Room Cougar – Unlock the Secrets of Your Next Hotel Stay

When planning a trip, there is one thing I am sure you would all agree is a frequent nightmare: booking a hotel room only to find it doesn’t live up to its online photos and the experiences shared in reviews! For those of you reading this that experience frequent hotel stays throughout the year and across the globe, I am sure you can relate to this challenge. Maybe the view isn’t as promised, the room layout feels cramped, or the décor is from another era. We are delighted to share a new platform that we recently discovered that certainly aims to change the game of hotel stays. Room Cougar offers a revolutionary way to book hotel stays with confidence.

These frustrations can quickly turn a dream getaway into a disappointing experience. But what if you could see every detail of the exact room you are booking—before you even arrive? Room Cougar is transforming the way we choose accommodations, giving travelers an up-close and personal look at hotel rooms across the globe. This game-changing platform offers not just transparency but also a community-driven approach to make every stay exactly what you imagined.

Room Cougar Videos – See Before You Stay

Room Cougar has a core mission to create community driven videos for every hotel room around the globe. Their goal? To give travelers an authentic, unfiltered look at what they are booking, as opposed to the delivered default photos we stereotypically see on hotel websites. From the layout of the room to the exact view from the window or balcony, these 1-3 minute videos capture all the details that traditional photos and descriptions often miss.

To make this endeavor even more exciting and attractive to travelers, Room Cougar is paying $50 per video! So, if you are a frequent traveler or simply love to explore local hotels, this could be your chance to turn a simple recording into some extra cash. All you need to do is highlight the room’s unique features—whether it’s a sprawling panoramic view in the heart of New York City, cozy furnishings in the Great Smoky Mountains, or a stunning sunset view in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach—and let Room Cougar take care of the rest.

These videos go beyond static pictures, giving you a comprehensive walkthrough of the room. You will have the opportunity to see how the space flows, where the furniture is placed, how much natural light filters in, and even the little details like the condition of the bedding and bathroom fixtures.

How to Make the Perfect Room Video

Making a video for Room Cougar is simple, and you will not need any expensive video equipment—your smartphone will do the trick. Here are a few tips for creating a standout submission:

  1. Start with the Entrance: Show what it’s like to walk into the room, giving viewers their first impression.
  2. Highlight Key Features: Cover the bed, seating area, desk, and storage spaces. Don’t forget unique touches like artwork or special amenities.
  3. Focus on the Bathroom: Travelers care about bathroom size, cleanliness, and extras like a soaking tub or rain shower.
  4. Capture the View: Open the curtains, step onto the balcony, or pan across the window to show the full view.
  5. Keep It Real: Authenticity is key. Avoid filters or editing tricks so viewers get a true sense of the space.

This innovative approach allows travelers to see what they’re paying for, with no surprises when they arrive. It’s not just about showing off luxury suites—Room Cougar wants to capture all types of rooms, from boutique hotels to major chains, so every traveler has access to the information they need.

With Room Cougar’s videos, you will never have to wonder if the “deluxe room with a view” actually has a view or if it’s worth the upgrade. Now, you can book with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect when you walk through the door.

Community Forums for Honest Feedback

Room Cougar goes beyond just visuals by providing a discussion forum for every hotel room. Users can chat about their experiences, share tips, and discuss the pros and cons associated with each room. Whether you are wondering if the pillows are truly as plush as the photos suggest or need insights on noise levels, these forums are your go-to resource.

This innovative feature allows travelers to connect and share detailed insights about their stays, offering the kind of transparency and firsthand knowledge you will never find on traditional booking sites. Instead of relying on vague, generic reviews like “great stay” or “wouldn’t book again,” you can dive into Room Cougar’s forums to see exactly what past guests have to say about that specific room.

Is it quiet or near a noisy elevator? Does the air conditioning work well? How’s the water pressure in the shower? Does the “garden view” actually look out over a parking lot? These are the kinds of real-world details you’ll find in Room Cougar’s community-driven discussions.

What Makes Room Cougar Community Forums Unique?

The forums are more than just a place for reviews—they are a space for travelers to connect and share their love of exploring. Whether you are a frequent flyer, a road-tripper, or a staycation enthusiast, Room Cougar’s community welcomes everyone. By contributing to discussions, you are not just helping others, but also benefiting from their experiences and building a network of trusted fellow travelers.

  1. Room-Specific Feedback: Unlike traditional reviews that lump all rooms in a hotel together, Room Cougar’s forums focus on individual rooms. This means you’ll know if room 510 is the hidden gem with a fantastic view or if room 102 is plagued by street noise.
  2. Ask Questions: Not sure about a feature? Post your question in the forum, and other travelers can provide answers based on their firsthand experiences.
  3. Pro Tips from Fellow Travelers: Get advice on how to make the most of your stay, from which rooms are the most spacious to which ones are closest to the pool, gym, or other amenities.
  4. Discuss Pros and Cons: Every room has its strengths and weaknesses. Room Cougar’s forums encourage honest, constructive conversations that help travelers make informed decisions.

Travel Planning 101: How to Use Apps to Manage Your Entire Trip

Planning a trip can be both exciting and stressful, especially when juggling multiple aspects like flights, accommodation, activities, and transportation. We have always found that trying to stay organized with so many different moving parts to be incredibly challenging but of course, with technology, there are many different platforms out there to help you stay organized. Travel apps in particular have transformed the way we organize and execute our travel plans, making the process much more efficient and enjoyable.

Whether we are looking for ways to stay on top of the initial planning phase, or perhaps keep you right on track with your scheduled itinerary, finding the perfect app on your cell phone is a great way to ensure a seamless experience, leading to an enjoyable vacation. Traveling across the global can be a daunting prospect if you are unorganized but after reading this post, we hope you are eager to get out and explore the world and have a handy companion in your pocket to help ease any nerves you may be facing.

Best Research/Travel Inspiration Apps

The first step in any trip is deciding where to go and what to do. While we hope that you will check out our blog for a plethora of inspiring travel ideas, we also understand there are many other options out there. Travel apps like TripAdvisor, Pinterest (to check out some of our favorite travel bloggers inspiring content), or Google Travel help with this phase by offering user reviews, destination highlights, and recommendations.

