Village Creek State Park, Arkansas – Enjoy an Amazing Day Trip

At almost 7000 acres of breathtaking landscape along Crowley’s Ridge in the heart of Northeast Arkansas, Village Creek State Park is a rural hidden gem that should be on everyone’s radar while planning a trip to the Natural State. While Arkansas may not be the first state you think about exploring, some of the lesser known gems are what makes this state such a worthwhile area to experience.

village creek state park entrance

Located only six miles south of Wynne, Village Creek State Park is located along one of Arkansas’ infamous ridges. For those visiting from out of state, it is approximately 100 miles north of Little Rock and less than one hour from our home town of Jonesboro. To reach the park, take Exit 242 off I-40 just east of Forrest City and travel 12 miles north on Highway 284; or travel six miles south on Highway 284 from the nearby town of Wynne.

Let’s start by adding a disclaimer. I have lived in Arkansas since 2008 and Heather has lived here all her life and neither of us previously visited Village Creek State Park until our recent day trip to this hidden gem. Whether this is because of location or simply a lack of knowledge that this state park exists, we are certainly glad we finally made the effort to head south and experience this gorgeous park.

Why Visit Village Creek State Park?

So, what makes Village Creek State Park so unique and worth heading to such a rural part of Arkansas? Given its location on Crowley’s Ridge, the moment you drive into the area you quickly realize that this park epitomizes all of the natural features of the “ridge” and it’s an awesome experience to see how these have been preserved and enhanced into a state park.

wynne arkansas railway line

Village Creek State Park is actually named for a stream that flows through the area, and while it is frequently recognized as a “natural” state park, it also preserves much of the rich history in this region.

village creek state park hiking trails

Dating back to the early 19th century when the Military Road linked Memphis, Tennessee with Little Rock, Arkansas, there is still a part of this road visible today in the heart of Village Creek State Park. More on this later, but this history alone creates a rather unique environment and certainly a lot of memories to be made as you learn all about the historical background of this area.

lake austell village creek state park

But perhaps the real reason that visitors are so intrigued by the beauty of Village Creek State Park is the myriad of hiking trails that can be experienced throughout the park, primarily around the perimeters of the two iconic lakes – Lake Dunn and Lake Austell. In conjunction with a 27-hole public golf course that meanders through the rolling hills of the ridge, along with horse stables, picnic tables, gift shop and more, Village Creek State Park has a plethora of attractions to keep all the family occupied on an epic day trip.

The History of Military Road

Let’s start at Lake Austell and perhaps the most intriguing hiking trail here which is the historic Military Road that connected Little Rock to Memphis. Upon completion in 1829, this road became a major route of Indian Choctaw, Chickasaw and Muscogee folks, but today it is one of the iconic hiking trails at Village Creek State Park. At just over 2 miles, this trail meanders through forestry with a myriad of wooden/metal bridges and is part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

military road trail village creek state park

Dependent on the time of year that you visit, be sure to be on the lookout for snakes (cottonmouth snakes are frequently seen throughout the wooded area) but aside from that, you can thoroughly enjoy a relaxing, quiet stroll along such a historic trail. There are several placards depicting the history of Military Road and these are well worth reading to learn more about your upcoming adventure.

trail of tears village creek state park

As you take the initial stroll along the banks of Lake Austell, you cannot help but admire the panoramic vistas across Crowley’s Ridge on one side and the picturesque lake on the other. If you visit later in the day, this is an epic spot to capture breathtaking sunset pictures that truly epitomize the natural beauty in this part of Arkansas.

military road trail

The trail comprises of two loops – Upper and Lower Loop. Regardless of which route you choose to take, you will end up in the same spot, it’s simply a matter of whether you prefer to learn about the history of the trail before or after the 2 mile trail.

