Top 5 Memphis Neighborhoods You Need to Know About

Do you ever visit a city and feel like you have to explore ‘off the beaten path’ to really experience what the destination has to offer? This is exactly how we like to travel but sometimes it is difficult to find these hidden gems, especially when you have time constraints and want to experience everything the city has to offer.

From Graceland to Beale Street, Memphis is home to a vast array of diverse landscapes and of course these iconic attractions. But something inside us suggested there was more to Memphis than all of this…We wanted to find those hidden Memphis neighborhoods that truly represent the city of rock and roll.

We have made the short drive from Arkansas across the Mississippi River to Memphis on a number of occasions but we recently decided to spend a full weekend here and try to find some of these hidden locations. Hopefully this guide will provide a few examples of places you can visit in the gorgeous haven that is referred to as ‘Bluff City’.

South Main Arts District

Let’s start downtown Memphis with the South Main Arts district. After experiencing the iconic Beale Street, why not head down Main Street beyond the Orpheum Theater until you reach a gorgeous part of the city that oozes regeneration. This part of Memphis was the hub for the railroad industry due to Central Station being located in the heart of this district.

However, despite the declining rail industry, the overall theme of this area switched to a more vibrant arts community though not without years of decline in between. It was only in the 1980s that many new businesses, art galleries and restaurants moved back into South Main to regenerate this area.

If you are interested in learning more about the rail industry that once thrived here, head over to the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum.

memphis blues hall of fame

The artistic presence makes this a perfect location for any budding artists, and the local River Arts Fest that takes place every year allows local aspirers the opportunity to showcase their best work.

Although this is one of the quieter neighborhoods in Memphis, it offers a relaxing atmosphere especially as you stroll along South Main and watch the local trolley meander its way along this street.

I highly encourage you to take a moment to visit Bluff City Coffee shop to sample one of their fruit smoothies or signature espresso drinks. The raspberry smoothie was unbelievable but whatever you opt for, I am convinced you won’t be disappointed.

Or maybe you need something with a little more substance, so head on over to the Arcade Restaurant which offers a little bit of nostalgia as you enjoy a home cooked meal.

But the most iconic landmark that is located just off South Main on Mulberry Street is the National Civil Rights Museum. The Lorraine Motel, site of MLK’s tragic assassination in 1968 is now a popular spot for visitors and well worth spending some time to learn about MLK’s influence on society.

Cooper-Young District

If South Main is home to the artsy communities in Memphis, Cooper-Young is an eclectic neighborhood where history, culture and fine cuisine come together and create a melting pot of all the above. After exploring the downtown district, we headed to Midtown and the intersection of Cooper and Young which is a great spot for fine dining and learning all about the history of Memphis.

cooper young neighborhood memphis

A trip to the Cooper-Young neighborhood wouldn’t be the same without exploring Burke’s Book Store on Cooper Street. Dating back to 1875, this quaint and idyllic book store is a great place to find a rare novel or perhaps even a first edition that may be worth a buck or two.

What better way to spend a Saturday morning than strolling through the various aisles in search of that hidden gem while exploring this off the beaten path neighborhood.

As we stood at the intersection between Cooper and Young, I was left a little perplexed at the varying cultures that are apparent here. From the trendy and cosmopolitan restaurants to the deep history inside the walls of Burke’s Book Store, it immediately struck me that Cooper-Young is a little bit of everything!

And that’s why this is such an awesome district to explore while visiting Memphis.

Looking for a bite to eat in Cooper-Young? Don’t worry, this is the place to be for diverse restaurant selections! I was intrigued by Celtic Crossing which is an Irish pub that offers a relaxing ambience along with delicious stereotypical cuisine.

If the Irish palette is not really your thing, there are plenty of other choices with Italian, Asian and American appetizing restaurants waiting for you.

Cooper Young trestle

The Cooper-Young district however is most famous for the historic trestle that is displayed across the railway bridge. In 2000, a local Memphis architect put together this iconic image of houses and businesses depicting the regeneration of Cooper-Young.

Broad Avenue Arts District

One of the very different yet newer Memphis neighborhoods is Broad Avenue Arts district. Until 2007, this was a relatively derelict area but efforts in the mid-2000s were made to regenerate this area and revitalize the storefronts into another popular arts district.

But the beauty of Broad Avenue is that there is more to it than you initially see when you drive or wander around this neighborhood. ‘This is We’ painted by Guillaume Alby is an iconic representation and located opposite to the storefronts in the industrial section of Broad Avenue.

broad avenue water tower pavilion

The Water Tower Pavilion is now used as a space for the community to showcase their talents and events, though this was originally a warehouse loading dock dating back to 1945.

Part of the wider Binghampton community in Memphis, Broad Avenue is a popular spot if you are looking to purchase souvenirs or goods ‘made in Memphis’. Homemade goods can be found in many of the shops here and if boutique style shopping is your taste, this is undoubtedly the spot for you in Memphis.

Dining may not be the highlight of this Memphis neighborhood but there are still options if you choose to grab a bite to eat. Broadway Pizza is a popular spot that has been around since 1977 but if you prefer oysters, head over to The Cove to sample the nautical-themed delicacies on offer here.

bounty on broad avenue memphis

Bounty on Broad is located on the corner of Broad Avenue and depending on the direction you approach, it is either the first or last spot you will see. It’s only suitable that this leaves a lasting memory and it certainly achieves this with the mural on the wall advertising this restaurant.

Overton Square

If you are looking for a fun place to hang out in Memphis, I challenge you to consider an alternative option to Beale Street.

overton square memphis

Overton Square may not be the first district on the tip of your tongue when it comes to entertainment, but this is a really vibrant area that provides an authentic Memphis experience while at the same time offering a diverse myriad of other cultures that creates a perfect environment to explore.

overton square memphis

The huge mural in the heart of Overton Square provides a perfect, eye-catching reflection on this budding neighborhood in Midtown. Thriving businesses that include a variety of restaurants, boutique apparel shops and even a locally owned sweet shop collaborate to create Overton Square.

If you are visiting Overton Square on the weekend, there is a parking garage that offers free parking (along with discounted rates in the evenings during the week) and a perfect spot to begin your exploring of this lively part of Memphis.

Let’s look at the myriad of restaurants here because in my opinion this is one of the best spots throughout the whole city for amazing cuisine.

babalu tacos and tapas overton square

Bayou Bar and Grill brings a New Orleans cajun flare to Memphis, while Babalu Tacos and Tapas offers a little Mediterranean style with a Southern twist. But I was most intrigued by Schweinehaus which offers a nice blend of German influenced cuisine with a little Memphis soul thrown into the mix.

These are just a few examples of the eclectic choices available while strolling around Overton Square.

Midtown – Overton Park

Midtown Memphis is a pretty large neighborhood made up of many smaller districts (such as some of those mentioned above). Much of what we have recommended so far is urbanized regeneration but what about those green spaces that are scattered around the city?

midtown memphis

Overton Park is a perfect example of a public park that breaks up the urbanization throughout Memphis and offers a relaxing spot for people to get away from the hectic city lifestyle.

memphis college of arts

Home to a nine-hole golf course, Memphis Zoo, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and Memphis College of Art among others, Overton Park is a haven of natural beauty.

We have visited Memphis Zoo a couple of times but never have we taken the time to explore the rest of the park.

Veterans Plaza offers a moment of solitude and remembrance while Rainbow Lake is a great place to take a stroll and burn a few of those calories devoured at the awesome restaurants scattered around the neighborhood.

Summary

So…are you convinced yet that there is more to Memphis than just Elvis and Graceland? These trendy neighborhoods may not receive the media attention they deserve, but I honestly think that’s a good thing because it ensures a sense of reality remains within them.

The 5 Memphis neighborhoods we have highlighted are not focused on tourism, rather they are driven to promote the locale in which they represent. These communities in turn provide a perfect, diverse representation of Memphis and no longer leave us thinking that Memphis is just a spot to eat BBQ and drink a few beers along Beale Street.

If you are planning a trip to Memphis, we suggest checking out one or two of the aforementioned neighborhoods because you will leave with a positive lasting impression of this beautiful city!

