Dream Destinations – Bora Bora

The ultimate spot for relaxation around the world has to be Bora Bora located in the heart of French Polynesia. Of course, visiting this part of the world is incredibly expensive due to it’s luxurious stereotype and without doubt it clearly lives up to its expectations and reputation.

Here are my top 5 reasons that you have to splurge for this once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the gorgeous island of Bora Bora.

Over-Water Huts

Four Seasons

If you don’t think those over-water bungalows look cool, then maybe Bora Bora isn’t for you but I think you would hard pressed to find anything else around the world that is as relaxing as this! I can just imagine laying in bed in one of these villas listening to the waves surrounding you and then being able to walk out of your bedroom door and dive into the ocean – pretty cool right! The above shot is taken from the Four Seasons Bora Bora resort.

Bora Bora Photo Lagoon

photo_lagoon

The ultimate romantic spot in Bora Bora is also a photographers dream. Set in the heart of French Polynesia, this discovery excursion will help reveal the secrets of what made this lagoon so fabulous. A great way to see the local coral reefs and ocean life whilst at the same time capturing some amazing shots with your loved one.

Mount Otemanu

mount_otemanu

Mount Otemanu is the highest point on Bora Bora and partners with Mt. Pahia to form an extinct volcano that is now a truly beautiful part of the skyline surrounding the gorgeous ocean landscape. A haven for wildlife and a photographers paradise especially if interested in birdlife, this looks to be a perfect spot to get out those hiking boots and go exploring in the wilderness.

Local Cuisine

cuisine

So many different cuisines to sample at the gorgeous hotels and resorts but surely the desserts are the most appealing when you see images such as the macaroon above!

Bora Bora Hotels

Four Seasons Bora Bora 2

There are so many amazing hotels to choose from in Bora Bora but they all have one thing in common – awesome swimming pools or ocean access! Imagine relaxing by the pool and then crashing under one of those canopies before sampling one of the delicious desserts. The more you think about this part of the world, the more you realize this is somewhere you have to go to just recharge your batteries and indulge in this natural beauty.

Dream Destinations – Argentina

What’s the first thing you think about when you hear the word Argentina? Well, unless you are a seasoned traveler you may be struggling to think about something unless you go with something like Evita or Diego Maradona.

I can honestly admit that I felt exactly this way before doing a little research on this beautiful country. Sure, I knew that Buenos Aires is the capital but I wanted to find out much more about what this South American gem has to offer.

Here are my top 5 recommended things that I would love to see when exploring Argentina.

Iguazu Falls

iguazu

Just look at the sight of the Iguazu Falls! Visible from both Argentina and Brazil, this is one attraction that I would to visit to take some awesome pictures. I know that Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls are probably covered more in the media but looking at pictures alone of Iguazu surely has to put this into the same category as those two. I will save my final judgement until I am able to visit these spectacular falls for myself.

Glaciar Perito Moreno

Glaciar Perito Moreno

Located at the southern tip of South America in the Los Glaciares National Park, the Glaciar Perito Moreno is one of only three Patagonian glaciers still growing. An impressive tourist attraction that attracts visitors from around the world, hiking around this glacier is certainly an appealing attraction when visiting Argentina.

Quebrada de Humahuaca

The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a valley situated in the spectacular valley of the Rio Grande. A beautiful, yet rugged landscape, this valley provides a great opportunity for backpackers to explore the apparent unknown as they wander through local villages, meeting new folks along the way and learning about a hidden culture in the Camino Inca.

Plaza de Mayo – Buenos Aires

Plaza de Mayo

Plaza de Mayo is the main square in central Buenos Aires. Hosting a series of historic landmarks and architectural genius, this square plays host to locals and tourists alike as a relaxing central point to explore the rest of the Argentinian capital.

La Boca – Buenos Aires

La Boca

La Boca is another neighborhood in Buenos Aires that has a particularly unique feel to it with the very colorful building fronts highlighting this part of Argentina. A very European flavor is present here with many Italians finding this as a perfect locale to settle. A hot spot for tourists because of the colorful housing and streets but also because this is a stereotypical hub for Argentinian tango dancers to practice their moves.