It goes without saying that you can be given “information overload” when trying to narrow down your destinations, but this is all part of fun when it comes to planning either a domestic or international trip. Whether you are looking to browse destinations based on your interests, or perhaps just looking for something to fuel your wanderlust, the myriad of apps available on mobile phone and tablets are endless.

When it comes to initial planning, we prefer to use our iPad simply because of the larger screen to pick out inspiring destinations. By using filters to explore destinations based on weather, budget, or season, we are able to narrow down to a shortlist before making our final decision.

Trip Booking Apps

Once you have determined your chosen destination(s), it’s time to book flights, accommodations, and transportation. Dependent on how spontaneous you want to be will likely determine whether you opt to book all of these initially, but we frequently like to leave booking our hotels until later, especially if we are taking an international adventure where we may try to visit multiple locations. As long as we have our return flight booked, we usually like to leave room for spontaneity (this is not for everyone, especially if you are on a tight budget).

arches national park

We generally prefer to book our flights through direct airline apps to maximize the loyalty programs, but for those that travel less and more interested in convenience, utilizing an app such as Kayak, Expedia, or SkyScanner likely will be an attractive option. We have used all previously with positive experiences, and again it’s really about your personal preference as to which route you choose to take to book your trip.

Apps such as those referenced above are beneficial to have on your phone because you can setup price alerts to notify you when selected routes drop in price. In addition, you can frequently setup flexible date searches to identify the cheapest days to fly. A quick tip for occasional flyers, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s are stereotypically the cheapest days of the week, with Friday’s and Sunday’s the most expensive.

Allyz TravelSmart App

One of our favorite apps that is available on both iOS and Android, is the Allyz TravelSmart application. Not only does this app provide everything you need to stay organized by keeping all of your itineraries in one spot, it also can give you the peace of mind while you are on your trip by providing an all access information hub.

Whether you are looking to find a local healthcare facility, or perhaps just seeking destination-specific safety and security alerts, the Allyz TravelSmart is the “all in one” app that can make your travel planning and experiences on the road much simpler. If you are using Allianz Travel Insurance to protect your trip, you can keep track of your travel protection plans though the app.

With 24/7 access to a customer support agent through the app, this is definitely a no brainer to add to your list of must have apps before you head on your next trip! When you think about the perfect electronic companion, Allyz TravelSmart is certainly one of the best.

Discovering Local Things to Do

Once you have navigated your way through airports and arrived at your destination, it’s time to get out and start exploring. Many of you may plan walking tours, or daily excursions ahead of your visit, while others may prefer to keep your itineraries open to allow for spontaneity. Regardless of your preference, having access to apps such as Viator, GetYourGuide, and our favorite, CityPASS, is a great way to explore destinations. While CityPASS is only available in select US cities, it is a great way to experience a selection of iconic attractions at a discounted rate.

lisbon walking tour

Sometimes, the best part of travel is discovering those truly unique experiences that you cannot find in any guidebook. Apps like Airbnb Experiences, Peek, and ToursByLocals offer one-of-a-kind opportunities led by locals with insider knowledge of their city. From private cooking classes with a local chef to immersive cultural experiences like traditional music or dance lessons, these platforms are great for travelers looking for something off the beaten path.

bratislava walking tour

Summary

With the right set of travel apps, you can easily manage every aspect of your trip, from booking and planning to staying organized and connected on the go. Embrace technology to streamline your travels, allowing you to focus on what matters most—enjoying your adventure.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a month-long international adventure, these apps make travel planning easier, more organized, and far less stressful.

The following is a list of local coffee shops we visited but again, there are plenty others that deserve to be on your radar.

Sanctuary on Main

One of Clarksville’s most unique coffee shops can be found at Sanctuary on Main. Originally known as “Yoga Mat”, this location has transformed into an eclectic coffee shop offering great local sourced coffee made with house-made syrups and a variety of homemade bakery items. Visitors can enjoy a specialty latte such as “The Bees Knees” (Cinnamon & Wild Honey), or “The Flower Child” (Wild Honey & Lavender), but don’t worry, for those that prefer a caffeine free option, there are plenty of alternative creations available.

While this location has transformed into a coffee shop for locals and visitors alike to relax, the original yoga classes can still be experienced in the adjoining room. Those attending yoga sessions are asked to observe “Mouna”, the art of silence, to truly embrace the experience and work on both physical and mental wellness.

Founding Frothers

In the heart of downtown Clarksville, Founding Frothers is perfectly situated to capture locals and visitors looking for a quick espresso while exploring the downtown area. Themed around America’s Founding Fathers, the play on words with the name of this coffee shop is equally represented with the decor throughout the interior of this small yet quaint abode.

A trip to Clarksville wouldn’t be the same without paying a visit to the whimsical Miss Lucille’s Marketplace. Home to a myriad of booths offering local crafts, produce, and more, this warehouse is home to 52,000 square feet of pure joy, with a guaranteed something for everyone.

Miss Lucille’s Coffee Shop, Clarksville, TN

For those of you that have visited Music City and experienced the best local coffee shops in Nashville, you will know that two of the iconic spots worth visiting are Frothy Monkey and Bongo Java. While Nashville is only a short drive from Clarksville (less than one hour), you don’t need to worry about leaving Miss Lucille’s Marketplace as you can experience this espresso inside the coffee shop.

Enjoy a Snickerdoodle or Old Fashioned, or perhaps a frozen Banana Pudding Smoothie will intrigue your tastebuds before burning off a few calories exploring the vendor’s shops.

Plumb Line Coffee

One of Clarksville’s finest locally owned coffee shops is Plumb Line Coffee located near the heart of the downtown area. Plumb Line is an espresso and slow bar that presents shots using Clarksville’s first (and only) Synesso Hydra Espresso machine. A visit to Plumb Line is more than just a visit to any regular coffee shop.

Visitors are provided a taste of the culture and country where the coffee beans were grown, creating a unique experience than any coffee aficionados cannot help but fall in love with. Recognized as a “third wave” coffee shop with visitors able to drink coffees from around the world, or you can buy a bag to take home and enjoy.

For those of you unfamiliar with the “third wave” concept in coffee shops, it is a movement in coffee marketing emphasizing high quality. Beans are typically sourced from individual farms and are roasted more lightly to bring out their distinctive flavors. Included in the third wave meaning is the emphasis on where the coffee beans are grown. Most of the growers sourced by Plumb Line Coffee are located in Third World countries.

