Thanksgiving – What are you thankful for?

Arriving in the United States in 2006, I really had no idea what the whole fuss was about over Thanksgiving at the end of November every year. In reality I just thought this was just another holiday that was celebrated and folks used this as an excuse to be off work for a few days to celebrate with their family.

Maybe I still don’t appreciate the holiday season over here that I am not completely familiar with as much as US citizens do, but one thing this holiday does is make me think about what I am thankful for. I recently turned 30 and although I am an advocate of this just being a number, it’s interesting to look back over the previous decade and realize just how many things have taken place during my 20’s.

I graduated from the University of Manchester with my Bachelor’s degree, later graduated with my Master of Business Administration from Arkansas State University, got married to my wife and soul mate Heather, lived in four different places (two countries/three USA states) and the list goes on.

2013-Thanksgiving-1

I think it’s almost impossible to be thankful for everything that has taken place in the past and I am sure we are all guilty of taking some things for granted, but here is my shot at some things that spring to mind when I think about Thanksgiving.

  • I met Heather, my wife, in 2008, married in 2011 and formed the most amazing partnership every! She is the best thing that ever happened to me.
  • My mum and dad (and other family) have supported me with every decision that I made, in particular their unbelievable encouragement when I made the move out to USA in 2006.
  • Having a great job that I enjoy getting up every day for and helping students achieve their education goals.
  • Our love for travel and our ability to take so many trips every year.
  • Being able to play golf still as much as possible (trivial I know but it’s still a huge passion).
  • Our home – it’s only a townhouse/apartment but it’s ours and we have made it our home!
  • Proximity to Kandela Mexican Restaurant! One thing I am thankful for since I arrived in USA is finding out how good Mexican cuisine really is. Plus it’s even better when it’s authentic.
  • I am still able to follow the ups and downs of Ramsbottom United (my local football team in England) via Twitter.
  • I became an avid Apple fan! Despite stating several years ago that I would never become an Apple addict, I now own an iPod, iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air. I will let you decide for yourself (oh yes, and I plan on buying an iPad Mini later today on Black Friday!).
  • I appreciate England even more now that I don’t live there. Whenever we travel over there on our annual trip, I really enjoy visiting places I probably took for granted before.
  • The folks that I have met here in USA that have made me feel welcome and don’t discriminate that my nationality is different. Americans sometimes get a stereotype attached to them around the world but I can truly say they are a friendly bunch (for the most part right!).
  • That my Green Card and Visa process is coming to an end (hopefully will achieve US citizenship within the next few years!).
  • And finally, to repeat my first point, I am thankful for having Heather in my life who helps me every day become a better person and the fact that we have so much in common and enjoy life together!

When you think about Thanksgiving, what are you most thankful for?

It may be something obvious or something really trivial that most folks probably take for granted, but sit down for a few minutes and think about this.

Social Media – A New Era of Travel Interaction

What was your last Tweet? When did you last update your status on Facebook? Where did you last check-in at on Foursquare? Have you pinned any new cool things on Pinterest?

If you have answered all of the above questions, you are probably just like a mass of other people that are out there in the wonderful world of social media. It’s hard to think where we would be nowadays without the ability to interact and network with such a vast array of different people on social media outlets, but let’s be honest, social media has not been around very long and the boom that has occurred at such an exponential growth is astonishing.

Let’s look at some history and facts behind our leading social media platforms along with where A Brit and A Southerner utilizes these:

Twitter

Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and by July, the social networking site was launched. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million registered users as of 2012, generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion searches each day. (Wikipedia, 2013)

I will be the first to admit that Twitter was not my first rodeo in terms of social media platforms. I created an account a few years ago but found it difficult to get the urge to ‘tweet’ daily about the most trivial of things and I will even admit that I thought this to be pointless. I think the real reason behind this was my lack of knowledge and know-how as to how Twitter actually works. I was missing the point behind this platform and didn’t realize the wealth of knowledge that was out there.

Twitter

We are all familiar with the saying that the sum of all parts is greater than one individual, and this is enhanced in Twitter as whenever you have a question, there is so many different people out there that may have the answer to the most absurd or weird question that you have.

We opened our Twitter account for A Brit and A Southerner (@abritsoutherner) in October 2012 and immediately started following some great folks. Thanks to numerous different experienced Twitter travel bloggers, we have been able to expand our networks and at the time of this post we are almost at our milestone of 1000 Twitter followers. I am particularly satisfied with the progress we have made with this platform because we have found many new friends that are helping us develop A Brit and A Southerner into the travel hub we are looking for.

