Camping in Devon – Enjoy an Amazing Holiday in the UK

When it comes to popular English holiday destinations, the English Riviera is renowned as being one of the best areas to enjoy the gorgeous summer weather, breathtaking scenery and stereotypical experiences that you would generally associate with mainland Europe and the Meditteranean. However, for visitors to the UK, this part of the country may not be the first region to consider exploring, primarily because places such as London, the Cotswolds, and even the Lake District are likely going to be more popular. We would argue that camping in Devon is an experience that should be on everyone’s radar.

The English Riviera, comprising of South Devon’s iconic coastal towns of Torquay, Brixham, Paignton, among others, is the perfect base to explore idyllic landscapes throughout this part of the UK. From rolling hills to spectacular ocean landscapes, it’s no surprise that this area is a hot commodity, particularly for British tourists who prefer to argue that you don’t need to leave the UK to enjoy the perfect holiday during the summer.

Whether you choose to follow our recommendation of “roughing it” (by the end of this post, you will realize that the phrase “roughing it” is hardly applicable here given the nature of the Devon campsites!) or opt to stay in a luxury hotel overlooking the Torquay seafront, we hope that the English Riviera will be on your radar for a future visit to the UK! It’s certainly a place dear to our hearts and one that we always look forward to returning to.

Where to Stay in Devon?

Ok, so you have decided to follow our lead and start planning a trip to Devon. The English South Coast is home to a myriad of accommodation options, ranging from local bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels with breathtaking scenery. However, we would argue that you should ignore all of these options and instead, consider staying in one of the amazing caravan/campsites scattered across the county.

Just like the rest of England, Devon is home to various caravan parks, all perfectly manicured with a variety of amenities to meet all of your needs and certainly enticing you to book a long weekend getaway or extended vacation there. Although Devon is spoiled for choice when it comes to campsites, we have a real soft spot for one site in particular – Ross Park Caravan Park!

Throughout this post, we will be highlighting some of the best reasons why Ross Park Caravan Park is the ideal place to stay while exploring South Devon. We can 100% attest that in terms of comfort, location, affordability, aesthetic appearance and overall “luxury” camping experience, this campsite is a place you cannot go wrong.

How to Find the Perfect Tent?

Before you venture across the globe and arrive in the UK, you should consider what type of tent you will reside in for the duration of your visit. A number of questions should be asked prior to purchasing a tent:

How many people will be in the tent?
How much time do you plan on spending in the tent?
What are the likely weather conditions during your holiday?
How comfortable are you putting up a tent? Do you prefer the “quick pitch” style of a tent?

These are just some of the very basic questions you need to ask yourselves before heading into the market! Don’t worry, there are plenty of styles, brands and budget-friendly options to choose from. In fact, it’s fair to say there will be something for everyone.

Given that it’s just the two of us, we opted for a Coleman 4-person tent with “Fast-Pitch” functionality. This provided extra room inside the tent but at the same time meant that we were able to put this together in less than 15 minutes and that included at least 5 minutes of putting the pins around the bottom to keep everything in place.

With a plethora of leading adventure and tent brands out there, you won’t be short of options and ultimately it’s going to come down to personal preference and your budget. We strongly encourage you to check out websites such as Dick’s Sporting Goods if you are based in the States or Add Nature if you are in mainland Europe as both offer a diversified collection of tents to suit everyone’s needs.

Tent Life in Devon

Regardless of whether you are choosing to spend just a couple of nights or perhaps a week-long stay in Devon, you can be sure that your experience at Ross Park will be relaxing and comfortable (well, as comfortable as it can be when you sleep in a tent!). A large field is available for tents and there are several hook-up points for electricity if you choose to really enhance your experience. After pitching your tent in your chosen spot, why not head out and start exploring the rest of the caravan site?

Bathrooms

Let’s start with the bathrooms. Ok, so a bathroom experience may not seem like something worth promoting on a campsite but after you step inside the individual bathrooms at Ross Park, you will know why we are so excited about them.

They are unlike anywhere else we have visited and offer the perfect “home from home” experience to ensure you stay fresh and clean.

Caravans and Storage

As you walk around Ross Park, you cannot help but notice the number of touring caravans that are scattered around the campsite. Many of these (including my parents) will reside here for several weeks and utilize this as the perfect base to enjoy a summer holiday.

For those of you that live in the UK and choose to purchase a caravan, if you come to the decision that Ross Park is the ultimate getaway spot, you can even store your caravan on the property, making it even more convenient to enjoy multiple holidays there.

Amenities

Exploring the English Riviera is likely the main reason you head to South Devon but for those of you that prefer to enjoy a truly relaxing getaway and don’t want to venture away from the campsite all the time, you can enjoy a variety of amenities “on-site”.

Directly behind the bathroom complex is a games room, outdoor bowling alley, table tennis table and even an enlarged “Connect 4” board!

For those of you that prefer to dine with a little more luxury than just a camping stove, head over to the New Barn restaurant and fully serviced bar. A large tropical conservatory is attached to the restaurant and offers the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a relaxing meal from a diverse menu.

Summary

Camping in England is unlike anywhere else in the world. For anyone that has never experienced this, trying to tell them that camping around the UK can be a luxury experience is hardly believable. However, we hope that you agree with us that a campsite like Ross Park epitomizes this “luxury” environment and definitely is something worth considering when booking a trip to the UK.

For only £20 per night, you can enjoy a plethora of awesome amenities and Ross Park is perfectly located to explore the very best of the English Riviera. The concept of camping may not be for everyone but we would argue that South Devon is the perfect place to at least try it for the first time…you never know, you may be pleasantly surprised at just how much you enjoy the experience!

Enjoy the Best Things to Do at Disney Springs in Orlando

Heading to Orlando and excited about an amazing Disney World experience? But then you take a step back and realize that your budget just isn’t going to allow you to enjoy the very best of Disney World on this trip. However, it doesn’t have to be like this and for those of you that want to experience Disney World without actually visiting the main parks, you can still do this. Welcome to Disney Springs!! We are ready to share some of the best things to do at Disney Springs and hopefully inspire you to add this to your itinerary.

It’s true, Disney World is far from cheap and unless you are financially prepared and well organized for your upcoming trip to Orlando, it can quickly get out of hand. Even if you attempt to maximize your time as we did and experience Disney World in one day, as I am sure you are all aware, ticket prices to any of the parks (nevermind the Park Hopper passes!) are anything but affordable. Disney Springs is the exact opposite because admission into this area is FREE!

We have been fortunate to visit this awesome “downtown area” of Disney on a couple of occasions and each time we realize that this is the perfect place to encapsulate the “Disney experience” without having to venture inside the parks.

Let’s start with some basic information that will help you during your visit to Disney Springs. Whether you are planning a visit to Disney World or simply enjoying the best of Orlando, Disney Springs is a place that should be on your radar at any time of the day.

Complimentary self-parking is available throughout Disney Springs. Two parking garages offer ample spaces and easy access while outdoor parking is also available for those that prefer that option. Best Things to Do at Disney Springs

Disney Springs is an outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment complex with a plethora of amazing things to do. It’s feasible that you could spend all day (or even multiple days) exploring the very best of Disney Springs and just to reiterate what I mentioned previously, the amount you choose to spend here is entirely personal preference.

An eclectic blend of restaurants highlighting some of the best cuisine options from around the world can be found at Disney Springs while all your favorite designer brands have a storefront waiting to entice you through their doors.

We will take a look at each of the different components separately but ultimately a visit to Disney Springs is all about a relaxing atmosphere and a myriad of options to ensure your Disney experience continues!

To put Disney Springs into perspective, it’s essentially a “sprawling promenade” similar to an outdoor mall with distinctive neighborhoods, each of which features unique experiences for all the family to enjoy. Disney Springs surrounds a number of water features, all of which combine to create the perfect environment for a relaxing visit.

Disney Springs features The Landing, Marketplace, West Side and Town Center but collectively are in an area that you can easily explore in a few hours. Of course, you will likely want to spend more time here, as you won’t be able to resist visiting one of the many attractions.

Dining at Disney Springs

With over 50 dining options scattered throughout the promenade, it’s no surprise to hear that Disney Springs is a popular spot to visit if you are looking to enjoy a bite to eat. Whether you are looking to just grab something quick or possibly enjoy a romantic sit-down meal, Disney Springs will surely have something to satisfy your appetite.

Let’s take a look at a couple of our favorite spots that we recommend.

Raglan Road Irish Pub

Are you ready for a truly authentic Irish experience at Disney Springs? Head over to Raglan Road Irish Pub to sample some of the finest Irish cuisines throughout Orlando while enjoying a fresh pint of Guinness and being serenaded by stereotypical Irish folk music.

If you are fortunate enough to visit Raglan Road during “The Rhythms of Raglan”, you will be rewarded with a 90-minute show featuring traditional Irish dancers.

While enjoying this traditional music, be sure to take your time perusing the delicious array of menu options because the tough part will be figuring out exactly what to order. Fish and Chips is always a ‘grand’ choice in an Irish pub but perhaps you will be inspired to try the Shepherd’s Pie with a twist!

Maria and Enzo’s Ristorante

If you are looking to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine while visiting Disney Springs, take a stroll through the promenade and visit Maria and Enzo’s Ristorante located inside the Landing Dock neighborhood.

Traditional Spaghetti and Meatballs is always a great choice or perhaps you want a lighter salad option but regardless of your preference, enjoying a late-evening meal inside this ‘trattoria’ is definitely one of the best dining experiences at Disney Springs.

Disney Springs is also a great place to visit after you have already experienced lunch or dinner. Why not head here to sample a “sweet treat” and enjoy dessert while admiring the gorgeous surroundings? That’s right, Disney Springs is home to a diverse collection of cafes and restaurants that focus their attention on delivering the best desserts in Orlando.

From decadent ice cream sundaes to delicious pastries from a French-inspired patisserie, Disney Springs is the place to go if you have a sweet tooth!

Amorette’s Patisserie

For those of you that prefer to do a little window shopping while exploring Disney Springs, there is one place that you cannot afford to miss – Amorette’s Patisserie. The moment you start peering through the front window, I am 100% convinced that you will be intrigued enough to step inside and indulge yourselves in the exquisite cakes, eclairs, and other sweet treats!

A traditional ‘Mickey Mousse’ featuring a combination of Chocolate Chiffon Cake, Dark Chocolate Mousse, and White Chocolate Mousse is always an appealing choice, not only because of the aesthetic appearance but also the delicious taste.

A variety of eclair flavors including Sea Salt Caramel and Raspberry are popular but it’s fair to say everything inside Amorette’s Patisserie is an appetizing option.

Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop

After visiting Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, it’s fair to say we fell in love with the ice cream and chocolate shop. The moment we noticed this same shop was in Disney Springs, we knew we had to experience this again.

I’m going to warn you now, firstly it’s not cheap and secondly, once you have visited the first time, you will want to return over and over again!

The million dollar question is…what sundae can you not resist the temptation of? The menu is pretty appetizing with plenty of tough decisions ahead of you!

Looking for our top recommendation? The “Strike It Rich Butterscotch Hot Fudge Sundae” is AMAZING! It’s a little on the “rich” side and each of the Ghirardelli sundaes is large enough to split between two people but it’s certainly a delicious choice. You can’t go wrong with anything inside Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop!

Retail Therapy at Disney Springs

Disney Springs is not only home to a variety of designer brands but also several intimate boutique establishments that will likely attract the attention of those looking to enjoy a little retail therapy.

If you are looking for merchandise at bargain prices, Disney Springs is probably not the place you are going to find this but you can certainly find a variety of Disney inspired products throughout a variety of stores.

Kate Spade is undoubtedly one of Heather’s favorite stores wherever we go, so heading inside and stumbling across a number of Minnie-inspired purses, wallets, and even earrings were certainly something our credit card wasn’t prepared to handle.

I almost forgot to mention that Disney Springs is home to the world’s largest Disney character store, with 12 rooms full of everything you could think of related to Walt Disney World. From apparel to collectible pins, this Disney Store is the ultimate pièce de résistance for all Disney shoppers.

Again, don’t expect to find too many bargains here but it’s one of those places you cannot afford to miss (well perhaps your credit card may have other ideas!).

Other Things to Do

If shopping and dining aren’t enough for you, why not head to the on-site AMC Disney Springs Movie Theatre to enjoy one of the latest Hollywood hits. Not only can you enjoy a movie, this location is also home to a dine-in experience ensuring that visitors can experience a perfect night with dinner and a movie!

Head on over to Splitsville Luxury Lanes for a late night bowling experience and you will quickly find that this takes the concept of ten-pin bowling to a whole new level. With plenty of cuisine options and live music to keep you entertained, this is definitely a great place to let your hair down and enjoy a night at Disney Springs.

Summary

Disney Springs epitomizes everything there is to love about Walt Disney World in Orlando. The beauty, however, is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to actually experience the best of Disney Springs. Admission is free and beyond that, well it’s entirely up to you how much you choose to spend.

A word of caution, Disney Springs isn’t cheap…at least in terms of the dining options and retail outlets. However, if you are simply looking to enjoy the atmosphere and feel part of the Disney experience without actually visiting the parks, this is 100% the best place to visit!

Hattie B’s – How to Enjoy the Best Nashville Hot Chicken

Nashville is home to many amazing attractions and rightfully stereotyped as being the home of country music. However, for those of you visiting Music City hoping to experience something a little different, there is certainly another iconic reason for exploring Nashville – hot chicken! That’s right, it may not sound like the most appealing cuisine or a justification for visiting a city but I would argue that this alone is well worth taking a trip to the heart of Tennessee. In our opinion, there is only one place in Nashville that serves the best chicken…welcome to Hattie B’s!

I don’t usually write posts highlighting our experience at a single restaurant but Hattie B’s isn’t like most places. In fact, I would argue that this has jumped to the very top of our list of favorite places to eat not only in Nashville but perhaps anywhere in the United States.

Hattie B’s vs Kentucky Fried Chicken

Can you even believe this sub-heading? Hattie B’s vs Kentucky Fried Chicken! Sorry folks, there is no comparison between the two but I felt for the integrity of this post and to further justify why Nashville’s finest hot chicken spot is worth visiting, I should take a step back for a minute and concentrate on what Hattie B’s is NOT.

The moment you hear “hot chicken,” it’s plausible that you are thinking about a typical fried chicken fast-food establishment such as KFC. Hattie B’s is NOTHING like KFC. Ok, so perhaps you are thinking it’s just KFC with a little heat to mask the taste of the chicken…again, it’s NOTHING like that!

So…what is Hattie B’s really like? I could say, “You will just have to try it for yourselves,” and to be fair, that is honestly the only way you are going to know. However, keep reading for a little more inspiration and to get a better idea as to what to expect!

Nashville – Home of Hot Chicken

Nashville is renowned for being the home to “hot chicken” so it’s no surprise to hear that this is the home base for Hattie B’s. But for those of you living outside of Nashville, like ourselves, don’t worry, because this brand is expanding and are already located in other spots across Tennessee and Alabama. More on that later!

Let’s start with the first question on your mind – what is Nashville hot chicken? Aside from being a local specialty, “hot chicken” is essentially fresh, fried chicken coated with a variety of spices. Dependent on how “hot” you want to enjoy your chicken will likely determine which spices are used.

Ok, so now we know what to expect when you visit Nashville but what exactly is so special about the Hattie B’s experience? Head on down to one of the THREE locations scattered across the city and be prepared for a heated encounter. Our go-to location in Nashville is on Charlotte Pike, on the west side of the city.

TOP TIP – “Patience is a virtue!” Be prepared to queue when you arrive at Hattie B’s because this is always an incredible popular restaurant, especially in Nashville…TRUST US…It’s worth the wait!!

When you visit Hattie B’s, don’t think you are visiting a 5-star restaurant because it’s far from it! Don’t let this fool you though because the rustic, charming interior is the perfect environment to enjoy the best hot chicken around. Before ordering, take a moment to check out the memorabilia for the local store and support the hot chicken phenomenon!

Hattie B’s Menu Options

Whether you are interested in a chicken breast, thigh, tender or wing, you can be sure that Hattie B’s menu will have something that intrigues you. A hot chicken sandwich or even a 1/2 bird are also available but we generally opt for the chicken tenders plate comprising three freshly prepared tenders, two sides, and bread.

Not only does Hattie B’s offer delicious chicken, their side options are also equally impressive. From crinkle cut fries to baked beans that are spicy in their own right, there are various options to satisfy everyone’s appetites. We also strongly recommend the Pimento Mac & Cheese and this is probably Heather’s favorite from the menu choices.

Take a look at the menu below for detailed information on the various options but the part that is most intriguing has to be the “heat levels.” The million dollar question here is, “How brave are you when it comes to Hattie B’s flavors?”

Hot Chicken Heat Levels

Let’s take a look at the six different flavors on offer. I want to add a caveat here that we haven’t tried all of them yet (only three at the time of publication of this post – highlighted in red).

Southern – Can’t deal with the heat? Don’t worry, that’s not going to prevent you from enjoying the awesome experience at Hattie B’s. Opt for the “Southern” flavor to simply enjoy your hot chicken without worrying about any unwanted after effects!
Mild – Ready for a touch of heat coated on your hot chicken? Perhaps the “Mild” flavor is the right choice for you. Be prepared for a little kick but nothing too much to worry about!
Medium – Temperatures are starting to heat up a little inside Hattie B’s when you opt for the “Medium” flavor. Again, nothing to get too worried about and honestly, if you are just looking for an awesome hot chicken experience with enough kick to know you have tried the best of Nashville’s iconic specialty, this is always going to be a great choice. This is definitely our go-to flavor!
Hot – It’s time to “feel the heat” to quote Hattie B’s menu! If you choose the tenders plate and opt for the “Hot” flavor, you are definitely going to know about it. By the time you finish those three tenders, your mouth will certainly be burning. I have tried this a couple of times and it’s manageable but with enough spice to make you know you have tried Nashville hot chicken!
Damn Hot – Dubbed as the “fire starter” flavor, this is certainly going to test your claims to enjoy hot chicken with real heat! Not only does the appearance and smell make you realize that this is going to be a hot experience, nothing can quite prepare you for the taste. I tried this once and have to admit it tasted great at first but soon the back of your throat feels the burn. If you love really spicy foods, this is going to be one worth experiencing!
Shut The Cluck Up!!! – Welcome to Hattie’s B’s infamous flavor – “Shut The Cluck Up!!!” I am not going to lie, I can’t wait to try this flavor because I am really intrigued as to how hot this really is. After speaking with a couple of folks, they indicated that this is the hottest chicken they have tried anywhere and that is from people that love this type of cuisine. It’s not a flavor for the faint hearted for sure but definitely a “bucket-list” experience for those visiting Nashville!

Welcome to Memphis and Beyond

Driving four hours to Nashville may sound like a great idea for a weekend getaway but when we heard the amazing news that Hattie B’s was opening a location in our home city of Memphis, well it’s fair to say we were delighted!

Located in the vibrant and thriving Cooper-Young neighborhood of Memphis, this location perfectly aligns with the Hattie B’s brand established throughout Nashville.

We recently visited the Memphis location with a hint of trepidation as we feared our high expectations would be left disappointed. How wrong could we be!! The food was delicious and honestly tasted as good if not better than all of our previous trips to the Nashville restaurant.

Hattie B’s can also be found in Birmingham, Alabama and as we see the continued success of this brand, it certainly wouldn’t surprise me to see this expand further. And why not?? More people deserve to enjoy stereotypical Nashville hot chicken and Hattie B’s can be proud to say they serve this in just the right way!

If you are planning a trip to Tennessee, why not head to the home of Elvis and enjoy exploring the various Memphis neighborhoods before hitting the open road, also known as I-40, and enjoying the drive from Memphis to Nashville. While you are planning this Tennessee adventure, don’t forget to add Hattie B’s to your itinerary, regardless of whether you choose to visit Memphis, Nashville or both.

Hot chicken may not be something that everyone will enjoy but I would argue that it’s definitely worth trying at least once. Don’t be afraid of sampling the spicier heat levels, though, in terms of personal preference, the medium flavor is definitely a safe and appetizing option. Plenty of flavors, just enough heat to provide the kick that hot chicken deserves and a great way to experience Nashville’s iconic delicacy.

One Day in Los Angeles – A Guide to the Best Things to Do

Planning a visit to any major city around the world with only 24 hours to experience the best things to do can be an incredibly challenging prospect. Not only do you have to figure out which attractions are worthwhile and “must-sees” but also you need to have a plan in mind as to how you will navigate around the metropolis in the most efficient manner to maximize your time in the city. Spending only one day in Los Angeles may sound like a crazy idea, particularly with the stereotype of this city having such awful traffic problems but of course, we always love a good challenge!

Our recent visit to California saw us spend 48 hours in Los Angeles but during our first day, we decided to put together an itinerary that would allow us to see some of the iconic sights and highlight the best way to navigate around the city. Here is our top tip that you will likely see me reiterate throughout this post, leave your car at home! That’s right, Los Angeles is best explored either on foot or using the best form of public transportation in the area – the LA Metro!

