Bag Alert – What’s in Your Bag?

A common question that we all have is “What are the essential items to take when traveling?” I am sure we would all love to say everything but realistically we have to be smart about our decisions when packing our bags. The more practical answer is an array of tech items that help keep us organized and ensure that we remain ‘connected’ at all times. Of course, this is a crucial component of not only maintaining a travel blog but also a way of life nowadays!

I am sure that many would see this as a sad state of affairs that we rely so heavily on technology but given the abundance of products that surround us, we all need to keep up-to-date with our tech travel products. Let me ask you this question “What’s in your bag?” I am going to share with you a variety of technology products that have made my life so much better not only when traveling but in everyday life.

What’s in Your Bag?

Before going into specific details, below is an overview of the tech products I generally carry around in my bag!

Let’s take a look at each of the above items and I will share with you some of my experiences as to why these are such crucial tech products in my life. Perhaps one or two of these would fit nicely into your everyday life!

1. BlueLounge CableClip

BlueLounge Cable Clip (Large)

The BlueLounge CableClip is a great way to keep those hard to manage cables neat and tidy. I always have an issue with my cables popping out of my bag, but with this clip, I don’t need to worry about it. It is perfect for travelers to be able to get what you need out of your bag without just grabbing a handful of wires.

BlueLounge carries 3 different sizes of clips large, medium and small starting at $9.95. I have found this to be particularly useful for my MacBook Pro given that Apple cables tend to unravel fairly easy!

2. Dark Energy Reservoir – Portable Battery Charger

Dark Energy Reservoir Portable Battery Charger

The Dark Energy Reservoir – Portable Battery Charger is a compact device that provides a charge for a smartphone up to 6 times. It comes with the charging cable, plug and a fashionable looking case for the charger. The Reservoir design is the coolest part of this device, as it is very lightweight and sleek for all of us who only want to carry what we need. There are 3 LED lights on the front to indicate the battery life of the charger.

You can purchase a Reservoir from Dark Energy for only $99 which may seem a little expensive in comparison to other similar devices in the market, but this is durable, lightweight and of course very stylish.

3. Travel Lite Screen Wipes

Travel Lite Lens & Screen Cleaning Wipes

Travel lite have various wipes for everyday use but we get the most use out of the screen cleaners. These are streak free and you can use them on multiple devices before disposal. Starting at $2.49 these wipes are great for anyone.

If you want to know more on these wipes check out a post that we have featured earlier with more great products.

4. 13” Macbook Speck Case

One thing about MacBooks is that the aluminium exterior tends to scratch fairly easily, so in order to prevent that I would encourage you to look no further than a Speck case. The case easily clips on to your computer and has a very stylish look and feel.

Most people love that the Apple logo lights up and the Speck case enhances this illumination. Even though it is quite pricey at $49.95, it is nice having that peace of mind knowing that I have good quality protection and is easy to clean and maintain.

5. Inateck 4 USB Plug

I always carry the Inateck 4-USB plug with me as it is a very convenient device when you always carry at least 4 devices that all charge the same way. We have all been at the airport with one outlet and all of our devices need charging! Well, you no longer need to pick which device to charge as you can charge all of them at the same time.

This great accesory is only $14.00. To learn more about this plug check out our earlier post that has more items from Inateck.

6. Orbit Key

OrbitKey & BlueLounge Kii

When we travel our keys are always making noises but this is where the OrbitKey comes in very handy! There is a screw that goes through the hole and can hold up to 7 keys then tightens to keep them organized. It is very lightweight and dust-resistant.

Another cool addition is that there are accessories that you can add to this keyring such as a bottle opener and a USB Key that are useful to have with you as well. It might be rather expensive considering what it is, but for $29.95 what it does is an ingenious tool that I use every day.

7. BlueLounge Kii

Bluelounge is known for its clever innovation and unique design, and they definitely proved this with the Kii. This little Kii is designed to be on your keyring and is a USB to Lightning stick. It is something that is always with me when I happen to forget my cable or didn’t bring enough. As you can see from the image, it fits perfectly alongside my OrbitKey and is an integral part of my collection as I am always needing to find a USB to Lightning connection.

The Kii comes in 2 different colors, black or white and is also available in the 30-pin to USB starting at $19.95

8. Nice Gulp Cablekeeps

Nice CableKeep- Gulp

When you travel as frequently as we do, organization is incredibly important. You have probably noticed that throughout this post that a lot of what I carry is to enhance the overall organization in my bag. One of my major pet peeves is finding loose cables tangled and difficult to find. To help in this situation, Nice invented cablekeeps to organize cords as well as creating a stylish way of using your chargers.

An interesting fact about cable keeps is you do not have to stress over finding a name for these little guys, Nice has already named them – meet my new friend Gulp (see image above)!

You have your iPhone or iPad charger that slides into the cablekeep and the cable wraps around the fin and then can clip into place. Various ones are offered in several colors for $13.00.

9. iPad Mini Speck Case

iPad mini’s are extremely small and lightweight which makes this device the best and easiest way for us to keep up with the rest of world while we are traveling. I have a Speck fit folio case on mine and it is not heavy or bulky.

I am able to maintain having a device that is lightweight and protecting my device with this case that comes in various colors and styles for $39.99

10. Jot Pro Stylus Pen

Having a stylus pen is great however have you ever used a fine point stylus? I never did, a stylus is a stylus to me but once I used the Jot Pro I realized my theory was completely wrong. The fine point allows endless possibilities with the precision disc to aid in this challenge. Having a dampening tip also makes the strokes quieter and more comfortable to the user.

