Dream Destinations – Finland

Gorgeous landscapes, historic buildings and a variety of attractions are all aspects of the Scandinavian country of Finland that attract millions of visitors each year. I can’t specifically pinpoint one reason why I am so attracted to Scandinavia but there is something about this part of the world that just entices me there every time I read something related to one of the Nordic countries.

Here are some of the most appealing reasons for visiting “Suomi”, the Finnish name for Finland.

Suomenlinna

Suomenlinna

A world renowned heritage site, Suomenlinna is a maritime fortress located off the coast of Helsinki, Finland’s capital. Work began on the construction of this masterpiece in the mid-18th century and was originally developed as a fortress,  but nowadays is actually a district of Helsinki permanently housing around 800 residents.

National Museum of Finland

FinlandNationalMuseum

Finland’s National Museum houses a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions that attract visitors from all around the world. Predominantly focused on Finnish history and ancestry, these exhibitions include such artifacts such as coins, medals and weapons in addition to archaeologically derived items. Finland prior to industrialization is displayed in several displays but possibly the most intriguing are the exhibits prior to the Ice Age.

Nuuksio National Park

Nuuksio

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, a beautiful part of rural Finland can be found in the Nuuksio National Park. Activities such as cross-country trekking, nature trails and ski cross-country are all available within this beautiful park and is certainly a great way to relax for a few days before heading on to explore more populated regions.

Sibelius Monument

Dedicated to Finland’s famous composer, Jean Sibelius, ‘The Sibelius Monument‘ is located inside the confines of a park within the central area of Helsinki. Consisting of a series of more than 600 hollow, steel pipes, this piece of abstract art uniquely identifies Sibelius’ work as a prominent feature in Finland’s history.

Turku Castle

Turku Castle is a cultural and historical tourist attraction that is over 700 years old. It is one of the oldest living buildings still in use throughout Finland. One of the most visited museum’s throughout the country, it is undoubtedly an attraction worth exploring to learn more about Finland’s historic past.

Dream Destinations – Egypt

There are certain parts of Africa that are particularly appealing and in terms of North African locations, Egypt is near the top of this list for many reasons. Packed full of history and amazing stories, it is no wonder that this country plays hosts to tourists from all parts of the world.

What is it about Egypt that makes it so attractive? Whether you are interested in learning more about the ancient Pyramids or taking a relaxing cruise along the River Nile, I have to say that this country seems to have it all. A word of caution though is that you are probably better picking the time of year you visit here unless you want to experience the sweltering heat associated with the African wilderness.

It’s difficult to pick a selection of attractions/locations worth visiting in Egypt but here are my top 5 that are ‘must-sees’.

Pyramids of Giza

All Giza Pyramids

What better way to start your exploration of Egypt than by visiting one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World – the Great Pyramid of Giza. I can only imagine how cool of an experience it would to see both the pyramid from the outside and also inside the chambers that make up the pyramid structure. Steeped with inspirational architecture dating back thousands of year, this is surely one of the most famous pieces anywhere in the world.

River Nile Cruise

Nile_Cruise

I have still never taken a cruise anywhere and of course we all associate these with Mexican or Caribbean cruises, but I would suggest that taking a cruise down the River Nile may well top both of these options. Relaxing on a cruise liner that wanders down the longest river in the world, passing by some amazing sights and scenery along the way sounds a pretty cool experience to me. There are a number of different cruise options available with different attractions available so dependent on what you would like to explore may well determine which option is best for you.

Mount Sinai

Mount_Sinai_Egypt

Set in the heart of a relatively barren landscape, Mount Sinai captures so many visitors and so much discussion not because of its size or appearance but because of it’s religious history that relates this directly to where Moses received the Ten Commandments. It’s one of those spots around the world that has so much sentimental value attached to it that everyone feels enticed to explore this region.

Valley of the Kings

Valley_of_Kings

If you are interested in continuing the theme of exploring more history, the Valley of Kings plays host to a number of tombs that once were used for pharaohs, the leaders of the ancient world. If you purchase an additional permit, you can take some high quality images (minus flash photography of course) of inside the tombs.