“These are organic beans, raised without herbicides and chemicals, grown by individual farmers and not commercial entities, and harvested by hand. Special grinders are used in processing the beans”

Bill Parker, Co-Owner of Plumb Line Coffee

The Thirsty Goat

Ready to experience a craft beer garden and an artisanal coffee shop all in one location? Head over to the wonderfully named “Thirsty Goat” coffee shop to enjoy all of this and much more. As their motto goes, “It’s whatever floats your goat!” when it comes to determining whether you want to enjoy your favorite espresso beverage, or perhaps indulge in a craft beer while enjoying one of the many handcrafted pizzas on offer.

Whether you are visiting for breakfast, or perhaps want a late afternoon snack and brew, The Thirsty Goat offers a vibrant, trendy environment for locals and visitors alike to enjoy what has been transformed into a funky hangout composed of some of the most amazing people you will ever meet. Don’t forget to sample one of the homemade pastries, or cream sodas…you won’t leave disappointed!

Summary

It doesn’t matter where we are traveling in the world, the availability of local coffee shops is something we cannot help but explore. A trip to Clarksville, TN was no different, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to uncover some real gems. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list, and as with many locations, local coffee shops come and go but this is certainly a collection I would expect to continue serving locals and visitors alike in the near future.

Whether you are inspired by the European decor at The Amsterdam Local Cafe, or perhaps intrigued by the story of “third wave” coffee at Plumb Line Coffee, you can be sure there is something for everyone in one of the many amazing coffee shops in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Enjoy a Mother/Daughter Weekend Getaway to Gulf Shores

My mom and I try to get away once a year even if it’s just a few hours away. If you are looking for a great getaway with your mom or someone special, there are a plethora of amazing destinations to choose from but in my opinion, only one place springs to mind! Heading to the Gulf Coast of Alabama to enjoy all the amazing attractions, restaurants, and of course, pristine beaches, is undoubtedly the perfect getaway for a mother/daughter trip.

How to Pick the Perfect Destination

When you think about taking a trip with someone, you discuss attractions, where to stay, where to eat right? The first part is discussing where to go, and of course, picking a location can be difficult. When you have a destination that is relaxing, comforting and really feels like home that decision is made so much easier. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is that place for us and our family, and I hope after reading this post, you will be ready to book a long weekend getaway to experience everything this stretch of coastline has to offer.

gulf shores beach alabama

My mom and I had been talking about taking a trip and honestly, it was easy to pick the destination…the months of planning is certainly the biggest challenge. We were able to head down for a few days and were able to participate in the 50th anniversary of the National Shrimp Festival. This was a first time attending and we were so excited. Regardless of whether you are planning a trip in the Fall, or perhaps looking at organizing a long weekend getaway for Spring Break, you can be assured that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach will have something all year round.

Where to Stay on the Gulf Coast

Have you ever stayed on the beach and felt like you were in a futuristic city hotel? That is exactly what we felt like booking through Young’s Suncoast at Sea Glass 210, as a trusted management property for nearly 50 years in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach gives us piece of mind knowing the accommodation will be top notch. As you step into a modern chic room where you can watch the sunset on the patio, watch the fireplace while you sip your favorite cocktail then lay your head on the most relaxing bed.

The Gulf Coast – Retail Therapy for Everyone

Our visit was packed full of experiences, sampling delicious local seafood (and more), and most importantly, experiencing once in a lifetime type of moments together.

When I say that I just wanted to take a trip with my mom and relax that was exactly what I thought we were in for. Instead, it turned into mom fulfilling dreams, watching her get excited, taking a break and showing her how thankful I am to have her as my mom – this is exactly what the Gulf Coast can create for you and your loved one(s).

southern grind orange beach

Shopping in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach has it all. A mother/daughter trip wouldn’t be the same without finding time for a little retail therapy. From outlet malls to novelty shops, we shopped them all. The beach theme was evident throughout, and we experienced several of my favorites like Southern Grind, The Salty Palm, and The Wharf (to mention just a few). It’s safe to say our retail therapy was very successful.

Coastal Arts Center – Glass Blowing Experience

Experiences are pouring out from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Whether you want to play some crazy golf, conquer a coffee or food trail, or try your hand at making art there are so many things to do. My mom has always wanted to try glass blowing, and The Coastal Arts Center has an experience that allows you to make an item of your choice. It was the perfect bucket list item for us to do together.

coastal arts center gulf coast

We arrived a little earlier just for me to show mom around and shop a little inside. The masterpieces that are on showcases inside are exquisite and it’s inevitable that you won’t be able to resist taking something home with you. In addition to shopping, there is pottery, yoga, a pier that goes into the bay, and of course the glass blowing experience.

We started with a quick but detailed run down of everything we would need to do. I think mom was actually surprised that we would be the ones making it. She chose a flower and I opted for a starfish. We picked our colors and to the fire we went. It was amazing to see her in action loving every minute of the experience and doing things that you visibly saw make her heart happy. A few weeks later a package arrived that we were so happy to see with our handcrafted creations ready to display.

Annual Shrimp Festival

Have you been to the Annual National Shrimp Festival before? It’s safe to say that we are going to be annual visitors now. We had a blast with all the vendors and listening to some amazing music right by the water.

shrimp festival gulf shores al

With the waves crashing against the shoreline from the Gulf of Mexico, music playing, shopping and a myriad of food options, we loved every minute. We visited two separate days that we were there and experienced amazing food, relaxing listening to music, enjoying some amazing tea, and a whole lot of shopping from local and regional vendors.

shrimp festival gulf shores al

Some notable vendors that we loved getting to know both days was East Hill Honey Co., for delicious locally crafted honey, and Persimmon Creek Originals for one of a kind cutting boards. With so many vendors to experience, I am sure we missed some places, but it was such a great event and we cannot wait to return in the future.

