Golf in Gulf Shores – Enjoy the Best Courses on the Gulf

4

When you have a passion for something, it’s incredibly difficult to stop enjoying it, regardless of how often you actually get to experience it. That’s exactly how I feel about golf and although the frequency I get to the golf course is much less than when I played collegiate golf, I still want to embrace this experience. We recently started a brand new section on our website dedicated to sharing how golf and travel go hand in hand and what better place to start our features than by highlighting why golf in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama is a hidden golfing gem that should be on every golfer’s radar.

Both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are home to a number of awesome golf courses, all of which will challenge and intrigue every standard of golfer. Here is an updated list of courses at the time of publication, each of which will be covered in more detail below, highlighting why you should consider a round at each one during your next visit to the Gulf Coast.

  • Kiva Dunes Golf Course
  • Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club
  • Craft Farms Golf Club

Kiva Dunes Golf Course

When you visit a golf course like Kiva Dunes and you hear about its reputation as being the number one course in Alabama and also the seventeenth best course in the nation as per Golf Advisor, you know you are visiting a pretty special place. I have been fortunate to play Kiva Dunes twice and each time was unique offering a distinctive challenge that makes me want to keep returning.

kiva dunes golf course alabama

Perhaps the highlight at Kiva Dunes is the overall design in terms of the challenging layout combined with the pristine condition that this course is always in. It’s a real credit to the local green keepers that constantly keep this links in such amazing condition all year round.

kiva dunes alabama

One of the benefits of playing golf at any course in Gulf Shores is that the climate allows golf all year round. If you don’t mind the chillier conditions in winter months, you can enjoy courses in quality condition and Kiva Dunes certainly epitomizes this.

But it’s when the spring season comes around that this course really begins to flourish and golfers from all corners of the globe can head to the Gulf and enjoy this amazing design by former PGA Tour professional Jerry Pate and Jim “Scrappy” Edgemon. Each hole offers a distinctive look and challenge but if you plot your way around the course, there is definitely an opportunity to post a good score.

kiva dunes golf alabama

By the time you reach the 17th hole, even if you have a good scorecard in hand, this next hole can easily make or break your round. If you are familiar with iconic golfing holes around the world, think about the 17th at TPC Sawgrass and the island green. Although the 17th at Kiva Dunes isn’t quite an island as there is plenty of space to the right, the tee shot is incredibly daunting especially if you are playing from the back tees.

golf in gulf shores and orange beach alabama

Golf has long been recognized as an “elitist” sport, primarily because of the cost associated with playing this, ranging from the price of clubs to the frequently high dollar green fees. The beauty of Kiva Dunes is that it can be a very affordable experience for every standard of golfer. Whether you have your own clubs with you or prefer to rent either Titleist or Nike branded clubs, your experience at Kiva Dunes will be catered for.

golf in gulf shores

But perhaps the real reason why Kiva Dunes is affordable is because of the dynamic pricing which I LOVE and think that every golf course should implement. The demand for tee times determines the pricing. The quieter the course, the cheaper the fees will generally be.

Dynamic Pricing gives you the flexibility to choose the right day, at the right time, at the right price.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone because you can enjoy one of the best courses in the United States for a portion of the price it would cost to play one of the infamous courses that you may be considering playing.

Peninsula is more about the overall experience though beyond the golf course. Sure, you will have a great time playing any of the 27 holes but there is so much more to experience at this “resort” style club. Head over to the tennis courts to test your skills before heading inside the recently renovated clubhouse to sample fine cuisine and a few drinks at the 19th hole.

Craft Farms Golf Club

Are you ready to visit a course designed by the King himself? That’s right, it’s not Elvis but it’s the “King of Golf”, Arnold Palmer. When Palmer first set foot in Gulf Shores, he immediately decided to design and build his signature courses at Craft Farms Golf Club.