The Jot Pro also has a rubber grip for comfort and a magnetic cling for easy storage. This is definitely worth the $29.99 price tag.

11. Jackery Leaf Rechargeable Phone Case

Jackery Leaf Rechargeable iPhone Case

Let’s take a quick reality check and ask ourselves a question – how long are you on your phone every day? Well, one of the major problems with using your phone all the time is the battery life that diminishes rather rapidly!

Now when I need to charge my phone I use a Jackery Leaf that comes with 2 cases and a rechargeable battery charger. The case has a slot in the back that allows the charger case to snap into place. Some charging cases on the market require them to be on your phone the entire time but with this one, you snap on the charger when you need it and it snaps off to reveal your case underneath.

Competitors in this market are around $100 but the Jackery starts at only $49.95 which includes the 2 cases, battery case, and a headphone jack.

12. Audiofly Earphones

Audiofly is an amazing brand with a huge selection to choose from. We all have individual tastes and I know that this market is saturated but I wanted to introduce you to this brand primarily for their comfort level and also as they offer noise-canceling functionality which is key for long-haul flights. These are well worth the $39.99 for the best pair of in-ear headphones in this price range.

13. BlueLounge Messenger Bag

Most of the bags that I have carried in the past are heavy and have semi-accessible compartments, but this is where the BlueLounge Messenger bag excels! It is very comfortable and with a large, open main compartment for my computer, it provides easy access to anything you would need. It has front mesh pockets to easily store the little things that I need access to and zipper pockets to safely secure the smaller items.

The best part that I like about this bag is that it is easily adjustable while I have it on and has a custom aluminum quick release buckle. It is also water resistant and is an environmentally friendly fashion statement.

You may think that $139.00 is a little expensive but it’s money well spent to know you have everything you need to carry in one place! Plus it’s a great fashion accessory as well.

That’s My Bag

Many of the items in my bag are not necessarily critical to enhancing our travel experience, however, they definitely make traveling and everyday use much easier and more organized. In turn, this enhances your overall experience as you have everything readily available throughout your day to day routine.

I am always on the lookout for that next technology product that will help us with our travels, so let’s turn this over to you and ask you the following questions…

What’s in Your Bag? What items are your necessities?

Seattle CityPASS – Experience 5 Amazing Attractions

Whenever we visit a destination for the first time, we are always interested in exploring the top tourist attractions. Of course there is much more to experiencing a location and there is nothing better than finding those hidden gems along the way, but many of the leading destinations around the world have historic or iconic landmarks that are worth visiting.

Seattle CityPASS Overview

After deciding to visit Seattle and the State of Washington for the first time, we immediately donned our research caps and found a number of landmarks that we wanted to visit. The Space Needle, Aquarium and Pacific Science Center were just a few that we noticed in the Seattle region. This is where the CityPASS comes in handy!

Explore 5 of the following attractions for the all-inclusive one-time rate and you are all set. Priced at only $64 for adults and $44 for children between 4-12, this is an incredible 46% off the face value of all the general admission prices combined.

Here are the Seattle CityPASS attractions you can experience:

• Space Needle (Two visits)
• Pacific Science Center or The Museum of Flight
• Seattle Aquarium
• Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour
• EMP Museum or Woodland Park Zoo

Even if only 2 or 3 of these are on your bucket list, I would highly encourage you to consider the CityPASS because not only does it provide discounted rates, but it also enables you to skip many general admission lines so you don’t have to worry about queuing for hours.

Thanks to CityPASS, you can now experience 5 of the top attractions in a variety of cities around North America and after using these in Houston earlier this year, I can attest that these are extremely beneficial if you are a first-timer to any of the cities that CityPASS offer their great deal.

Space Needle

Undoubtedly the most famous landmark throughout Seattle and possibly the Northwest part of USA, the Space Needle is an iconic structure that is worth visiting both day and night. Well, thanks to Seattle CityPASS you can do just that and visit the Space Needle twice over a 24-hour period.

It goes without saying that the views are spectacular overlooking the metropolis of Seattle along with the Olympic National Park mountain range and Cascade Mountains on the other side, weather permitting of course!

I will say that visiting the Space Needle was at the very top of my bucket list and I didn’t leave disappointed. Despite the poor weather, we were still able to capture some great memories and gaze across the Pacific Northwest taking in the stunning natural scenery that is common in this part of the States.

You can read all about our time at the summit of the Space Needle here along with some pretty spectacular views over the Seattle region.

Overall Rating – 9 out of 10 (The views around Seattle alone make this a memorable experience! Added to this you can visit twice in 24 hours and you have an awesome attraction)

Seattle Aquarium

After heading to the top of the world at the Space Needle, head over to the Seattle Aquarium to explore some of the local marine life common in this part of USA. Sea otters play a major role at the Aquarium and are certainly characters with unique personalities. Mischievous, playful and ponderous, the sea otters are always willing to provide a show to visitors at the Aquarium.

But the Seattle Aquarium is much more than just home to these otters. Everything from octopuses to a myriad of exotic looking fish species are present throughout the variety of exhibits.

Overall Rating – 10 out of 10 (A definite must-see attraction in Seattle, especially if you have any interest in marine life or you just want to learn more about Puget Sound)

Pacific Science Center

Seattle has many amazing attractions but if you are looking for a fun-filled, family experience then check out the Pacific Science Center. This is a great learning experience for all the family with interactive, hands-on exhibits along with two IMAX theaters that offer a variety of shows to further your understanding of scientific theories.