Best Local Places to Eat on the Gulf Coast

As if we didn’t get enough food at the Shrimp Festival, we somehow found space to explore a few of my favorites and even added new ones.

soul bowlz gulf shores al

Soulbowlz for brunch is the perfect, healthy, get your day going kind of meal. There are so many choices and options, and while we have tried making them at home it’s never quite the same.

oyster house gulf shores al

Southern Grind (either at The Wharf or Indigo Hotel) is a great option for any meal or just to grab your favorite espresso. With plenty of great decor and specialty gifts available for purchase, this is a must-visit on your trip to the Gulf Coast. We had breakfast there and it was a hearty way to start our day for shopping and festival fun.

We also tried The Original Oyster House for dinner which is actually my first time here. Why has it taken me so long to try this? Needless to say, there are a plethora of diverse menu options that mom and I couldn’t wait to sample. We had a mini buffet of our own – a definite pro tip is to try the Huckleberry Lemonade… thank me later!!

A visit to High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas, where the daiquiri flights and food are definitely top notch, is certainly a memorable experience you should add to your itinerary. We tried to be as healthy as possible but with so many delectable options, you cannot help but splurge when key lime daiquiris are on the menu.

A Little Surprise by The Beach Moms

Everything about this trip was so perfect, but I had one final surprise waiting for my mom. While we talked about options for where to eat dinner that evening, I had been working on an experience with The Beach Moms that I hoped my mom would love. While I love giving surprises, my mom hates them. I can’t keep secrets and she always ends up spoiling it because she gets it out of me.

For this last night surprise, I never told her anything until shortly before we headed down to the beach for this amazing experience. I told her what to wear, I told her what to bring and while she hated being out of the loop, she thankfully trusted me.

the beach moms beach picnic

I told her let’s go down to the beach before dinner. We walked out and I stalled a little bit making her even more suspicious about what was happening, and I told her let’s go for a walk. We walked over to a gorgeous picnic on the beach where one of The Beach Moms and I had been cooking up a special treat for her.

They had asked me if it was for anything special and I said just because she’s amazing and I wanted to show her how amazing she is. They didn’t disappoint. I expected a surprise…I expected “oh my gosh”…I expected relaxation and hanging out on the beach with mom on our final night. However, I didn’t expect my mom to cry, and for it to be so overwhelming that she didn’t think she would ever be treated as special as she is.

beach picnic gulf shores al

My mom does everything for everyone and her self care is last or rarely taken care of at all. This trip was all about showing her how amazing she has been to me, and how lucky I am to have her as my mom and to guide me to be who I am.

For that, I am forever thankful and grateful that we got to spend these moments at what I consider to be the perfect destination for this and much more. Being together watching the sunset, listening to 80s music and having an assortment of snacks just being in the moment without distractions was blissful.

A Perfect Mother/Daughter Weekend Getaway

This was literally a memorable mother/daughter weekend trip that we both will enjoy and be thankful we have each other for the rest of our lives. With another mother/daughter weekend getaway in the books, I have no idea how I am going to top this but I’m up for the challenge. Stay tuned until the next trip.

Please share your favorite Mother/Daughter moments in the comments below. We would love to hear from you all, bonus points if you share tips from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach!

Explore Port Royal State Historic Park

Let’s start with one of the most historic locations in the Clarksville area. Port Royal State Park has played a significant role in shaping the historical landscape around this part of Tennessee, dating back to 1797 when the town of Port Royal was first founded. Today, visitors can enjoy an informative ‘townsite tour’ by the park ranger, and we were fortunate to experience a personal tour which is a great way to learn about this part of the state.

port royal state park clarksville

Throughout the 19th century, Port Royal played an integral role given the creation of a tobacco inspection point and it’s proximity to both a river and also being part of the Trail of Tears Highway. This regional town flourished due to the frequent presence of flatboats passing through the area to have their tobacco inspected, and subsequently sold which helped the growth of the area. Unfortunately, due to technological advancements (namely the creation of rail transportation), the demise of flatboat transportation saw the area begin to suffer, along with the American Civil War.

trail of tears clarksville

One of the best reasons to visit Port Royal beyond the history, is this is the perfect location to represent a microcosm of perhaps the US. Everything is interconnected, whether it’s from the story of enslaved men, women, and children, to the Cherokee nation, and agriculture and commerce.

You can see with your own eyes where a town that once prospered slowly saw generations move away due to technology, but how this area has been preserved is a credit to the local state government as it truly offers a unique perspective on life in the 19th century.

Visit Fort Defiance Civil War Park & Interpretative Center

Another of Clarksville’s historic attractions can be found at the top of a bluff above the confluence of the Red and Cumberland Rivers. Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretative Center offers visitors the opportunity to explore this historic fort that played an integral role in the Civil War. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, this area became a trading center and settlement before being captured by Union forces during the Civil War in 1862.

Today, visitors can take a meandering walk through the site, exploring the iconic canons that are scattered throughout the park, before heading inside to learn all about this location. The more than 1,500-square-foot Interpretive Center features exhibits about Clarksville and the surrounding area, along with the fort during the Civil War years.

Before leaving, head outside on the patio to enjoy epic panoramic landscapes of Clarksville, and if you choose to visit late in the day, you may well be rewarded with incredible sunset pictures with a gorgeous backdrop.

Local Coffee Shops

We love exploring the local coffee shop scene when we visit a new destination, and Clarksville was no different. It’s fair to say, Clarksville did not disappoint and while we only visited a small number of the local establishments scattered across the town, we had amazing experiences at each one of them.

the amsterdam coffee shop clarksville

Perhaps our favorite was the first one visited during our stay – The Amsterdam. This European style coffee shop has a great atmosphere, with Dutch inspired decor providing the stereotypical European vibe. We sampled two of the seasonal favorites – a Belgian Biscoff Latte, and a Chai Latte. While the taste of the coffee is undoubtedly the most important, presentation is definitely appreciated and The Amsterdam goes the extra mile to ensure your preferred drink is perfectly prepared and appetizing.

Other coffee shops in the area that are worth visiting include, Founding Frothers (love the name!), Sanctuary on Main Street, The Thirsty Goat and inside Miss Lucille’s Marketplace. Again, these are just a small number of available options but you cannot go wrong with any of them, or the other local spots that make Clarksville a haven for coffee aficionados.