One Day in Los Angeles

Are you ready to join us on our adventure exploring the very best of LA in just 24 hours? Again, it may sound a little crazy but you may be surprised at just how much you can accomplish during a one day adventure around Los Angeles trendiest neighborhoods. From Hollywood to Santa Monica, from Beverly Hills to downtown LA, this city offers an eclectic blend of everything you could wish for in a major city.

The beauty of the LA Metro is that it’s easy to navigate, accessible to the majority of major attractions throughout LA’s neighborhoods and most importantly, incredibly affordable! For only $7 (that’s right, no typo there…$7!!!), you can enjoy a day pass that gives you unlimited journeys around the city.

Here are some of the highlights we think you can enjoy during a “fast and furious” 24 hours exploring Los Angeles. We are not suggesting that you should try and visit all of these but dependent upon your travel style, you can pick and choose which of these attractions you want to explore.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

Our adventure started by checking into the Hollywood Hotel, a luxury, boutique establishment in the heart of Tinseltown and an option that proved to be the perfect place to be based for a couple of days to explore the best of Los Angeles diverse neighborhoods.

Minutes from the Vermont/Santa Monica Metro station, the Hollywood Hotel not only checks the box for perfect location but also has an incredibly relaxing vibe that makes this ideal to relax after a long day exploring LA.

Perhaps finding a beach location either in Santa Monica or Venice Beach sounds like a more appealing choice but whether you opt for the coastal location or something further inland, Los Angeles is not short of options. Be prepared to pay a premium for the “ultimate” location but this is one reason why we found the Hollywood Hotel to be such a perfect choice given that it was relatively affordable in comparison to other options in the area.

Regardless of whether you choose to stay at the Hollywood Hotel or alternative accommodation in the area, it’s critical that you plan your itinerary in order to maximize your time.

Hollywood Area

Why not start your adventure in Los Angeles by exploring the Hollywood neighborhood and enjoying iconic landmarks such as the Walk of Fame and of course, the Hollywood Sign! Visitors to Hollywood tend to have a “love-hate” relationship with the neighborhood, primarily because many consider it to be fake but also because it’s such an iconic global hotspot that everyone feels they have to explore it at least once in their lifetime.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time and I think the key is to spend just a couple of hours exploring the best things to do in Hollywood before heading elsewhere to enjoy the rest of Los Angeles. You could easily spend the whole time trying to find your favorite star along the Walk of Fame but fortunately, many of your favorite stars are likely to be grouped together.

From Mel Gibson to George Clooney, from Ellen DeGeneres to Arnold Schwarzenegger, you can be sure that one of your favorite movie stars or musicians will be recognized in Hollywood. As long as they contributed the $30,000 sponsorship fee and made an appearance for the unveiling of the star, they are recognized alongside their fellow iconic ‘stars.’

Be prepared to get hounded by several different tour guides wanting to book you on their guided tour of the Hollywood area. It’s entirely your choice but in our opinion, a self-guided experience of Hollywood is not only a much cheaper option but equally enjoyable.

Don’t forget to walk over to the TCL Chinese Theatre to browse around all of the iconic hand/footprints while the Dolby Theatre is another iconic landmark given its role as being the home of the Academy Awards.

We opted to get off the Metro at Hollywood/Vine and then wander along Hollywood Boulevard to explore these iconic attractions. Once you are finished enjoying the best of the Hollywood neighborhood, hop back on the Metro to downtown LA!

Downtown Los Angeles

If you choose to head downtown Los Angeles, there are a few iconic spots that you cannot afford to miss. The Staples Center, for example, is the home to the LA Lakers, LA Clippers, LA Sparks and LA Kings and is undoubtedly one of the most iconic sporting venues throughout the world.

You won’t be surprised to see tourists from all corners of the globe grabbing a selfie with one of their favorite statues outside the Staples Center. The recent unveiling of Shaquille O’Neal becoming the fifth LA Lakers player to ever receive a statue puts him alongside the likes of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and for today’s generation, is certainly one of the fan favorite attractions outside Staples.

Take a step inside the Team LA Store to grab your favorite merchandise and visiting the Staples Center during the day is definitely the ideal time to browse the store. Perhaps you can stop by the box office and grab tickets to an event while you are in town…more on that experience later!

Ready for lunch after an action-packed morning? Head across the street to the LA Live Entertainment Complex and choose from a variety of global cuisine options. We opted for Yard House which offers an eclectic blend of options and offers you the chance to sample a selection from more than 100 taps of the best American craft beers.

Santa Monica

After exploring the heart of urban Los Angeles, hop back on the LA Metro and take a short 45-minute journey to Santa Monica where you will be transported to a haven of coastal bliss and beauty.

Whether you are intrigued by the prospect of spending a couple of hours on the beach by the gorgeous Pacific Ocean or perhaps mingling in the open-air Santa Monica Pier, you can be sure that time will quickly get away from you as you experience this beautiful neighborhood.

I was surprised to find out that the Pier is actually 109 years old and features the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. With plenty of local restaurants, souvenir shops, and hangout spots, it’s understandable that this is a hugely popular attraction in Santa Monica for visitors and locals alike.

Although the Pier and beaches along the Santa Monica coastline are the iconic attractions, take some time to explore the downtown area which offers the Third Street Promenade, another open-air shopping experience and Santa Monica Place, an upscale eclectic blend of restaurants, bars, and high-end retail stores.

Live Sporting Events

Los Angeles may be renowned for Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the gorgeous beaches along the Pacific coastline but this city is also famous for being a haven for sporting events. From the iconic legends that have graced the court at the Staples Center in the purple and yellow of the LA Lakers to the best baseball players that have worn the LA Dodgers shirts, there is something for everyone that loves sports.

For those of you visiting Los Angeles during the “off-season” for basketball, don’t worry because you may have the opportunity to watch the WNBA’s LA Sparks team. The benefit of attending one of these games is that tickets are cheaper meaning you will get better seats and there is still plenty of action to enjoy.

If you love soccer, or football as we call it in Europe, why not head over to Carson to enjoy the LA Galaxy. You can take the LA Metro all the way from Hollywood as we did and take one of the free shuttles from a couple of different metro stations to the stadium.

LA and sport go hand in hand, so be sure to check the various sporting teams and you will likely find that one or more of them are playing during your visit. The tough decision will come when several of them are playing at the same time!

Venice Beach

Looking for a unique experience while exploring Los Angeles? Head to the bohemian beach town of Venice, just a few miles south of Santa Monica. If you choose to visit Venice in the evening rather than attending a sporting event, you can hop on the local bus from Santa Monica to explore the best of this vibrant town.

Renowned as being the “Venice of America,” this upscale location is known for its popular boardwalk area and the iconic canals that you would normally associate with the original European counterpart. Breathtaking residences line the canals and visitors can enjoy the charming location while admiring the gorgeous houses.

The shopper’s paradise of Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a popular hotspot for visitors but perhaps a romantic evening at one of the local restaurants offering eclectic cuisine options from around the world will inspire you to visit.

Take a stroll along the coastline to admire the stunning sunset over the Pacific Ocean or enjoy meandering through the canals as you imagine a gondola or two winding its way through the Venetian waterways.

Summary

Spending only 24 hours in any city around the world and hoping to see the best things to do is an incredibly challenging prospect. Los Angeles is certainly no different but thanks to the awesome public transportation system, we think that this is one that you can enjoy some of the best attractions if you organize your itinerary effectively.

From the gorgeous coastal towns of Venice Beach and Santa Monica to the heart of the downtown metropolis, Los Angeles has a myriad of neighborhoods that you could easily spend 24 hours exploring on their own. But exploring all of these in only one day is an exciting experience you will quickly fall in love with.

The beauty of following an itinerary like this is that even if you are planning on spending multiple days in the LA area, you can head back to some of these spots later in your trip knowing that you have covered the best things to do and also to give you an idea as to why Los Angeles is such a popular city for visitors from across the globe.

When you think about Southern California, it’s fair to say that the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or perhaps even the natural beauty throughout Yosemite National Park will be at the forefront of your mind. But what about if you head further south and explore the very tip of Southern California? That’s right, on the edge of the Mexican/US border is the city of San Diego and let me tell you, it’s a city that needs to be on your radar! Let’s take a look at how we recommend spending an awesome 48 hours in San Diego.

Whether you have a day or a week to explore San Diego, this is a city that oozes character, beauty and of course, plenty of attractions to keep you occupied. San Diego may not be the first place you think about visiting when you think about the state of California but after reading this post, we are convinced that this city will at least be on your radar. It’s one of those cities that has that effect on you!

Where to Stay in San Diego?

The beauty of visiting San Diego is that if you are flying into the international airport, you are just a short drive from the downtown area where all the main attractions are located. Hop in an Uber and for only $10 you will be transported to your chosen hotel in the downtown vicinity.

Whether you want to stay in the Gaslamp Quarter, also renowned as the heartbeat of the city or perhaps prefer to stay in a more isolated, bayside setting on Coronado Island, there are plenty of accommodation options available. Here are a couple of our favorites that we think will appeal for multiple reasons:

48 Hours in San Diego

It may not sound like much time but 48 hours is plenty of time to explore many of San Diego’s top attractions. The beauty of this city is that everything is easily within walking distance or a short public transportation ride. Biking in San Diego is another great way to explore, so regardless of your chosen method, there is plenty to experience in a short time.

We have designed this itinerary based on our own experiences and there is even time for a little spontaneity so that you can add a few customized choices to this visit.

Here are the top things to do that you cannot afford to miss during your next visit to San Diego:

USS Midway Museum
Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo
Gaslamp Quarter
Coronado Island

If you manage to experience all of the above in 48 hours, you will have one heck of an amazing visit to San Diego!! As you will see, the San Diego Zoo is itself an experience you could easily spend a full day enjoying but of course, depending on how much time you have in the region will likely determine how many of these attractions you want to see.

The beauty of all the above-listed attractions is that they are easily accessible. Coronado Island may be the most challenging but with a ferry service available from multiple locations or a cheap Uber always just a few minutes away, you can easily add this to your itinerary when planning a visit to San Diego.

USS Midway Museum

Have you ever had an up close and personal encounter with an aircraft carrier? Me either, at least until I visited the USS Midway in San Diego! The first thing you notice is the sheer size and magnitude of this vessel. Measuring a little over 1,000 feet in length, this was a true “beast” in the US naval fleet.

The USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century until it was finally able to rest and decommissioned in San Diego in 1992. It was left in storage until 2003 before finally opening as the USS Midway Museum in 2004.