Be enthralled by the quiet whisper of the wind through trees, the gentle murmur of Cotton Creek, and the rich smell of the earth. (Craft Farms Golf Club)

Visit Craft Farms Golf Club to sample 36 amazing holes, all of which were designed by Palmer himself. These are the only two courses in the state of Alabama that can lay claim to being designed by one of the greatest golfers to have played this game.

The two distinctive courses that visitors of all skill levels can enjoy are Cotton Creek and Cypress Bend. Both courses will test you but will also reward you when you hit quality shots. The immaculate condition is a real credit to those that take care of the links and definitely would make Palmer proud as he looks over this awesome golfing complex.

When Palmer designed Craft Farms, he likely realized that he was designing a real hidden gem, primarily because of it’s location along the Gulf Coast. Frequently left in the shadow of many of his other iconic designs, Craft Farms is a golfing haven that deserves to be on every golfers “must play” list…I know it’s certainly on mine!

Gulf Shores Golf Club

When you pull into the grounds at Gulf Shores Golf Club, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in New Orleans or similar location given the plantation style clubhouse that immediately captures your attention. Although this elegant and stylish clubhouse may intrigue you to head inside and enjoy the 19th hole experience before hitting the course, the moment you step on the first tee you will realize that the course is equally spectacular.

For the golf enthusiasts out there, you will be impressed to hear that Gulf Shores Golf Club is frequently ranked among the best in Alabama and with a history dating back to the 1960’s when the renowned father-son team of Jay and Carter Morrish designed this course, it’s no surprise that this historic venue is a popular spot for all golfers.

Squirrels, raccoons, and alligators are just a few of the typical residents. (Gulf Shores Golf Club)

A plethora of wildlife can be found residing around the course and with a number of water features, distinctive doglegs and strategic placement of bunkers, Gulf Shores Golf Club is certainly a rewarding experience for every standard that steps on to the first tee.

Foley Golf Club

You may think that heading away from the Gulf Coast will leave you with less spectacular golf courses but just a short drive from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the town of Foley, home to Foley Golf Club. Also known as Gulf Links Golf Center, Foley GC is a relatively short yet challenging course.

With a par of 64, this short course is always in pristine condition and not only offers a great golf experience but also allows visitors to explore the gorgeous panoramic landscapes around the Foley area. An on-site driving range and practice putting green allows golfers the opportunity to practice before hitting their opening tee shot, hopefully down the middle of the fairway.

Regardless of how well you play at Foley GC, this is a unique experience unlike anything else along the Gulf Coast of Alabama. With an a plethora of short holes, you may think this is easy in comparison to some others in the region but don’t let the short yardage fool you…there are plenty of holes waiting to catch you out!

GlenLakes Golf Club

Head over to GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley to enjoy 27 spectacular holes, offering one of the best tests of golf anywhere along the Gulf Coast. The gorgeous 18-hole Vista Dunes course is one of the best in Alabama and designed by locals Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge.

The adjoining 9-hole “Lakes” course may not have the length of it’s longer counterpart but it certainly lives up to expectations with a myriad of challenging, shorter holes. The fairways on this course may be generously wide but don’t let that fool you because on six of the nine holes, the infamous “water hazards” come into play, hence the reason for the name “Lakes Course”.

Jekyll Island Resort – Enjoy 48 Hours on the Golden Isles

Jekyll Island…you could be forgiven for having no idea at all where this is located because honestly, I had never heard of this place until a few weeks ago! Located along the Atlantic Seaboard in the state of Georgia, Jekyll Island is a real gem of a find for anyone that loves history, architecture and natural beauty. That’s right, when you stay at Jekyll Island Resort, you can experience all of this and much more while enjoying an epic stay on this historic island.

jekyll island resort

As part of the collection of Golden Isles in the southern part of Georgia and north-eastern tip of Florida, Jekyll Island is perhaps the most historic with all of the iconic figures that have been associated with properties on this island. When you start learning about infamous names such as Pulitzer, Rockefeller, JP Morgan etc. that have all had “cottages” (more on these later) and were part of the “Club” you will quickly realize that Jekyll Island is a pretty historic location.

jekyll island club resort

Today, Jekyll Island has been transformed into a state park and is preserved and maintained as such, while keeping as much of the original architecture and layout from the original Jekyll Island “Club” era. We enjoyed an awesome 48 hours exploring Jekyll Island while staying at the luxurious Jekyll Island Club Resort. Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do during a weekend getaway on one of Georgia’s Golden Isles!

