Arkansas State Line in Texarkana – An Iconic Location

As you drive around America crossing the various dividing lines of the 48 contiguous states, many of them can go unnoticed but that certainly isn’t true as you pass between Arkansas and Texas. The wonderfully named town of Texarkana is the perfect location to divide these two states and we decided to take some time here to explore the history of this town. The Arkansas State Line and Texas State Line are not only apparent in Texarkana but instead they combine to create a focal point that residents of the town have come to cherish.

During our drive home from a trip to the beautiful Longhorn state, we hopped off I-30 and made our way to the heart of downtown Texarkana. I have to admit that I was a little surprised at just how quiet the town was, though we did visit on an early Sunday afternoon so perhaps the locals were busy enjoying some local barbeque or other typical Texas-Arkansas cuisine.

texarkana post office

Where is Texarkana?

Texarkana is located in the southwest corner of Arkansas, a little over 2 hours (140 miles) from Little Rock and under 3 hours from Dallas, Texas. It is the perfect location for Arkansans heading to Texas to take a break for a few minutes to grab a bite to eat or simply spend some time exploring this historic city. That is exactly what we decided to do on our journey home from a weekend in Dallas.

Texarkana Post Office

You may be surprised to hear that the most famous building in Texarkana is actually the post office. This isn’t like any old post office that you associate with a typical Arkansan town rather, it is a beautiful piece of architecture that plays an integral role given its iconic location on the state line dividing Arkansas from Texas.

texarkana post office and courthouse

In fact, the Texarkana Post Office is the only post office that actually sits in two different states. Dating back to its construction in 1932, this building is actually home to both the city post office and also courthouse which explains why this a little more historic than a traditional post office.

arkansas state line

Inside the post office is just like any other typical business or courthouse facility but outside is where you will see the real differences. The city of Texarkana created a photo opportunity on the south side of the building and painted a line on the road that emphasizes the state line.

As you can imagine, this is a huge hit for visitors to Texarkana who want to use this opportunity to grab a selfie in both Arkansas and Texas at the same time!

texarkana post office

There is ample parking around this building so we encourage you to park and get out to explore the area, though as I indicated you may be a little surprised at just how quiet it is around this part of Texarkana. The ‘Half-n-Half’ post office is located on the aptly named State Line Avenue, which in turn has been transformed into a traffic circle to allow vehicles easy access around this building.

Downtown Texarkana

Having done some research on Texarkana before heading back home from Dallas, I found this interesting comment on another website about taking a selfie at the iconic post office and the city of Texarkana in general.

Prove to the folks back home that you really did stand with one foot in Texas, and the other in Arkansas! Is there any other reason to stop in Texarkana? No.

Is there any truth behind the second part of this statement? We decided to explore a little more and see if we could dispute this!

texarkana arkansas

After seeing several murals on the so-called Texarkana Walk of Fame denoting images of the local history, we were becoming more and more convinced that perhaps the statement that this town has very little to offer was true.

arkansas state line

However, the history of these murals is a little more interesting as we found out that local students painted these images in 2005 as a depiction of the city’s historical buildings.

arkansas state line texarkana

This was all part of a community service improvement project on this side of Texarkana and there was a distinctive relationship with the Texarkana Cotton Belt Railroad Company which was a prevalent industry in the city’s history.

Texarkana’s Booming Rail Industry

But do a few murals painted by local school children convince visitors that Texarkana is worth experiencing? We needed more so we continued to explore what still appeared to be a very rundown and derelict neighborhood.

arkansas state line

An old, rusty train carriage did little to convince us otherwise and I have to say that we were becoming slightly disillusioned by what Texarkana had to offer.

arkansas state line

The history of the rail industry in Texarkana is one that is interesting and clearly something that locals are proud to be part of. The trains carried thousands of visitors to and from Texarkana in the late 19th century and the community wants to engage visitors in this part of the state’s history.

downtown texarkana

Summary

Perhaps knowing the history of Texarkana would help promote the city, but simply driving through and perusing what is available here is certainly lacking the attention required to attract visitors.

The post office and courthouse building is unique and actually is a credit to Texarkana. I love what has been done here to make this an attractive landmark for visitors to experience and capture their moment standing in two states at the same time but the reality is after you have visited this spot, there is very little else to keep you here.

texarkana downtown

Admittedly, we didn’t take the time to sample some of the local restaurants here which may be an appealing reason to spend more time but in terms of the downtown experience, it was certainly lacking and in all honesty is comparable to many other Arkansas towns around the state. It’s a sad situation because either they don’t have the funding to promote their community or perhaps just a lack of desire to create an appealing appearance to attract visitors from all corner of the globe.

Texarkana is worth visiting to experience the Texas-Arkansas state line but after visiting here, I think it’s fair to say you will be heading back along I-30 sooner that you may have imagined!

5 Amazing Reasons to Explore Hannibal Missouri in a Day

Colloquially known as ‘America’s Hometown’, Hannibal is a relatively small town in the heart of Missouri that offers a myriad of attractive reasons for visitors to want to learn more about this historic location. Of course, the highlight of Hannibal, Missouri is the boyhood home of Mark Twain. But there are plenty of other things to do in Hannibal Missouri that justify spending some time here while exploring the rest of the ‘Show Me’ state.

things to do in hannibal missouri

You could be forgiven for not knowing that this Missouri town has such a famous author associated with it, but by the time you leave Hannibal you will certainly know that the people here are proud of their affiliation with the great American author.

History of Hannibal Missouri

What is the first thing that springs to mind when you hear ‘Hannibal’? If your response is the same as mine, it will likely be Hannibal Lecter, the Lithuanian-American serial killer known for his carnivorous ideals.

hannibal missouri

Hannibal, Missouri is much more than just the infamous hometown of Mark Twain or the name of a serial killer. Instead, there are a number of other reasons that make this a popular spot for visitors passing through the state of Missouri either on a road trip or while experiencing some of the state’s other iconic attractions.

mark twain boyhood home

Having spent a few hours here en route to exploring the likes of Pella, Iowa and the Danish town of Elk Horn, we can attest that Hannibal is well and truly worth visiting, even if you only have a few hours to pass.

hannibal missouri

Boyhood Home of Mark Twain

Regardless of your opinion on Mark Twain and his novels, the community of Hannibal is best known as the boyhood home of the author himself, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain).

Now in Hannibal where I was brought up, we never talked about money. There was not enough money in the first place to furnish a topic of conversation. (Twain)

Hannibal is also the setting of two of Twain’s most famous novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

mark twain boyhood home of hannibal missouri

Throughout Twain’s novels, there are countless references to his boyhood home and as you begin to explore the historical sites that are present today, it’s interesting to note how Twain became such a key figure in American authorship from this small Missourian town.

mark twain boyhood home

It’s no surprise to hear that Hannibal draws thousands of American and international tourists every year as visitors seek to learn more about what inspired Twain to create such iconic novels.

tom sawyer fence

Was he just a normal child living alongside early settlers and Native American tribes? Or was Twain inspired at such an early age to create some of the most famous novels in American history?

Hannibal has had a hard time of it ever since I can recollect, and I was “raised” there. First, it had me for a citizen, but I was too young then to really hurt the place. (Twain)

Even if you opt against exploring inside the Mark Twain Boyhood Home Museum, there are various remnants throughout the town that portray the era when Twain was at the pinnacle of his writing years.

hannibal missouri

Twain may have moved on from Hannibal, Missouri but the old-town feel of the downtown area makes this an intriguing area to explore, especially if you have an interest in learning more about how historic American towns looked in the 19th-century.

Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse

If you love panoramic views, the climb to the summit of the 244 steps will definitely be worthwhile.

mark twain memorial lighthouse

The Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse awaits but it’s the breathtaking scenery overlooking Hannibal and the nearby Mississippi River that is the real attraction here.

mark twain memorial lighthouse

The lighthouse itself was never used for navigation purposes along the Mississippi River, rather it was constructed as a memorial to Mark Twain so that Hannibal had a lasting memory of the city’s most infamous individual that hailed from this small Missouri town.

things to do in hannibal missouri

The lighthouse was first lighted in 1935 by President Franklin Roosevelt in celebration of Twain’s 100th birthday. It has been lit on several occasions since that date by other iconic American Presidents but renovation is currently taking place to ensure that Twain’s legacy remains prevalent overlooking the city of Hannibal.

Mark Twain Cave

If you love adventure and want to visit the oldest operating show cave in the state of Missouri, head on over to yes you guessed it…Mark Twain Cave. Tours of the caves have been offered since 1886 and it has become a National Natural Landmark since 1972.

