The Story of Black Dinah Chocolatiers

I mentioned that we would share a little history on the Black Dinah Chocolatiers company. It all started on the small island of Isle au Haut just a few miles from the mainland coast of Maine. Kate Shaffer frequently made “exquisite confections” in her cafe and served these to locals and visitors alike.

Located in the shadow of a towering “crag” known locally as Black Dinah Mountain, word of Shaffer’s delicious chocolate concoctions spread and today, it’s no surprise that Black Dinah Chocolatiers is a name familiar not only throughout the state of Maine but also far beyond.

In 2012, Black Dinah Chocolatiers opened their first mainland tasting room in Blue Hill, Maine and since that day, the company hasn’t looked back! The concept of using local produce has been at the forefront of the company’s mission and this is certainly something that has resonated with us.

Our love of travel is such that we can not only appreciate the natural beauty of a new landscape but also we want to focus our attention on increasing exposure for local businesses. Regardless of where we are traveling in the world, our desire to visit local restaurants, cafes, boutique shops and coffee shops will hopefully inspire you to follow suit as you travel the world too!

The simple philosophy that Black Dinah Chocolatiers follows is…

We know you can taste the

I think this alone epitomizes the reason why we should all support local businesses when we travel the world. Global brands will continue to dominate the market share but that doesn’t mean they produce better quality products.

In fact, I would argue the opposite and when it comes to creating delicious chocolates, Black Dinah Chocolatiers is certainly the perfect example of a company that has differentiated themselves from the market through their pure quality of chocolate.

Choose the Perfect Christmas Gift

You may be thinking, a box of chocolates for someone you care about isn’t very much for a Christmas gift! However, how about if you create the perfect gift by combining a lucrative box of the individual’s favorite chocolates with an airline ticket or gift card to Maine or elsewhere?

If you have any avid travelers in your family, it’s a no-brainer that they will LOVE this and you have immediately created the perfect experience to ensure that Black Dinah Chocolatiers will always be remembered.

How do you choose the perfect selection? The beauty of browsing around the Black Dinah Chocolatiers website is that there are ample variations for every season. Budget, flavor, appearance, and personality will all come into play when determining the perfect choice but we are convinced that this company has the perfect blend that will meet all of your needs.

Choose Your Favorite Chocolates

Ok, so you have decided to take a look at the wide selection of chocolates available. But there lies the problem…there is so much to choose from! Where do you even begin to decide what to buy? Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite options.

Pumpkin Patch Truffles

The fall season is all about gorgeous colors, breathtaking natural scenery and of course, pumpkin pie! Why not combine all of these into creating the perfect selection of chocolates?

The Pumpkin Patch Truffles are the perfect blend of fall colors mixed with a hint of pumpkin spice to create a delicious chocolate truffle that would be perfect for anyone’s palate.

Sea Salt Caramels

I LOVE caramel!! It’s almost an addiction so anytime I find chocolates filled with caramel, I am pretty much sold. One of the flagship items on the product line is the Sea Salt Caramel featuring Venezuelan chocolate and a hint of local Maine sea salt!

Delicious doesn’t even begin to describe how good these are. I would argue that even if you are not a huge fan of sweet treats, the Sea Salt Caramel is one that everyone cannot help but fall in love with.

Vegan Selection

The beauty of Black Dinah Chocolatiers is that they cater for everyone and I LOVE the fact they have a vegan section with a variety of options to choose from. Whether you are intrigued by the Peanut Butter Peepers given the story behind them or perhaps you want to sample the Almond Sea Salt Bark, vegans around the world will also fall in love with this company.

Still intrigued by the story of the Peanut Butter Peepers? We were too! During the Spring season in New England, the pond in Black Dinah Hollow on Isle au Haut is full of frogs that serenade visitors with “peeps” ensuring that everyone knows that the winter season is behind and folks can look forward to the warmer months ahead. There is always a great story behind many of the chocolate selections on offer at Black Dinah Chocolatiers!

Maine Farm Market Truffles

It’s understandable if you browse around the website and have no idea what to choose! That’s where the Maine Farm Market Truffle box is the perfect solution.

You can choose from either an 8-piece or 18-piece box and dependent upon the time of year you purchase, will determine exactly what truffles you receive! Why? Because each of the truffles in this selection features an ingredient grown on a Maine farm!

When we received our 8-piece box of delicacies, we couldn’t wait to indulge in these delicious truffles. Here is what we found in our box of surprises:

  • Rhubarb – Essence of fresh spring rhubarb, a hint of clove and Venezuelan milk chocolate.
  • Chevre & Nib – Maine chevre, Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate and crunchy cocoa nibs.
  • Cassis de Resistance – Blackcurrant berries that are locally grown on the island and Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate.
  • Blueberry Black Pepper – Sweet, low bush berries, spicy Indian black pepper and Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate.
  • Northern Apple – Wild local apples, Venezuelan milk chocolate, and a single, maple-cumin glazed pecan.
  • Tree-to-Sea Maple Caramel – Maine maple syrup caramel covered in Venezuelan milk chocolate and sprinkled with a hint of hickory-smoked Maine sea salt.
  • Maine Mint – Purple-stemmed chocolate mint and Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate.
  • Red Raspberry – Raspberries sourced from local brambles and Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate.

Quite a collection and yes, they taste just as good as they look! Our favorite? That’s the million dollar question and honestly incredibly difficult! I was fond of both the Northern Apple and Cassis de Resistance truffles and Heather enjoyed the Tree-to-Sea Maple Caramel and Cassis de Resistance!

There is one major flaw in your theory as to why Black Dina is a great "Gift"...that flaw is that I WOULD EAT THEM ALL before giving them away or even before christmas. Guess I would have to make sure I never see them! What a great deal! I think Darcee would truly love those sea salt chocolates and all those truffles need to get in my belly!

Ah, these look so delicious, Chris! Definitely the perfect gift for Thanksgiving. I just love salted caramel and the shape of those pumpkin truffles is so cute.

Those pumpkin patch truffles are adorable but I'm a salted caramel sort of girl.