Stay at Jekyll Island Resort

When you visit Jekyll Island, if you are looking to enjoy the ultimate, authentic experience, there is no better place to stay than the Jekyll Island Club Resort!

jekyll island resort drive

The Jekyll Island Club Resort offers Victorian charm with modern conveniences in the center of the Historic District (jekyll Island Club Resort)

From the moment you drive through the toll plaza to gain entry to Jekyll Island, you will immediately be transformed into a historic landscape. Take the short drive along Riverview Drive passing by a number of ancient, yet spectacular cottages and arrive under the canopy at Jekyll Island Club Resort.

Your vacation of exploring Jekyll Island’s history and breathtaking natural scenery awaits but before all of that, enjoy a little “R and R” by taking advantage of the myriad of amenities available to all guests at the Resort.

jekyll island

After checking in, the concierge offers free valet service for your vehicle. That’s right, it’s FREE…so you should probably take advantage of it because there are not many places where this service is available.

Take the short stroll to your room, whether it be in the main Clubhouse as our room was, or in the nearby alternative buildings that are equally spectacular (Sans Souci, Crane Cottage, Cherokee or even the Ocean Club which is directly overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and only a short drive away).

Luxury Accommodation

Get ready to be whisked away back to the Victorian era when you enter the luxury suites at Jekyll Island Club Resort. We stayed on the fourth floor of the Clubhouse overlooking the front of the property (more on the croquet lawn later!) but our spacious suite epitomized everything there is to love about the Victorian style decor and archaic remnants that have been preserved to keep the look and feel of what life was like back in the 19th century.

Whether you upgrade your stay to a luxury suite/parlor or simply enjoy the standard guestroom accommodations, you can be sure that your stay will be relaxing, comfortable and immediately make you reminisce of life during the Victorian ages.

Perhaps the pièce de résistance that would make you want to book a stay in the luxury suite inside the Clubhouse are the balconies overlooking the croquet lawn.

A spacious area where you can relax and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings while indulging in a Caramel Macchiato or other espresso from the Pantry located on the main floor certainly justifies upgrading to this room.

Resort Amenities

For those of you that are intrigued by the thought of a relaxing getaway at Jekyll Island, you are definitely coming to the right place when you stay at the Club Resort. Throughout the grounds, there are a number of reasons to stay “on property” without ever having to leave and honestly, this place is almost like an all-inclusive resort but without the exorbitant costs of staying at one.

Adirondack chairs can be found scattered around the Resort though perhaps those directly in front of the croquet lawn are the most intriguing. That’s right, you can watch all the local croquet experts test their skills on this vintage lawn.

Another prime time location is on the main floor of the Clubhouse overlooking the courtyard that has a real Italian feel to it with the relaxing sound of the water trickling out of the fountain. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine from the bar or a sweet tea from the Pantry while reading all about the history of Jekyll Island.

If you are looking for a little adventure during your stay at the Club Resort, head over to Jekyll Wheels Bike Rentals, grab a bike and head out to explore the 20 miles of paved bike paths around the island. It is perhaps the best way to enjoy the real beauty of Jekyll Island and there is no better way to get a little exercise before enjoying the island’s local cuisine offerings.

Fine Dining or Affordable Lighter Fare

Throughout the main floor of the Clubhouse are a number of dining options. Whether you are ready to experience the Grand Dining Room for an amazing breakfast or dinner, or perhaps you prefer to opt for lighter fare inside the Pantry, there are plenty of options to satisfy everyone’s appetites and budget.