The cave played an integral role in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer so it is no surprise to hear that it was named after the Hannibal native. Mark Twain Cave is part of a system of caves and along with Cameron Cave form a very distinctive combination unique from anything else in the state of Missouri.

The cave was but a labyrinth of crooked aisles that ran into each other and out again and led nowhere. (Twain)

The caves have winding passages through them but offer little in terms of geological formations like stalagmites and stalactites that are stereotypical of other cave systems in the region. The caves are composed of a soft limestone known as Louisiana Lithographic Limestone and these can only be found in the region of Hannibal and within a short geographical proximity to here.

Tom and Huck Statue

As you walk towards the Mark Twain Lighthouse, you can’t help but notice the Tom and Huck Statue that stands proudly at the bottom of the 244 stairs. Dating back to 1926 when Frederick C. Hibbard sculpted this iconic statue, this has stood in the heart of Hannibal as a key memorial to two of Twain’s most infamous characters.

tom and huck statue

For many years, we are lead to believe that Tom Sawyer preferred to stay away from Huck Finn, at least when in the presence of respectable individuals, though as you can see from the statue today, they were clearly comrades waiting to embark on their next adventure.

Historic Downtown Hannibal

From Becky Thatcher’s House to the building known as Grant’s Drug Store, Hannibal’s downtown area is well worth taking some time to explore.

Regardless of your interest, Hannibal has enough idiosyncrasy to keep you intrigued and is well worthy of spending a few hours to learn more about this city.

hannibal missouri

Summary

Having left St. Louis earlier that day, I have to admit that we stumbled across Hannibal without any real knowledge of what this town had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised to spend a few hours here and learn all about what we can now attest to be the boyhood home of Mark Twain, and clearly this city is proud to promote this iconic former native.

If you are passing through Missouri, we strongly recommend taking an hour or two to visit Hannibal and we don’t think that you will leave disappointed. The views from the Mark Twain Lighthouse are epic and the history and quirkiness throughout the downtown area make this an attractive destination worth exploring.

Why These Economy Airlines Need to Be on Your Radar?

What are your top priorities when searching for flights to travel the world? Comfort, reputation and perhaps the most important aspect of all, cost! We are seeing a rapid growth in economy airlines around the world that are becoming more and more popular primarily because of their competitive advantage. Let’s be honest, we all love saving money especially if we can have a good experience that justifies the cost savings of flying with these low-cost airlines.

Europe has been a hotbed of low-cost airlines for quite some time with the likes of Easyjet, Ryanair, and Monarch providing flights around continental Europe for low prices. Of course, these companies offering low fares don’t come without negative media so we wanted to take a look at some of the best economy airlines around the world that have either dodged the negativity or provided great service to some of our travel blogging friends who have flown them in recent years.

Before taking a look at some specific airlines around the world, we want to share a few of our pros and cons of flying these so-called ‘cheaper’ airlines.

Benefits of Economy Airlines

We are all looking to save a buck or two when it comes to traveling, especially if you are a frequently flyer. The mass influx of low-cost airlines has made this a viable option for many flights around the world, so let’s take a look at some of the key benefits that these types of airlines bring to the flight industry.

  • Low Cost – The cost itself is a huge competitive advantage! For many travelers, this is the only aspect that holds them back from traveling more frequently. Now that we have so many economy airlines offering cut-price deals, well this has created opportunities for many people!
  • Early Booking Equals Cost Savings – Directly related to the overall concept of saving money is the benefit of booking early. Low-cost airlines frequently offer low price fares for the early adopters rather than last minute deals that tend to be more expensive.
  • New Planes – Have you ever noticed that a lot of mainstream airlines tend to have dated planes, whereas the newer economy airlines are showcasing brand-new 787 Dreamliners and other modern models?

787 dreamliner

  • One-Way Tickets – Low-cost airlines tend to offer one-way tickets without having to pay large fees for not having a return ticket. This is definitely beneficial for travelers who want more flexibility and the ability to book return tickets when they want to.

Drawbacks of Low-Cost Airlines

Flying low-cost airlines is a no-brainer, right? Purchasing a $100 ticket versus the equivalent $400 on a more reputed airline is surely something you should do 99 times out of a 100. Of course, there are always going to be doubters and with good reason because flying a low-cost airline is not always a perfect experience.

Here are some of the negative aspects that we have experienced first-hand along with others that have become common reasons why people choose to opt against economy type airlines.

  • Hidden Fees – Possibly the biggest drawback is the dreaded hidden fees! All too frequently, low-cost airlines introduce you to a base rate but the reality is that once you have checked in, paid for your seat, printed your boarding pass, paid for your luggage and arrived at your destination…well, it may not be quite as low-cost anymore!
  • Poor Scheduling – Be prepared to be an early-bird with low-cost airlines frequently offering flights before 6:00AM or late night flights given that the majority of peak times are already taken by mainstream airlines.
  • Customer Service – Low-cost airlines frequently have stricter policies that lead to an apparent lack of customer service. The hidden fees for rebooking flights may also have a negative impact on customer service or at least the overall impression portrayed by gate agents.
  • Baggage Restrictions – Passengers are all too often restricted to carry-on luggage only when using low-fare tickets, especially when you hear about the extortionate rates for checking in bags with economy airlines. Be prepared to check the exact measurements and weight of all your bags (checked and carry-on), as gate agents for low-cost airlines tend to be sticklers for ensuring the baggage guidelines are met to the exact number.

Ok, so we have established some of the pros and cons of flying these airlines but I am sure you are ready to hear about which global economy airlines are the best of the best.

Cebu Pacific Air

When it comes to low-cost airlines in the Philippines, nothing can beat Cebu Pacific Air. They always hold “seat sales,” when one can book domestic flights, return, for $10, and international tickets for as low as $20. I have bought several tickets that cheap, e.g., from Manila to Kota Kinabalu and from Manila to Kuala Lumpur, and there was nothing I could say against it. Even the food is delicious (paid separately, of course).

cebu pacific air

It’s a no-frills airline and there were times when my flights were delayed or cancelled (sometimes for no reason at all), but they are generally okay. You can also choose your seat for free if you book via the kiosks in the airport or over the counter.

cebu pacific air

Given how inexpensive their flights can be, if bought in advance, I would always choose it over other airlines in the Philippines for its price alone.

Aleah Taboclaon of Solitary Wanderer shares her experiences about why Cebu Pacific Air is such an awesome airline to fly with.

AirAsia

We’ve flown AirAsia a number of times from China to Thailand, Japan to Korea, Korea to the Philippines and all throughout the Philippines itself. Though a low-cost airline with carry-on restrictions, we found them fair when it came to gauging overweight baggage compared to other airlines and since we often travel with only a carry-on in Asia, AirAsia became our preferred economy airline.

airasia

You may not always have a lot of leg room and you’ll definitely have to pay for checked luggage, seat options, and meals, but the flights usually have an unbeatable price, there are different seating options for more comfort and the flight routes are generally short enough that it doesn’t end up being an issue in the end.

airasia economy airlines

If you do end up shelling out some cash for an in-flight meal you’ll also find different menus for each route allowing you a taste of the cuisine you’ll experience at your destination!

Thanks to Carolann and Macrae from One Modern Couple for sharing their experiences about flying with AirAsia. After such negative media attention in recent years, it’s nice to hear some positive experiences about this Asian airline!

Jetstar

Qantas, Australia’s national airline, has a little brother known as Jetstar. This airline is Qantas’ budget affiliate and is now just as famous as its big brother within Australia. I have used Jetstar countless times quite commonly on the route from Adelaide to Bali as well as shorter domestic flights.

Pros

  • Value for money – Adelaide to Bali one way can be as cheap as $200AU
  • Direct flight – lots of airlines flying from Adelaide to Bali are no longer direct

Cons

  • No entertainment provided
  • Any beverages and food on the airline cost money

jetstar economy airlines

I feel the cons provided above are stock standard for budget airlines and something I can live with easily. I come equipped with entertainment to pass the time i.e. a book or use it as a time to write blog posts. Also, I come prepared with food for domestic flights to keep costs down and purchase food at the airport for international flights as it is cheaper than on the airline.

I can’t complain about Jetstar and wouldn’t hesitate using them again.

Lauren Jessica from The Traveller’s Guide By #ljojlo shares her opinions on why Jetstar are a feasible airline to use for flights in and around Australia/Oceania. We are looking forward to flying Jetstar’s new 787 Dreamliner in First-Class when we head from Singapore to Melbourne at the end of 2016!

