Best Weekend Getaways in Texas

Texas may be renowned for scorching hot temperatures year round, BBQ, and of course, stereotypical Longhorn cattle, but it’s also home to a plethora of destinations that are the ideal spot for a weekend getaway. We have been fortunate to explore all of the following spots, and while we know this is not an exhaustive list of all the best spots worth visiting, we would argue that collectively these provide a good overview of all the best things that Texas has to offer.

  • Austin
  • Dallas
  • Fort Worth
  • Houston
  • San Antonio
  • Waco

Of course, we are always wanting to hear about other destinations in Texas and as we continue to explore the Lone Star State further, we will add more locations to this post.

Austin

Frequently recognized as the “live music capital of the world”, Austin offers an abundance of attractions and reasons to justify a weekend getaway in this part of Texas. Whether you are planning a trip to Austin to watch a live concert, or perhaps you are just wanting to explore this beautiful, trendy city, there are ample things to do once you arrive.

austin street art

The street art scene in Austin is one of the coolest we have experienced anywhere in the world, and definitely helps showcase not only the rich culture around the city but also how local artists are able to express themselves freely and embrace the creative skills of this form of art.

For those of you that already reside in or close to Texas, you may find that Austin is the perfect road trip destination from a nearby Texas city. For example, we thoroughly enjoy the trip from Dallas to Austin, not only being able to spend 48 hours in each destination but also visiting Waco en route and of course, the iconic Buc-ee’s gas stations that are synonymous with Texas.

austin texas

Head to the Texas Capitol to explore the gorgeous architecture before heading outside of the downtown area to experience the natural attractions of the city, McKinney Falls State Park, Barton Springs Municipal Pool, and Zilker Park (if you don’t want to head outside of the city).

While the association of “Keep Austin Weird” may not give the most positive impression, it’s one that is rather appropriate given that Austin embraces the collection of funky shops, colorful street art murals, secret speakeasies and unique neighborhoods. Of course, a trip to Austin wouldn’t be the same without visiting the Museum of the Weird!

Dallas

Ready to enjoy the perfect weekend getaway in Dallas? With a plethora of history, culture, and attractions, Dallas is a global metropolis that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe to experience everything this city has to offer.

sixth floor museum at dealey plaza

Let’s start with the historic attractions in downtown Dallas. Head to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to learn all about President JFK’s assassination here in 1963. While Dallas is frequently associated with being the location of this tragic event, this symbolic location is one that is well worth exploring to learn more about what happened there.

Dallas is home to one of the most iconic sporting stadiums in the world – AT&T Stadium! Home of the Dallas Cowboys and frequently hosting other sporting events, this is well worth visiting if you have the opportunity to catch a Cowboys game during your visit to the city. For a more tranquil experience, why not consider heading to the Dallas Arboretum which is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular botanical gardens.

One of the best ways to explore Dallas in a weekend is to utilize the Dallas CityPASS – a great way to experience a variety of the best attractions in and around the city, while also enjoying huge discounts on the bundle ticket price.

Fort Worth

We would like to thank Rob and Ann from TravelLatte who are locals of Fort Worth and the perfect folks to share their insight on what this destination is the perfect Texas weekend getaway!

If your idea of a North Texas getaway is The Big D in D-FW, you should know that the other side of the Metroplex is very Fort Worth-while! Call us biased, but let us give you a taste of what we locals call Funky Town.

Notorious Wild West outlaws like the Sundance Kid helped the young city earn a very different nickname, Hell’s Half Acre. Today it’s the genteel Sundance Square (named for the infamous outlaw), and it’s a great place to stay and explore. Check into the stately art deco Sinclair, a beautiful hotel in among the Square’s shops and restaurants, right on Main Street.

sundance square fort worth

Across Sundance Square is the incomparable Sid Richardson Museum of Western Art. Fort Worth’s world class galleries also include the Kimball Museum of Modern Art, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, in the Cultural District.

Nearby, witness the world’s only daily Longhorn cattle drive at Stockyards Station, and you’ll understand why this is called Cowtown. Spend a couple of family-friendly fun hours exploring the Stockyards before having dinner with a true local legend, Joe T. Garcia. You have not been to Fort Worth until you’ve eaten at this iconic Tex-Mex restaurant.

Start Day Two at Funky Town Donuts, near the hotel. Grab a Pecan Pie Bullseye to go (you can thank us later), because you’re going to hang out with another herd of animals at the Fort Worth Zoo! USA Today calls it the best in the country, but brace yourself, it’s 64 acres of family fun.

Then it’s over to the Foundry District for a much-deserved coffee break at local fave, Trinity Coffee House. Do yourself a favor and order the Blueberry Pancake Steamer (again, you can thank us later), then wander across the street to Inspiration Alley, one of the city’s two world class Street Art installations. For the other, drive over to the Design District, the state’s only shipping container office park / street art district. Yes, that sounds strange. Still wonder why we call it Funky Town?

fort worth street art

That’s a pretty full weekend getaway, but we’ve only scratched this town’s surface! Something for everyone may seem like a worn-out claim, but Fort Worth lives up it.

Houston

Houston is another perfect Texas city worth visiting if you are looking for the ultimate weekend getaway destination. Commonly known for being home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center and the city’s contributions to space exploration, Houston offers much more for visitors regardless of their interest in NASA. The eclectic neighborhoods across the city offer a diverse and unique perspective on the local cultures that thrive here, and from the vibrant Theater District to the historic Museum District, there are ample opportunities for everyone to explore.

johnson space center nasa houston

Did you know that Houston was home to North America’s largest underground tunnel system? That’s right, Houston’s corporate buildings are connected via 7.5 miles of tunnels. If you prefer to stay above ground, why not head on a tour of the local food scene to experience an eclectic collection of authentic Tex-Mex, BBQ, Asian cuisine and much more.

For those of you that prefer to explore urban parks when visiting cities, head to the gorgeous Hermann Park, home to 445 acres of downtown green space. The dancing Mecom Fountain is a spectacular sight at night, while visitors can head to the Houston Zoo or perhaps the Butterfly House at the Houston Museum of Natural Science during the day for a fun-filled family experience.

museum of natural science

Houston CityPASS is another great way to explore the best things to do during a short weekend getaway, with the city’s iconic attractions all included and this all-inclusive pass making it easy to build an action-packed itinerary around the city.

San Antonio

When it comes to Texas destinations that offer a diverse array of attractions, there are not many spots more iconic than the city of San Antonio. Whether you are intrigued by the prospect of visiting the historic Alamo, before venturing out into the surrounding neighborhoods to experience the San Antonio Mission Trail, or perhaps you want to relax with a little retail therapy and indulge in decadent local cuisine at the San Antonio Riverwalk, there is something for everyone.

san antonio mission

Experience the city’s historical significance through a trip to the 18th century Alamo attraction before heading over to 750-ft. Tower of the Americas to capture breathtaking panoramic views across the city. The Japanese Tea Gardens are another iconic attraction that enhances San Antonio’s reputation of being a global metropolis, and this area is definitely one of the best spots to visit if you want to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

san antonio street trolley

San Fernando Cathedral is considered the historic geographic center of the city and along with being an obvious tourist attraction, the primary purpose is to serve as a community gathering place and a symbol of the role of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The Central Library is another spot worth exploring, and whether you are intrigued by the thought of exploring the interior, it’s the “enchilada red” exterior color that makes this an eye-catching architectural masterpiece that you cannot avoid if you are in the area. If you are ready to enjoy an epic weekend in San Antonio, you can be sure that you will be rewarded with an awesome experience.

Waco

For those of you that are avid watchers of the popular TV show, Fixer Upper, you will know that the city of Waco is famous for this along with the Magnolia brand that the Gaines family have become synonymous for developing. Visitors to Waco can explore all of the iconic Magnolia locations such as the Market, the grain bins also known as the Magnolia Silos, the Silos Bakery, Coffee shop among many other attractions.

magnolia market waco

A trip to Waco is so much more than just Magnolia…check out the Dr. Pepper Museum, a collection of the best coffee shops in Waco, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum and other attractions that make Waco the perfect destination to visit on a weekend getaway.

Visitors can also enjoy one of the city tours which is a great way to explore some of the historic attractions around the city. The Classic Tour, River Cruise or a Private tour are all options to consider if you are intrigued by the prospect of exploring those iconic Fixer Upper homes.

waco street art mural

If you are ready to get away for a hour or two from the hustle and bustle of city life in Waco, head over to Cameron Park to enjoy a 416-acre municipal park near the downtown area. This is the perfect spot for locals and visitors alike to relax and enjoy Texas life while indulging in a favorite espresso from those awesome coffee shops.

Summary

Texas offers a variety of amazing destinations that showcase why the “Lone Star State” is such a perfect spot for a weekend getaway. Whether you are inspired to visit one of the iconic cities covered in this post, or perhaps you prefer to visit one of the lesser known locations, you can be sure that there will be plenty to experience and much more that will likely encourage you to want to make a return trip.

We would like to reiterate our appreciation to Rob and Ann from TravelLatte for sharing their local insight into the best things to do in Fort Worth. While it is true that it frequently lies in the shadow of Dallas, this is definitely a location that deserves much more recognition and we are excited to visit in the near future to experience some of those amazing local spots!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The capital city of Holland – Amsterdam, is an excellent all-year-round destination, including winter months when the city hosts many exciting events and festivals.

Amsterdam is an excellent place for the foodies with a great selection of cafes where you can have a break to warm up after strolling through the city’s many picturesque canals and bridges. Try one of the pancake houses, which is a Dutch speciality.

amsterdam netherlands

Amsterdam also has many gripping museums which are great for visiting in the cold months, including the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House Museum and more quirky ones such as Amsterdam Sex Museum.

In December, the city transforms into a winter wonderland with various Christmas markets, and ice rings scattered around different areas. The most popular one is the Ice Village Amsterdam that lures with the explosion of festive colors and scents of Christmassy treats, including the Dutch special – freshly baked stroopwafel with sweet caramel filling. For winter sports enthusiasts, RAI Centre builds an indoor winter wonderland during the festive season with real snow, ski slopes, sledging tracks and a lot more fun activities to enjoy.

There is also a yearly Light Festival during which the city of Amsterdam becomes a fairy tale with giant lit structures and twinkling lights everywhere.

Athens, Greece

Despite many people flocking to Greece in the warmer months, Athens is actually at its best in winter. While it can be a bit wet in winter, the temperatures are generally relatively mild, hovering around 12 degrees Celsius.

