiful nation has to offer.

Taiwanese History in New York City

Let’s take a look at how Taiwanese history has developed throughout New York City over recent decades. Prior to the 1950s, the amount of Taiwanese immigration into the United States was relatively small, however, between 1960-1980 the number drastically increased before economic and political conditions in Taiwan improved and the numbers started to decrease.

taiwanese culture in new york city

An interesting concept that many folks don’t understand is that many of the Taiwanese communities did not integrate with the existing Chinatowns, simply because they don’t speak the same language. Instead, they opted to find smaller communities or places known as “Little Taipei” or “Little Taiwan”. This was certainly the case in New York City.

Today, Chinatown in the heart of Manhattan is predominantly Cantonese based immigrants while the Taiwanese populations can be found in other spots such as Flushing, which is now the second largest Chinatown outside of Asia (and potentially could surpass Manhattan’s in the future!).

Best Taiwanese Restaurants

Visitors to New York City that are interested in experiencing Taiwanese culture will likely want to know where the best restaurants are located. Don’t worry, you are in for a real treat if you choose to take a weekend getaway to the Big Apple in search of experiencing the very best of Taiwan’s authentic dishes.

taiwanese culture in new york city

Here are a few that we would highly recommend checking out but please feel free to leave your recommendations below.

  • Baohaus – Located in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village, Baohaus opened in 2009 with a stereotypical menu consisting of “baos.” Chairman Bao for example, consists of Braised Berkshire pork belly served with ‘Haus Relish’, crushed peanuts, Taiwanese red sugar, and cilantro. Sound delicious or do you need something a little more appetizing? Why not try the Minced Pork Stew on Rice!
  • Taiwan Bear House – A relatively new addition to Taiwanese culture in New York City is a restaurant located near Columbus Square – Taiwan Bear House. Renowned as a “stylish, modern eatery,” visitors can enjoy a variety of authentic style dishes that will likely increase your desire to head on the next plane to Taiwan!
  • Taiwan Pork Chop House – What better way to experience authentic Taiwanese food than being able to watch the chef prepare this for you! Affordable prices make this a popular spot among visitors to New York City and definitely a spot you won’t want to miss if diverse cuisine is what you are looking for.

All of these restaurants are in Manhattan but don’t worry, there are plenty of other options in Queens and Brooklyn.

As I mentioned, the Flushing Chinatown is a thriving community and with restaurants such as Happy Stony Noodle, Taiwanese Specialties, and Main Street Taiwanese Gourmet, visitors exploring the more culturally diverse neighborhoods will not be short of options.

Taiwanese Culture in New York City

If sampling authentic minced pork on rice or stereotypical dumplings isn’t Taiwanese enough for you, New York can be proud of the Taiwanese heritage and culture that thrives throughout its five boroughs.

Whether it’s arts, culture, sport or music that inspires you, New York City boasts a plethora of events and activities that portray a stereotypical reflection on day to day living in Taiwan.

Museums

Even if you are not planning a visit to the Chinatown community in Queens, many of New York’s museums frequently have exhibitions with a Taiwanese background.

The Queens Museum, for example, has frequently held exhibits by Taiwanese artists that showcase the myriad of talent, while The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative at the iconic Guggenheim Museum has presented a variety of new commissions from Taiwan.

Arts and Music

For those of you that want to take a serious interest in Taiwanese arts and culture, the Taipei Cultural Center is focused on driving initiatives that will achieve the following:

promote international cultural exchanges and present the rich diversity of Taiwan’s culture and arts (Taipei Cultural Center)

Visitors to Manhattan in July may have seen the amazing “Taiwanese Waves” live concert held in Central Park, dedicated to showcasing the unique sounds of Taiwan to New York City.

Sports

If arts and culture don’t intrigue you and you prefer a little sports action, the New York Mets certainly inspired their fans to consider a trip to Taiwan on August 20th when they celebrated the 13th annual Taiwan Heritage Day at Citi Field.

Traditional Taiwanese performances offered attendees to the game an opportunity to catch a glimpse of what they could expect should they venture to Asia.

Mets fans that attended the Marlins game a couple of days earlier also received a free promotional Taiwanese t-shirt courtesy of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau and this is another great way to promote to a city that is already embracing the vibrant culture of Taiwan.

Ready to Visit Taiwan?

For those of you that have already experienced Taiwanese cuisine in New York City or perhaps some of the events that we mentioned, perhaps you will now be ready to have the true, authentic experience and visit Taiwan!

a hugely underrated gem of Asia, and any time you spend here will be richly rewarded. (David Code)

But what exactly can you expect when you arrive there? I think it’s fair to say that you will have an extremely friendly welcome and everything you experience will be amazing. Here are some of the iconic attractions that make Taiwan such an attractive travel destination in Asia.

  • Taipei 101 – If you love architecture, the Taipei 101 skyscraper towers above the skyline at 1,667 feet above the ground. Between 2004 and 2010, this was the world’s tallest building before the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed this. An iconic reflection of Taiwan, this is a must-see attraction.

taipei 101

  • Kenting National Park – From the urban environment in Taipei to the breathtaking rural landscapes in Kenting National Park, Taiwan offers a distinctive blend of attractions worth exploring. Renowned for white-sand beaches, caves and spectacular coral reefs, this is undoubtedly a hotspot for folks looking to relax in Taiwan.
  • Tainan – Although most visitors will want to experience Taipei, consider adding the ancient capital of Tainan to your itinerary. Visit Taiwan’s oldest city and explore the history and heritage of the ancient temples here along with other historic sites that offer inspiring reflections on Taiwanese culture.

3

Orlando is blessed to have a number of iconic theme parks that attract millions of visitors every year. Whether you are visiting Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens or SeaWorld, you will likely be considering the myriad of options of where to stay. For those of you planning a trip to Universal, we have found the perfect option. With various on-site hotels and other options nearby, not only is this a difficult decision but one that you will certainly want to get right. Hopefully, after reading this post, you will realize why we consider the Loews brand to be the best Universal Studios hotel choice!

loews sapphire falls resort orlando

Loews is a luxury hotel brand that has over 25 locations across the United States and Canada. Although we had previously never stayed at a Loews hotel, we heard a lot of great things about the customer service and overall experience at the hotel.

At Universal Studios, Loews is fortunate to have five properties (soon to be six in the near future!), all of which offer distinctive features that will intrigue you to stay. The newest of the five properties is the Loews Sapphire Fall Resort and we were delighted to have the opportunity to stay here for two nights on our recent trip to Orlando.

loews sapphire falls

Let’s find out why Sapphire Falls is such an amazing accommodation option and by the end of this post, if you are not ready to book a stay here, we will be extremely surprised!

Loews Sapphire Falls Resort Information

History of the Loews Brand

The Loews brand is focused on delivering the perfect experience for all guests ranging from the business traveler to a family enjoying a long weekend getaway. The Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Studios certainly achieves this philosophy, continuing the long tradition of Loews Hotels that dates back to 1946 when brothers Larry and Bob Tisch purchased their first property in New Jersey.

Today, this innovative company has the next generation at its helm and is a premier name among luxury hotel brands. (Loews)

If you are planning a trip to Orlando and you agree that Loews is the best Universal Studios hotel option, you will be faced with the incredibly difficult decision of which hotel you want to stay at from the following list.

  • Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort
  • Loews Portofino Bay at Universal Orlando Resort
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando Resort
  • Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Orlando Resort
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Orlando Resort

Depending on your budget, your interests and your style of travel will likely determine which option you choose. When we heard that Loews Sapphire Falls was the brands newest on-site hotel and that it “transports guests to a paradise in the heart of the tropics,” we quickly realized this was the perfect place for us.

Relax at the Pool

After checking into the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, we headed to our room in tower 2 and immediately caught a glimpse of the highlight attraction – the gorgeous swimming pool! I will share more details about our room later but it’s fair to say, we literally dropped our bags, changed clothes and headed down to experience this amazing pool.

best universal studios hotel

The resort-style swimming pool is open daily until 11:00 PM and is a great spot to relax late in the evening as you enjoy your favorite beverage at the poolside bar. The pool measures around 16,000 square feet, so you don’t have to worry about other guests being in your way as there is plenty of room to accommodate everyone.

Two white sand beaches offer a more realistic setting while the kids (or perhaps the adults!) can enjoy a thrilling water slide at one end of the pool.

One of the highlight attractions is the ability for guests to rent a private cabana on the side of the pool.

Dining Options

Hotel guests have a variety of dining options available to them, ranging from the relaxed environment at New Dutch Trading Co. to the vibrant, modern setting inside the Amatista Cookhouse. For those that prefer to grab a bite to eat while relaxing by the gorgeous pool, there are several outdoor options available.

Let’s take a look at each of the dining options that may sway your opinion that the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort is the perfect choice for you.

New Dutch Trading Co.

Start your day by grabbing your favorite espresso beverage at New Dutch Trading Co.