Facebook

Facebook

We are all probably familiar with the origin of Facebook but just as a brief recap, Facebook was founded in 2004 by Harvard graduate, Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates.

The website’s membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. Facebook now allows any users who declare themselves to be at least 13 years old to become registered users of the site. (Wikipedia, 2013)

There has been such a rapid development with Facebook and I would say that this has always been my personal favorite platform for social media. My personal page was setup I believe in 2006 whenever I first moved to the States, and I have since developed a business/social page for A Brit and A Southerner.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo-sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, and hobbies. (Wikipedia, 2013)

Pinterest is one of the newer social platforms around and was released to the public in March 2010. Heather is certainly the expert in the Pinterest domain and I will be the first to admit that I don’t frequent this site. We have found this to be particularly useful for A Brit and A Southerner as it allows us to categorize by continent basically our bucket list of places and things we want to visit.

UPDATE – We have since decided to utilize Heather’s personal page as she is primarily the main user of Pinterest.

If you are interested in following along with our boards on Pinterest, please check out her page located here – A Brit and A Southerner Pinterest

There are so many more social networks out there such as Google+, StumbleUpon etc. but we have found the above four to be the primary outlets for us to interact with our followers. With almost 1000 Twitter followers and over 550+ Facebook LIKES, we feel like we are heading in the right direction with social media.

The best way to get new people following is to interact with others and keep your social media platforms fresh with new material. Post photos, update statuses and provide links to your blogs so that everyone can keep updated with your work. It’s a great way to advertise your website/travel blog and without such media, it would be very difficult to get any sort of audience with such a saturated market of quality travel bloggers.

What social media platforms do you use and why?

Which are proving to be the most fruitful in terms of followers?

What is your favorite aspect of traveling and if you are a travel blogger, why did you decide to create your website?

I feel most at home when I am wandering. I love to travel and experience life to the fullest degree. I’m not exactly a travel blogger, but it plays into my overall marketing plan for my company pretty heavily.

How many continents have you visited?

Four

How many countries have you visited?

11-20

What is your favorite destination in the world and why?

Edinburgh, Scotland. It is probably my favorite destination because it’s where three of my best friends reside and I always feel so at home and calm when I’m there.

If money/time was no object and you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you travel to and why?

I couldn’t choose. I would just travel non-stop…which, consequently, is what I’m about to embark on next month since I have gotten to the point where my business will allow me to be location independent (the dream!).

Which of the following gadgets do you take on your travels?

Phone and Laptop

What is your preferred method of transport?

Air

Complete the following, “Everywhere I go, I visit….”

The bar. Obviously. 😉 But seriously, I like to get to know the locals. Drinking seems to be the universal language.

Here is your chance to sell yourself and your website! Tell us some more information about yourself, what your travel philosophies & future plans are and anything else that people may find interesting to read about…

My story starts like most people who begin travel blogging and freelancing: disgruntled cubicle employee with a predilection for traversing the world decides to break out of the mold and pursue something that they are passionate about. And so Social Nomad was born. So far, I have spent about 7 years working in creative and online marketing, with a strong focus on social media, graphic design and web programming. I have done work for many small and independent companies, as well as some big ones: Canon, DeBeers, Passion Parties and Walters Golf and have had proven track record success with all of them. Aside from that, I have also spent much time devoted to seeing new places and as much of the world as I possibly can.

What can I say? I have a wandering spirit that doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. I conceptualized Social Nomad to, not only be the front end for my independent consulting but to also share stories, photos, video and tips from my travels…and, as of August 18, 2013, it will be my full time job.

5 Things To Do At The Airport

If you have watched Tom Hanks performing in the JFK based “The Terminal”, you will certainly understand the importance of using your imagination to pass time! We have all been in the situation of having to wait at the airport terminal either having to hang around for a connecting flight or due to weather delays etc.