Before going any further though, let’s take a moment to consider the Grand Dining Room and after learning more about it, you may well be inspired to reserve a table for at least one meal inside this room. Renowned as a venue with both historic and social importance, it’s inside the Grand Dining Room that those infamous figures such as Pulitzer, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt would have gathered, mingled and performed many of their significant meetings.

Just a short walk across from the Clubhouse is The Wharf which is the perfect option for an evening of entertainment, delicious cuisine and breathtaking panoramic views across the river. Best Things to Do on Jekyll Island

If relaxing at the Club Resort or enjoying a bike ride around the island isn’t enough to satisfy your adventure on Jekyll Island, don’t worry, because there are plenty of other attractions and things to do that will keep you occupied. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites, each of which will cover the history, the beauty, the nature and the fun that Jekyll Island deserves to be associated with.

Historic Tram Tours

Ready to explore the historic district on Jekyll Island and learn all about the rich heritage associated with the “Club”? Head over to what was once the old infirmary and is now the Jekyll Island Museum and take a guided tram tour around the entire 240-acre historic district.

The Passport to the Century Tour is available daily at 11:00AM, 1:00PM and 3:00PM. The tour lasts around 90 minutes giving a full tour of the Jekyll Island historic district and is led by a knowledgeable Jekyll Island Association employee who will share all of the history associated with this area.

Entry into two of the cottages is included along with the Faith Chapel, though if you take the 3PM tour, this will be closed but you can always use your ticket for re-entry the next day.

Our tour saw us visit the beautiful Dubignon Cottage and wonderfully named Mistletoe Cottage. Both are gorgeous architectural structures and it’s a great way to learn about how individuals of such stature would have designed and decorated their homes during this era.

But perhaps the real enjoyment from this tour is being able to sit back and relax as you are slowly shown around this beautiful district with every iconic attraction highlighted. You will certainly leave this tour with a much better idea as to what life was like during the period when the Club was thriving on Jekyll Island.

Driftwood Beach

When it comes to natural beauty on Jekyll Island, there is no place more spectacular than the amazing Driftwood Beach located on the north end of the island.

driftwood beach jekyll island

With a plethora of beautiful driftwood and other foliage scattered along the beach, this area is unlike most other beaches that you are likely to visit. But there is something quite magical about this landscape and definitely a place you will find incredibly intriguing.

driftwood beach georgia

Try to pay a visit to Driftwood Beach at either sunrise or sunset…the photographs you can take will make this worthwhile! When you hear that Driftwood Beach is frequently voted as one of America’s ten most romantic beaches, after visiting the first time, you will soon realize why.

jekyll island driftwood beach

We spent a couple of hours wandering along the beach, taking in the breathtaking panoramic scenes, mingling with the various shapes and sizes of driftwood before enjoying the incredible sunset. This is a prime time location for engagement and senior pictures.

If you are looking for the ultimate “unique” beach destination for a wedding or just for a weekend getaway, Driftwood Beach is definitely one that should be on your radar.

Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Did you know that Jekyll Island was home to the incredible Georgia Sea Turtle Center? We didn’t either! But after having the opportunity to visit this
rehabilitation facility, we quickly realized just how amazing a job the folks that work here really do for the natural environment.

georgia sea turtle center

From sea turtles that are in need of care to a myriad of other wildlife, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the on-site museum while watching the nurses take care of those that are brought into the Sea Turtle Center. Learn all about the ecosystem that is perfect for sea turtles to thrive while watching the baby sea turtle being fed.

Sea turtles are an endangered species and the work that is carried out inside the Georgia Sea Turtle Center goes a long way to preserving and helping these turtles lead a long a healthy life back in the wild.

The admission fee alone is well worth it given that the proceeds go back into helping these sea turtles but you can also adopt your very own for a $50 donation.