We visited this “grab and go” option both days before heading down to the pool to enjoy an early morning swim or relaxing in the gorgeous lobby area where this is ample seating for everyone to relax.

A wide variety of hot and iced coffee options are available while for those that prefer a little less caffeine, Tazo teas are available along with a range of cold beverages from the coolers.

Breakfast sandwiches, muffins, croissants, bagels and much more are all appetizing options but perhaps the real eye-catching area is the hand-scooped gelato with a number of flavors. You will certainly want to return here later in the day!

best universal studios hotel

For those of you that are planning on relaxing at the hotel all day, you may want to consider purchasing a refillable Coca-Cola Freestyle cup for $12 per day (cheaper options are available for longer stays).

Amatista Cookhouse

The highlight dining experience at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort is at Amatista Cookhouse. Get ready to enjoy a selection of Caribbean cuisine, freshly prepared in the open kitchen while enjoying the gorgeous surroundings of the resort.

Why not head outdoors to the patio area for a romantic meal as you enjoy the sight of the lagoon area with the water wheel, waterfalls and tropical landscape the perfect backdrop?

amatista cookhouse

Amatista Cookhouse is open for guests to enjoy a breakfast buffet (or a la carte menu), lunch and dinner so regardless of your desire to experience the variety of restaurants nearby at the Universal CityWalk, you can be assured that you have a great dining option on-site to meet all your needs.

Strong Water Tavern

If you are looking for the perfect option for a late afternoon beverage or perhaps a nightcap, head over to Strong Water Tavern on the main lobby area to enjoy your favorite vintage rum or other drink.

strong water tavern

Tapas style cuisine options are available but I think this is arguably the perfect place to catch up on some work while overlooking the gorgeous lagoon. Strong Water Tavern is advertised as the following…and I think it’s fair to say this is 100% correct!

this is a true destination lounge in the heart of an island jewel. (Loews)

Although we are by no means rum experts, we enjoyed our visit to Strong Water Tavern after a day exploring Universal Studios.

Drhum Club Kantine

An evening cocktail to end your day is definitely an experience you won’t want to miss and Drhum Club Kantine by the gorgeous pool is the place to do this. A delightful offering of seafood dishes with a hint of Mexican flavor is available at lunch or dinner, while those that prefer a more traditional burger will also be satisfied by the variety of options on the menu.

The signature cocktails are understandably a popular attraction for guests, so whether you are ready to sample a Reggae Rita or a frozen creamsicle, the Drhum Club bartenders will be raring to create the perfect concoction for you.

Hotel Rooms

All of the rooms at the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort offer guests the opportunity to enjoy the island charm that is apparent throughout the hotel. Whether you are staying in a standard two queen room or one of the larger suites, you will find they are spacious, vibrant and offer a wealth of amenities to meet all your needs.

Views overlooking the lagoon or the resort pool ensure that there isn’t a bad room at this hotel and for those of you that really want the ultimate luxury experience, consider booking the Sapphire Suite that is more than 850 square feet.

Guests are known to have their very own “private island” when they stay inside this suite but regardless of your chosen accommodation, you can be sure that your stay will be the epitome of relaxation.

Best Universal Studios Hotel

Are you convinced that Loews Sapphire Falls Resort is the best Universal Studios hotel choice? I am sure folks staying at other Loews hotels on the Universal Resorts property will argue otherwise but based on our experiences, there would need to be something pretty spectacular elsewhere to sway our opinion.

However, before making your final decision, we want to share just a couple more incentives that the Loews Sapphire Fall Resort provides to guests.

best universal studios hotel

These benefits are actually available to guests staying at ALL five of the Loews properties!

  • Early Park Admission – This is HUGE!! If you are an early-bird and want to take advantage of this extra hour, you can enjoy many of Universal Studios’ attractions before any of the large crowds hit! This feature includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Universal’s brand-new water park, Volcano Bay.

best universal studios hotel

  • Complimentary water taxis and shuttle buses – We used the water taxis multiple times each day and it’s an awesome service. I believe they are scheduled to run every 7-10 minutes but we honestly found that every time one taxi was leaving, another one was pulling in (or within a few minutes!). We strongly recommend using this because the short journey passes through a gorgeous stretch of a lagoon with a myriad of tropical surroundings.

  • Complimentary delivery of merchandise – Visitors to Universal Studios will undoubtedly purchase souvenirs and memorabilia during their visit. Rather than worrying about carrying these everywhere, guests at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort can have these delivered directly to the hotel.

Summary

It’s fair to say that we have quickly fallen in love with the Loews hotel brand and this is thanks to the amazing experience we had at the Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Studios in Orlando. We may be a little biased given that we stayed here and if all of the other Loews hotels are similar to Sapphire Falls, you will have no problems at any of these locations.

best universal studios hotel

If you are looking for a tropical paradise without having to travel all the way to Bora Bora, the Maldives or even the Caribbean, be sure to consider Sapphire Falls as a viable alternative. The meticulous detail throughout the hotel makes this an incredible experience for all guests and we are already planning our next vacation to this resort!

In fact, several of the local Gulf Shores and Orange Beach restaurants participating in this event are always preparing signature dishes for visitors to sample so you can be assured that there will be something for everyone to salivate over.

10 Best Waterfalls in Iceland – How to Experience Amazing Beauty?

12

There is something quite magical about the sight and sound of a gorgeous waterfall flowing over the edge of a cliff. Whether you have a fond appreciation of the natural beauty found in waterfalls or simply enjoy the relaxing experience of watching the constant flow of water, we think that we have found the perfect place to quickly become addicted to these attractions – Iceland! When you think about the best waterfalls in Iceland, well it’s almost impossible to come up with a short list given the myriad of amazing falls to be found throughout the country.

best waterfalls in iceland

Iceland may be renowned as having the nickname, the “Land of Fire and Ice” but I would argue that Iceland should be renamed, the “Land of Waterfalls!” For those of you visiting Iceland for the first time, you are in for a real treat. If you choose to stay in one region in Iceland or opt to drive the ring road as we did on our recent trip, you can be sure that an amazing waterfall isn’t too far away.

best waterfalls in iceland

From Seljalandsfoss to Gullfoss and from Gufufoss to Dettifoss, the names of Icelandic waterfalls may not be the easiest to pronounce or spell. However, don’t worry, because we hope that our guide to 10 of the best waterfalls in Iceland will be the perfect inspiration to help you on your way to discovering these spectacular natural landmarks.

Best Waterfalls in Iceland

Our Icelandic adventure started in Reykjavik and saw us venture north before continuing around the ring road to explore all of this gorgeous country in just one week. It was certainly an ambitious road trip but after arriving back in Reykjavik following 1,700 miles of driving, we can well and truly attest that this was a trip of a lifetime!

best waterfalls in iceland

But this post is all about the waterfalls we experienced throughout the 1,700 miles. Iconic waterfalls that are recognized by everyone along with others that are less well-known, including some that we don’t even know the names of, are all experiences that we enjoyed throughout the road trip.

best waterfalls in iceland

Although it’s almost impossible to put together a list of the 10 best waterfalls in Iceland, we wanted to feature our favorites that we visited. We also encourage you to share your favorites by commenting below. Let’s take a look at which Icelandic falls made our list.

Where to Stay?

Looking for the ideal place to stay near these gorgeous waterfalls? If you love camping, there are plenty of camping options available.

However, if you prefer the more ‘luxury’ experience of a hotel, here are a couple of our recommendations in different regions of Iceland.

South Coast

  • Hótel Fljótshlíd – Located less than 8 miles from Seljalandsfoss in the town of Hlíðarendi, this quirky yet comfortable accommodation option is a great choice for anyone planning to stay in this part of Iceland for a few days. Check out the latest prices and availability here.
  • Icelandair Hotel Vik – Vik is frequently seen as the popular spot for visitors to stay along the south coast of Iceland. In addition to Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss is even closer, along with the iconic black sand beaches and basalt columns along the world-famous Reynisfjara shore. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

East Coast

  • Hotel Hallormsstadur – Located 15 minutes outside of Egilsstaðir, this hotel is perfectly situated on Lake Lagarfljot and offers stunning scenery with a variety of accommodation options. We opted for the cottage which is a unique wood cabin with gorgeous views of the lake. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

North Coast

  • Icelandair Hotel Akureyri – We had a great experience staying at this hotel in the gorgeous town of Akureyri. Perfectly situated within walking distance of the historic old town of Akureyri, this is an ideal accommodation option for those wanting to spend a couple of days exploring the northern region of Iceland. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

West Coast

  • Caze Reykjavik Central Luxury Apartments – If you are staying in the city of Reykjavik, you have plenty of options! However, we recommend staying at the Caze Reykjavik Apartments along Laugavegur. Cool, trendy, modern, spacious and affordable are all reasons why this should be on your radar. Check out the latest prices and availability here.

