Here are some numbers that will put this deal into perspective! The average retail rate for five-star hotels in Las Vegas in December is a whopping $432 per night (does that answer the opening question I posed on this post as to why many of us never experience five-star luxury?).

Now imagine spending only $50..that’s right, $50 for the same hotel and experience! This isn’t a watered down experience where you get just the bare essentials, you will enjoy everything you would if you paid that full price. Plus the best part is you save more than $350 per night per room.

An interesting fact from this part of the survey though is that millennials, 34 and younger are nearly three times as likely to have stayed in a five-star hotel during the last five years than their 55 and older counterparts.
Sticker Shock Remains an Obstacle – The high-cost of a five-star hotel is understandably the number one reason why folks don’t stay in high-end luxury accommodation options! If we don’t think we can afford it, why even consider them?
Holiday Away from Holiday Season – It may sound strange but 58 percent of the survey takers indicated that they needed a break away from the hustle and bustle of holiday season! A getaway to Las Vegas for $50 per night sounds like the perfect tonic right?

These were just a couple of the findings but it’s certainly an eye-opener and definitely inspiration for Hotwire to offer their “Million Dollar Sale” in Las Vegas!

During our 48 hours in Killarney (we actually spent a little longer but much of our time was spent at the TBEX Europe conference!) exploring the town and further afield, we discovered why this town is such a thriving destination that should be on everyone’s radar.

As you venture away from Dublin, the real beauty of Ireland can be found and as we started out on our epic Ireland road trip, we had every intention of discovering what life in Ireland is really like. As we share our experiences in Killarney and County Kerry in general, we hope that you will be inspired to add this region to your next Ireland adventure.

The inherent beauty throughout this area is such that you cannot help but fall in love with it. Whether you are an avid landscape photographer that will immediately fall in love with the Wild Atlantic Way and Ring of Kerry or perhaps a Lord of the Rings fanatic, this part of Ireland offers plenty for every type of traveler. Where to Stay in Killarney?

Killarney is home to a plethora of accommodation options. From luxury hotels to budget hostels, you can be sure to find something that will fit your needs. We initially planned to stay at the Gleneagle Hotel which is conveniently located next to the INEC Conference Centre but just before heading to Ireland, we stumbled across an opportunity that we couldn’t resist.

The Belmont is a 3,100 sq/ft period-style home that is available for rent courtesy of Luxquisite Property Lettings. Five bedrooms, four bathrooms and can easily accommodate up to eleven guests! The luxury, modern design of the interior offers a distinctive blend to the period-style architecture on the outside.

Local Killarney Culture

Ok, so you have found the perfect place to stay in Killarney but now you are ready to head out and explore everything this town has to offer. Don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed because there are plenty of things to do that will keep you occupied for several days…and that’s just within the town center!

Killarney Architecture

Let’s start with some of the finest examples of gorgeous architecture throughout the town. Ireland is a proud nation of faith and this is typified by the number of places of worship that are scattered throughout the country.

Killarney is home to several beautiful churches and cathedrals that are iconic landmarks even for folks that are not particularly religious but want to admire the inherent beauty of these architectural masterpieces.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral that dates back to 1855 when the doors first opened. This cathedral is situated in a fairly unique location in terms of it being away from the hustle and bustle of Killarney town center.

The setting is typical of a priory (in the heart of a field) rather than a cathedral but this distinctive feature combined with the Gothic Revival style architecture ensures visitors flock from all parts to see this majestic sight.

For those of you that want to experience a church in the center of Killarney, St. Mary’s Church of Ireland is another architectural gem worth visiting.

Known locally as the “Church of the Sloes,” which actually is the meaning of the town itself – Killarney, this is the perfect spot for locals and visitors alike to experience a traditional Irish place of worship while exploring Killarney.

Killarney Brewing Company

Are you ready to sample some of the finest local craft brews in southwest Ireland? Head to the Killarney Brewing Company and experience a delicious array of brews while listening to an expert share the history of this company and the process behind creating these local specialties.