This cooler weather is perfect for exploring the city, especially visiting the ancient Greek ruins, which can get uncomfortably hot and crowded in the summer. If you want to enjoy the wonders of the Acropolis at your leisure, winter is the time to do so. The clearer air also means you can enjoy beautiful views from both the Acropolis and Mount Lycabettus on fine days.

athens greece

Winter is also a good time to try one of the local hikes – try walking along the Sacred Way in Kerameikos Cemetery or taking a stroll through the National Gardens. There’s always great food in Athens, with many tavernas serving excellent meals. Athens Central Market is well worth visiting, especially if you want to cook a couple of meals yourself.

If it does rain during your stay, that’s the perfect time to visit some of Athens’ remarkable museums and art galleries. Some favorites include the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum, although there are many others to choose from. And, if you’re lucky enough to get some snow during your stay, make sure you take advantage of the opportunity to marvel at the Parthenon veiled in white.

Bergen, Norway

Situated on the southwestern coast of Norway Bergen is the country’s second largest city. Bergen is a wonderful city to visit at any time of year and is often described as the gateway to the fjords due to its proximity to some of Norway’s most beautiful areas.

In the winter, however, Bergen has fewer hours of sunshine and somewhat colder temperatures than other times of year. It is, nevertheless, a wonderful location for a short holiday with lots of things to do and see.

bergen norway

Main attractions in Bergen include the UNESCO World Heritage Area of Bergen called Bryggen which is the site of the Hanseatic wharf. This area is full of gorgeous, wooden buildings, narrow streets, and cozy coffee shops. The Bergen Fish Market (Torget I Bergen) which has existed since the 1200s is also worth a visit.

For spectacular views of the city take the funicular up Mount Floyen. The funicular leaves from the city center a few minutes’ walk from Bryggen and takes a few minutes to get you to the top. There is a restaurant and cafe at the top too which are prefect for a coffee stop on a cold winter’s day.

Norway is not a cheap destination so be prepared for the price of food and drink in Bergen. It can be more cost effective to eat at fast food outlets rather than break the bank at a restaurant. For good coffee and cake try Det Lille Kaffe Kompaniet located in one of the wooden houses in the alleyways of Bryggen.

Cascais, Portugal

The Portuguese Riviera town of Cascais is located on the Atlantic Ocean. This seaside resort town becomes a sleepy and relaxing getaway during the cooler months of winter.

You can still enjoy a walk or bike on the paredão along the beaches and visit the Boca do Inferno and shops at Casa de Guia. Feeling ambitious? Continue to Guincho beach. You’ll be treated to breathtaking scenes as brave surfers trying to catch the perfect wave. While you’re there stop at Forteleza do Guincho for a Michelin starred meal where the food competes only with the view.

cascais portugal

A stroll through the historic city center of Cascais will have you checking out the sculpture garden in the Citadel Art District, the Parque Marechal Carmona and the Cascais Cultural Centre. Stopping here for lunch or a coffee break is highly recommended.

The city center has quaint shops, museums and many restaurants that will beckon to you with the smell of the famous grilled Portuguese chicken and seafood. Try the piri piri chicken at the Jardim dos Frango or a plate of fresh golden bream at A Nova Estrela.

Stay at the Grande Real Italiá Hotel & Spa for a gorgeous ocean view and tip top service. Take advantage of the spa facilities and let yourself truly unwind.

Cascais is the perfect spot to stay and still see more of Portugal. A quick train ride along the coast brings you to Lisbon and a 15-minute drive to the fairy tale city of Sintra. Easy drives to Nazaré and the wall-city of Óbidos are also well worth a visit.

Chatsworth is a stunning stately home located in the Peak District National Park UK. The expansive estate grounds are free to visit and walk around affording excellent views of the house, surrounding hills and the local wildlife. The grounds are home to a herd of stags which can often be seen roaming the grounds on icy winter mornings.

The beautiful Chatsworth house, dating back to around 1553, is richly adorned with furniture, decorations and artwork that celebrate its rich history. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the capital of Ireland and a beautiful city to visit in the winter. The weather in Dublin can be quite unpredictable and although Dublin gets some cold days due to the wind and humidity, the winter season is usually mild with beautiful sunny days. This makes it a great destination to visit in the winter if you’re not a big fan of the snow and really cold weather.

Dublin offers a variety of activities and historical visits. Lots of must-see attractions are indoor which is perfect in case you get caught in the Irish rain or need a break from the wind. Trinity College is also a must-see both for its architecture and the visit of the Book of Kells library. On a beautiful sunny day, rent a bike to visit Phoenix Park and the local herd of deer that lives there.

In December, there are lots of Christmas things to do in Dublin. From the festive Christmas markets to sightseeing Christmas lights, Dublin becomes magical. One mandatory stop is the Temple Bar pub in the Temple Bar district. This traditional and historical pub is decorated every year with lights and a Christmas tree. It is the perfect place to warm up with a hot drink or a traditional Irish coffee while listening to live music and enjoying the Irish Christmas spirit!

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is a good idea all year round, but this medieval city looks particularly pretty in winter. Lights dance above popular tourist streets such as George Street, brightening up the shopping street and upmarket bars stretched along it. The independent stores and coffee shops of Cockburn are given a sparkly highlight with Christmas themed lights strung above them. Victoria Street, also known as Diagon Alley, gets some star treatment too.

Visitors book into the best Edinburgh Christmas hotels, decorated inside and out with trees, baubles and lights. Their restaurant menus shift into winter mode, serving up hearty seasonal dishes and putting on party nights with turkey and tinsel for business people.

edinburgh scotland

Edinburgh’s Christmas Market takes over Princes Street Gardens with stalls selling mulled wine, sizzling bratwurst and handmade gifts. However, there’s one venue on everyone’s bucket list, The Dome. This former bank is now ‘the’ place to enjoy a cocktail around its towering Christmas tree which takes center stage behind the bar.

Revelers also aim for seats at the pop-up venue on top of the Waverley Mall. Previous years have seen this location erect tents and burn fires to keep drinker’s cozy. If you prefer to dine in a warm restaurant with a view of the festive fun, head to Twenty Twenty.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

There is no doubt about it, one of the best European winter destinations is the Canary Islands. Situated in between Spain and North Africa, the Canaries gain from lush warm weather all year round. While each island has its own merit, Fuerteventura is a great choice of location for your winter vacation.

As the second biggest Canary Island, there is a lot to do in Fuerteventura and it is also easy to get to nearby Lanzarote for a day trip or extended stay. The island is vast, and tourists will only often stay in one part. One of the most popular spots is Corralejo at the northern tip.

Fuerteventura canary islands

There are many fun things to do in Corralejo, Fuerteventura and some of them are even better in winter! This region has the famous Parque Dunas de Corralejo, which are extensive sand dunes that you can enjoy. A short walk away is Corralejo beach which has its iconic stone wind breakers you can sunbathe in, or waves that you can wind surf. Another exciting activity is to take a sand buggy excursion off-road across the volcanic mountains across the island.

When you’re just wanting to relax, head to El Campania shopping resort or the nearby harbor. There are many restaurants with great food and even better views. In the evening, several places across the harbor also offer fondue which is a tasty and fun way to start or end your night.

Iceland

If you are looking for the best European winter destinations, look no further than Iceland!! After all, it is called the land of fire and ice for a reason and what better time to visit than when it is, well, icy?

There are so many things to do in Iceland in Winter. First? Go look for the Northern Lights! This is one of the most popular reasons to visit at this time of year. You can also visit one of the many hot springs in Iceland and of course the famous Blue Lagoon. You can even see the Northern Lights from the Blue Lagoon if you are lucky.

Iceland Northern Lights

If you are into hiking, you can hike through glacier ice caves which are only possible to visit during winter. Once you are done, head back to Reykjavik and eat at Noodle Station, a very affordable and tasty noodle bar to warm your soul after being out in the cold air all day!

Innsbruck, Austria

You could get away with calling Innsbruck, Austria the ultimate winter destination. Flanked by infinitely skiable hills, offering a myriad of cold-weather activities, blessed with a walkable city centre that’s bursting with historical attractions, and hosting plenty of festive events, there’s no better place to be in Europe in winter.

Visiting Innsbruck in winter is ideal for those who want a hassle-free way to savor the delights of a European city break, while also enjoying the fun that comes from being on the slopes. The city is renowned for its ski fields, some of which can be reached from a funicular that departs right from the city centre and whisks you up the hill within minutes. Once you reach the top, several runs await.

But if skiing isn’t your thing, simply settle into the iconic Cloud 9 bar and enjoy the view instead or treat the kids to some free sledging on gentle slopes. Back down at ground level, warming cafes await to serve up Austrian classics such as cheese dumplings and the local favourite, Tyrolean speck, alongside warm mulled wine or sweet schnaps.

Once you’re suitably warmed up, head along to Altstadt, the town’s historical center to take in the famed Golden Roof, which is decorated with over 2,000 gilded copper tiles, the beautiful medieval streets, and ornate buildings. It goes without saying that it’s also a fabulous place to shop – especially during the Christmas period when seasonal markets pop up all over the city.

By Nadine Maffre from Le Long Weekend

Italian Dolomites, Italy

The craggy snow-covered peaks of the Italian Alps beckon many a ski lover to northern Italy and the Italian Dolomites. It’s one of the best winter destinations in Europe! The Dolomites are a spectacular destination at any time of year, but they take on a whole new beauty when they’re shrouded in snow, and skiing is the name of the game.

You don’t have to be a seasoned skier to enjoy it here, however. Besides downhill, there are other styles of skiing like cross-country, freestyle, and freeride skiing and beginners can hone their craft with lessons at every resort. Or you can strap on a pair of snowshoes or find a cleared hiking trail and enjoy the stunning landscape.

italian dolomites

For the more adventurous, snow trekking through the mountain passes or snow kiting might be more your speed. Think of yourself downhill skiing only attached to a sail or kite. For those who prefer snowboarding, Alta Badia is the place to be with specially designed parks and schools to take a lesson or two.

When it’s time to head inside, the popular Rifugio Emilio Comici in the middle of Selva di Val Gardena is the place to warm up with some hearty South Tyrolean food. Look for a small white building with light blue shutters and a lively crowd.

In this beautiful valley you’ll find lots of quaint B&Bs and upscale hotels, but Garni Floreal Di Kelder Berta Paula is excellent and a great value to boot.