Seljalandsfoss

One of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland is the wonderfully named Seljalandsfoss, located just off Route 1 (the Iceland ring road) along the south coast. A little over two hours from Keflavik International Airport, this waterfall is a must see for anyone visiting Iceland.

best waterfalls in iceland

Take a short hike around the back of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall but be prepared to get a little wet and endure a couple of challenging spots as you clamber up the rocks on the final part of the hike. The trail is pretty slick in parts because of the spray that soaks the area but it’s definitely an experience all the family will enjoy!

best waterfalls in iceland

We had an awesome time experiencing this though we probably should have come a little better prepared in terms of our chosen attire. It’s one of those experiences though that it’s worth getting wet for! If you read our recent post on the best things to do in South Iceland, you will know that this experience is one you cannot afford to miss!

Skogafoss

Just a short drive along the Ring Road heading southeast is yet another spectacular waterfall – Skogafoss! Located on the Skoga River, this waterfall flows over the edge of cliffs that were formerly the Icelandic coastline. As the coast receded towards the present day ocean, the former sea cliffs remained and we are now treated to the breathtaking sight of the Skogafoss waterfall falling 60 meters before flowing out towards the ocean.

skogafoss

So what makes Skogafoss such a spectacular sight? Along with the perfect backdrop of the mountains surrounding this waterfall, there are two unique aspects that make this a popular landmark.

best waterfalls in iceland

As you approach the waterfall, you can frequently see a rainbow illuminating through the spray that is emitted from Skogafoss.

best waterfalls in iceland

If the sight of a rainbow in conjunction with this gorgeous waterfall isn’t enough from the base of the falls, why not climb to the summit for a birds-eye view? A challenging yet rewarding staircase of 475+ steps offers the opportunity for those adventurous enough to enjoy the spectacular sight of Skogafoss along with breathtaking panoramic scenes. Hiking trails along the Skoga river are also available for those heading to the summit.

Gullfoss

Gullfoss is perhaps the infamous waterfall in Iceland that most visitors are eager to experience. Located in the heart of the iconic Golden Circle route in addition to Geysir and Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, Gullfoss certainly doesn’t disappoint and offers breathtaking scenes from a number of viewpoints.

gullfoss

During the summer months, visitors can hike close to the powerful set of falls that are located on the Hvítá (White) river, fed by Iceland’s second largest glacier, the Langjökull.

best waterfalls in iceland gullfoss

We have been fortunate to visit in both summer and winter and each experience offers a unique perspective on the beauty of Icelandic landscapes. Gullfoss is very different in July than December but both offer equally beautiful attractions.

gullfoss waterfall

For those of you that are not really enamored by the sight of waterfalls, we challenge you to visit Gullfoss and not be impressed! This is an incredible scene and when you hear that “Gullfoss” is translated as “Golden Falls,” you can certainly see why.

Faxi

Frequently in the shadow of Gullfoss because of its location on the Golden Circle, I prefer to see the Faxi waterfall as a great attraction worth experiencing before you head to the main attraction.

faxi waterfall

Faxi is a gorgeous waterfall in its own right and although it may be relatively small in comparison to other Icelandic waterfalls in terms of height, at 80 meters in width, it’s a spectacular sight that everyone driving the Golden Circle should add to their itinerary.

When you leave the main road along the Golden Circle, you will be pleasantly surprised at the sight of the Faxi waterfall. It’s actually located in a relatively surprising spot with farmland surrounding the river and this landmark undoubtedly the focal point here.

faxi waterfall

This waterfall is marked on many maps as “Vatnsleysufoss” but we recommend following our link below to find the exact location!

If you are looking for the ideal landscape to capture a perfect photograph, unfortunately, the location of Faxi isn’t particularly suited for the “Wow” shot that many of us are always looking for. However, your focus should be on the falls rather than the surrounding landscape and I’m sure you will agree that this is a pretty awesome sight despite the lack of complimentary scenery.

Accessibility – EASY (From a distance) – challenging to get closer to the falls.

Oxarafoss

For many visitors to the Golden Circle, the final stop will be Þingvellir National Park and after experiencing Gullfoss and Faxi, you could be forgiven for thinking your waterfall experience along this loop couldn’t get any better. However, in the heart of Þingvellir National Park is yet another gorgeous attraction, which is arguably as stunning as the others in this part of Iceland – Öxarárfoss.

oxarafoss best waterfalls in iceland

Öxarárfoss plunges 37 feet over the edge of a cliff along the river Öxará and is one of the iconic waterfalls in Iceland because of its location along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian plates meet. A short walk from the car park gives visitors the opportunity to explore the Mid-Atlantic Ridge along a boardwalk before arriving at the base of Öxarárfoss.

oxarafoss waterfall

This waterfall may not be in the same class as some of the very best waterfalls in Iceland but if you are visiting Þingvellir, this is definitely a must-see attraction. We camped by Lake Thingvellir and took the short drive to Öxarárfoss to enjoy a late night visit.

oxarafoss

Obviously, the beauty of visiting Iceland during the summer months is the unlimited amount of daylight but there was something quite magical about this waterfall during the dusk hours.

Gufufoss

If you choose to venture to the east coast of Iceland (we strongly recommend that you do), you will be rewarded with the sight of Gufufoss along the mountain road between Egilsstaðir and Seyðisfjörður. Plunging 19 meters over the edge, this picturesque waterfall is easily accessible from the road and is one that you can get pretty close to the base.

best waterfalls in iceland

The scenery in the East Fjords area of Iceland is some of the best that the country has to offer.

best waterfalls in iceland

Gufufoss is located in close proximity to a series of other waterfalls, including Fardagafoss, so you won’t be short of natural attractions to see along this scenic drive. As you start the drive into the coastal town of Seyðisfjörður, the scenery is beyond spectacular and visiting Gufufoss is just another gem worth adding to your road trip around Iceland.

Dettifoss

Are you ready to visit an attraction that is reputed as being the most powerful waterfall in Europe? The amazing sight of Dettifoss is incredible and although the location in the heart of Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland is a little “off the beaten path” in relation to other attractions, it’s well worth the effort to visit.

dettifoss best waterfalls in iceland

It’s actually very easily accessible but just takes a while to reach and we recommend staying in Akureyri as this is only a couple of hours from Dettifoss.

dettifoss

A drop of 44 meters is impressive but it’s the power of Dettifoss that has every visitors marveling over the beauty of this waterfall. A number of accessible viewpoints make this one of the most frequently visited falls in Iceland.

dettifoss waterfall

A short hiking trail from the car park leads visitors to a choice of visiting either Dettifoss or Selfoss, both of which are gorgeous waterfalls along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river (the source is the Vatnajökull glacier).

best waterfalls in iceland selfoss

We recommend visiting both but ultimately it’s Dettifoss that will always steal the limelight because of the amazing power. Overlooks at the edge of the cliff and also from a higher viewpoint offer different angles and regardless of the weather, it’s one of those bucket list experiences that you won’t ever forget.

Height – 44 meters (144 feet)
Accessibility – EASY/MODERATE (short hike to the falls and several overlooks)

Godafoss

A visit to Dettifoss will inevitably open the door to visit another of Iceland’s powerful, iconic waterfalls. Godafoss is located along the Skjálfandafljót river which is yet another that originates from the Vatnajökull glacier. Translated as “Waterfall of the Gods,” Godafoss is less than 45 minutes east of Akureyri, so easily accessible for anyone staying in north Iceland.

godafoss waterfall

Trails lead to views along the rim of the gorge on both sides and for those of you that are a little more adventurous, you can clamber across the rocks to get a closer view of the waterfall. Be careful because the spray can cause these rocks to be pretty slick and there is nothing in terms of protective barriers around this trail.

best waterfalls in iceland

Another popular spot to capture the ‘perfect’ picture of Godafoss is from the rocky beach that runs parallel to the Skjálfandafljót river. A rocky staircase leads you to the beach and depending on how adventurous you want to be will determine how close to the base of Godafoss you can reach.

It’s an impressive waterfall and worth every effort you make to appreciate the finer details of this natural phenomenon.

Hraunfossar

Many waterfalls have a very similar appearance in terms of their composition and overall structure. However, that certainly cannot be said about Hraunfossar which is undoubtedly one of Iceland’s most unique waterfalls.

best waterfalls in iceland

The distinctive series of falls and cascades can be seen seeping out of the edge of the Hallmundar lava field and in certain parts, drops of up to 41 feet can be seen. It’s no surprise to hear that Hraunfossar can be translated as “lava falls.”

hraunfossar

Hraunfossar stretches up to 1700 feet along the river with smaller falls continuing to flow into the Hvitá from numerous spots while visitors can enjoy views of this waterfall from a number of vistas along the trail. Take a stroll to the end of the Hraunfossar and look back down the Hvitá river to enjoy a gorgeous panoramic view of this waterfall.

hraunfossar

The uniqueness associated with Hraunfossar makes this a worthwhile experience, particularly given its close proximity to Barnafoss (it’s literally within walking distance), another waterfall that has plenty of character and history surrounding it (more on that soon!)