VietJet Air

On our recent trip to Vietnam, we had originally booked flights with Jetstar Pacific. After having multiple flights cancelled and delayed, I made the last minute decision to change airlines and fly with VietJet Air.

vietjet air

VietJet Air is a budget airline flying within Vietnam and are very cheap! The flights were booked very last minute/same day and we still paid approximately $50 (AUD), when I originally looked at flights they were under $20 (AUD)! The planes that we had both ways appeared to be relatively new aircraft and we had an Australian pilot on the way to Nha Trang.

I do have to mention that they are prone to delays but to be fair I think every airline in Vietnam is. Allow yourself plenty of time, you will be required to get a bus out to the tarmac to board your flight. Once you start moving it is very swift from that point. Gate changes are frequent, so always be prepared to check the board while waiting.

Personally, I think they are a great value airline and would happily fly with them again.

Thanks to Sally Lucas from Our 3 Kids V The World for sharing her experience of flying with VietJet Air from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang.

Tigerair Australia

Tigerair Australia is a budget carrier that flies within Australia and to Bali also. If you are expecting champagne and caviar, you will be out of luck. With Tigerair Australia, you pay for what you want. We flew with Tigerair from Sydney to Cairns. We read the fine print, so we only arrived with allowed baggage, and we arrived on time.

tigerair economy airlines

The cost is a big factor, and flights are not cheap in Australia, so Tigerair Australia was a bargain. The flight departed on time, arrived on time, and our baggage was waiting for us on the carousel. Undoubtedly this is because they have a quick turnaround, but I couldn’t fault Tigerair Australia.

tigerair economy airline

Thanks to Paula and Gordon from the Contented Traveller for sharing their experiences and opinions on Tigerair Australia, another Australian low-cost airline that you should consider the next time you head ‘Down Under’.

JetBlue

I travelled with JetBlue a few years ago while in the United States – we took a flight from Boston to LA. I’m not going to lie, almost seven hours on a budget airline didn’t fill me with excitement – but JetBlue totally surpassed any and all of my expectations. The main reason for this was the incredible staff and their attitude.

Immediately, I was pretty entertained to see that they served actual BLUE dyed crisps to match their brand, which the staff served by throwing to passengers. The light-hearted approach they took and the fact that they all seemed to actually ENJOY their jobs was totally infectious – for once, passengers were talking to each other and the flight flew (literally) by.

I would totally recommend them as a viable economy airline in North America!

Thanks to Lucy Hemmings from Lucy’s Miles Away for sharing her experiences flying JetBlue in USA.

Southwest Airlines

Over the last few years, we have flown a variety of airlines domestically around the States but Southwest Airlines has definitely been our preferred choice for a number of reasons. In terms of routes out of our local airport, Southwest isn’t ideal but if you are flying out of one of their hubs such as Baltimore this is undoubtedly a huge positive.

southwest airlines

Two free bags, free cancellation up to 10 minutes prior to departure and open seating are just a couple of examples why Southwest is such a popular choice amongst US travelers. But Southwest Airlines are now diversifying their routes overseas and now offer a variety of international destinations on their growing portfolio.

I love everything about Southwest Airlines and their customer service is second to none, at least from our experiences. They are readily available to talk to on Twitter or over the phone and always seek to improve your customer experience if you encounter issues. If you read our post a couple of years ago on the top 5 reasons to fly Southwest, you will know that we have been avid fans of this economy airline for quite some time!

Summary

From Southwest Airlines to Cebu Pacific Air, there are more and more global economy airlines becoming prevalent factors in the airline industry. It’s not all doom and gloom when you think about low-cost airlines, as many stereotypes suggest.

In fact, from the experiences we have shared above thanks to our travel blogging friends from around the world, many of these airlines should be considered ahead of mainstream airlines that have saturated the market for many decades.

What are your favorite economy airlines around the world? Feel free to share your positive and negative experiences of budget airlines.

Denver Walking Tour – How to Make the Most of 24 Hours

Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is a gorgeous city with a plethora of activities, landmarks and attractive reasons for visitors to enjoy their stay here. Denver, Colorado is located in close proximity to a number of 14,000 ft peaks so for the avid skiers out there this is a perfect destination to stay before heading into the Rockies for a whirlwind experience on some of America’s finest slopes. If you plan on spending at least a day or two in Denver, we strongly encourage you to take a Denver walking tour to experience a myriad of history and culture that epitomizes the Mile High City.

I recently headed to Denver for a higher education conference but I made sure that I had some time aside to explore this beautiful city. Unfortunately, Heather had to stay at home for this trip so this was one of the few times that I explored a new city without my travel buddy in tow. I can certainly attest that traveling alone is not the same as sharing your travel experiences with your best friend (kudos to the travelers out there that go solo)!

Downtown Denver Walking Tour

Staying at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Denver, I was pretty close to a number of key landmarks that I had planned on visiting. Prior to arriving in Denver, I researched walking tours of the downtown metropolis and stumbled across a free tour offered daily at 10:00AM.

downtown denver walking tour

Despite this appearing to be an attractive option especially given the positive experiences we have encountered on other free walking tours around the world, the time of this tour prevented me from taking part of this.

However, I wasn’t going to let this prevent me from exploring downtown Denver! Instead, I opted to take a self-guided tour but utilized the map provided by the free walking tours organization as a handy guide to some of the most infamous attractions worth visiting in downtown Denver.

Meeting Location: The Veteran’s Memorial, 1449 Lincoln St., Denver, CO, 80203

Let’s take a look at the walking tour I embarked on, before sharing some of the key reasons and history behind each of the attractions/landmarks that make Denver such an appealing city to explore on foot.

  1. Colorado State Capitol
  2. Civic Center Park
  3. Denver Art Museum
  4. Denver Public Library
  5. City and County Building
  6. US Mint
  7. 16th Street Mall
  8. Union Station

There are certainly more attractions that you could visit such as Larimer’s Square and Coors Field, but if you are able to visit the above then you have caught a glimpse of why Denver is such a popular spot for visitors.

Colorado State Capitol

If you have followed us on our travels around America, you will know that we love visiting State Capitol buildings within each of the states we visit. Heading to Denver, I had the opportunity to explore the Colorado State Capitol which is yet another fine example of ornate architecture that provides a unique reflection on the state.

colorado state capitol

Dating back to 1894 when construction was completed and the doors first opened, the Colorado State Capitol is constructed from local Colorado white granite. The focal point of this capitol building is like many others around the nation – the iconic dome.

colorado state capitol

The distinctive gold leafed dome was a ‘cosmetic’ feature added in 1908 but undoubtedly as you approach this building, it provides a standout aspect that makes this building easily identifiable around Denver.

colorado state capitol gold dome

I only walked around the grounds of the State Capitol, though for visitors interested in experiencing the interior, free guided tours are available daily between 10:00AM and 3:00PM. This also gives visitors access to the summit of the dome which provides stunning panoramic views around Denver and beyond toward the Rocky Mountains.

Civic Center Park

A short walk from the Colorado State Capitol is the heart of Denver’s green space – the Civic Center Park.

Home to a number of iconic memorials and a popular spot for locals to relax in the summer months, the Civic Center Park offers a moment of seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of city life in Denver.

Greek influence is apparent throughout the park, with the Greek amphitheater layout being a key focal point of this area. At one end of the Civic Center Park is the Greek Theater and Colonnade of Civic Benefactors, while at the other end is the Voorhies Memorial to the north.

Denver Art Museum

Denver’s Civic Center is also home to the impressive Denver Art Museum which is an impressive structure from the outside, regardless of whether you have any interest in exploring the art displays inside.

denver art museum

It is renowned as being one of the largest art galleries between the west coast and Chicago, offering over 68,000 artifacts and works from some of the world’s finest artists.

The Hamilton Wing is the most impressive feature of the Denver Art Museum and it’s no surprise to hear that the famous architect, Daniel Libeskind, was the brains behind this particular design.

I was inspired by the light and geology of the Rockies, but most of all by the wide-open faces of the people of Denver (Libeskind,2012)

A myriad of collections are available for your perusal as you walk around the interior of the museum, though given my time was limited I opted to just appreciate the beauty of the architectural ingenuity that created this gorgeous museum.

I was fortunate to walk by the museum just as the sun was setting, creating a breathtaking reflection from the titanium panels that portray the modern design of this building.