Jekyll Island Golf Club

If you love golf as much as I do, heading over to Jekyll Island Golf Club and sampling the four amazing golf courses will be a no-brainer. Three 18 hole courses and a 9 hole shorter course are all available, each of which will test even the most skillful of players.

oleander golf course jekyll island

We had the privilege of playing the Oleander Course which is renowned as being the most distinct in terms of its design. The ocean breeze that frequently drifts across the course adds to the overall difficulty but it’s the pristine condition and challenging layout that makes this such an attractive course for visiting golfers.

jekyll island golf club

Regardless of the score you shoot when playing any of Jekyll Island’s courses, it’s having the opportunity to relax and play one of the finest courses in the Golden Isles that should justify adding some time in your itinerary to enjoy this.

jekyll island golf club

Summary

It’s always a pleasant surprise when you stumble across a new destination that leaves you wanting to return in the future and Jekyll Island certainly accomplished this. Prior to visiting, I have to admit that we had zero expectations and honestly no clue what our experience on one of the Golden Isles was going to be like. I can 100% attest that our experience was amazing.

jekyll island resort

From the gorgeous Jekyll Island Club Resort where we stayed to the diverse variety of attractions available across the small island. It may only take a short time to get around the island but it certainly packs a lot into a small space.

jekyll island georgia

We look forward to returning to Jekyll Island in the near future and hopefully have inspired you to add this to your bucket list. If nothing else, paying a trip to the amazing Sea Turtle Center or the breathtaking landscapes on Driftwood Beach should be enough to warrant a visit…but folks, don’t forget, can you resist the temptation of testing your skills on the croquet lawn and becoming part of “The Club”?

Spring Break in Alabama Itinerary

Spring Break in Alabama for us is all about Gulf Shores and Orange Beach (GSOB). We have visited Huntsville which is definitely a great option for those looking for a little more history, culture and adventure but in terms of the ultimate relaxing getaway, there is no other place quite like GSOB.

spring in alabama

The beauty of spending time on the Gulf Coast is that you can create a customized itinerary solely dependent on the amount of time you choose to stay. For us, we tend to take “long weekend” getaways to really maximize our vacation time but we also appreciate that many prefer to take a couple of longer trips and Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is also a great place to stay for a week.

spring in gulf shores and orange beach

Having visited on multiple occasions, we can 100% attest that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach has a truly relaxing vibe to it. You don’t need to worry about thousands of tourists as you do at Disney World in Orlando, nor do you need to be concerned about traffic being crazy. The more time you spend in GSOB, the more “relaxation” or “beach time” you can incorporate into your itinerary.

Here is a quick breakdown of things we experienced during a 4 day getaway:

  • Stay at Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts (experience luxury amenities)
  • 32 Miles of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico (plenty of beach time!)

The moment I opened the door to our suite on the 16th floor, I was literally gobsmacked! But the pièce de résistance is when you open those french doors on to the balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The question is, what are you going to be amazed by the most?

The incredible view of the Gulf, the breathtaking sight of 32 miles of pristine, white sandy beaches or maybe the balcony itself…that’s right, this balcony is massive including a grill, table and chairs and oh yes, the small added bonus of a hot tub!

Here are a couple of our favorites that we think you should consider, regardless of your interest level in either activity.

Hit the Golf Links at Kiva Dunes

When it comes to relaxing activities, golf is at the very top of my list but obviously I am a little biased. The beauty of playing golf in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is that there is an experience out there for every standard, regardless of how serious you take it.

Kiva Dunes epitomizes everything there is to love about golf along the Alabama coastline. Voted the number one course in the state of Alabama and #19 in the nation, according to Golf Advisor, Kiva Dunes is an incredible landscape with breathtaking natural vistas, an abundance of wildlife and of course, a golf course that will test every skill level.