Local Restaurants

When it comes to finding the best places to eat in Clarksville, there is no shortage of awesome local restaurants awaiting your visit. Whether you are planning to head downtown to sample one of the various local spots, or perhaps prefer to enjoy a relaxing dinner overlooking the gorgeous Cumberland River, there are countless options to satisfy every appetite.

the mailroom clarksville tn

Upon arrival in Clarksville, we wanted to find something close to our Airbnb. Located in the heart of downtown, Strawberry Alley Ale Works is a great option if you are looking for delicious local dishes, combined with a selection of craft ales on tap. Recognized as a restaurant offering a combination of chef-inspired food, expertly made craft beer, and perfectly situated in the heart of downtown, Strawberry Alley Ale Works is a place like no other.

We opted for one of the iconic burgers and fish and chips for our dinner options, but it’s fair to say you couldn’t go wrong with anything from the menu. Combine that with the 1820 Kölsch from the craft beer and cocktail menu, and you will quickly realize you made the right choice visiting this restaurant.

mailroom patio clarksville tn

Other options close to this restaurant include several with awesome rooftop patio dining areas – The Mailroom and Skyline 500 are two of the best options if you are looking for sunset views while indulging in your meal, but there are several other places that are equally enticing.

beer cheese blackhorse pub

We visited the Blackhorse Pub & Brewery to sample the infamous “beer cheese” which doesn’t disappoint, while our trip to Liberty Park Grill overlooking the river was another great choice. Regardless of what cuisine option you are looking for, Clarksville likely has something to satisfy your palate.

Experience Customs House Museum

If you chose to visit Port Royal early in your itinerary, head over to the Customs House Museum in the heart of downtown to learn much more about the history of the region. Located inside a historic building dating back to 1898, originally constructed as a Federal Post Office and Customs House to handle the large volume of foreign mail created by the city’s international trade in tobacco, today this museum is home to over 22,000 artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, and books.

The Customs House Museum is the state of Tennessee’s second largest museum and offers a combination of award-winning exhibitions, interactive exploration areas for children, and beautiful spaces for special events. A self-guided tour throughout the various museum floors will give a historical perspective on the area, along with highlighting some of the iconic sports starts from this part of Tennessee – namely the iconic Olympian, Wilma Rudolph, who was the first woman from the United States to receive three gold medals in a single Olympic Games.

Other stories to be uncovered here include the story of Pat Summitt, possibly the most infamous women’s basketball coach from her tenure overseeing the Tennessee Volunteers. Don’t forget to head on down to the banks of the Cumberland River to explore the Pat Head Summitt statue. Walking around this museum and admiring what was the area of the post office is an enlightening experience, especially as you consider how this location relates to the nearby Port Royal townsite.

7 Day Europe Itinerary – How to Plan an Epic Trip

Traveling throughout Europe is an incredible experience, and one that everyone should plan on doing especially if you are considering visiting this continent for the first time. Whether you are intrigued by the prospect of seeing Big Ben in London for the first time, or perhaps enjoying a romantic walk by the River Seine in Paris, the opportunities to explore Europe are endless. From weekend getaways to longer stays, a trip to Europe should be carefully planned to ensure you are maximizing your time. While we tend to focus on maximizing weekend getaways, we want to share our thoughts on how you can prepare the ideal 7 day Europe itinerary, and perhaps you will be inspired to book a trip in the near future.

barcelona

How to plan a trip to Europe for only 7 days? It’s a million dollar question, and one that can be extremely challenging and particularly daunting for those that are infrequent travelers. Thanks to the wonderful platforms and technology that we have readily available at our fingertips, this experience is much easier than you may first think.

london

Thanks to the amazing public transportation system, cheap flights, and other ways to get around Europe, exploring a variety of European destinations in a short time is certainly feasible. Click here for details on creating optimal travel plans between destinations to ensure you are ready to go with your dream European trip!

While our recommended itinerary is only a suggestion, our number one tip that we will always reiterate during any trip planning is to allow time for spontaneity. You could easily be forgiven for wanting to cram everything there is to see in Europe in a short time, but the reality is you have to be realistic about what you can accomplish.

lisbon

Before we take a look at some suggested week long itineraries exploring some of the spectacular landmarks and sights in Europe, we want to provide you with some of our best tips on planning this type of an adventure. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments as to what you believe to be an optimal 7-day itinerary across Europe, along with any additional tips and tricks that you have found to be beneficial.

berlin

7 Day Europe Itinerary

Before you start thinking about possible itineraries, take a few minutes to think about the answers to the following questions:

  • Are there any “must-see” destinations on your bucket list that you need to ensure are on this itinerary?
  • Do you have a preference over how you connect between destinations (e.g. do you prefer to travel by train, flights, rental car etc.)?
  • Is your focus to see highlight attractions that are infamous to the location, or do you want to look “off the beaten path” to enjoy local experiences?
  • How ambitious are you in terms of how much you wish to see inside one week?

While you don’t need to have 100% concrete responses to each of these, having a few ideas will enable you to develop a much more efficient itinerary that works for your travel style. There is no right or wrong answer to planning a European week-long itinerary, but the better you plan, the more enjoyable the experience will be!

luxembourg

How to Begin Planning an Itinerary?

Ok, so you have established the basic answers to the above questions and you are ready to start planning. Take a dart and throw it against a map and see where it lands in Europe! Maybe not the most data-driven decision but for the truly spontaneous travelers out there, perhaps that’s the best approach. Alternatively, and what we believe to be better recommendation, would be to look at your starting point.

amsterdam

If you are traveling to Europe from another continent, your initial flight into a major European hub will likely determine how the itinerary will take shape. Whether it’s London, Paris, Frankfurt, or Milan, there are endless options to start your journey. You may even find a nation’s “second city” to be a better alternative, so be prepared to shop around and consider all your options.

Once you determine your starting point, map out 2 or 3 locations you don’t want to miss. From there, you can start building out a daily schedule of attractions, landmarks, and of course, those local hidden gems that truly creates a memorable experience in Europe. With so much rich history, heritage, and culture, you have to be willing to uncover some of these lesser known gems in order to truly appreciate the inherent beauty of this continent.

Spontaneity vs Strict Schedule

Creating an itinerary can frequently lead to people thinking this is a strict schedule that you must follow in order to make the most of your trip. Careful planning of the itinerary actually allows for some spontaneity and flexibility which alongside the organization of the initial schedule will create an even better experience during your visit to Europe.

swiss alps

An example of this would be if you are planning a 7-day trip and want to visit three destinations. You could consider spending two days in each, and then allow for one additional day to either add a smaller location en route to the next location, or perhaps you will find that 48 hours in a city (which in most destinations will be true!) is simply not enough to barely scratch the surface and you can spend an additional 24 hours there.