So what can we do to pass what sometimes could be several hours before we can head on to our next destination? The following gives a brief insight into the top 5 pastimes that travelers tend to do whilst waiting (please comment if you have any other suggestions):

Shopping

Most airports have a variety of shops available for avid travelers to visit. Many of these stores are sometimes local to the airport in terms of the merchandise available. i.e. If you are at O’Hare airport in Chicago, you are likely to find Bears, Blackhawks and Cubs memorabilia though there are generally many other options available. Some of the larger global airports have so many shops across their various terminals that they are more like a shopping mall.

shops

The airport terminal is the perfect location for leading designers to showcase their products especially given the thousands of tourists and business travelers that pass through 365 days of the year.

Wine and Dine

All airports have various dining options, ranging from basic deli options to more lavish three course meal dining locations. Use your time wisely to eat at the airport terminal rather than relying on the plane food which although in many cases is edible, generally leaves a lot to be desired given there are few options available (even if you travel in business class).

dining

Visiting a Chilis or sports bar can be relaxing as you can pick away at an appetizer and sip on a beer whilst watching the latest sports action. Airports are more expensive and you certainly shouldn’t compare prices to what you would regularly pay. Merchants know they can increase the price ceiling because travelers will pay the prices to satisfy their needs.

Research your Destination

Unless you are the perfect planner and well organized individual, you are likely to be in the same position as most travelers lacking sufficient knowledge to know exactly what you are going to do at your final destination. Use the time at the airport to research things to do, places to eat and probably most importantly, how to get around in your destination. Will you be renting a car, using public transportation or simply staying at the all-inclusive resort? All these are questions that need to be answered and preparing before you get there can certainly save you hassle when you should be relaxing and focusing on enjoying your vacation.

boingo

Airports are fitted with wi-fi, some you are fortunate to receive free wireless access which is just a great way to perform research while others you have to pay to use the internet service (Boingo is a good example of a wi-fi provider in the airport). One suggestion that may be useful is researching the airport before you travel and see what internet connections are available and some offer the opportunity to pre-purchase wi-fi time for cheaper than at the airport. Tracking travel blogs, researching websites and checking out the latest weather or all good ways to spend your time.

If the Internet is not your preferred medium, visit one of the airport news vendors and look at purchasing either a travel book of your destination or maybe a magazine advertising an array of locations is a better read. Whichever works best for you, use this time to plan your schedules!!

Exercise

Airports really can prove to be great places for getting some exercise before a potentially long haul flight. Not only are you gaining exercise, you can also see some interesting artifacts in airports. Sculptures, wall art and modern architecture are generally prevalent throughout leading global airports and many offer the opportunity to learn the history and heritage within the city/country you are currently based.

airport_travellers

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport is a great airport to walk several miles as there are numerous terminals connected by the underground train, at the same time offering pedestrians the option to walk parallel to the tracks. Combining shopping, exercise and expanding your knowledge of a region, walking is certainly a great way of passing some time.

Take a Nap

Some people are fortunate to be able to sleep when flying. Unfortunately I am not one of these folks and I am sure there are plenty out there who have the same feelings towards flying on a plane. I am not sure if it due to comfort or whether I am always wanting to know what is going on, where we are etc. I don’t know but waiting around in the terminal is a great opportunity to take a quick cat nap!

sleeping-in-airport-bench

I am not suggesting you take the Hanks approach of setting up your bed in the terminal by moving chairs around, but there are generally locations in a terminal that are quieter than you can either curl up in a corner against a wall or lounge in a comfortable chair. Many airports have sleep areas where travelers can take a quick nap, so please take advantage of this if you are like me and struggle to doze off when flying at 30000 feet.

McGuires Irish Pub in Destin Florida

One of the great aspects of traveling is sampling different dining experiences and trying a range of cuisines that may be very diverse from what your diet generally entails. We certainly fall into this category and enjoy tasting new foods along with re-visiting some of those old, favorite restaurants that you found on previous trips.

large_2092145474

Our trip to Destin, Florida last week saw us try several different restaurants, some we had previously been acquainted with, while others were new. The first night we stayed in Destin, we decided to return to one of our favorite spots in Destin – McGuire’s Irish Pub. I have to admit that both Heather and myself have a fond love of Irish cuisine so anytime we travel, one of our main tendencies is to locate somewhere that is stereotypically Irish.

origin_2760744413

This is our third trip to Florida together and each time we have sampled the great food on offer at McGuire’s Irish Pub. Is the food really stereotypical of Ireland? Well, it’s pretty close and the menu certainly favors Irish cuisine though if you are a die-hard American eater you can still find something to satisfy your tastebuds.

