Best Coffee In New York City

Before going any further, I want to emphasize that this post is NOT the ultimate guide to every coffee shop in New York City. We all know the size of NYC and when it comes to coffee shops, well locals and visitors alike are spoiled for choice. But given that we have experienced some awesome local spots, we figured it was time to put together an eclectic guide to some of our favorites.

Again, to reiterate, this is not an exhaustive list of places where you can find coffee when you next travel to Manhattan or any of the surrounding boroughs. It will however, give you an insight into a few options that you won’t regret visiting should you follow our advice.

The Bean

If you are looking for a typical New York City coffee shop that oozes everything there is to love about the Big Apple, look no further than The Bean. With several locations scattered across Manhattan and Brooklyn, The Bean is the perfect place to head to hang out with your friends or enjoy a relaxing coffee before exploring all the iconic NYC attractions.

Exclusive signature drinks that epitomize the creativity of this coffee shop along with a full juice and smoothie bar ensures every visitor to The Bean has something they will enjoy.

One thing worth noting is the crazy naming convention of many of the drinks. But what an amazing marketing tactic because when it comes to grabbing your attention, they certainly work! The featured Acai Bowls have names such as “The Perch”, “The Snail”, and “The Rider” while those interested in the juice bar will contend with the likes of “Energizer”, “Fat Burner”, “Body Cleaner” et al.

While the sound of The Frozen Mona Lisa (espresso, ice and milk) or Nut’Ella’ Fitzgerald sounded pretty appealing, I opted for a caramel latte which was equally delicious.

Gumption Coffee

With such a diverse coffee scene to be found across the various boroughs in New York City, it made sound crazy that a successful coffee brand all the way from Sydney, Australia has ventured into the city to try and inspire folks to visit. This is exactly what Gumption Coffee has done since recently opening a location in the heart of Industry City, Brooklyn.

gumption coffee brooklyn

While taking a Brooklyn walking tour with New York Urban Adventures, we stumbled across this awesome, trendy coffee shop. The industrial vibe of the area epitomizes the style of Gumption Coffee but what really makes this coffeehouse stand out from their competitors is the intricacy and precision of the baristas brewing the perfect blend.

They understand that coffee is an art and when you taste coffee at Gumption, you can be sure that this has been perfectly manicured.

But even great coffee can be made better. (gumption coffee)

Trust me when I say, you can 100% tell the difference! I don’t generally like black coffee without any milk/cream but at Gumption, I actually enjoyed it. When you hear the philosophy of the owners is always seeking continuous improvement, you know you have found the perfect coffee shop…

Colson Patisserie

Let’s continue the theme of internationally inspired coffee shops that are leaving their mark on the New York City scene. If you have traveled to Belgium, you will know that their patisseries offering a selection of delicious pastries are to die for.

Our goal is to make every day a little sweeter and more delicious. (Colson Patisserie)

Well, thanks to Colson Patisserie, you no longer have to travel all the way Belgium as there is now an awesome spot in the heart of Brooklyn. Located in Industry City, Colson Patisserie is the perfect place to grab your favorite pastry while enjoying a latte, chai or even a decadent hot chocolate.

colson patisserie industry city

Regardless of whether you possess a sweet tooth, you cannot help but fall in love with the pastry offerings at Colson Patisserie. The signature Hubert the teddy bear financier cookie is undoubtedly the most popular choice among locals and visitors alike but honestly, you cannot go wrong with anything on this menu.

Sweet Moment

If you’re in search of the best latte art in the city, Sweet Moment in Little Italy is a haven for caffeine-fueled Instagrammers. With drinks and desserts as tasty as they are pretty, people come here for their cutesy colored beverages they call “creamart” and towering Bingsoos (shaved ice) creations although they do have more traditional coffee and café items like avocado toast and waffles for the breakfast purists.

For their signature drink series, you choose a base of milk tea or cold brew that is then topped with chocolate, matcha, red velvet, taro, or Thai cream and wait patiently to see what character they come up with. Swarming with photo-happy social media lovers, it’s not the best place to work or hang so snag a photo and be on your merry way.

Yorkafe

Yorkafe is a cute little coffee shop on 83rd street close to York Avenue on the Upper East Side. They make the best coffee especially the latte and cappuccinos. The sandwiches and pastries are freshly baked, tasty and reasonably priced. Their bagels are out of this world and perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. I especially like getting a couple of paninis and heading down to the beautiful Carl Schurz Park for a mini-picnic.

The coffee shop is owned by a Salvadorian family and the staff couldn’t be nicer. There is such a good vibe in this cozy little piece of our Upper East Side neighborhood.

Culture Espresso

In an area of the city that can be harder than most to find something to eat or drink that is not a chain, Culture Espresso is a rare gem. There are two locations in the Midtown area, one near Bryant Park and one near the 34th Street ACE stop on 36th Street.

The location near Bryant Park is best for picking up a coffee to go (and take it to the park if it is a nice day!) as it is a small and busy spot. The 36th Street location is bigger and great for a respite from a day of walking. Both locations have great drip coffee and espresso drinks.

The coffee is from Heart Coffee Roasters in Portland OR and they both serve the BEST chocolate chip cookies, they are often fresh from the oven and so so delicious.

Cha Cha Matcha

Are you dreaming of a trip to Japan without the expensive airline ticket? Don’t worry and take a trip to Cha Cha Matcha instead!

This trendy but friendly cafe specializes in making the signature Japanese drink, matcha, with a New York twist. In fact, the owners are so committed to perfecting their craft that they travel to Japan themselves to source the smoothest ceremonial grade matcha they can find!

cha cha matcha new york city

My favorite drink is the Coconut Matcha Latte, which has the perfect amount of sweet toasted coconut and smooth flavor, although you can’t go wrong here. The cafe also offers a seasonal menu (try the Pink Drink!) and light snacks like soft serve ice cream, croissants, dossants (doughnut croissants), banana bread, and more.

Whether you want to try a healthier coffee or just hang out with friends after a long day of work, Cha Cha Matcha has you covered.

Landmark Diner

One of the last original family-owned diners in Manhattan. The Landmark Diner has been operating since 1962 and has retained the old-school diner menu, bottomless coffee and bargain basement prices.

The food comes thick and fast with fluffy pancakes, delicious omelettes and traditional diner fare on their more than extensive menu. The coffee is of the filtered variety so don’t come looking for any single-origin style lattes. Instead, enjoy the comforting taste of home as the waitress ensures your cup is never empty.

The service is fast and efficient and tables turn over quickly if they are busy. But it is likely you will get a table or even a booth that you can spend a while in. On the edge of SoHo this is a rare find in an area that is becoming quickly gentrified.

Hi-Collar

Located in the East Village, Hi-Collar is a traditional Japanese coffee and tea house by day and sake bar during the evenings. The bar is narrow and deep with a row of stools and shelves decorated with lovely glasses and vessels.

During the daytime, the bar offers various preparation and types of coffee. You can choose from pour over, AeroPress and Siphon but also Japanese Iced coffee. They offer some Japanese-American breakfast options, light lunch fare, usually including some sandwiches, a pasta dish or two and a small selection of desserts.

At night, Hi-Collar flips itself over to interesting dishes, such as rice bowls, appetizers and with regards to beverages, the bar is primarily known for sake. It is a place where you can spend your night with friends sampling different tastes of sake.

The Grey Dog

The Grey Dog has several branches around town and they have a hip, laid-back atmosphere. There are often lines, but a host will approach you while you are waiting, point out a table that is for you and put a bandana on the table to show that it is taken. So, you have somewhere to sit as soon as you get to the counter.

You order at the front and get drinks served to you there, but if you order food, it is brought to your table. Cutlery and condiments are all on a side dresser for you get yourself. The coffee is good and has free refills – a rarity in NYC – and the food is simple, tasty and the servings are big.

The staff are all young, friendly and wear hats. I’m not sure why. The headwear varies from beanies to fedoras, but they all wear it. The Grey Dog has a relaxed downtown vibe perfect for coffee, brunch or a casual lunch.

Think Coffee

As I was making my way by foot – the best way to see New York City in my opinion – from Penn Station to the Highline, I was thinking I could desperately go for a good cup of coffee.

New York City delivered as it always does when I stumbled across Think Coffee in the meatpacking district. The first thing that caught my eye was their sign saying that their coffee empowers young women in Ethiopia. Nearly every purchase supports projects like housing reconstruction in Colombia, feminine hygiene in Ethiopia, or clean water access in Nicaragua.

Think Coffee is a local NYC chain with ten locations throughout the different neighborhoods (and they have several locations in Korea). This location is very large and has an amazing vibe making it perfect for setting up shop and getting some work done. They have plenty of food and drink options, including several plant-based milks.

Oslo Coffee Roasters

There are a lot of good coffee shops in New York, but they don’t all serve great coffee. That’s not the case at Oslo Coffee Roasters. Here, the coffee is the attraction.

oslo coffee roasters brooklyn

They start with premium beans from farmers who use ecologically and socially sustainable practices, roasted on site in small batches. Up front, they brew well-balanced espresso drinks and brewed coffees, teas (including Chai), and single-origin cold-brews. Pastries come from Roberta’s in Brooklyn.

Oslo celebrated their 15th year by opening a second Manhattan shop in 2018, to go along with two Brooklyn locations. We visited the original, on Roebling Street in Williamsburg. It’s a great coffee stop while exploring Brooklyn, but not the best place to get work done.

The owners keep it “old school” to encourage the social aspect of having coffee; no wi-fi, no plugs. At Oslo, you can focus on what’s important: coffee and friends.

Summary

It’s no surprise that there are a plethora of amazing coffee shops to be found in New York City. Whether you are in downtown Manhattan, nearby Brooklyn or any of the other NYC boroughs, you can be sure that there is an awesome coffee shop just around the corner.

Bologna to San Marino – How to Visit a Country in One Day

When you talk about visiting a country for only one day, the likelihood is that most people will think you are crazy or alternatively, they will suggest that you will see very little in such a short timeframe. However, when visiting some of the world’s smallest nations, this is when having less than 24 hours is perfectly fine to experience everything the country has to offer. We recently took a day trip from Bologna to San Marino to see what this mountainous microstate had to offer.

bologna to san marino day trip

Whether you are an admirer of historic European architecture or perhaps you prefer the breathtaking natural landscapes of the rural countryside, a visit to San Marino offers an eclectic blend of both these environments. San Marino may be small but it certainly epitomizes everything there is to love about Northern Italy while offering a unique perspective that makes it a country on its own.

san marino

Let’s take a look at how you can enjoy a day trip to this tiny nation and likely want to book a return trip in the not too distant future.

Where is San Marino?

Landlocked and surrounded by Italy, San Marino is a country (that’s right, a nation just like it’s Italian counterpart!) that oozes natural beauty, primarily because of its location on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains.

where is san marino

If you are staying in the nearby coastal city of Rimini, access to San Marino is easy as you can hop on the local bus and explore this beautiful country. But the beauty of San Marino is that you can access this nation from a variety of other Italian cities. We stayed in the nearby city of Bologna and San Marino is only a short train journey and bus ride away.

bologna to san marino

The topographical landscape of San Marino is such that the mountain range makes this a challenging hike to the summit. But once you reach the top…it’s definitely worth it! More on this later but when you are at the summit, the breathtaking panoramic landscapes overlooking the Adriatic Sea that is a mere 6 miles away is amazing along with the natural Italian surroundings.

Bologna to San Marino

As I mentioned, we enjoyed a day trip to San Marino after experiencing an awesome 48 hours exploring Bologna in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. After experiencing the best things to do in Bologna, you could be forgiven for thinking that a day trip to San Marino would not be particularly intriguing. Please don’t let this stop you because it’s well worth the effort.

bologna to rimini train

The first step is to hop on the train from Bologna to Rimini. This should take less than one hour and there are several trains available. Whether you take an “express” or “local” train is entirely your preference but regardless of this, the route is simple and quick.

bonelli bus rimini to san marino

When you arrive at Rimini train station, you need to purchase tickets for the Bonelli Bus 72 that runs to San Marino. There is a pre-determined schedule of buses that run at regular intervals and for only 10 Euros, you can get a return ticket to explore this country.