One of the best reasons why we love Kiva Dunes so much, aside from the quality of course, is the dynamic pricing feature that they have built into their tee time scheduling. Dependent on how busy the course is each day and what day of the week you are visiting, will determine the price you can expect to pay.

gulf shores outdoors

As you meander your way through the secluded environment, you cannot help but fall in love with the pristine conservation area that surrounds you. Always be aware of your surroundings because you never know when an alligator may be relaxing on the banks of the lake…alternatively, just be sure to keep your ball on the short grass rather than venturing into the depths of the unknown!

The signature 17th hole is one of the most spectacular holes I have played. If you are daring enough to play from the very back tees, this is one of the most intimidating tee shots in golf. Measuring 215 yards, the illusion of an island green is apparent and although you can bale out your tee shot to the right, the temptation to hit the shot of a lifetime and go directly over the water will likely be there…it’s the ultimate risk-reward tee shot for sure!

Ride Bikes around the Backcountry Trails

If the thought of spending four hours on a golf course is a little too much, why not get your exercise by visiting the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex.

With more than 25 miles of trails to be explored, this is the perfect area to enjoy the outdoor environment and stumble across a myriad of wildlife on your adventure. From alligators to local bird species, you never quite know what awaits as you turn a corner.

Our adventure started on Perdido Beach Highway in Orange Beach at Beach Bike Rentals. For only $25, you can enjoy these trails all day on a comfortable, three-speed cruising bike. Tandems, trikes and other bike options are available but once you have your bike with accompanying basket and lock, you are ready to hit the trails and start exploring.

As you wander through Alabama Beaches’ backcountry, you will find that these are a popular set of trails for locals and visitors alike. Full of walkers and bikers, these trails are the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors while burning those extra calories. Follow the map to find your perfect route or simply allow spontaneity to take over and see where the trails take you.

After visiting Orange Beach for the first time several years ago, a relatively new addition is the new boardwalk that crosses the lake and this is bike-friendly offering gorgeous views across the natural habitat for a plethora of wildlife.

Retro Dining 1950s Style

For those of you that golfed and biked your way around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, get ready to recuperate some of those calories by visiting an awesome 1950s inspired diner in the heart of Gulf Shores. The “Sunliner Diner” turns back the clock to the 1950s era by introducing visitors to this trendy “diner” experience where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or even just a milkshake at the bar.

In our opinion, the best time to visit the Sunliner Diner is for breakfast. Please don’t start counting your calories when you visit here because this food is delicious. You may find that you want to visit here and then hit the Backcountry Trails and burn a few extra calories but first, it’s all about enjoying breakfast 1950s style.

The infamous “Sunliner Biscuit” is a great choice and each of the biscuit sandwiches is served with sweet Vidalia onion hash browns. Heather opted for the Country Chicken Biscuit, featuring country fried chicken, a farm fresh fried egg and sausage gravy. Ask for it a little extra spicy, you won’t regret it!

In my opinion, the ultimate breakfast experience at Sunliner Diner is the “Breakfast Banana Split”…a “healthy” (coughs!) combination of crushed pineapple, strawberries and banana with whipped cream, pecans and a cherry, all on top of three waffles and drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce.

Don’t worry, there is plenty of food here for two or three people! Get ready to have some folks gaze over to your table because it’s a pretty impressive sight when the waiter brings over this concoction.

Rather than inundating you with recommendations on where to eat in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we wanted to focus our attention solely on Sunliner Diner just because we think it’s such a cool place.

Summary

Visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is always a good idea in our opinion, regardless of the time of year you choose to visit. But during the spring season, you can experience everything there is to love about this stretch of Alabama coastline without having to worry about the searing summer temperatures.

spring break in gulf shores and orange beach

Although visitors to GSOB have plenty of accommodation options, in our opinion, Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts is a no-brainer. It epitomizes everything there is to love about a luxury resort and definitely emphasizes the “you get what you pay for” philosophy. Sure, it’s not the cheapest place to stay but when you stay here, you realize that your money is well spent and you will likely be raring to book a return trip.

gulf shores and orange beach spring getaway

We have found that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a great place for a long weekend getaway because there are so many customized itineraries that you can put together, dependent on personal interest. We focused on golfing, biking and relaxing at Turquoise Place during this trip but if you love arts/culture, sailing, extreme adventure sports and the “foodie” scene, GSOB has a little bit of everything to satisfy your needs.