Our top recommendation from the menu is actually a starter and is the cheapest item on the whole menu! The infamous Senate Bean Soup sets you back a mere 18 cents each (as long as you purchase an entree) but I can honestly say that this is one of the best soups I have tasted. Throw in a loaf of bread topped with delectable honey butter and this is a real treat to start your experience at McGuire’s. The problem is that by the time you have finished your soup and bread, you are pretty well stuffed and probably need a break before trying one of the main dishes.

large_6115335162

If you opt for the Irish Wake drink, you will be happy to know that you can take away a souvenir mug  which will provide great memories of your experience here.

We have tried different options each time we have visited McGuire’s but this time we decided to opt for the Fish and Chips and Steak and Mushroom pie. Heather admittedly was a little disappointed by the Fish and Chips, it certainly wasn’t what she anticipated but I think that’s a combination of high expectations and the fact she was pretty full after our starter. The Steak and Mushroom pie was very good despite being a little over-facing with the amount of puff-pastry used for the crust. Either way, both of these are good choices along with a variety of other options.

large_3069087501

Aside from the food in McGuire’s the atmosphere is really cool. The pub style setting is of course appealing to myself but I like how they have allowed everyone to be a part of the infrastructure by pinning dollar bills signed by guests around every part of the inside. There literally has to be millions of dollars scattered around the interior but it makes for a cool looking pub. We were also treated to a local bagpipe performance which earned a well-deserved rapturous applause from guests.

Leaving McGuire’s you have to visit the souvenir shop that has a range of products available from T-Shirts to local wines and other liquor.

large_3129692245

If you have never sampled Irish food, you don’t know what you are missing! Traveling to Destin, Florida may not be at the top of your ‘must-see’ places but if you are ever in this part of Florida you would be well advised to pay McGuire’s a visit and sample their excellent food and dining experience.

What are your favorite Irish restaurants in USA?

Willow’s British Tea Room – Panama City

I have to admit that one of the things that I miss about England is being able to wander along a street and pop in to a local tearoom for lunch or afternoon snack. Ok, so in America everyone visits Starbucks or the like if they want something equivalent to this but there is something about those quaint little village tearooms in English hamlets that make you feel homely.

We have traveled to various cities around the States and up until visiting Panama City on our recent trip to Florida, there has been nothing like what I am used to seeing back in England. After deciding to take the hour drive from Destin to Panama City, we were a little disappointed at what we found on arriving in downtown Panama City.

The main street looked similar to what you would expect in an old US town but I was soon attracted to a Union Jack flag swaying in the distance at the bottom of the street. After telling Heather we should drive down and investigate further, we saw a quaint little tearoom called ‘Willow’s British Tea Room‘. We decided to take a look at the menu in the window and after a few moments we immediately decided we had to go in and sample the food.

We were greeted by a friendly girl who I immediately knew was not a Florida native, rather she was from the homeland (we later found out that she was from Norfolk and moved over to the States about 18 months ago) and she took our drink order. The menu was ‘so British’ with the main highlights for snacks being a Cornish Beef Pastie and Sausage Roll with a side of good old HP sauce.

blogger-image-1445203314

We opted for both of these British classics and we were certainly not disappointed by the quality of the food. The Cornish pastie was ‘home-made’ and definitely a recommended choice and I know that Heather enjoyed her selection.

Below is a copy of the menu that gives you an insight into what is on offer here.

blogger-image-1436456190

I wanted to give a little advertisement to this great little establishment along the Emerald Coastline. If you are traveling in the vicinity of Panama City, please go ahead pop by the Willow’s British Tea Room and sample their British style cuisine – you won’t be left disappointed!

Top 5 Reasons to fly Southwest Airlines

If you are following us on Twitter, you may have noticed a Tweet I released indicating that we have finally achieved our goal of reaching Companion Pass status. I will get into a little more detail later in this post about what this involves and means, but for anyone that has never flown or even researched Southwest Airlines, I hope this post gives you a better idea as to what advantages they have to offer over other leading airlines.

The airline industry is undoubtedly competitive so for an airline to grab that all important ‘competitive advantage’, they have to find niches in the market that will attract customers. Southwest Airlines is relatively new in comparison to other airline powerhouses such as American, Delta or US Airways so they have to look at other ways to gain a reputation rather than just ‘long standing’ support from regular flyers.

Here are our top 5 reasons why you should consider using Southwest Airlines for your next domestic US flight.