5 Breathtaking Attractions in Milan Not to Be Missed

18

Italy is a country that is spoiled for choice when it comes to history, culture and of course amazing cuisine. Add to this a plethora of gorgeous cities and quaint villages scattered around the iconic landscape and you have a country that has to be on your radar of must-visit destinations. But this post is not just about why you should visit Italy, instead I want to share with you 5 awesome attractions in Milan that will not only encourage but perhaps convince you to book a trip to Italy sooner rather than later.

During our Eurail extravaganza earlier this year, we started our adventure in Italy and specifically where it all began – Rome. A couple of days exploring the infamous landmarks such as the Colosseum was in reality just an appetizer for the amazing experience we had when we arrived in Milan. Taking the high-speed Frecciarossa train, the journey took a little less than three hours, providing us with a teasing look at the gorgeous Italian countryside (just another reason to explore Italy).

Milan Central Train Station

As we arrived at the Milano Centrale train station, I immediately realized that this had to be included in a list of attractions worth exploring in Milan. Whether you are arriving in Milan by train or other method of transportation, be sure to take a trip over to Milano Centrale to check out the gorgeous architecture both inside and outside this station.

top attractions in milan

There are many iconic train stations around the world such as Grand Central in New York and St. Pancreas in London, but I encourage you to add Milano Centrale because you won’t be disappointed.

milano centrale station

The hustle and bustle of passengers passing through the station is apparent just like in any other major station, but this truly is like a city within a city! From the myriad of shops available to a variety of services, Milano Centrale is one of the most active locations throughout Milan.

milan central train station

We were fortunate to be staying at the Hilton which is within walking distance of Milano Centrale so we took the opportunity to experience this landmark several times as a departure point to head downtown on the local subway line.

For us, this was the perfect introduction to Milan and we were ready to head out and explore more of what ‘The moral capital of Italy’ had to offer.

Milan Cathedral

After heading on the subway downtown and alighting at the Piazza del Duomo, we headed up the first flight of stairs and immediately stood there in awe at the sight in front of us. We have seen a number of impressive cathedrals around the world but after seeing the Duomo di Milano this went right to the very top of our list.

attractions in milan italy

The Milan Cathedral dates back to the 14th century when the construction of this Gothic inspired design broke ground. Although much of the architecture was complete, the façade was finished in the early 19th century though it was only in 1965 when the last gate was added and Milan could finally announce their infamous cathedral was completed.

milan cathedral

One regret I have from our trip to Milan was not being able to go inside and explore the cathedral. After seeing pictures of the elaborate details of the interior, I am anxious to see this for myself but if our experience walking around the perimeter of the exterior is anything to go by, we will be left speechless.

intricate details milan cathedral

The baroque style details on display throughout the cathedral alone make this an iconic landmark not only in Milan or Italy for that matter, but throughout Europe! I would put this alongside the likes of the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and La Sagrada Familia as quintessential attractions.

attractions in milan

You have to see it to believe it because words and pictures will never do the Duomo di Milano the justice it deserves.

San Carlo al Corso

Seen enough of the Milan Cathedral yet? Ok, so you can never get enough of this but as you begin strolling away from the Piazza del Duomo, you will likely experience enough other landmarks that will keep you occupied.

attractions in milan

Stroll along the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and you will be engulfed in a mass of high-class fashion brands. If you enjoy a little retail therapy, this part of Milan is the ultimate shopper’s paradise but more on this later.

san carlo al corso milan italy

Thoughts about heading on a shopping escapade may pass through your mind, but as you turn the corner and arrive at the Piazza San Carlo you will notice a gorgeous neo-classic church right in front of you.

San Carlo al Corso is yet another example of Italian architecture that leaves you speechless, the dome in particular leaving a memory that I will cherish from our time in Milan.

san carlo al corso milan

The exterior of the church reminds me of the Pantheon in Rome, with the large, granite columns providing a perfect foundation for the rest of the design.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

For the females out there reading this post, don’t worry I didn’t forget about the fine shopping districts available throughout Milan. If you are concentrating on exploring the area around the Piazza del Duomo, you are in luck because this is one of the shopping havens of Italy!

milan fashion

Milan is known as being home to many leading international fashion brands, of course given that many famous designers were born and nurtured in this very city.

The vast high-profile market for global fashion brands is on display on almost every street corner but if you are looking to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the Piazza, why not head inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I should probably give a little disclaimer here that you may be getting away from the tourism outside but there are equally as many people inside exploring the vast array of shopping options available here.

galleria vittorio emanuele ii milanThis Galleria is one of the world’s oldest shopping malls dating back to when it originally opened in 1877. The likes of Versace, Valentino and Prada can all be found here so be sure to have your credit card handy! Even if shopping is not really your thing, exploring this four story arcade that has a similar look to that of a train station, is well worth your time.

Open Markets

A morning stroll around Milan, just like any other European city, would not feel quite right without exploring the local markets.

christmas markets in milan italy

We were fortunate to be visiting Milan during the Christmas holidays so were able to explore the open markets on display outside the Milan Cathedral.

milan markets

Lining the Piazza with a plethora of intriguing stalls, this market was definitely a great place to find some local gems that you would not find in the mainstream shops. From a myriad of Italian cheese selections to a tasty Limoncello, there is plenty of local produce to choose from.

christmas markets in milan

One of the most intriguing stalls was the ‘Pasta di Mandorle’ (Almond Paste) with a wide selection of marzipan looking delicacies. Be sure to have a friendly encounter with the market stall owners because they are always willing to let you sample their fine product, of course in the hope you will purchase something for your enjoyment later!

markets in milan

I challenge you to explore a stereotypical market in Milan and walk away with nothing…highly unlikely when you see how mouthwatering everything looks.

Summary

Although the Milan Cathedral may be on most lists of top attractions in Milan, I wanted to share a couple of other ‘lesser’ known reasons why this city is such a cool place to explore. While we only spent a day in Milan, I saw enough to suggest a return trip will be sooner rather than later.

Whether you are a cognoscente of retail therapy or perhaps an art critic, Milan is ready to inspire you and likely provide everlasting memories of your time in this city. I’m anxious to return and I’m convinced that I will have many more reasons to add to why Milan is an Italian city not to be missed!

Zurich to Innsbruck – How to Make the Most of a Day Trip

4

One of the most appealing reasons to explore Europe is the close proximity of countries to each other, allowing nomads the opportunity to see more in any given trip. Of course when you have so much beautiful landscape to see, deep historical roots to learn about and delectable cuisine to sample, it’s tough to experience everything in such a short time.

We developed a pretty optimistic route to take in three countries in one day, hence the title of this post – from Zurich to Innsbruck (and everything in between!). I hope this post gives you a little insight into what can be accomplished if you plan your itinerary effectively.

Eurail Experience

While exploring Europe using the awesome Eurail experience (I will continue to reiterate our opinion that there is NO better way to travel around Europe than by using the awesome rail infrastructure that is in place), our base was in the heart of Switzerland for several days.

zurich to innsbruck austria

Based out of Zurich, we were able to plan several day trips which allowed us to explore the Swiss Alps along with everything else this beautiful country has to offer. But we wanted more, hence the reason we planned our audacious day trip from Zurich to Innsbruck!

The Route – Visiting 3 Countries in One Day

Three countries in one day – just another typical day in the world of A Brit and A Southerner. We were staying at the Hilton Zurich Airport hotel so at 6AM we scrambled out of bed and hopped on the first available shuttle to the airport before boarding the train to the Hauptbahnhof in the heart of Zurich.

Arriving back at the hotel at 11PM, we certainly maximized our 17 hour day but what about everything in between? Let’s take a look at the route we took.

zurich to innsbruck routeEssentially we spent time in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria though the majority of our time was spent in the latter.

Switzerland to Liechtenstein

Regardless of where you are staying in Switzerland, if you decide to take a trip to the small municipality of Liechtenstein, the route is pretty simple. Unless you are driving, the likelihood is that you will take the train to Sargans station before boarding the local ‘green’ Liechtenstein bus that will take you into the capital, Vaduz.