What was once the original Killarney Mineral Water drinks facility has since been transformed into one of Ireland’s most sought-after independent craft breweries and it’s no surprise that this company considers themselves to have “Ireland’s finest range of craft beers.”

Killarney’s Finest Pubs

Whether you spend a day or a week in Killarney, your experience will likely involve some time in one of the many pubs throughout the town.

There is certainly no shortage of pubs to be found and regardless of whether you prefer the traditional Irish pub setting or perhaps something with a little more flamboyance, Killarney is home to a variety of public houses that you need to visit.

Murphy’s Bar, Courtney’s Bar and J.M. Reidys are all examples of some of the popular choices around the town but there is really only one pub that we want to recommend. The Shire is everything you could wish for in a pub yet it is the unique features that make this such a popular attraction for visitors to Killarney

If you love The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, you will immediately fall in love with The Shire. After visiting “The Shire” in New Zealand, we instantly knew that this Lord of the Rings themed pub was going to be an amazing experience.

The design of The Shire throughout the interior immediately transforms you into Middle-earth while you can never be sure when the next character out of The Lord of the Rings will pop up to welcome you into their natural habitat.

Perhaps sampling one of the delicious brews known as Gandalf, Frodo and Bilbo will convince you that The Shire is the best place to relax in Killarney but in our opinion, it’s the friendly service that you can expect from Ollie and the bar staff that will immediately make you feel at home and part of the Shire family!

Enjoy Fine Local Cuisine

Killarney is home to a number of restaurants to satisfy everyone’s appetite. If you are looking to experience a stereotypical Irish dish such as Fish and Chips or Shepherd’s Pie, why not head to one of the aforementioned pubs for a delicious pub meal. Alternatively, there are a number of restaurants located throughout Killarney that will likely attract your attention.

The Porterhouse Restaurant is an original gastropub that not only features a distinctive blend of local meat and seafood dishes but also a vegan menu to ensure everyone is catered for.

From gourmet burgers to traditional Irish lamb stew, the Porterhouse restaurant offers an eclectic array of dishes that will entice you through the doors.

A full bar featuring specialized whiskeys and gins along with local craft brews is yet another attractive reason for visiting this restaurant.

Looking for something a little more unique while in Killarney? Rob’s Ranch House is the typical Texas-style ranch restaurant that you would expect to find in the Southern United States but certainly not Killarney, Ireland!

We just had to experience this and honestly, the food was excellent! The blend of Irish and southern style cuisine worked well and the decor throughout this restaurant was a great addition.

Killarney National Park

Not only is Killarney a really cool town to experience because of the local culture, it’s also in a great location on the doorstep to Killarney National Park. The reality is, anyone visiting Killarney can experience the best of both worlds – urban and rural in the same trip!

A few minutes drive or bike ride from the town center across the River Flesk and you are immediately transformed from life in the town to the heart of a breathtaking natural landscape.

Be sure to read what we experienced during our Killarney National Park tour. Ross Castle is a gorgeous spot to relax and enjoy the sunset with the lake in the background while the Ladies View is perhaps one of the most iconic scenes throughout County Kerry.

A breathtaking panoramic scene looking throughout the valley is a real sight to behold and if it’s good enough for Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting, well it’s good enough for us to experience!

If you love waterfalls as much as we do, taking the short stroll from the Ring of Kerry road to Torc Waterfall will be a worthwhile experience. Don’t expect to stumble across Niagara Falls but regardless, I don’t think you will be disappointed with what you see!

Day Trip to Dingle

A visit to Killarney not only gives you the opportunity to experience a beautiful town and national park but it also opens the door to exploring the wider region of County Kerry. A number of day trip options are available including a full experience around the Ring of Kerry but we have another favorite spot that we would love to recommend – Dingle!

If you have seen the movie Leap Year, the town of Dingle will be a familiar name, despite the major geographical flaws in the movie. However, regardless of whether you compare yourself to Amy Adams, the Dingle Peninsula is definitely one of the spectacular spots in Ireland that you cannot afford to miss.

A quirky and quaint fishing village is how I would explain Dingle yet perhaps the real highlights await you when you venture along the Wild Atlantic Way on the Slea Head Drive loop that you can easily spend several hours experiencing.