Hiking Trails

While the Military Road Trail is perhaps the most popular, Village Creek State Park is home to 33 miles of distinctive trails, many of which are infrequently visited, so you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere without too many folks passing by. The Lake Dunn Trail, also measuring just under 3 miles in length, is equally spectacular and features a popular swinging bridge (although in 2021 this was temporarily inaccessible due to a tree falling and destroying it) along with connecting other multi-use trails that interconnect throughout this state park.

lake austell

For those looking to enjoy a slightly easier and shorter option, Austell Trail is a little over 1 mile in length and starts at the Visitor Center, ending at Lake Austell picnic area. This particular landscape offers unique hogback ridges and stream valleys, and while there are some moderately steep climbs, this relatively short trail is another great option for those that love the great outdoors. You can also access the Old Military Road Trail from this if you are looking to experience a variety of trails on the same visit.

village creek state park hiking trails

The shortest and easiest of all the trails at Village Creek State Park is Arboretum Trail. Measuring only a quarter of a mile, this is the perfect spot for all the family to enjoy a true nature walk while also experiencing many of the local area’s common trees and shrubs. It’s definitely a great trail to educate kids while also enjoying some exercise.

Lake Dunn and Lake Austell

The beauty throughout Village Creek State Park is apparent when you stand and admire the panoramic scenes across both Lake Dunn and Lake Austell.

lake dunn village creek arkansas

Regardless of whether you choose to explore both and enjoy hiking trails in and around these two bodies of water, a trip to this Arkansas State Park would not be the same without a visit to both lakes. If you have any interest in kayaking or fishing, both lakes are the perfect spot to get out on the water and enjoy the scenery and plethora of fish (you can find crappie, bass, bream among others in both lakes) that can be found here.

lake dunn

Lake Dunn is home to a bait shop and dock where fishing boat, kayaks, and pedal boats can be rented for a small fee. Visitors can head out and enjoy the scenery from on the water but for those that prefer to stay on dry land, the view from the boat dock at Lake Dunn is pretty incredible. We spent some time just peering out across the lake and listening to nothing but wildlife and the sound of water gently running on the nearby rocks.

lake dunn village creek state park

Lake Austell is equally beautiful, albeit slightly larger at 85 acres than its small counterpart that is only 65 acres in size. The old saying that “good things often come in small packages” is certainly true here and both lakes are frequently renowned as some of the best in the area for bass fishing.

Golf the Ridges at Village Creek

While most visitors to Village Creek will likely want to explore the park itself, for the avid golfers out there, this park is home to one of the finest courses in the Natural State. The Ridges at Village Creek is an Andy Dye-designed 27-hole championship golf course that offer three distinctive nine hole courses that meander through the rolling hills of Crowley’s Ridge.

ridges at village creek golf course

With water hazards coming into play on twelve holes, accuracy is paramount but you could easily be forgiven for being distracted with the panoramic views that you can enjoy throughout the course. This is definitely not a course for the faint hearted and it is certainly a true workout with the steep terrain a frequent challenge and a flat lie being a rarity. A gorgeous backdrop of hardwood forests is the perfect atmosphere for a true golfing experience that will challenge golfers of all standards.

Summary

Arkansas frequently falls under the radar of travelers but after visiting locations such as Mammoth Spring State Park and now Village Creek State Park, it’s fair to say that the Natural State is one that deserves to get more recognition. If you love being outdoors and experiencing easy to moderate hiking trails, Village Creek is a lightly trafficked state park that offers a plethora of awesome adventures and panoramic scenes.

Don’t forget to visit Lake Dunn or Lake Austell around sunset, and simply enjoy the relaxing solitude that is present throughout the near 7000 acres of Village Creek State Park.

A JOSHUA TREE IS A FORM OF A YUCCA THAT GROWS AS A TREE AND HAS CLUSTERS OF SPIKY LEAVES, NATIVE TO ARID REGIONS OF SOUTHWESTERN NORTH AMERICA.

Let’s take a look at why Joshua Tree should be on everyone’s radar when planning a trip around Southern California.

How to Get from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree

While Los Angeles will undoubtedly capture the attention of visitors flying into LAX, we are convinced that after reading this post you will be inspired to at least spend a few days away from city life and explore the beauty that Joshua Tree National Park offers. If you fly into LAX and get a rental car, the trip to Joshua Tree is a little over two hours dependent on traffic getting away from LA.