Tickets are available for purchase inside the local tourism office located inside the train station. This is also a great place to leave your luggage but be warned, if you are only planning a day trip, be prepared to return to Rimini before the office closes (for us it was around 6:00PM).

rimini to san marino bus

The journey from Rimini to San Marino takes around 45-50 minutes dependent on traffic. The picturesque route winds through San Marino with several stops along the way but it’s the final stop once you reach the summit where you will want to leave the bus before setting off on foot to explore the best things to do in the country.

Best Things to Do in San Marino

I want to start with a word of warning before getting into the best things to do in San Marino – be prepared for quite the hike! It’s a pretty steep climb to the very top of San Marino but trust me when I say, the view is well worth the effort.

explore san marino

But the beauty of San Marino’s historic capital is (unsurprisingly the same name as the country, though technically the country is “Republic of San Marino”) that there are plenty of things to explore all the way to the very top. San Marino may be Europe’s smallest nation after Vatican City and Monaco but don’t let this fool you as there are plenty of things here to keep you occupied.

best things to do in san marino

Let’s take a look at some of the best things to experience during your visit, all of which can be enjoyed in one day even if you don’t plan an overnight stay in San Marino.

San Marino’s Three Towers

San Marino is home to three iconic towers known as the “pinnacles” of the country and so it’s no surprise that these are incredibly popular landmarks that are worth exploring. Guaita, Cesta and the Montale Tower stand proudly overlooking the San Marino nation and each one has a unique history that makes it worthwhile to visit.

san marino towers

The “first tower” known as Rocca Guaita dates back to the 10th-century when it was first constructed, though it was rebuilt and renovated in the 15th-century. This was a popular spot among locals to find refuge during sieges but it was also used as a prison up until 1970!

rocca guaita tower

The “second tower”, located on the highest point of Mount Titano (standing at 756 meters high) is known as Cesta Castle. This is a newer tower, built in the 11th century but similar to the Rocca Guaita with a pentagonal floor plan.

san marino

The historical use of this tower is much the same as the first tower but today, it houses the Museum of Archaic Arms, containing over 530 pieces that date back to various periods from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th-century.

Tickets are available at an affordable price (around 7 Euros) and give visitors access to both Rocca Guaita and Cesta Castle.

san marino landscape

The “third tower”, known as Montale, is the newest and smallest of the three structures. This tower was positioned strategically because despite its size, is perfectly situated as a lookout tower. This is the only one of the three towers that is not open to the public.

Basilica de San Marino

When it comes to gorgeous architecture, San Marino’s “basilica” is perhaps the most spectacular of all the structures scattered across this country. The Basilica di San Marino is a Catholic church that is relatively new given that the structure you see today was completed in 1836. However, this has been the site of a church since the 4th-century.

basilica de san marino

The interior of the basilica is equally spectacular, the most noticeable aspect is the intricate details that can be seen on the three naves supported by sixteen Corinthian columns.

san marino basilica

But regardless of whether you choose to step inside this house of worship, you cannot help but admire the spectacular architectural masterpiece from the outside. This is the perfect spot to take a few minutes and relax after walking up through the medieval city. There is plenty to more to see and San Marino’s inherent beauty is just starting!

Wander the Historic Streets

The moment you step off the bus from Rimini in the heart of San Marino’s historic old city, you cannot help but fall in love with this place. The winding streets are a challenging hike but the effort is definitely worthwhile.

san marino city

Take some time to admire the architecture scattered alongside the streets while occasionally popping inside the stores to be greeted by a friendly welcome, typical of the San Marino locals.

things to do in san marino

Whether you are an avid shopper or simply prefer to window shop, San Marino is a place you can find some real gems of souvenirs (or early birthday/Christmas gifts for loved ones in your family).

san marino shops

As you meander through the maze of medieval streets, this is the perfect opportunity to experience the local cuisine. Not only will you find authentic, Italian-inspired local cafes but a number of other options are available including a “London Pub” which will satisfy all of your British cuisine cravings!

Funivia di San Marino

For those of you that want to connect between the historical old town with Borgo Maggiore located in the foothills, the San Marino funicular is a great way to travel between both locations. The two minute journey not only makes it easily accessible between both spots, it also offers spectacular panoramic scenes across the Adriatic Sea.

san marino cable car

The Funivia di San Marino is an aerial cable car that dates back to 1959 when it was originally constructed. It has been modernized on a couple of occasions, most recently in 2017 and today, is undoubtedly the number one public transportation method for locals and visitors alike to connect between Borgo Maggiore and the historic city.

san marino funicular

Tickets are available as either one-way or return trips and for only 4.50 Euros, you can enjoy a leisurely return journey with this cable car. When you stand at the top by the upper station in the city of San Marino and peer over the edge of the mountain, it really puts into perspective the benefit of having this cable car.

Cava dei Balestrieri

The Cava dei Balestrieri, or “Crossbowmen’s Quarry” is another unique and iconic landmark in San Marino.

cava dei balestrieri

After heading inside the local tourism office to grab an official stamp inside your passport (costs 5 Euros but actually looks pretty awesome in comparison to the traditional passport stamps you receive at airports), head down to the “quarry” to enjoy this historic area.

san marino tourism office

Today, this landmark is used for crossbow shooters to test their skills and is also home to a variety of medieval sporting event reenactments. The quarry itself was artistically crafted out of the rock and is also home to the annual Crossbowmen’s Palio event that takes place every September as part of San Marino’s national holiday.

best things to see in san marino

Summary

San Marino is a country that deserves to be on more people’s radar, particularly if you are visiting the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It’s definitely worth taking a day trip from Bologna or surrounding areas because in addition to the gorgeous architecture throughout the country, the panoramic landscapes across the region are breathtaking.

explore san marino

If you visit many of the “microstate” countries in Europe such as Vatican City, Liechtenstein, Andorra or Monaco, it’s feasible that you may visit once and never go back. But although San Marino would fall into this category due to it’s size, I would argue this is a nation you would want to return to…I know we do!!

Brooklyn Walking Tour – How to Enjoy the Best of Industry City

When you think about New York City, it’s likely that your first thoughts will head towards the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s busiest cities. Or perhaps you will think about the iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty. But we want you to take a moment to contemplate taking a trip to New York City without experiencing any of this. Sounds a little crazy right? Don’t worry folks, welcome to the borough of Brooklyn! Join us on an adventure as we experienced a Brooklyn walking tour through an area known as “Industry City” and you will find out exactly why a NYC trip can involve a relaxing experience.

industry city walking tour

It’s worth noting before we delve into the walking tour itself that we had no idea just how big of a borough Brooklyn actually is. Unfortunately, we followed the same philosophy as many others by visiting New York City on numerous occasions without giving too much of heading across the Hudson River to explore Brooklyn.

brooklyn walking tour

Sure, we took a stroll across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and briefly explored the DUMBO area of the borough but the reality is, we hadn’t really experienced the heart and soul of this part of NYC. Having visited the Big Apple on numerous occasions, it was time to change all of the above. Enter New York City Urban Adventures!

New York City Urban Adventures

When we heard about the awesome walking tour offered by New York City Urban Adventures to experience a part of Brooklyn we honestly had never heard of, we jumped at the chance to experience something new.

Urban Adventures are for those who want to get away from the tourist crowds and really connect with a city, with a local by their side. (NYC Urban adventures)

New York City Urban Adventures started our as “Urban Oyster Tours” but later became part of the global Urban Adventures brand. If you are interested in learning more about the various walking tours available across the globe after reading this post, there are plenty of options that will likely spark some interest.

urban adventures walking tour brooklyn

Here are some interesting statistics on the Urban Adventures brand (these are always subject to change but these are valid at the time of publication):

  • 96 countries
  • 152 cities
  • 1472 local guides
  • 1273 unique itineraries
  • And most importantly….100% FUN & RESPONSIBLE!

These statistics are only going in one directions…up! As Urban Adventures grows, it’s opening up the possibility of experiencing amazing “hidden gems” in diverse cities across the globe. And that is why we immediately fell in love with New York City Urban Adventures because they introduced us to a part of Brooklyn that we would likely have never found before.

brooklyn walking tour nyc

Let’s take a look at why the next time you visit NYC, you should consider adding the “Made In NY: Industry City Brooklyn” by New York City Urban Adventures to your itinerary. We don’t think you will regret it and in fact, it may change your whole perspective on NYC in general!

Brooklyn Walking Tour: Industry City

The northwest corner of 4th Avenue and 36th Street…this was our meeting point for the start of our Made In NY: Industry City Brooklyn walking tour. If you are staying in the heart of Manhattan, it will likely take anywhere from 45-60 minutes to reach the subway stop at 36th street (take the D/N/R line). The tour was scheduled to last three hours starting at 10AM.

brooklyn new york city

After waiting for about 15 minutes, our friendly tour guide John approached us and gave us a quick introduction, quickly letting us know that we were now in his neck of the woods given that he is a local of Brooklyn.

Immediately we knew this was going to be an informative tour because John was well-equipped to provide “insider” information on the history of this area and best things to do here during and after the tour.

brooklyn tour

I think one of the benefits of taking any walking tour is that you have the opportunity to interact with fellow members of your tour but most importantly, with your tour guide. Utilize the time you are with them and pick their brains because they will likely have some awesome recommendations that you would never find in a guidebook.

History of Bush Terminal

As we headed along 36th street, our guide started sharing a brief history of the neighborhood we would be exploring. He also put the area into context with regards to the overall size of Brooklyn – you don’t realize just how big this borough is, again reiterating a need to get outside of Manhattan and explore other boroughs when visiting New York City.

industry city warehouses

Industry City, formerly known as Bush Terminal, was once a thriving neighborhood for manufacturing given the close proximity to the Hudson River.

The complex was originally managed by the Bush Terminal Company, founded by Irving T. Bush. The history of this development dates back to the 1890s when Bush first developed the series of warehouses that we see today.

bush terminal brooklyn

Unfortunately, as with many manufacturing areas across the United States, Industry City started to see a major decline during the 1960s. Major corporations such as Topps Baseball Card company that once thrived here, decided to close their doors or move to other locations. For 40 years, Industry City suffered and it wasn’t until the 21st century that this area saw any sign of change.

Welcome to Industry City

In 2013 this all changed. A new ownership group decided to invest in Industry City and begin to redevelop this. Not only did they transform this declining area, they leased out over 2 million square feet of space for companies that have started moving into this domain.

Over 2,000 jobs have been created and today, as you walk around Industry City, you cannot help but appreciate how this area has been transformed.

The beauty of Industry City’s transformation is that there is a real modern vs traditionalist vibe throughout the area.

In addition to a number of trendy, vibrant restaurants and boutique establishments that have moved into Industry City, the “traditional” woodwork shops and other manufacturing companies that have survived the mass decline can still be found here.

Industry City offers a diverse blend of attractions to keep all of the family occupied. Whether you are intrigued by the thought of heading into the Game Room or perhaps visiting the Japanese Village, this area of Brooklyn is certainly going to inspire you to make a return visit.

One of the really unique and relaxing areas to visit is the “Hygge House”. This Scandinavian inspired “teepee” or tent is the perfect place to visit on a chilly New York day to lounge in the relaxing chairs while taking in the soothing atmosphere.

Best Places to Eat and Drink

As you stroll around the various warehouses that collectively make up Industry City, you will likely want to indulge in some of the awesome places to eat and drink. Whether you are searching for an early morning coffee or ready to sample a healthy lunch, there are plenty of places to satisfy your appetite.

Here are some of our favorites that we were fortunate to experience during our Made In NY: Industry City Brooklyn tour.