Maximize the spontaneity of your trip planning with the flexibility of an eSIM Europe for your cell phone. Staying connected 24/7 during your travels allows you to explore without limits, access maps, and stay in touch effortlessly. With an eSIM, you can adapt your plans on the fly, ensuring you’re always ready for unexpected adventures, last-minute changes, or spontaneous detours while traveling across Europe.

Our Favorite 7-Day European Adventures

The options are endless and the opportunities to explore Europe in 7-days create so many thoughts in our minds because it’s a ideal timeframe to explore a couple of your favorite destinations. While we want to emphasize that if you are able to add more time, this will enhance your trip even more, we realize that building at most a 7-day adventure is frequently what many people can afford both in terms of budget and time constraints.

swiss alps

Admittedly, we have several favorite itineraries that we have experienced in Europe across the period of 7-days (or less in some cases).

England, France and Belgium
Day 1 & 2 - London
Day 3 & 4 - Paris
Day 5 & 6 - Brussels

The above schedule allows you to spend an extra 24 hours in one of the above cities, or perhaps you will be inspired to take a day trip to Stonehenge, Normandy, Versailles, or other iconic location in one of these countries.
Switzerland, France, Luxembourg and Germany
Day 1 - Zurich
Day 2 - Strasbourg
Day 3 - Luxembourg
Day 4 & 5 - Frankfurt
Day 6 & 7 - Berlin

An action packed itinerary that combines a blend of iconic cities, with some lesser known "second cities" but equally spectacular with plenty of historic landmarks to visit.
Switzerland, Austria and Czech Republic
Day 1 - Geneva
Day 2 - Swiss Alps
Day 3 - Zurich
Day 4 & 5 - Vienna
Day 6 & 7 - Prague

While many itineraries will frequently showcase a countries spectacular urban landscapes, we think the above itinerary offers a nice blend of rural beauty with the journey through the Swiss Alps being one of the most incredible anywhere in Europe. Whether you opt to rent a car, or in our opinion the best option, take the train, this is an unforgettable experience you won't want to miss!

turquoise place bathroom

Every morning we would wake up and head outside to enjoy the sunrise, before heading inside to enjoy a light breakfast thanks to the awesome amenities available. The Kitchen-Aid ice machine in the bar area was perhaps my favorite appliance, especially given that it was frequently used throughout our stay.

On-Site Amenities

While staying at Turquoise Place is primarily about the incredible condos on offer, you cannot help but also enjoy the selection of other amenities that truly creates this epic experience. Although Turquoise Place is not really considered an “all-inclusive” resort, I would argue that it perhaps could be given that you rarely need to leave with everything on offer.

Cost vs Benefits

Many people reading this post will understandably think that there is one factor that deters them from staying at Turquoise Place – the cost! Is Turquoise Place worth the price? 100% yes!!

turquoise place orange beach

While at face value, Turquoise Place may be at the higher end of the budget spectrum, the larger condominiums (3, 4, or even 5 bedroom options) are perfect for friends and family to come together and book a vacation together. When you split the cost among multiple families, and with the knowledge that you are staying in perhaps the finest accommodation option on the Gulf Coast, this is definitely worth the price to pay for staying in such a luxurious experience.

Highway to the Sky – Enjoy a Scenic Drive in the Rocky Mountains

Scenic drives through national parks create memorable experiences, with breathtaking panoramic landscapes frequently the highlight of these journeys. The drive through the heart of the Rocky Mountain National Park is no different, and given the elevation that you reach during this epic experience, it’s no surprise to hear that this route is recognized as the “Highway to the Sky”. Whether you are traveling from Estes Park westbound, or returning from a visit to nearby Utah exploring the Mighty 5 national parks in the Beehive State, this drive is worth adding to your itinerary, especially given that there are only limited times of the year when this is actually accessible.

highway to the sky road colorado

Visitors to the Rocky Mountains may associate this area with mountain towns such as Vail, Aspen, and Telluride, but its the Highway to the Sky drive that certainly offers landscapes unlike anywhere else in the US. At its highest point, the Trail Ridge Road, as it is also known, peaks at a staggering 12,183 feet in elevation which is the highest continuous paved highway in the U.S. Visitors venturing out from either Estes Park or Grand Lake climb around 4,000 feet in elevation in a few minutes, starting in a montane ecosystem comprising of aspen and pine before entering sub-alpine forests.

highway to the sky drive

Let’s take a look at what makes the Highway to the Sky road such an epic experience, and why we encourage you to pay a visit here sooner rather than later to enjoy these incredible landscapes as much as we did.

Highway to the Sky – Grand Lake to Estes Park

If you are heading to the Rocky Mountains from the west, the quaint, historic town of Grand Lake is surrounded on three sides by the national park. Located just a mile from the park’s west entrance, Grand Lake, offers incredible family friendly activities from paddle boating and nature walks to awesome theater productions.

grand lake colorado

The gorgeous lake is perhaps the highlight of the town and is also the largest and deepest natural alpine lake in Colorado, but many also associate Grand Lake with the start of the Highway to the Sky drive!

During the winter months and when the Highway to the Sky road is closed, the drive between Grand Lake and Estes Park, Colorado can take over 3 hours via I-70. However, during the summer months, visitors can enjoy the spectacular 48 mile drive through the heart of the Rocky Mountains and experience breathtaking scenery unlike anywhere else in the US.

rocky mountain national park entrance

The scenic drive requires at least 2 hours of driving but visitors can extend this dependent on how much time you want to experience the myriad of attractions and viewpoints along this route. Crossing the Continental Divide at Milner Pass at 10,759 feet, this drive encompasses a series of hairpin curves, steep inclines, and various spots where you can pull to the side of the road to enjoy the epic panoramic views.

continental divide rocky mountain national park

The road is usually open from around Memorial Day through mid-October but always check ahead of your visit to ensure you are not left disappointed and a fairly substantial detour to connect between two of Colorado’s iconic alpine towns.