We boarded the train at Zurich HB around 7:15AM and arrived at Sargans a little over a hour later. Given that we were traveling on a holiday, the ‘green bus’ schedule was hourly so we had to hang around the station for a short while before heading to Vaduz.

vaduz liechtenstein

You can read all about our experience exploring Vaduz, but by 10:45AM we were heading on our way to Austria.

Liechtenstein to Austria

After experiencing everything that Vaduz and Liechtenstein has to offer, you can either hop on the green bus and head back to Sargans or alternatively take the opposite route to Feldkirch, Austria. This was the direction we headed because we had made the decision to take the train from Feldkirch to Innsbruck to catch a glimpse of what Austria had to offer.

sargans to vaduz liechtenstein

We had enough time to sit down and enjoy a coffee and pastry, though with a little more time I would have liked to get out of the station and explore the quaint town of Feldkirch. Our train arrived and we embarked on the journey that was just over 2 hours. Although we were both excited about Innsbruck, what we weren’t expecting was how breathtaking the journey was across the Austrian Alps!

feldkirch austria to innsbruck

Earlier that week we had explored the Golden Pass across the Swiss Alps, so we were literally spoiled for choice after seeing what both Austria and Switzerland had to offer in terms of natural beauty.

We arrived in Innsbruck shortly after 2:00PM and knew that we only had a couple of hours of both daylight and places being open, so we wanted to make the most of it.

Exploring Innsbruck

Our plan was to spend about 3 or 4 hours wandering around Innsbruck before catching an early evening train back to Zurich. The station is again in a great location geographically in relation to the heart of what Innsbruck has to offer. We didn’t have time to experience the incredibly modern Hungerburg Funicular, which I have heard is a pretty cool experience taking you deep into the mountains to experience the awesome Alps skiing resorts.

zurich to innsbruck austria

But we did have time to explore downtown Innsbruck and learn a little more about what the capital of Austria’s western state of Tyrol had to offer. Just like any other mid-size town across Europe, Innsbruck is a very walkable place at any time of the year.

The first thing we noticed even on a pretty frigid day, was the amount of people out and about either shopping or exploring Innsbruck’s impressive landmarks.

Triumphal Arch

In the heart of downtown Innsbruck is the towering Triumphal Arch or ‘Triumphpforte’ as it is referred to locally. Dating back to its construction in 1765, this grand design was initially built to commemorate the marriage of the Duke of Tuscany and Princess Maria Ludovica from Spain.

Empress Maria Theresia of Austria was the force behind developing the Arch, and if you look closely at the top, you will notice a picture of the Empress overlooking the city of Innsbruck.

triumphal arch innsbruck austria

These types of arches are common across Europe, whether it’s the Arc de Triomphe in Paris or perhaps one of the many arches in London. Innsbruck’s version is equally as impressive and given that this was one of the first landmarks we saw, it was a definite welcoming ‘gateway’ to inspire us to explore further.

triumphal arch innsbruck austria

Maria Theresien Strasse

Much of Innsbruck’s activity takes place just a short walk from the Triumphal Arch along Maria Theresien Strasse. This is the main street that houses many leading brands from around the world along with some local establishments and of course dining options that I am sure will satisfy your tastebuds.

Maria Theresien Strasse Innsbruck Austria

The atmosphere along the ‘Hauptstrasse’ is a perfect welcoming to Innsbruck and several times I felt myself just standing in the middle of the street admiring the fine architectural design of the buildings lining this street.

innsbruck austria

As the Maria Theresien Strasse connects with Herzog-Friedrich Strasse, the towering sight of the Goldenes Dachl construction is waiting for visitors walking the full length of this street.

zurich to innsbruck austria

This weird and quirky designed building is probably the city’s most famous landmark, primarily because it dates back to the year 1500 and is an iconic structure throughout Austria. The fire-gilded copper tiles provide ornate details of this fine architectural design.

weisses kreuz mozart innsbruck

Did you know that Innsbruck is also famous for a hotel where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed in the 18th Century? The Weisses Kreuz is still standing today along Herzog-Friedrich Strasse and you can learn all about Mozart’s short tenure at this residence.

zurich to innsbruck austria

In my opinion, the highlight of Maria Theresien Strasse is a myriad of side streets that tempt you away from the mainstream stores and lead you to tempting local bakeries and other delectable shops.

hauptstrasse innsbruck austria

A trip to Innsbruck wouldn’t feel right without sampling the delicious Sachertorte, but with so many other pastries and cakes to choose from, it’s an incredibly difficult decision knowing what to choose!

sachertorte innsbruck austria

Innsbruck to Zurich

I don’t think either of us was ready to leave Innsbruck but by the time we returned to the station we were ready to grab something to eat before boarding the train back to Zurich.

Our Eurail pass also allowed exclusive access to the VIP lounge at the Zurich station which gave us free wi-fi along with a comfortable setting.

An evening train journey of around 3 1/2 hours saw us pass through the Alps and back into Switzerland before arriving at Zurich Hauptbahnhof a little after 10:00PM.

Summary

An amazing 17 hour journey that I would highly recommend to anyone staying in Switzerland or neighboring countries. Three countries in a day may not seem a lot, especially when you read stories like Gunnar Garfors visiting 19 countries in a day, but this was definitely a worthwhile excursion. Liechtenstein may be the sixth smallest country in the world, but Vaduz is certainly a capital city worth exploring with a quaint feel about it.

The journey across the Austrian Alps is on it’s own worth the effort, because the views are simply breathtaking. Imagine those postcards with the snow capped mountains…that’s exactly what it looks like as you pass through the Alps on the train!

goldenes dachl innsbruck

Innsbruck was our final destination before heading back to Zurich, but I am glad we were able to spend a full afternoon here experiencing all of the history and culture that makes Austria such a popular destination for visitors.

Do you have any ambitious ‘day trip’ stories to share with us? We are always looking for new ideas for future trips so please share away!

How to Learn About Nashville at the Bicentennial Mall

Exploring any city around the world will generally lead you to finding various attractions, areas or cultures that stereotypically represent that city. In many ways our home away from home is Nashville, Tennessee primarily because of its location and also because of our fond love of this city.

With so many cool things to do and experience each time you visit this city, Nashville is home to a myriad of stereotypes that I now associate with this part of the state. And you can forget everything about country music because there is so much more as you have probably established from recent posts we have published. Today we want to share with you another perfect way to explore Nashville, through the gorgeous Bicentennial Mall State Park.

bicentennial mall nashville tennessee

History of Bicentennial Mall

As a lasting memorial to the bicentennial celebrations in 1996, Bicentennial Mall provides a distinctive snapshot not only of Nashville’s rich history but also of the state of Tennessee.

bicentennial mall Tennessee history

The 19 acre park provides a perfect reflection of Tennessee, not only through the iconic Pathway of History that details all those important dates between 1796 to 1996 but also through the variety of other features that will be detailed later.

bicentennial mall nashville

After spending quite a bit of time at Bicentennial Mall, it’s interesting to learn about the history of Tennessee and how this became the 16th state of the union back in the late 18th century. I can only imagine the celebrations that took place and I am sure these were recreated in 1996 when the opening of Bicentennial Mall was done to provide such a worthwhile commemoration.

Location

Immediately you hear the words ‘state park’, you probably associate this with natural beauty and everything that typically goes along with this. Of course, this reaction is understandable but there is an added twist to Bicentennial Mall State Park because of its central location in downtown Nashville.

After spending a full day experiencing everything downtown Nashville has to offer, I am sure you may be thinking “Why didn’t we include Bicentennial Mall in our post of top attractions in downtown Nashville?”

The reason was because of just how awesome this place is! We felt that this deserved a post on it’s own and hopefully you will be inspired to explore this for yourselves the next time you visit Music City.

bicentennial mall state capitol

The proximity to the Tennessee State Capitol is also an important aspect of Bicentennial Mall. Today, visitors can stand at one end of the Mall and peer directly down and then glance up to see the impressive State Capitol towering about the landscape on Nashville’s Capitol Hill.