Visitors today can take a stroll along the San Diego promenade to admire the beauty of the USS Midway before purchasing tickets to hop inside and learn all about the history and features onboard this vessel.

Whether you are intrigued by the thought of hopping on the flight deck to admire more than 30 restored aircraft (and enjoy amazing views of San Diego Bay!) or perhaps head below deck and explore the spaces where crew lived and worked on a daily basis, your adventure around the USS Midway Museum will likely leave you in awe at this amazing attraction.

Don’t forget to experience the “Battle of Midway Theater” where you can watch a 15-minute film highlighting one of World War II’s iconic naval battles. Listen to first-hand experiences from crew members that fought in this battle while onboard the USS Midway. For those of you that are ready for an interactive experience, check out the two flight simulators where all ages can enjoy an experience of a lifetime.

Balboa Park

New York City is home to Central Park; London is home to Hyde Park; San Diego is home to Balboa Park! After visiting this amazing urban green space in the heart of the city, I can 100% confirm that this should be categorized in the same fashion as those infamous urban parks around the world. Balboa Park is a 1,200 acre urban, cultural space filled with a distinctive blend of museums, iconic architecture, nature and of course, the San Diego Zoo!

Balboa Park is an area that you can easily spend several days exploring but if you are wanting to capture just the highlights, you can enjoy several hours experiencing the very best spots.

Balboa Park has enough arts, culture, and attractions to fill days, weeks, months!

If you only want to spend a few hours, here are the top attractions you won’t want to miss. The California Tower is part of the California Building that houses the Museum of Man. Head to the courtyard to admire this majestic architectural masterpiece before walking through to an area full of Spanish inspired architecture.

The Casa del Prado and Casa de Balboa are two examples of reconstructions to commemorate the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. If you love European architecture, this part of San Diego will surely inspire you to want to head across the pond to explore some of Gaudi’s finest work in Barcelona.

Balboa Park is home to 17 different museums and cultural institutions, so trying to figure out which one to visit can be a challenging prospect. For those of you that want to experience San Diego on a budget, the Timken Museum of Art is a FREE attraction full of works by European artists and featuring the only Rembrandt painting on public display in the city.

As you explore Balboa Park, you could be forgiven for thinking this is more of an urban space because of the various museums and buildings scattered throughout. However, don’t let this stop you from admiring the nature on display. Take a moment to stroll through Alcazar Garden, renowned as one of the most photogenic locations throughout the park.

Regardless of whether you choose to visit the San Diego Zoo, you can be assured that Balboa Park will have plenty to keep you occupied during your visit. The tough part will be trying to put together an itinerary to see as much as possible in only a few hours…unless of course, you want to spend 48 hours exploring everything Balboa Park has to offer!

Gaslamp Quarter

The heartbeat of San Diego can be found in the Gaslamp Quarter, a lively neighborhood with an eclectic blend of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. If you choose to visit the Gaslamp Quarter during the day, you can not only experience a myriad of delicious cuisine but also enjoy a self-guided walking tour of the area where you can admire a number of gorgeous buildings.

The Balboa Theatre, for example, was recently renowned as one of the world’s most spectacular theatres by CNN Travel. Dating back to 1924 when construction was completed, this theatre was a state-of-the-art building before facing some years of uncertainty in the 1950s when it almost faced demolition.

Fortunately, the Russo family saved this theatre and after years of renovation, it was transformed into a contemporary modern art venue. Whether you choose to attend a performance or simply admire this building on the outside, it’s a place you won’t want to miss while exploring the Gaslamp Quarter.

Ready for a bite to eat in this neighborhood? There are plenty of awesome local restaurants to choose from, in addition to a couple of chain spots such as The Old Spaghetti Factory.

But a visit to San Diego is all about the local cuisine, so head inside one of the following restaurants to sample some of the finest and delicious food in the city.

UNION Kitchen & Tap Gaslamp – A great spot to enjoy lunch (or brunch on the weekend) while sampling one of the local craft beers on tap.
Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers – After a long day exploring San Diego’s plethora of attractions, head downtown to enjoy a cold beer and delicious cheeseburger. This spot immediately made me think about Huey’s in Memphis, another of our favorite local dining spots when looking to enjoy a burger.
Henry’s Pub – A visit to San Diego wouldn’t be the same without sampling the local seafood options. Fish and Chips is always a menu choice I enjoy and I can highly recommend Henry’s Pub in the Gaslamp district if you are ready to indulge in a stereotypical British dish!

A visit to the Gaslamp Quarter will also give you the opportunity to experience Petco Park, home of the MLB team, the San Diego Padres. For the baseball aficionados out there, hopefully, you will have the opportunity to watch the Padres in action but regardless, it’s a pretty spectacular ballpark, even from the outside.

Coronado Island

Ready to explore San Diego’s pristine beaches, luxury accommodation options including the amazing Hotel del Coronado and a variety of amazing cuisine options? Head across to Coronado Island and experience the very best of all the above and much more!

The best way to visit Coronado Island is to hop on the ferry from either the San Diego Convention Center or Broadway, just a few steps from the USS Midway Museum. For only $4.50 each way, you can enjoy a relaxing journey across the bay before arriving at Coronado Island.

Arriving at Coronado Island, you can enjoy the ferry landing with a variety of restaurants, bars and local shops immediately capturing your attention. We strongly recommend wearing a comfortable pair of shoes and then walking across to the other side of the island to enjoy the amazing beaches along the Pacific Ocean…oh yes, and of course, visiting the infamous hotel!

Summary

San Diego is a fun-filled city with plenty of attractions and experiences to keep you occupied for much longer than 48 hours. This is a city that we consider to be perfect for a weekend getaway, particularly given the close proximity of all the attractions that we referenced.

Places such as San Diego’s Old Town and Seaport Village weren’t even mentioned in this itinerary but if you are looking for additional places to enjoy authentic, local cuisine, both of these should be on your radar.

San Diego is unlike anywhere else in California and it’s this uniqueness that makes this a city we immediately fell in love with. We look forward to returning again in the near future and certainly think you will agree when you next venture out west. By the way, hopefully you will encounter some epic sunsets just like we did!

Enjoy an Amazing 48 Hours in the Heart of the Melbourne CBD

Have you ever imagined what it’s like to explore the world’s most livable city? We had an opportunity to experience a week in Melbourne, Australia and it’s no surprise that we immediately realized why this beautiful city earned that coveted accolade. We used our time in Melbourne to take a trip along the infamous Great Ocean Road but the majority of our time was spent in the heart of the Melbourne CBD.

Downtown Melbourne is a beautiful area full of historic architecture, a number of parks where you can relax and enjoy nature away from the urban environment and of course, a variety of iconic sporting venues that make this city so popular.

We haven’t even mentioned the delicious local and international cuisine options that are available throughout the diverse neighborhoods that have helped Melbourne become the world’s most livable city.

Although we spent a week in Melbourne, we want to share how you can enjoy 48 hours in this city. Let’s take a look at some of the top attractions you can enjoy if you only have two days here, but first, we want to recommend a great place to stay in the heart of the city.

Where to Stay in the Melbourne CBD?

If you are considering exploring Melbourne in the near future, you will likely want to figure out the best place to stay in the central business district. There are plenty of options but we highly recommend the Pullman Melbourne on the Park.

But why is this the best hotel in the Melbourne CBD? A number of reasons but the old saying of “Location, Location, Location” springs to mind when assessing the advantages of this hotel.

In close proximity to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Pullman Melbourne on the Park provides easy access to downtown but is far enough away from the main hustle and bustle of the city to enable guests to relax and enjoy the solitude of nearby Fitzroy Gardens.

Arriving at the iconic Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, we hopped on the free tram and took a short walk to the hotel. This proved to be a great location to head out and explore the rest of the city, especially being able to use the free tram network which is a great method of public transportation in Melbourne.

We enjoyed two nights at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park and having devoured an amazing breakfast both mornings, we were ready to head out and explore everything the “City by the Bay” had to offer. The most difficult part about staying at the Pullman Melbourne on the Parks is that everything about the hotel entices you to stay inside or enjoy the amenities available rather than heading out to explore!

48 Hour Itinerary to Explore Melbourne’s CBD

If you only have 48 hours to explore Melbourne, be prepared to wake up early and don your walking boots because there is a lot to see in such a short time. Don’t worry, it’s well worth the effort and you will appreciate making the most of your time here.

Here is a recommended itinerary with some of our favorite attractions and landmarks that you cannot afford to miss:

Day 1

Breakfast at Pullman Melbourne on the Park
Walk to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (We enjoyed the Boxing Day test match between Australia and Pakistan during our recent visit)
Walk through Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open tennis tournament
Explore Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and have lunch or morning tea here
Visit the Shrine of Remembrance
Visit the Eureka Skydeck
Dinner at a restaurant along Degraves Street
Take a stroll along the banks of the Yarra River en route back to the hotel

Day 2

Breakfast at Pullman Melbourne on the Park
Hop on the free tram and visit Flinders Street Station
Walk across to St. Paul’s Cathedral
Take the free tram to the Docklands area to visit the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel and enjoy lunch here with some local Fish and Chips
Explore Parliament House, Parliament Gardens and nearby St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Visit Carlton Gardens, Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum
Head to the Queen Victoria Market to experience this historic spot
Take a stroll along Bourke Street Mall for a little retail therapy
Enjoy a late dinner along either Hardware Lane or Little Bourke Street (Chinatown)

Both days may seem like a lot but a lot of these attractions are within a relatively short walking distance of each other. The free tram network is also a great resource to take advantage of while exploring Melbourne’s iconic attractions. This type of itinerary does not lend itself to spending a lot of time at all of these spots.

Let’s take a look at some of our favorite places that you could likely spend a little more time visiting.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

It’s one of the iconic cricket venues around the world and just passing by the “MCG” is a memorable experience. If you are able to spend a little more time in Melbourne, try to find tickets and attend a cricket match because inside the MCG is even more spectacular.

We felt incredibly fortunate to attend one of the Australia’s most iconic sporting events – the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and Pakistan. Walking around the outside of the stadium, you will pass by statues of some of Australia’s most infamous cricketers – Sir Donald Bradman, Shane Warne, and Dennis Lillee to name just a few.

Melbourne Park

Take a short stroll from the MCG to explore another iconic sporting venue, Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open tennis tournament. Preparations for the 2017 tournament were underway as we walked through the venue but just thinking about the legends that have walked these grounds was an awesome feeling.

From the historic Rod Laver and Margaret Court Arenas to the newer Hisense Arena, just walking through this venue en route to the Royal Botanic Gardens made us realize that we have to make a return trip to Melbourne during the Australian Open.

Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

The walk from the Pullman Melbourne on the Park to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne may seem like a fair distance but after passing through two of the world’s most iconic sporting venues, you will soon realize it’s worth the effort.

As we crossed the Yarra River and entered these Botanical Gardens, we soon felt transformed from an urban environment to an area of relaxation and solitude. A moment of quietness could be found with the only sounds being emitted from the local wildlife going about their daily routine.

You could easily spend hours exploring the 94 acres of these gardens but a quick visit to the local tea room to enjoy a very British cream tea (scone with vanilla bean cream and jam!) was the perfect way to cap and awesome morning in these gardens.

Shrine of Remembrance

On the edge of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne is another iconic landmark, the Shrine of Remembrance. It’s historic, it’s architecturally beautiful and the views from the summit are breathtaking as you admire the Melbourne skyline.

Originally constructed in 1934 to serve as a tribute to those folks from Victoria that served in World War I, the Shrine of Remembrance is now a fitting memorial to all Australians that have served in wars around the world.

Eureka Skydeck

A trip to Melbourne wouldn’t be the same without taking a trip to the Eureka Skydeck at the summit of one Australia’s tallest buildings. The most intriguing aspect of this visit is “The Edge” which offers visitors the opportunity to test their nerve and head out on a glass platform with the city of Melbourne below them.

Flinders Street Station and St. Paul’s Cathedral

Melbourne is an iconic city and possibly two of the most quintessential landmarks are Flinders Street Station and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Directly opposite each other on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Street, these are historical landmarks that you should spend some time admiring.

Flinders Street Station dates back to the start of the 20th century when construction started in 1905. Before the development of Federation Square, this railway station was frequently known as Melbourne’s favorite meeting place.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is much more modern as it opened in 1931 but unequivocally offers a place of beauty and worship unlike anywhere else in the city.

Docklands Area

Why not take a 30-minute romantic journey on the Melbourne Star to enjoy stunning views of the Melbourne skyline. This observation wheel is located in the Docklands area which is a great area accessible via the free tram network and offers one of Melbourne’s best retail spots – Harbour Town Outlet.

The Docklands area may not technically be in the heart of the Melbourne CBD but it’s a great place to visit for shopping, restaurants, and of course, for the stunning views of the downtown area.

Not only can you enjoy a little retail therapy here at affordable prices, we also recommend sampling The Fish Dept. for lunch or dinner. There is nothing quite like Aussie style fish and chips.

As you wind down your day exploring Melbourne, head back on the free tram to take advantage of your second trip around the Melbourne Star (purchase a ticket that allows two visits and take one during the day and after dark).

Parliament House and St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Having explored much of Melbourne’s “modern-day” infrastructure, be sure to spend some time visiting historic locations like Parliament House and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Both of these locations date back to the 19th century, offering visitors an opportunity to see what Melbourne was like during its founding years (Melbourne was founded on the Yarra River in 1835).

The Gardens outside of the Parliament House offer another relaxing environment, particularly the cascading cool water that streams out of the Coles Fountain in the center of these Gardens.

For those of you that have a passion for architecture, you will soon realize that St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a stereotypical example of Gothic Revival design. Not only is it hugely impressive in terms of the intricate details of the design, it can also lay claim to being the tallest church in Australia!

Carlton Gardens

A short walk from Parliament Gardens if you head north along Nicholson Street will lead you to a World Heritage Site. Carlton Gardens is designated as such in conjunction with the Royal Exhibition Building which sits in the middle of these gardens.

Carlton Gardens offer gorgeous fountains, blooming floral arrangements and perfectly manicured trees that will make botanists quiver with delight as they wander through this gorgeous park.

Locals and visitors alike can be seen relaxing on the grass as they admire the architecture and surrounding beauty that creates a perfect environment to enjoy the Melbourne sun.

Queen Victoria Market

Locals will claim that you have saved the best until last if you choose to visit the Queen Victoria Market at the end of your 48 hours exploring the Melbourne CBD. Frequently referred to as the “heart and soul” of Melbourne, this popular attraction is a great place for locals to enjoy local food halls or simply stroll around the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere.

We visited the “Queen Vic” on Christmas Day during our recent visit to Melbourne so of course, it was closed! This was one of the most disappointing aspects of our visit and we cannot wait to head back to Melbourne just to experience the hustle and bustle of life in this historic marketplace.

Relaxation

As you can see, this was a pretty action-packed itinerary but if you only have a short time in this vibrant city, you have to make the most of it. Be sure to check out many of the local offers available to enjoy a little relaxation while in the city, such as Groupon’s spa deals in Melbourne. Just like anywhere else in the world, Groupon is always one of our favorite “go-to” apps to find the best local deals.

After a long day of exploring, there is nothing quite like having the opportunity to unwind and enjoy the “ultimate” relaxing spa experience.

For those of you that prefer to unwind with your favorite aperitif, don’t worry, Melbourne is home to a variety of awesome bars, restaurants and coffee shops where you can just hang out with the locals and find out the best local spots across the city.

Summary

If you only have 48 hours to spend in the Melbourne CBD, you must be crazy! In all seriousness, you can see a lot of Melbourne’s iconic attractions in a short time, primarily because many of them are in close proximity to each other and also because the free tram network is an awesome way to get around the city.

For those of you that can spend a little longer here, I am sure you will be intrigued by many of the attractions we have mentioned and you will likely want to spend more time in each one learning about the history and beauty of these spots.

We can’t speak highly enough of the Pullman Melbourne on the Park Hotel. A Guide to the Best Hikes in Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park in the heart of Southern California may not have the instant breathtaking landscapes comparable to the likes of Yellowstone or Yosemite but what it does have is a distinctive and unique blend of natural beauty. A 2-hour drive from the heart of downtown Los Angeles ensures that Joshua Tree is a popular national park and during our recent visit to SoCal, we decided to take a day trip to find out why this is such an attractive destination for outdoors aficionados. Based on our experiences, we want to highlight some of the best hikes in Joshua Tree that you can enjoy during a one-day visit!

Whether you are a passionate outdoor adventurist that loves rock climbing, mountaineering, and strenuous hiking or simply someone that wants to enjoy epic natural landscapes, you will quickly find that Joshua Tree has something for everyone.

Let’s take a look at how you can best enjoy your visit to Joshua Tree. As always, we strongly encourage you to purchase a National Park Annual Pass so that you can enter Joshua Tree for free and if you are staying in the area, you will want to use this guide to sample several of these hiking trails.

Where is Joshua Tree NP?

Joshua Tree National Park covers 794,000 acres that intersect the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Located only 130 miles east of Los Angeles, this is the perfect place to head outside of an urban environment to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

Depending on which entrance you choose to start will determine which landscape you immediately face. There are three park entrances, each offering a unique look at Joshua Tree’s landscape.

West Entrance – Located five miles south of the junction of Highway 62 and Park Boulevard at Joshua Tree Village
North Entrance – Located in Twentynine Palms, three miles south of the junction of Highway 62 and Utah Trail.
South Entrance – Located near Cottonwood Spring along I-10, 25 miles east of Indio.

What is a Joshua Tree?

I want to reiterate, if you are heading to Joshua Tree with the impression that this national park is directly comparable to some of the best parks in terms of scenery, this is a very unique landscape that everyone may not appreciate.

As the name suggests, it’s a landscape full of “Joshua” trees…but you may be wondering, as we were, what exactly is a Joshua Tree?

A Joshua Tree is a form of a yucca that grows as a tree and has clusters of spiky leaves, native to arid regions of southwestern North America.

Ok, so that should hopefully clear up any thoughts that Joshua Tree was named after a U2 album…it’s true, I have heard a lot of people associate this national park only with the Irish band and not for a species of yucca!

Best Hikes in Joshua Tree National Park

The beauty of Joshua Tree is that there is a myriad of amazing hiking trails, all of which can be experienced during a day trip. Although the following list certainly isn’t exhaustive and there will always be some other trails available to take spontaneously, this will at least give you an idea for planning an itinerary to explore the best of Joshua Tree.

Ryan Mountain Trail
Warren Peak Trail
Hidden Valley Trail
Cholla Cactus Garden Trail
Skull Rock Trail

Joshua Tree’s hiking trails offer everything from amazing rock formations to spectacular overlooks across the open desert. The huge boulders throughout Joshua Tree are iconic representations of the geology in this part of Southern California but regardless of which geological formations you are intrigued by, this national park has something for everyone.

Hiking trails throughout Joshua Tree range from easy to strenuous but the beauty of many of them is that they are relatively short so you can easily experience several in the same day. A close up look at each of the trails along with some of the amazing landscapes you can experience around Joshua Tree will hopefully give you some inspiration to grab your favorite hiking boots and check out this untouched landscape.

Ryan Mountain Trail

Distance – 3 Miles
Difficulty – Moderate
Hiking Time – 1.5-2.5 Hours

If you are looking to enjoy one of the most popular hikes in Joshua Tree, be sure to add the Ryan Mountain trail to your itinerary. An “out and back” style trail, this offers visitors the opportunity to hike to the summit of Ryan Mountain and enjoy breathtaking panoramic scenes of San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, and Pleasant Valley, to name just a few of the epic landscapes.

From the moment you leave the parking lot, you should be prepared for a pretty steep incline but keep telling yourself that the views will be worth the effort. An elevation increase of 1,075 feet may sound like a challenging prospect and I’m not going to lie, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted but the rewards await those that push through the pain barrier. The trail is incredibly well maintained and offers some of the best in the park.

The gorgeous sight of red and orange stones means that you have arrived at the site of Wonderland of Rocks but it’s once you reach the summit that you will be rewarded with the incredible views across Joshua Tree. Be sure to take some time at the summit to admire the scenery before heading back down the trail.

Warren Peak Trail

Distance – 5.5 Miles
Difficulty – Difficult
Hiking Time – 3-4 Hours

Located in the northwest corner of Joshua Tree, the Warren Peak Trail is one of the most challenging yet rewarding hikes throughout the park. Be prepared to take a half day or potentially longer to experience this hike and perhaps this is only for those that are planning on spending multiple days at Joshua Tree.

The trail to the summit of Warren Peak starts on the Black Rock Canyon Trail beyond the campsites located here. You will likely find that this is a pretty quiet trail so for several miles it may be just yourself, your thoughts and the dense abyss known as Joshua Tree National Park. Don’t let this convince you to stay away because the scenery is pretty epic!