Alpine Visitors Center

Regardless of which direction you are traveling, this drive is certainly worth packing a picnic so that you can enjoy an epic relaxing lunch (or dinner) with spectacular panoramic views. One of the perfect spots to either enjoy your picnic or to learn more information about the Rocky Mountains is the Alpine Visitors Center near the highest point on the road. This is the highest elevation visitor center in the National Park system at 11,796 feet above sea level.

highway to the sky drive

Visitors can use the restroom, head inside the visitor center to learn more information, and then head out to hike some of the trails where you may well feel like you are on top of the world. The scenery around this part of the drive is beyond breathtaking, and while pictures will never do this experience enough justice, we hope you are inspired to add this drive to your next Colorado itinerary.

With sweeping views of the valleys below, this is also a great opportunity to see some of the infamous Rocky Mountain wildlife such as bighorn sheep, bobcats, mountain lions, deer, coyotes, among other species.

Scenic Overlooks

The Highway to the Sky drive offers ample scenic overlooks, but two of our favorites are the ideal spot to capture magical sunset shots if you are visiting the area during the Golden Hour. Both Many Parks Curve and Forest Canyon Overlook offer near 360 degree panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains with little to interfere with the inherent beauty of this incredible national park.

highway to the sky scenic views

The first true hairpin curve along Trail Ridge Road, Many Parks Curve is undoubtedly one of the most popular spots for visitors to pullover to enjoy the incredible scenery. Some of the highlights of this view include Bighorn Mountain (standing at 11,465 ft.), and Horseshoe Park below to the east. Admire this scenery before venturing on towards Forest Park Canyon, which we have to say was our favorite spot.

highway to the sky drive colorado

Peering down into Forest Canyon nearly 2,000-feet below the viewpoint, visitors can take a short walk from the parking lot to the overlook and pick out some of the Rocky Mountains’ most iconic landmarks. On a clear day, visitors will enjoy epic views of Longs Peak, towering into the Colorado sky at 14,259 feet. Other peaks include Stones Peak (12,922 ft.) and Terra Tomah Mountain (12,718 ft.).

highway to the sky scenic overlook

Regardless of your desire to be able to pick out certain peaks, you should allow yourself to indulge in the beauty that surrounds you. The scenery is unlike anything else we have experienced, and these overlooks (along with several others) allow you to be transcended into the heart of the Rocky Mountains without having to hike miles into the national park to experience the sight of alpine vistas, and towering peaks.

Capitol Reef to Arches National Park – Enjoy an Epic Weekend Trip

0

The iconic Mighty 5 national parks in Utah offer an exhilarating experience with eye-catching landscapes and panoramic views that inspire visitors to return year after year. Our visits to Utah have seen us explore all of these epic parks, and perhaps the least known is also the trickiest to visit – Capitol Reef National Park. If you are heading south from Salt Lake City towards Moab to explore Canyonlands and Arches, this is a great time to take a quick detour and pay a quick visit to the heart of Utah to explore Capitol Reef. Whether you are road-tripping in your own vehicle, or perhaps prefer to grab a RV rental to explore the Mighty 5 national parks in Utah, this is definitely an experience not to be missed.

Ready for an epic weekend getaway? Let’s take a look at how you can travel from Capitol Reef to Arches National Parks during the same weekend and perhaps catch a glimpse of inherent beauty of both.

capitol reef national park

A trip to any of Utah’s Mighty 5 national parks deserves much more than 24-48 hours to explore, but if you are pressed for time or perhaps looking to stay in the gorgeous accommodation options available in Moab, it’s feasible to explore Capitol Reef before heading across to the eastern corner of the state.

Our visit to Capitol Reef was actually in reverse, after we headed west from Denver to spend the night in Moab and then enjoy an early morning drive through Arches before venturing across to Capitol Reef. I should add the caveat that we have visited Arches several times previously, so our focus on this trip was to spend as much time as possible in Capitol Reef given that this was the final national park in Utah that we had to visit.

capitol gorge scenic drive capitol reef

Capitol Reef to Arches – How to Get There

The drive between Capitol Reef and Arches is straightforward however, to be transparent, there is very little in eastern Utah outside of these areas designated as national parks, and so driving along the interstate and then lesser known roads can lead to several hours of very little scenery. However, the ultimate focus should be on the end goal which is arriving at the entrance to Capitol Reef, so whether you are heading there from Salt Lake City, Moab, or other area of the Beehive State, the drive is well worth it.

utah state line

A drive that is a little over 2 hours between Capitol Reef and Moab ensures that visitors should always have this lesser known park on their radar. You could even consider using Moab as a base to explore Arches, Canyonlands, and take a day trip to Capitol Reef but ultimately it depends on your personal itinerary and how much time you want to dedicate to each park.

To add a little context, Capitol Reef is accessible from the following Utah cities and landmarks:

The Landscape of Capitol Reef National Park

While Capitol Reef is frequently considered the least well-known of all the national parks in Utah, you may be surprised to hear that this is actually the second largest after Canyonlands National Park. Much of Capitol Reef surrounds the Waterpocket Fold geological formation, and the park itself runs predominantly north to south, at 60 miles long and only 6 miles wide.

capitol reef national park

The park can be explored via a self-guided driving tour that meanders through the inherent beauty on either side, but as with most national parks, Capitol Reef is best explored on foot by visiting many of the breathtaking trails. Capitol Reef is essentially divided into three key areas, namely the Fruita Historic District, Cathedral Valley District, and the Waterpocket Fold.

The Fruita Historic District is the most frequently visited and most accessible part of the park. Many of Capitol Reef’s infamous attractions are located in this park area, just off Highway 24. The Cathedral Valley District is much more remote and the rugged landscape of this region is highlighted by towering rock formations, impressive scenic drives, and the iconic Temple of the Sun and Moon.

The heart of Capitol Reef is frequently considered the Waterpocket Fold, and along with parts of the Cathedral Valley District, you will need an AWD vehicle in order to explore the great outdoors in this part of the park.

Visitor Information

As with many national parks, Capitol Reef relies heavily on the entrance fees in order to help fund the preservation of this area of natural beauty. Visitors to Capitol Reef will pay $20 per vehicle, but unlike many national parks, there is no official entrance station and guests will follow the honor system and self-pay at either the visitor center or the north end of the Capitol Gorge Scenic Drive.