Barnafoss

Barnafoss is located along the Hvitá river and next to the more impressive Hraunfossar waterfall. Although you would likely be visiting this area to experience Hraunfossar, the history behind Barnafoss is such that you would be well advised to check it out.

barnafoss

Barnafoss is translated as “Children’s Falls” and the story of this waterfall is related to two local boys that were told to stay at home while their parents went to church but instead, opted to follow their parents and take a short cut across the natural arch bridge above the waterfall. Unfortunately, they fell into the river and were never seen again. The mother was understandably distraught and asked for the bridge to be destroyed.

barnafoss waterfall

Today, the waterfall itself isn’t the most impressive and it can be difficult to get a perfect shot because of the narrow gorge. However, I think you will agree that in conjunction with Hraunfossar, the history behind Barnafoss will intrigue you to pay a visit.

Summary

I am sure you have probably established that we had an AMAZING time experiencing some of the best waterfalls in Iceland. It is incredibly difficult trying to limit this list to just ten but hopefully, we have included some of the best worth visiting on your next trip to Iceland.

godafoss waterfall

The one common aspect of all these waterfalls is that they are all relatively easy to access. There are no long hikes required but for those interested in stumbling across waterfalls during lengthy hikes, don’t worry, Iceland has plenty waiting for you to discover.

Regardless of your taste in waterfalls, Iceland has a distinctive blend and I’m convinced that there will be at least one or two that will spark your interest. If you ask us which are our favorites? It’s a million dollar question and honestly, incredibly difficult to answer!

skogafoss waterfall

Having climbed the 475 steps to the summit of Skogafoss and rewarded with a gorgeous rainbow, I have to admit this is one of my favorites, though Dettifoss, Godafoss and of course, Gullfoss are all memorable landmarks we won’t forget!

Feel free to share your list of the best waterfalls in Iceland below and let us know which we cannot afford to miss on our next visit!

14

If you are visiting Iceland for the first time, it’s fair to say that you may feel overwhelmed at the myriad of amazing natural attractions waiting for you to discover. The truth is that Iceland is home to an eclectic blend of natural beauty and unless you are visiting for a couple of weeks, it may be more appropriate to focus on one particular region. Why not start with the south coast which is frequently renowned as the popular hotspot for first-time Iceland visitors? Let’s take a look at the best things to do in South Iceland!

Best Things to Do in South Iceland

From the iconic Golden Circle that is easily accessible from the south coast ring road to the gorgeous waterfalls that can be found along the coast, this part of Iceland is understandably a frequently visited part of the island.

Whether you opt to take day trips from Reykjavik courtesy of the various tour companies that offer daily excursions or you choose to rent a car and explore on your own, we hope that our guide will give you the inspiration to visit the very best things to do in South Iceland.

Did I also mention that you may even spot an Icelandic horse or two on your adventures around South Iceland?

Seljalandsfoss

The south coast is generally renowned as a hotspot for gorgeous waterfalls and Seljalandsfoss is certainly an impressive sight. Seljalandsfoss is 60m in height and is a single drop but the power generated from the water flowing over the edge of the cliff is certainly enough to create a picturesque scene.

seljalandsfoss

One of the most popular aspects of this waterfall that makes this unique and different to many of its Icelandic counterparts is the fact you can actually walk behind it during the summer months and explore this gorgeous natural landmark from a completely different angle.

things to do in south iceland

The short hike can be challenging given the slippery rocks that you have to climb up in the latter part of the trail but it’s definitely worth the effort to enjoy a completely different perspective on the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It’s a popular trail so be prepared to take your time as the majority of this is only wide enough for one person.

things to do in south iceland

We strongly recommend taking appropriate rain gear as you can expect to get pretty wet with the spray of Seljalandsfoss frequently hitting the trail behind the falls. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way what happens when you walk this trail without appropriate clothing but regardless, it was an amazing experience and we have zero regrets at all about doing this!

seljalandsfoss

If you choose to road trip from Reykjavik, Seljalandsfoss is likely to be the first iconic attraction you will visit on your journey through the best things to do in South Iceland. This is also a popular spot for tour groups either on the drive towards Vik or on the return trip.

Eyjafjallajokull

2010 was an iconic year for Iceland and the impact this nation had on the European continent for several weeks. The eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano may be relatively small in terms of size but the disruption this caused on flights heading across Europe was substantial due to the amount of volcanic ash that spread from this eruption.

things to do in south iceland

Today, visitors can gaze towards the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and imagine what life was like here for locals that had to endure the possibility of further eruptions during the summer months of 2010.

The Þorvaldseyri Visitor Centre is a family run business devoted to sharing information to visitors on what life is like living in the shadow of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano along with details of the spectacular event that took place in 2010.

things to do in south iceland

For those of you that are simply passing through, a series of informative boards are available on the side of the road providing a glimpse of the first photographs that were taken after the eruption. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the farmers in this region and locals that had to continue their lives after this natural disaster.

Skogafoss

If you read our recent post on the best waterfalls in Iceland, you will know that Skogafoss was one of our favorites around this beautiful country.

skogafoss

Not only is this an incredible sight from the base, visitors have the opportunity to hike 475+ steps to the summit and admire the spectacular natural attraction from a birds-eye perspective.

skogafoss

Skogafoss is one of the picture-perfect waterfalls used on postcards throughout Iceland. Every gift shop we visited, we stumbled across a postcard or magnet with Skogafoss. When you visit it for the first time, you will quickly see why. With a drop of almost 200 feet, this is the second tallest waterfall in Iceland after only Glymur.

things to do in south iceland

For those that prefer to camp while visiting Iceland, the ground in front of Skogafoss is a popular spot given that this is the perfect setting to wake up to in the morning. In terms of campsites around Iceland, this is one of the more expensive options but it’s worth it for the experience you will have.

Sólheimasandur Plane Crash

Just a short distance from the town of Vik is one of Iceland’s most dramatic photography spots – the plane wreckage along the Sólheimasandur Beach. In 1970, a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane was forced to land on this black sand beach and although all of the crew survived, the airplane was left and today has become one of Iceland’s craziest tourist attractions.

things to do in south iceland

Although vehicle access is no longer available due to local landowners closing access, visitors can take a 4km hike along the beach to reach this lone piece of wreckage. Although we opted against this, it is renowned as a challenging yet rewarding hike given the strong winds that generally can be found along this stretch of coastline.

Reynisfjara

A visit to the beach may not be the first thing you associate with a trip to Iceland but when you experience Reynisfjara you will realize why this is a must-see spot along the south coast.

reynisfjara

A black pebble beach is one of the various features at Reynisfjara that makes this an iconic location but perhaps the Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks in the heart of the ocean that are real attraction here.

reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks

As you take a stroll along the black pebble beach, take a glance to the nearby cliffs and admire the basalt columns that create a pyramid-like structure known as Hálsanef. When you hear that this is a popular spot for wildlife including puffins, fulmars, and guillemots, you will quickly realize that this is a haven that you cannot afford to miss.

things to do in south iceland

Reynisfjara is one of the most iconic beaches in the world. After spending some time here, I realized that you don’t need the pristine golden sands that you associate with tropical islands to enjoy an awesome beach experience.

things to do in south iceland

In fact, the beach at Reynisfjara is the exact opposite and it’s likely that you will be visiting with plenty of layers given the cold breeze you can expect from the ocean. But this is a spot you may well fall in love with…I know we did!

reynisfjara beach

Vik

The coastal town of Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland and sits in the shadow of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Whether you are using Vik as a spot to stay overnight while exploring the rest of south Iceland or you are exploring the gorgeous black pebble beaches and Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks along this coastline, this is undoubtedly a popular spot for visitors.

vik iceland sea stacks

We recently visited Vik on our way back to Reykjavik and stayed overnight at the campsite. However, this was a very different experience to our first visit a couple of years ago when we explored Vik in the heart of winter.

vik iceland

The iconic sight of the church on top of the hill overlooking the town is one that makes Vik a town easily recognizable but it’s those natural landmarks located off the coast that is the main attraction for visitors.

Fjallsarlon

Fjallsárlón is a glacier lake associated with the Vatnajökull glacier. Sitting in the shadow of the infamous Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, this should take nothing away from the gorgeous sight of the Fjallsárlón lake.

fjallsarlon

A short hike from the car park reveals a breathtaking scene with the glacier directly behind the lake and opportunities for visitors to clamber down the rocky slopes to the lake shore.

fjallsarlon glacial lagoon

Large chunks of glacial ice can be seen floating on the surface and during our visit, we had the opportunity to experience a shift in the glacier as a large noise that sounded like an earthquake happened.

things to do in south iceland

Although we didn’t see any ice break away from the glacier, it was apparent that something had happened as the calm waters of the lake quickly changed and everyone exploring the shore had to take a few steps back as the water started to rise.

fjallsarlon

We visited Fjallsárlón late in the day but for those of you visiting earlier, you will have the opportunity to experience an iceberg safari to enjoy this breathtaking scenery as you float alongside the icebergs and a giant glacier.