By Lori Sorrentino from Italy Foodies

Lake Bled, Slovenia

In summer Lake Bled in Slovenia is packed with European vacationers attracted by the scenic mountains, lakes, and outdoor activities. Slovenia is worth visiting all year round, but it’s in winter that Lake Bled really transforms into something spectacular – a fairy-tale-like magical winter escape void of the peak season crowds.

On the iconic Lake Bled, most notable for its small island with an attractive church and cemetery in the middle, instead of rowing, there’s ice skating when it freezes over. If you’re lucky enough to visit over Christmas, then Bled also has cozy winter markets with mulled wine, twinkling fairy lights and a whole lot of hygge.

lake bled slovenia

If there is one place beside the lake you must see its Bled Castle, a stunning medieval fortress perched atop a precipice, with incredible views overlooking the lake and beyond. The coffee shop in the lower courtyard is ideal to sit back and enjoy the views with a hot drink and to try the famous Bled cream cake. No trip to Slovenia is complete without tasting it!

Snow in the winter is common in Slovenia so skiing in the Julian Alps is a popular and budget-friendly activity compared to its neighboring European countries such as Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. Or if it’s a mild winter, even if there’s no snow in Lake Bled you should at least have a scenic backdrop of snow-capped mountains from the nearby Triglav National Park.

Lake Bled is a scenic, safe, and relaxing winter getaway with flights you can often snap up for only a few pounds from London or other major European cities.

Lapland, Finland

Lapland is the ultimate winter destination – magical, full of intrigue and feels as though you’ve stepped into a fairytale. Spread across largely Finland and Sweden, but also into Russia and Norway this is the land of the nomadic Sami and full of folklore and tradition.

There is so much to enjoy in this area of the world, number one if you’re traveling to Lapland with kids then high on the list will be visiting Father Christmas in his home, which is a special experience no matter what age you are. Everyone will enjoy taking a sledge ride pulled by husky dogs which is an incredible experience, as is a reindeer sleigh ride as they meander gently through the snowy forest.

lapland finland

Lapland is also one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights which is a truly spectacular experience. Come here to ski, Nordic skiing is very popular here as well as downhill skiing and weaving in and out of trees that look so otherworldly is a wonderful experience. This is a great place to try the local food, particularly the interesting berries including crowberries and the evocatively sounding (and tasting) cloudberries.

Temperatures here in winter, particularly above the Arctic Circle can get incredibly low, in the minus mid-twenties and below, so be prepared with seriously warm clothes. One trip to Lapland in winter will never be enough, it is a truly special place and should be on everyone’s must-visit list.

Lucerne, Switzerland

When it comes to choosing the best European winter destinations, the beautiful medieval city of Lucerne in central Switzerland ticks all the boxes for me.

If you’re fortunate to be in the city after it has snowed, wandering around the cobbled streets of the Old Town and across the Chapel Bridge, with a dusting of snow on its roof, is one of the not-to-be-missed things to do in Lucerne.

There are plenty of museums to visit in Lucerne should you prefer to stay indoors.  The Swiss Transport Museum is just one that’s worth a visit. With planes, trains, cars, boats, cable cars and all modes of transport on display, the museum offers something for every visitor. There’s even an IMAX theatre, a planetarium, and the Swiss Chocolate Adventure Museum, all under the one roof.

Lucerne Switzerland

If it’s outdoor activities you’re after, Lucerne is the perfect base for visiting one of the nearby mountain peaks. Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Titlis, and Mt. Rigi are just three mountains that can be easily reached from the city. All three are ideal for skiing and snow sports or just for admiring the views.

Another great excursion is a cruise on Lake Lucerne. Viewing the snow-capped rooftops of the city with a backdrop of snowy mountain peaks from the water is something very special.

Whatever you decide to do during the day, be sure to head to Old Swiss House Restaurant on Lowenplatz for a delicious dinner of Wiener Schnitzel cooked right beside your table. For over 70 years, the restaurant has been serving its specialty dish this way and it is sure to leave you with fond memories of Lucerne.

Malaga, Spain

For winter sun it’s hard to beat Malaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol. With daily temperatures around 17°c winter is a good time to visit Andalucia and, in Malaga, you’ll certainly find plenty to do.

The warm temperatures are ideal for walking the Senda Litoral de Malaga (or at least part of it as the full coastal path runs for over 200kms from Nerja to Manilva). If it’s history you’re after then Malaga has it in spades with the Alcazaba, 15th century cathedral, and the Castle of Gibralfaro which has outstanding views over the city and coastline.

malaga spain

Art lovers will find plenty of museums to keep them occupied, including the Picasso Museum which celebrates the work of one of Malaga’s most famous sons. There’s also a thriving street art scene in and around the neighborhoods of Lagunillas and SOHO.

The highlight of any visit to Malaga in winter though is the Christmas lights display, especially the sound and light show which takes place on Calle Larios three times each evening. Join the crowds in Plaza de la Constitucion to enjoy this festive spectacle and, while you wait, grab a seat at Café Central for a café con leche.

Later enjoy a tapas tour around the historic streets of Malaga’s old town, and make sure not to miss a visit to the popular bodega, El Pimpi. Who knows, maybe one of the owners, Antonio Banderas, might be there too!

Moscow, Russia

Moscow in winter is magical and looks as though it were plucked straight from a fairytale. There are many dazzling Christmas lights displays, as well as Christmas markets that start in late November and run to the end of February. While the cold temps give it a bad rap, as long as you know what to pack for Russia in winter you’ll have an amazing trip with beautiful sights and fewer tourists.

The most picturesque place to visit in Moscow during winter is the Christmas market that is held in Red Square. Here you can shop and admire the snow-covered St. Basil’s Cathedral, with a mulled wine in hand. Red Square also hosts a large ice-skating rink at this time of year as does Gorky Park. Be sure to purchase your tickets online ahead of time before hitting the rink, though!

moscow russia

Visiting Moscow in winter also presents the opportunity to see a performance of the famous Nutcracker ballet performance at the Bolshoi Theatre. Be sure to book online the moment tickets go on sale, though – Nutcracker tickets can sell out within minutes!

When it comes to dining in Moscow, there is no shortage of amazing options. One of the most extravagant restaurants in Moscow is Turandot. The baroque décor of this restaurant is unforgettable as its Pan-Asian cuisine. Next door to Turandot is also Café Pushkin – which features amazing traditional Russian dishes with some of the best service in Moscow. For a less formal atmosphere, featuring delicious Russian food – be sure to head to Mari Vanna.

Neuschwanstein, Germany

If you’re looking for a unique winter destination, there is nowhere quite as magical as the real-life Disney castle- Neuschwanstein in southern Germany.

Neuschwanstein Castle inspired Walt Disney’s creation of his Cinderella castle and is perched on top of a hill, with breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. It’s easy to visit at any time of year, either with your own vehicle or as part of an organized tour but expect it to be busy, especially if there is snow on the ground as everyone wants that perfect winter photo.

neuschwanstein germany

If you’re driving or motorcycling in Germany, there is secure parking nearby and plenty of hotels and Bed & Breakfast options in the town of Fussen. Don’t forget to buy your entry tickets at the bottom of the hill before you go up as you can’t buy them at the top.

If you want the best photographs of the castle exterior, walk up the hill past the castle to Marienbrucke bridge. I would recommend going here first, before your castle tour, so you can get photographs before the crowds which build steadily throughout the day. Going as early as possible is the best plan.

Once you’ve explored inside the castle (don’t miss the Throne Room or the amazing fairy grotto), head back down the hill to Ludwigs – their strudel was delicious!

Palermo, Italy

Located in the southern part of Italy, Sicily is stereotypically known for being super-hot throughout summer. In the winter, this beautiful region cools down to the 50s (10-15 degrees Celsius). The mild weather is accompanied by mostly sunny days, making it a great time of year to visit this Mediterranean island.

One major advantage of going to Palermo, Sicily’s capital city in the winter is that it is off season. There are way fewer tourists, and fewer crowds. This means you’ll find cheaper prices for hotels and excursions, and you’ll avoid having to wait in lines for museums and other attractions. If you want to do any outdoor day trips from Palermo, like climbing Mount Etna, it’ll be way more comfortable in the mild weather.

Palermo Italy

Palermo is home to many famous architectural sites, traditional markets, shopping, restaurants, and more. One essential site to visit is Quattro Canti, which is a Baroque square that was built in the early 1600s. From there, it’s a short walk to Fontana della Vergogna. This beautiful fountain was built in Florence, and then transferred to Palermo in 1574.

Another essential spot to visit is the Palermo Cathedral, which was built in 1184. For just a few euros, you can climb several steep flights of stairs to the roof of the cathedral, where you’ll take in gorgeous views of the city. These are just some sights that you must see in Palermo while visiting during the winter! And, while you’re there, be sure to try some of Sicily’s local cuisine, including pasta con le sarde, arancini, cannoli, and granita.

Prague, Czech Republic

When it comes to the best European winter destinations, Prague certainly tops the list! While the charms of Charles Bridge and Old Town Square are gorgeous year-round, visiting them when they are covered in a light layer of pillowy snow is dream-like.

Prague is a must-visit destination in the winter, especially for the holiday season. There are at least 8 incredible Christmas markets in Prague that you can visit during your stay, each with its own personality.

The most popular Christmas market is hands-down the Old Town Square market. The Old Town Square is stunning on its own, but when the twinkle lights dazzle overhead, live music plays from the stage, and the smells of roasted ham waft your way, it is enchanting.

prague czech republic at christmas

The Prague Castle Christmas Market is another iconic market nestled in the Prague Castle complex. There are lovely ciders to enjoy as well as tasty treats like trdelnik (a cinnamon sugar dough wrapped around a spit and cooked until crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside) or gingerbread.

Aside from exploring the Christmas markets, winter in Prague is a perfect excuse to go on a food tour and tuck into all the hearty food and delectable soups the city has to offer. Some restaurants you’ll need to visit include Cafe Imperial for the best khulida soup and Lokal beer hall for a few pints and pub food!

Prague is a lovely city, but it really feels magical during the Christmas season, making it perfect for a European winter trip!

Split, Croatia

The second largest city in Croatia, Split is a perfect winter destination if you want to see one of the most popular places in the Adriatic without the crowds. Another great advantage of visiting Split in winter is lower prices on tours and accommodations, as well as the lack of mass tourism.