Take some time to appreciate the beauty surrounding this rugged landscape before heading back into Dingle to enjoy some of Ireland’s best ice cream at Murphy’s!

Summary

Killarney may not be the first destination you associate with Ireland but after spending a few days here, we can well and truly attest that this is a location that needs to be on your radar.

When it comes to Irish culture, there are not many spots around Ireland that offer everything that Killarney does. It’s the perfect location to explore the outdoors, while at the same time offering the opportunity to enjoy a typical Irish pub experience over a pint of Guinness or Gandalf’s Ale if you follow our recommendation and visit The Shire!

Who is ready for an end of season trip to the beach? That’s right, it may be November but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan a trip to the gorgeous sands available on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. In fact, we would argue that this is actually the best time to arrange a vacation along this stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico. If a plethora of spectacular beaches, a variety of fun-filled activities and of course, delicious seafood sounds appealing, we are convinced our guide to 3 days in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach will be the perfect tonic to justify booking a late season trip to the beach.

We love sharing our experiences and providing recommendations on things to do, places to eat and where to stay. Our most recent visit saw us stay in the heart of Gulf Shores at the breathtaking San Carlos Condominiums by Young’s Suncoast Realty and Vacation Rentals. These spacious condos are family-friendly and offer spectacular oceanfront views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Whether you are intrigued by the master bathrooms with jetted tubs or the private balconies, the main benefit of staying at San Carlos is that you are literally minutes from the heartbeat of Gulf Shores. Why? I think the infamous “Bananas in Pajamas” is a huge selling point along with the Bloody Mary bar where you can create your favorite concoction. For those of you looking to sample “unique meals with a spoonful of southern flair,” we are convinced that you will immediately fall in love with Brick and Spoon!

10:00 AM – Arts & Crafts at The Clay Studio

What better way to start your Gulf Shores and Orange Beach adventure than by sampling something you would likely never expect to experience in this part of Alabama! Head over to The Clay Studio and learn how to make your very own pottery. That’s right, find the artistic genes inside you and create a masterpiece.

Regardless of your skill level, you can be sure you will have an amazing time. Glassblowing, admiring fine artwork and learning about this gorgeous location are all alternative options but this is definitely a spot worth visiting.

11:30 AM – Shopping at The Wharf

A little late morning retail therapy at The Wharf in Orange Beach is a perfect way to unwind. Grab a cup of your favorite espresso at Southern Grind Coffee House before exploring some of the finest boutique shops in the area.

The Ferris wheel is a great way to enjoy scenic panoramic views of the Gulf Coast while a number of excursions set sail from The Wharf Marina if you prefer to head out on a cruise.

2:00 PM – Late Lunch at Bayes Southern Bar and Grill

Following your morning of retail therapy and arts/crafts, you will be raring to head to Bayes Southern Bar and Grill to enjoy a late lunch. If you visit between 2-6 PM (Mon-Fri), you can enjoy Happy Hour where you can indulge in delicious appetizers and some of the finest drinks along the Gulf Coast.

It’s tough to resist any of the menu options but we have a real soft spot for the Duck and Andouille Egg Rolls and the Crawfish Beignets. Why not consider sampling a variety of dishes and sharing among your party…there will be plenty to go around and it’s a great way to enjoy the best of Bayes delectable menu!

3:30 PM – Relax on the Beach/Enjoy Amenities at the Condominium

Regardless of where you choose to stay, you can be assured that there will be plenty of gorgeous beaches or amenities at the condominium complex waiting for you to enjoy. After an action-packed morning, you can spend a few hours in relaxation mode before heading out to enjoy a late dinner at one of the finest spots along the Gulf Coast.

7:00 PM – Dinner at Cobalt Restaurant

For seafood connoisseurs, Cobalt Restaurant in Orange Beach is undoubtedly one of the best spots to visit. Situated in the perfect location across the Perdido Pass, Cobalt offers spectacular waterfront views for those wanting to sit outdoors while enjoying the delicious cuisine available.