Jokulsarlon

Iceland has many “must-see” natural attractions and the glacial lagoon known as Jökulsárlón is certainly one of these. Whether you are taking a zodiac boat tour around this lagoon to have an up close and personal interaction with the icebergs that are floating around or simply admiring this natural phenomenon from the shoreline, anyone looking for the best things to do in South Iceland will need to have Jökulsárlón at the very top of their list.

jokulsarlon

Located on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park, Jökulsárlón is not only a popular attraction because of the glacial lagoon that truly is an incredible experience but also because of the icebergs that float along the Jokulsá River and out into the ocean.

jokulsarlon

A visit to Jökulsárlón will be accompanied with a visit to the so-called “Diamond Beach” where you can walk along the beach and stumble across large pieces of an iceberg that have been washed to shore.

Did you know that Jökulsárlón is a popular spot for movies? If there are any James Bond fans out there, you will recall this glacial lagoon in A View to a Kill and Die Another Day while Batman Begins and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has also shot scenes here. It’s an incredible landscape and certainly worthy of featuring in the blockbuster movies.

A word of warning for anyone visiting Jökulsárlón…we visited Iceland in the heart of summer and the majority of the country was comfortable in terms of temperature but it was substantially colder at this glacial lagoon. Be sure to have appropriate clothing because it will likely be very windy and you will want to spend some time outside exploring this gorgeous natural attraction.

Hofn

The charming village of Höfn is another gem along the south coast of Iceland. This is the perfect place to stop if you are planning on venturing further east to stock up on groceries etc. at Netto, while also spending some time exploring the local attractions.

hofn iceland

We walked around the harbor which was home to a number of vessels preparing to head out to sea, while we also noticed a number of restaurants that were pretty popular among visitors that opted to stay overnight in Höfn.

hofn iceland

The town of Höfn offers scenic views of Vatnajökull (largest ice cap by volume in Europe!) but perhaps the most famous reason for visiting this town is to learn about the lobster catch which the local community is proud of. A large volume of Iceland’s lobster population can be found here as local fishermen proudly bring back their catch from their daily excursions out at sea.

hofn iceland

It’s interesting that the word Höfn simply means ‘harbor’ when translated because the focal point of this fishing village can be found on the coast. Whether you are looking to mingle with fellow travelers or simply interact with the locals, you will always find someone taking a stroll around the harbor in Höfn.

Summary

Iceland is blessed to have what seems to be an unlimited amount of amazing attractions worth experiencing. On our recent trip, we spent a week exploring the whole island, covering over 1,800 miles in the process, yet leaving with a feeling that there is still so much to see.

When you think about the best regions to explore, South Iceland is certainly at the very top, not only because of the myriad of attractions and place worth visiting but also because of the easy access to other spots such as the Golden Circle that we barely touched on.

8

Are you getting tired of the searing hot summer temperatures? Do you look forward to the fall season arriving and having the opportunity to head outdoors? This is undoubtedly the best time of the year to enjoy new adventures and for us, there is always one destination that we consider visiting – Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama.

A Gulf Shores and Orange Beach getaway is the perfect tonic to help you recover from a long summer, or perhaps allow you to get away for a few days in preparation for the freezing cold temperatures you can expect in your home town! Hopefully, after reading this post, you will be inspired to add this spot to your list of fall destinations that you cannot afford to miss.

If after reading this post you need even more inspiration, you can always visit Gulfshores.com for more information.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offers the perfect blend of luxury relaxation and adventure and is certainly our go-to destination to enjoy a long weekend getaway at the beach to recuperate from the summer months.

Whether you are couple looking to enjoy a quick fall break, or perhaps a family that has flexibility in their schedules to hit the road and travel, the Gulf Coast of Alabama offers something for everyone. We want to share a brief guide on how you can enjoy a Gulf Shores Orange Beach getaway this fall (or in the future)!

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Getaway

While we hope that you are returning visitors to our blog (or at least will be after reading this post), we have become quite the experts in maximizing our time off work and making the most of weekend getaways. The stereotypical statistics surrounding American travelers frequently losing vacation days is something we refuse to be part of, and we hope that we inspire others to get out and travel the world.

Many destinations can be quite the challenge when it comes to making the most of a weekend getaway, but we would argue Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the perfect destination to showcase our ability to experience the very best a location has to offer in a short period of time.

gulf shores and orange beach getaway

Folks that live in the States will understand that we are not all blessed to have a lot of vacation time so making the most of a long weekend is critical. The Labor Day weekend is frequently the last time of the year where couples and families will consider traveling for a short getaway, but we think waiting until later in the year is an even better option.

Less crowds, cheaper accommodation options, shorter wait times at attractions and restaurants, and yet still perfect weather…it’s a no-brainer to visit a destination like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in late September, October or November.

The Perfect Place to Stay

Looking for the perfect accommodation option for a weekend getaway? Depending on your budget, the Gulf Coast has something for every traveler. If you are looking to sample an extravagant, luxury accommodation, perhaps Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts will be the ultimate choice for those ready to splurge late in the season and enjoy an experience that epitomizes pure relaxation and luxury.

Bask in the sun, sink in the sand, and experience luxury at Turquoise Place, Orange Beach’s premier resort.

Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts

The biggest challenge with staying at Turquoise Place is that the amenities are so awesome that you will be very hesitant to leave.

While there is nothing wrong with that and you can certainly enjoy an epic experience along the Gulf Coast with everything this resort has to offer, after reading the rest of this post, we are sure that you will be itching to get out and sample some of the other reasons why Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is such a popular destination.

Another of Spectrum Resorts’ accommodation options that offers far more seclusion given its location in Fort Morgan is The Beach Club. Having spent several nights here during our recent visits to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we can well and truly attest that this is still a luxury resort with every amenity you will need to enjoy a perfect fall getaway.

If venturing out into the Gulf isn’t your idea of relaxation, check out the 6 (that’s right SIX!) swimming pools that will allow you to relax and enjoy the perfect beach vacation. The philosophy of this hotel is to help you “reconnect and spend quality time with loved ones.”

gulf shores orange beach getaway

In today’s modern era, you may think the term ‘reconnect’ refers to the internet but this is the exact opposite. Leave all of that behind and enjoy a few days relaxing. Everything at the Beach Club will ensure you can do just that!

Reinventing the beach vacation – one family at a time

The Beach Club by Spectrum Resorts

The “Clean Bed” guarantee is a nice touch by Spectrum Resorts to ensure that every family staying at their resort will have a clean duvet. From delicious restaurant options on-site to easy access to the gorgeous private beach, the latter part of the year is the perfect time to spend a few nights at the Beach Club.

So, you have your hotel option figured out…and if we can just take you away from these ultimate relaxation spots for a little while, you will enjoy a plethora of other reasons to visit Gulf Shores and Orange Beach! But first, it’s beach time!

Relax on 32 Miles of Pristine Beaches

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is blessed to have stretches of stunning coastline with pristine beaches that you will want to relax on. When you add the breathtaking sight of the turquoise colored waters, I think it’s fair to say you have found a perfect beach getaway destination.

The 32 miles of Alabama’s white-sand beaches are made almost entirely from quartz grains washed down the Appalachian Mountains thousands of years ago.

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

The idyllic sight of white, sandy beaches epitomizes the coastline along the Gulf Coast and whether you are looking for a quiet place to relax or perhaps enjoy an action-packed volleyball game, there are plenty of options to cater all needs.

gulf shores and orange beach getaway

Public beaches are not hard to find, though if you are fortunate to stay in one of the aforementioned accommodation options with a private beach, your experience may be even better. We have thoroughly enjoyed our experience on the private beaches at both Turquoise Place and The Beach Club by Spectrum Resorts, but regardless of where choose to stay, a gorgeous stretch of pristine sand is never too far away!

Grab your favorite cocktail or margarita and head down to the beach to relax before venturing out to explore everything else Gulf Shores and Orange Beach has to offer.

Embrace Nature in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Did you know that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a hotspot for exploring nature? It’s true, there are a variety of ways you can interact with nature when visiting this part of Alabama. If you are ready to enjoy the gorgeous fall colors and embrace the natural scenery surrounding you, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a nature lovers haven.

gulf shores and orange beach getaway

One of our favorite experiences is to explore the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Don’t worry about having to bring your own bike, because there are free bikes available throughout the 25 miles of paved trails. Simply download the Bloom bike sharing app, scan the QR code on the bike and away you go!

In addition, bike rentals are also available if you prefer to hop on a tandem with your partner in crime, and so there are no excuses to miss exploring these gorgeous trails. While many associate the Gulf Coast with the breathtaking beaches that we mentioned (understandably so…), exploring the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail enable visitors the opportunity to come face to face with nature and enjoy a rather different, unique side of the Gulf Coast.