Pocket App – Product Review

Have you ever wanted to read articles at a later time? Have you ever forgot about an article? How many of you have been traveling and found yourself without reading material?

Look no further than a great new app that I just came across – Pocket, the most convenient way to save media and review later. A cool feature is there is no need for internet connection when viewing articles through Pocket. It seems that I am always wanting to do research or read articles when I have no access to internet. The best part is this app is FREE!!

Screen Shot 2014-03-27 at 9.08.43 PM

I downloaded Pocket a few days ago and already I am a firm believer that this could be a life-saver on your travels. I have downloaded Pocket on my web browser to be able to save directly from the internet (a real simple process to add the icon to your Safari browser for Mac users). They also have an option to e-mail articles, I have a couple of contacts that send me articles and I can forward that article to Pocket and it will download directly to my reading list.

I have been really bad about buying a magazine and forgetting to bring it with me on trips, however with Pocket you can access the app across all mobile devices and not just iOS. This makes life so much easier and with magazines now having digital copies I can now start saving trees which of course is what we are all trying to achieve right?

These are some additional images from Pocket:

Screen Shot 2014-03-27 at 9.08.22 PM

I would strongly suggest downloading Pocket, within 4 days this has helped me get more organized and catch-up on our fellow travel bloggers!! If you are interested in downloading this app, you can find this on the iTunes site here.

The A to Z Challenge 2014

Last year I was introduced to this great idea about producing a quality blog post every day for a month throughout April. Unfortunately I was a little late to ‘officially’ enter us into the 2013 challenge but no fear, 2014 is different! I am pleased to announce that A Brit and A Southerner is officially registered for the 2014 A to Z Challenge.

a-to-z HEADER [2014] - april

The Challenge

Can you post every day except Sundays during the month of April 2014?  If you can achieve this let’s add another notch of difficulty to the challenge, can you blog thematically from A to Z throughout this month? If you think the answer to both of these questions is yes, then go for it!!

At first the thought of creating a new article every day for a month probably seems pretty simple. Well, after last year’s experience I can honestly say it’s much harder than you would initially imagine.

How do I intend on doing a better job this year? One simple word – PLANNING! I think to make this challenge less stressful, you have to plan and prepare in advance and ‘hopefully’ I will do a much better job at achieving this. They always say you learn from your mistakes and experiences, well only time will tell.

Our Theme

So after deciding to sign up for this year’s 2014 A to Z Challenge, yes we were pretty early this year to ensure we signed up in time #194 on the list. By the way, if you are interested in signing up for this challenge, you can view every other participant here and join up yourself – SIGN UP HERE.

***The A to Z Challenge Begins on April 1st 2014***

48 Hours in Minneapolis

One of our favorite pastimes seems to be taking weekend trips to new destinations. When you are working from 8-5, the reality is that you have no other option if you want to truly maximize your opportunities of traveling around the world. On our recent trip to Minnesota, we experienced an amazing 48 hours in Minneapolis proving that you can have a great time in such a short timeframe.

The positives that come out of this are you don’t need to take any vacation time away from work, plus you see just enough in a short space of time that will encourage you to go back again in the future to explore more!

DSC_0004

We were even fortunate enough to knock two more states off our visited list which now takes us to 24, still a long way to go but at least we are heading in the right direction. Minneapolis, Minnesota, AKA the Twin Cities, is a great city to explore and also cross the border into Wisconsin to sample some of their delectable cheese.

Flying into Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, we stayed overnight at the Quality Inn and Suites next to the airport before rising early Saturday morning to begin our exploration of the city! Here are some of our adventures we experienced during a crazy 48 hours.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

After requesting recommendations on our Facebook page of where to go, we were strongly urged to visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden located near downtown primarily for the magnificent views and excellent art designs. Not knowing what to expect, we went  here with an open mind and left pleasantly surprised. Of course, visiting Minneapolis at this time of the year is not the best time to go for wandering around, with ice and snow covering most areas, however the sidewalk was clear around the perimeter of the gardens.