Cheaper Fares

Who doesn’t want to take advantage of cheap flights? Over the last few years, airline tickets have skyrocketed and it appears that long gone are the days where you can fly domestically for less than $100 round trip. Well….not necessarily! Southwest Airlines frequently provides blockbuster sales from various hubs across the States with flights as low as $45 one way. We are fortunate to now have two relatively close hubs to Jonesboro, Arkansas. Little Rock, AR and starting this week, Memphis, TN now have direct flights to various destinations across USA.

sw memphis-4

Free Checked Bag(s)

Even if you are a frequent flyer and believe that you are able to pack everything in to you carry-on bag, how nice would it be if you could check a bag with you airline and not have to pay an extra $20-$120 per bag each way? Well, Southwest Airlines are the perfect airline for you because they give you not only one but TWO free checked bags when you use them as your preferred airline.

sw memphis-3

This is a huge incentive especially for families who travel on vacations with kids and need to take plenty of luggage with them. 2 bags per person – put that into perspective for a family of 4 and that is potentially 8 free bags and when you do the math on this, that could be a saving of several hundred dollars!

I am impressed with this ‘add-on’ because combining this with generally cheaper airfares, it is making Southwest a leader of low-cost airlines.

No Seat Assignment

You may think that having no seat assignment would be a drawback but I like to think of this being advantageous. How many times do you book a flight and then try to assign yourself a seat, only to find that all the seats are reserved or you have to pay extra for ‘extra leg room’ etc? Well, you don’t have to worry about this with Southwest, all you have to do is ensure that you are awake 24 hours prior to your departure time and check-in online to get assigned a group number. The earlier group number that you get, the more choice you will have when you walk on to the plane.

Companion Pass

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Companion Pass is what inspired me to write this post today. On Sunday, November 3rd, we received confirmation from Southwest that we had achieved Companion Pass status for the rest of 2013 and the 2014 calendar year. So what does this mean? Here are the key benefits of a Companion Pass:

  • A companion of your choice can fly with you for FREE (Yes you read that correctly!) whenever you take a flight to a chosen Southwest destination.
  • You can book qualifying Companion Pass flights using either money or existing points that you have.
  • A companion can be added to existing flight reservations, so you don’t need to add the companion at the time of booking the initial flight.

So how do you achieve Companion Pass status? There are currently two ways of doing this. The first way is to complete 100 qualifying Southwest Flights in a calendar year which in reality is difficult unless you are a frequent flyer and that would still equate to about 2 flights per week. The other option, which is what we achieved, is to accumulate 110,000 points using a variety of methods. Southwest partners with Chase to make the Rapid Rewards credit card options a great way to start. Frequently they will have an offer that when you open a credit card with them, after spending the first $2000 within the first three months, you will earn a bonus 50k points which DO count towards Companion Pass status.

sw memphis-1

Above is the Tweet that I posted on Monday confirming that our Rapid Rewards account achieved 110k points. We earned the 50k points at the end of July so in reality we have earned 60k more since then. This initially may seem like a lot of expenses but here are a few ways we have found to maximize your spending and achieve the ultimate goal:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal – Keep checking back here daily or weekly as there are always companies that offer double and even triple points.
  • Teleflora – Unfortunately we have just found out that as of 11/20/13, they are no longer offering the deal that we took advantage of (1000 points for each transaction of at least $30).
  • E-Rewards and E-Miles – Take a bunch of surveys and basically get free money. For every $25 you earn in survey money on e-rewards, you can convert this to 500 RR points.

Partnership with Airtran

You may be aware that Southwest Airlines acquired Airtran Airways in 2011. This merger is still ongoing and of course we are not going to see the maximum benefits of this until everything in the process is complete. However, we are already noticing some benefits that we can take advantage of as travelers.

sw memphis

Whenever you book on Southwest.com, you now have the ability to book flights to Airtran hubs. Many of these are now available ‘directly’ through Southwest while some still require you to be redirected through the Airtran portal. Those that make you redirect unfortunately will not allow you to use your Southwest accrued points or Companion Pass status but reports suggest by the end of 2014, all flight connections and bookings will be made directly through Southwest.com.

Do you fly Southwest Airlines?

What are your opinions on their customer service and incentives?

Interview – Merete Brown (Outside the Limits)

Today’s Sunday Social travel interview features Merete Brown from Outside the Limits who has graciously given her time to speak with us and help us learn a little more about her travel thoughts and website.