Great Sphinx of Giza

Another of the infamous landmarks in Egypt is the Great Sphinx of Giza which stands proudly on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the River Nile. It’s interesting when looking at recent pictures of the Sphinx just how battered and worn this is. I think this adds much natural history to these types of attractions rather than restoring them which understandably has to be done in certain instances but trying to maintain the originality is key here.

Dream Destinations – Denmark

Intrigued by all Scandinavian countries, Denmark is certainly near the top of European countries I would love to explore further. Separated by the Baltic Sea, Denmark is geographically located in close proximity to both Sweden and Norway offering a perfect destination to travelers wishing to visit the whole peninsula.

There is so much history in this part of the world, much of which is related to the Viking Age in the early centuries. The architecture and infrastructure throughout Denmark is particularly appealing so it’s no surprise that many of the following top 5 locations are related to this very theme.

Tivoli Gardens

Tivoligardens

Tivoli Gardens located in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, offers visitors a myriad of attractions including theme park rides, relaxing botanical gardens and fine restaurant options. This is the second oldest amusement park in the world so clearly has much history packed into this area.

Aarhus

Can you imagine grabbing a bicycle and just riding around a beautiful, historic city taking in all the wonderful sights and maybe stopping at a local cafe for a latte? This is exactly the sort of thing you can do in the second largest city of Denmark, Aarhus. Also a seaport on the eastern coast of Denmark, Aarhus offers visitors plenty of options for exploring true Danish culture and heritage.

Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Slot

Rosenborg Castle is a gorgeous castle dating back to the start of the 17th Century. A royal residence in its early days, this castle is now available for daily guided tours around the grounds.

The Little Mermaid

littlemermaid

At Langelinje Pier, Copenhagen you will find one of Denmark’s most famous tourist attractions – the sculpture of The Little Mermaid. Designed under the influence of the famous fairy tale, this sculpture has recently celebrated it’s 100th anniversary and continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Strøget

Strøget

Strøget is one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets with a wealth of shops, from budget-friendly chains to some of the world’s most lucrative designer brands. Located in the heart of Copenhagen this is certainly somewhere you can spend some time and probably see your cash dwindle away in these attractive Danish stores.

Dream Destinations – Croatia

Over the last few months we have been delighted to get to know several new travel bloggers around the world, in particular a couple of great folks from the beautiful nation of Croatia. Reading their blogs and following them on social media really inspired me to look into this country further and I can honestly say that I can’t wait to visit here to sample some of the amazing sights and delicacies that Croatia offers.

After following Chasing the Donkey and Frank about Croatiahere are my top 5 locations that I would love to explore for myself.

Istria

Sampling Croatian wine, relaxing along gorgeous stretches of beach and exploring some local historic architecture are all possible in the Croatian county of Istria. I started with this part of Croatia as it is located on the western coastline and also offers visitors the opportunity to take a ferry across to Venice from the town of Rovinj.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik

The beautiful town of Dubrovnik is appealing for many reasons, none more so than seeing the towering Franjo Tuđman Bridge (I love seeing modern piece of infrastructure). Aside from this, exploring the ‘Old Town’ and then being able to walk the walls of an official UNESCO site are all great reasons for visiting this part of Croatia.

Zagreb

Zagreb

I think it’s natural that whenever you visit a new country, you are likely going to want to visit the capital and Croatia is no different. Zagreb has plenty to offer but the most interesting aspect to me is seeing all of the archaic buildings and architecture throughout the city. Even the hotels such as the Regent Esplanade Zagreb are impressive structures and clearly packed full of history!

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice_Lakes_National_Park

Moving away from the urban Croatian settings into Plitvice Lakes National Park, the above picture pretty much says it all! Talk about utter beauty and bliss – this is a national park that I want to explore! The water looks crystal clear and add to this a plethora of scenic waterfalls and you have a great spot for relaxing before heading back to the hustle and bustle of exploring urban Croatia.

Hvar

Hvar

As you are leaving Croatia the beautiful island of Hvar located in the Adriatic Sea offers gorgeous scenery away from the mainland.