Colson Patisserie

Our journey around Industry City’s food scene started at Colson Patisserie where we enjoyed a delicious caffeine boost and a selection of handmade baked goods.

Typical of a French or Belgian style patisserie, Colson has created a myriad of artisanal pastries that anyone with a sweet tooth will find hard to resist.

Since 2006, Colson Patisserie has created artisan pastries in the tradition of the finest patisseries in Belgium and France. (Colson Patisserie)

Whether you are intrigued by the various pastries on offer or simply prefer to just enjoy a coffee to start your day, we strongly recommend sampling the coffee shop’s local mascot – Hubert the teddy bear cookie!

Gumption Coffee

Industry City is more than just the eight former manufacturing warehouses that run parallel together. As you walk along the waterfront towards Costco, there is another section that is primarily home to the Brooklyn Nets training center. But it’s also home to another awesome coffee shop, Gumption Coffee!

gumption coffee industry city

Recently opened, Gumption Coffee originated in Australia but has since made its way over to the United States and the location you see today in the heart of Brooklyn.

We were instantly impressed by the overall layout of the coffee shop, with a large space behind the bar area designed to help the company manufacture their coffee, test new drinks and handle everything required to run a successful coffee shop.

As we spoke with one of the baristas, she informed us that Gumption Coffee is focused on delivering high-quality coffee. Even if you are not a black coffee drinker like myself, please sample Gumption’s black coffee and you will be surprised at how good it is.

Whether you choose to add milk after is your choice but you know you have found a good coffee spot when the black coffee is sweet and full of rich taste. Don’t forget to sample one of the decadent, freshly made chocolate espresso cookies…you will not be disappointed!

Brooklyn Kura

Ok, I’m not going to lie, when I heard that our tour guide was taking us to a sake brewery, I was pretty excited! I will openly admit that neither of us have tried sake before, so this was going to be a completely new experience for us.

brooklyn kura sake

Brooklyn Kura is a trendy sake brewery located in warehouse 8 offering an eclectic variety of sake concoctions. The beauty of Brooklyn Kura is that the sake served here is brewed “in-house” right in the heart of New York City with the finest ingredients available.

Are you familiar with sake? I honestly wasn’t either! Sake is a Japanese inspired rice wine that comprises of four simple ingredients – rice, water, yeast and koji.

Whether you’ve been on a sake pilgrimage to Japan or you’re a complete sake rookie, we promise you won’t be disappointed. (Brooklyn Kura)

While visiting Tokyo in 2013, owners Brian and Brandon discovered a shared passion for sake. Their passion for sampling the finest sake led them to take courses, apprentice in Japanese breweries and finally…start their very own sake brewery right in the heart of Industry City!

Avocaderia

When it comes to modern day healthy cuisine, Industry City is committed to encouraging visitors to follow this lifestyle. At the forefront of this philosophy is Avocaderia, a restaurant dedicated to using avocados in all their menu items.

We are committed to building a happier and healthier lifestyle. (Avocaderia)

I’m going to be completely honest…I really don’t like avocado! But I am always willing to try something new and when our guide decided to take us to Avocaderia I was looking forward to sampling his favorite recommendations.

avocaderia brooklyn

The Chill Out avocado toast was delicious and definitely my preferred option but we also sampled the Mediterranean toast which is a good choice for those of you that love a combination of avocado, tomatoes and feta cheese.

The beauty of Avocaderia is that this company is focused on developing menu items utilizing locally sourced and sustainably produced ingredients. Combine this with a dedication to emphasizing the importance of following a healthy lifestyle, this Industry City eatery is one that will surely inspire similar companies to enter this area.

Summary

Industry City is a diverse arts and entertainment complex that is certainly worth exploring if you are planning a visit to New York City. If you are ready to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, we strongly recommend taking the Made In NY: Industry City Brooklyn walking tour.

I am really impressed by Urban Adventures use of local tour guides who are knowledgeable and willing to share their expertise on the best things to do in the area you are visiting. We picked the brain of our tour guide throughout and he was always more than willing to share his expert opinion.

We look forward to returning to Industry City in the near future and hopefully seeing this neighborhood continue to develop. What was once a thriving manufacturing hub is now a thriving, trendy haven for locals and visitors to enjoy a delicious coffee or authentic sake while indulging in authentic, local cuisine.

We were delighted to be able to participate in this walking tour with our friend Ashley from Wild Hearted (formerly A Southern Gypsy).

Geneva to Zurich – How to Enjoy Epic Scenery in Switzerland?

Switzerland is blessed to have breathtaking scenery around almost every corner (or over every mountain range) but it’s also a country that is frequently renowned for being one of the more expensive to visit in Europe. For those of you that don’t want to miss out on this spectacular scenery, yet don’t think you can afford to spend much time there, we believe we have found the perfect alternative for you. The train journey from Geneva to Zurich offers visitors the opportunity to experience a little bit of everything that Switzerland has to offer and it’s a route that you can easily enjoy in only 24 hours!

geneva to zurich golden pass

Whether you are planning a quick trip to explore the heart of Switzerland or perhaps planning on using either Geneva or Zurich as a base to enjoy some of the finest scenery in the world, the journey between these two Swiss cities is one that you cannot afford to miss. The iconic Golden Pass route is an unforgettable journey but spending some time in some of the alpine towns along this route is also something you will want to enjoy.

golden pass switzerland

Although it’s feasible to enjoy this journey in one day, I would argue that you would find this more beneficial if you split this over several days. However, that is entirely your decision and to reiterate, if you are on a tight budget, we realize that Switzerland can be very expensive and so, we want to provide a guide to enjoying the best of the Swiss nation regardless of how much time you choose to spend.

Geneva to Zurich Route

Although there are a few different options available, in our opinion there is only one route worth considering – the Golden Pass! Heading through the Swiss Alps along the scenic Golden Pass line is an experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

geneva to zurich by train

Until we experienced the breathtaking Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano, we really didn’t think that anything could come close to the Golden Pass.

If you choose to follow our advice and sit back and relax by hopping on the train between Geneva and Zurich, or perhaps instead choose to road trip between these infamous Swiss cities, there are plenty of places along the way that you will want to explore.

  • Explore Geneva
  • Experience the resort town of Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva
  • Enjoy the epic scenery along the Golden Pass (if opting for the train route)
  • Visit the alpine town of Interlaken and enjoy the Swiss Alps cable railway system to explore other mountain villages
  • Spend time in the town of Lucerne
  • Explore Zurich

Let’s take a look at some of the best stops and why this route will be one that you will be eager to experience the next time you head to Europe.

Geneva

Renowned as the global “capital of peace”, Geneva is Switzerland’s second most populous city and definitely a place worth exploring. One thing we first noticed during our first visit to Geneva was the distinctive blend of modern and historic architecture throughout the city.

geneva old town

Whether you are intrigued to explore the “Old Town” or prefer to experience the modern aspects of the city, there is plenty to enjoy around Geneva, regardless of how much time you choose to spend there.

geneva old town

The Old Town is characterized as an area with a beautiful array of picturesque squares and a maze of ancient streets. The infamous St. Peter’s Cathedral is perhaps the most iconic landmark Geneva but honestly, this barely touches the surface at how much history can be found across the city.

st peter's cathedral geneva

Place du Bourg-de-Four is another iconic landmark, primarily because this square is the oldest place in Geneva, where the Roman marketplace could be found. But the best part of Geneva’s Old Town is allowing yourself to be spontaneous and take a stroll up and down the cobbled streets and simply allow time to drift by as you admire the intricate details still apparent in the various architectural masterpieces.

geneva switzerland

Take a moment to stop in one of the various chocolate shops because well, when in Switzerland, you cannot leave without sampling the local Swiss delicacy.

geneva fountain

Alternatively, for the “modern” side of Geneva, why not head to the banks of Lake Geneva and admire the spectacular display offered by the ultra-modern Jet d’Eau fountain that towers 459 feet into the sky. It’s fair to say whatever part of the city you choose to experience, Geneva is a place you will quickly fall in love with.

explore geneva

You could easily spend several days in Geneva or alternatively, like we did, spend just a few hours in the morning enjoying this beautiful city. The beauty of adopting this approach, besides being able to enjoy more of the beautiful nation of Switzerland, is that it will leave you itching for more and want to book a return trip to Geneva in the near future.

After spending the morning in Geneva, we boarded the train to head towards the Swiss Alps. Before heading deep into alpine country, this short train journey culminated in the town of Montreux located on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva.

Located in the district of Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut in the canton of Vaud, Montreux is well worth exploring for a few hours before hopping on the Golden Pass to enjoy the incredible Swiss Alps.

The train station is located above the town but is only a short walk from the shoreline where you can consider taking a cruise on Lake Geneva to destinations such as Vevey, Nyon, Morges and the French shores.

The journey from Montreux to Zweisimmen passes through the gorgeous Simmen Valley before passing through the alpine village of Gstaad and then higher into the Swiss Alps.

After arriving in Zweisimmen, you can spend some time in this quaint village in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, or alternatively, hop on the next train to Interlaken and enjoy more spectacular scenery.

Estimated time for the two journeys:

We have been fortunate to experience the Golden Pass route on several occasions but this is one of those journeys that never gets old.

Best Coffee Shops in St. Helier

If you have been following our travels around the world, you will know that we love stumbling across local coffee shops when we visit new destinations. I’m going to be completely honest, I had no idea that the island of Jersey was going to offer such a dynamic and widespread coffee scene.

best coffee shops in st helier

Not only were we pleasantly surprised but we also fell in love with a number of the coffee shops and they quickly rose to the very top of our favorite coffee bars around the world.

The beauty of many of St. Helier’s coffee shops is that they could easily fit into another category in this post because they offer much more than just your traditional “coffee shop” menu items. Of course, you can pick your favorite espresso or cake but many of these also have a widespread menu for breakfast, lunch or even dinner options.

Locke’s Coffee & Grub

It’s crazy to think that you can walk into a coffee shop and immediately fall in love with the place, even before you have sampled the drinks and food available. This was definitely the case with Locke’s Coffee and Grub in the heart of St. Helier.

lockes coffee and grub jersey

The history of Locke’s is enough to justify falling in love with it, given that it was a former music store and it was the focus of a campaign by the National Trust to preserve and protect it from development. Locke’s Coffee & Grub, owned by the husband and wife team of Drew and Ella, has been developed into the gorgeous coffee shop that we see today, yet still maintaining much of the traditional feel of that original shop.

For those of you that love the modern era of coffee…you know, the lighter, sweeter flavors rather than the bold, traditionalist style coffees, the best place to visit in St. Helier is Shuga.

The modern brewing techniques used here help create the amazing, diverse collection of coffee options and I have to admit, they have a unique taste that is definitely one that you will remember.

Shuga is all about getting Jersey’s coffee culture up to date

Located in Seaton Place in the heart of St. Helier, Shuga is a small coffee shop but despite its size, don’t let this fool you in terms of the quality of coffee available. All of the standard beverages are available for purchase along with a few local favorites and of course, a visit to Shuga wouldn’t be the same without sampling one of the delicious muffins or other pastries.

Coffee Republic

Although we don’t usually include chain restaurants or coffee shops in our reviews, when we stumbled across Coffee Republic along King Street in downtown St. Helier, we couldn’t resist visiting.

Whether it was because we visited Jersey just before Christmas and the appeal of the Coffee Republic seasonal drink selection was such that we couldn’t resist, I don’t know but we quickly fell in love with this place.

Heather opted for the Turkish Delight Hot Chocolate which was decadent, smooth and of course, the perfect drink on a cold winter’s day after a long hike along Jersey’s rugged north coastline. I opted for the Gingerbread latte and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

One of the best reason to visit any chain coffee restaurant (yes, I openly admit we both love Starbucks and Costa Coffee around the world) is they are generally larger and you have more space to relax.