We opted to visit the Pacific Science Center rather than the Museum of Flight primarily because we had decided to visit the Boeing Future of Flight Museum during our trip and also because we both love these interactive experiences. Even though many will think this is primarily designed for children, there is something here for all ages to enjoy.

You can read all about our experience at the Pacific Science Center here.

Overall Rating – 8 out of 10 (The IMAX experience make this a great attraction in addition to the interactive exhibits throughout the center)

The Museum of Flight

If you decide to purchase the Seattle CityPASS, one of the toughest choices is deciding whether you want to explore the Pacific Science Center or visit the Museum of Flight. Although we chose the former, the Museum of Flight offers enough for both aviation fanatics or anyone interested in learning more about the development of airplane technology over the years.

Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour

One of the best ways to see any city on the coast is to head out into the open water and peer back at the gorgeous skyline. Seattle is no different and courtesy of the CityPASS, you have the opportunity to take a one hour long Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour that takes you around Elliott Bay and the Seattle Harbor. Weather permitting, the views around the city will be stunning and you may also be fortunate to see the majestic backdrop of the surrounding mountain ranges around Seattle.

Unfortunately the weather was not in our favor so we opted against heading out on the tour but hopefully on our next trip to Seattle we will have time to experience this great attraction.

EMP Museum

Visiting Seattle just wouldn’t seem right if you didn’t hear some Jimi Hendrix playing around a street corner or two. Why not head over to the EMP Museum to explore many of the significant moments and memories in the history of Rock and Roll. Another interactive experience similar to the Pacific Science Center, this is a great spot to find the musician hidden inside you.

Woodland Park Zoo

Every zoo we have visited has a unique characteristic that makes it memorable and I am sure Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle is no different. The variety of animal species on show and the spectacular close-up viewing opportunities for visitors make this a great alternative to the EMP Museum if that doesn’t interest you. The only problem again is deciding which of these two great attractions to reject!

Summary

So there you have the Seattle CityPASS options!! We visited three attractions and even if time only permits you to visit two or three on the list, it is still a worthwhile purchase as you can save time and money with this pass.

As I mentioned, the most difficult choices you will have are the two alternatives where you have to pick one attraction or the other. Perhaps you will decide to visit one and then pay general admission rates for the other, but either way I can guarantee that you will have a great time exploring some of the best attractions Seattle has to offer.

Travel Tech 101 – Accessories to Turn an iPad into a Laptop

Whether you are a travel blogger or simply someone that enjoys traveling, the likelihood is that you will want to ‘stay connected’ while on your travels. The question is – what device(s) do you take?

Today I want to make a case to support the argument that an iPad can do everything your laptop can, especially with a few accessories that make life so much better. If you have followed our Travel Tech 101 series, you will recall we are firm believers of Inateck’s products so it is no surprise that we were immediately ready to use their brand new iPad Bluetooth keyboard and iPad Air case.

Technology is always evolving and trying to keep up with the latest advancements is a near impossible task. As travelers, we are always looking at becoming more efficient and finding the most portable devices to take with us on our travels. At the same time, it is of paramount importance that the devices we take with us allow us to keep our website updated and also social media platforms, along with other less important capabilities such as photo editing software.

Can an iPad replace my laptop?

I have always been a huge proponent of taking my laptop with me. I used to carry around an Acer Aspire One netbook, which was small, portable and allowed me to perform the majority of day-to-day tasks required. After purchasing a MacBook Air in 2013 and suffering the ill fate of the screen going out, I continued in the world of Apple by upgrading to a MacBook Pro with Retina 13” which I really love. However, portability wise it is still lacking a little so I am always on the lookout for something to take on our travels.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

We have asked ourselves the question about whether an iPad can replace our laptop on several occasions but each time we have found something lacking that makes it difficult to justify making the switch. This argument is one that will likely always have pros and cons and the best way to answer this question is to simply say this is down to personal preference and what your specific needs are within a device.

Turn an iPad into a Laptop

I have used a variety of different iPad models including the Mini, the iPad 2 and now the Air which I am most impressed with due to the sleek look and lightweight feel (I am sure the Air 2 is even better but for now I am satisfied with the first edition!)

It’s a million dollar question in the technology world about what accessories should be created to turn an iPad into a laptop, but we think Inateck have done a great job with their iPad Air cover and a wireless Bluetooth keyboard to enhance your experience especially when on the road or taking a long flight somewhere.

iPad Air Cover

Protection is key right? At least that’s what we always hear, especially when it comes to fragile electronic devices! Imagine spending $400-$600 on a product that the first moment you drop it, will likely break into a thousand pieces! Well, that’s the harsh reality with an iPad so it is crucial that you look after it both when using and also when stored in your backpack.

The new iPad Air protection case from Inateckprovides this added piece of mind when you have it stored away. I LOVE this case; not only because of the protection but also because of how cool it looks. I despise the look and feel of OtterBox cases (sorry fans of this brand!) and I want something that will keep my device safe yet still look stylish. I also love the look of this case because it goes synonymously with the MacBook Air/Pro sleeve that I have from Inateck.

But this iPad case is not just about protection because there are a couple of hidden features that make this a perfect companion with your iPad Air and supports the statement that you could replace your laptop with an iPad!

Here are some of the key features of the iPad Air case by Inateck:

  • High quality soft felt inside and outside that ensures the iPad remains scratch free;
  • Magnetic buckle also adds an extra layer of security so that the iPad doesn’t fall out;
  • Case has dual functionality and a built-in support function to work as a stand with the magnetic buckle holding up the front of the iPad.