Our top recommendation is to sample a little bit of everything! The oysters at Cobalt are delicious and are a great choice for an appetizer while the Blackened Redfish is one of our favorites on the eclectic menu. If you are looking for an alternative to seafood, consider the Peppercorn Encrusted Filet.

Regardless of your preference, you won’t be disappointed and you certainly won’t leave disappointed!

9:00 PM – Late Evening Stroll on the Beach

After a delicious evening meal, there is no better way to burn a few calories than taking a late evening stroll along the beach. You certainly won’t be alone as this is a popular activity for folks looking to enjoy the sound of the ocean before heading to bed after a long day of fun in the sun!

Day 2: Prepare for Action-Packed Itinerary

8:00 AM – Morning Walk on the Beach

If you are willing to wake up early, there is nothing quite like enjoying the sunrise in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. It’s pretty spectacular but if you are not a morning person, be sure to enjoy a sunset which is equally breathtaking!

You will never be far from the 32 miles of beach on the Gulf Coast. Every mile is gorgeous and I cannot think of any better way to start the day than taking a morning stroll here.

9:00 AM – Breakfast at The Ruby Slipper

Worked up an appetite after walking a couple of miles on the beach? Although we already recommended our favorite breakfast spot, The Ruby Slipper is another of our preferred places to enjoy what we consider to be the most important meal of the day.

If you love Eggs Benedict, we would argue that The Ruby Slipper has the BEST collection to choose from. The Shrimp Boogaloo Benedict just sounds pretty cool right but I would argue that opting for The Peacemaker (you can choose any 2!) comprising of the Eggs Cochon and Chicken St. Charles are the best.

10:30 AM – Bike Riding Through Backcountry Trails

One of the best aspects of visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the spectacular natural landscape away from the beach. That’s right, you read that correctly, the gorgeous Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex is an amazing place to enjoy a variety of distinctive ecosystems.

What better way to experience this than by renting bikes and heading out into the heart of these various trails. With 15 miles of trails to choose from, you can be sure that there will be something for everyone. You never quite know what wildlife you will stumble across during your visit to the backcountry!

2:00 PM – Lunch at Sassy Bass Crazy Donuts

Remember…you are on vacation! It’s really crucial that you think like this before heading to our recommended lunch spot. Sassy Bass Crazy Donuts is a unique experience unlike anywhere else that we have visited. Who would have thought to combine a hamburger with a donut?

It may not sound particularly appealing but it actually works pretty well. Avoid thinking about calories and consider sharing one of these delicacies (did I really just say that!) because there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.

3:00 PM – Explore Historic Fort Morgan

It’s all about learning about the history of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach when you head to the historic location of Fort Morgan. Located in the mouth of Mobile Bay, Fort Morgan is a bastion fort that played an integral role in both the War of 1812 and the American Civil War.

Visitors can enjoy self-guided tours and this is certainly an attraction that will help you learn way more than you could ever have imagined before heading to Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

6:00 PM – Dinner at Luna’s Eat and Drink

Trying to pick just a couple of locations for dining in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a challenge in itself. Although we recommend heading to Luna’s Eat and Drink to sample more decadent cuisine options, there are so many choices out that allowing a little spontaneity may be the appropriate plan of action.

Hand-crafted dishes ranging from delicious Deviled Eggs for an appetizer to Stuffed Gulf Grouper for your entree are recommendations we cannot wait to sample again. For those of you looking to enjoy a beverage or two, Luna’s is home to a variety of craft beers that cannot be found anywhere else along this stretch of Alabama coastline.

7:30 PM – Dessert at The Yard Milkshake Bar

I mentioned there may be a sweet treat thrown into the itinerary. Head to The Yard Milkshake Bar and allow yourself to indulge in one of the magical creations. I think the images pretty much tell the story but only after experiencing one of these majestic milkshakes will you realize just how amazing they are.

8:30 PM – Evening Stroll on the Beach

Head back to the beach for a relaxing walk along your favorite stretch of coastline. By this point, you won’t even need to follow this itinerary because you will know that the gorgeous beaches are calling your name. Alternatively, head back to your condo and relax with your favorite beverage on the balcony and listen to the waves crashing against the shoreline.