Ok, to make life a little easier, the Greeks have only inhabited 227 of these…ONLY 227! It’s still going to be difficult to put together a post highlighting the “best of the best” but we are going to best. Thanks to our amazing friends in the travel blogging world, we are going to recommend a selection of the very best places that you cannot afford to miss when considering a trip to the Aegean region of Europe.

Greece may have 6000 islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian Seas but I would guess that there are not many of these that you are aware of. Before reading on, I challenge you to the following…

How many Greek islands/locations can you name?

Crete, Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini…are you struggling yet? It’s ok…not only is there A LOT of Greek islands and destinations, they are not the easiest to say or spell. And that’s before you even start thinking about all those iconic Greek mythological creatures and figures that once ruled the world – did we even mention one of the world’s most historic cities yet – Athens?

naxos greece

But we are not going to delve too much into Greek literature during this post, rather we want to inspire your Greek wanderlust and share some of the best spots worth visiting at any time of the year.

Whether you are thinking about exploring the slopes of the Acropolis or perhaps experiencing one of the many watersport activities courtesy of Mark Warner before relaxing on the pristine Greek beaches, Greece is a place you cannot help but fall in love…at ANY time of the year!

That’s right, the beauty of Greece is that you can visit all year round and have an amazing adventure.

Best Places to Visit in Greece

The beauty of creating such a list of the best places to experience in Greece is that there are so many spots that could easily find their way on to the shortlist.

Thanks to our awesome and incredibly knowledgeable explorers from across the globe, also known as our travel blogging friends, we have put together a collection of places that perfectly outline why Greece should be on everyone’s radar in the near future.

From the iconic destinations to hidden gems, this list has it all! Here are the places, in no particular order, that have found their way on to the list.

  • Athens
  • Corinth
  • Crete
  • Folegandros
  • Hydra
  • Karpathos
  • Meteora
  • Mykonos
  • Naxos
  • Paros
  • Santorini
  • Sifnos
  • Skopelos
  • Symi
  • Thassos
  • Thessaloniki

Athens

When you think about historic cities around the world, Athens is arguably at the very top of most peoples lists. The capital of Greece and a city rich full of history, gorgeous archeological ruins and of course, blended in with a modern feel that makes this such a popular destination among visitors from across the globe.

athens greece

For those of you planning a visit to Greece for the first time, Athens is likely going to be at the very top of your preferred destinations…and obviously, for very good reason. From the iconic Parthenon at the summit of the slopes of the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, visitors could easily spend several days in Athens just experiencing the most infamous landmarks.

acropolis athens greece

The Ancient Agora of Athens features the ruins of an ancient Greek gathering place while those interested in learning more about the evolution of the Acropolis should head to the ultramodern Acropolis Museum, perfectly situated in close proximity to the entrance to the historic landmark.

athens sunset

Athens is a city that even if you have very little interest in Greek history will immediately capture your imagination and attention. You cannot help but think about what life was like thousands of years ago and yet today, all of these amazing landmarks have been preserved and continue to live on.

athens olympic stadium

For the Olympic fans out there, head over to Panathenaic Stadium to admire what hosted the first “official” Olympic Games in 1896. This stadium is an architectural masterpiece as its made entirely of marble. It is well worth visiting and contrasting with modern day stadia across the world.

Corinth

Corinth is an ideal destination for an easy day trip from Athens. It only takes around an hour to reach Corinth by car but there is plenty to see and do thanks to Corinth’s long history and natural beauty.

The most famous sight in Corinth is the Corinth Canal, a deep man-made strait separating the Peloponnese peninsula from the mainland. Its construction began in 1881 but the first attempts to create this nautical shortcut between the Saronic and Corinthian Gulf reach as far as the antiquity.

corinth greece

Passing the canal towards Peloponnese you’ll soon reach the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth. At its prime, Corinth was one of the most important city-states in Greece and the excavations site together with a small museum offer an outlook into the organization and a way of life in the ancient city.

But the best part of the trip is a visit of Acrocorinth, the acropolis of Corinth, sitting on an imposing monolithic rock above the ancient city. Once a temple devoted to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, it was rebuilt into an impressive fortress during the medieval times. And the views from the top across Isthmus and the mountains of Peloponnese are as striking as the fortress itself.

Thanks to Helena from Just For One Summer for contributing Corinth to this collaboration.

Crete

Looking for your next destination in Greece? The island of Crete definitively has it all: stunning beaches, ancient archaeological sites, magnificent gorges, mountains dropping into the sea, white villages, Venetian architecture… Should I go on?

However the island is quite large. Therefore it deserves its own vacation there.

The North coast is developed with resort towns and all the main cities, while the South is wilder with canyons and smaller villages.

crete island greece

I think the best way to explore is on a road trip. But if you are looking for a basis, I recommend to stay half of your trip in the Venetian town of Chania to explore the West side with the magnificent Balos Lagoon, the impressive Samaria Gorge and the pink sand beach at Elafonisi.

As for the second part, you could stay around Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos to visit the old leper colony of Spinalonga, the hippie Matala beach and the famous Knossos palace (home of the Minotaur).

So many things to see and do and Crete!

Thanks to Claire from ZigZag On Earth for contributing the island of Crete to this collaboration.

Folegandros

Located a ferry ride away from Santorini, Folegandros is the wild child of the white-washed Cyclades. The island has a population of just 650 people and just two settlements. Mainly a fishing and agricultural island, parts of it still don’t even have electricity.

But what Folegandros lacks in modern development, it more than makes up for with natural beauty. It’s one of the best Greek islands to visit for stunning beaches and to simply get away from it all.

folegandros greece

There’s not a ton of things to do on Folegandros. Relaxation and fun in the sun is the name of the game when you visit this Greek isle. Rent a buggy and go off exploring the beaches that you often find yourself the only one on.

Hike up the snaking path to the little church that caps the island’s highest point and watch the sunset. Or simply enjoy the authentic foodie specialties of this little island paradise, like fresh fish caught that morning and goat matsata.

No matter how you spend your time on Folegandros, you’ll experience an entirely different side of Greece than is seen on more touristic islands like Santoini and Mykonos. Just don’t forget to bring plenty of cash with you. Folegandros only has a lone ATM and credit cards aren’t widely accepted.

Thanks to Jennifer Dombrowksi and Tim Davis from Luxe Adventure Traveler for contributing Folegandros to this collaboration.

Hydra

If you’re looking for a Greek island that’s quiet and peaceful, consider Hydra. While this island is one of the closest Greek islands to Athens as it’s just two hours away by ferry, it has a drastically different feel in terms of pace of life.

hydra greece

With a population of only 2,000 people, the island is completely car and motorbike free, with pedestrian-only streets up and down this hilly but beautiful island. As a result, Hydra is known for its many horses and donkeys who line the harbor edge, since they are truly the only way to get around the island short of walking yourself!

hydra donkeys

Some of the best things to do in Hydra include strolling the harbor, going on a historical walking tour, people watching in the squares, and visiting the beautiful Kimisis Tis Theotokou Cathedral.

Besides that, there are a handful of interesting museums, including the Ecclesiastical Museum associated with the island’s monastery and the Kountouriotis house museum. And of course, in Greece, it’s hard to eat a bad meal, best enjoyed on the waterfront watching the beautiful sea.

Thanks to Allison Green from Sofia Adventures for contributing Hydra to this collaboration.

Karpathos

Karpathos Island sits at the far southeastern corner of the Greek Islands, between Crete and Rhodes. It’s distinguished by rocky mountainous landscapes, serene beaches, and calm tourism. With a year-round population of 7000, the island is still uncrowded. The big cruise ships don’t stop here, but Karpathos is well connected by ferries, smaller ships, and a nice airport.

Karpathos Greece
The Village of Olympos by Kristin Henning, TravelPast50.com

Visitors will want to carve out a day trip to the village of Olympos in the north, where the old culture of this historic agricultural area shines through. Artisan goods like boots, textiles, and musical instruments make this a great shopping stop, too.

From Olympos, hiking trails spider across the mountains in all directions. The island’s 150 miles of marked trails offer access to protected areas, flora and fauna, including some 200 species of birds.

Sunset over Lefkos by Kristin Henning, TravelPast50.com

Sampling some of Karpathos’ 75 beach coves is a favorite pastime. Boat tours from the capital city of Pigadia deliver bathers and sun-lovers in style, with lunches on board or ashore. Some of the coves are deserted, others are wrapped by small villages topped with bright blue and white churches.

Everywhere on the island, family businesses and wonderful food draw visitors closer and encourage many to return.

Thanks to Kristin Henning from Travel Past 50 for contributing Karpathos to this collaboration.

Meteora

Greece is a country of majestic landscapes, and few are as evocative as Meteora. Located in the Thessaly region of central Greece, this UNESCO World Heritage site complex boasts unique rock formations, centuries old monasteries, and views that defy belief.

As early as the 11th century, hermits began setting up home in the uniquely eroded pinnacles of Meteora. In the 14th century, a series of monasteries were constructed, some of which are still in use to this day.

meteora greece

Meteora has long been an important center for the Greek Orthodox religion, and is credited as playing a significant role in the continuation of Greek culture and religion during the Ottoman period of occupation. Today, it is one of the most visited parts of Greece, but still retains its mystery and charm.

Whilst it is possible to visit Meteora on a day trip from Athens, it’s far better to spend at least one night there. This way, you are able to witness either the sunset or sunrise (or both!), and capture those perfect Instagram pictures as the light changes throughout the day.

To find out more about visiting Meteora, check out Dave’s guide to the Meteora Monasteries in Greece.

Mykonos

Mykonos was the first Greek island I visited when I was just 18 years old, and 18 years later it remains one of my favourite places to visit in Greece. The island is very lively, known for being a great party destination – this is why I was drawn to it during my crazy partying days!

mykonos greece

Talking about the beaches in Mykonos, Paradise and Super Paradise beaches are definitely the places to go if you are looking for a party vibe, but even if you just want to relax or be immersed in wonderful nature, Mykonos has a lot to offer.

Two of my favourite quiet beaches are Agrari and Fokos beach. There’s no public transport to either of them so it’s necessary to either drive or walk, but you’ll be rewarded with secluded atmospheres and clear water.

things to do in mykonos greece

Besides the beaches, it’s dun to walk around Mykonos Town taking pictures of the whitewashed buildings and famous windmills, and the island is in an ideal position to go on day trips to nearby islands like Delos, a UNESCO site!

Thanks to Margherita Ragg from The Crowded Planet for contributing Mykonos to this collaboration.

Naxos

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades chain of Greek Islands and its laid back atmosphere and its non-existent cruise ship crowds make it appealing for visitors. It is also in an ideal position between the popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini.

naxos greece

Although laid back, there are plenty of things to do in Naxos from hiking to water sports to exploring ancient archaeological sites and small towns. Right next to the Naxos port is the Temple of Apollo, Naxos’ most recognizable landmark. Just a few minutes walk from the harbor, it makes a great sunset spot and frames the island beautifully.

Naxos Town has plenty to explore, from tight passageways of whitewashed buildings, vibrant nightlife, boutique and, souvenir shopping and great restaurants. Naxos is known for its beautiful beaches, and their shallow drop-offs make it a popular island choice for families.

things to do in naxos greece

While there, do not miss Agios Prokopios, known to many as the best beach on the Island. If watersports are your thing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular on many beaches. If hiking is one of your interests, hike to Kalamitsia, where you will find a Monastery and small settlements.

Whatever you enjoy, the island is large enough to keep you busy for 4-5 days, although you can see and enjoy a lot in just a day or two.

Thanks to Lindsay Nieminen from Carpe Diem Our Way for contributing Naxos to this collaboration.