Once you reach the summit, just like Ryan Mountain, you will be 100% glad that you made the effort to hike to the top. The panoramic landscapes of nearby Mt. San Jacinto and Mt. San Gorgonio along with the obvious views of Joshua Tree National Park are beyond incredible. Ready for the good news?? It’s all downhill from the summit so relax and give yourself a pat on the back for such an amazing accomplishment!

Hidden Valley Trail

Distance – 1 Mile
Difficulty – Easy
Hiking Time – 30-60 minutes

If the thought of the first two trails is a little too much for you, don’t worry because Joshua Tree has plenty of “easy” hikes for all the family to enjoy. Regardless of your fitness levels or desire to challenge yourself, the Hidden Valley trail is the perfect hike to enjoy the best of Joshua Tree.

Ever seen the Flintstones? Ok, take a moment to think about the town of Bedrock and this is exactly what we thought about when strolling around the huge stacks of boulders that are scattered across this landscape. For the geologists out there, these stacks are made up of monzogranite which is “biotite granite rocks that are considered to be the final fractionation product of magma.”

The valley itself can be enjoyed at any time of the day but I have to admit, there is an eerie beauty about exploring Hidden Valley either at sunrise or sunset. The angle of the sun reflecting against the boulders creates a magical experience and certainly epitomizes why Joshua Tree’s landscape is so popular among outdoor lovers.

Cholla Cactus Garden Trail

Distance – 0.3 Mile
Difficulty – Easy
Hiking Time – 20-30 minutes

Ready for a short yet thrilling hike through an area of cactus growth? Head over to Cholla Cactus Garden for a weird yet wonderful trail through some of Joshua Tree’s finest collection of fauna. As you stroll through this garden, please remember, DO NOT TOUCH these cacti unless you want to spoil the rest of your trip and suffer the consequences of favoring a cactus for a while!

The fuzzy appearance of the Cholla Cactus may offer picture-perfect selfie opportunities but these are undoubtedly one of the most painful cacti in the park.

For those of you entering Joshua Tree at the Cottonwood Visitor Center near I-10, this short interpretive trail may be the first attraction you want to explore. You can easily enjoy this hike in less than 30 minutes but you will leave with a whole new perception of cacti habitats.

Skull Rock Trail

Distance – 1.7 Miles
Difficulty – Easy
Hiking Time – 60-90 minutes

The easiest attraction to visit throughout Joshua Tree is perhaps also the most iconic – Skull Rock! Hidden amongst a plethora of rock formations, there is one unique design that epitomizes the shape of a skull. It’s no surprise that this is such a popular attraction, not only because it’s such a unique geological feature but also because of it’s location directly off the scenic drive that runs through the park.

For those of you intrigued by the thought of exploring more bizarre rock formations, take the 1.7-mile hiking trail that leads you through a variety of landscapes, all of which are unique and equally breathtaking.

As your eyes gaze around the landscape, you could be forgiven for thinking that many of the other rock formations look like skulls…not going to lie, we fell into the trap of thinking that one other was Skull rock even though we later realized it was not the actual one.

Summary

Joshua Tree may not have the same “wow” factor as it’s more infamous counterparts such as Yosemite, Yellowstone et al but what it does possess is a unique landscape that everyone should explore at least once in their lifetime. The iconic presence of “Joshua Tree yuccas” scattered across this landscape create a memorable experience and combining this with the amazing rock formations, you have an amazing landscape perfect for outdoor lovers.

We thoroughly enjoyed the shorter hiking trails around Joshua Tree, particular the distinctive Cholla Cactus Garden and Skull Rock Trail but regardless of which trails you choose, we are convinced you will have an amazing visit to this national park.

The million dollar question…is it worth the $25 admission fee? Honestly, this is where we would strongly encourage you to pay for the annual pass because this is by far the best way to get the best value out of any national park visit.

Whether you are contemplating visiting the gorgeous lighthouses and delicious seafood around the New England states or perhaps heading further south to the iconic attractions such as Walt Disney World in Florida, there is something quite spectacular about the East coast in the US that makes this such an attractive destination for many reasons. Road tripping is undoubtedly the best way to experience the best the United States has to offer. By collaborating with some of our friends from the travel blogging world, we have put together a post highlighting the best East coast USA road trips.

We are all familiar with New York City, Boston, Washington DC etc. but what about those lesser known destinations that are frequently hidden among these larger counterparts? Unfortunately, flying into these major metropolitan areas means that you frequently miss the smaller, hidden gems but by hitting the open road, this enables you to stumble across attractions and locations you may never have considered previously.

Best East Coast USA Road Trips

Road tripping has always been a popular pastime for the American traveler and let’s be honest, it’s certainly with good reason! Affordable gas prices, miles and miles of open road with a myriad of charming attractions along every itinerary and of course, a desire to explore the unknown is always going to be enough inspiration to justify hopping inside your car and experiencing this road trip phenomenon.

Just as we saw with the West coast, the East coast is littered with plenty of options, far more than we could ever cover in a post like this. So how do you even begin to filter out the best of the best? It’s all down to personal perspective, hence the reason we called upon some fellow travel experts to give their honest opinions as to where you cannot afford to miss when you start contemplating the best road trips along the East coast.

A road trip from Washington DC to Charleston is in order if you have any interest in American history, theme parks, tree-lined highways and topping it all off with relaxing on the beach.

Start with the attractions in DC that are really light on your budget. Most museums are free. You can also contact your congressman to get tickets to the White House and Capitol Building tours. If it is in your budget, make your way to Rose’s Luxury for dinner and sit at the bar next to the kitchen.

Leaving DC, stop in Williamsburg for a few days. As an added bonus, the drive is beautiful when the trees that line the highway are full of leaves and even more amazing when they are turning colors in the fall.

Take a day or two at the world-class theme park, Busch Gardens Williamsburg and a day at Water Country USA to cool down in the water and enjoy some thrills. Spend some time exploring Historic Williamsburg by taking a ghost tour at night. For breakfast, make sure you don’t miss a local diner for simple, affordable eats with a local flare like the Colonial Pancake House.

Leaving Williamsburg, it is up to you how much time you want to spend in North Carolina. You may just want to power through the 6-hour drive or stop in Raleigh or even make a detour to spend some time in Charlotte or Asheville.

Arriving in Charleston there is plenty to see, but make sure you spend some time on one of the nearby beaches relaxing. Walk around admiring the centuries-old mansions and cobblestone streets and make sure you enjoy some of the delicious southern cuisines.

Shenandoah National Park – Skyline Drive

I’ve driven Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park three times: in spring, autumn, and in winter. No matter the season or weather, Skyline Drive never disappoints. It’s a beautiful raised country drive above a gorgeous mountain valley. Nearby, you can visit wineries, a craft brewery, and see the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Monticello and the University of Virginia.

The drive itself is about a hundred miles long, with no amenities (just nature) except for a visitor center near the middle of the route. The drive is open year-round and twenty-four hours a day; however, it is best done during daylight or for sunrise or sunset.

There are dozens of overlooks to stop at and take in the stunning views, and the speed limit is relegated to 35 miles an hour. This is great for solo drivers who want to appreciate the beauty from the driver’s seat and stay safe at the same time.

Another reason for the low speed is to keep the road safe for wild animals who may cross the road; however, I’ve never seen one while I was here. Whenever I find myself in southern Virginia needing to head north, I always detour to make sure that I take Skyline Drive north, since it’s one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

Boston to Miami

With family and friends up and down the east coast, I frequently hop in the car with buddies to drive good old Route 95. While it’s a solid 24-hours of driving if you go straight through from Boston to Miami, there are a zillion things to see along the road!

The best way to tackle this mega 1,490-mile route is to do so in three days. Try a medium-sized drive the first day, a longer one the second, then another longish one the third.

You can go through NYC, but you’ll want to avoid big cities and traffic as much as possible. We opted instead to stay as close to the coast as we could and ended up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after a six-hour drive. It’s a fun place for just a night of good food, drink and trying your hand at the casinos. But don’t overdo it; you’ve got 11 hours to Charleston, South Carolina next.

Get an early start and enjoy a little bit of this fun southern city overnight. From there, Miami, Florida, is another 8-hour stint. You can see a few funny landmarks on this leg, including the “kitschy but crazy” South of the Border truck stop.

If you want to switch it up on the way back, consider an overnight in Savannah, which is 8 hours from Miami. Friends driving together to make the long haul all the way to Boston in one day like we did taking shifts, but I advise enjoying one more overnight in-between, such as Richmond, Virginia or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Boston to Acadia National Park

It may only take five hours of driving to road trip from Boston to Acadia National Park in Maine, but what an incredible drive it is! One of the best aspects of New England is how many charming destinations are packed in so close together, making it one of the best places in the USA for a road trip.

Start your route in Boston, where you can get a taste of one of the oldest cities in the USA: explore charming neighborhoods like Beacon Hill, Back Bay, and the North End, sample delicious Italian food, and learn some early US History along the Freedom Trail.

From there, start your drive to Acadia National Park, where breathtaking views from Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond, and more await you–plus some of the best food in New England, of course!

No visit to Acadia National Park is complete without sampling popovers from Jordan Pond House, a lobster roll from one of the dozens of lobster shacks on the water, and of course, blueberry flavored everything, from blueberry muffins to blueberry wine.

Depending on how much time you have, this short road trip can be extended to any number of destinations along the way: the shortest route takes you right through the charming port town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as the fun and exciting Portland, Maine (if you’re a craft beer fan, stop here!).

Short detours would also allow you to add on destinations like Lexington and Concord for a US History buff, Salem for those interested in the famous witch trials (or just cute New England towns), and the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire for hiking enthusiasts.

Boston to Maine

Perkins Cove

A 75 Mile drive from Boston in 1 hour 15 mins will take you to the beautiful coastal town of Perkins Cove.

Marginal Way walk at Ogunquit was a highlight of my road trip. With its beautiful beaches, artistic mansions & eclectic food scene, this is one of New England’s most scenic Coastal walk. The walk is for 2 KMs which starts at the entrance of Ogunquit’s Main Street and exits at the Perkins Cove, the cute little town.

Kennebunkport

Another 12.5 Miles drive in 25 mins will drive you to the town of Kennebunkport

A popular vacation spot for politicians, Kennebunkport boasts mansions overlooking the cliff & the Atlantic Ocean. A great place for good strolls & delicious lobsters!

Portland

A 35 Mins drive of 28.5 Miles will take you to Maine’s largest city, Portland popular for its dining scene, shopping and the beautiful historic lighthouse, the Portland Head Light. Portland is a great choice for bikers & hikers as well.

Acadia National Park

The longest stretch of this route is towards Acadia National Park which is located 174 miles and takes about 2.50 hours. Halfway on the way to the National Park is the beautiful coastal town of Camden and its historic lighthouse Curtis Island Light.