Denver Public Library

Visiting a public library while exploring a new location may not sound like the most appealing way to spend your time, but it can actually be a rewarding experience.

denver public library

The Denver Public Library dates back to 1955 and although it may not have the same appeal as New York’s Public Library, it is certainly a building worth exploring to check out the vast collections on display.

denver public library

The newest wing of the library was completed in 1990 and is a modern architectural design that fits perfectly with the gorgeous Denver Art Museum that is located in close proximity. Denver may not be the first city you think about when you consider modern architecture, but I stumbled across various examples that shows modern design has in place in the Mile High City!

denver public library

Quirky architecture is also present on the grounds of the Public Library with a red painted steel chair seating a horse that towers above onlookers. Referred to as “The Yearling”, this was originally commissioned for an elementary school in New York City and after spending some time in Central Park, it was generously donated to the people of Denver.

City and County Building

Directly opposite the Colorado State Capitol across the Civic Center Park is another gorgeous structure known as the City and County Building. Constructed in 1932, the completion of this building marked the end of a number of designs in this area leading to the overall cultural representation of Denver.

This is one of the more spectacular classical designs in Denver and provides a perfect backdrop when the sun the setting and you sit on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol looking through the park and beyond.

US Mint

If you are interested in taking a free guided tour of a location where you can watch official coins being produced, take a short walk over from the City and County Building and the Denver US Mint is the spot for you.

denver us mint

Having experienced a historical look at the coin making process throughout America during our visit to the New Orleans Mint, I was intrigued to learn more about how Denver’s location plays such an integral part in the US economy.

The history dates back to the beginning of the 20th-century when the government decided to convert a former assay office into a fully functioning mint.

16th Street Mall

The heart of downtown Denver is focused throughout the 16th street mall. Whether you are intrigued by a little retail therapy or sampling some fine dining establishments, this part of Denver is an attractive part of the city worth exploring.

16th street mall

After experiencing much of Denver’s historical neighborhood, I spent quite a bit of time walking up and down the 16th street mall while also taking some time to experience the free bus service that takes locals and visitors alike from one end to the other making stops at almost every block.

denver clock tower

The clock tower along the 16th street mall is one of the most popular attractions in Denver.

Union Station

The final stop on my self-guided tour of Denver saw me head to the end of the 16th street mall to explore Union Station. Home to another of Denver’s popular public transportation hubs, Union Station is also home to an eclectic array of restaurants, retail shops and the new Crawford Hotel that recently opened in 2014.

The history of Union Station dates way further back than recent years. In the mid 19th-century, the new Denver Pacific Railway line demanded a station in Denver to connect the Mile High City with the transcontinental line at Cheyenne, Wyoming.

A number of stations were developed but for local passengers, it proved to be rather inconvenient as many transfers were required, hence the reason for the development of Union Station which finally opened in 1881.

union station denver

Today, the unique architecture of Union Station makes this an eye-catching attraction regardless of your interest in train stations. The open air train hall is a relatively new addition which was finished in 2011 and certainly fits the modern design of many other Denver constructions that you can see throughout this tour of downtown.

Renovations to the historic terminal soon followed and Union Station is now the most popular spot for visitors to connect in Denver’s downtown district.

Summary

Downtown Denver is a cool area to explore and it is an extremely walkable city that I encourage you to experience on foot. As you can see, there is a lot to see in a relatively small area and regardless of your personal interests, there is something in Denver for everyone (you probably noticed I never even mentioned a topic that has been hot on the press in recent years since Colorado’s legalization!).

Visiting Denver without Heather was not by choice and I look forward to us both having an opportunity to return here in the near future to experience more of the downtown area plus hopefully expand out into some of Colorado’s other infamous destinations.

Why Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest Is a Beautiful Landmark?

2

In the heart of the Hungarian capital is a medieval castle that at first glance you would think dates back thousands of years. Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest is located in City Park and after visiting here on our recent trip to Hungary, it is certainly an attraction you cannot afford to miss.

On a cold, eerily quiet New Year’s Day, we headed to City Park in search of this wonderfully named castle. The conditions were perfect for exploring such a medieval looking castle. The entrance to City Park known as Heroes Square is gorgeous as it reflects the various Hungarian leaders throughout history. But the real highlight in what you may first consider a quiet park is the unequivocally stunning Vajdahunyad Castle!

heroes square in budapest

Let’s take a look at the history, architecture and iconography of this gorgeous Hungarian castle.

Visitor Information

The beauty of Vajdahunyad Castle is that you can experience the real beauty of this castle for FREE, 24 hours a day. That’s right, entry inside the courtyard is free of charge and allows visitors the opportunity to stroll around the grounds and get a close up look at Alpár’s ingenious design.

There is a small admission fee associated with entering the castle, so if you are interested in learning more about the history and interior of this castle, check out the following admission prices and opening hours of the castle (we recommend that you check the Vajdahunyad Castle website for up-to-date information as these prices/hours are always subject to change at the time of writing this article).

Admission Prices

Adults – HUF 1,100 (Approximately $4)
Children – HUF 550 (Approximately $2)

Opening Hours

Monday – Closed
Tuesday to Friday – 10:00AM to 4:00PM (November 1 to March 31); 10:00AM to 5:00PM (April 1 to October 31)
Saturday – Sunday – 10:00AM to 5:00PM

Vajdahunyad Castle History

The history of Vajdahunyad Castle is actually more recent than you may think. Construction started on this beautiful medieval masterpiece in the late 19th century and was finished in 1896.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

The original construction of the castle was made out of wood and cardboard, a unique feature which of course didn’t stand the test of time. In the early 20th century, the Budapest local government decided to make Vajdahunyad Castle a more permanent structure using brick and stone and was completed in 1908.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

The original castle was designed by architect Ignác Alpár and even during the reconstruction years, every effort was made to maintain the design of this iconic Hungarian architect.

The castle was constructed to recognize the 1000th birthday of the Hungarian State in 1896 for the Millennial Exhibition, along with the Millennium Monument in Heroes Square and Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda Castle hill that we later explored.

millennium monument in heroes square

However, there is an ironic twist to this story. Delays caused the construction of the castle to actually celebrate the 1001th birthday because history suggests that Hungary was founded in 895AD. Of course, when Vajdahunyad Castle was finally completed, the one-year delay certainly didn’t prevent mass celebrations here!

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

You may be wondering what is so spectacular and special about Vajdahunyad Castle? Well, aside from the beautiful exterior and overall appearance of the castle which we will explore later, the overall design has an inherent meaning which Alpár intended. His design was supposed to mimic each architectural style in Hungarian history.

hungarian architecture at vajdahunyad castle

Did he succeed? I think it’s fair to say that there is a very distinctive look about this castle and so many different aspects that reflect the various architectural eras that Hungary has experienced.

Architectural Design

From Romanesque to Gothic to Baroque, Vajdahunyad Castle features a number of components in the architectural design that reflect each of these styles. As you begin exploring the grounds, it’s possible that you will notice more artistic styles in the composition of the castle.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest hungary

The medieval feel of this castle dates back to the 11th-century Romanesque era that was prevalent until the end of the 13th century. Vajdahunyad Castle reflects this era through ‘The Church of Jak’ which is an iconic recreation of a beautiful basilica located in the western part of Hungary.

church of jak

The intricate details of the entrance to this church are a typical reflection on Romanesque architecture but perhaps the overall facade and medieval style cloister are more telling examples of how Hungarian architecture was portrayed during the Middle Ages.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

Possibly the most beautiful feature of Vajdahunyad Castle are the gothic inspired gates leading to the courtyard. A couple of years ago we received an image of these gorgeous gates and at the time, we had never even heard of this castle in Budapest. Immediately we knew that we had to see this for ourselves!

vajdahunyad castle gates

If you are convinced that all of this architecture portrays a castle reflecting medieval times, perhaps you will be surprised to hear that the gorgeous Baroque era is also apparent throughout the castle.

gothic inspired architectureDepicting some of Hungary’s most beautiful palaces, Vajdahunyad Castle exquisitely takes some of the most breathtaking elements and ideas of these prestigious landmarks and transforms them into the design features you see in the castle today.

Myth of Count Dracula

Did you know that the author of Count Dracula, Bram Stoker, may well have been inspired by Vajdahunyad Castle? It’s feasible that Stoker may have visited this castle prior to writing the Dracula novels.

Bram Stoker pictured his Dracula living in the castle of Vajdahunyad, or maybe a similar castle somewhere in the dark and stark hills of Transylvania.

However, a more important aspect that suggests the above question is true is that his focus on the main character was a reflection of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century Transylvanian prince who was in fact imprisoned inside Vajdahunyad Castle for a period of time.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

Are you convinced that this is true? Regardless of your stance here, it certainly makes the visit to Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest even more interesting as you search for clues to support this theory.

vajdahunyad castle in budapest

Summary

If you haven’t visited Hungary, it’s plausible that you may never have heard of Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest. But once you visit the Hungarian capital, you would be hard pressed to avoid this gorgeous landmark because it really is worth exploring.