IMG_0037

We saw several pieces that appeared to be particularly intriguing and lured you in for a closer look! However, walking in closer meant you had to go ‘off the beaten path’, heading into the soft snow which inevitably saw us sink to our knees on several occasions (very memorable experience with lots of laughing – one of those ‘you have to be there’ moments!)

Seeing the spoon with the cheery took me back to my Art History background and for some reason it made me think about Andy Warhol, the snow reflecting the sun and several different angles from the sculpture enabling us to capture unique images of the iconic structure.

DSC_0010

DSC_0025

St. Mary’s Basilica

What a gorgeous piece of architecture the St. Mary’s Basilica is! If you have any interest in seeing cathedrals and churches, then put this iconic structure high on your priority list of must-sees because this is certainly impressive. Though we didn’t see the interior, just exploring the towering structure from the outside is enough to see how much history is present here.

It didn’t surprise me to see a couple shooting their engagement pictures outside on the front steps leading up to the entrance of this cathedral – it really has that aura about it.

DSC_0058

The Mall of America

Excitement, Endurance and Exhaustion! Those three words pretty much sum up the feelings we had throughout our Saturday afternoon experience at the Mall of America, also in that order. Heading to the biggest mall in America, there is that sense of excitement with a hint of trepidation as you really don’t know what to expect.

malloutside

Hearing of over 400 stores which is at least double what you normally expect within most malls, you just can’t fathom whether it is realistic to see all of this inside one day. Prior to heading to Minneapolis, knowing that we only had a weekend here, we pretty much imagined that we would be spending the majority of time within the confines of this mall.

IMG_4700

The reality wasn’t far from our assumptions, though we managed to explore the majority of the mall inside a 6 hour span! Arriving at lunch time, we decided to get something to eat so after parking on the top floor of the six level parking garage we headed to the third (top) floor of the Mall of America and ate at Buffalo Wild Wings. Entering the mall you immediately grasped a real sense of the size of this place – massive is an understatement!

mallofamerica

Sat in an area of almost 5 million square feet, this mall could house 7 Yankees Stadiums just to put the size into context. Three levels containing every genre of shop you could imagine, a food court offering a vast array of cuisine options and the ultimate attraction – Nickelodeon Universe theme park sat right in the heart of the mall on the first level! Yes, that’s right there are numerous theme park rides flowing throughout the mall.

This place is huge and of course with all these amazing attractions, plays host to millions of tourists and locals every year! In terms of a popularity contest, this place certainly delivers.

Hudson, Wisconsin

Heading to Minnesota, we decided this would be a great opportunity to knock off Wisconsin from our list of US states we have visited. Looking at the map, we noticed that Eau Claire, WI was not too far but given our time constraints we opted for the small town of Hudson which is just across the St. Croix River. The first thing worth noting here is that the river was pretty much completely frozen, probably a common occurrence in this part of the country, but for us it was a strange sight yet provided impressive photo moments.

IMG_0078

With a population of a little over 8000, you can probably tell what type of town we are talking about here. Added to this we visited here early on a Sunday morning and there wasn’t much going on apart from a few locals preparing to head to church and others wandering to the local cafe for breakfast.

Apart from that, the town was dead but there was a really cool riverfront walk that was at least worth getting out and exploring for a while, despite the bitter 12 degrees temperature that we encountered. Fighting the frigid temperatures, we were still able to explore the ‘beach’ which was a little strange given it was covered in snow and the river was completely frozen – weird right?

IMG_0075

Stillwater, Minnesota

Returning to Minnesota, we visited Stillwater which was another small town but offered much more in terms of character. Located on the limestone banks on the other side of the St. Croix River from Hudson, WI, this is a great little town to explore especially if you want to improve your fitness levels.