Whether you choose to take I-10 or California State Route 60, there are plenty of places to visit along this route if you need a little more retail therapy or perhaps want to grab a bite to eat before heading into one of California’s iconic national parks. From Pomona to Riverside and a plethora of smaller California towns, this route is full of distractions that could arguably take your focus away from getting to Joshua Tree as quickly as possible.

Where to Stay Around Joshua Tree

Visitors to Joshua Tree can certainly experience the natural beauty on offer during a day trip, similar to how we previously did during our first visit to this national park. However, if you want to truly appreciate the abundance of natural features and epic landscapes, you will likely want to spend a few days in and around the vicinity of the park.

Plenty of budget friendly and luxury accommodation options are available, ranging from local motel establishments to recognized hotel chains. After a long day hiking around the national park, you will be ready for a little relaxation and a bite to eat in the nearby town of Desert Hot Springs or even a little further afield in Indio.

Miracle Springs Resort and Spa offers the perfect spot to enjoy a late evening sunset while indulging in a few aperitifs before enjoying dinner in one of the many local establishments in Desert Hot Springs.

Hiking Trails Around Joshua Tree

With 794,000 acres intersecting the Mojave and Colorado deserts, it’s likely no surprise that there is a lot of landscape to explore and what better way to do this than by wearing your favorite hiking shoes and experiencing the collection of awesome trails.

IMPORTANT - Before highlighting some of the iconic spots worth visiting, it's worth remembering that Joshua Tree is like many other national parks and has an abundance of isolated, remote spots, so always be prepared with plenty of food, water and let folks know if you are heading out on a longer hike.

While the list of hiking trails is far longer than we will cover, here are some of the best areas to experience the true beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.

  • Ryan Mountain Trail
  • Warren Peak Trail
  • Hidden Valley Trail
  • Cholla Cactus Garden Trail
  • Skull Rock Trail

One of the most popular hikes in Joshua Tree is Ryan Mountain Trail. At approximately 3 miles in distance, this moderately difficult trail will take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours dependent on fitness levels and desire to take pictures along the route. Hikers are given the opportunity to rise to the summit of Ryan Mountain, where breathtaking panoramas across San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, and Pleasant Valleys await.

The Cholla Cactus Garden Trail is perhaps the most unique of the aforementioned recommendations. While it is only short at just over a quarter of a mile, this weird yet wonderful trail leads visitors through some of the most lethal cacti in this national park. They may be small but they certainly pack a punch and we highly recommend refraining from touching these!

cholla cactus trail

Skull Rock is one of the most iconic landmarks throughout Joshua Tree, primarily because it’s such a unique geological feature that epitomizes the shape of a skull. It is also one of the easiest for all visitors to be able to experience with a short trail leading to this landmark.

Scenic National Park Drive

There are three park entrances to Joshua Tree at the North, South and West entrance. Regardless of where you start your adventure, the drives through this national park are incredible and it won’t be long before you are spotting those iconic “Joshua” trees.

joshua tree drive

If you are not feeling energetic enough to experience some of those lengthy hikes, the beauty of Joshua Tree is that you can enjoy an equally spectacular experience by simply following the drive through the park. There are numerous spots where you will likely want to pull over and capture some of those infamous Joshua tree pictures but like many other national parks, this is one you can appreciate from the comfort of your vehicle.

Let’s take a look at some of the best weekend trip destinations in California.

Death Valley National Park

One of the best national parks to visit in California is Death Valley National Park. Death Valley is one of the hottest places on Earth. It holds the world record for the hottest temperature in the world; 134 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though it is blistering hot, it is a great place to explore especially if you stay at The Inn At Death Valley.