Please feel free to comment, ask questions and connect with Merete using her various social media fronts listed below.

We would like to give a special THANK YOU to Merete for taking time to interview with us!

What is your favorite aspect of traveling and if you are a travel blogger, why did you decide to create your website?

My favorite aspect of traveling is figuring out where to go and pushing myself out of my comfort zone into the unknown. I love the feeling I get when I travel to a new place and need to figure out how to get from point A to point B. It’s like figuring out a puzzle, especially if there’s a language barrier.

I decided to create the blog Outside the Limits, because I wanted to inspire people to explore all the amazing natural places often right outside city limits even if it’s not that far from home. I also wanted to inspire people to push themselves outside of their comfort zones, because if you do, it often results in great experiences. Since I love photography so much, I wanted to create a poster board, so to speak, to highlight places to visit through photographic essays.

How many continents have you visited?

Two

How many countries have you visited?

11-20

What is your favorite destination in the world and why?

That’s a tough question but if I had to pick one place, I would say St. Kitts in the West Indies. I love the ocean and St. Kitts is beautiful with the Caribbean Sea bordering one side and the Atlantic on the other side. When I was there several years ago, I also loved it because it wasn’t overrun by tourists. The island felt genuine. Although I enjoy cruising, the Caribbean islands often cater to the cruise ships tourists and at times the atmosphere on the islands can become a little hokey. But St. Kitts felt like a true getaway, not over commercialized and still a sanctuary in paradise.

If money/time was no object and you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you travel to and why?

There are two destinations at the top of my travel bucket list right now: Machu Picchu in Peru and Iceland. I’ve always had a fascination with Machu Picchu because of its origin and location in the Andes Mountains. I can’t wait to hike the Inca Trail! I also really want to visit Iceland because for one, it’s a beautiful country, but also for two, I hope to see the northern lights someday.

Which of the following gadgets do you take on your travels?

Camera, Phone and Tablet (iPad, Kindle etc.)

What is your preferred method of transport?

Walk

Complete the following, “Everywhere I go, I visit….”

Everywhere I go, I visit a gift shop to pick up a Christmas ornament. My husband and I started collecting ornaments to add to our Christmas tree each year, so someday we can look back and reflect on all the amazing places we traveled to!

Here is your chance to sell yourself and your website! Tell us some more information about yourself, what your travel philosophies & future plans are and anything else that people may find interesting to read about…

Well I’m a law graduate who decided life was too short to spend all my time doing something I didn’t really enjoy, so instead of pursuing law further, I dug up some of my skills from majoring in Broadcast Journalism in undergraduate and decided to do the two things I really enjoy: writing and photography. I’ve always loved to travel and I also love everything about the outdoors. And so, Outside the Limits was born. Although the focus of Outside the Limits is on the outdoors, parks, etc., the blog also highlights interesting cities and other regions to travel to. I really like to tell stories through photos, so people can get a true sense of what a place looks like and decide if it’s somewhere they can get excited about traveling to.

There are so many beautiful places in the world. If only I could travel to all of them! 🙂 I would say my travel philosophy is to “just go.” It doesn’t matter how far you travel or whether you even have a destination. Some of the best trips I’ve had were largely spontaneous. I just hopped in the car and headed towards a tentative destination, unsure if I would end up detouring somewhere. But the most important thing is to just go. It doesn’t have to be far from home. Get out and experience new places, meet new people and see new things.

Also, to quote the blog’s slogan “Discover, Explore, Record – Live by Venturing Outside the Limits,” I think those simple words really encapsulate how to travel. Find a place to travel outside of your usual locale, explore and record your adventure in some way to always remember your experience. It’s easy to get swept up in the moment while traveling, but if you remember to keep some sort of record of your travels, it will likely be very valuable to you down the road (if it was a good experience of course).

Finally, although I love spontaneous trips, I’m also generally a planner when I’m traveling further from home. I like to spend time researching cool places to stay, the best deals and interesting things to see. Sometimes it’s fun to construct a certain image of a place before I travel there and then see how the image relates to real life. My next major stop is San Diego, Los Angeles and Joshua National Park. I’m planning to drive a loop between the three places. (I love loops! 🙂 ) I’ve wanted to visit Joshua National Park for a while now to photograph the landscape. I’m also attending a National Geographic Seminar in San Diego on storytelling through photography. It should be a great trip! Thanks for inviting me to participate in your survey! Please let me know if you have questions!