Paros

No trip to the Greek Islands is complete without a stop in Paros, as genuine and breathtaking as the Mediterranean comes. With plentiful beaches that overlook the Aegean Sea, Cypress groves and ancient ruins, this is an authentic Greek experience you won’t find anywhere else.

paros greece

It’s underrated enough that you won’t find hordes of tourists, yet it’s warm and welcoming. The traditional seaside villages, with their whitewashed walls and blue domes are just the start of what you’ll want to explore while you’re here.

things to do in paros

Highlights include the following:

Byzantine Trail

Once a medieval trail that served island-dwellers in the Byzantine times, the Byzantine Trail is now open for strolling and takes a little over an hour to get from one end to another. It begins in Lefkes, a mountain village in Paros and ends at the settlement of Prodromos, a settlement dating back to the Byzantine times.

The trail takes you through valleys of Olive and Cypress trees, stone-paved streets and remnants of historical structures. With the warm Mediterranean sun on your shoulders, it’s easy to stroll the Byzantine Trail and think you’ve gone back in time.

Byzantine Museum

Housed in a traditional whitewashed complex in Parikia, the Byzantine Museum holds plentiful rare icons dating back to the 17th and 18th century, with a focus on traditional and simple art. These icons tell the story of history in the Cyclades Islands, making it a must if you’re there.

Frankish Castle

Possibly one of the most historical buildings on the Island of Paros, the Frankish Castle is an awe-inspiring structure indeed. Built in the 1200’s, it features intricate stonework and classic architecture. In the surrounding area, you’ll also find temple ruins and historical remnants of village residences.

paros greece

If you’re looking for an authentic Greek island experience with a touch of Medieval history and a slightly off-the-beaten-path feel, you can’t beat Paros!

Thanks to Roslie from Coastlines to Skylines for contributing Paros to this collaboration.

Santorini

Santorini’s irony is that many of the reasons people love it stem from a volcano that exploded and nearly wiped the place off the map in 1646 BC. What Mother Nature did to this island less than 4,000 years ago turned Santorini into a place where hiking, ancient ruins, and even scuba diving are all great activities.

best things to do in santorini

But what Santorini is probably most famous for is its sunsets. They are so beautiful, in fact, that people break into applause. A few hours before that happens, we suggest taking the caldera hike from Fira to Oia. This hike takes 3-5 hours and goes through Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia.

santorini sunset

Every photo you take here will be Instagram-worthy. The terrain ranges from paved trail to cobblestone and dirt, so wear a good pair of hiking shoes and you’ll be fine. When you get to Oia, find a spot along the hilltop to capture the epic Santorini sunset.

santorini greece

Santorini is also known for shopping, wineries, food, and much more. It’s an excellent honeymoon destination or just a great spot for a couple to spend a week together.

Thanks to Michael and Halef from The Round The World Guys for contributing Santorini to this collaboration.

Sifnos

Sifnos is the Greek island I dream about on a cold, grey day in the UK. It has pretty villages, a dramatic landscape and picturesque fishing harbors to rival any of the other islands but also has fantastic beaches (not always a given in Greece), chic hotels and some of the best food in the Cyclades.

sifnos greece

There’s plenty to do here, from driving to the fishing village of Cheronissos for a dip in the sea and fresh seafood at the Amoudi tavern, to exploring the pretty village of Artemonas and following your nose to the orange and almond-scented biscuits in its renowned bakery.

Be sure to explore the labyrinthine streets of Kastro, the island’s oldest village, built over 3,000 years ago on a rock overlooking the sea. From here you can walk across to the Church of the Seven Martyrs, one of the most beautiful settings of any church in Greece.

things to do in sifnos

And you’ll want to spend a lot of time on those glorious beaches, from the large sweep of sand at Vathi and Platis Gialos to little bays like Poulati that you can hike to. Take a boat trip around the island to get to some of the more remote beaches.

Thanks to Clare Thomson from Suitcases and Sandcastles for contributing Sifnos to this collaboration.

Skopelos

Skopelos is the smaller brother of the more touristy Greek island Skiathos. There is no airport on the island, so the easiest way is to get there is to take the ferry from Skiathos. Skopelos has been named the “Greek Tuscany” by travelers for years, and not without reason. The green island is covered by olive fields, and known for its tasty olive oil.

skopelos greece

However, what really put this anonymous island on the map was the filming of the famous musical “Mamma Mia” that was released in 2008. Since then, tourists have come to the island to do Mamma Mia Tours and see all the spots where the musical was filmed.

best places to visit around greece

To experience the island in your own pace you can rent a scooter, quad or a car. There are countless beaches to explore and hidden local restaurants with stunning sea views all around the island. Further, Skopelos is great for hiking, as it has endless of walking trails. You can get a guide or find your way around the well marked hiking trails on your own.

things to do in skopelos

In the late evening, Skopelos town comes to life, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Thanks to Linn Haglund from Brainy Backpackers for contributing Skopelos to this collaboration.

Symi

Symi, the Greek Island closest to Turkey geographically, is also one of the most beautiful in Greece. The island is dotted with neo-classical pastel facades like you would see in Cinque Terre or Positano; yet, in comparison, Symi is relatively untouched.

Many travelers take a day trip to Symi from Rhodes as it is only a short ferry ride with multiple boats departing every day during peak season. One of the best things to do in Symi is to hike to the Old Town, a village called Chorio, via the Kali Strata which are a series of about 500 steps; you will be rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views.

symi greece

Symi used to be a commercial sponge fishing and ship-building center; however, the main industry today is tourism. You can pay homage to Symi’s past industry by shopping for a natural sea sponge at one of the many souvenir shops along the harbor.

There are many popular beaches in Symi, so if you do fall so in love with the island that you decide to stay awhile, you will have plenty of beach options to choose from!

Thanks to Jennifer from World On A Whim for contributing Symi to this collaboration.

Thassos

Thassos, the northern-most Greek island, doesn’t have its own airport. Nonetheless, it is very easy to reach by ferry from either Keramoti or Kavala. The crystal clear waters make Thassos the ideal place for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are many scuba diving schools in Limenas, the capital city, as well as in Skala Prinos, Potos and Pefkari.

thassos greece

The island has lots of sandy beaches, but also hills and valleys, offering excellent opportunities for mountain biking, hiking and even off-road driving adventures. Unlike other Greek islands, Thassos is home to many species of trees, herbs, shrubs and flowers which attract colorful birds and insects. Bird watchers and photographers won’t get bored here.

thassos greek island

Last but not least, Thassos is famous for its horseback riding schools that attract people of all ages. Romantic and adventurous travelers can enjoy horse and pony trekking along the hills and beaches of this island.

History and culture are also present all over the place. The sun dried octopus, which appears to be one of the traditional dishes here, is one of the things to try at least once in a lifetime. Many restaurants have it on the menu, and some of them will serve it to you directly on the beach.

Thanks to Violeta Matei from Offbeat Greece for contributing Thassos to this collaboration.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is Greece’s second largest city, based in the North of the country. It is also considered as the country’s cultural capital, famous for its festivals and events taking place throughout the year like the Film Festival, Documentary Festival, Photography Festival Book Fiar and even a Hip Hop Festival.

Thessaloniki Greece

The city is characterized by the 34m high “Lefkos Pyrgos” (“white building/tower”), which used to form part of the defensive walls. The beachfront promenade runs from the White Tower and is one of the most popular meeting spots, with an array of excellent cafes and bars to hang out.

Further inland are a plethora of cute cobblestone roads lined with orange trees, many boutique shops, beautiful churches and highly rated traditional Greek tavernas like “Kanoula”, “Tripia Potiria” and “Prytanio”. It is also home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments like the “Paleochristian”.

best things to visit in greece

One of the most fascinating museums we visited in Thessaloniki is the historic home of Atatürk (founder of modern Turkey), which is definitely worth a visit.

Thessaloniki is also an excellent base for summertime beach visits to nearby Halkidiki. It is also a port, so ideal for visiting nearby islands like Kavala, Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and, Skyros.

Chur to Tirano – Enjoy Amazing Scenery on the Bernina Express

Switzerland is blessed to have breathtaking scenery everywhere you look. Whether you are crossing the spectacular Golden Pass across the Swiss Alps or simply enjoying the views from the shores of Lake Lucerne, it’s no surprise that visitors flock here from all corners of the globe to admire this beautiful country. During our recent visit to Switzerland, we believe we have taken the beauty of this nation to the next level when we traveled on the train from Chur to Tirano, a small town in Northern Italy. Welcome to the Bernina Express!

chur to tirano

Having spent quite some time exploring the beauty of Switzerland’s natural landscapes, we really didn’t think that this journey in the south-east corner of this country could better anything we had previously experienced. It goes without saying the Bernina Express route is renowned as one of the most prestigious train journeys not only in Europe but anywhere in the world. We can 100% attest that this journey delivers way more than you could ever imagine.

chur to tirano bernina express

The beauty of traveling through Switzerland’s spectacular landscapes by train is that for the most part, you are moving at a relatively slow speed which enables you to appreciate everything you see around you. We hope that after reading this post and admiring what we consider to be some of the best photographs we have ever had the privilege of taking, you will be inspired to take a trip on the Bernina Express.

Chur to Tirano – Eurail Pass

One of the huge benefits of purchasing a Eurail Pass (regardless of whether it’s a one country, Select or Global Pass) is that you have the opportunity to experience these amazing train routes that perhaps otherwise you wouldn’t think about exploring.

bernina express

Simply hop on the train and enjoy this breathtaking route on the Bernina Express. No reservations are needed for this journey unlike some other iconic routes across Europe and I think this alone makes this one of the best options for those looking at taking the best train journeys on the continent.

bernina express chur to tirano

For those of you opting to purchase a Eurail pass, you may be wondering how much money you can save. Just to give you an idea of approximate ticket prices for the Bernina Express, at the time of publication, a second-class ticket would cost CHF 63 ($64) and a first-class ticket (for those of you who prefer to travel in luxury and if you read our post on Eurail first class travel, I can certainly understand why) will cost CHF 111 ($113).

Bernina Express Route

If you choose to embark on the Bernina Express, we recommend breaking this route into a couple of segments. This is exactly what we did during our recent adventure, by taking the train from Chur to St. Moritz, and then St. Moritz to Tirano. Not only do you get to experience two epic train journeys but you can also spend some time in one of Switzerland’s most iconic alpine towns.

switzerland to italy by train

We will take a look at the two routes in a little more detail later but if you are thinking about admiring those glistening glaciers and appreciating a myriad of alpine villages, the train journey along the Bernina Express will not leave you disappointed.

bernina express train route

There are not many train journeys around the world that offers those onboard the opportunity to admire such magical scenery while negotiating 55 tunnels and 196 bridges! It’s a pretty incredible experience and honestly, words and pictures will never do this train ride enough justice.

Here are the approximate train ride journeys on the two “legs” of the Bernina Express.

  • Chur to St. Moritz – Approximately 2 Hours
  • St. Moritz to Tirano – Approximately 2 Hours

As you can see, be prepared to allocate at least 4 hours to experience the Bernina Express but the reality is that you will need more time if you follow our itinerary given that you will spend a few hours in St. Moritz.

filisur train station

Crossing the beautiful canton of Graubünden, the Bernina Express is an unforgettable experience offering high alpine scenery on the Bernina Pass and spectacular natural beauty on the lower Poschiavo valley en route to Tirano. Let’s take a look at some of the experiences you can expect on the two legs of this journey, along with a few reasons why St. Moritz is worth exploring for a few hours.

chur to tirano train journey

Chur to St. Moritz

After taking an early morning train from Basel via Zurich, we boarded the train in Chur for the first leg of the Bernina Express. The first few minutes of this journey lead you outside of the town and honestly, nothing in the early part of this train ride will prepare you for what is to come later on.

chur to st moritz train

It’s only when you start climbing after passing through the villages of Reichenau, Thusis and Tiefencastel that you start realizing exactly why the Bernina Express is such an incredible train journey. As you meander through the Domleschg valley known for historic ruins and castles, you cannot help but start admiring the breathtaking scenery around you.

bernina express landwasser viaduct

As you pass over the curved Landwasser viaduct, one of those iconic spots where if you are lucky, you can capture a picture of the front of the train entering the tunnel, you are immediately transformed into a winter wonderland.

chur to st moritz

For the first hour of the journey from Chur, we experienced nothing in terms of snow but as we started to climb sharply, the snowfall started to appear and it honestly made the experience that much more exhilarating.

bernina express

At an elevation of 1,800 meters (5,910) feet, you arrive in the alpine town of St. Moritz, iconically known as hosting the Winter Olympics on multiple occasions.