Split has enough things to do in winter, and while it might be too cold to go to the beach and catch some sun, you can still hop on a boat and visit some of the nearby islands such as Hvar to see what it looks like without tons of tourists. Overall visiting Croatia in winter is a good idea because it will show you what the country used to be like before it became super popular with tourists.

split croatia

Of course, don’t forget to explore the beautiful city of Split. You can take a walk around the city’s historic Old Town, get a guided tour of the Diocletian Palace, or climb the Klis Firtress outside of the city or hop on a bus to historic Trogir – these are just some of the things you can do in Split during winter and have a blast.

If you are going to visit Split and surrounding areas in winter, keep in mind that the transportation options are limited between the city and some of the surrounding towns because of the lower demand. From Split, you can catch buses to Dubrovnik, Zagreb, and other major destinations around the country.

Venice, Italy

Many places emulate the great and beautiful Venice, but there can only be one Venice in the world. Tucked away in the northeastern shoreline of Italy, is the charming and ever popular city on water.

Picture winding cobblestone alleyways, curving water canals, romantic baroque architecture and fantastical events. Venice is a picture to behold. Made even better by the mass exodus of tourists, mild weather and upturn of festivities, Venice in the winter is even more enchanting.

venice italy

Known for being the ‘city built on water’ with its grand canals, gondola rides, delightful bridges, and deep Venetian culture, it doesn’t get any better than Venice for a European winter destination. One of the best things to do in the winter and a must for your Venice itinerary, is the Venice Carnevale. The city comes to life with elaborate and colorful masks and costumes as well as boat parades down the Grand Canal and mask parades in the famous Piazza San Marco.

After watching the festivities, grab a hot chocolate at the oldest cafe in Venice, Caffe Florian. Although pricey, it’s a quintessential Venice experience. Wander around Saint Mark’s Basilica to see the four horses and check out the Rialto Bridge. If you’ve come prepared with winter jackets and scarves, climb aboard a gondola for the ride of a lifetime.

If you decide to visit Venice at Christmas time, you won’t be disappointed. The quaint alleyways shine bright with festive lights and sounds.

Vienna, Austria

For a truly memorable white Christmas, one of Europe’s most enticing capitals is Vienna. Thanks to its 2500+ years of history, the city has gorgeous palaces, cathedrals, fountains, and public artworks at nearly every turn. Covered in a light dusting of snow, they look all the dreamier. The views might remind you of snow globes; in fact, it was in Vienna that these Christmas icons were invented!

One of the best things to do in winter in Vienna is to visit one of the city’s 20+ Christmas Markets. Several of these are set amongst the city’s finest architectural gems, including the markets at Rathaus, Karlskirche, Stephansdom, Schönbrunn Palace, and Belvedere Palace.

vienna austria

For something spectacular, head to Wiener Eislauf-Verein – at 1000 m2, it is one of the world’s largest skating rinks. Nearby, take a stroll through Stadtpark to see statues of Vienna’s great artists and composers, including Strauss and Schubert, with a snowy backdrop. To see a wintery Vienna from above, take a ride on Wiener Riesenrad, the oldest still-running Ferris wheel in the world.

vienna austria christmas markets

When you get the chills, warm up in one of Vienna’s traditional coffee houses, so important to Viennese culture that they are listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Some of the most elegant options include Cafe Prückel, Cafe Hawelka, and Cafe Landtmann.

Warsaw, Poland

If you are looking for the perfect place to spend winter in Europe, then look no further than a trip to Warsaw Poland. This beautiful Polish city is perfect in any season but in the winter months, it comes alive, especially before Christmas. Warsaw is world known for its spectacular Christmas light displays that light up the city.

From lanes filled with fairy lights to massive installations, you can find a perfect scene for the best Christmas photo ever! You may even bump into a certain jolly man for an extra special photo at one of the small but gorgeous Christmas markets dotted around the Old Town area.

Warsaw Poland

If you are unable to make a trip to Warsaw before Christmas, then you are still in for a treat. While much of the city was destroyed in WWII the old town area has been reconstructed to look as much like it originally did. You will find some of the buildings still have gouge marks in them left from bullets and shells even though the colors of the build hide them a little.

Sitting in Castle Square you can enjoy the hearty and warming food after you have wandered the Old Town area. Many people are drawn to Pierogi (Polish dumplings) but Bigos, Rosol or goulash with potato pancakes are also amazing dishes to try. If you prefer street food, then Zapikanka and Gofry will keep you going all day long. If the weather turns bad head straight to an E. Wedel Cafe and warm up with a delightful hot chocolate or coffee and try not to leave without buying their decadent chocolate.

There are so many things to do in Warsaw for people of all ages and budgets. The Royal Castle is stunning and a beautiful replica of the original that was also destroyed in WWII. You can visit the Barbican, Sigismund’s Column, The Little Insurgent and some other monuments which are all located in the Old Town area and are free to see.

Just a short bus ride from the Old Town area you can visit some of the best museums. The Polin Museum and The Warsaw Uprising Museum are brilliant in learning the impact WWII had on Poland. From here you can also visit the Palace of Culture and Science building. The top floor provides stunning views over the city of Warsaw.

This post is in partnership with Hotels.com.

The state of Texas may be known for being the second largest state in the United States, the live music capital of the world and home to delicious Texas style BBQ, but did you also know that the Lone Star State is home to a rich colonial heritage and distinct history throughout the state? If you are looking for the perfect Texas getaway to learn all about this rich history and much more, look no further than experiencing an epic weekend in San Antonio.

While 48 hours in Texas is hardly enough time to barely scratch the surface given the magnitude and size of the state, spending a couple of days exploring the city of San Antonio is perhaps the perfect length to enjoy a rich historical tour of the missions, explore the gorgeous downtown River Walk district and gain a better understanding why this city is such a popular location for visitors from all corners of the globe. From an eclectic range of global cuisine, including a myriad of awesome local spots, to a blend of modern and historic attractions, San Antonio is the perfect weekend getaway destination in Texas.

san antonio mission trail

Let’s take a look at how to enjoy an action-packed weekend in San Antonio.

Where to Stay in San Antonio

Finding the perfect place to stay in San Antonio will come down to a few factors that you will need to consider – budget, location and style. San Antonio is home to a vast array of modern and historic establishments, ranging from regular chain style hotels to luxury boutique accommodation options.

With a number of options to choose from in the Riverwalk neighborhood, this is perhaps the ideal spot to explore the downtown vicinity but there are a number of other neighborhoods worth exploring such as Stone Oak, Live Oak, North San Antonio and Balcones Heights.

The Emily Morgan San Antonio, while affiliated with the Hilton brand, is perhaps one of the most impressive in terms of architectural grandeur and history given that it dates back to 1924 when it was originally constructed as the Medical Arts Building on the Alamo Plaza.

Weekend in San Antonio Itinerary

As with any city around the world, trying to experience all the iconic attractions can be a challenge when you only have 48 hours. Our recommendations focus on the rich history and heritage associated with the Spanish Colonial era in Texas, along with some of the other iconic spot’s worth visiting across the city, but we always encourage folks to allocate some time to add some spontaneity to their visit.

weekend in san antonio

Spontaneous travel is when you uncover hidden gems that perhaps are not listed in guidebooks, and we have found this to be the best way to enjoy a new destination as a local would. Here are some of the highlight attractions worth visiting during your weekend adventure in San Antonio:

  • San Antonio Spanish Mission Tour – The Alamo
  • San Antonio Spanish Mission Tour – San Jose
  • San Antonio Spanish Mission Tour – San Juan Capistrano
  • San Antonio Spanish Mission Tour – Concepcion
  • San Antonio Spanish Mission Tour – Espada
  • River Walk District
  • San Fernando Cathedral
  • Tower of the Americas

The Alamo

A trip to San Antonio wouldn’t be the same without visiting the most iconic of all the Spanish Colonial settlements – the Alamo. It’s where the Battle of the Alamo started in 1836 and today is the most frequently visited tourist attraction across the city. While this landmark is certainly catered to the large number of visitors that want to explore this historic location, there is a lot to learn here and it’s the perfect place to start on your San Antonio Mission trail adventure.

The Alamo is to texans what washington d.c. is to americans, a historical landmark that definitely deserves a look see…

STEPHEN A, LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (TheAlamo.org)

The history of the Alamo dates back to its original construction in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero. Over 300 years of history can be found here, and what better place to learn about Spanish Colonialism in Texas than the birthplace of this at the Alamo.

the alamo san antonio

Visitors to the Alamo can enjoy either a guided tour of the battlefield or a FREE self-guided tour. The self-guided option is definitely the option we would encourage, especially if you are planning a relatively short visit to ensure you can experience the rest of San Antonio, but there are definite benefits of the guided tour option.

the alamo in san antonio

For the free self-guided tour, visitors will need to reserve their free ticket to enter the church ahead of visiting at the following: The Alamo Free Tickets.

Mission San Jose

Established in 1720, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was an iconic mission organization and a major social establishment for the Hispanic Catholic community. It is the largest of all missions in San Antonio and during the height of its activity, it provided shelter to over 300 Indians.

mission san jose

The San Jose church is home to an active service every Sunday and regardless of when you visit this historic location, it’s a cool experience to walk around and admire the architecture of many of the original buildings and structures that are still standing today.

mission san jose san antonio

The intricate details of the church is particularly impressive and the continued restoration of these buildings is a crucial aspect of ensuring preservation of such an integral part of Spanish colonialism throughout not only San Antonio but across the state of Texas.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

One of the smaller missions in San Antonio, yet still filled with plenty of rich history, heritage and character, is Mission San Juan Capistrano. The quaint church still stands as an active Catholic parish and visitors can enjoy exploring the original colonial ‘square’ which once would have been the integral heart of this community. The bell tower is one of the iconic landmarks at this mission and you cannot afford to miss the Romanesque archway at the entrance gate.

mission san juan capistrano

For those of you that want to add a little hiking to your visit, head over to the nearby Yanaguana Trail which runs along the original San Antonio River. This “oasis” in the middle of San Antonio is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life before heading back to explore more of the San Antonio Mission trail.

mission san juan capistrano

Mission Concepcion

Mission Concepcion is frequently considered the most aesthetically appealing of all the San Antonio colonial settlements, primarily because much of the architecture can still be seen in its original form. Dating back to its construction in 1755, Mission Concepcion appears very much as it did over two centuries ago and stands proudly as the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States.

mission concepcion

As you make your way around this historic site, pay a quick visit to the visitor center to stamp your mission passport which is definitely a great keepsake to reminisce on your experience visiting these locations across the city. A self-guided tour of Mission Concepcion gives you the opportunity to explore inside the church and admire the intricate details of the design that dates back almost 300 years.

mission concepcion

Mission Espada

Mission Espada is located the furthest south of all the settlements on the San Antonio Mission trail. While this mission was first established in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas, it was in 1731 that it was transformed to Mission San Francisco de la Espada and located in its current position in the San Antonio River area. The nearby Espada Aqueduct is an iconic attraction and much of the original irrigation system still operates this along with the dam.

mission espada

Unfortunately, a fire destroyed many of the buildings on this settlement in 1826 and only the chapel, granary, and two of the compound walls remained standing. Self-guided tours are available throughout regular hours and visitors can also enjoy guided tours on the first Saturday of each month.