We were fortunate to visit here on New Year’s Day when the grounds were relatively quiet and we were able to really explore everything this castle has to offer. Unfortunately, the castle was closed but a return trip to visit the interior is certainly something we can look forward to.

Whether you believe that Bram Stoker was inspired by Vajdahunyad to create the infamous Count Dracula novels, just contemplating this as you walk around the medieval style grounds will make this an even more intriguing experience.

A Guide to New York City – Everything You Need to Know

If you have never visited New York City, you don’t know know what you are missing! Our guide to New York City will hopefully give you an insight into why you should be adding this to your travel schedule sooner rather than later. For those of you that have visited the Big Apple, I am sure you will pick up a few useful tips that you will want to experience on your next trip.

From the best hotels in the heart of downtown Manhattan to some of the hidden gems we have uncovered, this post is a handy guide to exploring one of our favorite global cities. We are also delighted to feature some of our friends from the travel blogging world who have visited New York City and want to share their best insider tips.

guide to new york city

How to Get There?

New York City is served by three main airports, all of which offer easy access to downtown Manhattan.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Various methods of public transportation are available from JFK to Manhattan but the Airtrain offers connecting services through both Jamaica Station and Howard Beach Station. The most common method is to use the AirTrain and MTA Subway system.

Travel time from JFK to Manhattan is anywhere from 60 to 75 minutes.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

The AirTrain Newark connects NJ Transit with Penn Station in Manhattan. Take the AirTrain from any terminal and then hop on the NJ Transit line.

Travel time from EWR to Manhattan is in the range of 35 to 50 minutes.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

New York City buses provide service between LaGuardia and Manhattan. The M60 bus is the most common option for visitors traveling between the two locations. The bus fare is $2.75.

Travel time from LGA to Manhattan is between 30 to 45 minutes.

Other Methods

The best alternative to reaching New York if you don’t fly is to use the Amtrak train service. Frequent train routes are available into New York’s Penn Station or Grand Central Station depending on where you arriving from.

new york city amtrak

Driving to New York City is obviously an option but not one that we would recommend. We have rented a car before at Newark and drove in and around NYC but with the volume of traffic and not to mention the cost of toll roads, it’s not our recommended form of transportation here. However, if you are planning on taking a road trip to nearby states or New York locations then perhaps this is a feasible option.

Where to Stay?

New York City visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation. Whether you are looking for a luxury, boutique hotel or an Airbnb option, the Big Apple has plenty of options. Budget, location, and accommodation type are all factors you should consider before heading to New York City.

Unusual in New York, and a real find.” – Paula McInerney from Contented Traveller

Where to Eat?

When you visit New York City, the first thing you should avoid is chain restaurants! There are just too many great local options that you need to experience.

Gansevoort Market

Location: To Be Determined

Gansevoort Market is a great spot to sample fine, local cuisine in a typical marketplace environment. The location was formerly at the High Line in the Meatpacking District of NYC but in early 2016, the decision was made to move this.

Although this is currently in a transition period, the majority of vendors have indicated they will move to the new location once this has been finalized.

This is certainly a gem in New York City and one that you have to experience. Whether you want to experience a ‘bruffin’ filled with ingredients typical of a country around the world or perhaps you would prefer some authentic Mexican at a taco van.

Insider Tips

New York Pass

Take advantage of the New York Pass if you are visiting either for the first time or on a return visit. Admission price hikes are common around NYC simply because of the volume of visitors every day, but the New York Pass offers visitors the opportunity to have great savings plus fast-track access to many attractions around the city.

New York City Walking Tours

Participate in a walking tour (either paid or free tours are available) around a neighborhood like SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy. This is a great way to meet a native New Yorker and find out some real insider tips on the best local restaurants, shops etc.

Alternative to Broadway Shows

“If you want to see a show, that’s different from the typical Broadway musical I definitely recommend seeing the interactive show Sleep No More” – Alouise Dittrick from Take Me To The World

Central Park

“Enter Central Park from W 72nd Street (Subway lines 1,2,3 and B,C). Check out Strawberry Fields, The Lake to see the rowboats and continue down The Mall to see the street performers, street artists, and the scene of many romantic comedy movies. As you exit Central Park, hit The Plaza for some afternoon tea.” – Chris Dolce Castillo from Dolce Does Travel

5th Avenue and Beyond

“Follow 5th Ave past St Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building, on my way to the Flatiron Building at 23rd and 5th Ave. It’s a lengthy walk, but at the end is Eataly, where I highly recommend lunch or mid-afternoon stop at their rooftop spot La Birreria!” – Chris Dolce Castillo from Dolce Does Travel

Manhattan Bridge vs Brooklyn Bridge

“Consider visiting the Manhattan Bridge rather than the crowded Brooklyn Bridge. Riding a bike here is definitely more fun as it provides maximum shade and cyclists have their own bike path which is segregated from the walking path, so you won’t have pedestrians wandering into your path every few seconds (this is what happens on the Brooklyn Bridge)!” – Vivian Lee from Miss Happy Feet

The Cloisters Museum

“The Cloisters: A hidden museum in New York. This branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is devoted to medieval art from Europe. Wander around the stunning gardens, take in the view over the Hudson River and see the fabulously reconstructed cloisters which are filled with priceless medieval art, tapestries, and statues.” – Jenny Freedman from A Taste of Travel

The Highline and Chelsea Market

“Check out the Highline Park to see a renovated park built on old subway tracks a story above ground and get a different view of New York City. Stop by Chelsea Market for a snack before you head up there.” – Sarah Kim Chetrit from Tales From a Fork

Best Hidden Views in New York City

“For the best views I recommend going to Press Lounge, Le Bain at the Standard Hotel, The Skylark, The Jane Rooftop, Jimmy at the James Hotel, SixtyFive is one of my favorites as it’s the bar at Rockefeller Center (Tip: no need to pay to go to Top of the Rock when you can go to the SixtyFive bar for free with the same views)” – Christine Tran from Tour de Lust

Radegast Hall and Biergarten

“The Radegast Hall & Biergarten in Brooklyn will shatter your preconceived notions about the cost of eating in NYC. A bratwurst with fries is only $11 from the grill and there’s live music with no cover charge seven nights a week!” – Cherri Littleton Megasko from Bucket List Travel Club

Summary

New York City can never be described in just a few words but the ‘ultimate 24-hour city in the world’ is a pretty good summary! There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to experience that spending just a few days here will only touch the surface of what New York City has to offer.

We hope that this guide that we have put together in collaboration with many of our travel blogging experts who either live in NYC or frequently visit will help you the next time you plan on visiting the Big Apple!

How to Get to the Isle of Wight – Enjoy a Ferry Crossing

6

Located in the heart of ‘The Solent’ just off the south coast of England is a beautiful island that many people have either never heard of or considered visiting. The Isle of Wight is a spectacular part of England and having experienced this island on numerous occasions, I would strongly encourage everyone visiting this part of the world to consider paying this a visit. If you are thinking about how to get to the Isle of Wight, hopefully, this will help inspire you to take a trip across The Solent!

how to get to the isle of wight

The best and most common way to reach the island is to use one of the ferry companies that leaves from a variety of ports on the English mainland and we want to share our experience and why this in itself is worth taking a trip across to the Isle of Wight.

Is the Isle of Wight Worth It?

Perhaps the first question you should be asking yourselves is whether the Isle of Wight is worth the time and effort required? The answer is almost certainly yes! From the medieval history associated with Carisbrooke Castle to the gorgeous natural attraction of the Needles in Alum Bay, the Isle of Wight is spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do on this small island.

needles at alum bay

The Isle of Wight Music Festival held annually in June is one of the most popular attractions associated with the island and attracts visitors from all around the world. With legendary artists such as Bryan Adams, David Bowie, The Who and Coldplay having featured on the stage, it’s no surprise to hear that this is a highlight attraction every year on the Isle of Wight.

isle of wight

Another festival iconic to the island may not quite have the stature as the music festival but is equally as popular among visitors. The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival is held outside of Newchurch in the heart of the island and offers an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to show off their most impressive garlic collection, celebrate the summer season and just have fun!

isle of wight countryside

But perhaps it’s the natural beauty that appeals so much about the Isle of Wight. The stereotypical green landscape of British countryside is represented across the island as the untouched landscapes are a sight to behold.

isle of wight

Don’t just take our word for it, consider one of the following options and find out why the Isle of Wight truly is a hidden gem in the English Channel!