IMG_0109

There are numerous staircases throughout the little town that take you to the top of the town overlooking the surrounding area. We climbed the 157 steps of the South Main Street staircase and it is certainly worth the challenge for the amazing views once at the summit.

Kelty Women’s Lorraine Backpack – Product Review

When we started traveling I carried my luggage and my handbag, but I quickly figured out that it was hard for me to fit my Macbook, Camera and other personal items all in one bag. I discovered the Kelty (Women’s Lorraine) Backpack and immediately knew I had found something that would fit my needs!

At first I was a little apprehensive but I grew fond of the idea of toting my backpack everywhere rather than struggling with either my handbag or camera bag. With just enough compartments and the fact that this easily stows under the seat on the plane, this backpack is a great fit for me. The vendor carries a variety of different styles, both in terms of size and color schemes to meet any of your needs. I am confident that any of the Kelty backpacks will suit you and would strongly urge you to consider this brand when searching for a new travel companion.

753_1_black

This backpack provides sufficient interior space for a weekend getaway or even longer trip. It allows travelers to stylishly blend into any environment and I am adamant that this backpack will soon become your favorite travel companion.

Complete with a TSA-ready laptop/tablet sleeve helps you quickly pass through airport security, there is also a handy exterior pocket that allows you to store an extra jacket or bike helmet that are readily available rather than having to dig through all those deep backpack pockets that you normally associate with them! It is made from a very durable polyester blend that makes this backpack the ultimate travel accessory for anyone planning on purchasing one in the near future .

The Pros

  • TSA-approved laptop sleeve
  • Fleece-lined media pocket
  • Organizer panel
  • Side Compression Straps
  • Dual water bottle pockets
  • Helmet carry
  • Extremely lightweight

The Cons

  • There is nothing wrong with this product

Conclusion

Whenever you are looking for a backpack of any sort several things come to mind: Price, Durability, and Functionality. This company is dedicated to travel needs and stands by the product. At first glance the bag may not be fashionable for some however the purpose that it serves is to create a lightweight bag that travelers can carry all of the essentials plus more easily and this backpack meets all of my needs and I hope you will give them a try. For the full range of Kelty products, check out their website here.

Hyatt Place, Minneapolis – Hotel Review

During our recent weekend trip to Minneapolis, we opted to stay at the Hyatt Place Minneapolis/Eden Prairie hotel. We have stayed at several Hyatt Place’s previously, so had a good idea of what to expect from this hotel chain.

20140318-105944.jpg

Location

Located in close proximity to the interstate, this hotel is perfect if you rent a vehicle and want to explore the Minneapolis and St. Paul region. However, given it’s apparent distance from downtown Minneapolis and also the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, you would be well advised to consider if this Hyatt Place will meet your needs or not.

Room

Hyatt Place

One of the primary benefits of staying at a Hyatt Place is that all of the rooms are suites, so you are presented with a good sized accommodation with living quarters separated from the sleeping arrangements. Our room offered a good size living room with a small kitchenette and small study area whilst past the partitioned wall was a king sized bed, vanity and bathroom containing a walk-in shower. We had no complaints at all with the room quality and everything was very well manicured and clearly well maintained.

20140318-110028.jpg

Amenities

In-Room

  • Free Wi-Fi – Obviously a key aspect of any in-room service at a hotel. Although we didn’t use the internet very much, the connection was smooth and provided good speed which is honestly all you can ask for.
  • 42″ TV – A good sized TV along with a variety of cable channels available. I know that a TV is not necessarily a primary amenity within a hotel room, but it’s always nice to have one available especially with such a vast range of channels at your disposal.

Hotel

  • Free Parking – Excellent parking facilities outside the hotel. We were fortunate to find a spot directly in front of the hotel lobby area but even without this there are plenty of excellent parking options available within short walking distance of the hotel entrance.
  • Swimming Pool
  • Fitness Center – 24 hour access available

Dining

The Hyatt Place offers an excellent, complimentary breakfast with a wide range of cuisine options available. If you would like a hot breakfast, eggs, sausage and toast and readily available whilst if you prefer a lighter option, fruit, bagels and cereal are on offer.