Useful Information

Parking is for the most part readily available at Bicentennial Mall, except for when certain events are taking place here that make this a pretty hectic spot to try and explore. We recently visited this during one of these events and chose to return at a later date simply because of the volume of people trying to make their way through the Mall.

bicentennial mall nashville

If possible, I recommend parking on the west side of the Mall directly beside the Farmer’s Market which is yet another great reason to visit…but more on that later!

Address:
600 James Robertson Pkwy, Nashville, TN 37243

Regardless of where you decide to begin exploring Bicentennial Mall, you will find plenty of attractions and landmarks in between to keep you occupied. I am going to start at the southern point of the Mall, directly in front of the Tennessee State Capitol building, and hopefully provide a guided tour that will make you want to explore this part of Nashville in the near future!

Here is a map that is available both in the visitor center and also at the Tennessee State Park website.

bicentennial mall map

Tennessee Map Plaza

Walking down from Capitol Hill, you are welcomed with a really cool map of Tennessee that is pretty detailed. What’s even more amazing is that this is imprinted on the ground so you are able to walk all over the state. Given that Bicentennial Mall is focused so much on commemorating the state of Tennessee, I think this is a valuable resource especially if your knowledge of geography in this part of the US is lacking.

bicentennial mall map plaza

This 200-foot map is made out of granite and features the majority of key geographical and topographical landmarks in Tennessee, including rivers, cities and major routes. Smaller inset maps are available to provide a brief history of the state.

Amphitheater

If you choose to pay a visit to the Visitor Center or perhaps grab a bite to eat in the Nashville Farmer’s Market, you will walk out and immediately be faced with the spectacular sight of an amphitheater.

bicentennial mall amphitheater

This 2,000 seater design is of course an iconic landmark because of it’s association with Greek architecture and maintains Nashville’s position as once being reputed as the ‘Athens of the South’.

bicentennial mall nashville

Just like the Parthenon in Nashville, the Tennessee Amphitheater as it is commonly known, is another Greek masterpiece that provides visitors a glimpse of some of the original designs in Athens, along with it’s functional use of being a perfect hosting venue for special events (available for a fee).

World War II Memorial

Traveling around the world, you frequently stumble across unique monuments and memorials that stick in the back of your mind. This is definitely true with the World War II Memorial at Bicentennial Mall, probably because it is a rotating marble globe floating on just under 2 inches of water.

bicentennial mall world war ii memorial

A really cool feature given that it allows visitors the opportunity to explore the world as it was back in the 1940s during the Second World War.

bicentennial mall nashville

Another feature surrounding this memorial are the granite pillars that each provide words and images that depict iconic moments from the war, in relation to Tennessee natives.

Historical Pathways

I mentioned earlier about the Pathway of History that lines the western edge of Bicentennial Mall running parallel to the Nashville Farmer’s Market. However, this is not the only prevalent pathway here, instead there are a number of others that run throughout the Mall and provide an iconic representation of Tennessee on various levels.

path of volunteers

The Path of Volunteers runs inside the Mall and along with the Walkway of Counties that lines the eastern edge of the park, it provides an added feature that you can explore as you walk the entirety of the Mall.

Court of Three Stars and Carillon Bells

At the northern end of Bicentennial Mall is the Court of Three Stars. Designed in a similar pattern to that of Stonehenge, this circular plaza represents the three Grand Divisions of Tennessee (East, Middle and West).

court of 3 stars

Add the 95 Carillon Bells that are part of the towers that surround the perimeter of the Court of Three Stars, and this is a really awesome spot to relax and view everything else Bicentennial Mall has to offer.

These bells of course have an inherent symbolism and in fact they correspond to the 95 counties that make up the state of Tennessee. These gorgeous bells can be heard every hour, so be sure to plan your visit around this.

carillon bells bicentennial mall

Looking for a little more history? Another random fact is that there is actually a 96th bell that sits inside the State Capitol Building and this represents the government answering to the people of Tennessee. There is always a fun fact behind everything right?

Summary

Bicentennial Mall is a great representation of both Nashville and the state of Tennessee as a whole. With so many inspiring features that make you want to explore more, this relatively small urban park packs a punch with a variety of distinguishable attractions that each depict Nashville in a different light.

court of 3 stars nashville

From the Greek stereotype depicted in the Tennessee Amphitheater to the Court of Three Stars that represents the people of Tennessee, I am always excited to make a return visit to Bicentennial Mall to learn something new. If you add this to your itinerary, I am sure you will feel the same way!

Feel free to share your thoughts on Bicentennial Mall with us below as we would love to find out what inspired you in this state park.Weekend Wanderlust

5 Reasons Why the Parthenon in Nashville Is Amazing!

Athens may be home to all the infamous Greek architecture that we love, but did you know that Tennessee was home to a replica of the Parthenon? As a fond lover of architectural designs from around the world, I was intrigued to explore the Parthenon in Nashville. Following several visits to this iconic landmark in Music City, I want to share why I consider this to be one of the most attractive designs not only in Nashville but throughout the United States!

Please feel free to share your reasons why the Parthenon is a must-see attraction in Nashville, but here are my top 5 that I am convinced will sway you to add this to your itinerary, especially if taking a trip to see the original Parthenon is a little unrealistic right now.

1. Location, Location, Location

Located in the heart of Nashville, the Parthenon provides a full-size replica of the original. Dating back to its construction in 1897, this is a unique and different representation of Nashville given that most associate this city with country music and the Grand Ole Opry. Standing as a focal point in Centennial Park, after visiting here you will have countless reasons to justify a return trip.

nashville centennial park

The beauty of having the Parthenon inside Centennial Park is that it provides visitors with the perfect backdrop to explore this attraction. You can quite easily spend a full day relaxing inside this park with so many intriguing things to see and explore. Centennial Park was also created in 1897 as part of Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition.

Aside from the Parthenon, the impressive sight of Lake Watauga is a perfect companion especially when you are taking pictures of the Greek masterpiece from a distance. Although the water quality of this lake is a shadow of years gone by, I am encouraged to hear an improvement plan is in place to make this an even more attractive landmark for visitors.

centennial park nashville tennessee

Centennial Park may never hold the same heritage as the Acropolis in Athens, but it does offer a pretty viable alternative for visitors interested in Greek architecture.

2. Pinnacle of Classical Architecture

When you think of classical Greek architecture, the Parthenon has to be on the tip of most people’s tongues. Taking a trip to Athens is not necessarily a realistic option for everyone around the world, so to have a perfect replica in Nashville offers an alternative opportunity to learn about the intricate design that went into this construction.

parthenon in nashville

Exploring the Parthenon has to start with those giant concrete pillars that represent the original Pentelic marble that was used in the make up of the original design.

parthenon in nashville

The building was rebuilt in 1929 as it was initially deemed unsafe given that lack of quality construction that went into the original Nashville design.

Do the names Ictinos and Callicrates sound familiar? These are the architects that constructed the original in Athens alongside the sculptor, Phidias. Nashville’s construction may not have the infamous architects but what it does possess is a longevity that creates an awe-inspiring view even to this day.

3. Athens of the South

Nashville has been renowned as both the ‘Athens of the West’ and the ‘Athens of the South’ depending on where you are located geographically. Known to be one of the most refined and well-educated cities around the United States, Nashville was a roaring success until this all ground to a halt at the beginning of the Civil War.

nashville athens of the south

Following years of struggle and hardship, the Parthenon typified the revolutionary rebuilding of Nashville. Not only through the development of such an iconic design, but the symbolism behind the Parthenon and what this represents for the overall society played an important role in determining how Nashville was portrayed at the turn of the 19th Century.

The Parthenon was an expression and embodiment of Athenian wealth

Just as the original Parthenon was used to represent the wealthy individuals throughout Athens, Nashville was able to incorporate a similar philosophy while promoting this attraction. Throughout the last century, this has become a landmark that Nashville is proud to own and every time we return to Nashville we ensure that we have time set aside to experience this.