River Walk District

The San Antonio River Walk is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the city, home to an eclectic blend of restaurants, bars, boutique establishments and much more. Take a stroll walking along the banks of the river, but for the ultimate experience you need to hop on one of the boats and experience the River Walk district on the water itself. Those opting to take a boat will will have the opportunity experience the Museum Reach, an additional 1.3 miles, with a boat landing at the San Antonio Museum of Art.

san antonio river walk

With over 100 stores to satisfy your retail therapy needs, the Rivercenter Mall is a four-level shopping complex that is also home to a variety of restaurants and other attractions. For those looking to celebrate more San Antonio history, head to the Esquire Tavern which is the oldest bar in the River Walk district. Opening its doors in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition, today this bar is the perfect spot to enjoy an aperitif or two before heading out to explore further.

San Fernando Cathedral

One of the most historic buildings in the downtown area of San Antonio is San Fernando Cathedral which dates back to its original construction in 1731. It was founded by a group of fifteen families that arrived in Texas from the Canary Islands and to this day, it continues to serve local communities and is the longest standing religious community throughout the state and plays an integral role in the local Catholic community.

san fernando cathedral san antonio

Located less than half a mile from the Alamo, this is definitely a structure that you won’t want to miss during your walking tour of the downtown area. With a combination of Colonial and Gothic Revival architectural styles, visitors can simply stand and admire the inherent beauty of this design from the outside before heading indoors to experience more architectural masterpieces throughout the interior.

Tower of the Americas

While the majority of this itinerary is focusing on architecture that dates back to before the 18th century, one of the more iconic modern structures is the towering 750-ft Tower of the Americas that provides breathtaking views across the city from the observation deck. If you are looking for the most spectacular views of the Alamo City from a bird’s eye perspective, head to the summit of this tower for panoramic scenes unlike anywhere else in the city.

tower of the americas san antonio

The Tower of the Americas may look like an ultra-modern design, but actually this structure is still over 50 years old and dates back to its grand opening in 1968. Between 1968 and 1996, it was the tallest observation tower in the United States before being surpassed by the Stratosphere in Las Vegas. Today, it still stands as the tallest building in San Antonio.

Summary

48 hours in any city is going to require visitors to organize their itinerary accordingly but if you are interested in exploring Spanish colonial history and heritage during your visit to San Antonio, this is definitely feasible during an action-packed weekend getaway. While history isn’t always associated with destinations across the United States, San Antonio is one of the few cities which can embrace the rich heritage associated with the colonial settlements that have created such an epic Mission trail.

5 Awesome Things to Do in the Grand Canyon South Rim

3

This post is in partnership with Hotels.com.

The US is blessed to have a plethora of breathtaking areas designated as national parks. Whether you are a fan of the Mighty 5 in Utah or perhaps the iconic Yellowstone or Yosemite National Park’s further north, these areas offer some of the most spectacular natural landscapes not only in the United States but anywhere in the world. One national park that defies the laws of nature is Grand Canyon National Park, located in Northern Arizona. Encompassing 277 miles of the Colorado River and comprising of layered bands of red rock, this epic natural landscape is unlike anywhere else in the world.

For those that have never visited the Grand Canyon, it’s one of those iconic landscapes that you cannot afford to miss…a once in a lifetime experience that will likely make you want to return time and time again. It’s no surprise to hear that the Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world alongside other infamous natural phenomena such as Mount Everest, Victoria Falls, and the Great Barrier Reef. Visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time epitomizes everything you associate with an awe-inspiring experience, and regardless of how much time you have in this historic national park, you will certainly want to make the most of enjoying all of the iconic landmarks.

grand canyon arizona

The Grand Canyon is frequently recognized with a divide between the North and South Rim of the canyon itself. Of course, visitors to either “rim” may be persuaded to head into the inner depths of the canyon itself, and the really adventurous folks will try to make their way between the two rims for the ultimate experience. While the North Rim is equally breathtaking, we want to focus our attention on the South Rim and why this is generally recognized as the more popular of the two.

Find the Perfect Place to Stay

It may seem obvious but finding the perfect place to stay while exploring the Grand Canyon is critical to ensuring your experience is the best possible, regardless of how long you are staying in the area. Do you want to stay inside the park? Do you want to stay outside so you can enjoy other nearby experiences?

You may be surprised to hear that there are actually several options available, which is rather unusual for a national park as these are frequently in remote locations with little to no choices available. If you are really ambitious and want the most flexibility, Flagstaff is less than 90 minutes from the South Rim entrance.

Less than 60 minutes away is the town of Williams which has an abundance of accommodation options including the trendy Luxury Sky Domes by Clear Sky Resorts. These “one-of-a-kind experiences” offer guests a unique adventure to ensure their stay matches the experience of actually exploring Grand Canyon National Park. Of course, the best options for convenience are in the nearby town of Grand Canyon Village.

Whether you choose to stay at the Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel or perhaps opt for a self-catered Canyon Plaza Premier Studios and Apartments, there are various accommodation options in the Grand Canyon area available.

Ok, so you have found the perfect place to stay…now it’s time to explore! Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in the Grand Canyon South Rim.

Visit the South Rim Viewpoints

When it comes to panoramic vistas overlooking the Grand Canyon, the South Rim has a myriad of epic spots that you cannot afford to miss during your visit. Visitors to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon have the opportunity to explore three different sections, each of which is incredible and we 100% recommend that you try to experience all of the following if your time in the park allows it.

Desert View Drive is 25 miles, but you will likely need several hours to experience this because there are so many spots you will not want to miss…and the hardest part will actually be leaving each of the viewpoints as the panoramic views are breathtaking. Shoshone Point, Grand View Point, Moran Point and Desert View Point are just some of the most iconic overlooks along this stretch of road but you may also stumble across other spots that are not as clearly identified but offer unique angles overlooking the canyon that you won’t want to miss.

hermit road grand canyon

Hermit Road is 7 miles long and while it offers less viewpoints, this should take nothing away from the inherent beauty of overlooks such as Powell Point, Mohave Point and Maricopa Point.

grand canyon overlooks

Grand Canyon Village is undoubtedly the most popular because of its proximity to everything – Mather Point is the most frequently visited overlook throughout the national park and certainly for good reason. If you can get here for sunrise or sunset and avoid some of the larger crowds, the views are magical. Yavapai Point is equally spectacular and generally less busy than Mather Point, while Yaki Point offers more epic scenery across the South Rim and beyond. Check out a full list of the best Grand Canyon lookout points for further inspiration.

Hike the South Rim Trail and Below the Rim

Visitors to Grand Canyon National Park simply will not experience the inherent beauty of this natural landscape if they don’t wear their favorite hiking shoes and hit the open trails either along the South Rim or below the rim. For those that are ready for a little more adventure, get ready for the ultimate thrill by hiking along one of the iconic trails deep into the canyon.

grand canyon south rim trail

Bright Angel Trail is a little under 10 miles and descends over 4300 feet into the canyon, offering a myriad of eye-catching spots where you can capture lifelong memories. It’s always recommended to proceed with caution before heading too deep into the canyon because the further you go down, the further you have to hike back. There are several “shorter” options available, each with unique experiences and a plethora of amazing views across the canyon.

The South Kaibab Trail is another of the South Rim’s iconic trails that attracts visitors from all across the globe. Ooh Aah Point is under 2 miles for the round trip and as the name suggests, it’s a pretty amazing view and well worth the effort to reach this. Throughout the full length of the South Kaibab Trail, it’s worth noting that this is a lot more exposed than other trails and while this offers more breathtaking scenery, it’s also not for the faint-hearted and visitors should proceed with caution.

grand canyon hiking trails

For those that are not too fond of the idea of heading into the canyon itself and prefer to stay on high ground, the South Rim Trail is the easiest but equally spectacular. The 13-mile trail offers a variety of smaller segments which all the family can enjoy and you can still say you have hiked the Grand Canyon! Hiking in the Grand Canyon is an amazing experience, but nothing is quite like the views that you will not want to stop admiring.

Experience the Grand Canyon Skywalk

Ready to experience the Grand Canyon from above? Do you have a fear of heights that you are ready to conquer? Head over to the spectacular Grand Canyon Skywalk that is actually located on the West Rim of the canyon for an amazing experience unlike anywhere else in the region. Take a stroll out on to the horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge that has a glass bottomed floor to enjoy epic panoramic views across the Grand Canyon. As you venture out 70 feet over the canyon, this experience offers views 4,000 feet down into the canyon!

Recognized by many major media outlets as offering “unparalleled views of one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders”, the Skywalk is an eye-catching and awe-inspiring experience that is the perfect adventure for anyone suffering from acrophobia. Located at Grand Canyon West, this is an independently owned landmark operated by the Hualapai Tribe on the reservation, rather than inside the nation park itself.

For those that want a little more adventure, why not hop on one of the various helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon which is another great way to experience a “birds-eye” perspective of this natural phenomenon.

Day Trip to Horseshoe Bend

While you could be forgiven for wondering why anyone would want to leave the Grand Canyon, if you have time built into your schedule that allows for a nearby day trip, head north to Horseshoe Bend to experience yet another iconic natural landmark that offers equally breathtaking panoramic scenes. This horseshoe-shaped incised meander on the Colorado River is an incredible experience and definitely worth the short hike from the nearby parking lot.

horseshoe bend

As you approach the edge of the overlook, you cannot help but appreciate the beauty of nature as you peer over the 1,000ft drop-off. Be cautious of your surroundings and don’t try to get too close to the edge to take that epic selfie because it’s simply not worth the risk, especially if there has been any rain in days leading up to your visit. The variety of viewpoints offer unique perspectives of Horseshoe Bend, and you may be fortunate to see kayakers meandering their way along the Colorado River as you appreciate nature at its finest.

day trip to horseshoe bend from grand canyon

For those of you looking to experience as much as possible in the immediate vicinity to Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon is yet another incredibly popular tourist attraction and certainly for good reason. Try to plan your visit at the right time of the day so you can capture those epic memories on your camera.