This national park is filled with phenomenal views and hikes. One of the most popular areas is Zabriskie Point. This a great place to experience the sunrise. The sun’s rays slowly creep up, and you can spot the colors and formations of Zabriskie Point. It is a magical time. Just note that you won’t be the only one there!

death valley national park

A hike near Zabriskie Point is Golden Canyon, Gower Gulch, and Badlands Loop Hike. It is one of the most popular hikes in the park, and for a good reason. The trail is filled with many spiderweb-like formations and colorful mountains with specs of blue, yellow, and pink. The views are astonishing. Just remember to bring some water with you.

Another great spot is the Badwater Basin. It is the lowest point in North America and stands at 282 feet below sea level. The basin is filled with salt, so all you see surrounding you is a vast white land with stunning mountains in the distance. It is an excellent spot for photography.

Death Valley is filled with so many unusual formations. It is one of the most impressive and unique national parks in California.

Joshua Tree National Park

While California is home to a variety of amazing cities that deservedly attract visitors from all across the globe, our love of USA national parks makes it easy for us to recommend one of California’s nine areas that have such a designation. While Yosemite is perhaps the most famous, we would argue that Joshua Tree National Park is equally spectacular and deserves to be on everyone’s radar.

joshua tree national park

Located in the heart of Southern California, Joshua Tree is a short two-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles and the perfect national park to experience for a weekend getaway. A scenic drive throughout Joshua Tree will allow you to capture a glimpse of the inherent beauty of this park, but perhaps the best way to truly appreciate the amazing landscapes is to experience a collection of the best hikes in Joshua Tree.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park may not get as much attention as the state’s other national parks, but its history of eruptions and hydrothermal activity that reminds visitors of the best of Yellowstone make it an exciting pick on any California trip.

Kick off your first day with a hike to the best viewpoint in the park: Lassen Peak. You’ll climb 2,000 feet of elevation over 5 miles roundtrip on this one, but the vistas are worth it. Pack a picnic lunch and good hiking shoes with some traction. If you’re not spent, head to Bumpass Hell, the scene of the park’s hydrothermal activity. Three miles of much easier hiking will get you to the boardwalks and that tell-tale sulphur smell.

lassen volcanic national park

Spend the morning of your second day hiking to Terrace, Shadow and Cliff Lakes on a 3.5-mile trek that you’ll have mostly to yourself. If you’re short on time, the second lake of the three, Shadow Lake, is the largest and most impressive. Follow that up with a drive to the park’s best scenic stops: Kings Creek Meadow, the Devastated Area, Lake Helen, Hat Creek and Manzanita Lake.

For your overnight stay, the only options in the park are the Drakesbad Guest Ranch and the park’s campgrounds. There are more options in the nearby towns of Shingletown (the closest), Chester or Burney. Local grocery shops will offer the best chance for meals, as the scenery is definitely the highlight here!

Monterey Peninsula

The Monterey Peninsula is one of the most popular weekend getaways in California, and with good reason. It features spectacular scenery, picturesque coastal towns, and lots to see and do, for kids and adults alike.

One of the best things to do in Monterey is to go on a whale watching tour. The Monterey Bay aquarium is a great place to get acquainted with the various ecosystems and creatures that live here.

On day two, start by visiting the historic (and beautiful!) Spanish mission in Carmel. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the museum holds many artifacts. Next, head to the charming village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, where you can stroll the streets to browse the many shops and galleries. In the afternoon, take a drive into bucolic Carmel Valley to tour vineyards and sip some local wines. Finish up your day with a stroll along the pristine beach in Carmel.

Pacific Grove has many historic inns that make a great base from which to explore the peninsula. And you will find quality eateries in all the towns here, many featuring farm-to-table cuisine or fresh-caught seafood.

Temecula

Temecula is the perfect California weekend getaway, especially for wine lovers. This Southern California wine region feels like a trip to Tuscany. You will find rolling vineyards, tall cedar trees lined on the ridges, and a fabulous selection of wineries in Temecula.