If you need any more convincing that this product is worth trying, a price tag of only $10.99 will surely sway you to opting for this case! If there was ever a bargain in the world of technology, I am convinced that this is it. Try it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard

So you have the case to protect your iPad and also serve your needs as a functional stand, but there is still the problem of using an iPad as a typing device. Could you imagine typing a long blog post, long e-mail or a paper as a student using the touchscreen function? Maybe you could, but I know I couldn’t so I want something that I can use in tandem with my iPad.

Welcome to the new wireless Bluetooth keyboard by Inateck. Ok so there is an abundance of wireless keyboards in the market that serves the same purpose as Inateck’s but at the same price point from my experience, the other competitors are less reliable. Perhaps that was just my unfortunate experience but this keyboard is far superior to anything I have used previously.

One of the key advantages of Inateck’s Bluetooth keyboard is the size. I have previously used iPad cases with built-in keyboards but honestly, the keys are either too small or not ergonomically friendly. Inateck provides a full-sized keyboard and an aesthetically pleasing appearance to make this a great addition to your backpack!

Here are some of the additional key features of the wireless Bluetooth keyboard by Inateck:

  • Bluetooth 3.0 technology providing high-speed connectivity between keyboard and iPad;
  • Operating hours over 60 days;
  • Low noise keyboard;
  • Compatibility across Mac OS/iOS, Android and Windows platforms.

Inateck’s low pricing philosophy continues with this wireless Bluetooth keyboard and for only $18.99 this can be yours!

Summary

Inateck have produced two high quality products here that will help turn your iPad into a laptop…Ok so maybe you still need more convincing and honestly so do I because I am such a fond lover of my MacBook Pro!

I am a firm believer that there is huge potential out there for the tablet in general to replace the laptop but I am still not completely sold that we are there just yet. For just over $30, you can have two great accessories that will transform your iPad into a more user-friendly device especially when traveling and you want something more than just a device that you can watch a movie or play Angry Birds! Regardless of your opinion on the iPad vs. laptop debate, Inateck has designed accessories here that is well worth purchasing.

What is your opinion on this debate of iPad vs. laptop? Do you think we technologically advanced enough yet with any of the products on the market to replace the laptop with a tablet device?

Saturday Snaps #17 – L’Arc de Triomphe

arc de triomphe paris

Location: L’Arc de Triomphe is located in the heart of Paris, France

Author: Chris & Heather Boothman (A Brit & A Southerner)

Description: We decided this week to share with you one of our favorite images from our travels to Paris in December 2013. Visiting Paris around Christmas is amazing, not only because you get to experience the variety of Christmas markets along the Champs Elysees but also the iconic landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe sparkle in the winter chill.

The Arc de Triomphe is situated in the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle at the end of the Champs Elysees. We really enjoyed our time walking the full length of this iconic strip and then gazing up at this towering structure that is undoubtedly one of the focal points throughout Europe.

This French icon represents those that fought bravely and lost their lives during both the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lays beneath the Arc de Triomphe and represents all those that died in both world wars and were never identified.

We visited the Arc de Triomphe on several occasions and even this wasn’t enough because it is just one of those landmarks you could keep revisiting and see something different every time.

Pacific Science Center – A Fun-Filled Interactive Experience

Do you ever wonder how the technological evolution of the world has taken place over the years? One word to explain this would be ‘science’! It may sound simple but the reality is that there is an abundance of underlying complexities that comprise this concept. The best way to explain this is to experience it with your own eyes and that is exactly what we did during our trip to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

Science is everywhere around us. Just take a moment to look around wherever you are right now and consider the intricate details that go into the theories and precise functionality of everyday products. The Pacific Science Center is an amazing experience that provides you with hands-on involvement with a myriad of exhibits.

I will add that we arrived at the Pacific Science Center just after 4:00PM, so we only had very limited time to explore all of the exhibits as the center closed at 5:00PM. Even in the short time we spent there, we were able to learn, enjoy and develop a better understanding of a plethora of concepts in the science domain.

Ground Floor Experience

After purchasing your tickets, or using the Seattle CityPASS as we did, the ground floor provides a few basic scientific models such as how mirrors work or how a zip works.

Let’s take something pretty basic such as the zip on your jacket. Who would have thought that such a basic concept as a zip would be so powerful in today’s society? You may be thinking that science has nothing to do with a zip, but the interconnectedness of either side of the zip is a theory that was designed years ago and nowadays we simply take this for granted!

Explore Variety of Scientific Theories

As you move around the center, there are essentially five different buildings to explore and certainly one hour is not enough time to experience everything. Whether you have a keen interest in learning more about “Dinosaurs: A Journey Through Time” or you want to gain a better understanding of the human body in the “Wellbody Academy”, there is something for everyone.

In addition to the various buildings full of interactive exhibits, the Pacific Science Center is home to not one but two IMAX theaters. Both of these provide daily shows and are a great way to experience what you have learned throughout the center in a 3D setting.

Boeing IMAX 3D Theatre

We arrived at the Pacific Science Center just in time to capture the final showing at the Boeing IMAX 3D Theatre. Learning about the ‘Great White Shark’, ranging from how scientists are continuing to learn more about the migration patterns of the dominant shark in open waters to the free diving with great white sharks in Guadeloupe.

The movie lasted 40 minutes and really provided a captivating experience with the great white shark. I am not a huge conservationist but also realize that animals such as the great white shark are species we should respect. The lack of knowledge we all have for this shark species is probably because of the fear factor we have for them, but movies such as this are out there to provide more information and possibly make us change our viewpoints of these creatures.

A Paradise for Children

We both really enjoyed our short yet rewarding time at the Pacific Science Center but the reality is this experience is most suited to children and enhancing their overall understanding of science.