Although you may not want to leave the train after such an amazing journey, this is a good place to get out and stretch your legs for a few hours and grab a bite to eat before enjoying what we consider to be an even more spectacular second leg of the route to Tirano.

Olympic Town of St. Moritz

When you think about the Winter Olympics and historic, landmark destinations that have hosted this global competition, there are not many places more infamous than the alpine town of St. Moritz in the heart of Switzerland.

st moritz switzerland

After hosting the Winter Olympics in both 1928 and 1948, it’s no surprise that St. Moritz is a town that has plenty of history surrounding it. Whether it’s the historic Olympic Stadium that is unlike the more traditional stadia that we associate with Olympic Games, or perhaps the iconic ski slopes that many of the world’s leading skiers have ejoyed, St. Moritz is a town that is well worth exploring.

st moritz winter olympics

In terms of iconic events, the adrenaline-fuelled bobsleigh run is perhaps the most famous that has been held in St. Moritz. Officially opened in 1904, the Olympic Bob Run St. Moritz-Celerin is the world’s oldest bobsleigh track. Another intriguing fact about this track is that it’s the only natural ice track in the world!

st moritz lake

The Olympic Bob Run St. Moritz-Celerina is the world’s only natural ice bob run and also the oldest bobrun still in operation. (My Switzerland)

For those of you that are not keen on hopping on this iconic track, perhaps high tea at the luxurious Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is more inline with your taste. When you think about top of the range luxury hotels, there are not many in Switzerland that are more impressive than this hotel.

badrutt palace hotel

Whether you are admiring this gorgeous structure from the outside or you are fortunate enough to stay here, along with many global celebrities that choose to spend a few days here, it’s definitely a hotel that aligns with everything else that St. Moritz offers.

st moritz

Take a stroll along the main street into the heart of St. Moritz and glance over at the storefronts available here…it’s no surprise that only the cream of the crop in terms of fashion brands can be found here. Don’t expect to find too many bargain stores, rather the likes of Harry Winston, Cartier and Botttega Veneta can be found here.

st moritz caffe spettacolo

Although our budget didn’t allow for us to spend too much time wandering around these high-profile shops, we did head back down to St. Moritz train station to enjoy a delicious sandwich and coffee at Caffè Spettacolo before hopping back on the train for the next part of the journey.

st moritz lunch

St. Moritz to Tirano

If you thought the first half of the Bernina Express was memorable, just wait until you have boarded in St. Moritz and started the two hour journey to the northern Italian town of Tirano. The worst part of this journey is that it lasts only two hours because after experiencing this route, you will be longing for much more.

bernina express train

Shortly after leaving St. Moritz, the train winds its way through the alpine valleys and passes the town of Pontresina before reaching the highest peaks of the canton of Graubünden. The Lago Bianco (also known as “White Lake” will appear) but it’s those towering alpine peaks that you won’t be able to take your eyes off.

bernina express white lake

On a clear day, this is some of the most breathtaking scenery that we have experienced anywhere in the world. A pretty bold statement to make but it really is that awe-inspiring.

white lake switzerland

I don’t think you will be surprised to hear that we were pretty trigger happy with our camera during this part of the journey. The beauty of traveling via first-class Eurail passes is that you can pick a carriage with windows that open, ensuring that your pictures will be crystal clear and not having to deal with the potential glare of the windows.

chur to tirano train journey

The small station of Ospizio Bernina may not seem like much but this is one of the iconic stops on the Bernina Express given that it marks the highest point of the route, at 2253 meters above sea level.

If you are adventurous enough and don’t mind waiting a couple of hours for the next train, this is a great area to get out and do some hiking. It’s pretty quiet up here but the solitude and calmness is part of what makes the Swiss Alps so magical.

palu glacier

What goes up has to come down but don’t worry, the journey to Tirano is equally awesome. After passing the station of Alp Grüm, offering an amazing view of the Palü glacier, the train winds through the Poschiavo valley as it makes its way into Italian country.

poschiavo valley

Many of the villages that you pass through have a very Italian feel to them, despite still being in Switzerland. It’s no surprise to hear that many of these hamlets, such as Poschiavo itself, are predominantly Italian speaking.

The Bernina Express cruises deeper into the Poschiavo valley, passing by Lago di Poschiavo (Lake Poschiavo) before crossing the Swiss-Italian border and into the town of Tirano.

We have been incredibly fortunate to experience some of the best train rides across Europe in recent years but I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Bernina Express is definitely our favorite journey so far. 2018 Review – How to Transform Tragedy into Happiness

Every year since we started our blog we have put together a year end post reviewing our travels over the last 12 months. This year is no different in that respect but unfortunately, this is the hardest post I have ever had to write given the consequences of what has happened in the last couple of months. 2018 has been the ultimate rollercoaster of a year in so many respects, with many highs mixed with several low points that really tests your personality.

Rather than a typical year end review that looks back at a chronological reflection on our travels, I want to focus on more “reflective” and “personal” post that I hope allows you to get a better insight into what 2018 has been like for us.

A Year Full of Tragedy

Life can be so cruel sometimes. We always hear that human life is so precious and we should never take it for granted but as hard as we all try, the reality is that sometimes we do. It’s only in times of tragic heartbreak that reality truly sets in and we begin to notice just how fragile we are and how very little time we have on this planet.

strawberry fields new york city

2018 has been a year full of tragedy on a personal scale. Both Heather and I have suffered the loss of several members of our families in what has turned out to be a horrendous year of people passing away. At the beginning of the year, Heather and I were in Iceland only to find out on our flight home that Heather’s grandma had passed away. Only a couple of months later, I received a call from Heather’s mother on our way back from England to say that her other grandma had passed away…so cruel.

It is not the length of life but depth of life (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Only a few weeks into 2018 and Heather had lost both of her grandmothers and as you can imagine, it was pretty tough for both of us to take. Even if it’s not a direct member of your family, you become close to them and it hits you almost as hard, particularly when you are trying to be there for the person that is immediately impacted.

Just as we thought things were starting to get back to normal, Heather and I headed out to San Jose to the home of Google for our first Mediavine conference. The “Googleplex” is awesome, as was meeting some awesome folks at this conference. For those of you unaware of Mediavine, any of the ads (I know they can be annoying folks!) that you see on our website are driven there through Mediavine. During the last night at the conference, we were sat having dinner and I received a phone call from England saying that my grandad had passed away.

redwood state park california

It’s only when you hear the news that someone you have been incredibly close to and who you have looked up to for so long, that it really hits home…those are NOT the types of phone calls any of us enjoys! This is also a time that you realize it’s not ideal living the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s not so much the time difference or even length of time to reach the UK, rather it’s the cost associated with trying to book a last minute flight. Throw into the mix the fact our local airport is Memphis, Tennessee and well, it’s very, VERY expensive!

greenland

We FINALLY found a flight that left in the next few days out of Nashville and arrived in London. A four hour drive from Arkansas to Nashville, followed by flights to Newark, Toronto and finally London saw us arrive back in the UK. We then had to rent a car and drive another four hours to reach my parents home in North-West England.

Tragedy of Tragedies

By April, we had lost three grandparents between us and we honestly didn’t think that 2018 could get any worse. Thanks to all our amazing followers around the world (yes, you reading this post means that you fit into this category, so THANK YOU!!), we continued to travel the world and had many amazing experiences that helped us get through these tragic events.

floral tribute

The middle part of 2018 saw us head back to the UK again to celebrate July 4th by camping in Devon with my parents. We had perfect weather and it was an amazing experience checking out the best things to do in South Devon. Ironically, this would turn out to be an even bigger memory that I will always cherish…why? Because this was the last time that I was able to spend time with my mother!

Fast forwarding the clock to late October…11:15AM to be exact on October 30th when I received a call from an unknown phone number. Honestly, I rarely answer my phone if I don’t recognize the number but there was something about the number, perhaps because it had a UK dialing code, that made me pick up the phone. The person at the other end indicated that my dad was trying to get hold of me….the next words I heard was from him hysterically letting me know that my mum had passed away!

sunlight shining through forest

For the next few minutes, everything suddenly stopped in my life. I honestly had no idea what to say, what to think, what to feel. A grandparent passing away at 94 years old is one thing…but losing your mother who was only 70 and so suddenly is something you can NEVER prepare for.

The most painful goodbyes are the one that are never said and never explained.

My mum has always been a huge influence in my life. I know I am so much like her in many respects and I cannot thank her enough for everything she has done. She has taught me independence and she has taught me to how to pursue and reach my goals.

personal memories

She LOVED reading every one of our posts and honestly, for someone that only started using a computer a few years ago, I really believe that A Brit & A Southerner and all accompanying social networks was one of the main inspirations for taking an interest in learning technology.

The loss of a mother can never be replaced, but the love of a mother can never be lost (kelly flannery)

Always a Silver Lining

During my mother’s funeral (and my grandad’s), I spoke a few words to pay my respects and also share a few thoughts on what both individuals meant to me and how they shaped my life. Death is an awful event for those that have to grieve but I prefer to look at this in a positive sense and reflect on the many amazing memories you had with the person.

memories

I made a comment that I went out to America in 2006 to pursue my goal of being a professional golfer and although that dream didn’t materialize, there was the “silver lining” that I met Heather in 2008 and the rest is history. There were a few smiles when I made this comment but ultimately it’s how I like to reflect on things. When something negative or bad happens or something simply doesn’t go your way, you always have to find a positive.

eurail pass

Three days after we flew back to the States, we were supposed to fly back to Europe again on an epic adventure around the continent with our Eurail train passes. We had been planning this trip for quite some time, booked several flights, hotels and trains but with everything that had just happened, you can imagine how close we were to canceling that trip.

We were mentally and physically exhausted and only a few hours prior to boarding our first flight from Memphis to Chicago did we make a final decision. Our decision to travel back to Europe and take this adventure of a lifetime was a decision we didn’t take lightly but it was something that I know my mum would have wanted us to do.

lucerne switzerland

Every experience we had in Portugal, Switzerland, Italy and Greece, I reflected on what my mum would have thought and I know that should would have loved to experience it and see pictures from our travels.

This turned out to be an amazing trip and I am sure many of you followed this on social media. We have A LOT of content that we will be putting together in early 2019 from this trip, so be sure to keep checking out our website for more inspiration next year.

Our First House

If you have been following us in 2018, you will also know that we achieved another milestone in July – we purchased our first home! This was another huge event for us, not only because we had been renting for eight years but because we purchased a brand new property that wasn’t finished until the day we moved in (technically, it wasn’t finished until after but the builder has been awesome at keeping to his word and the 12-month home warranty we have).

Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love brought together under one roof (nate berkus)

We started a new section on our website about Weekends at Home, and in 2019 we are excited about putting more content on this part of the site. We really want to drive home the fact that anyone can still travel the world. Many people have said to us since we purchased the house in July that everything would change. Well folks, it hasn’t. If anything, it has made traveling easier.

2018 Year of Travel

2018 was another incredible year for traveling. Despite all of the heartache we suffered, we still had the opportunity to visit three new countries, travel to Europe on five separate occasions and take various trips around the US. Some of our highlight trips include the following.