4. Nashville Art Museum

The Parthenon is also home to an impressive collection of artwork inside the art museum. While we all may be astounded by the gorgeous exterior of the Parthenon, why not head inside to explore the ornate designs and amazing masterpieces that are on display. A permanent collection of over 60 paintings dating back over the past two centuries are available for your perusal.

parthenon ornate design

Of course, a true replica of the Parthenon would not be the same without the inclusion of the Elgin Marbles and Nashville can proudly boast these very artifacts, even though they are made out of concrete rather than the original marble design.

5. A Piece of History

Given that the Parthenon in Nashville is the only ‘true’ replica of the original in Athens, it’s a pretty cool feeling to know that you are standing in front of a piece of history. There have been attempts to create similar looking pieces of architecture, such as the Walhalla Memorial located in Regensburg, Germany but to this day Nashville’s construction is the only version that is directly comparable to the ancient original.

nashville parthenon

Each time we have visited the Parthenon in Nashville, I take a moment to just stare at the magnitude of this design and I think about the original Greek architects that spent years developing the original.

parthenon in nashville

There is rarely a substitute for exploring the original and I hope that one day we will have the opportunity to climb Acropolis to experience the Athenian Parthenon, but for now the Nashville equivalent is an awesome alternative.

Summary

A trip to Nashville wouldn’t feel quite right if you didn’t take time to visit Centennial Park and explore the Parthenon. I will reiterate that visiting the original in Athens has to be the ultimate experience, but this is a pretty good alternative and kudos to the architects that inspired the recreation of this gorgeous structure in the early part of the 20th century.

parthenon nashville tennessee

Visiting the Parthenon in Nashville is more than just a historical look at this Greek masterpiece. It is an experience that you will cherish and want to recreate each time you return to Music City. Given that Nashville is so close to home for us (ok a 4 hour drive along I-40 is pretty close when you live in Arkansas!), we never get tired of relaxing by Lake Watauga with the beautiful reflection of the Parthenon creating a perfect setting.

I hope you are inspired to add both the Parthenon and Nashville to your list of must-see destinations in the southern part of the United States.

How to Find The Best Fall Creek Falls Hiking Trails

Always follow your passion because more often than not you will appreciate the end result. But what about those times when you make every effort to see something only to be disappointed at the outcome? Unfortunately this is exactly what we experienced when we visited Fall Creek Falls State Park to pursue my passion of waterfalls!

The myriad of Fall Creek Falls hiking trails may provide some spots of breathtaking scenery but I am now considering whether our expectation levels were too high prior to visiting this spot in the heart of Tennessee. The trip was not all negative and there are a number of memorable experiences to take from this encounter that warrants a positive review of this state park.

During one of our weekend trips to Nashville, we made the decision to rise early on Sunday morning and take the 2 hour drive to Fall Creek Falls. Our research suggested that a number of impressive waterfalls and a variety of hiking trails to explore were available at Fall Creek Falls, so we had enough ammunition to justify the additional 4 hour round trip to see what all the fuss was about.

fall creek falls tennessee

Where is Fall Creek Falls State Park?

Located in the heart of Tennessee, about 2 hours east of Nashville is Fall Creek Falls State Park. Accessing this state park from any location is not the easiest, so be prepared to take your time driving through some pretty scenic Tennessee countryside until you reach a pretty obscure sign advertising Fall Creek Falls State Park.

fall creek falls state park

There are a couple of routes you can take if driving from Nashville but we opted to drive south through Murfreesboro and then head across US-70S through a myriad of bustling towns such as Centertown and McMinnville.

Gorge Scenic Drive Trail

If you start out at the Nature Center, there are a variety of trails available to you depending on how adventurous you want to be.

fall creek falls overlooks

The Woodland trail is the most popular as it passes over the Cane Creek Cascades via a swinging bridge, but this trail also provides an opportunity to experience other connecting trails.

fall creek falls gorge scenic drive

The Gorge Scenic Drive Motor Nature Trail is a great alternative to capture many of the highlights available throughout this state park if you have little interest in hiking through the Tennessee wilderness.

fall creek falls hiking trails

Be sure to check out all the overlook spots, some of which are easier to access than others but all are worthy as you take in the breathtaking views across Tennessee’s landscape.

fall creek falls state park

But of course, you don’t visit Fall Creek Falls State Park without experiencing one or two of the many hiking trails available, so here are a couple of our favorites that we encountered along the way.

fall creek falls scenic drive

Fall Creek Falls

The highlight of Fall Creek Falls State Park is the waterfall that goes by the name of the park. Fall Creek Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in eastern USA, standing at 256 feet. We focused our attention on finding this natural beauty and I will admit that this is one of the easiest tasks we faced throughout the trip.

fall creek falls hiking

The winding road through the park takes you directly to a parking lot and a short walk from here leaves you at the Fall Creek Falls scenic overlook. With high hopes I peered over the edge only to be left in disarray as the waterfall was almost dry. A faint trickle was visible, ok so maybe it was a little more than that but it certainly was not what I expected.

fall creek falls

Don’t get me wrong, the waterfall at Fall Creek Falls is a highly impressive natural attraction and I can only imagine how cool this looks in the Fall or Winter when water is pouring down the mountains and over the edge. But don’t you just hate it when you visit somewhere and you are left slightly disappointed!

fall creek falls hiking

Perhaps taking the hiking trail to the base of Fall Creek Falls would provide a more appealing attraction. Although we didn’t hike all the way to the pool where people were bathing, we started out on the steep trail that passed through a gorgeous collection of ancient rocks while still providing views of the falls and distant dense forest.

fall creek falls hiking trails

The Base of Fall Creek Falls Trail is a steep trail to the bottom though at only 0.4 miles (the return trip will certainly be a workout especially in the heart of summer!) it is well worth the trek.

fall creek falls tennessee

Piney Creek Falls Bridge

After leaving what I can now admit to being a disappointment at the so-called major attraction, we headed around the scenic road before arriving at the parking lot for Piney Falls. Visitors are presented with a number of intriguing hiking trails, all dependent on your interests and how long you plan to stay inside the State Park.

piney falls overlook

I heard rumors that the Piney Creek Falls Bridge trail was worth the short hike so we opted for that one first. The trail is narrow and steep in parts though again it is one of the shorter trails available here. At only a quarter of a mile one way, it is hardly going to take your breath away but in the searing heat of almost 100 degrees, any further may well have been a little daunting.

Walking through the undergrowth which in parts is a little tricky, makes you wonder whether you are taking the right trail because you can hardly imagine a scenic bridge appearing. But never fear, as you turn the final corner and are presented with an opening, a rickety rather than scenic suspension bridge is right in front of you.

piney creek falls suspension bridge

It may not have the presence or size of a bridge like the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver that we have previously visited, but it certainly adds a quirky feel to the scenery.

piney creek falls bridge

Do you have what it takes to walk across the bridge, despite the pretty serious drop below you? Why not! I decided to walk across while Heather was content to take pictures of the bridge, the scenery below and of course my careful steps across what I can now say was a pretty stable construction.

Be careful how close you get to the edge of the rocks because there is nothing to prevent you from taking a pretty serious tumble. Imagine the views over the edge of Horseshoe Bend in Arizona…ok so the comparison is hardly the same but if you have been to either my point is that there are ZERO safety barriers, so be sure to watch every step you take or it could be your last.

Piney Creek Falls Overlook

Experiencing the Piney Creek Falls suspension bridge will likely give you the desire to take the alternative trail starting at the parking area to the Piney Falls overlook.

piney creek falls overlook trail

Another short trail makes this relatively stress-free though there are a couple of spots where you should be careful with your footing.

piney creek falls overlook trail

Arriving at the overlook, you may be left a little disappointed with the obstructed views that are available of the waterfall. Piney Creek Falls is located deep inside the gorge which for the most part is inaccessible, though the more adventurous travelers may see this as an opportunity to clamber through the rugged landscape on a 5+mile hike through the gorge starting out at Fall Creek Falls.

piney creek falls overlook

If you are serious about trying to get a closer look, I recommend reaching out to a local or even a park ranger at the visitor center who may offer a hidden trail that takes you to a more scenic view of Piney Creek Falls.

piney creek falls

Summary

Fall Creek Falls State Park is a difficult location to summarize because there are so many positive and negative aspects that we experienced here. From the disappointment of seeing Fall Creek Falls itself having very little water (I understand this would be very different if we visited in Spring, Fall or Winter) and Piney Creek Falls having obstructed views, just being out among the natural Tennessee environment made this a worthwhile excursion.

fall creek falls state park

I would encourage you to pay a visit here if you are passing through Tennessee along I-40, but whether it’s worth taking a 4 hour round trip from Nashville is highly debatable.