The visitor center is a great place to visit prior to heading along the Capitol Gorge Scenic Drive, not only to pay a quick visit to the restrooms before heading out into the park, but also to pickup a map of the park, along with other information and history surrounding this part of Utah.

Are you visiting multiple national parks in the next year? The America the Beautiful National Park Pass gets you into 400+ national park sites, including all 63 national parks, for 12 months!

Things to Do in Capitol Reef National Park

While hiking is undoubtedly the best way to explore Capitol Reef National Park, if you are short of time, the iconic self-guided driving tours will likely be your best option to experience the inherent beauty of this natural landscape. We will cover two of our favorites but dependent on which direction you enter this park will likely determine if some of the other options are feasible.

capitol reef national park

Capitol Gorge Scenic Drive

Let’s start with the most iconic drive in Capitol Reef National Park – the Capitol Gorge Scenic Drive. Just a couple of miles from the visitor center, this drive is perhaps the most spectacular experiences at Capitol Reef. Visitors should allocate anywhere from 1 hour to a half-day to explore everything there is to see along this route.

capitol gorge scenic drive

The drive itself can be challenging dependent on weather conditions, as there are numerous low-spots where water passes across the road and it may be beneficial to have an AWD vehicle to ensure you are able to navigate this route without any issues.

This 8-mile scenic drive offers breathtaking panoramic landscapes of the Fruita District and beyond. There are numerous spots where you will likely want to pull over to capture a few pictures, while the end of the drive offers the short Capitol Gorge road which is another 2 miles and well worth heading off the beaten path to experience this route.

capitol reef national park

The dirt road is a little less forgiving than the main route, and there are several blind spots where you are passing through the gorge with very little space to maneuver, especially if you meet any oncoming traffic that is heading out of the gorge. However, this is an unforgettable experience with breathtaking scenery and definitely something that creates a magical memory from your visit to Capitol Reef.

Highway 24 Scenic Drive

Visitors arriving at Capitol Reef National Park from Salt Lake City, Moab, or other northern locations will first experience the beauty of this natural landscape via Highway 24. This scenic drive offers epic views of the rugged Waterpocket Fold and follows a 25-mile journey into the heart of this national park, starting out at Chimney Rock and passing through the orchards and historic buildings at the ghost town of Fruita.

highway 24 scenic drive

A trail behind the rather unique schoolhouse leads to a petroglyph panel, then continues on to Hickman Natural Bridge and the Fremont Indian ruins. Throughout this journey, you cannot help but admire the scenery that you are passing through, again reiterating the beauty of Utah’s natural landscape unlike anywhere else in the world.

highway 24 scenic drive capitol reef

Along Highway 24, visitors can enjoy several iconic attractions and viewpoints, including but not limited to, Panorama Point, Goosenecks Overlook, and Sunset Point. The journey along Highway 24 also offers a glimpse of Capitol Reef National Park without any sign of an entrance station, even when you are passing through the iconic park sign.

capitol reef national park

For those who may want to just drive this stretch and tour the park for free (though to reiterate you cannot afford to miss the Capitol Gorge Scenic Drive!), you won’t want to miss this drive.

Capitol Reef Hiking Trails

While the aforementioned scenic drives offer visitors an opportunity to see many of the highlights throughout this national park, it’s when you get out on foot that you are able to see the real beauty here. Some of the best trails include the following, each of which offers epic viewpoints and a more in-depth experience at Capitol Reef.

capitol reef national park

The incredible view from Panorama Point is a short walk from the road along Highway 24. Located 2.5 miles west of the visitor center on the south side of Highway 24, Panorama Point offers views across Capitol Reef, the distant Henry Mountains to the east, and towering Boulder Mountain to the west.

South of Panorama Point are the Goosenecks of Sulphur Creek, offering equally spectacular views across this iconic landscape. The canyon walls display a myriad of colors and the short walk from the gravel road leads to the Goosenecks Overlook which towers above the rim 6,400 feet into the creek below.

Another easy hike for visitors is Sunset Point. Panoramic views of the Fremont River gorge, the Capitol Reef cliffs, and the distant Henry Mountains can all be experienced here, and just as the name of the overlook sounds, this is the perfect place to experience breathtaking sunsets. From the Goosenecks Overlook parking area, it’s a short 0.3-mile hike across the slick rock to Sunset Point.

Enjoy an Evening in Moab

After exploring Capitol Reef National Park, head back along Highway 24 in the direction of I-70 to venture east towards Moab. Dependent on how you plan your trip to Capitol Reef, you may have time to visit Arches National Park before spending the evening in Moab. There are several iconic attractions in Arches National Park that are close to the entrance, and certainly worthwhile visiting even if you only have a couple of hours daylight.

park avenue arches national park

The Park Avenue viewpoint is one of the most incredible sights as the sun is setting, and definitely one of our favorite landscapes in any national park across the US. The Windows are another attraction which are a great spot to visit late in the day, with a short hike from the road offering epic views of these geological formations.

the windows arches national park

Perhaps you prefer to arrive in Moab and simply enjoy a relaxing evening in the heart of the downtown area, grabbing dinner at one of the many local restaurants here (Fiesta Mexicana is one of our favorite spots, especially if you enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine) before planning your visit the following day to either Arches or Canyonlands National Parks, both of which are easily accessible from downtown Moab.

arches national park

Stay at Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton to enjoy views of Moab’s red rocks and a short 10-minute drive from the entrance to Arches. Whether you choose to stay here, or other accommodation option in the area, you will have plenty to experience in Moab.

Summary

Capitol Reef’s location in Utah makes this the perfect national park to visit in conjunction with a visit to nearby Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. While it may seem like a stretch to explore more than one national park in a day (or even a weekend), the location of Capitol Reef means that you can explore the scenic drives, a couple of the shorter hiking trails, and still have time to capture an epic sunset at Arches National Park.

arches national park

Regardless of whether you choose to spend a full day at Capitol Reef and then drive to Moab to spend the night, or try to explore some of the iconic landmarks in Capitol Reef and Arches during the same day, we hope that this post will inspire you to at least add both national parks to your itinerary. There is a reason why Utah’s collection of national parks are recognized as the “Mighty 5”, and you will not leave any of them disappointed that you visited!