How to Get to the Isle of Wight – Port Options

There are currently three different ports on the English mainland that you can depart from in order to reach the Isle of Wight. Depending on your geographical preference or perhaps affiliation with the two ferry companies that sail, this will likely determine which is the best option.

how to get to the isle of wight

Southampton to Cowes

The most popular departure point from England is Southampton. Whether this is because of the iconic significance of Southampton given that it was the departure port for Titanic over 100 years ago, or perhaps because it is more convenient than the other two locations, either way, this was our chosen port to head across The Solent.

maritime museum southampton

While you are waiting in Southampton, take some time to visit the Maritime Museum to learn more about the Titanic voyage and maritime history iconic to this part of England.

how to get to the isle of wight

Red Funnel is the company that operates daily from Southampton to West Cowes and provides a return service from East Cowes to the same port in Southampton. Depending on whether you have a vehicle or simply traveling by foot, you have two alternatives to choose from.

southampton england

The high speed ‘Red Jet’ ferry service is for foot passengers only and makes a swift crossing in only 25 minutes, reaching speeds of 35-40 knots!

red funnel redjet service

For those that prefer the calmer and ‘cheaper’ option, the ferry service allows visitors to the island to take their vehicle across. In just under an hour, you can be on the Isle of Wight using this ferry option.

southampton to cowes ferry crossing

Both options offer a drink service though the vehicle ferry has more options and a dining area to relax and enjoy the crossing. There are crossings throughout the day and night and generally leave every 90 minutes.

Be sure to check out Red Funnel’s website for the latest ferry timetable.

Portsmouth to Fishbourne/Ryde

An alternative route for visitors planning to head across the Solent to the Isle of Wight is via Portsmouth. Fishbourne and Ryde are both destinations on the island that you can reach directly from Portsmouth and the reality is that either is a viable option depending on where you plan on spending time while on the island.

Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower in March 2012

Portsmouth is one of the many historic coastal cities in England so you would be advised to spend some time here exploring before heading across to the Isle of Wight. One of Britain’s tallest towers outside of London is located here, the Spinnaker Tower, and offers stunning views across the Solent and city from the observation deck.

HMS-Victory - panoramio

Charles Dickens was a popular figure who walked the streets of Portsmouth during his literary heyday in search of his boyhood home and it’s no surprise to hear that today, this house on Old Commercial Road is easily identifiable. Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, the HMS Victory is housed in Portsmouth so be sure to visit here before hopping on the Wightlink ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Lymington to Yarmouth

If you would rather get across to the Isle of Wight in the shortest time possible, Lymington will likely be your preferred port given that you can make the crossing in only 35 minutes.

Lymington Harbour 2

Wightlink also services this port and although it may not have the glamor as Southampton or Portsmouth, it is certainly a viable choice given that it offers the shortest ferry route.

The charming market town and yacht haven of Lymington in the New Forest

Gorgeous coastal walks and strolling around the historic market town are certainly appealing attractions of Lymington, especially if you prefer to make the crossing from the quietest of the three ports.

While Southampton and Portsmouth are cities with a plethora of attractions worth visiting prior to boarding your ferry, Lymington is a more relaxing seaside town that will offer a myriad of beautiful natural attractions along this coastline.

Summary

Three different ports, one gorgeous destination waiting for you! The Isle of Wight is worth visiting from any of these ports and either Red Funnel or Wightlink offer an awesome ferry service that will enable visitors to enjoy the Solent crossing before arriving on the island that is frequently left under the radar around England.

how to get to the isle of wight

Regardless of how you choose to make the crossing to the Isle of Wight, we encourage you to visit the island so that you can experience the beauty on offer here.

Car ferries are a great way to allow you to take your own vehicle at an affordable price. I have experienced the Isle of Wight without a car so even if you hop across as a passenger on the ferry, the public transportation on the island offers visitors the opportunity to explore everywhere.

Have you visited the Isle of Wight previously? What are your experiences using car ferries?

How to Drive the Rock and Roll Highway in One Day

Arkansas may be famous for being home to the Razorbacks, Walmart, and Bill Clinton but did you know that a small Arkansan town was the site of a Beatles visit in 1964? “The Natural State” was actually a popular spot for musicians to play in local bars and nightclubs before going on to greater things in nearby cities such as Memphis and Nashville. Dubbed as the Rock and Roll Highway, a stretch of 111 miles from Bald Knob to Corning, this route is home to a number of iconic landmarks that create such a historic drive.

rock and roll highway

Where is the Rock and Roll Highway?

If you are going to be a true ‘rockabilly’ along US Highway 67 you better learn how to appreciate the heart of “rock ‘n’ roll” and head on down from the ‘hills’ of Arkansas and drive this iconic road.

rock and roll highway 67

Passing through a number of smaller towns, Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway is an interesting drive that you can easily experience in one day. Much of the drive is along open roads with very little to see but there are a few spots that offer an opportunity to appreciate the history in this part of Arkansas.

rock and roll highway 67

We actually started our route in Walnut Ridge given that it is the closest spot from our hometown of Jonesboro. In reality, this is not the ideal starting point as this is located in the heart of Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway.

corning arkansas

We recommend starting at either Corning (if you are heading south from Missouri) or Bald Knob (if you are heading north from Little Rock) to fully experience the route that Elvis or another budding rockstar would have taken.

The Beatles in Walnut Ridge

For a brief few moments, Walnut Ridge was transformed from a small town in Arkansas to a global hot-spot as the Beatles landed here en route from once concert to another. On September 18, 1964, the Beatles finished a concert in Dallas, Texas and immediately boarded a plane destined for a retreat in Missouri prior to their final concert in New York City.

walnut ridge arkansas

Walnut Ridge Airport was a training facility during World War II and its ability to handle large aircraft made this a perfect connection point for the Beatles to board a smaller plane to reach Missouri.

beatles in walnut ridge

Of course, this was a secret landing and just after midnight the Beatles left their large aircraft in Walnut Ridge. But given the scarcity of landings in Walnut Ridge at night, a few individuals made their way to the runway and immediately gasped as they recognized the infamous quartet.

walnut ridge arkansas

The rest of the weekend was spent trying to figure out when the Beatles would make their return trip to Walnut Ridge to board their plane for New York. A large gathering was rewarded when a small plane arrived with John Lennon and Ringo Starr on board.

rock n roll highway

What the Walnut Ridge locals didn’t realize was that Paul McCartney and George Harrison had already arrived about an hour earlier and were sat in a truck watching the spectacle.

walnut ridge airport

Today, the airfield is famous for having an old Southwest Airlines plane transformed into a restaurant which is a unique experience for visitors. Unfortunately, we visited on a Sunday when the restaurant was closed but hopefully, we will have an opportunity to visit in the future and sample the cuisine here.

beatles on the ridge

For many of the Walnut Ridge fans, it was their only chance to see the Beatles in person. To this day, it is a huge claim to fame for this small Arkansan town and it’s no surprise as you leave Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway that there is an intersection devoted to Abbey Road.

abbey road in walnut ridge arkansas

We enjoyed exploring the memorial and looking at the various stores that have been renamed to represent the Beatles landing here, even though it was only for a few moments.

walnut ridge beatles

But it’s not just the Beatles that have made their mark in Walnut Ridge. In fact, the town has constructed a gorgeous memorial known as the Walnut Ridge Guitar Walk located close to the Amtrak train station in Cavenaugh Park.

cavenaugh park walnut ridge

It is designed in the shape of an electric guitar and this colorful walkway has a number of stations with recordings devoted to iconic musicians that shaped the rock and roll era.

walnut ridge guitar walk

Country artists such as Johnny Cash are featured here so this is a great opportunity to learn a little more about your favorite artist, especially before they became the famous musician that we all know them as today.