Perhaps driving here, parking somewhere near the Nature Center and then donning your hiking boots is the best option so that you can explore ‘off the beaten path’. I will leave the decision to you as to how worthy your time can be spent at Fall Creek Falls State Park!

How to Explore Downtown Nashville Attractions in a Day

Are you ready to head out and start exploring downtown Nashville attractions? Did you know that it’s possible to experience a lot of the downtown metropolis in just one day? Don’t be fooled though, Music City is more than just a ‘one day’ wonder and you will be ready to come back for more after taking time to explore everything this gorgeous city has to offer.

Nashville has become our go to spot for a weekend getaway. A short four hour drive makes this a perfect distance for us to take a weekend trip from Arkansas, either leaving after work on Friday or rising bright and early on Saturday. Despite all of our trips to Nashville, we have neglected to explore the downtown Nashville attractions and finally we decided that it was time to head on down to Broadway and see exactly what all the fuss is about!

Downtown Nashville Stereotype

I will be perfectly honest…I associated downtown Nashville with the home of the Ryman Theater and a bunch of country bars scattered along Broadway. Whether this is a stereotype that others follow or perhaps just an ignorant Brit, I don’t know but I will be the first to hold my hand up and say, “How wrong could I be!”

downtown nashville attractions

Ok, so yes downtown Nashville is home to the Ryman and yes there are a number of interesting looking bars (more of that later), but there is a lot more to explore than you may first notice. Hopefully this post will give you a brief insight into exactly what you should be on the lookout for during your next visit to Music City.

Nashville is a town that fosters creativity, and is a place where musicians have great respect

Thanks to Neil Portnow for this inspirational quote because this is so true! Once you have explored downtown Nashville, I am sure you will agree.

Here are the attractions we are going to take a look at in this guide, though as you begin to explore downtown Nashville for yourselves, perhaps you will add one or two more to this list (let us know if you do because we are always raring to head back to Music City to explore more!):

  • Batman Inspired Skyline
  • Broadway
  • The Goo Goo Shop
  • Schermerhorn Symphony Center
  • Country Music Hall of Fame
  • Customs House
  • Printer’s Alley

The first two on this list are fairly generic but I think it’s a great way to begin exploring Nashville. Below is a map that will hopefully help you identify the locations of all these recommended attractions.

Batman Inspired Skyline

Although there are countless places to start your self-guided day tour of all the downtown Nashville attractions, I highly recommend taking a step back and viewing the gorgeous skyline that Music City has to offer. A great place to see the skyline is from across the Cumberland River beside LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans.

nashville downtown skyline

If you are an early bird, you can park your vehicle by Cumberland Park and capture some amazing shots of the sun rising alongside the Nashville skyline. Of course Nashville has a fairly unique skyline because of one structure in particular – the AT&T building!

downtown nashville attractions

Ok, so AT&T may not mean much but when you hear the more commonly referenced name, ‘the Batman building’ many of you will know exactly what I am referring to. This colloquial reference is known among locals but of course word gets out and just peering into the sky at this gorgeous skyscraper…well you just can’t help but think of Batman with those two spires pointing out!

at&t building downtown nashville attractions

The Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge offers a stunning viewpoint of Nashville and the Cumberland river. We walked about halfway along this bridge and peered across the river as we contemplated our game plan to explore the downtown area.

shelby state pedestrian bridge nashville

I will add that Sunday mornings are usually a great time to experience downtown Nashville, though our time here was disrupted a little given that the Music City triathlon was taking place! 7:30AM on Sunday morning and seeing thousands of swimmers fighting against the current upstream in the river…not exactly what we anticipated but it was entertaining to watch the competition.

nashville cumberland river

Broadway

After soaking in the beautiful scenery, you will be ready to head across the Cumberland river and explore. In hindsight, you may want to leave your car on the other side of the river and walk across the pedestrian bridge to explore all of what downtown has to offer.

broadway downtown nashville attractions

We opted to drive downtown and were extremely fortunate to find a parking spot on the side of the road on Broadway. Parking is of course limited as with any downtown district, but there are a number of parking lots available for a small surcharge if you are not fortunate enough to find a spot along the road (metered parking is only Monday-Saturday, so Sunday’s are free!)

Nashville, man. That’s the place to be

Broadway epitomizes everything that makes Nashville ‘the place to be’. Willie Geist may have spoke the above words, but I’m sure many of us are thinking the exact same thoughts.

Walking along this sacred street where many of the world’s all-time musicians have strolled is a memorable experience. Just off Broadway is the Ryman Auditorium, home of the original Grand Ole Opry between 1943 and 1974. Imagine watching the country legends performing live on stage at the Opry and then taking a walk along Broadway before heading inside Ernest Tubbs’ Record Shop for a ‘Midnite Jamboree’.

ernest tubbs record shop nashville

Now what about these country bars and clubs we all hear about. Welcome to Honky Tonk Highway! Names such as Tootsie’s, Legends Corner and Layla’s Bluegrass Inn are popular spots along Broadway offering a wide variety of beverages and of course live country music.

tootsies orchid lounge nashville

I would highly recommend popping in to one or more of these bars because you never know who you may see in here. Legends such as Kris Kristofferson and Dierks Bentley have been seen plying their trade in these spots before their careers blossomed.

legends corner downtown nashville

One other awesome place you have to visit is Mike’s Ice Cream shop which is located on the heart of Broadway. The butterscotch shake was amazing and Heather tried the banana shake which equally as good.

mike's ice cream nashville

With a wide variety of flavors to choose from, this is a great spot to cool off before exploring more of downtown Nashville.

mike's ice cream shop broadway nashville

The Goo Goo Shop

If you haven’t already experienced enough sweet delights after sampling Mike’s Ice Cream, head across the street and down 3rd Avenue to find the home of the infamous Goo Goo Cluster.

goo goo shop downtown nashville attractions

The Goo Goo Shop is located across from the Johnny Cash Museum, so there is plenty to see along this street.

goo goo shop nashville

We succumbed to the temptation of buying Goo Goo clusters and if you have never tried them, where have you been! A delicious concoction of marshmallow nougat, caramel, and roasted peanuts covered in milk chocolate is what you will be tempted by. They are well worth the price and we bought a box of twelve for $16.99.

goo goo cluster nashville

Schermerhorn Symphony Center

It’s time to burn some of those calories after sampling ice cream and chocolate delights, so head on down 3rd Avenue after leaving the Goo Goo Shop and you will come across one of Nashville’s gorgeous, ornate buildings – the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. This symphony center is a relatively new construction, and although we were only able to capture a glimpse of the exterior, that was enough to imagine how beautiful this is inside.

schermerhorn symphony center nashville

The Harmony Fountain captured our attention as we wandered around the Nashville Symphony and is a delightful accompaniment to the center. If you are interested in impressive architectural buildings, I have to say that this is one of my favorite designs throughout the city so be sure to check it out.

harmony fountain nashville

To put the location of the Schermerhorn into perspective, this is directly accessible from the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge so perhaps this is the perfect starting point for your day tour of downtown Nashville attractions!