For anyone with an interest in the flora and fauna of a destination, we strongly recommend setting aside a few hours to explore this incredible landscape.

gulf shores and orange beach getaway

Prefer to be on the water when visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach? A kayaking adventure through Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is a relaxing way to burn a few calories while enjoying the vast amount of wildlife that thrives here. Can you imagine drifting along a river with the breathtaking sight of fall everywhere you look?

However, if biking or kayaking just doesn’t satisfy your appetite, perhaps my favorite way to enjoy nature will convince you to head to Alabama’s Gulf Coast in the near future. Hit the links by visiting Peninsula Golf Club in Gulf Shores to not only test your skills but also enjoy a gorgeous area of perfectly manicured landscape, where wildlife and nature continue to embrace the man-made links.

peninsula golf course

Golfing in the fall is the perfect season to enjoy the best weather and perhaps shoot your best round! Cheaper tee times, less crowds, and perfect temperatures allow golfers of all standards to enjoy the collection of courses on the Gulf Coast. Regardless of your score, you cannot help but enjoy this environment before heading to the 19th hole to reflect on your experience.

Enjoy Delicious Cuisine

Fine dining in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach may not be the first thing you think about but this destination arguably offers some of the best cuisine options that we have experienced on our travels. If you love seafood as much as we do, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is undoubtedly the place to visit. But even if seafood isn’t at the top of your list, there are plenty of other options available to satisfy your taste buds.

gulf shores and orange beach cuisine

One of the best aspects of visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is having the opportunity to sample one of the pre-defined cuisine trails. Forget about the bourbon trail in Kentucky and instead focus on one of the following delightfully sounding trails…I don’t know about you, but we’re sold on ALL of these!

  • Beach Burger Trail
  • Crab Trail
  • Fresh Fish Trail
  • Gumbo Trail
  • Oyster Trail
  • Shrimp Trail

Don’t worry, for those with a sweet tooth, there is even a Key Lime and Bread Pudding trail to salivate over!

I don’t want to give too much away in terms of the best restaurants worth visiting because you will just have to experience them for yourselves. However, if you want our personal favorites, here is where we would recommend:

brick and spoon orange beach

You could quite easily associate each of these with the above trails but of course, a visit to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach should be about sampling a variety of dishes and this destination certainly has endless opportunities awaiting you!

Don’t forget to sample of one the main awesome coffee shops in the area to ensure you have plenty of energy to experience everything the Gulf Coast has to offer. The Southern Grind Coffee House is one of our favorites, but you certainly cannot go wrong visiting any of these vibrant locations. Check out the best local coffee shops in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for more information and perhaps you will be inspired to visit several during your next visit.

Summary

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach continues to have a place in our heart and hopefully, after reading this post, you will see why! If you are looking for a fall destination that has everything you wish for during the summer months along with a variety of other attractions that can be enjoyed all year round, please consider Gulf Shores and Orange Beach as a viable option.

gulf shores and orange beach

Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive – How to Enjoy This Amazing Loop?

5

Beauty can be found in pretty much any situation. Whether you are expecting it or literally stumbling across it, nature has a way of creating spectacular landscapes that are waiting for us to discover. We all make plans and itineraries to try and experience the infamous natural attractions in a destination but what about those hidden gems that you find when you are least expecting it? This is exactly what happened during our visit to the Canadian Rockies and we enjoyed the amazing Lake Minnewanka scenic drive.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Ok, so Lake Minnewanka may not exactly be a “hidden gem” given that it’s easily accessible from the towns of Banff or Canmore but if you are focused on visiting the likes of Lake Louise or some of the other iconic attraction in Banff National Park, it’s feasible that the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive may slip away from your attention. Please don’t let this happen because after reading this post, I am convinced that Lake Minnewanka will be firmly at the top of your radar when you next visit Banff.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Renowned as a “wonderful scenic drive in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in the eastern area of Banff” by Dangerous Roads (this is a great website for finding some of the world’s most spectacular drives), Lake Minnewanka is obviously the heart and soul of this drive but don’t let this fool you because there are plenty of other attractions waiting to be discovered as you take the short drive just outside of Banff town center.

Where to Stay in Banff

If you are staying in Banff National Park or just outside, you will be conveniently located to the start of the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive. Just a short drive from the heart of the town center, this is a great spot to visit early in the morning or even late at night to watch the gorgeous sunset.

Here are a couple of our favorite hotel recommendations in the area based on our experiences and some of our friends that have stayed in the area.

Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive

At only 24km in length, the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive is relatively short and if you were planning on just driving this loop, you could feasibly do this in 20-25 minutes. However, I am about 99.99% certain that you will need a little more time to experience this drive because there are ample opportunities to get out and explore the surrounding beauty.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Whether you are an avid hiker or want to kayak around Lake Minnewanka, there are plenty of reasons to spend a full day exploring this part of Banff National Park. We will go into a little more detail on each of the attractions we visited but one of the intriguing aspects of taking this scenic drive is you never quite know what wildlife encounters you will face. We actually experienced this drive twice just so that we could try to find more wildlife and each time we stumbled across something different.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Bighorn sheep are frequent visitors to Lake Minnewanka and the road that loops around it. Be sure to take the drive slowly because you never know if a group of bighorn sheep will be waiting for you around the next corner.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

If they are, don’t worry, they will likely take their time to get out of the way and they won’t worry that your vehicle is heading straight for them.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

I also like to remind folks when you face encounters like this, you are heading into their natural habitat so PLEASE respect them and don’t do anything that may scare them!

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Cascade Ponds

As you approach the start of the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive, you will immediately have the opportunity to explore Cascade Ponds. This is a perfect spot to capture gorgeous pictures with the pond serving as a natural mirror and creating awesome reflections of the mountains in the background.

cascade ponds

Cascade Ponds is a popular spot for visitors to enjoy a picnic or take a stroll around the lake. A bridge offers easy access to cross over the lake while also offering a focal point for avid photographers looking to capture the perfect shot.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

A breathtaking view of the towering Mount Rundle is also available and be sure to try and spot the many waterfalls that are cascading over the edge of the mountains.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

Lake Minnewanka

A short drive from Cascade Ponds will give you the opportunity to start the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive from one of two points. Whether you choose to start at Johnson Lake or opt to start out at Lake Minnewanka, your journey through this spectacular landscape is about to start.

lake minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is a 21km long glacial lake that is ideal for swimming, fishing, and canoeing along with a myriad of hiking and bike trails to accommodate visitors that prefer to stay on dry land. If you have read many of our recent blog posts on the Canadian Rockies, you will know that I love using the phrase “epitome of beauty”…well, I think we have another perfect example that fits into this category.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

It’s no surprise that Lake Minnewanka is one of the popular spots in the middle of summer for visitors and locals alike. Scenic boat cruises are available around the lake to Devil’s Gap, while this lake is the only one throughout Banff National Park that allows limited power boat use. Personally, I think a kayak or scenic cruise is much more appropriate but to each their own!

lake minnewanka scenic drive

There are numerous spots where you can park your vehicle and then wander around the shoreline admiring the incredible scenery. Enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of this location as time passes you by without a care in the world.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

It’s one of those iconic locations that is perfect to just grab your favorite book and sit in a typical Canadian Adirondack chair. The only problem, your eyes will all too frequently be drifting away from your book and marveling over the natural beauty in front of you…Nice problem to have though right?

Two Jack Lake

If you think Lake Minnewanka offers spectacular scenery, wait until you arrive at Two Jack Lake. Our friends, Brian and Amanda from Eat Work Travel, told us about this spot having visited it just the week prior to us heading to Banff National Park. We can’t thank them enough because I have to admit that Two Jack Lake is possibly at the very top of our list in terms of breathtaking locations.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

The perfect destination to enjoy a picnic or simply take a stroll along the banks of the lake, Two Jack Lake is everything you could wish for in terms of offering scenery we associate with the very best of the Canadian Rockies. Walking along the shore of Two Jack Lake leaves you with a close-up and personal encounter with the pristine water and the picture-perfect mountain range providing the ideal backdrop.

two jack lake

Prefer to just sit and relax while admiring the awe-inspiring scenery? Idyllic red Adirondack chairs are available and situated perfectly to help you capture those pictures that will help cherish the memories you create at Two Jack Lake. It’s just one of those locations where you can’t help but fall in love with.

lake minnewanka scenic drive

We recently shared this image on our Instagram page and we were delighted to see that the BBC Travel Instagram page shared this as their chosen picture to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary!

two jack lake

It’s fair to say we were pretty honored and definitely supports our recommendation that Two Jack Lake is one of the BEST attractions you cannot afford to miss when exploring this part of Canada.

Johnson Lake

The final stop on the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive (or first stop if you choose to take the ‘opposite’ route) is Johnson Lake. Unfortunately, the road accessing this landmark was closed and we opted to continue our journey rather than hiking over to the lake.