Enjoy an Epic Sunrise or Sunset

There are not many places across the globe that offer a more spectacular sunrise or sunset experience than the Grand Canyon. Be prepared to wake up early to find the perfect vantage point and enjoy a breathtaking sight of the sun lighting up the canyon in a maelstrom of bright colors. Take a moment to admire how the canyon rock changes color as the sun rises into the morning sky, while appreciate the fact that this is likely the best time to visit the Grand Canyon for awe-inspiring views with the fewest amount of people.

grand canyon sunset

Alternatively, head to one of the iconic overlooks to enjoy an epic sunset but be prepared to fight larger crowds who will want to gain the perfect spot to capture that once in a lifetime picture. Any of the aforementioned overlooks are breathtaking at both sunrise and sunset but perhaps our favorite is Yavapai Point, though I would argue any of these are equally worth visiting.

Summary

When it comes to national parks, Grand Canyon National Park is definitely one of the most spectacular in terms of natural beauty. The landscape across the canyon from any of the viewpoints along the South Rim are beyond breathtaking and it’s incredibly difficult to pinpoint just a few spots worth visiting. You will likely need much more time to explore everything you want to see at the Grand Canyon South Rim, but regardless of how much time you have, this is a national park you simply cannot afford to miss.

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of things to do in the area, it will give visitors the opportunity to sample some of the finest restaurants, attractions and other reasons to justify adding Fayetteville to your future travel plans.

  • U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum
  • Cape Fear Botanical Garden

  • Experience Local Coffee Shops

U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum

Aside from being home to the infamous Fort Bragg military installation, perhaps the most iconic attraction in Fayetteville is the fitting tribute to the Airborne and Special Operations soldiers located in the historic downtown area of the city. The U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum offers both outdoor and indoor exhibits that are worth visiting and learning more about the iconic role these individuals played in wars across the globe.

Before venturing inside, take some time to experience the iconic monuments on display in front of the museum. Constant Vigilance was created to memorialize all of the K9 units that have been lost in battle around the world. The strategic position of this memorial in close proximity to “Iron Mike” reflecting the loyalty that they have for their special operations comrades. At the base of the memorial are individual stones reflecting the names of all the K9 units that lost their lives in battle.

Self-guided tours inside the museum are free and lead visitors through a series of realistic exhibits, starting in 1940 with the creation of the U.S. Army Parachute Test Platoon and culminating with today’s Airborne and Special Operations units that have battled most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq. As you pass through each of the eras, you learn how these units have evolved utilizing knowledge and technology to better support other armed forces across the globe.

U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum

While tragedy is always going to be associated with museums like this, it is certainly a fitting tribute to memorialize and remember all of those that have fought in battles and this truly does represent units that frequently fly under the radar given their specialized roles in the military.

Cape Fear Botanical Garden

“Nature is the poetry of earth”…when John Keats alluded to this in his works, I think it’s fair to say he was looking at a breathtaking natural landscape that spoke to the inherent beauty that surrounds us. Visitors to Cape Fear Botanical Garden may well feel something very similar as they are transported into a natural abyss of beauty. During our visit, we were led on a guided tour of this botanical garden, exploring all of the iconic areas that were either in full bloom or in the process of showing their full colors.

cape fear botanical garden

We have been fortunate to visit a variety of botanical gardens across the globe but we would argue that Fayetteville’s version was up there with the very best, simply because of the natural feeling you get as you meander around the gardens. Many botanical gardens have that “man-made” association but this is certainly not the case at Cape Fear. Located on 80 acres nestled between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek, these gardens offer visitors of all ages a learning experience of botany like no other in the area.

1897 Poe House

Did you know that the E.A. Poe House was located in Fayetteville, NC? Ok, you can be forgiven for thinking that this is the former residence of the infamous writer because instead, Poe was a local businessman and owner of the Poe Brick Company. Dating back to the late 19th century when the house was constructed in 1897, visitors to Fayetteville can take a guided tour of the property before visiting the museum and learning about African American history, social change in North Carolina, the role of women and much more.

The Museum of Cape Fear offers more than 400 years of history across two floors of exhibits and after exploring this rich local history, visitors will want to head outside to Arsenal Park which has the remains of an ordnance factory that served both the Federal and Confederate governments during the 19th century.

Veterans Park and Freedom Memorial Park

North Carolina Veteran’s Park is the first park in the state dedicated to veterans from all branches of the military. This poignant area has memorials for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard and well worth taking some time to explore after experiencing the nearby Airborne and Special Operations Museum. The Oath of Service wall is perhaps the most iconic of all the memorials here, displaying bronze castings of North Carolina veterans’ hands strategically placed at shoulder height depicting them taking the oath of service before fighting for their country.

The nearby visitor center is worth exploring to learn more about the various military branches, while this is also home to a chandelier constructed from 33,500 military dog tags and also a Service Ribbon Wall made of fused glass that displays every service medal awarded since the Civil War.

freedom memorial park fayetteville nc

Just a short walk from Veterans Park is Freedom Memorial Park and is also worth experiencing. Dating back to its construction in 1992, this memorializes those who have lost their lives in battle and offers a location of solitude in the downtown area of Fayetteville for family members to reflect on those that were tragically lost.

Carvers Creek State Park

With over 4,530 acres across the Sandhills region of North Carolina, Carvers Creek State Park is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life to relax among natural surroundings and enjoy a myriad of multi-use trails. At the heart of Carvers Creek State Park is Long Valley Farm, a historic retreat of a Rockefeller family member, but regardless of your desire to learn more about the Rockefeller legacy, this park is one where you can enjoy miles of gorgeous trails.

There are two convenient access points to the state park, either via the Sandhills entrance or via the Long Valley Farm entrance. Either option offers a starting point for a variety of trails through longleaf pine forest, whether you are wearing your favorite hiking boots or hopping on a bike to explore more of the state park, you can be sure there is something for every visitor.

One of the most unique experiences in Fayetteville is the family friendly farmers market at Dirtbag Ales, just a few miles outside of the downtown area of the city. For the non-coffee drinkers out there, head to Winterbloom Tea to sample a handcrafted tea inside one of the most vibrant, urban locations in the city. You can even add a little extra kick with a cocktail style drink, but regardless of your preference, this is definitely worth visiting if you are looking for something a little different. The historic downtown neighborhood of Fayetteville is home to three coffee/tea shops on the main street, so you cannot avoid seeing all of these as you explore some of the city’s most iconic attractions.

That’s right, located in Cumberland County, craft beer connoisseurs can visit one of the various breweries to sample not only delicious locally crafted brews, but also a selection of local cuisine offerings that create the perfect accompaniment to these beers.

We already mentioned Dirtbag Ales as the perfect spot to visit on the weekend for the iconic farmers market, but for those that prefer to stay in the downtown vicinity of Fayetteville, you can visit one of the following breweries to sample their showcase of brews. Both Huske Hardware and Gaston Brewing Company are located in the historic downtown neighborhood and with only a short walk between the two of them, you could certainly sample the brews at both breweries during the same trip.

Best Things to Do in Orlando for Adults in a Weekend Getaway

1

This post is in partnership with Hotels.com.

When you think about the best destinations for a fun-filled family adventure, Orlando is probably one of the first places you would consider visiting. However, did you know that Orlando is not just the perfect destination to take the kids and enjoy a plethora of fun activities in those iconic theme parks? That’s right, Orlando is also one of the best places to visit for a romantic weekend retreat, a relaxing break for couples or perhaps even a guys/girl’s getaway! Thinking about the best things to do in Orlando for adults during a 48 or 72-hour getaway…well, the list is endless!

Let’s start by thinking about Orlando in a slightly different context to the norm and focus on how “adults” should perceive this city. Yes, while much of the talk will certainly surround Disney World and Universal Studios, there are so many other things that Orlando is famous for but unfortunately it frequently gets left in the shadow of these conglomerate theme parks. We are going to focus on everything and anything that an adult will love about Orlando…from the best places to stay, where to eat and what to do!

Where to Stay in Orlando

Whether you are looking to stay on property at one of the iconic theme parks or perhaps stay closer to downtown Orlando, you can be sure that this city has a vast collection of accommodation options available to suit your preference and budgetary needs. Affordable luxury is definitely an option when considering the variety of chain and boutique style hotels that are available throughout the city, and ultimately it will come down to location, budget and personal preference.

where to stay in orlando

When we visit Orlando for a short weekend getaway and are focused on exploring the “other” side of Orlando (everything minus the theme parks), we generally prefer to find something closer to downtown or International Drive which is frequently considered the heartbeat of the city away from the parks. I-Drive is the ultimate “entertainment corridor” (more on that later) but it’s also home to a plethora of hotel options, ranging from the low-end budget options to the higher-end luxury establishments.

where to stay in orlando

If you are flying into Orlando, you can easily commute around the city using Uber/Lyft (and even public transportation thanks to the awesome trolley service) but if you want that little extra flexibility, renting a car will extend the accommodation options available to you.

Things to Do in Orlando for Adults

Foodie fanatics? Aspiring art critics? Coffee drinkers? Nature nerds? Regardless of whether you are any of these or perhaps just a someone that loves to explore a new city and have a good time, Orlando has everything you need to experience all of the above plus much more!

things to do in orlando for adults

Given that we highlighted a few different types of travelers that we perhaps closely relate to, we are going to focus on some of these because Orlando is home to a variety of local spots that will offer plenty of intrigue and inspire you to want to return in the future to explore further. But while we are focused on exploring the other side of Orlando, I think it’s important to remember that Orlando’s theme parks are just as much for adults as they are for kids.

In fact, we have thoroughly enjoyed our visits to Orlando while we were annual pass holders at Disney World and can 100% attest this is the “happiest place on earth” even for adults! If you need a little respite from work or simply need to bring back some childhood memories, this is the place to go.

However, it’s some of the lesser known things to do in Orlando that we want to focus our attention on and highlight a few experiences that all adults can enjoy while also seeing a very different side to the city.

Eclectic Food Scene

Orlando’s restaurant scene is one that can certainly compete with some of the leading cities across the world. While it frequently goes unnoticed, Orlando is home to an eclectic collection of global cuisine options and with something for everyone’s taste palate and budget.