Country Music Hall of Fame

A short walk from the Schermerhorn takes you to the iconic Country Music Hall of Fame, and what an impressive building it is! I have heard stories about the Hall of Fame but I was in awe when I saw the magnitude and size of this place. Initially I thought this was probably the Nashville Convention Center but I soon realized that this was the Country Music Hall of Fame.

country music hall of fame nashville

The design of the Hall of Fame is modern and with a distinctive look that makes this a building you will never forget. But you may be asking, what exactly is the purpose of the Country Music Hall of Fame? I asked this very same question so I had to find out the answer.

country music hall of fame nashville

Essentially it is THE place that all country musicians strive to be inducted into. It is a way of recognizing notable key figures in the world of country music. In addition, it serves as a location to educate audiences on the evolution of country music, of course with Nashville being the heart of this tradition.

country music hall of fame downtown nashville attractions

Customs House

Looking for a building with a lot of history and character? Look no further than the Customs House that is also located on Broadway. Leaving the Country Music Hall of Fame, head back towards Broadway and after walking past the Bridgestone Arena you should be familiar with your surroundings. Take a left on Broadway and after a short incline (less than a 5 minute walk), the Customs House is located on the left and what a gorgeous attraction this is.

customs house nashville

I decided to keep this separate from Broadway because I want to emphasize the beauty of this building and encourage you to see this for yourself. This building is a typical example of Victorian Gothic architecture and the intricate details are clearly visible throughout the exterior, from the design of the lancet windows to the entrance with triple arches.

nashville customs house

But in my opinion the key aspect of this building is the gorgeous, ornate clock tower that stands proudly looking down on Broadway.

Printer’s Alley

Once the home of the local publishing industry, Printer’s Alley in Nashville is a quintessential narrow street that typifies the local entertainment and dining scene.

printers alley nashville

It may not be the easiest alley to find in downtown Nashville, but after passing by the Ryman Auditorium on 5th Avenue, keep walking until you reach Commerce Street and you won’t be able to miss the sign advertising Printer’s Alley.

printers alley downtown nashville attractions

I may be a little biased here given that this alley is home to the Fleet Street pub (don’t you just love the sign advertising this restaurant/bar with the London Underground feel to it!) but walking along here during the day offers a perfect opportunity to scope out some hidden spots possibly worth returning to at night when it’s a little more lively.

printers alley nashville

Printer’s Alley is a street with real character, so be sure to keep this on your list of must-see attractions while walking around downtown Nashville.

Summary

Downtown Nashville is more than just the country music stereotype many of us are accustomed with.

Nashville, Tennessee moves beyond its country roots and embraces a new, multifaceted role as one of our country’s leading arts-and-entertainment cities

When featuring Nashville in the American Way magazine, the author depicted Music City has moving away from ‘its country roots’ and after experiencing everything downtown Nashville has to offer, it is fairly obvious this city is now a haven for a variety of dimensions.

downtown nashville

The beauty of downtown Nashville is that everything is so easily accessible on foot. You don’t have to worry about hiking miles and miles to see all of the key attractions, and you don’t even need to think about finding the nearest public transportation station. The downtown metropolis is designed to be seen on foot and I hope this guide introduces a few of the ‘not to be missed’ spots along the way.

Dallas Arboretum – Why Its One of the Best Botanical Gardens

5

To grasp a greater appreciation of nature, we all need to be prepared to explore the inherent beauty that lies within protected gardens around the world. This is the sole purpose of botanical gardens around the world, to allow visitors the opportunity to further their knowledge and understanding which will hopefully encourage them to appreciate the natural environment surrounding them.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a multitude of natural gardens that are equally amazing, but having recently visited the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, I want to make a pretty bold statement and say that this is certainly one of the best botanical gardens around (at least in this part of USA).

Best Botanical Gardens – Beauty of Nature

Frank Lloyd Wright’s quote about the study and appreciation of nature has an inherent truth to it because I truly believe that by following this ideology, we will in turn have a much better environment to live in.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.

Is there anything better than waking up to the sun shining through your window, the birds chirping away outside and an array of floral beauty to inspire your day ahead?

best botanical gardens

I can only imagine what it is like for people that live in the immediate vicinity to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, and after reading this review I hope you too are convinced that this is a pretty spectacular haven of nature.

Admission Details

I want to start this review with what potentially may be the only negative aspect of this botanical gardens in Dallas. Admission prices are a little on the expensive side and parking in particular is a little pricey, though there are ways to save on both of these…so please keep reading!

  • Adult General Admission – $15
  • Seniors General Admission (65 & over) – $12
  • Children General Admission (Age 3-13) – $10 (Under 3 are FREE)

Of course, I would strongly recommend considering the CityPASS Dallas experience which will not only give you HUGE savings on the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, but also allows access to a variety of other amazing attractions in the area.

As mentioned, parking is arguably the most expensive because on-site or in the parking garage directly opposite the botanical gardens is $15. However, discounted parking is available on-site for $8 if you book online in advance. More details can be found here: Save Now for Parking!

A printed copy of the confirmation is NOT required, so as long as you have a copy of the e-mail on your phone or other device, you will be eligible for the discounted parking.

Dallas Botanical Garden Highlights

With 66 acres of natural beauty, it is no surprise that the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a location that you could quite easily spend a full day here exploring. Dating back  to the grand opening in 1984, this has become a nature lover’s paradise and after visiting here on our recent trip to Dallas, I can attest that there are a myriad of highlights worth exploring.

dallas botanical gardens

But where do you even begin when you have 66 acres to explore? Fortunately there is a very useful map with a self-guided route mapped out for you. There are 19 named gardens located throughout the acreage, and even the most active of travelers will find this a pretty good workout to walk around all of these exhibits.

Whether you decide to follow this route is entirely your choice, but I want to bring your attention to some of our favorite spots.

dallas botanical gardens

Despite the searing temperatures that we endured during our visit, the gorgeous floral arrays made us quickly forget the heat and created a perfect environment to relax and listen to nature’s finest species pass us by.

Jonsson Color Garden

A short walk from the visitor center and entrance to the garden leaves you very much feeling that you have been welcomed to a breathtaking location! The Margaret Elisabeth Jonsson Color Garden features a variety of stunning flower beds that offer an abundance of color as you explore the area.

When the sun is shining, there is no better spot to explore the seasonal flower arrangements ranging from azaleas in Spring to banana plants in Summer. The moment we stepped into this part of the botanical gardens, I knew that we were in for a real treat.

dallas arboretum and botanical garden

The beauty is magnified of course with the careful nurturing and cultivation of the flowers, but another intriguing part of this garden is the towering agave plant that leans predominantly towards the sunlight – a great example of phototropism taking place!

Palmer Fern Dell

If you are looking for a secluded location away from other visitors wandering around the botanical garden, take a stroll into Palmer Fern Dell which is a real enchanting spot with opportunities for gorgeous photos. Among the camellias, ferns and azaleas, this tranquil spot has a bench which is at the perfect angle when the sunlight shines through the trees.

dallas arboretum

The micro-fine mist that is frequently present here creates an eerie atmosphere but one that is relaxing and a perfect spot to just ‘getaway’ before exploring the rest of the botanical gardens.

Imagine a setting from ‘The Secret Garden’ and this is exactly what Palmer Fern Dell reminds me of.

A Woman’s Garden

Overlooking White Rock lake from the ‘Majestic Allee’, the stunning sight of the reflection pool typifies the beauty presented throughout A Woman’s Garden which is an iconic landmark at the Dallas Arboretum.

a woman's garden dallas arboretum

Whether you are male or female, you will appreciate the intricate details that have been added to this part of the gardens.

dallas arboretum and botanical gardens

The infinity pool is just one of many reasons to visit this garden. Standing directly behind this pool and looking across the lake, I had to look twice to realize that this was not flowing directly into the lake.

infinity pool dallas arboretum

I love the symbolic representation as you enter this secluded location. Water flows from one pool to another through beautiful miniature waterfalls. This design was done to represent women helping each other through generations of hardship but fighting through and creating equality.

a woman's garden dallas

A Woman’s Garden actually has two phases – the above describing phase 1 and phase 2 being implemented more recently in 2006. Features such as a quaint bridge and a hanging garden make this a perfect accompaniment to what I consider to be ‘the real’ attraction – the infinity pool (sorry but when you see this for yourselves, you will realize why I emphasize the beauty of this!)

a woman's garden dallas

McCasland Sunken Garden

Home of the Chico y Chica de la Playa sculpture and a gorgeous fountain that provides the perfect backdrop to just sit and relax, the McCasland Sunken Garden is another attraction worth visiting. The Mexican/American inspired sculpture is a popular setting for weddings but there is much more to this secluded garden than first meets the eye.

mccasland sunken garden dallas

We took our time strolling around the McCasland Garden because this offered a brief respite from the searing temperatures due to the number of shaded spots around this garden. This is also a really great spot to capture some cool pictures, with the fountain and staircase directly behind leading down to the central aisle.