However, we are delighted to collaborate with a couple of our friends that have recently experienced Johnson Lake to show this gorgeous part of the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive. Thanks so Raymond Walsh from Man on The Lam and Lotte Eschbach from Phenomenal Globe for sharing these awesome images with us!

In hindsight, if we had a little more time we would have explored this lake because, from all the pictures we have seen, it is yet another spectacular landmark worth experiencing.

For the avid hikers out there, Johnson Lake is a 1.9-mile loop trail that is suitable for all skill levels offering a myriad of overlooks and scenic viewpoints that will likely make this trek a little further than you first imagined given that you will be stopping to take pictures.

If you prefer to simply relax by the lake as we did at Two Jack Lake, there is a sandy beach area that offers a perfect spot to enjoy the lake along with picnic tables and washrooms.

Summary

Are you inspired to experience the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive? Just writing this post makes me miss this part of Banff National Park even more and we both agree that this has jumped to near the very top of our list of favorite places around the world. The beauty is unquestionable and the experiences to be had here are unlimited.

Favorite spot on this drive? There may be a hint of bias but Two Jack Lake certainly has our hearts now and this is definitely a spot we will return to in the future. Throughout the drive, there are numerous overlooks that you will quickly fall in love with and when you hear that it’s a hikers paradise, well it’s a perfect destination for everyone visiting the Canadian Rockies!

Why Climbing Diamond Head Needs to Be on Your Radar?

0

“Climb mountains not so the world can see you, but so you can see the world!” When David McCullough Jr. spoke these words, it’s feasible that he didn’t realize quite the effect he would have on travelers like ourselves. Every aspect of this statement is true and certainly relatable to anyone that enjoys exploring the great outdoors. During our recent visit to Oahu, we embarked on the challenge of climbing Diamond Head, a crater in the heart of Honolulu. We want to share our experiences and challenges, while hopefully inspiring you to visit this incredibly popular attraction.

diamond head state monument

For those of you that are frequent hikers, I am sure there is very little difficulty in climbing to the summit of Diamond Head. However, for myself and Heather who rarely take the time to experience the beauty of hiking, it was an experience we were looking forward to though we had no idea what to expect.

climbing diamond head

I will admit that the hike itself is relatively easy and you can easily complete the hike to the top and back to the bottom in under two hours (this will give you enough time to enjoy the incredible views at the summit).

Let’s take a look at what you can expect when you start climbing Diamond Head State Monument.

Diamond Head State Monument Information

One of Hawaii’s most iconic natural landmarks, Diamond Head State Monument is understandably one of the most popular attractions for visitors and locals alike to experience. If you are interested in taking this climb to the summit, be sure to visit at the appropriate time otherwise you may leave disappointed.

diamond head state monument

Opening Hours

Diamond Head is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The key time is 4:30 PM which is the LAST time that you can start hiking the trail to the summit. The gates to Diamond Head are locked at 6:00 PM daily and all visitors must be out of the park by that time.

Admission Fee

Parking is very limited but if you are fortunate enough to find a space, you will be charged $5 admission fee for your vehicle and that includes all occupants.

If you are not quite as fortunate and you visit the parking lot when the “full” sign is shown, you will be required to drive about a half mile back through the tunnel and down the hill to find alternative parking. This is a catch-22 situation because you can find free parking and then only pay $1 admission fee per person but on the flip side, you have a pretty lengthy uphill hike just to reach the entrance.

climbing diamond head

Not only was this our first time visiting Diamond Head but we had the unfortunate experience of seeing the parking lot closed two vehicles in front of us, so our journey started from the very bottom. At least we could say we had the full experience of climbing Diamond Head!

Visitor Center

Diamond Head offers an interpretive kiosk along with an opportunity for visitors to purchase memorabilia to remind them of their visit (and hopefully successful completion of!) to this iconic hike. Whether you are a magnet or postcard collector, you can be sure that there will be something here to provide the perfect memory of your time on the hike.

Be sure to wander over to the mobile van serving drinks and snacks because you might have the opportunity to enjoy a freshly cut pineapple or a piña colada inside a fresh coconut! You will deserve a refreshing beverage after this hike.

History of Diamond Head

Diamond Head is the name of a volcanic tuff cone located on Oahu and the crater was formed approximately 300,000 years ago after an explosive eruption sent ash and fine particles in the air. As the ash settled, it created a rocky perimeter for the crater that we see today.

climbing diamond head

In 1968, Diamond Head State Monument was recognized as a National Natural Landmark, while the crater was used as a strategic military lookout in the early 20th Century.

By the time you reach the summit of Diamond Head, you will be in for a real treat. The views across Oahu and the Pacific Ocean are breathtaking. In fact, there are no words to describe the stunning views that you can admire once you reach the highest point. Trust me, it’s worth the effort as you will see!

diamond head crater

Let’s look at some of the facts of this climb:

  • Total length of the trail is 0.8 miles in each direction;
  • Elevation increase of 560 feet from the crater floor to the summit;
  • Visitors will pass through a narrow tunnel measuring 225 feet with very little light available;
  • 175 total stairs, all of which are narrow and probably the most challenging aspect of the whole trail.

climbing diamond head

Climbing Diamond Head Trail

Our journey started from the very bottom of the hill as we took our time walking up the side of the road and through the tunnel to the entrance of Diamond Head State Monument. There is ample free parking at either Diamond Head Memorial Park or the Kupuna Education Center so you may want to consider just parking here rather than wasting your time and effort driving further up.

climbing diamond head

After paying our admission fee, our adventure started! The first part of the hike starts relatively flat on a concrete walkway. However, it’s not long before the gradient starts to increase and you leave the perfectly maintained surface for an uneven, rocky trail that continues to narrow as you make your way up.

climbing diamond head

Although the climb isn’t particularly difficult, taking care of your footing is the most challenging along with watching hundreds of fellow hikers passing you in both directions. There are numerous spots along this trail where it’s only wide enough for single-file, so you may find yourself pushed up against a rock waiting for folks to move on through.

climbing diamond head

Although the majority of visitors will be enjoying the hike at a leisurely pace, there are plenty of locals that run this hike (and I literally mean run!) every day so be aware of your surroundings and let anyone wanting to pass by just move right along.

climbing diamond head crater

Don’t worry, there are plenty of spots along the trail where you can stop to enjoy the scenery. One of the intriguing aspects of this hike is that the shape of Diamond Head’s crater becomes more prominent the higher you climb.

diamond head state monument

As we reached the final section of climbing Diamond Head, this is certainly where it was the most challenging.

A Challenging Yet Rewarding Finale

After climbing a short yet steep staircase, we immediately entered a tunnel which I know Heather struggled with. The steep climbing of the stairs followed by a real sense of claustrophobia as there was zero light in this narrow space was definitely a challenge.

diamond head stairs

It doesn’t help that we are both tall but using our cell phones for light, we made our way through the tunnel and turning the final corner we were relieved to see sunlight as we approached the final climb.

diamond head state monument

The final climb is actually a staircase with 99 incredibly steep, narrow steps. Fortunately, there is a gorgeous spot between the tunnel and the staircase to catch your breath and enjoy some more epic panoramic views of Oahu. With only the final section to go, we realized we were almost there.

climbing diamond head

We started climbing the stairs and soon arrived at what we thought was the summit, only to find out there was yet another challenging part.

climbing diamond head

Clambering through the observation station that is at the top of Diamond Head is again not really suitable for taller visitors but you don’t climb all the way to the top without making that final push to complete the challenge.

climbing diamond head

Sliding through a narrow gap that required us to get on our hands and knees, we made it!

climbing diamond head

The views are incredible and you could easily spend hours up here appreciating this scenery.

climbing diamond head

There are a number of different viewing angles and higher points that you can enjoy but the scene overlooking Waikiki Beach and downtown Honolulu with the Pacific Ocean to the left is one that we will cherish for a long time.

climbing diamond head

By the way, the journey back to the bottom is much easier but I think that’s probably stating the obvious. Just be careful where you walk as it’s still easy to stumble if you are not aware of your surroundings.

climbing diamond head

Summary

Climbing Diamond Head was an amazing experience. I am incredibly proud of Heather for overcoming her fears inside the tunnel and I know that when we reached the top there was a real feeling of accomplishment. I think the quote below sums up our feelings as we contemplated the climb to the summit of Diamond Head.

Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway. (Earl Nightingale)

Why Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland Is an Amazing Attraction?

Are you ready to experience an amazing geological phenomenon? Be prepared to enjoy a breathtaking landscape of natural beauty when you enter Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, located in the heart of the North Island in New Zealand.

New Zealand is certainly not short of natural beauty and perhaps this country could be forgiven for allowing some of the most impressive sights to go unnoticed given the abundance available. But having explored Waiotapu on our recent trip to New Zealand, this is definitely an attraction you cannot afford to miss.

waiotapu thermal wonderland

We have been fortunate to experience some amazing geothermal locations around the world, in particular, Geysir Thermal Park in Iceland and of course, Yellowstone National Park’s very own Old Faithful and accompanying geysers. However, after visiting Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, we can well and truly attest that this is a spectacular attraction that ranks alongside these more recognized attractions.

waiotapu thermal wonderland

Let’s take a look at why Waiotapu (or Wai-O-Tapu) has quickly become one of our favorite attractions in New Zealand.