Everything throughout the building is catered to allow children to maximize their time and experience, whether it is through the hands-on exhibits or simply from the plethora of learning materials that are readily available on the walls or by displays.

Why visit the Pacific Science Center?

You may be wondering what differentiates the Pacific Science Center from any other similar experience we have encountered such as the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia? Well, the first thing I noticed when we started walking around was the number of employees available to help answer any questions.

Customer service really goes a long way to enhancing your experience and whether you have a question about a certain exhibit or simply want directions to the IMAX Boeing 3D experience, there is always someone to point you the right way! We really enjoyed our time at Seattle’s version of presenting a science center learning experience and definitely feel that you should take a trip also because you never know what you may learn!

You can view more of our pictures from our experience at the Pacific Science Center by exploring our Seattle Photo Gallery here.

Weekend Wanderlust

Space Needle – A View of Seattle from Above

Viewing a city from an overhead perspective is a great way to visualize the architectural beauty that fits all of the pieces together to make up a city. Heading to Seattle, we were excited about heading to the summit of the iconic structure that is the Space Needle and take in the spectacular views of not only the surrounding city, but also the harbor, bay area and distant mountain ranges.

Standing at 605ft tall, the Space Needle was once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River and its history dates back to 1961 when construction was finalized in time for the Seattle World Fair in 1962.

Two Trips Are Better Than One

Arriving in Seattle on a stereotypical day in terms of the weather, yes that’s right you guessed correctly with torrential rain and a misty atmosphere, we were hopeful that the weather would improve to maximize our experience at the Space Needle. Courtesy of the Seattle CityPASS, we had access to the Space Needle on two separate occasions during a 24-hour period. This is ideal if you want to take in the views during the day and then head back later to take in the scenery at night.

During our second day in Seattle, we noticed a gap in the weather and almost caught a glimpse of the forgotten concept in this part of the world – sunshine! We decided that this was our opportunity to head up the Space Needle and hopefully the weather would remain on our side, at least until we had time to take in the scenic views.

Parking and Admission

Parking around the Space Needle is just like any other city center. Limited yet available but at a premium price! Fortunately we found a spot not too far from the structure that was actually the parking lot for the local Seattle Ducks that apparently was closed for the winter season. A short walk lead us to the base of the Space Needle and after heading through a brief security checkpoint, we headed up the elevator to the summit.

After exiting the elevator, you are immediately faced with the gorgeous views around Seattle. A 360-degree observation deck allows you to head outside and face the elements as you walk around and peer through the railings across this beautiful city.

Unfortunately due to the inclement weather of the previous day and given the overcast conditions, our views across the bay and towards the Cascade Mountains and Olympic National Park were restricted. But the overhead conditions didn’t prevent us from taking in the jaw-dropping views of downtown Seattle and into the surrounding metropolis.

Views of the city

I am a huge proponent of experiencing skyscrapers and the tallest structures around the world so it was natural that we visited the Space Needle. Heading to the summit of these buildings is a great way to map out the rest of your stay in a location because you get a birds eye view of the city and can spot some of the landmarks you wish to visit. Here is a quick tip – map out your journey around the city mentally and then put these ideas into practice when you return to ground level!

I could probably have stayed outside taking in the Seattle air for several hours but we returned inside and experienced the really cool, interactive wall that provides photographs of the Space Needle, Seattle area and beyond. Another feature of this wall is that you are able to add your ‘hometown’ location and it outlines a route along with the distance from the Space Needle (a nice way to market A Brit and A Southerner!)

A Revolving Restaurant

If you are interested in really maximizing your experience at the Space Needle, I would recommend heading to the Space Needle Restaurant at the top, which is a revolving deck and provides a romantic ambience with stunning views around the city. Reservations ahead of time are recommended if you want to take advantage of this restaurant and treat your loved one to a luxury meal as you feel like you are on top of the world.

Why Visit the Space Needle, Seattle?

The Space Needle experience is no different from any other tall structure around the world. You take the elevator to the summit and then simply take in the spectacular views. But the unique aspect here is that you are able to view Seattle in a way that no other structure can provide. I highly recommend experiencing the Space Needle and seeing Seattle from a different perspective!

Try this at the beginning of your visit and you will really reap the benefits later as you continue to explore the rest of Seattle.

You can view more of our pictures taken at the top of the Space Needle and also inside here: Space Needle Seattle Gallery.

Explore Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama

Where can you go to experience some of America’s finest beaches yet still have plenty of activities and attractions to explore? Many people would probably mention destinations in Florida or California but we want to share with you our thoughts on Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama and why this is such an appealing destination for us!

Hopefully after reading this, you will be inspired to explore this part of South Alabama that sits along the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Coast offers 32 miles of breathtaking beaches but in addition, there are a myriad of things to do along this stretch of coastline that will satisfy every visitor. Whether you are looking to indulge in delicious local seafood or perhaps experience your own fishing expedition, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are the perfect locations to experience this and much more.

Pristine White Sand Beaches

If you are looking for pristine, white sand beaches you would be hard pressed to find any beaches around USA with cleaner, more relaxing beaches than Gulf Shores. Alabama is not likely to be the first US state you would think of when it comes to perfect beaches, but after taking in the views and smoothness of the sand you may be inspired to check this out for your next vacation.

But if the beaches at Gulf Shores are not enough for you, just along the Alabama coastline is Orange Beach which provides miles of sandy beaches AKA “the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway!” From the tip of Historic Fort Morgan (more on this later), there are 32 miles of gorgeous beaches…certainly no shortage of beautiful spots to take an early morning stroll or enjoy the breathtaking evening sunsets that are typical in this part of the world.