In addition to the complimentary options, there is a selection of specialty Starbucks options available from the bar which also offers late night beverages and a 24/7 dining menu.

Summary and Details

Our experience at the Hyatt Place Minneapolis/Eden Prairie hotel was nothing but positive! I know we are doing hotel reviews in the hope of providing constructive criticism but we honestly found nothing to report with a negative connotation. Everything from the moment we checked in to us leaving the hotel Sunday morning was smooth, efficient and a pleasurable experience. I can only hope that every other hotel that we stay at in the future follows suit. I think the best aspect of this hotel is the price. For $75 you would generally expect a mid-range hotel chain, but the reality is the Hyatt Place have a really competitive price point which gives them an advantage over their rivals because the look and feel of the hotel has a more ‘luxury’ appeal to it!

Dates: Saturday, March 15, 2014 – Sunday, March 16, 2014 (1 Night)

Price: $75 per night

What is your favorite aspect of traveling and if you are a travel blogger, why did you decide to create your website?

What I like about traveling is experiencing new things everyday, also the unexpected. And experience for me means learning, since I believe in learning by doing. If you have a normal office job, the most enthusiastic thing it can happen is probably getting an extra free day. If you take possession of your life and you go travelling, you open a completely new range of possibilities. You feel alive every second, and you are not looking forward for weekends. Your life is a weekend.

I started my travel website to share this vision with other people, to try to inspire them and possibly to change a little bit of the world in which we live. Whatever I do, I always think that if it’s even 1% better than when I started, it means I succeeded.

How many continents have you visited?

Three

How many countries have you visited?

30+

What is your favorite destination in the world and why?

It’s probably Nepal. First of all, it came after some very stressing months in India, where I was even hospitalized for one week. I keep great memories from Nepal and its people, because they are Asian but with a stronger Western influence, so it was easier to get along with them. I found it to be a much more relaxing, spontaneous and friendly than India. But most of all I loved trekking in the Himalaya for three weeks, covering over 300 km and reaching 5500 meters of altitude, making good friends, and passing from tropical climate to alpine forest to bare rocks, while I was hiking.

If money/time was no object and you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you travel to and why?

No doubts it would be Bhutan. It’s a different world there, economics have no place in the important choices of the state, and people are happy with what they have. They develop happiness rather than their bank accounts. Nature is amazing and you can recharge your spiritual batteries just by staying there. Unfortunately to preserve their unique culture they limited the entrance of foreigners, and having access to this Himalayan country is difficult and extremely expensive.

Which of the following gadgets do you take on your travels?

Laptop, Phone, Camera and e-Reader.

What is your preferred method of transport?

Bicycle.

Complete the following, “Everywhere I go, I visit….”

Natural beauties in the surroundings and inspiring architectures, in particular Art Nouveau buildings.

Here is your chance to sell yourself and your website! Tell us some more information about yourself, what your travel philosophies & future plans are and anything else that people may find interesting to read about…

Since two years and a half, my solo travel transformed into a couple travel, since I met my better half Otilia. Of course while travelling! We were rock climbing in Hungary when we met for the fist time. Now we try to travel sustainably, moving almost exclusively by land, most of the time hitchhiking. I love cycling, but she is still not enough comfortable to travel by bike. We don’t use hotels, we always sleep couchsurfing and we eat local and vegetarian. We buy second hand clothes, and only if we need, and we try to inspire people to be more frugal. In our website, we share our travel stories, photos and plenty of tips.

I’m also really interested in photography, I’ve collaborated with international paperback magazines and our articles are always filled with nice images. Now we are waiting for an answer from the Indonesian Embassy. If we’ll be selected for a program we applied for, we’ll study local handicraft in Indonesia for one year. We can’t wait to go!