After sampling a selection of delicious dishes, don’t forget to check out the best things to do at Disney Springs!

Orlando’s Street Art Scene

What better way to explore a combination of historic art with modern day artistic creativity than experiencing the awesome Orlando street art scene. Art is frequently associated with visiting art galleries to experience historic artistic works from across the globe. However, we are seeing more and more cities trend towards the ever-changing landscape of street art and what better way to promote local artistic talent than by showcasing amazing murals scattered around the city.

Grab your favorite coffee (check out our recommendations on Orlando’s best coffee shops later) and simply get out and explore the creative side of Orlando. This is a great way to get exercise, learn about some of the lesser-known neighborhoods around Orlando and simply appreciate a different, modern side of art.

From the Mills 50 District to the WestArt/Parramore District, Orlando has an abundance of areas with a plethora of murals on display. Downtown Orlando is equally impressive and exploring this side of the city offers a unique look at how locals showcase unique cultural differences.

Visiting local coffee shops is not only a great way to sample some of the best local roasts in town, but also to interact with locals and perhaps pick up some useful hints and tips of “insider knowledge”. Enjoying your favorite espresso at one of the local coffee shops is a great way to spend the morning while catching up with friends and family.

This botanical oasis is just minutes from downtown Orlando and the moment you walk through the gates, you are immediately transformed into an area of natural beauty.

Best Coffee Shops in Fayetteville, NC – Local Spots Not to Miss

“Coffee is always a good idea”…it’s a quote we frequently see and one that we 100% attest to whether we are at home or on the road. One of the great things about traveling across the globe is that while there are many unique differences from one country to the next, coffee seems to be pretty constant wherever you go. Yes, it varies from one place to the next but just like experiencing a myriad of cultures, enjoying the variety of local coffee shops is an experience in itself.

When we travel domestically around the US, our philosophy remains the same…we simply have to try local coffee establishments! Our recent trip to North Carolina was no different and we made it one of our goals to find the best coffee shops in Fayetteville, NC.

Before we delve into the world of coffee shops and Fayetteville, it’s fair to say that we are constantly asked why we prefer local coffee shops over chain brands such as Starbucks? The reality is, Starbucks is everywhere!

While I don’t have any issue with visiting Starbucks (and actually I do enjoy the environment of hanging out in a Starbucks coffee shop!), whenever you visit a new destination, popping in to a local coffee shop is a must because you simply cannot experience that anywhere else and well, you never know if you will have the opportunity to return in the future.

the coffee scene fayetteville north carolina

Another reason is of course, supporting local communities and businesses! It’s a pretty fair statement to make that Starbucks isn’t going to hurt if they lose one single customer but to a local coffee roaster, that could be a make or break between them surviving or having to look at alternative income streams.

Anyway…enough of the local coffee shop vs chain store argument and let’s focus our attention on finding those epic local coffee spots in Fayetteville, NC that you simply cannot afford to miss when you are next in the Tar Heel State.

best local coffee shops in fayetteville

Best Local Coffee Shops in Fayetteville, NC

Let’s start by diving into the demographics of the city of Fayetteville, NC. For those of you that have never visited this part of North Carolina, it’s home to Fort Bragg, an active military installation, and therefore has a huge military population. With a population of over 200,000, it’s no surprise that Fayetteville has a plethora of coffee shops to support both locals and visitors alike.

While Fayetteville’s strong military presence helps bring folks from all corners of the US, it does tend to create a constantly changing population with folks heading back home and only a small percentage staying in the area and calling Fayetteville their home. However, for the locals who were born and raised in Fayetteville and for those visitors like ourselves that simply want to entertain the best local roasters in town, there are a variety of local spots worth experiencing including (but not limited to) the following:

  • The Coffee Scene
  • The Coffee Cup
  • Rude Awakening Coffee House
  • Jumpin’ Java Coffee Shop
  • Dolce Aroma Coffee Bar
  • Winterbloom Tea

The above list are six spots that we visited during our trip to Fayetteville and what we will cover in more detail, but there are other local spots including Beans and Things, Cumberland Coffee Roasters among others that we encourage you all to check out when visiting the area.

The Coffee Scene

The Coffee Scene is perhaps the most intriguing of all the coffee shops, not only because of the unique history associated with this location but also because the interior design is so cool and different to anything we have experienced before. What was once located inside the heart of a shopping center has now transformed into a standalone building off Morganton Road and McPherson Church Road.

the coffee scene fayetteville nc

The ambiance throughout The Coffee Scene immediately resonates as you walk through the door. The winding staircase is a focal point in the downstairs area and the open concept layout allows guests the opportunity to order their drink before deciding whether to head upstairs or remain on the ground floor, with ample seating available in both areas.

the coffee scene fayetteville

The Coffee Scene is perhaps the best coffee shop in Fayetteville in terms of ample space for you to relax and catch up on some work (or simply enjoy a favorite book or hang out with friends).

With a variety of hot and cold beverages to choose from, and a selection of breakfast pastries and other options available, visitors to The Coffee Scene will be spoiled for choice. The Coffee Cup

Ready to head to the historic downtown area of Fayetteville? While wandering around and exploring the historic museums, you will likely want to grab a cup of Joe to keep your energy levels high to enjoy your visit downtown. Hay Street is home to various coffee shops but if you are looking for the most creative selection of handcrafted coffee options, The Coffee Cup is perhaps the most unique.

While the interior of The Coffee Cup is relatively small, rather stereotypical of any coffee shop that is located in a historic downtown area, there is a really friendly vibe and perhaps that is associated with the welcome you receive from the barista. Take some time to peruse the menu because there are A LOT of options, all of which will likely spark your interest and it may take a while to figure out which route you want to go.

How does an iced Banana Creme Pie (creme de banana, white chocolate, espresso and milk) sound? Or perhaps the Fluffy Bunny (red velvet, raspberry, white chocolate and milk) sounds more appealing? These wonderfully crafted names are matched only by the carefully concocted drinks that will entice you to return…that is when you know you have found a local coffee shop that perfectly hits the spot!

Rude Awakening Coffee House

If you love quirky downtown coffee shops, the best example in Fayetteville is Rude Awakening which is another great option to sample a fine collection of coffee, pastries, sandwiches, chocolates, smoothies and coffee freezes. Located just a short walk from The Coffee Cup, Rude Awakening Coffee House has been serving locals and visitors alike since it open its doors in 1999.

Focused on serving organic, fair-trade and “green” inspired coffee, Rude Awakening is all about community and ensuring their baristas provide the best customer service to every visitor that walks through their doors.

While the interior is hardly conducive to sitting down and enjoying your coffee, after purchasing your chosen drink, head to the back of the coffee shop and experience the awesome courtyard which is the perfect place to relax and indulge in your favorite espresso. With seating available outside in front of Rude Awakening, there are ample opportunities to enjoy your drink while interacting with fellow coffee aficionados.

Along with the various menu items that will surely spark your interest, the iconic courtyard is perhaps the best reason for visiting Rude Awakening. The high brick walls, plethora of plant life scattered around, and strategically placed artwork creates the perfect urban setting to enjoy coffee either with friends or in relaxing solitude.

Jumpin’ Java Coffee Shop

Downtown Fayetteville is home to various coffee shops but for those willing to experience other locations around Fayetteville, there are many other options to choose from. One of our favorites that we stumbled across during our final day in Fayetteville was Jumpin’ Java Coffee Shop.

With a widespread collection of handcrafted espresso beverages to choose from, along with breakfast items (scones, cookies, breakfast sandwiches etc) and other drinks, Jumpin’ Java offers a myriad of options to enjoy while relaxing in a friendly atmosphere.

Heather ordered the wonderfully named “Royale with Cheese” which was Cherry, White Chocolate and Cheesecake blended together with milk and ice, creating a magical concoction which was almost like a milkshake! I opted for the “Sticky Maple Toffee” which was a combination of Caramel, Maple and English Toffee and accompanied by milk and espresso, this was the perfect “pick me up” to start the day with a little sweet twist to it.

Unlike the downtown coffee shops that face difficulties in terms of interior space, Jumpin’ Java offers plenty of comfortable seating options throughout the coffee shop and whether you are looking at catching up on some work or read your morning newspaper, you can be sure that there is ample seating to satisfy everyone’s needs.

Dolce Aroma Coffee Bar

One of Fayetteville’s newest coffee shops is the Italian inspired Dolce Aroma Coffee Bar. Connected to Elizabeth’s Pizza, this coffee bar is the perfect place to enjoy lunch or dinner before indulging in either your favorite espresso or perhaps indulge in a decadent slice of freshly prepared cake. With a variety of cake and pastry selections to choose from, anyone with a sweet tooth will find it difficult to resist one or more of these options.

The Double Decker Blackberry Cheesecake comprises of New York style cheesecake topped with blackberry jam, yellow cake and blackberry mousse and mixed with whole blackberries before being topped with a blackberry infused glaze. We couldn’t resist sampling this and while the picture doesn’t do this enough justice, it’s fair to say it was the perfect afternoon treat.

The drink menu is equally enticing, with a variety of hot and cold options to choose from. Heather opted for a seasonal apple cider and I chose the white chocolate frappe. With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, the relaxing vibe and ambiance throughout Dolce Aroma makes this a perfect fit for anyone wanting to enjoy a late afternoon sweet treat.

Winterbloom Tea

For the non-coffee drinkers out there…yes, I know that may sound like a strange concept for folks like me but Heather does fall into this category so it’s only fair to look for the best options out there for this population, one of the best options in Fayetteville is the wonderfully named Winterbloom Tea located directly across from Rude Awakening Coffee House in the historic downtown area.

winterbloom tea fayetteville nc

Passion for tea is something we wanted to share with everyone. We felt our city should not have to compromise to buy premium loose leaf tea.

Winterbloom Tea

While I am fond of a stereotypical English breakfast tea, I have to admit that the plethora of options available at Winterbloom Tea was rather impressive. But the real highlight of this was the creative alcoholic concoctions that you can order at the bar.

Whether you are wandering around downtown Fayetteville and want a refreshing Forest Berries tea as Heather opted for, or perhaps you need a concocted cocktail with something a little stronger in there, the menu options at Winterbloom Tea are endless.

I immediately fell in love with the decor throughout this “tea shop” – with a variety of seating options available and a real urban feel to the design features throughout the shop, this is definitely a place you could enjoy your favorite tea while checking e-mails or reading your favorite book.