And this folks is why we #ChooseSpectrum every time we plan a spring trip to Alabama!

There is nothing quite like taking in deep breaths of fresh air while exploring a beautiful natural landscape. The UK is spoiled for choice when it comes to breathtaking natural environments but we would argue that the island of Jersey, in the heart of the Channel Islands, has some of the finest walking trails in the country. Whether you are an avid hiker or consider yourself to be a novice, walking in Jersey is an experience that you will quickly fall in love with.

walking in jersey

Regardless of the weather conditions, putting on your favorite walking shoes and experiencing off the beaten path hiking trails is an unbelievably rewarding experience, particularly if you are visiting a destination that is blessed to have a myriad of untouched natural landmarks. This is exactly how we felt during our trip to the Channel Islands when we spent a few days exploring Jersey.

When it comes to the best things to do in Jersey, heading outdoors is undoubtedly the best way to experience the true beauty on this island.

Walking in Jersey, Channel Islands

From walking along the promenade in St. Helier to the gorgeous breakwater at St. Catherine’s Bay, Jersey is inundated with man-made paths that will encourage almost every type of traveler to explore the island on foot. At the other end of the spectrum, Jersey is proud of the plethora of natural walkways that will leave those with a little more adventure plenty of inspiration to explore these hidden gems.

Measuring only nine miles wide by five miles, the diverse Jersey terrain offers challenging routes for every style of hiker. With over 48 miles of coastal paths to enjoy, there is certainly no shortage of options for all travelers.

If you are planning on visiting Jersey with every intention of enjoying the great outdoors, you are definitely taking a trip to the right location.

From coastlines carpeted with gorse and wildflowers, to peaceful wooded valleys, quiet tree-lined lanes, reservoir walks and rugged beach trails (Visit Jersey)

Let’s take a look at all four corners of the island, because let’s face it, if you are planning a visit to the Channel Island and looking for the best things to do in Jersey in winter or summer, you can be sure that you won’t have to travel far given the size of this island. But remember, don’t let the size fool you because there is A LOT to see and experience in Jersey!

Jersey’s East Coast – Walking in Gorey

Rather than starting in the typical heartbeat of Jersey, St. Helier, take the short drive over to the east coast to the idyllic village of Gorey and explore this gorgeous area.

Whether you are an avid historian or simply want to enjoy the picturesque scenery, our recommendation is to take advantage of the free parking lot a little outside of the village and then walk along the coast back towards the center.

The views across the English Channel are spectacular but your eyes will frequently be amazed by the waves crashing against the shoreline and the blissful sight of the harbor with a collection of vessels that are ready to hit the open waters to find the catch of the day.

But don’t think that your walking excursion is over when you reach Gorey because there is plenty more for those looking to enjoy a little more strenuous activity. Grab a bite to eat in the village before hiking to the summit of Mont Orgueil Castle.

The views overlooking the fishing port are incredible and when you reach the summit and admire a scene that has been present for over 800 years, you quickly realize just how incredible this part of the island really is.

Walk the North Coastline

If you are ready for a little more adventure outside of anything that resembles civilization, we recommend heading to the north coast of Jersey to experience the epic landscapes. The plethora of steep cliffs, rugged coastline, hidden bays and untouched natural beauty ensures that the north coast is a real gem for those looking to capture amazing memories while walking this part of the island.

The perfect place to start your adventure on the north coast is by the ancient ruins of Grosnez Castle, located in the north-west corner of the island. This 14th-century ruined castle is well worth visiting to capture a piece of Jersey history but the real beauty here can be found as you start strolling along the coastal paths.