The water feature may be the focal point of this garden, but you will not be disappointed at the beauty of everything else on offer here.

Nancy Rutchik Red Maple Rill

Do you a passion for waterfalls? I do!! Approaching the Nancy Rutchik Red Maple Rill, I was delighted to see a man-made (of course natural are always better but some of the man-made designs are really cool!) waterfall that provided a perfect opportunity to use our new neutral density filter that creates a really neat effect.

A stone bridge is located about halfway downstream and provides a perfect intersect where you can enjoy the waterfall flowing from the top or perhaps follow the meandering stream down the brook.

Summary

Heather and I both have wonderful memories from our morning visit to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Regardless of the length of time you plan on spending here, you can see from the recommendations that there are plenty of attractive gardens built into the 66 acres of stunning natural landscape.best botanical gardens

There are so many reasons to support my claim that Dallas potentially has one of the best botanical gardens in USA. I think the elaborate and careful attention to detail that each of the individual gardens are designed make this a hugely impressive attraction for visitors.

walls of water dallas botanical gardens

Of course there is so much more…I didn’t even mention the Water Walls which are really cool or The Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden which was designed as a perfect way to connect nature with children.

But I want to turn over this experience to you and encourage you to pay this gorgeous part of Dallas a visit the next time you are in the Lone Star State. You can also head over to our photo gallery to check out more inspiring images from our time at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Butterflies native to countries such as Madagascar, Costa Rica and the Philippines can be found fluttering away to their hearts content inside this temperature controlled environment.

As you enter the conservatory, the guide warns you about the 80-85 degree temperature along with a high humidity level which is the perfect environment for tropical butterflies to thrive. Of course, it’s a little steamy inside for visitors so be prepared to sweat a little! But I can assure you the experience of thousands of butterflies flying around as you walk through the trail is worthwhile.

Except for the temperature and humidity, be aware of your surroundings and where you step because many of the butterflies enjoy spending their time on the paths. With such a colorful display of butterflies, it’s a relaxing environment to just walk around and consider how these species would be reacting in their natural habitats.

The Butterfly House is a great way for children to learn about different species and of course it’s not just the butterflies that are on display. A plethora of plant varieties are available inside the conservatory and have been carefully selected for the butterflies to enjoy interacting with.

The Old Courthouse

Admission – FREE

In 1935, the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was designated a national historic site and of course today the most iconic of landmarks here is the Gateway Arch. The journey to the top of the Arch is a worthwhile experience, but if you are looking to explore the deep history and heritage within St. Louis, check out the Old Courthouse which is part of this memorial.

The courthouse may not have the same reputation as a global landmark as the Gateway Arch, but it is still an important structure of both historical and architectural significance. The history of his building dates back to the 1830s when the first foundations were put in place, but it is 1846 when the Old Courthouse became most famous.

The Dred Scott lawsuit was initially not considered to be newsworthy but it didn’t take long for this case to reach the US Supreme Court. The Scott case was essentially about freedom from slavery and lead to the start of the Civil War!

The ornate design of the Old Courthouse is certainly an inviting spectacle for visitors, both on the inside and exterior. We took a brief self-guided tour prior to our journey to the Gateway Arch, but there are guided tours available so be sure to check with the information desk.

Forest Park

Admission – FREE

In my opinion, the BEST free attraction in St. Louis has to be Forest Park! There is just so much to do here and yes, that’s right everything is pretty much FREE. You could quite easily spend several days here exploring all of the freebies, ranging from St. Louis Zoo which is definitely near the top of the best zoos around (regardless of whether it is free or not) to the St. Louis Art Museum which has a variety of exhibits on display.

There are a myriad of permanent collections and seasonal temporary exhibitions are popular attractions for visitors. If you are an Art History critic or perhaps someone who just enjoys wandering around art galleries, this is a must-see location.

Meanwhile, Forest Park is alive and kicking with a plethora of other entertaining activities. The Muny is a spectacular outside amphitheater seating 11,000 and frequently sells out when productions are taking place throughout the year. Tickets may not be free but they are well worthy of their value!

St. Louis Neighborhoods

Are you ready to get on your walking shoes and start exploring some of the hidden gems throughout St. Louis? The Gateway City is divided into a number of distinctive neighborhoods, each with their own unique characteristics that make them an attractive location to explore.

Exploring each of the 79 neighborhoods may be a little optimistic, but there are some key areas that are not to be missed. The Hill is a popular spot for Italian connoisseurs, while Delmar Loop is an attractive destination if you want to catch a movie or entertain yourselves watching live music.

Historic downtown may well be the focal point of St. Louis. Prior to our visit to the Old Courthouse and Gateway Arch, we spent some time walking around and taking in the architectural brilliance of the residential buildings and commercial zones. This is also home to the St. Louis Cardinals Busch Stadium and Edward Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams.

There is nothing quite like seeing how a city has been developed and what better way to see this than by climbing to the top of the Arch and peering down on the central business district.

Each time we visit St. Louis, we experience something unique that just makes us want to return! I love being able to explore the myriad of cheap attractions in St. Louis and I hope that we have inspired you to check out some of these also.

A weekend getaway that incorporates a combination or all of the above attractions would be a pretty cheap weekend for all the family. Kids will enjoy the Butterfly House and Forest Park, and of course the adults can sample a few beers at Anheuser-Busch!

The World of Videography

We have been looking into some devices that would help put a little perspective into the location we are exploring. We recently purchased a GoPro Hero 3+ which has great video quality (up to 4k resolution) and allows us to delve into the world of videography! With the quality and compactness of the Hero 3+, what a great way to walk our readers through our travels…literally!

Boost Plus Telescoping Pole

One accessory that is a must when it comes to a GoPro is an extension pole. I want to reiterate that this is an ‘extension pole’ and NOT a selfie-stick, though of course it is useful for capturing those candid shots and creating everlasting memories.

Many companies produce extension poles; however, the GoScope Boost Plus pole is very unique. This pole is a straight design, which allows you to have more control over the angle by positioning it differently with a quick turn.

goscope boost plus extension pole

For those of you with multiple GoPro cameras, you can mount two at a time, which is a pretty cool feature to have if you are looking to capture all angles of a video experience.

It’s all about the shot!

The GoScope Boost Plus is a telescoping pole that extends out to 40”. It has a remote clip for easy access, a sure handle grip for security, and of course stability.

Weatherproof in saltwater, freshwater, and snow, the Boost Plus is a great pole to have within your accessory stash. The compact design makes this an essential accessory to take on all your travels.

Revolution Buckle

Another must have is the Revolution Buckle that allows you to rotate the GoPro 360 degrees securely. This complements the Boost Plus nicely; having the option of a 360-degree view, you can position the camera and have the potential of adjusting the view anywhere.

One of the best things about this buckle is that you don’t need any other mount once you have this! No need to go through the arduous task of re-mounting your GoPro or struggling to find the best angle.

The beauty of the Revolution Buckle is that with the flick of your wrist, you can have any view you would like. In turn, it makes the potentially difficult decision-making process a very simple task!

Pros

  • Extends to 40”
  • Easy grip handle
  • Sturdy design that is built to last
  • Remote Control clip
  • Locks into place for added security
  • Revolution Buckle is the only mount I use

Cons

  • Steep price at $54.95 for the GoScope Boost Plus pole

Summary

GoScope is a company that molds itself on quality and stability. There are several other accessories that GoScope offers to make traveling with a GoPro easy and convenient. Having a great product with you while traveling is key to capturing those priceless memories.