Explore Historic Fort Morgan

One of the finest examples of military architecture in the New World

If the beach life doesn’t provide enough inspiration to head to Gulf Shores, perhaps exploring the historic masonry fort that is Fort Morgan may interest you! As you can see from the above quote that is frequently referenced by leading scholars, Fort Morgan played an integral part in four wars and has been the safeguard of Mobile Bay since 1834.

It is no surprise that Fort Morgan was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. Visitors can take tours of the fort and accompanying museum to learn all about the historic battles that took place here.

Admission: $7 Adults; $5 Seniors and Students; $4 Children (Age 6-12). Free entry for active duty, veterans and children under 6.

Championship Golf Courses

The moment I saw that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama played host to a number of championship golf courses, I was sold!! Whether you prefer to play the Scottish links style courses or rolling hills parkland courses, there is something here for every golfer, regardless of standard.

Craft Farms plays home to both Cypress Bend and Cotton Creek and both of these are impressive looking Arnold Palmer designed courses. Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike, while Kiva Dunes is a rugged, links style course that should be on every golfers radar when visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

While the traditionalists may love the golf courses in this part of Alabama, for those looking to try a trendy new sport, why not experience FootGolf at Glenlakes Golf Club in nearby Foley. Golf in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is for everyone to enjoy, so don’t forget to pack your clubs when heading to the Gulf Coast!

Dolphin Cruises

One of the most exciting encounters you can have with wildlife is a dolphin cruise where you head out into the open water and see dolphins in their natural habitat. Orange Beach is the perfect spot to head out into the Bay area and whether you want to experience a glass-bottomed catamaran for the idyllic viewing opportunity or simply want to gaze over the side of your chosen vessel, the chances of seeing a dolphin are high when taking one of these tours.

Art Galleries and Museums

Are you looking for a trip to enhance your intellectual levels by visiting a variety of art galleries and museums? Gulf Shores offers a myriad of options dependent on your interest but one museum that I am particularly intrigued with is the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. Not only can you wander around the battleship, you can also explore the USS DRUM submarine.

Alabama’s Finest Cuisine

Heading to Gulf Shores wouldn’t be the same without sampling some of Alabama’s finest cuisine. Of course seafood is the primary dish and I would recommend entertaining this as your mainstream diet while staying in Gulf Shores.

Whether you want to sample Coconut Shrimp from Bahama Bob’s Beach Side Cafe or you prefer the more upmarket seafood and steak from Nolan’s Restaurant & Lounge, there are enough options to keep your taste buds occupied.

After experiencing the delectable cuisine in Gulf Shores, The Wharf located at Orange Beach is a haven for more great restaurants plus a myriad of entertainment and shopping options for that extra retail therapy if you haven’t experienced enough of Alabama already! For those of you that need a little extra caffeine before exploring more of the Gulf Coast, check out the best local coffee shops in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, including The Southern Grind at The Wharf.

Summary

Gulf Shores may not be the most attractive destination for the global media like Miami or Key West, but what it does offer is a variety of reasons that will hopefully convince you to choose this option!

When you add nearby Orange Beach to the mix, you really have a perfect destination with two coastal locations that ooze natural beauty and offer enough for visitors to be entertained during their visit.

We are really looking forward to heading to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to explore many of the above listed reasons, though this is just a brief overview of what is available in this part of Alabama.

Saturday Snaps #16 – Grossglockner Alpine Road

Grossglockner Alpine Road

Location: Grossglockner Alpine Road, Austria

Author: Samiya Selim @ The Selim Family RAASTA

Description: We did the Grossglockner Alpine Road drive during our 3 week road trip through 6 countries in Europe this summer.

The drive includes 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 (crazy) bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres!

The road takes you to the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, which has some amazing hiking trails.

From the top to the bottom, you cross all zones of vegetation, ranging from corn fields to perpetual ice! A paradise for fast car lovers and motorcyclists, the drive is aptly named “The Grossglockner – Bikers Heaven”

At its highest point is Glockner, standing at 3,798m -the highest mountain in Austria and among the highest peaks in the Alps.

Although we didn’t get to do even a third of the activities possible there, the drive itself along with the stunning panaromic views, seeing the waterfalls and glaciers, and playing in the snow was more than enjoyable enough for us passing through to get to our destination!

Southport – Explore a Seaside Resort in North-West England

Whenever I return home to England with Heather, one of the great aspects of our travels is that we are able to visit many of my favorite childhood spots. Many of the locations that we visit in North-West England are ‘hidden gems’ in the global tourism scene, mainly because they don’t have the media hype like London or Liverpool.

During our recent trip to England, we headed west from my hometown of Ramsbottom to the seaside resort of Southport. After reading this, perhaps you will consider visiting such a destination rather than just exploring mainstream England. Southport is located just north of Liverpool along the coast and about 20 miles south of the Fylde Coast neighborhood containing the likes of Blackpool and Lytham & St. Annes.

This part of England is frequently referred to as the ‘golfing capital’ of the country, mainly because much of this coastline is made up of links golf courses including Royal Birkdale, Southport and Ainsdale and Royal Liverpool. I am always intrigued to visit locations that have world renowned golf courses, but Southport does have much more to offer than just an array of top golfing links.

Our recent trip to Southport was all about exploring the town centre and figuring out what makes this such an attractive destination for many visitors. Hopefully this will inspire you to check out Southport during your next trip to England, especially given it’s great location in comparison to other leading cities such as Liverpool and Manchester.