Day 3 – Wind Down and Relax

8:00 AM – Breakfast at The Southern Grind Coffee House

I always love to start my day with a coffee and there is no better spot to find great espresso drinks than The Southern Grind Coffee House. Two locations, either at The Wharf or the one we chose for breakfast at Indigo ensure that if you are in Orange Beach, this is a spot you won’t want to resist.

Whether you are visiting for a hearty breakfast choice or simply a pastry accompanying your Caramel Macchiato or Americano, you cannot help but enjoy the decor throughout the coffee house, perfectly themed for the location on the Gulf Coast.

9:00 AM – Relax on the Beach or Enjoy Spa Amenities

Hopefully, our itinerary has included enough time for a little relation on the beach or at your condominium. For those of you opting to stay at The Beach Club, be sure to take advantage of the full-service spa amenities available or those at Turquoise Place will surely not be able to resist floating along the lazy river.

12:00 PM – Lunch at Tacky Jack’s

Renowned as “the best seafood restaurant in Alabama” (at least by the restaurant), Tacky Jack’s is a vibrant and trendy spot to enjoy lunch. We have been fortunate to visit here for breakfast but the lunch menu is equally appetizing.

The gorgeous views overlooking the waterfront ensure visitors will always want to come back but we would argue that the food itself is enough to justify a return visit. Be sure to try the Mexican Garbage nachos but be warned, there is plenty here to share among several guests!

1:00 PM – Shopping at Tanger Outlet Mall

If some of those boutique stores at The Wharf were a little expensive, we have the perfect alternative if you are still interested in getting your retail therapy fix while staying in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Head to the Tanger Outlet Mall in nearby Foley and enjoy a plethora of outlet stores where you can be assured to find an awesome deal!

The challenging aspect will be not wanting to spend the rest of the day at the Tanger Outlets because we still have another amazing activity that you won’t want to miss.

4:30 PM – Dinner Cruise at Hudson Marina

Can you think of any better way to wind down your visit to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, than by heading out on a dinner cruise onboard the Perdido Queen? Thanks to Hudson Marina, you can enjoy the best dinner cruise in Orange Beach!

This is not a sales pitch, it’s reality…this is an AMAZING experience. Live entertainment, delicious cuisine and of course, a breathtaking landscape. The perfect scenario is when you head back and you can “hopefully” enjoy an amazing sunset. It’s one of those experiences you will cherish forever and definitely in our opinion, THE best way to finish your trip.

8:00 PM – Late Evening Sweet Treat at Matt’s Ice Cream

Did you really think we would let you leave without sampling another of our favorite ice cream spots? Head to Matt’s Ice on Gulf Shores Parkway and indulge in homemade ice cream. Every flavor is delicious so we will just leave it you to decide which is your favorite!

You cannot go wrong here and the difficult aspect will be figuring out which you want. A quick tip…be sure to sample several flavors before making a final choice.

We told you that we were ready to provide an action-packed itinerary in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. However, we feel that we have put together a nice blend of action and relaxation but perhaps most importantly, a variety of delicious cuisine options that will surely leave you hungry after reading this post.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the perfect haven for a getaway, regardless of how long you choose to stay. From 48 hours to several weeks, this is a location we don’t think you can get bored of because there is so much to do. We were incredibly fortunate to stay at the Belmont property just a few minutes walk from the heart of Killarney town center and we want to share our experiences to hopefully inspire you to consider a visit in the near future. Luxquisite properties are ideal for large families that want a self-catering option or perhaps for a group of friends looking to enjoy a getaway in the beautiful County Kerry region of Ireland.

The Charleston – 3,700 square feet (Sleeps 13 – 6 Bedrooms & 5 Bathrooms)
The Rockport – 2,600 square feet (Sleeps 11 – 5 Bedrooms & 5 Bathrooms)

Prices vary throughout the season and there is generally a minimum two-night stay required at each of the properties (you can contact Ollie Favier, the property manager about alternative options). Although 300-550 Euros per night may seem a little expensive, if you are planning a getaway with friends, it can work out as a very affordable option.