Pocahontas

A short drive north of Walnut Ridge is another important town on the Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway. Pocahontas is home to the infamous Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway 67 Inn where legendary musicians such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis among others have both stayed and performed.

rock and roll highway 67 inn

Pocahontas may not have the same history as nearby Walnut Ridge but today, it is home to the Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway 67 music festival that takes place annually to celebrate the history that has occurred along this very route.

pocahontas arkansas

The festival is held in historic downtown Pocahontas which is actually a pretty cool area to walk around.

randolph courthouse pocahontas

The Randolph County courthouse is a key focal point in the heart of downtown along with a veteran memorial dedicated to those lives that were lost in World War I, World War II and Vietnam War.

pocahontas arkansas

Located just outside of Pocahontas along Rock and Roll Highway is an iconic radio station that played an important role in the development in Elvis’ success. Perhaps this is Pocahontas’ claim to fame!

veterans war memorials in pocahontas

In the mid-1950s, after Elvis finally had some success at Sun Studio in Memphis, he made his way along Highway 67 and stopped at the KPOC radio station. After meeting local KPOC announcer Bill Nicholson, they agreed to play one of Elvis’ records on the local station. Nicholson described a young Presley as follows

He was a shy, polite young man

Although this one radio station didn’t necessarily make or break Elvis, it certainly helped get his name out to a much wider audience.

rock and roll highway in arkansas

Other Landmarks Along Highway 67

Whether you choose to drive the full 111 miles or alternatively visit just a couple of the iconic landmarks along Highway 67, you will likely want to experience Bald Knob, Arkansas simply because of the name. Bald Knob was named as such from a prominent ridge that served as a landmark to pioneers exploring the region, but it’s no surprise to hear that this town is frequently on lists of unusual town names around the nation.

who dat's in bald knob

Restaurants such as Who Dat’s, serving delicious cajun cuisine and the Bulldog restaurant are both attractive options for visitors driving along Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway. The vibrant colors of the veteran remembrance mural is another landmark that you should experience if you plan on spending a little time in Bald Knob.

veterans mural in bald knob

Meanwhile, towns such as Swifton and Corning are other alternatives along Highway 67 though apart from a couple of chain restaurants, there is not likely to be much that inspires you to spend time exploring here.

swifton arkansas

Newport, Arkansas is home to the official Rock and Roll Highway 67 Museum and provides more detailed history on everything you can expect to see on this route (alternatively, you can take our word that everything highlighted in this post are the main spots you cannot afford to miss).

rock and roll highway 67 museum

Summary

Even if you are not a fan of rock and roll music, taking a ride down memory lane and visiting some iconic spots where music legends performed is certainly a rewarding experience.

From Elvis to Johnny Cash, Arkansas’ Rock ‘N’ Roll Highway has been privileged to see a variety of music legends, so to be able to spend some time learning about this history is a memory we will both cherish.

Best Things to Do in Strasbourg in Under 24 Hours

2

Exploring any city in 24 hours or less is a challenge especially when you are looking forward to experiencing everything there is to see. En route from Zurich to Luxembourg, we decided to take some time in the French city of Strasbourg and explore a destination other than Paris, the only location we had experienced in France prior to this trip. After spending just a few hours here, we want to share what we consider as the best things to do in Strasbourg.

strasbourg france

Where is Strasbourg?

When you think about France, 99.9% of responses are going to be associated with a Parisian culture or typical landmark in the French capital, but what about the rest of this gorgeous country?

Whether you are reading a detailed French travel guide or spontaneously picking a hidden gem, France is home to a myriad of gorgeous destinations. Located in the Alsace region of France, Strasbourg is perfectly located on the German/French border and just a short distance from both Switzerland and Luxembourg.

The Rhine River winds its way through the heart of Strasbourg and both the architecture and culture is represented by the German-French influence. We will discuss more of this later but the strategic location of Strasbourg is one of the reasons why it is the home seat of the European Parliament.

Best Things to Do in Strasbourg

A towering cathedral, uniquely gorgeous architecture, historic cobblestoned streets and quirky yet delightful restaurants all combine to create the beautiful city of Strasbourg. There is nothing quite like arriving in Strasbourg’s Central Station (Gare de Strasbourg) and beginning your self-guided walking tour of the city knowing that you can experience much of this city on foot and within a few hours.

best things to do in strasbourg

We spent about four hours here just walking around the historic city and really enjoyed our time here. Of course, we didn’t have time to experience everything in Strasbourg but we certainly made the most of our time in the Alsace region of France before heading onwards to Luxembourg City. You will immediately notice that Strasbourg is a very walkable city and honestly, I couldn’t imagine experiencing this part of France in any other way.

strasbourg france

Let’s take a look at the route we took and some of the best things to do in Strasbourg that we experienced along the way.

Strasbourg Cathedral

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg is one of the most breathtaking cathedrals throughout France and possibly Europe. It is the focal point of Strasbourg and located in the heart of the old town district of the city.

When Paul Claudel referred to this cathedral as follows, he was clearly emphasizing the beauty of this gorgeous architectural design.

Cathedrale of Notre Dame is like a pinky-red angel hovering over the city

The history of the Strasbourg Cathedral dates back to the early 11th century when this Romanesque style cathedral was originally constructed in 1015. As with many historic European cathedrals, this was destroyed shortly after due to a fire and the present day design was completed in 1284.

One of the truly breathtaking aspects of this church is the towering spire that stands proudly above Strasbourg at over 470 feet. In fact, until 1874, it was listed as the world’s tallest building and today stands as the sixth tallest church in the world.

A gorgeous astronomical clock is located inside the southern part of the cathedral and is a true sight to behold. The animated figures that are transformed at various hours of the day make this a popular attraction for visitors, much like the historical astronomical clock in the Old Town Square of Prague.

Whether you take the time to go inside the church and spend a few Euros to experience the gorgeous interior or just appreciate the beauty from the outside, this is one of the most spectacular sights in Strasbourg. Given that this was one of the first attractions we saw during our tour of the city, it certainly reflected a great first impression.

Grande Île

Strasbourg Cathedral is located on the Grande Île (Grand Island) which is accessed after you cross the Ill River. It is referred to as the Grand Island because it is completely surrounded by water, either by the river or the Canal du Faux-Rempert.

In 1988, this particular area was accredited as a UNESCO World Heritage Site primarily because of the gorgeous medieval architecture that exemplifies this type of historic city.

A variety of smaller cathedrals can be found on Grande Île along with some of Strasbourg’s finest shopping streets.

From souvenir shops by Strasbourg Cathedral to high-end, luxury boutique shops, Strasbourg is a retail therapist’s paradise.

While the females in your life head into these chic shops, perhaps you will be inspired by the thought of grabbing a coffee at one of the quaint cafes or maybe something a little stronger at the quirky bars located in the heart of the Old Town district.

We had an awesome time just walking around this island though of course as you explore the fine architecture and hidden gems around every street corner, you never quite know what you may stumble across next.

Barrage Vauban

The Vauban Dam, locally known as the Barrage Vauban, is a bridge and river defense that dates back to the 17th century when it was originally constructed. The original design was more than just a designated lock in the river system around Strasbourg, rather it was part of the fortifications that surrounded the medieval quarters of the city.

barrage vauban strasbourg

The dam stretched the full width of the Ill River and was designed in a way that allowed the southern half of the city to be completely flooded should an attack take place. Of course, today the Vauban Dam is more of an aesthetically pleasing landmark for visitors to the city. The stunning sculptures and intricate details that make up this dam, in addition to the grass terrace on top, make this one of the most iconic landmarks throughout Strasbourg.

From the top of the terrace, this provides stunning panoramic views across the Grande Île and beyond. Admission inside the dam is free for visitors who want a closer look but the most appealing aspect of this landmark is the architectural brilliance that makes this such an attractive historic icon of Strasbourg.

La Petite France

As we walked around the Grande Île, we approached an area of the city which was even more unique than the rest.

strasbourg france

Unknowingly, we had arrived in the historical quarter of La Petite France but we soon realized that we were in a pretty special part of the city.

strasbourg la petite france

The Rue des Dentelles is one of the most iconic streets running through this district, primarily because of its quirkiness.

But despite this being one of the narrowest streets, the architecture that encloses visitors that stroll along the street make this a memorable experience and one that you cannot afford to miss.

medieval architecture in strasbourg

This historic quarter is famous for the various weirs and locks that cross the Ill River. Combined with the medieval style buildings that reminded us of the distinctive architecture along the Chester Rows in England, this was certainly one of our favorite parts of Strasbourg.

The white timber-framed buildings are a beautiful reflection on the city’s style and along with the ancient canals it is very apparent that the German Empire had a major influence on the development of this region.

Summary

Our first impression of the Alsace region of France was nothing but awesome. Even spending just a few hours in the city of Strasbourg, this was enough to reassure us that a return visit to this part of the country is a must.

things to do in strasbourg

The historic museum in Strasbourg is a popular spot for those interested in learning more about the city’s rich history but due to time constraints we were not able to experience this aside from a passing visit.

I am a huge fan of unique architecture and Strasbourg is full of different designs that make you awe-inspired as you walk along the banks of the Ill River. Strasbourg Cathedral is one of the most beautiful cathedrals throughout Europe, so this is one landmark you will want to miss. However, simply getting out and strolling around is the best way to experience our recommended things to do in Strasbourg.