Acadia National Park has a lot of great options for hikers, bikers, horseback riders and everyone who just want to have a good time. The small town of Bar Harbor is a little place to enjoy some delicious meals. It is a great idea to spend few days in the National Park considering the array of things to do.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Originally known as the Appalachian Scenic Highway, this 469-mile road was built back in the 1930s, during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. Its main purpose was to connect two of the country’s most beloved conservation areas– North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the most visited of all the U.S. National Parks) and Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park.

It’s arguably among the world’s greatest road trips, running right along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The protected land on either side of the road is owned by the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, so there’s not much in the way of development or commercialism to spoil the postcard-worthy views.

But that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to see and do along the way. Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone is home to around 10,000 species of plants & animals, including 1,600 black bears, elk, deer, and birds. There are majestic mountains and scenic hiking trails (including sections of the Appalachian Trail) virtually everywhere you turn, not to mention historic landmarks such as the Daniel Boone Native Gardens and the Hickory Ridge Homestead.

September and October are great times to visit, as the elk start to rut and the autumn colors begin to reach their peak. One trip to this unspoiled slice of Americana and you’ll understand immediately why the Blue Ridge Parkway has been the U.S. National Park System’s most visited attraction nearly every year since the mid-1940s.

Miami to Key West

Key West is the southernmost point of the United States, being just 90 miles away from Cuba. The distance to Miami is more than that, up to 125 miles, which means about 4 hours of driving without stopping.

I recommend that after leaving Miami, stop in Little Havana to get a taste of Cuba, but also in Coral Gables where are the most beautiful banyan trees and gorgeous villas. Then, you will cross 30 islands, the most famous being Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and The Lower Keys. You can stop in each of them to try out water sports or to delight yourself with traditional cuisine.

Also on this route, you will cross the famous Seven Mile Bridge which offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. I can say this is the highlight of this road trip. There are many attractions in Key West. So, I recommend you spend at least 3 days on the island.

My top activities involve walking on Duval Street and experiencing the nightlife, visiting Ernest Hemingway Home, Harry S. Truman Little White House, tanning on Smathers Beach, South Beach and Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.

When the Dalai Lama spoke his infamous words, “Once a year, go somewhere you have never been before,” I think it’s fair to say this resonates perfectly with those that LOVE road tripping around the world. I know that we certainly fall into this category and this is particularly true when thinking about the best way to explore the United States. From East to West and North to South, the US is home to a myriad of amazing road trips waiting to be experienced. Let’s start by taking a look at some of the best West coast USA road trips that we think need to be on your radar (if they are not already).

West Coast USA

What exactly determines the “West coast?” It’s all down to interpretation in my opinion! If we are taking these words at face value, we are likely looking at the iconic Pacific Highway in California or perhaps the breathtaking 17-mile drive along the Monterey Peninsula via Pebble Beach.

But what about if we expand this just a little (or a lot!) and start contemplating road trips that head inland? It’s true if you are willing to hit the open road, the Western United States is home to a plethora of breathtaking natural landscapes and lively urban environments. We decided to focus our attention on this wider geographic region, yet our focus primarily has each of the following road trips either starting or ending at a coastal destination.

We have been incredibly fortunate to experience some of the best road trips around the Western US states but rather than simply sharing our personal favorites, we opted to collaborate with some of our favorite travel blogging friends from across the globe and share this ultimate collection of EPIC road trips…that’s right, these are some of the best road trip itineraries not only in the US but anywhere in the world!

Best West Coast USA Road Trips

So…the million dollar question, which road trips actually made the cut when considering the BEST of the BEST around the West coast? It’s no surprise to see that there are some common destinations around several of these itineraries but the beauty of planning any road trip is that it’s entirely customizable. If you follow our top tip, you will always allow some time for spontaneity because that is what makes road trips so much fun.

Eastern Sierra Road Trip on I-395

A road trip on I-395 on the Eastern slope of the Sierras is not so well known for travelers visiting the golden state, but for those interested in visiting historic areas of old California, you’ll find some amazing western towns, the tallest mountain in California at Mt. Whitney to the lowest area in the USA at Death Valley National Park.

In between are unique places to visit like the Japanese internment camps at Manzanar, bizarre rock formations at Alabama Hills to some cool hot springs and a railroad museum in Bishop. Everything feels so western and authentic, almost like time stood still here in the Eastern Sierras.

San Franciso to San Diego

A road trip down the coast from San Francisco on the famous Highway No. 1 has to be one of the most popular trips on the Westcoast – for good reason! After spending some days exploring San Francisco with its unique sites such as the Golden Gate Bridge, make your way down the coast. Plan a stop at the amusement park on the beach in Santa Cruz and marvel at the stunning cliffs at Big Sur – the views are breath-taking!

Another nice stop along this route is the student and surfer city of Santa Barbara. Spend some time here before driving through Malibu and further into LA (with its infamous traffic, unfortunately!). Spend one or two days exploring the sights in LA such as Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the magical coastline featuring the likes of Santa Monica and Venice Beach.

While many people finish their journey in LA or head into the country towards Las Vegas or Grand Canyon from here, I highly recommend driving further south. The beach communities between LA and San Diego, such as Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach (famous from ‘The OC’) are beautiful and it’s a great experience to see all those mansions on the cliffs and the people enjoying their typical southern Californian lifestyle. Soon you’ll be in San Diego.

San Diego itself doesn’t have any world-famous attractions compared to LA but is much nicer, more relaxed and more beautiful with its surfer beaches and its Hispanic flair thanks to the proximity to the Mexican border. San Diego is the perfect ending of your California road trip and you should take a few days to relax on the beach or to try some surfing!

Los Angeles, CA to Paige, AZ

The American Southwest Road trip is so full of options it’s tough to narrow it down. There are so many hidden gems and beautiful canyons all concentrated into one area, you almost can’t go wrong no matter what you choose. Leaving from Zion and Bryce, don’t miss the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument for some amazing off the beaten path camping and hiking.

Most of the roads are unpaved and you can free camp almost anywhere within the area. There are arches, slot canyons, and loads of hikes to choose from. The drive from there through Moab and onwards to Arizona is incredible as well, including the Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, and of course, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona.

You’re also at the perfect jumping off point there for the Wave, White Pocket, and Lake Powell. It’s an outdoorsy person’s dream. The best time to visit is in the spring or fall when the weather is not too hot and not too cold. It’s a desert, after all!

Los Angeles to Southern Utah’s National Parks

California may be utterly spoiled for national parks, but sometimes you just need to experience something new. Enter: Southern Utah with its unparalleled natural beauty.

The Mighty Five parks hosted by Southern Utah are just a taste of what the area has to offer, and it’s the perfect distance from Los Angeles to make a road trip out of it! Not only will you get plenty of time to explore Southern Utah, but also experience the changing scenery as you move in closer to these famous parks.

Each of Utah’s National Parks hosts uniquely identifiable scenery that you won’t find outside of that individual park, and they are clustered so far together that you need to bring a trailer just to drag your dropped jaw behind your car! From Zion’s sheer crags to Bryce’s banded amphitheater of Hoodos to Arches’s, well, arches, you’ll never feel like you’re visiting the same place twice.

There’s also no need to stick to just the Mighty 5, even if they do get all of the attention. Within driving distance of the area, you can also easily reach Monument Valley, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon! While you could spend months (or even a lifetime) exploring this concentrated area of natural beauty, it’s easy to make the trip over 9 days during a week off.

Oregon Coast Road Trip

Driving along the Oregon coastline is one of the most iconic west coast road trips you can do. This spectacular section of Hwy 101 provides stunning scenes of incomparable natural beauty as well as the chance to stop and explore charming seaside towns, State Parks, and rugged coastline beaches.

If starting in the north of the state begin your road trip in historic Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rockies. From there, hug the coastline and head for Seaside, the home of Oregon’s first beach resort town. Not much further along is Cannon Beach, likely recognizable from the impressive sea stacks sitting majestically on the beach below.

The coastal highway continues for more than 360 miles passing so many quaint towns and points of interest that you could easily spend a week getting from Astoria to the California border.

Some of the many don’t miss highlights include Yaquina Head lighthouse, Indian Beach Trail, Tillamook Cheese Factory, Devil’s Punchbowl, Peter Iredale shipwreck and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Plus you won’t go thirsty or hungry with the many great seafood restaurants and craft breweries along the way.

For fresh seafood, stop in at one of the beloved Mo’s restaurants or have freshly caught crab cooked up right on the dock at Kelly’s Brighton Marina. If craft beer is your thing don’t miss a stop at the original Pelican Brewing Company pub where you can sit with your toes in the sand enjoying an ice cold beverage.

This west coast road trip is beautiful any time of year but, unlike Southern California, it’s not the type of coastline where you go to just lay on the beach or swim in the ocean. Weather is unpredictable along the Oregon coast but there are some general rules of thumb.

Winter is the best time for whale spotting and storm watching, spring is fresh and perfect for hiking, summer is the driest and sunniest time but also the busiest season and fall is often called “second summer” as the weather can be very pleasant and the crowds are mostly gone

San Francisco to Yosemite National Park

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our five-day/four-night road trip from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park to Napa Valley and back to San Francisco. At the time of our trip, our boys were two and four, and we enjoyed two lovely weekends in San Francisco visiting Muir Woods, the Golden Gate Bridge and Japanese Tea Gardens on either side of our road trip.

If you are lucky enjoy not to get stuck in traffic, Yosemite National Park is about a four-hour drive from San Francisco. Yosemite is known for its stunning granite cliffs, giant sequoia trees, and mountains and is easily one of the country’s most impressive national parks.

We spent two days exploring the park on easy hikes with unbelievable views of the iconic El Capitan and Half Dome. We weren’t lucky enough to travel during Spring, which is peak waterfall season but did see a trickle at Bridalveil Fall. Mariposa Grove features impressive giant sequoias.

Our next stop was Napa Valley, which is approximately four and a half hour away. We toured Sterling Vineyard, V. Sattui, Andretti Winery, Grgich Hills Estates and Beaulieu Vineyard during Fall harvest. Finally, we returned to San Francisco, about one and a half hours (again, assuming no traffic). We recommend this road trip because it features amazing views, beautiful nature and great wine.

Las Vegas to Northern Arizona

One of the best American road trips there is the American Southwest – and my personal favorite portion of the trip is between Las Vegas and Northern Arizona. It’s less crowded than Utah’s many national parks, with gorgeous landscapes and a huge variety of things to do. I recommend starting your route in Las Vegas because the car rentals in Vegas are much cheaper than in neighboring states.