The Belmont

The moment we pulled into the driveway at the Belmont House, we knew that we were in for a pretty special experience. Located directly next to the Charleston House, these two gorgeous properties are difficult to miss as you drive along Upper Lewis Road.

The real treat awaits you when you open the front door and enter this breathtaking mansion. Although it’s not necessarily portrayed as a “mansion,” it’s fair to say that compared to other places we have stayed around the world, this is definitely a word we wanted to associate with this property.

We stayed four nights at the Belmont along with our fellow travel blogging friends, Lauren from Justin Plus Lauren and Ashley from A Southern Gypsy. This was the PERFECT place for a group of travel bloggers to not only explore Killarney and attend the TBEX conference but also as a base to explore other parts of County Kerry.

Killarney National Park, the Ring of Kerry and a day trip to the Dingle Peninsula are just a few other experiences you can enjoy when you stay here.

Exquisite Luxury Furnishings

As you take a walk around the house, you are constantly reminded of the luxury accommodation option that you have chosen for your stay in Killarney. Whether it’s the contemporary leather Italian furniture in the living rooms or the gorgeous quartz kitchen island, there is no lack of intricate detail throughout Belmont House.

Let’s take a look at the various areas throughout Belmont House that you will likely want to experience during your stay. I have to admit, for four travel bloggers, Belmont House was a little overwhelming for us in terms of size and “smart” technology but it was an experience we won’t forget for a long time!

Living Rooms

Two spacious living areas offer guests the opportunity to relax in either the formal front living room area or the larger open plan space in the back.

As mentioned, gorgeous Italian furniture offers comfortable seating options while high definition Smart TVs combined with Sky satellite feeds ensures you can watch all of your favorite channels after a day exploring the region.

A home cinema surround sound system is built into the “family room” area and at the touch of a single button, everything springs to life!

High-speed wireless internet is available throughout Belmont House but if you are trying to catch up on some work (as travel bloggers this was extremely helpful!), find a relaxing spot on the sofa or at the desk and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

Kitchen

If you love a kitchen with modern amenities, Belmont House will leave you speechless! Top of the range Siemens stainless steel appliances can be found throughout the kitchen and everything you need to create your “home away from home” is present.

The ultra-modern cabinetry throughout is the perfect accompaniment to the appliance range.

You may not notice it at first but if you are staying at Belmont House during a cooler time of the year, the geothermal underfloor heating will prove to be extremely beneficial.

Bathrooms

Belmont House offers four spacious bathrooms, each with unique, modern amenities that provide a relaxing experience for guests.

Why not relax in the jacuzzi bathtub in the main bathroom or enjoy the walk-in showers that are an integral part of the bathroom experience?

The gorgeous chrome fittings are a standard feature throughout the bathrooms and certainly add to the “luxury” feel portrayed in this house. The heated towel rails are a nice feature after enjoying a relaxing shower but regardless of which bathroom you use, you can be sure that everything you need will be waiting for you.

Bedrooms

With four bedrooms on the second floor and another in the attic, there is no shortage of space at Belmont House to cater for all the guests.

Deluxe orthopedic style mattresses can be found in all the bedrooms and the challenging aspect will be determining which bedrooms each guest has.

The reality is, it doesn’t matter because all of the bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and offer a unique experience to ensure you have a great night’s sleep!

Outdoor Relaxation

It’s not just the interior of Belmont House that will attract your attention. Aside from the spectacular welcome that you receive when you pull into the driveway, at the rear of the house is a breathtaking patio area that is perfect for relaxing on a late summer’s evening.

For those of you that want to enjoy some outdoor cuisine, take advantage of the Green Egg barbeque and large patio furniture set.

Whether you are staying for just a couple of nights or a longer period of time, take advantage of all the “homely” amenities throughout Belmont House. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and look forward to returning to County Kerry in the near future to enjoy what we now consider to be the best self-catering option in Killarney.

Perhaps next time we visit we will figure out how to make the most of the smart home features or maybe we should just accept that Belmont House will always be smarter than us!