Lord Street Shopping Centre

Lord Street provides visitors the perfect opportunity to get their fix of retail therapy with a variety of boutique shops and mainstream stores to meet everyone’s needs. However, Lord Street is much more than just a shopping precinct because there are numerous restaurants, bars and coffee shops for people to grab a light snack or relaxing beverage before moving around to explore more of what Southport has to offer.

I am certainly not a proponent of visiting somewhere simply because of the shopping options available but Southport is one of those spots in England that you could certainly do that.  Spend all day wandering around the diverse array of stores available or marvel at the Victorian style architecture along Lord Street.

During our last visit, we spent a couple of hours exploring Lord Street alone. Due to the stereotypical English rain as we walked the streets of Southport, our time admiring the buildings was curtailed. Parking is available either using the Park and Ride facility if you prefer the cheaper option, or for the more convenient choice there are a variety of car parks scattered in close proximity to Lord Street.

Historic Landmarks

Lord Street is not just recognized as a mainstream shopping hub, but it is also known for the historic landmarks and pieces of architecture that stretch along this part of Southport’s coastline. The Victorian style architecture is apparent throughout the storefronts and other buildings along Lord Street.

When you walk around Southport, there is a distinct blend of Parisian style boulevards and old Victorian English design.

The War Memorial located in London Square along Lord Street is another popular spot for visitors. The obelisk is surrounded at either end by two colonnades that are designed in the style of Greek temples. Outside of these two temple like designs are pools of remembrance and accompanying fountains that together provide a perfect memorial spot for visitors to pay their respects to those lives that were lost in the two World Wars.

Southport Pier

Many of England’s most famous seaside locations are renowned for their iconic piers and Southport is no different! Southport Pier offers visitors a piece of history as it is the oldest standing iron pier in the country and also second longest throughout the UK. But there is something else that is a little more unique about Southport’s iconic attraction that inspires people to visit here – a tram that runs the full length of the pier.

We headed over to Southport Pier from Lord Street to check out what all the fuss was about. As soon as we approached the historic structure, we saw the tram slowly making its way along the pier and noticed that this was a great way to take in the coastal scenery and look back towards Southport town centre.

I would highly recommend walking the full length of the pier and perhaps hop on the tram to return to the cafe or slot machines to try your luck on winning a small fortune!

Southport Pleasureland

Interested in experiencing a little fun on a Merseyside amusement park? Head over to Southport Pleasureland and sample some thrill rides before tasting stereotypical candy floss or ice cream! Unfortunately we didn’t pick the best day in terms of weather to visit Pleasureland but even from a distance you can see that this is a pretty spectacular park for all the family to enjoy.

Located in the heart of Princes Park, even if experiencing the thrills and spills of Pleasureland, you can relax by the boating lake and have a picnic taking in the coastal air.

Why visit Southport?

Southport is a gorgeous little gem along the North-Western coastline of England. Lord Street on its own offers visitors plenty to keep you occupied throughout the day but with the additional attractions, this is a spot for families or couples that want to take a day trip to the coast and sample stereotypical English fun!

Just like any other town in England, if you wait for the weather to be favorable you may be waiting a long time! Forget the inclement weather and head to Southport and have a good time. Walk along the beach, wander around Princes Park or just grab a 99 cornet and take in the atmosphere down the boulevard that is Lord Street.

Weekend Wanderlust

Experiencing Glory at Gleneagles – Ryder Cup 2014

If you have never been to a live sporting event, I would highly recommend considering the Ryder Cup simply because the two that I have been to are probably two of my favorite sporting experiences to date. After traveling 8 hours to Chicago in 2012 to watch the now infamous ‘Miracle at Medinah’ where Europe fought back from 10-6 heading into the final day to pull off a miraculous victory, we took our travels one step further by flying over to Scotland to watch the Ryder Cup 2014 event play out.

Golf is of course a competitive sport, but the Ryder Cup is completely different and like no other golf tournament that professional golfers participate in. This is the only time that the golfers actually create a team like environment and play for each other (in addition to their country and continent), rather than just playing for themselves.

What is the Ryder Cup?

Just to give you a brief insight into what the Ryder Cup is all about, let’s just say it’s where Europe and USA play against each other over three days of competitive golf and which ever team comes out with the most points wins! The Ryder Cup is held every two years and alternates venues between the two continents. The rest of the world participates against USA in the President’s Cup which follows a similar schedule but does not have the same prestige or reputation as the Ryder Cup.

Europe have had the clear edge in this competition over the last two decades so the Americans headed to Gleneagles, Scotland hoping to regain the Cup for the first time since 2008.

Our Journey to Gleneagles

Our trip to Scotland was eventful on its own, and that is even before seeing a tee shot hit by either Europe or USA. Leaving Jonesboro, Arkansas on Friday evening after work, we drove 8 hours to Atlanta, Georgia to get a flight Saturday lunch time. Our route took us from Atlanta to Toronto where we endured a 7 hour layover, before heading on to Copenhagen, Denmark. We stayed in Copenhagen for 2 days before flying to Manchester, England where we visited with my parents for 3 days.

A pretty eventful route, but given that the flight from Atlanta to Copenhagen was only $420 return it was pretty much a steal and well worth the ’round the houses’ approach to get there.

We finally drove from Manchester to Gleneagles on Thursday morning in time to experience the final practice day plus the opening ceremony.

Pre-Tournament Experience

The first thing to note when experiencing a Ryder Cup in Scotland is that the event organization is crucial in order for the whole experience to be positive. Full credit should be given to the Scottish Council and all organizations that were involved in the Ryder Cup 2014 event, because everything was smooth and efficiently planned out.