How to Make the Most of 24 Hours in Stockholm

15

Scandinavia has always been a part of Europe that has intrigued me and somewhere that I have wanted to visit for a long time. Having previously visited Copenhagen in Denmark and enjoyed the Danish culture, we were excited to head deeper into Scandinavia and experience the beautiful nation of Sweden. What better place to start than the capital city of Stockholm! We want to share a few of our ideas based on our experiences of how to make the most of spending 24 hours in Stockholm.

The Stockholm Stereotype

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you think about Sweden or specifically Stockholm? Perhaps the stereotype that all Swedes are blonde (by the way that is false!), Sweden is an extremely expensive country to visit (depending on where you are visiting from, that could be true!) or the infamous IKEA multi-national corporation. I personally think that all these stereotypes are legitimate, minus the blonde assumption but we should look at what exactly attracts visitors to Sweden.

Modernity meets tranquility. Trend-setting restaurants and vibrant nightclubs next to idyllic archipelago.

The local tourism board, Visit Stockholm, summarizes with the above quote exactly what attracted us to this part of the world. Ok, so maybe we are not active party seekers in nightclubs but the diverse culture and the vibrant blend of modernism along with the tranquil ‘Gamla Stan’ are attractive reasons why Stockholm is so popular.

24 Hours in Stockholm – A Possible Itinerary

We spent a little over 24 hours in Stockholm staying at the beautiful Scandic Grand Central Hotel which is in the perfect location to explore the city. We want to share an itinerary of how to best spend your time in and around the city.

stockholm card

We had the opportunity to use the Stockholm Card which unfortunately has now been discontinued, but this was a great way to check out some of the top attractions. Let’s take a look at what we recommend seeing in Stockholm in only one day.

  • Stockholm City Hall
  • Riddarholm Church
  • Gamla Stan
  • SkyView Observatory
  • Vasa Museum

Stockholm City Hall

Our self-guided tour of Stockholm started in the heart of the city, just a short walk from the Central Station at the Stockholm City Hall. Dating back to 1923, the 348 feet tower is an iconic part of Stockholm and one of the tallest buildings in Scandinavia.

stockholm city hall

What is the Stockholm City Hall? Apart from being one of the most famous buildings in Sweden, it is the location for grand ceremonial celebrations such as the Nobel Prize banquet that is held every year in December. From high-profile, elaborate wedding celebrations to municipal council events, the City Hall is a perfect venue for a wide variety of functions.

24 hours in stockholm sweden

Guided tours are the only way to explore the interior of Stockholm’s City Hall. A public tour is available daily for 100 Swedish Krona and scheduled on the hour. Through the summer months, additional tours are made available every half hour.

stockholm city hall

City Hall is filled with gorgeous architecture and ornate decorations that combine to make the perfect venue for the myriad of celebrations that take place here. As we stood in the iconic ‘Blue Hall’ on the ground floor, our tour guide painted a picture of how the Nobel Prize banquet takes place and how the main guests would gracefully stride down the gorgeous staircase and make their entrance while everyone else was already seated.

blue hall in city hall stockholm

Please bear in mind that the Blue Hall is a decent sized room, but with over 1300 guests here each Nobel Banquet including the Swedish Royal Family, it certainly gets a little crowded.

blue hall in city hall

The hall was originally designed to be painted blue but architect Ragnar Östberg, had a change of heart when he saw the red brick that was used to construct the hall and opted for this design instead. However, the ‘Blue Hall’ name was already being used so this immediately stuck!

municipal court city hall

The tour continued throughout the gorgeous building, passing through the area where the municipal council meets and into the Golden Hall which is the ultimate room for elaborate and ornate design.

The walls are decorated with a variety of beautiful mosaics and it is no surprise to hear that the ball after the Nobel Banquet is held here.

city hall stockholm

As we left City Hall, we couldn’t help but admire the stunning views across the river. Stockholm may not be the first city you think about exploring when heading to Europe, but it quickly became one of our favorites after this trip.

Riddarholm Church

A short walk from City Hall saw us cross over to the island of Riddarholmen which is the location of the historic Riddarholm Church. This is one of the most famous churches in Stockholm, primarily because it is the burial church for Swedish monarchs dating back to the 13th century when it was first opened.

riddarholmen church

It was initially opened as a monastery but after the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, it closed and shortly after reopened as a Protestant church. The architecture of this church is typical of many European parishes, with the most impressive feature being the cast iron spire that dates back to the mid 19th century.

riddarholm church stockholm

Unfortunately, the church is today only used for burial and commemorative purposes rather than for congregations. It is also closed between November and May which prevented us from exploring the inside but just knowing the history behind this church made this an attractive landmark to experience while heading towards the Gamla Stan neighborhood of Stockholm.

Gamla Stan

If you love medieval history, stereotypical European style streets, gorgeous architecture and some fine cuisine we have the perfect spot in the heart of Stockholm.

Riddarhuset

The Old Town locally referred to as Gamla Stan, is a great part of the city to explore on foot and provides a true modern day reflection on Stockholm’s rich history dating back to the mid 13th century.

gamla stan stockholm

The narrow cobblestone streets are one of the key aspects to providing Gamla Stan with the unique character that we see today. We thoroughly enjoyed our time wandering around the beautiful medieval quarters and visiting iconic landmarks such as the stunning Stockholm Cathedral.

gamla stan stockholm

The quaint designs of the architecture throughout Gamla Stan combined with the colorful facades that seem to be stereotypical of historic Scandinavian towns, makes this a perfect location to spend a couple of hours.

Whether you are ready to collect a local souvenir or two, it is unsurprising to hear that this is probably the best area of Stockholm to find a bargain.

24 hours in stockholm

Local stores offer typical home-made Swedish merchandise but perhaps the most intriguing aspect about Gamla Stan is the myriad of restaurants and cafes waiting to entice you through their doors.

24 hours in stockholm

The Royal Palace of Stockholm is also located in the Gamla Stan district and guided tours are available on certain days. Unfortunately it was closed when we visited but walking around the grounds is enough to justify wanting a return visit here to explore further.

SkyView Observatory

One of the most impressive aspects of Stockholm is the blend of historical and modern architecture throughout the city. After spending some time exploring Gamla Stan, we were ready to see of modern Stockholm and what better place to start than the SkyView Observatory. This is part of a sporting complex that is a revolutionary venue for events ranging from soccer to hockey among other popular activities in Sweden.

skyview observatory stockholm

The Ericsson Globe is the world’s largest spherical building and the SkyView experience is located on the side as you are transported from the base to the summit in pods. These pods offer stunning panoramic views around Stockholm.

Visitors can pay 150 Swedish Krona to experience a short ride to the top and although the journey is over pretty quickly, the views are well worth the admission fee alone.

A short video describing the technologies and modern infrastructure around this complex is shown to visitors prior to entering the pods, but if you love beautiful panoramic scenes then this is definitely an attraction you should consider adding to your Stockholm itinerary.

Vasa Museum

We enjoy visiting museums although I have to admit that many art and cultural museums tend to be very similar. Unless you are an aficionado of that particular domain, to put it mildly, they can be a little boring.

24 hours in stockholm

I can honestly admit in hindsight that you should never judge museums collectively because the Vasa Museum was an amazing experience, and unlike any other museum that we have previously visited!

vasa museum

In 1628, the Vasa ship capsized and sank in Stockholm. Over 300 years later, this vessel was salvaged and today it is the world’s only 17th-century ship on display that has been recovered from the seabed.

vasa museum stockholm

From human remains that were recovered during the salvage process to the immaculate restoration process of the original Vasa ship, the museum today holds many artifacts and images depicting the chain of events.

vasa museum in stockholm

Walking around the museum is an unbelievable experience. There are several levels where you can view from the Vasa from a variety of angles while at the same time learning about the rich history and timeline that saw the Vasa quickly go from the most powerful vessel in the Baltic to a destroyed wreck at the bottom of the sea.

24 hours in stockholm

I was particularly interested in learning more about the condition of the Vasa. Given that this vessel is almost 400 years old, it is in remarkably good condition. However, it is noticeable that the wood is deteriorating with time.

vasa museum in stockholm

Scientists and researchers are constantly working to look for ways to preserve the wood. Hopefully, they will succeed because it would be a real shame to see the Vasa disappear.

Summary

Spending only 24 hours in any city around the world is a challenging prospect but one that we love to experience. Stockholm is a beautiful city, filled with rich history depicted through architecture, local culture and of course, museums such as the Vasa Museum.

With so much to see and experience, I strongly encourage you to spend more than 24 hours in Stockholm but if you have time constraints, why not follow our recommended itinerary and visit some of the aforementioned attractions – you won’t regret it!