Summary

Fayetteville may be recognized as being home to the infamous Fort Bragg military base but after spending a few days exploring this area, we can well and truly attest that it should also be renowned as being home to a plethora of awesome local coffee shops. We hope you have the opportunity to visit Fayetteville and experience some (or all) of the above coffee shops and we would love to hear your feedback on which you think is the best.

best local coffee shops in fayetteville nc

As you have probably established by now, we LOVE visiting coffee shops and we always want to share our experiences with you. Do you have any lesser known towns that are home to a collection of local coffee shops that we should be inspired to visit?

Here are a couple of other locations around the world with great, local coffee scenes:

Village Creek State Park, Arkansas – Enjoy an Amazing Day Trip

At almost 7000 acres of breathtaking landscape along Crowley’s Ridge in the heart of Northeast Arkansas, Village Creek State Park is a rural hidden gem that should be on everyone’s radar while planning a trip to the Natural State. While Arkansas may not be the first state you think about exploring, some of the lesser known gems are what makes this state such a worthwhile area to experience.

village creek state park entrance

Located only six miles south of Wynne, Village Creek State Park is located along one of Arkansas’ infamous ridges. For those visiting from out of state, it is approximately 100 miles north of Little Rock and less than one hour from our home town of Jonesboro. To reach the park, take Exit 242 off I-40 just east of Forrest City and travel 12 miles north on Highway 284; or travel six miles south on Highway 284 from the nearby town of Wynne.

wynne arkansas sign

Let’s start by adding a disclaimer. I have lived in Arkansas since 2008 and Heather has lived here all her life and neither of us previously visited Village Creek State Park until our recent day trip to this hidden gem. Whether this is because of location or simply a lack of knowledge that this state park exists, we are certainly glad we finally made the effort to head south and experience this gorgeous park.

Why Visit Village Creek State Park?

So, what makes Village Creek State Park so unique and worth heading to such a rural part of Arkansas? Given its location on Crowley’s Ridge, the moment you drive into the area you quickly realize that this park epitomizes all of the natural features of the “ridge” and it’s an awesome experience to see how these have been preserved and enhanced into a state park.

wynne arkansas railway line

Village Creek State Park is actually named for a stream that flows through the area, and while it is frequently recognized as a “natural” state park, it also preserves much of the rich history in this region.

village creek state park hiking trails

Dating back to the early 19th century when the Military Road linked Memphis, Tennessee with Little Rock, Arkansas, there is still a part of this road visible today in the heart of Village Creek State Park. More on this later, but this history alone creates a rather unique environment and certainly a lot of memories to be made as you learn all about the historical background of this area.

lake austell village creek state park

But perhaps the real reason that visitors are so intrigued by the beauty of Village Creek State Park is the myriad of hiking trails that can be experienced throughout the park, primarily around the perimeters of the two iconic lakes – Lake Dunn and Lake Austell. In conjunction with a 27-hole public golf course that meanders through the rolling hills of the ridge, along with horse stables, picnic tables, gift shop and more, Village Creek State Park has a plethora of attractions to keep all the family occupied on an epic day trip.

The History of Military Road

Let’s start at Lake Austell and perhaps the most intriguing hiking trail here which is the historic Military Road that connected Little Rock to Memphis. Upon completion in 1829, this road became a major route of Indian Choctaw, Chickasaw and Muscogee folks, but today it is one of the iconic hiking trails at Village Creek State Park. At just over 2 miles, this trail meanders through forestry with a myriad of wooden/metal bridges and is part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

military road trail village creek state park

Dependent on the time of year that you visit, be sure to be on the lookout for snakes (cottonmouth snakes are frequently seen throughout the wooded area) but aside from that, you can thoroughly enjoy a relaxing, quiet stroll along such a historic trail. There are several placards depicting the history of Military Road and these are well worth reading to learn more about your upcoming adventure.

trail of tears village creek state park

As you take the initial stroll along the banks of Lake Austell, you cannot help but admire the panoramic vistas across Crowley’s Ridge on one side and the picturesque lake on the other. If you visit later in the day, this is an epic spot to capture breathtaking sunset pictures that truly epitomize the natural beauty in this part of Arkansas.

military road trail

The trail comprises of two loops – Upper and Lower Loop. Regardless of which route you choose to take, you will end up in the same spot, it’s simply a matter of whether you prefer to learn about the history of the trail before or after the 2 mile trail.

Hiking Trails

While the Military Road Trail is perhaps the most popular, Village Creek State Park is home to 33 miles of distinctive trails, many of which are infrequently visited, so you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere without too many folks passing by. The Lake Dunn Trail, also measuring just under 3 miles in length, is equally spectacular and features a popular swinging bridge (although in 2021 this was temporarily inaccessible due to a tree falling and destroying it) along with connecting other multi-use trails that interconnect throughout this state park.

lake austell

For those looking to enjoy a slightly easier and shorter option, Austell Trail is a little over 1 mile in length and starts at the Visitor Center, ending at Lake Austell picnic area. This particular landscape offers unique hogback ridges and stream valleys, and while there are some moderately steep climbs, this relatively short trail is another great option for those that love the great outdoors. You can also access the Old Military Road Trail from this if you are looking to experience a variety of trails on the same visit.

village creek state park hiking trails

The shortest and easiest of all the trails at Village Creek State Park is Arboretum Trail. Measuring only a quarter of a mile, this is the perfect spot for all the family to enjoy a true nature walk while also experiencing many of the local area’s common trees and shrubs. It’s definitely a great trail to educate kids while also enjoying some exercise.

Lake Dunn and Lake Austell

The beauty throughout Village Creek State Park is apparent when you stand and admire the panoramic scenes across both Lake Dunn and Lake Austell.

lake dunn village creek arkansas

Regardless of whether you choose to explore both and enjoy hiking trails in and around these two bodies of water, a trip to this Arkansas State Park would not be the same without a visit to both lakes. If you have any interest in kayaking or fishing, both lakes are the perfect spot to get out on the water and enjoy the scenery and plethora of fish (you can find crappie, bass, bream among others in both lakes) that can be found here.

lake dunn

Lake Dunn is home to a bait shop and dock where fishing boat, kayaks, and pedal boats can be rented for a small fee. Visitors can head out and enjoy the scenery from on the water but for those that prefer to stay on dry land, the view from the boat dock at Lake Dunn is pretty incredible. We spent some time just peering out across the lake and listening to nothing but wildlife and the sound of water gently running on the nearby rocks.

lake dunn village creek state park

Lake Austell is equally beautiful, albeit slightly larger at 85 acres than its small counterpart that is only 65 acres in size. The old saying that “good things often come in small packages” is certainly true here and both lakes are frequently renowned as some of the best in the area for bass fishing.

Golf the Ridges at Village Creek

While most visitors to Village Creek will likely want to explore the park itself, for the avid golfers out there, this park is home to one of the finest courses in the Natural State. The Ridges at Village Creek is an Andy Dye-designed 27-hole championship golf course that offer three distinctive nine hole courses that meander through the rolling hills of Crowley’s Ridge.

ridges at village creek golf course

With water hazards coming into play on twelve holes, accuracy is paramount but you could easily be forgiven for being distracted with the panoramic views that you can enjoy throughout the course. This is definitely not a course for the faint hearted and it is certainly a true workout with the steep terrain a frequent challenge and a flat lie being a rarity. A gorgeous backdrop of hardwood forests is the perfect atmosphere for a true golfing experience that will challenge golfers of all standards.

Summary

Arkansas frequently falls under the radar of travelers but after visiting locations such as Mammoth Spring State Park and now Village Creek State Park, it’s fair to say that the Natural State is one that deserves to get more recognition. If you love being outdoors and experiencing easy to moderate hiking trails, Village Creek is a lightly trafficked state park that offers a plethora of awesome adventures and panoramic scenes.

Don’t forget to visit Lake Dunn or Lake Austell around sunset, and simply enjoy the relaxing solitude that is present throughout the near 7000 acres of Village Creek State Park.

However, if you want to truly appreciate the abundance of natural features and epic landscapes, you will likely want to spend a few days in and around the vicinity of the park.

Plenty of budget friendly and luxury accommodation options are available, ranging from local motel establishments to recognized hotel chains. After a long day hiking around the national park, you will be ready for a little relaxation and a bite to eat in the nearby town of Desert Hot Springs or even a little further afield in Indio.

Hiking Trails Around Joshua Tree

With 794,000 acres intersecting the Mojave and Colorado deserts, it’s likely no surprise that there is a lot of landscape to explore and what better way to do this than by wearing your favorite hiking shoes and experiencing the collection of awesome trails.

IMPORTANT - Before highlighting some of the iconic spots worth visiting, it's worth remembering that Joshua Tree is like many other national parks and has an abundance of isolated, remote spots, so always be prepared with plenty of food, water and let folks know if you are heading out on a longer hike.

While the list of hiking trails is far longer than we will cover, here are some of the best areas to experience the true beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.

  • Ryan Mountain Trail
  • Warren Peak Trail
  • Hidden Valley Trail
  • Cholla Cactus Garden Trail
  • Skull Rock Trail

One of the most popular hikes in Joshua Tree is Ryan Mountain Trail. At approximately 3 miles in distance, this moderately difficult trail will take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours dependent on fitness levels and desire to take pictures along the route. Hikers are given the opportunity to rise to the summit of Ryan Mountain, where breathtaking panoramas across San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, and Pleasant Valleys await.

joshua tree national park

The Cholla Cactus Garden Trail is perhaps the most unique of the aforementioned recommendations. While it is only short at just over a quarter of a mile, this weird yet wonderful trail leads visitors through some of the most lethal cacti in this national park. They may be small but they certainly pack a punch and we highly recommend refraining from touching these!

cholla cactus trail

Skull Rock is one of the most iconic landmarks throughout Joshua Tree, primarily because it’s such a unique geological feature that epitomizes the shape of a skull. It is also one of the easiest for all visitors to be able to experience with a short trail leading to this landmark.

Scenic National Park Drive

There are three park entrances to Joshua Tree at the North, South and West entrance. Regardless of where you start your adventure, the drives through this national park are incredible and it won’t be long before you are spotting those iconic “Joshua” trees.

If you are not feeling energetic enough to experience some of those lengthy hikes, the beauty of Joshua Tree is that you can enjoy an equally spectacular experience by simply following the drive through the park. There are numerous spots where you will likely want to pull over and capture some of those infamous Joshua tree pictures but like many other national parks, this is one you can appreciate from the comfort of your vehicle.