Pre-purchasing ‘Park and Ride’ tickets was mandatory and there were three locations to choose from, each around 20 miles from the Gleneagles golf course. Even though we opted for one park and ride location on the Thursday and a different location the next three days, we received passes for the Balado Park & Ride in Kinross (East of Gleneagles).

I should add that purchasing tickets for the Ryder Cup is not easy either as you have to go through a lottery ballet process in order to get them. The anti-fraud companies out there decided to take the ticketing process one step further by requiring all applicants to add their picture to the ticket which was printed on our season passes. Given that we were initially rejected and only received tickets during the ‘second release’, our choice of hotels was limited and we were forced to stay in Glasgow which is around 40 miles from Gleneagles, or a hour drive through the Scottish countryside.

Thursday – Final Practice Round

I would highly recommend heading to a practice round at any golf tournament, especially if you are not a huge golf fan and just want to go for the experience. Practice rounds are much more relaxed and you are even able to take your cameras to take as many pictures of your favorite golfers as you want!

We arrived at the Balado Park & Ride around 11:00AM and after passing through security (very much like airport security) we hopped on the double decker bus for the 40 minute shuttle to Auchterarder, the Scottish village home of Gleneagles. This was a really scenic drive through the Scottish valleys and at certain points it appeared that we were heading into the Scottish Highlands, but either way it was cool even though doing this every day got a little old.

After leaving the bus, we headed to the 17th green just in time to see the first group of Americans coming through. We were able to capture some really good pictures and we stood by the side of the tee box as the other American practice groups filtered through as they closed out their final practice rounds.

After watching this for a while, we headed over to the practice range to see some of the Europeans including Ian Poulter and Thomas Bjorn finishing up their practice sessions before the opening ceremony later that afternoon. We decided not to stay for the opening ceremony as we wanted to head over to St. Andrews AKA ‘The Home of Golf’ before darkness set in.

Friday – Opening Day of Ryder Cup 2014

With crowds in excess of 45,000 flocking to Gleneagles, we knew that an early start was needed in order to capture a great viewing spot for the morning fourballs. Rising early at 5:00AM we headed to Balado and arrived at Gleneagles just after the opening match had struck their tee-shots down the first fairway.

We spent the day enjoying the beautiful Scottish weather and being entertained first by the 7th green and later by the 17th. Both of these spots, in particular on the hill by the 7th were really great spots for spectators. Gleneagles in general is a great golf course for the paying public, with a number of elevated spots overlooking the course.

After a closely fought morning session that the US team edged, the afternoon foursomes belonged to Europe and they finished the day with a 5-3 lead.

Day 1 Scores

Morning Fourballs – Europe 1.5 USA 2.5

Afternoon Foursomes – Europe 3.5 USA 0.5

Overall – Europe 5 USA 3

Saturday – Europe Takes Control

Saturday’s play essentially mirrored that of Friday’s, with Europe continuing to dominate the afternoon session and ending the day in complete control. But it could have been so different had one or two putts dropped for the Americans, and the European pairings of Rose and Stenson and McDowell and Dubuisson had not been so dominant!

We were again very fortunate to experience great weather, at no point during the whole week did we encounter any rain at Gleneagles (I am sure that is a completely rare occurrence in Scotland!)

If USA is going to regain the Ryder Cup, they are quickly going to have to discover how to play foursomes golf. Whether this is because Americans generally are very individualistic and Europeans have a more team-oriented approach, I am not sure but either way Europe’s complete domination in this format was the clear difference between the two teams. Over the two days, Europe won this format 7-1.

Day 2 Scores

Morning Fourballs – Europe 1.5 USA 2.5

Afternoon Foursomes – Europe 3.5 USA 0.5

Overall – Europe 10 USA 6

Sunday – Glory at Gleneagles

Arriving in Auchterarder early Sunday morning, I was immediately thinking back to arriving at Medinah two years earlier and the thoughts of an improbable comeback taking place. Would we be in for a similar day today with the Americans making their own ‘miracle’ fightback or would Europe hold on a secure the 14 points required to retain the Ryder Cup? Four points from a possible twelve, surely it wouldn’t be too difficult!

The early play suggested otherwise with USA getting off to a fast start in several of the opening matches. Jordan Spieth continued his scintillating form despite his rookie status and was quickly 3 up on McDowell. Hunter Mahan was making a mockery of Justin Rose’s performance this week and was 4 up early in their mouthwatering encounter.

However, Europe continued to show why they are renowned as being gritty and having never-say-die attitudes to fight back in both of the aforementioned matches! With world number one Rory McIlroy destroying Rickie Fowler and Martin Kaymer sealing another point over Bubba Watson with a stunning chip-in at 16, it all came down to rookie Jamie Donaldson to seal the Ryder Cup for Europe with a breathtaking approach shot on 15 from 100 yards against Keegan Bradley.

When Bradley conceded his putt, all of Gleneagles erupted and this experience is worth the long trip alone! No other golf tournament would you experience the stadium like atmosphere that you do at the Ryder Cup and with European fans chanting “Olé, Olé, Olé” it really was a moment that Heather and I will cherish for a long time!

Day 3 Scores

Singles – Europe 6.5 USA 5.5

Overall – Europe 16.5 USA 11.5

Summary

So Heather and I have attended the last two Ryder Cups and on both occasions Europe have won. Are we a good omen? I hope so but either way we look forward to attending many more in the future starting with the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota!

People have asked us about the divide in our household between Europe and USA but I think I convinced Heather to support the Europeans in 2012 so we are both on the same page now! GO EUROPE!!