Why Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland?

If you are planning a trip to Auckland or the North Island, be prepared to rent a car and head south to the Rotorua area. This is the ultimate geothermal hotspot in New Zealand and along with Waiotapu, you will find a number of other attractions that are worth visiting. You will also likely spot a myriad of geothermal activity as you drive around Rotorua…in fact, you can’t miss it!

waiotapu thermal wonderland

Did you know that Waiotapu is translated as “sacred waters” in the Maori language? This is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre in New Zealand and well worth visiting if you have a few hours (or at half a day if you want the full experience!) to spare.

We opted for Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland mainly because the name sounded really cool! In all seriousness, we heard a lot of great reviews about this place and given that we headed to Rotorua pretty late in the day, we wanted somewhere that we could explore in just a few hours.

waiotapu thermal wonderland

We later found out that this is feasible but in all honesty, you could spend quite a bit more time here enjoying the surroundings (as long as you can take the strong smell but more on that later)

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland Information

Before delving into our awesome experience at Waiotapu, we want to share some of the all important information with you so that you can be fully prepared for your visit in the near future (hopefully after reading this post you will be ready to book a trip to New Zealand…I know we are ready to go back!)

Location/Address

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is located a short distance from the town of Rotorua on New Zealand’s North Island. Our visit to Waiotapu saw us drive from Hamilton which was our base for a few days and the distance was approximately 142 km (88 miles) that took a little over 1 1/2 hours.

Self-Guided Tour of Waiotapu

Grab a map of Waiotapu inside the Visitor Center and be prepared to have the most amazing experience wandering through a myriad of geothermal landmarks that will literally take your breath away (perhaps because of the smell but also because the scenery is so spectacular).

As I mentioned, we arrived around 4:00PM so we immediately felt like we had to pick up our speed as we experienced everything Waiotapu had to offer. This is an experience you can visit in a couple of hours but in hindsight, we would have preferred to arrive earlier in the day to appreciate more of this natural beauty.

waiotapu trails

There are three distinctive trails available at Waiotapu, each with varying length and difficulty. Dependent upon how much time you have will determine how many of these trails you want to tackle. We opted to go all out and hike all three trails! Each trail requires you to have completed the previous one. Here are the distances and anticipated amount of time required for each trail:

  • Trail 1 (Highlighted by red line on map) – 30 minutes (1.5km)
  • Trails 1 and 2 (Highlighted by red and orange lines on map) – 40 minutes (2km)
  • Trails 1,2 and 3 (Highlighted by red, orange and yellow lines on map) – 75 minutes (3km)

Let’s take a look at the three trails separately and highlight some of the best features you can expect to stumble across on your journey. The beauty of Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is that you literally cannot get lost…as long as you keep to the trails which you are required to do primarily for your own safety!

Geothermal Beauty Along The Red Trail

Our journey through Waiotapu’s Thermal Wonderland started the moment we stepped outside the Visitor Center as we embarked on a short walk up a steep incline and noticed the steam emitting from the stream that was flowing parallel to the walkway.

The smell of sulphur wasn’t immediately noticeable but that soon changed as we arrived at an opening and started admiring some of the popular landmarks at Waiotapu.

All of the iconic geothermal landmarks are named as you explore Waiotapu and we quickly stumbled across Thunder Crater and Devil’s Home as we continued to be intrigued by everything we saw.

Trust me when I say that your journey through Waiotapu only gets better and better the deeper into this “wonderland” you go.

One of Waiotapu’s infamous attractions is Artist’s Palette for many reasons. Not only is this a geological phenomenon but it’s a breathtaking scene of color that immediately captures your attention.

It’s perfectly named as the array of colors creates a vibrant landscape that is a photographer’s dream. Many of Waiotapu’s landmarks have very subtle colors but the Artist’s Palette’s vivid scheme provides visitors with the picture perfect location that instantly makes you want to return to this attraction.

The large steaming pool that has a seriously pungent smell is known as “The Champagne Pool.” It is renowned as being the largest of Waiotapu’s hot water springs.

A series of earthquakes in New Zealand have tilted the spring, causing strong mineral water to flow over the crusted surface.

As the above effects took place, this in turn has created the striking colors that we see today with the various minerals becoming apparent throughout the landscape – hence the name Artist’s Palette!

You can read more about what each colors represent when you explore Artist’s Palette as there are a series of information boards highlighting the key characteristics of the geology in this region.

Explore The Spectacular Orange Trail

By the time you reach the start of the second (orange) trail, you could be forgiven for thinking that your experience at Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland couldn’t get any better.

If you follow the directions of the arrows on the map, you will head through a wooded area where you may be fortunate to see some wildlife roaming around but it’s the return trip where you walk alongside the geothermal pool that is really spectacular.

waiotapu mud flats

We opted to venture along the final part of Waiotapu’s trail system (yellow) but after experiencing that, we headed back to enjoy the second half of the orange trail alongside the wonderfully named “Primrose Terrace.”

This area of silica deposits may not be the most eye-catching landmark at Waiotapu but it’s certainly one that you will appreciate given the vast expanse of land it covers. It’s the epitome of a geological mud flat that we associate with geothermal landscapes around the world.

The Challenging Yet Rewarding Yellow Trail

The final section of Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is renowned as being the most challenging but the reality is that for anyone capable of hiking a short distance up and down a few stairs, you will be perfectly fine. The hardest part is avoiding stumbling into the geothermal pools that you walk across, simply because you are in awe at their inherent beauty.

The journey along the yellow trail begins at Bridal Veil Falls as you clamber down a pretty steep incline and then start your adventure across a landscape with cliffs surrounding you and pools emitting warm steam in front of you.

If you love the thought of being part of a geothermal experience, this is certainly the place to take a moment and contemplate your surroundings.

Our tour continued as we weaved in and out of the trail, overlooking the stunning Frying Pan Flat, before heading back around the Oyster Pool and up a series of steps leading to the finale at Waiotapu. Trust us when we tell you, it’s worth the wait in gold (or sulphur which is probably more appropriate here!).

Lake Ngakoro is a breathtaking sight. A fluorescent bright green lake stands in front of you as you reach the end of the advertised trail at Waiotapu.

There is an additional trail that will take you around the lake but you are pretty much on your own with this one as the map ends at Ngakoro.

You may be wondering what makes this lake so green? Don’t worry, we were thinking the same also! It is caused by the sulphur and ferrous salts mixing in the water, so I don’t think this is somewhere you would want to take a swim though I have to admit it looks pretty inviting.

We felt pretty fortunate to have the opportunity to experience Lake Ngakoro and we spent about 10 minutes just stood there admiring the views.

It was a pretty secluded spot at the end of the trail but just as we started our hike back to the Visitor Center, one of the local park rangers was informing people Waiotapu was preparing to close. We would have been extremely disappointed if we hadn’t see Lake Ngakoro but luckily we made it just in time!

We did have time to wander past the Devil’s Bath aka “pool of Mountain Dew” that was yet another example of fluorescent green water at Waiotapu.

Don’t Forget the Mud Pools

As we left the car park at Waiotapu pondering the amazing experience we had, we almost missed one last attraction – the Mud Pools. Accessible either when you are entering Waiotapu or leaving, we soon found out that this “hidden” attraction is one that you cannot afford to miss.

waiotapu mud pools

After reading about the history of this mud pool, it seems that this was the site of a large mud volcano that was destroyed through erosion in the 1920s. Today, it’s one of the best examples of erupting mud in New Zealand.

There are a couple of different viewing platforms where you can access the mud pools and it’s actually a quirky experience to listen to the sound of the mud “exploding” as it erupts, while you may be fortunate to see a few larger eruptions at this site.

Don’t worry though, you are not likely to see mud flying over the barriers and instead, it’s a more calming sight to admire the unique character of this geological phenomenon.

Summary

Waiotapu has done a great job creating three distinctive trails around this area. Each one provides something a little different in terms of geothermal activity yet still creates an intriguing experience regardless of how much or how little you choose to see.

Our only regret was that we didn’t have more time to spend admiring all of the attractions at Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland. We strongly recommend visiting earlier in the day to allow more time but even if you visit late in the day, you can certainly make your way around all three trails in a little over one hour.

Favorite spot at Waiotapu? I have to say we both agree on two places! Lake Ngakoro is stunning, simply because of the apparent seclusion here (it’s possible that is just because we were one of the last visitors to arrive here) and the gorgeous green color of the water. It’s one of the most photogenic spots we discovered around the North Island of New Zealand. Secondly, the Champagne Pool/Artist’s Palette is another breathtaking landscape with a myriad of colors blending together to create an amazing sight.