2018 year of travel

Europe by Train

I referenced this trip above as we almost canceled it at the last minute but this turned out to be a real trip of a lifetime. We started in Portugal (the first of three new countries visited in 2018), flew to Geneva and then took the train with our Eurail first class travel pass through the Swiss Alps including the breathtaking Golden Pass and Bernina Express before heading into Italy and finishing in Greece.

golden pass train

Italy saw us explore a hidden gem in the Emilia-Romagna region by experiencing the best things to do in Bologna, while we found a real awesome apartment courtesy of L’8Boutique in the heart of this historic city. Day trips to Pisa and Rimini followed by a visit to the small municipality of San Marino (second new country in 2018) capped an awesome time in Italy.

bologna italy

Our final stop in Greece saw us spend 48 hours in Athens and as I’m sure you know, this city is rich full of history and gorgeous architecture.

Jersey, Channel Islands

The end of 2018 has been pretty rough but just prior to Christmas, we paid a visit to the beautiful island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. For those of you unaware of this geographic location, this group of islands is located off the south coast of England and actually much closer to the western coast of France.

mont orgueil jersey

We spent three days exploring the beautiful island and if you read our recent post on the best things to do in Jersey in winter, you will know that although this is renowned as a summer destination, it’s still well worth visiting during the quieter off-peak season.

lockes coffee and grub jersey

Places such as Locke’s Coffee & Grub and Number 10 Restaurant were inspiring finds and Jersey is definitely a place we cannot wait to return to…hopefully, in the not too distant future!

South Devon, England

People are always asking me for recommendations on the best things to do in England, particularly for first time visitors. I am never going to recommend London, possibly because I am a “Northerner”, because in my opinion, it’s a tourist trap and generally doesn’t reflect the “true” England that I think people deserve to experience.

totnes south devon

Ok, so the above paragraph is a little on the negative side because I still love exploring London with Heather and of course, it’s a place you have to visit. But there are SO many places outside of the capital that deserve to be experienced. Camping in Devon is one experience that we love, not only because we have found a real gem of a campsite unlike anywhere else in the world.

camping in devon

Exploring the best things to do in South Devon was an experience we will always cherish in 2018, not only because we had such a great time but also because these are the most recent memories we have spending time with my mum! It was an awesome trip and one that I know we all loved! We LOVED Devon prior to this trip but after all that happened, this place really has a special place in our hearts.

Oklahoma City

A trip a little closer to home saw us head west across I-40 to Oklahoma City. We have been here before but this trip was a little different as we headed there with a couple of friends to experience this city. If you are looking for a cool, vibrant, up and coming city, please consider Oklahoma City for your next trip!

oklahoma city

OKC may not be the first place you think about visiting but there is a lot going on and there are plenty of awesome food spots to check out. By now, you have probably figured out we love checking out local coffee bars and visiting OKC was no different.

best things to do in oklahoma city

Be sure to check out our post on the best coffee shops in Oklahoma City…these alone would inspire us to visit again but don’t let this fool you because there is so many other cool things to do during 48 hours in Oklahoma City!

Summary

Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019! Despite all of the positive events and experiences we enjoyed over the last 12 months, Heather and I will both agree that we are looking forward to a much better 2019. It’s so difficult to go through such huge tragedies and keep motivating yourselves mentally to keep going.

oklahoma city waffle champion

We are both mentally and physically exhausted and so I think the first quarter in 2019 will be a little more relaxing for us. We have a lot to catch up on from our recent trips along with working on our new home but one thing is for sure, our plans to travel in 2019 are just as high as they have ever been before!

I have been scattering some quotes throughout this post and I think it’s only fitting that I end this with the following…

Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored. (Earl Nightingale)

We want to thank you all for the support you have shown us over the last 12 months and look forward to continuing to inspire everyone in the New Year! Happy New Year folks…here’s to an awesome 2019!

Best Things to Do in Jersey, Channel Islands in the Winter

5

For those of you that have spent some time exploring the UK, you may have heard about the Channel Islands, a group of islands located off the south coast of England and much closer to the east coast of France. Visiting the Channel Islands is a popular choice among British tourists during the summer months but we like to do things a little differently and explore destinations in the off-season. We are delighted to be able to share some of the best things to do in Jersey during the winter months!

All too frequently we hear the term “hidden gem” and honestly, it’s probably an overused reference to places scattered across the globe.

There are little gems all around us that can hold glimmers of inspiration. (Richelle Mead)

Places that are frequently visited or overpopulated by tourists are hardly “hidden gems” but when you stumble across a place that most people probably never think about visiting, well it’s fair to see this epitomizes the perfect description for this word.

st helier harbor

Jersey is definitely a place that fits this description given the natural, rugged coastlines, the rich history throughout the island reflected through the architectural gems and a group of locals that will make you feel incredibly welcome!

Jersey in Winter

Visiting any location in the Northern Hemisphere during winter is likely going to offer a more authentic experience. Of course, visitors to iconic cities such as London and Paris will face the tourist traps that are waiting to grab your attention but a place like the island of Jersey is nothing like this during the winter months. Ok, so the weather may not be the best but don’t let this stop you because trust us when we say, this time of the year is a great time to visit this beautiful island.

gorey jersey

Whether you are the type of traveler that prefers the great outdoors or perhaps you prefer a mixture of history, heritage and fine dining, Jersey is home to all of the above and will likely have something to satisfy your interests. From the capital city of St. Helier which is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the island to the lesser known yet equally picturesque villages of Gorey and St. Catherine’s, there is something for everybody to enjoy on the largest of the 8 inhabited islands that make up the Channel Islands.

things to do in jersey

Despite its relatively small size, this island certainly packs a punch with so many cool attractions, delicious upscale restaurants, trendy coffee shops and much more. And all of that is before you head to the coast to enjoy the epic, breathtaking natural scenery!

things to do in jersey in winter

We hope that after reading this guide you will be inspired to visit Jersey, regardless of time of the year. Winter is a time that should be embraced and it’s the ideal time to explore Jersey, especially if you don’t mind wrapping up warm with the prospect of drink later in the day to warm your insides.

mont orgueil jersey

Our recommendations on where to stay, things to do and where to eat are just based on our experiences but we definitely think Jersey will be a place you won’t regret visiting. Let’s take a look at why we fell in love with this beautiful island so quickly.

Where to Stay in Jersey

Although Jersey is a relatively small island at only 5 miles (north to south) and 9 miles (east to west), there are plenty of accommodation options available across various spots around the island. The most popular base for visitors is St. Helier and whether you want to stay in a luxury chain hotel such as the gorgeous Radisson Blu Waterfront or a more local establishment, you will be spoiled for choice.

where to stay in jersey

Our visit to Jersey saw us spend two nights in The Hampshire Hotel. Recognized locally as a “boutique” hotel just a short walk from the heartbeat of St. Helier, this was definitely the perfect place to call home while we explored the island.

the Hampshire Hotels’ boutique charm and quality will be everything you need for an unforgettable stay in Jersey. (Hampshire Hotel)

Owned by Chris and Patricia Robin, who acquired this hotel in 2011, guests will immediately feel like they are at their “home away from home” thanks to the friendly welcome offered by everyone associated with the hotel.

the hampshire hotel jersey

Spacious rooms are available throughout the hotel and decorated to a high standard. A full English breakfast is available daily for guests staying at this hotel and will certainly prepare you for the day ahead exploring Jersey.

the hampshire hotel breakfast

If you fancy a drink prior to heading out to enjoy dinner at one of Jersey’s eclectic range of restaurants, head down to the lounge bar inside The Hampshire to indulge in a cocktail or a pint (or two). For those of you prefer to stay at the hotel, don’t worry because there is a diverse menu available to enjoy dinner and sample the finest “Jersey Catches”.

the hampshire hotel

Location is always one of the most important aspects to consider when booking a hotel. Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about the location of The Hampshire because it’s perfectly situated to not only explore St. Helier but also the rest of the island.

where to stay in jersey

Parking can be a challenge if you head into the heart of St. Helier so we recommend guests should leave their car at The Hampshire and take the short walk into the main town center. The biggest obstacle when arriving at The Hampshire for the first time is figuring out where to actually park but simply head down the narrow road signposted “No Entry” (except for access) and take the first left to find the spacious car park to the rear of the hotel.

Best Things to Do in Jersey

Jersey is a well recognized destination for summer holidays in the UK but don’t let the time of the year influence your decision because there are still plenty of things to do all year round. Let’s take a look at some of the best attractions and reasons to visit Jersey at any time of the year, including the freezing cold depths of winter.

best things to do in jersey

Mont Orgueil

The gorgeous fishing port of Gorey is home to one of Jersey’s most spectacular attractions – Mont Orgueil Castle. For more than 800 years, Mont Orgueil has towered above the picturesque fishing village and regardless of what time of the year you visit Jersey, this is one of the attractions you cannot afford to miss.

mont orgueil castle

At the time of publication of this post, visitors to Mont Orgueil Castle can enjoy this experience for £12.55 (adults – cheaper options available for children and seniors).

Explore one of the world’s finest examples of a medieval castle which has cast its shadow over the beautiful fishing village of Gorey for over 800 years. (Jersey Heritage)

Guided tours are available but exploring Mont Orgueil on your own is equally rewarding. Be prepared to climb a number of staircases before you reach the summit but nothing can quite prepare you for the breathtaking panoramic views that you will see from the top.

mont orgueil castle jersey

If you visit on a clear day, views across the Channel will allow you to catch a glimpse of the French coast but it’s perhaps the intertwining network of rooms, staircases and towers inside that will keep your attention. Some of the staircases can be quite narrow and challenging, so be prepared to take your time and enjoy the full experience at Mont Orgueil.

St. Catherine’s Bay

Take a drive to the north-east corner of Jersey to explore the beautiful area of St. Catherine’s Bay. Jersey’s spectacular rugged coastline is prominent here along with the rest of the north coast but the iconic landmark here that needs to be on your radar is St. Catherine’s Breakwater.

st catherine's bay jersey

Regardless of the weather, get wrapped up with a waterproof (and windproof) jacket and take a stroll along the breakwater. Not only will you enjoy gorgeous views across St. Catherine’s Bay, but you can also learn about the history of this location.

st catherine's breakwater

Construction of St. Catherine’s Breakwater started in 1847 and was designed as a naval station. This was going to be the second largest naval station in the south side of the Channel after the French harbor of Le Havre. Measuring 640 meters in length, the original plan was for this to be longer but the final design is what we can enjoy today.

st catherine's breakwater

This is definitely a great place to take a relaxing stroll before heading back to St. Helier for an afternoon coffee. Alternatively, you can visit the local cafe which offers a selection of drinks and snack items.

Elizabeth Castle

When it comes to iconic landmarks in Jersey, there are not many that are quite as easily recognizable as Elizabeth Castle that sits just a couple hundred meters from the St. Helier coastline. Located on a tidal island which allows visitors to wander across to explore this towering architectural gem (alternatively, you can take the ferry across but be sure to check times to ensure it runs during your intended visit), Elizabeth Castle dates back to 1594 when it first opened its doors.

elizabeth castle jersey

Unfortunately, the castle is closed to the public between November and March, so you may be wondering why we would include this location in a “winter guide to Jersey?” Well, as you can see from our images, this is a spectacular landmark that you should admire from St. Helier and inspire you to book a return trip during the peak season.

elizabeth castle jersey

Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey for over 300 years and similar to Mont Orgueil, it is today an awesome place to explore all the hidden rooms, passageways and bunkers. Just as you can enjoy epic views from the mainland across to Elizabeth Castle, from the summit of this island you can admire the gorgeous St. Helier harbor and perhaps pick out one of your favorite yachts.

st helier harbor

Grosnez Castle

Taking a road trip around the island of Jersey is an experience in itself that you cannot afford to miss. Should you venture to the north-west corner, you will have the opportunity to explore the ruins of Grosnez Castle, dating back to the 14th-century.

grosnez castle jersey

The ruins are open to the public today free of charge and with ample parking available, you could easily use this as the perfect spot to take various hikes along the northern coastline. Climb the concrete steps to pass through the archway and explore the remaining ruins.

grosnez castle

While learning about the history of this French inspired castle, you will find it difficult to keep your focus solely on this because of the breathtaking views available to you. Be careful as you are literally on the edge of a cliff but the panoramic scenes across the English Channel will leave you with memories you will always cherish.