Be sure not to miss the Valley of Fire State Park, with the gorgeous red rocks that have made it a popular stand-in for Mars in movies such as Total Recall. After the Valley of Fire, head over to the Hoover Dam, to see what used to be the tallest dam of all time

After Hoover Dam, head towards Flagstaff, Arizona, which is a perfect gateway to other places in Arizona. You obviously can’t miss the Grand Canyon, one of America’s most iconic landmarks. The deepest canyon in the world, this canyon is more impressive than you could have ever imagined. You can also make a side trip to Sedona, with its red rocks, hippie restaurants, and stunning hikes.

After exploring the area around Flagstaff, head north towards Page, Arizona. There, you’ll find Antelope Canyon, one of the most stunning slot canyons. Located on Navajo Nation land (LeChee Chapter), you can only visit with a permit and guided tour – and it’s worth every penny. It is quite crowded, though, so be prepared for that.

While in Page, you also shouldn’t miss Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River takes a hairpin turn from a scenic lookout point. It’s located just a few miles outside of town and is a short 15-minute walk from the parking lot. I also recommend visiting the gorgeous Lake Powell or viewing it from one of the scenic lookout points like Wahweap Overlook.

Summary

Breathtaking…this word alone doesn’t give the west coast of USA enough justice but that’s truly what it’s like when you see the myriad of spectacular scenery awaiting you on your next adventure out west. Whether you are intrigued by the urban skylines of San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego or simply prefer to head further inland to explore the Mighty 5 National Parks of Utah, you can be sure that the west coast offers a diverse blend of options that will surely entice you into a road trip.

Road tripping is our favorite way of exploring the United States. Why? Because of the above itineraries and photos that immediately epitomize the beauty throughout this part of America. Hit the open road folks and let spontaneity take over because there is an incredible overlook or scene right around the corner.

Whether you are an aspiring actor looking for fame in the next Hollywood blockbuster or simply a traveling tourist ready to admire a location that has become synonymous with the world’s iconic stars, Hollywood, California is one of those places that you are likely to have a love-hate relationship with. I am going to start by saying we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the heart of “Tinseltown” and look forward to returning again in the future. If you are intrigued to find out the best things to do in Hollywood, keep reading!

Visitors to Hollywood will either immediately fall in love with the stardom associated with this place or perhaps wonder how on earth this location become such a popular hotspot for the world’s leading stars. To quote Kevin Bacon, “Hollywood is more of an idea than a place” and although there may be some truth behind this, it’s one of those iconic US destinations that you simply have to visit at least once in your lifetime.

From the best place to stay in Hollywood to all the best attractions along Hollywood Boulevard (and of course, the iconic Hollywood sign!), we are going to share the ideal itinerary to spending 48 hours in this part of Los Angeles. If you are flying into LAX, we strongly recommend experiencing this part of the metropolis.

Location, Location, Location

If you are looking for a luxury, boutique accommodation option while exploring “Tinseltown,” Hollywood Hotel is undoubtedly the perfect choice. We always hear about “location, location, location” when it comes to properties and it’s fair to say this is the ideal spot to explore the very best of Hollywood.

Anyone visiting Los Angeles for the first time will quickly realize that having a car is a hindrance rather than a benefit. If you choose to rent a car, here is our tip…head to the Hollywood Hotel, park your vehicle and leave it there while you explore the best of the city!

Take a 2-minute stroll across the street to the metro station, grab a one day (or multi-day if you are staying in the Los Angeles area for several days) pass for only $7 (that’s right, only $7 for UNLIMITED use throughout the day!!) and start exploring. From Hollywood to Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles, the Metro is by far the best way to get around the city and surrounding neighborhoods.

We have experienced public transportation in New York City, London, Paris, and Singapore but I think LA is definitely up there with some of the best around in terms of convenience, accessibility, ease of use and of course, price!

Relax in Luxurious Heaven

Meanwhile, when you head back to the hotel after a long day wandering around Hollywood, there will be a perfect environment awaiting you to enjoy a relaxing evening.

When I read that the Hollywood Hotel offered “contemporary accommodations” combined with “quintessential Hollywood glamour,” I knew that we were heading to the perfect place.

The courtyard in the heart of the hotel epitomizes the archetypal boutique establishment that is perfect for the Hollywood style we associate with the likes of Marilyn Monroe et al.

Grab your favorite book and head outside to enjoy a relaxing ambiance as your thoughts drift away to contemplating life as a movie star back in the 1950s or 60s in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Hotel offers a distinctive range of guest rooms and suites to suit everyone’s needs.

For those that prefer a more spacious option, consider the Junior Suite or Jacuzzi Suite, both of which offer something a little more in terms of luxury in comparison to the standard guest rooms. Don’t let this fool you though, the Luminary King guest room is where we stayed for two nights and was everything we could have wished for and more!

You can’t help but fall in love with these rooms and the hardest part of any stay at the Hollywood Hotel will be actually getting up in the morning because the beds are incredibly comfortable.

Amenities inside the room include a 37″ LCD TV, coffee/tea maker, microwave and of course, the pièce de résistance, stylish “his and hers” bathrobes with the Hollywood Hotel embossed on them!

Exceptional Cuisine

Can you think of any better way to start the day than with a hearty breakfast? The complimentary breakfast buffet offers an eclectic blend of hot and cold delicacies, all of which combine to satisfy your appetite before heading out to explore everything Hollywood has to offer.

Consider creating your very own customized omelet by the local chef or perhaps indulge in the variety of cold meats, cheese, and pastry items. Regardless of what you choose, you can be sure that you won’t leave hungry!

Directly across from the breakfast area is Route 66 Bar and Lounge which is the perfect environment to mingle with friends and family while enjoying an aperitif or two.

Be sure to check the schedule before your visit because you never know what live entertainment may be arranged inside the bar. You can also look forward to a daily “happy hour” between 5 PM and 7 PM either inside the bar or at the outdoor bar in the courtyard.

Things to Do in Hollywood

There is an undeniable appeal to Hollywood as you stroll along the Boulevard and hope to see one of your favorite movie stars. Sorry to dent your hopes folks but it’s highly unlikely unless you are planning a visit to a major movie premiere or awards ceremony at the infamous Dolby Theatre.

Ok, enough of the negativity…don’t let the potential (or lack of) of seeing a movie star prevent you from exploring the best of Hollywood.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Take a stroll around the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame and try and find your favorite movie star. A word of caution, it may take a while because there are 2,600 stars (as of the time of this post being published in 2018) scattered around Hollywood!

But this is certainly one of the coolest experiences because you never know which Hollywood “star” you will step on next. Who is your favorite movie star, musician or TV personality?

The Walk of Fame stretches 1.3 miles from east to west along Hollywood Boulevard, from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue along with 0.4 miles north to south on Vine Street between Yucca Street and Sunset Boulevard.

I think it’s fair to say that you could easily spend a couple of hours exploring this iconic “walk” to try and find your favorite stars but with so many other things to do in Hollywood, simply spotting a few of your favorites will likely be sufficient.

I haven’t figured out if there is any real structure or strategic organization to the Walk of Fame but there are several spots, such as in front of the Dolby Theater where many iconic stars can be found while other areas have less well-known individuals.

Did you know that it costs $40,000 to have a star on the Walk of Fame? Realistically, this amount isn’t going to break the banks of many of the folks on this stretch of sidewalk but it’s still a hefty amount when you see these in person.

Hollywood Sign

When it comes to iconic symbols around the world, the Hollywood Sign is certainly one of those that most folks recognize, regardless of your desire to visit this location. It’s definitely more than just 9 letters that spell out the city’s name, rather it’s a symbolic “metaphor for ambition, success, and glamour.”

Unlike many symbolic attractions around the world, the Hollywood Sign is actually pretty challenging to visit. It’s not one of those places that you can see from everywhere or from any angle and to hike the Santa Monica Mountains in the Hollywood Hills area is far from easy, particularly given that much of the surrounding area is private property. But don’t let this challenge stop you from trying to catch a peek at this iconic spot.

For those of you that don’t want to pay exorbitant fees to take a guided tour of the Hollywood Sign or simply don’t want to go to the effort of hiking around the Hollywood neighborhood to get an up close and personal viewpoint, there are several viewing spots around that are well worth visiting.

Our favorite spot is at the Hollywood and Highland Mall, a shopping and entertainment complex located along Hollywood Boulevard that offers an excellent viewing platform to admire the sign. Admittedly, you are a fair distance from the sign and it would serve you well to have a pretty solid telephoto zoom lens to capture cool shots but this is definitely a great, “easy” option.

What you won’t really appreciate from the viewing platform at the mall is the size and magnitude of this sign. The word “Hollywood” is spelled out in 44-foot tall capital letters and date back to 1923 when this sign was first constructed.

TCL Chinese Theatre

One of the coolest experiences around Hollywood is to visit the TCL Chinese Theatre to check out the collection of hand and footprints of famous movie stars that once stood there.

Although the thought of visiting a location simply to see a bunch of hand/footprints may be a little crazy, the moment you arrive here you will be star-struck and immediately will be comparing your hands and feet with your favorite stars.

The TCL Chinese Theatre is renowned as one of Hollywood’s most beautiful and well-preserved theatres from the “Golden Era.” Both the exterior and interior are impressive and certainly fit the overall grand style of the Hollywood culture.

As you admire some of the prints left by your favorite movie stars, you can’t help but notice many comments referencing a certain “Sid.” This is referring to Sid Grauman, the original creator of the Grauman Chinese Theatre.

We have highlighted just a few of the best things to do around Hollywood but with the Griffith Observatory, Sunset Ranch Hollywood, several museums and of course, a plethora of shops to keep you occupied for days, there is plenty more to see and experience.

Summary

Welcome to Hollywood! The beauty of visiting this area of Los Angeles is that it provides a unique neighborhood unlike anywhere else in the world. We highly recommend everyone checking out Hollywood and staying at the iconic “Hollywood Hotel,” as this not only gives you the perfect opportunity to explore this neighborhood, the ease of access to the LA Metro line allows you the chance to experience many other areas of the city.

If you are planning a visit to Hollywood, I want to emphasize that taking public transportation or walking is the best way to get around. Not only is traffic crazy but parking can be difficult and extremely expensive. Neighborhoods such as Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Beverly Hills and downtown LA are all easily accessible from Hollywood.

Can you think of anything better than taking a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame and finding your favorite actors’ stars? It’s a pretty surreal experience to know that you are walking along a street where so many famous people have stood to commemorate their star. Perhaps you will be the next aspiring star to get your name printed on Hollywood Boulevard!