Wine tasting is definitely a must, when you visit Temecula. You can either explore on your own, or join an organized tour to take you from winery to winery. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is one of the most iconic National Parks in the USA, and it is packed with endless adventures. Whether you’re a hardcore adrenaline junkie looking for an epic time in the backcountry or you’re simply looking for a beautiful place to relax and unwind for a weekend getaway, you’re sure to find plenty of things to fill your time.

yosemite national park california

For iconic views, head to Tunnel View near the westside entrance where you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view over the Yosemite Valley. Glacier Point is another spectacular viewpoint that begs you to take lots of photos, as it is almost too beautiful to be real. Getting onto the trails and doing a hike or two is a great way to explore the park even further.

yosemite california

Taft Point and Bridalveil Falls are quick and easy trails that fit easily into a short visit. However, if you are looking to get off the beaten path and avoid the big crowds, you may consider a longer hike, like West Valley Loop Trail, or a strenuous but incredibly rewarding trek to Cloud’s Rest.

yosemite national park

The best way to truly experience Yosemite is to camp inside the park, however, be sure to make your reservation well in advance as the campgrounds fill up quickly. If you’re not into camping, there are lodges as well. Be sure to pack lots of snacks and some food that you can easily cook while camping, as the restaurants and stores inside the park tend to be overpriced and of low quality.

Mammoth Spring State Park – Enjoy Natural Beauty in Arkansas

6

Did you know that one of the world’s largest springs is located in Northern Arkansas? Mammoth Spring State Park may not be the first place you think about visiting to experience a natural wonder, but with over nine million gallons of water flowing every hour, this is definitely a part of the Natural State that you should consider visiting. While the city of Mammoth Spring has a population of less than 1000, visitors to this area should be focused solely on exploring the beauty of this state park. Small in size yet full of natural beauty makes this well worthy of a day trip or even a relaxing afternoon to enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.

Arkansas is frequently left in the shadow of even some of its neighboring states such as Missouri and Tennessee. Despite not possessing a major metropolis (Little Rock being the exception), there is much natural beauty throughout the state, hence why it’s certainly appropriate for Arkansas to be known as the “Natural State”.

When you visit an area like Mammoth Spring State Park, you can start to understand why this state should gain much more recognition. Driving around the surrounding area, it is noticeable that tourism to the area is limited and while I think this part of the state would benefit from additional visitors to boost the local economy, there is an inherent beauty to the state park without masses of visitors.

Where is Mammoth Spring State Park?

Unfortunately, Mammoth Spring State Park is not ideally located and easily accessible from any major airports or cities. We recommend if you are visiting from out of state to fly into Memphis and take the 2-3 hour drive to experience not only this state park but other notable attractions in the region (the Ozarks are a relatively short drive from here and one of the most scenic drives in the state can be started from nearby along the National Scenic 7 Byway).

Another option if you are planning on visiting this part of the US is to take a weekend road trip from Memphis to St Louis and then take a quick detour to explore Mammoth Spring en route. While it will add a couple more hours to the journey, it is well worth the effort and will add a more scenic drive between these two cities.

Living in Jonesboro, it’s around 90 minutes for us to drive there and definitely a spot we thoroughly enjoy spending a few hours relaxing and admiring the natural beauty of the park.

Things to Do at Mammoth Spring State Park

Ok, so what’s all the fuss about Mammoth Spring State Park? As mentioned, it is home to one of the world’s largest springs. The 9 million gallons of water form a 10-acre lake that then flow southward along Spring River (a popular spot among Arkansas locals to float down during the summer months).

A former working mill can be seen overlooking the dam where the water flows down Spring River and it’s this spot along with the hydroelectric plan that make up the history of Mammoth Spring. The history of the dam dates back to the late 19th century when Mammoth Spring Improvement Company constructed this to power the local gristmill in 1887.

1886 Frisco Train Depot

While the pièce de résistance at Mammoth Spring State Park is the natural beauty of the site, this is also home to a historic railroad depot that has since been transitioned into a museum. The abandoned Frisco train depot is now home to a caboose along with the museum that is definitely worth experiencing if you are intrigued by how this relates to the Mammoth Spring area.

Mammoth Spring State Park may not possess the size or glamor of some of even Arkansas’ larger, more infamous counterparts but it’s equally spectacular when it comes to natural beauty.