La Corbiere Lighthouse

Visit the south-eastern corner of Jersey to enjoy more epic natural scenery, including the spectacular sight of La Corbière Lighthouse just off the coast.

la corbiere lighthouse

Our visit to this part of Jersey saw us explore the coastline pretty much on our own, largely down to the fact it was a pretty rough day – gusts over 50mph made it tough to even stand up when hiking along the cliffs. But the inclement weather simply added to the experience and it seemed fitting that exploring this rugged coastline was done during these tough conditions.

jersey's northern coast

Visitors can walk out to the lighthouse during low tide in better conditions and explore the landmark that literally translates into English as “a place where crows gather.”

best things to do on jersey

Admiring the waves crashing against the lighthouse and the surrounding coastline was definitely a memorable experience but this is certainly a place we want to re-visit when conditions are a little more favorable to explore the lighthouse itself.

Variety of Jersey Museums

Although Jersey may be a small island, there is no shortage of awesome museums to be found across the island. St. Helier is home to various including the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery, The Maritime Museum and many others.

La Hougue Bie is one of the world’s oldest buildings and is located just a few minutes outside of St. Helier. The museum dedicated to displaying remnants of this neolithic site along with housing the island’s Archeological and Geology museum is well worth visiting.

If you have any interest in the history of the World Wars, head to the Jersey War Tunnels and Underground Hospital. Once an active hospital, this location has since been transformed into a museum dedicated to sharing the story of this network of underground tunnels.

Best Places to Eat in Jersey

While Jersey is home to an abundance of attractions, it is also worth noting that there is no shortage of restaurants to ensure this island can be renowned as a “foodie haven”. Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or enjoy a more luxurious dining experience in a formal setting, Jersey’s eclectic dining scene is such that you will not be left with a shortage of options.

best places to eat in jersey

Let’s take a look at a couple of our favorite dining experiences, ranging from the budget friendly options to those that perhaps should be left for a special occasion e.g. A Christmas dinner celebration is the perfect time to go!

Cafe Louise

In the shadow of Mont Orgueil Castle, the gorgeous village of Gorey is home to a number of local cafes and restaurants that deserve to be featured in this guide. One of our favorites for a quick lunch is Cafe Louise, locally owned and with great service in addition to the delicious menu options that are always available.

Home cooked soup accompanying a fresh sandwich is the perfect snack before clambering to the summit of Mont Orgueil. Whether you opt for this light snack or prefer one of the daily specials, Cafe Louise is an ideal spot to take a break from exploring Gorey.

Locke’s Coffee & Grub

We will be putting together a guide of the best coffee shops in Jersey because we quickly fell in love with the coffee scene throughout the island, particularly in St. Helier. Our favorite spot was Locke’s Coffee & Grub, not only because the coffee (and food) was so good but also because the owners are amazing and the story behind this coffee shop is so cool.

locke's coffee and grub

The unique atmosphere inside this trendy coffee shop oozes urban farmhouse decor and probably because our own home back in the States follows a similar style, we quickly fell in love with this place.

A variety of traditional (and specialty) coffee beverages are available, each served to perfection and with a number of fresh pastries and cakes to choose from, Locke’s is the ideal place to enjoy a late morning snack or afternoon tea.

Dating back to 1997 when it first opened its doors, Sumas Restaurant is one of the best places to enjoy a fine dining experience across the island of Jersey. Located in the harbor of Gorey, Sumas is a popular restaurant choice for both locals and visitors alike…and based on our experience there, it is definitely with good reason!

Summary

Jersey may not be the first place you think about visiting when you are considering a winter getaway but after heading across to the largest of the Channel Islands, we can 100% attest that this is a great place to visit at any time of the year.

Of course, visiting during the summer months will open a few more opportunities in terms of opening hours and certain places that close for the season but as you can see, there are plenty of things to explore and places to eat regardless of what time of the year you choose to visit.

things to do in jersey

We are excited about the prospect of visiting Jersey again in the near future to hopefully head across to Elizabeth Castle and also enjoy some more of the breathtaking natural landscapes that can be found throughout the island. For outdoor lovers, there are not many places that offer as many spectacular hiking/biking trails as the island of Jersey!

Even if extreme outdoors adventure isn’t really your thing, be sure to explore Jersey’s awesome coffee and “foodie” scene because there are plenty of options that you won’t be able to resist. Welcome to “The Island Break” – a phrase that perfectly epitomizes the Jersey experience!

Eurail First Class Travel – How to Explore Europe in Luxury

Traveling around Europe by train is one of those experiences that should really be on everyone’s bucket list. Many people think that flying business class (or first class) is something they will never get to experience because of the extortionate airfares and honestly, I don’t blame them! We have flown first class once between Singapore and Melbourne and although you can see the difference, can you really justify the price difference? With train travel, you have the choice between first-class and second-class travel. We want to share our Eurail first class travel experiences based on our recent 10 day adventure across Europe.

travel europe by train

As technologies and transportation methods evolve, the concept of traveling by train is unfortunately diminishing as travelers across the globe look to find cheaper, more efficient ways to get around. However, what people frequently forget is that traveling by train is actually a great way to save time but not only that, you can enjoy an experience unlike any other form of transportation.

I am going to go out on a limb with the following statement… “Exploring Europe by train is 100% the best way to get around and enjoy experiences you would otherwise miss out on” – yes, there are a bunch of low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair and if you are really pushed for time, these are great, affordable options.

But if you go that route, you miss out on exploring hidden gems like Colmar in the Alsace region of France, countries like San Marino in the heart of Italy and most importantly, those cultural interactions with locals across the continent.

first class european train travel

Let’s take a look at why exploring Europe by train and in particular, why the benefits of purchasing a first-class Eurail pass is the best decision for any upcoming European travel.

Eurail First Class Travel Benefits

I want to start by taking a look at what some of the key benefits are when you purchase a first-class Eurail pass. This post isn’t going to delve into the details of why purchasing a Eurail pass in general is the best option (in our opinion it is but you can read all about the benefits of Eurail here), rather it will focus on why first-class train travel is a step about second-class and why you will immediately feel like you are in luxury.

Let’s start with a quick caveat…every train/operator across Europe is different and so the standards that you will find are very different dependent on where you are traveling. For example, first-class travel in Switzerland and Italy is going to be very different to first-class travel in Hungary or Slovenia!

But that’s all part of the European rail journey adventure because you get to experience all of these differences. Rather than worrying about the quality, why not embrace the uniqueness each country offers and with a first-class Eurail pass, you can at least guarantee you are going to get the best each operator offers!

first class vs second class

1. Comfort

Let’s start with probably the most obvious and the aspect that is likely going to convince most folks to purchase first-class passes. The comfort levels available inside a first-class cabin/carriage is far superior to what you will experience in second-class.

Ok, let’s be realistic and reiterate that the difference between first and second class on a train isn’t quite what you experience on an airplane but it’s still noticeable enough to justify paying the extra price for a first-class pass.

Individually “customized” and “adjustable” seats are pretty standard inside all first-class cabins and you will likely experience more space (more on this later) with legroom and armrests. Extra wide tables are popular amenities inside a first-class cabin ensuring that you have plenty of room to catch up on work or relax with your favorite book.

The Frecciarossa high-speed trains in Italy are perhaps the most impressive that we have experienced, though for these you will be required to pay a small reservation fee each time you use them in addition to having the Eurail pass in-hand.

2. Availability

You are generally going to find that first-class seats are readily available, at least that is what we found during our recent trip across Europe. There will be occasions, such as during prime-time travel around 8-9AM and 4:30-6PM where it’s difficult to find any seats but overall you will find that more “locals” tend to opt for second-class travel as it’s cheaper and they are more concerned with reaching their destination rather than relaxing and admiring the scenery.

To reiterate what I referenced earlier…

In some countries first class simply means you have a better chance of finding a seat, whereas in other countries it means you’ll feel like royalty. (Eurail.com)

3. Peace and Quiet

Traveling in a first-class cabin generally means more “business” type people will be surrounding you, so it’s goes without saying they will likely be working away on their laptops and not holding many conversations.

The quiet cabin along with extra comfort in the seats will provide the perfect setting to catch up on some sleep or to simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery passing by you. Grab a snack courtesy of the onboard service available on many trains and get ready for a relaxing adventure across Europe.

4. Stay Connected and Fully Charged

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, there is a pretty common requirement out there in society…we all have to stay connected 24/7! And this is where traveling in first-class helps because the majority of these cabins are fitted with power sockets to ensure every device is 100% charged throughout your train journey and beyond.

Some trains are equipped with wi-fi connectivity which is another awesome benefit of traveling by train. Depending on the country, you may be fortunate to have free access otherwise a small surcharge will be required regardless of which class you travel in.

USB access in your seat or directly above you is another perk that cannot be disregarded. Another option for charging your phone or tablet without having to worry about pulling out all those long charging cables and travel adapter.

These are just a few examples of how traveling first-class is beneficial over second-class. If you need a little more convincing, take a look at this graphic offered by Eurail comparing the two classes.

Justifying the Cost Difference

Ok, so you are starting to get an idea by now that there are plenty of perks traveling first-class versus regular second-class. However, one more aspect is always going to be considered by travelers looking at Eurail passes – the cost difference!

golden pass train route

Every Eurail pass is different and prices are always fluctuating because of seasonal rates and also discounts that are frequently available (that’s right folks, don’t forget to frequently keep checking Eurail’s website and social networks for notice about discounts!). However, let’s take a base Eurail Global Pass based on current prices (at the time of publication of this post), just to give you an idea of price comparison.

Type 1st Class 2nd Class
5 Days (1 Month) €468 €376
7 Days (1 Month) €570 €458
15 Days Continuous €597 €480
22 Days Continuous €768 €616

So, in the grand scheme of things, the price difference between 1st and 2nd class travel on a train is not massive. Is it worth paying the extra to enjoy the benefits of 1st class train travel? That’s entirely up to you but in our opinion, the answer is 100% yes!

Where to Travel First Class in Europe

The simple answer to the above question is EVERYWHERE and ANYWHERE! It really doesn’t matter where you choose to travel with your Eurail pass because you are going to reap the benefits the moment you step on the train.

where to travel in europe

Ok, so if you stay around Western Europe, the train system is a little more “developed” and “modern” so the benefits are going to be more obvious rather than in the Eastern European nations. But don’t let that stop you from heading further East because this is the BEST opportunity to explore some of those countries that may otherwise never have found their way on to your bucket list.

Here are some of the adventures you could experience should you choose to follow our route but honestly, we highly recommend checking out either our website (click on Destinations and Europe for some inspiration) or Eurail’s site here for popular routes.

These are just a couple of examples of experiences you can enjoy and the beauty of traveling by first-class is that when you arrive in each of your chosen destinations, you will be fully relaxed and energized to explore everything there is to see there.

Summary

The benefits of Eurail’s first class pass are just one of the reasons why we consider taking the train to explore Europe is the best method of transportation. It’s tough competition out there to navigate around Europe when you could feasibly rent a car and drive or hop on one of the many low-cost airlines scattered across the continent. But neither of these options give you quite as much flexibility, comfort and relaxation as a first-class cabin does.

Our recent trip to Europe was one of the toughest trips we have taken, mainly for personal reasons. After losing my mother quite suddenly just a few weeks prior to this trip, we were very apprehensive about heading back across the pond to take on the adventure of traveling around Europe by train. But the moment we stepped on our first train in Geneva, Switzerland, we realized we had made the right decision because that was our way of dealing with such a tragedy and helping us relax.

We hope after reading this post you will be convinced to purchase a first-class train ticket and experience the very best of Europe just like we have done. We have enjoyed this on three separate occasions, each time exploring a different region and visiting new countries. It’s hard to pick a favorite route or a favorite destination but all we can say is that this type of travel is what will quickly give you the wanderlust to want to explore more!