Top 5 Things to do in Destin Florida

Throughout my childhood years our typical annual vacation spot was Destin, Florida due to it’s relative proximity to Arkansas and of course because of the gorgeous beaches on offer. Everything that Destin has to offer is suited to it’s reputation as being a tourist destination, from the shopping to the restaurants to the  nightlife. With so many things to see and do in this stretch of Florida’s unheralded coastline, here are my suggested top 5 things to do in Destin.

For anyone unaware of Destin’s exact location, it is located in the northwest corner of the state in the Florida Panhandle, not too far from Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. Anyone that enjoys relaxing on the beach will enjoy Destin as much as any other Florida type vacation, though one major difference between here and the likes of Miami or Orlando are the prices which are generally much cheaper than further south. Hotels are great value for money or if renting a self-accommodated condo is more your thing there are always great deals available if you do enough research for a week long stay or longer.

Trust me, if you visit and experience each one of these, you will certainly not be disappointed and you will be ready for your next trip back to the Florida Panhandle.

Sandy White Beaches

Throughout the town of Destin the coastline is gorgeous and unlike any other, although I know many people will say that sandy white beaches are everywhere. If you want quiet, sunny and the perfect sandy beach with a warm ocean from the gulf in close proximity, then Destin is definitely the place you need to be for at least a week. There are public access parking lots that you can park and head down to the beach or if you are staying at a condo or hotel with beach access then you will also have the option in purchasing the lounging chairs which to be honest will enhance your beach experience.

However, these frequently come at a substantial cost and it may be cheaper to purchase elsewhere either prior to your trip if you are driving or you can purchase them from any of the souvenir shops and most department stores around the town.

McGuires Irish Pub

When you walk in McGuire’s the atmosphere is not like your typical Floridian restaurant  its much better equipped with a bar, music and a gift shop! The booths in McGuire’s are high back pews, which adds to the character of this Irish pub. when you walk in one other thing that you should notice is that the walls are covered with $1 bills, it became customary for travelers to write a note and sign a dollar bill and then staple it to the ceiling or wall.

Food is amazing, authentic Irish pub experience all the way around and they even brew there own beer.  I would recommend ordering the Senate bean soup for $.18 cents it is incredible, Sheperd’s pie is very authentic and tasty. Everything here will be amazing, McGuire’s will not let you down.

Baytowne Wharf

The Baytowne Wharf area is a great area to walk around and investigate some local shops along with an array of boutiques, restaurants and jam-packed nightlife. The Wharf has a village style look and feel though it’s location by the seafront provides a wonderful scenic opportunity for tourists to experience the local atmosphere. This beautiful setting is a perfect spot to spend an afternoon relaxing or stroll along the front during the evening as the spectacular lighting reflects into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the intriguing aspects of the Baytowne Wharf is an old tree located in the center which is always lit in the evening but also provides plenty of historical stories giving it’s age and perilous location in the center of the rest of the village. Anyone interested in taking a cruise around the Gulf of Mexico or fishing with one of the locals can embark on such a journey from the Baytowne Wharf.

Silver Sands Outlet Mall

We have visited several outlet malls through the United States of America and Silver Sands is certainly in the top few in terms of variety, discounted prices and overall layout. With names ranging from Nike Factory Outlet for the athletic type, Bose and Sony for the tech folks and Coach for the girl in your life, there is definitely something here for everyone.

Along with over 120 outlet stores, there are several restaurants and bakeries along the way for a quick snack which for anyone willing to walk all the stores will be a requirement at the end of a long day. Ample free parking is a bonus and the mall’s proximity to many of the leading hotel and resort chains is a definite advantage.

Souvenir Shops

Anyone who visits Florida will face the prospect of visiting countless souvenir and beach stores. Although they are pretty much all the same in terms of their product range, each one is a little different in terms of layout and it is certainly a worthwhile experience to visit even if you leave without anything.

Beach stores are a great way to save money rather than renting beach chairs and towels as you can generally pick these up for much cheaper than at the hotel chains. Many will still visit the likes of Wal-Mart for the best deals, but for pure convenience the beach side stores are the places to go.

Top 5 In Flight Necessities

Following on from our Sunday Brunch Travel Chat (#SBTC) with Phoebe (@ShortRoad2Happy) and fellow travel bloggers, we decided to write about our ‘In Flight Necessities’.