Be careful as the wind can get pretty blustery here but this is part of the ultimate experience as you enjoy scenery unlike anywhere else on the island. For those of you that have experienced the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, this has a very similar feel but unique enough to ensure visitors will love both!

jersey coastal paths

Walk along the cliff path all the way to Plemont Bay. The views overlooking this bay are spectacular as you approach an area with toilets and a cafe. On a clear day, you will have the opportunity to peer across the English Channel and admire the coastline of France.

After enjoying a light snack in Plemont Bay, continue your journey to enjoy Jersey’s piece de resistance – the gorgeous beach at Grève de Lecq. When you arrive at this beach, take the downhill walk to the beach and immediately feel like you are relaxing on the French Riviera. This is one of Jersey’s most popular beaches during the summer months but regardless of the time of year you visit, it’s a breathtaking landmark on the island.

West Coast – La Corbière

If you don’t mind experiencing the wild elements that frequently hit the Jersey coastlines, particularly during the winter months, head over to the south-west coast and take a hike along the path towards La Corbière lighthouse.

In term of wild, rugged coastlines, there is nothing quite like St. Ouen’s Bay on a blustery winter’s day. One thing is for sure, you will earn quite the appetite after spending a couple of hours strolling along this spectacular coastal trail.

walk jersey

You will certainly be ready to sample some of the best restaurants in St. Helier on your return, or perhaps a local coffee shop such as Locke’s Coffee & Grub to warm up your insides.

As you head towards La Corbière lighthouse, you will quickly realize why this is one of the most photographed landmarks on the island of Jersey. Spend some time admiring the waves crashing against the rocks and appreciate how nature plays such an integral role in shaping the natural environment we cannot help but appreciate.

The really adventurous hikers will take the coastal path all the way from La Corbière up to the north-west corner that we referenced earlier and Grosnez Castle.

At around 12-13 km, this will likely take anywhere from 3-4 hours but perhaps allocate a couple more hours to really enjoy the experience as you will be stopping several times to snap a few photographs of the idyllic landscapes around you.

Explore the South – St. Helier Walking Trails

When you think about Jersey, you could be forgiven for immediately thinking about the main town on the island, St. Helier (that’s if you had any idea about Jersey at all!). So, it would be remiss of us to write a post about the best walking trails on the island without mentioning the real heart and soul of this island.

st helier jersey

It goes without saying, there are plenty of amazing restaurant, coffee shops, attractions and historic landmarks to be found in St. Helier but for those of you that have no interest in retail therapy and simply want to enjoy the outdoors, there is plenty of walking to be found in this town that will lead to a myriad of amazing sights.

st helier waterfront

Take a stroll along the harbor front and admire the views across the bay to Elizabeth Castle. Be sure to check out the collection of vessels that are docked and let us know if for a few seconds you thought you were in Monte Carlo with the plethora of ritzy looking boats.

st helier walking trails

Continue walking and you will eventually arrive in the village of St. Aubin. Many locals opt to use a bicycle to make this trip but we would argue that your own two feet are just as accustomed to taking this gentle stroll between the two locations.

st helier walking

If you are interested in heading inland away from the coast, there are plenty of options available that will leave you intrigued and wanting more. For example, Les Jardins de la Mer loop starts at the Waterfront harbor area in St. Helier and as you head west, you will climb the pedestrian path towards First Tower before rising above the town and passing through the valley of Vallée des Vaux.

Summary

Jersey may not be the first place you think about visiting for natural beauty but I am 100% convinced that after you visit the first time, you will be raring to book a return trip. The beauty of visiting this part of the Channel Islands is that you create an itinerary that has a blend of relaxation and adventure. With Jersey being so small, it’s easy to experience a little bit of both every day if you wish.

explore jersey on foot

Experiencing the best walking trails around Jersey will certainly open your eyes to a breathtaking natural landscape. If you are visiting in the heart of winter as we did, don’t let the weather stop you from exploring.

In fact, we would argue that you should embrace the conditions and hit those coastal paths to admire the rugged beauty that left us wanting so much more.