A Drive in the Yorkshire Dales

Winter in England usually consists of wet, murky days with very little daylight hours. In other words, not conducive to visitors wanting to wander around the English countryside especially if they are not prepared with appropriate clothing and hiking gear. However, I have a little something just for you that will hopefully reinvigorate your desires to head to the northern part of England if you venture here during those dreary Winter months.

First thing that you will need is a rental car. Ok, don’t be scared, driving in England really isn’t all that bad! So, you think you have that down well head on over to the Yorkshire Dales for your very own roller coaster ride but without the theme park. You may have read some of our other Yorkshire based posts including the market town of Skipton and idyllic village of Haworth. Well, this scenic drive in the Yorkshire Dales starts out at Skipton and can take anywhere from 3 hours to a full day, dependent on what you want to see and do in between, and ends at the same place you started!

The Route

Yorkshire Dales Drive

Start: Skipton, North Yorkshire

What better way to start this drive around the Yorkshire Dales than a quick visit to the local daily market in Skipton.

DSC_0235

Skipton to Grassington

Distance: 10 miles (20 minutes)

Venturing north from Skipton, you will immediately head into beautiful countryside, surrounded by miles and miles of farmland. Be prepared to slow down as you drive around these country roads as sharp bends are always round the corner!

Grassington is only about 20 minutes from Skipton though despite being a similar civil market town, it lacks the attractions on offer to realistically make this a hot tourist location in Yorkshire. However, it does provide a great hub for hikers to park up and then head out into the Yorkshire Moors exploring the miles and miles of wilderness out there.

Grassington to Pateley Bridge

Distance: 11 miles (22 minutes)

After a quick pit stop in Grassington, head East on the B6265 towards Pateley Bridge. Here is where you will really begin to see some changes in elevation as you climb through the Nidderdale Valley. This part of Yorkshire is gorgeous and on a nice day you can see the Yorkshire Dales for miles around.

Pateley Bridge to Ripon

Distance: 11 miles (20 minutes)

Driving from Pateley Bridge to Ripon, you can take in the beautiful Brimham Rocks which is an amazing collection of weird and wonderful natural rock formations in North Yorkshire, managed by the National Trust. The main attraction in Ripon has to be the historic Cathedral that has been around for many centuries. An architectural masterpiece, Ripon Cathedral offers North Yorkshire a vibrant hub for the local community and surrounding region to explore their Christian faith.

Ripon to Knaresborough

Distance: 11 miles (22 minutes)

As you move away from the rural communities of the North Yorkshire Moors, you head south to the town of Knaresborough which is infamously known in the area as being home of Mother Shipton’s Cave. What is this famous for? Well, legend has it that the prophetess ‘Mother Shipton’ was actually born in this cave, how much truth there is to this I don’t really know but the overall experience is really cool. Added to this is a petrifying well which has been host to tourists for many centuries given its relationship with Shipton.

DSC_0379

Knaresborough to Harrogate

Distance: 4 miles (10 minutes)

The drive over to Harrogate is short and sweet and you will immediately realize you are back in a more urban setting. However, Harrogate is still a high profile Yorkshire tourist destination as it is home to beautiful botanical gardens and historical buildings that attract tourists on a regular basis.

Victoria Centre

Beautiful Botanical Gardens

Harrogate War Memorial

Harrogate to Skipon

Distance: 21 miles (33 minutes)

The drive back from Harrogate to Skipton was unfortunately in the dark but it primarily consists of heading back across the Yorkshire Moors with potentially beautiful scenery if you are there during the daytime.

Overall Summary

This is a really interesting drive and certainly a great way to spend an afternoon especially in Winter if the weather is not good enough to be walking around. Dependent on your interests, you could spend more time at each of the locations but it is all down to personal preference. Driving around the Yorkshire Dales is gorgeous, the sense of relaxation is there immediately as you enter into the rural countryside. The archaic stone walls that line the farmland is just a stereotypical British design that sets the scene perfectly.

What better way to spend an afternoon that by meandering around the British countryside in the heart of Yorkshire?