We are all culprits of overpacking I am sure but when it comes to the crunch of packing those essential items for your carry on bag for that long haul flight, what do you take with you and cannot bare to leave behind?

During Sunday’s discussion, one of the questions was related to how our in-flight necessities have changed over time and we certainly believe that with the development of technology and personal needs, our opinions on what we need most has changed dramatically. Long gone are the days of a hard back book and ear plugs, now we are all checking out the latest iTunes apps or Android market for something that will help pass the time on a flight.

But, this is just our opinion and I am sure there are many still out there that still prefer to remain old-school and take their favorite book with them. This is the beauty of travel and all of our needs and desires are so different.

As I mentioned, our needs are changing all the time but as of today, Tuesday October 29, 2013, this is what we consider to be our 5 most important in-flight necessities. What are your most important items that you have to take with you?

iPad or Other Tablet Device

large_5052936803

When Apple released the first iPad in 2010, I will be the first to admit that I was not sold on this product. I was an avid laptop user (and still am!) but I was not an Apple or Mac user. The look and feel of Apple products was great but I couldn’t justify the cost of this product line. However, after falling for the Apple bug and purchasing the iPad 2 in 2011, I became well and truly hooked.

Heather and I both have iPad’s – one thing I will admit is that there is nothing much noticeably different between any of the iPad generations (we have a 2nd and 3rd generation) but these are absolutely wonderful assets when we travel. iPad’s are perfect replacements for books and/or magazines. You can preload your tablet with plenty of reading material prior to flying, purchase apps or download from a myriad of free apps and add your favorite music and videos for viewing later.

Whenever I consider the main attractions of an iPad or other tablet for that matter, I think about flexibility and versatility. This is what these offer over anything we have seen in the past. The ability to contain a plethora of products and ideas in one device is truly impressive and something that makes flying much more enjoyable. I am sure we are going to see the iPad continue to evolve, especially given that we have recently heard about the release of the new iPad Air which will be much lighter and efficient.

Camera

Taking your camera onboard is not a necessity for the flight itself but for any aspiring travel blogger or photographer, taking your DSLR or point and shoot camera on a trip is imperative! Even when we are traveling long distance and check a bag, we never want to check anything with substantial value and our camera certainly falls into this category.

Discussion on Sunday led to us speaking about how travelers and tourists are shifting from using cameras to the use of smartphone technology and the built in cameras. Heather admitted to being guilty of using her iPhone 5 to take pictures and I have to say that smartphone cameras are developing and rapidly bridging the gap with regular cameras. However, this still does not take away from the fact that a smartphone does not have the same capabilities as an expensive DSLR or even point and shoot camera.

Laptop

An iPad is great for most things but I am still not convinced that it can replace a laptop for many important business needs or travel blogging necessities. When writing blog posts or drafts, I still prefer using the web browser (if Internet connectivity is available) or Microsoft Word to put together my posts for our site. I recently purchased a 11″ MacBook Air and feel that this is the perfect travel companion for a laptop given it’s sleek size, lightweight nature and featuring the new Haswell processor has great battery life! What more could a travel blogger right?

Hydration

Prior to boarding the plane, we usually like to grab a bottle of water or soda so that we can keep hydrated rather than having to wait for the in-flight service. For the most part, drinks on the plane are sufficient but it is always nice to have an extra bottle handy in case of emergencies (if you need to take some last minute medication such as sleeping pills) or to re-hydrate after back to back connections.

Headphones

If you are using either your iPad, Laptop or other device to listen to music or watch a movie, the likelihood is that you will need a good pair of headphones. Most airlines will provide a free pair especially if you are a traveling overseas but the quality of these, if you are flying economy, is not particularly good. I have tried the ‘over the ear’ headphones and have never been a big fan of these!

Heather continues to ask me if I think she should buy a pair of Beats but I personally prefer the in-ear options and I have a couple of pairs that I am comfortable with. Koss and Sony are two brands that I have used recently that I am happy with but there are various out there that can suit your needs. Everyone is different and we all have our own personal preferences.

There you have my list of the Top 5 In-Flight Necessities. I am sure that if Heather put together her list, from a female perspective they would be very different as will all of your responses but I think that these give a good indication as to where many of us are heading with the advancement in technology.

What are your in-flight necessities?
