Nashville is full of music, friendly faces and several must-see attractions that make up this thriving city. We have been fortunate to visit Nashville on various occasions and each time we stumble across another hidden gem that just adds to the beauty of a destination known as “Music City.” Trying to find the best places to take pictures in Nashville might seem like a daunting task but hopefully, this guide will give you a few ideas as to where you can capture that perfect shot and create lifelong memories along the way.

Whether you are thinking about the infamous “Batman” building or the gorgeous Grand Ole Opry, we know that capturing those perfect shots is something we all strive for. Best Places to Take Pictures in Nashville

It’s critical that you plan effectively before taking any trip, especially if you focused on finding the best photo spots. A city like Nashville can be extremely overwhelming, particularly with the urban sprawl that is apparent with a number of neighborhoods scattered far and wide from the downtown area. Of course, it goes without saying that ensuring you have the right photography equipment with you is another critical component!

The Equipment

There are several ways to take a photograph and no two are the same. I don’t believe that you need an expensive camera for a great photo. The best parts of any photo are ones that are in focus and it is pleasing to the eye.

We use a Nikon D7100 camera with either a 35mm lens or an 18-200mm lens. We both also have iPhones (7 Plus) that make some situations a little better than carrying a heavy DSLR around. Extra accessories that might be needed for some of these shots include a tripod to keep those images in focus, particularly if you looking to shoot night photography.

Depending on what the subject is, you can also use a filter but it’s certainly not needed for all shots.

Nashville Downtown Skyline

Taking pictures of any skyline can be mesmerizing. Be prepared to stay focused on the task of taking a great photo. Nashville can be proud to have a spectacular skyline that is easily accessible.

In order to get the best angle visit the Cumberland River Pedestrian Bridge, located next to the Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans. There is a path that you can walk along the river, then take the steps or elevator up to the bridge that will take you across the river on to Broadway.

Skyline of Nashville

For night-time photos, you want to make sure you definitely have a tripod as the shutter speed will be much lower. We used a 35mm lens and we had our ISO set to 100 and our aperture was set at f/5.6 with a 15-second shutter speed.

Ryman Auditorium

No trip to Nashville is complete without a stop to the Ryman Auditorium, also known as the original location of the Grand Ole Opry between 1943 and 1974. If you love architecture, visiting the Ryman is a no-brainer. A classic beauty with so much history and probably one of the most interesting stories. As the Carnegie Hall of the South, it is conveniently located just around the corner from Broadway.

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge

Many visitors to the Ryman are unaware of the hidden door inside the auditorium that leads to an alley behind the world famous Tootsies Bar. Country artists that were fortunate enough to perform at the Ryman Auditorium, would use this door to pay Tootsies a visit to enjoy a drink and surprise locals and visitors alike with a special show. Be sure to check out the “Ryman Alley” as you never know who you could run into!

Printer’s Alley

Nashville is home to many iconic alleys, one of the most well known is Printer’s Alley, which at one time was a booming publishing industry but now is a nightclub district. This thriving alley started when it was illegal to consume alcohol in Nashville, while today it has an eclectic blend of clubs and entertainment.

Music City Walk of Fame

Take a walk around the legendary Walk of Fame and see all of the Country Music Hall of Fame legends from Little Jimmy Dickens to Miranda Lambert. This iconic attraction started in 2006 and is constantly being updated to add the rich history of country music and the dedication to the stars. If you cross the street from the Country Music Hall of Fame you will start your journey along the Nashville Walk of Fame.

Bicentennial Capitol Mall Park

In 1996, Bicentennial Mall was opened to help commemorate Tennessee becoming a state but it is so much more. This park contains waterfalls, an amphitheater, and an opportunity for visitors to take “a walkthrough” guide to Tennessee history. The State Capitol, as well as a farmers market borders the park to make it very accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Bicentennial Mall is just a short walk from downtown Nashville and certainly feasible for those that prefer to get around on foot.

The Grand Ole Opry

If you are looking for the best places to pictures in Nashville, you have to be willing to step away from the downtown area and travel to the area that includes the gorgeous Gaylord Hotel, Opry Mills Mall and of course, the Grand Ole Opry itself. If you visit the Ryman Auditorium as well as the present day Grand Ole Opry, you will have a much better understanding as to why Nashville is called Music City.

I decided to make this photo black and white while editing because I felt that it captured more of the essence of the Opry. You can choose based on your own opinions which photos are better for either color vs. black/white but I personally think that any time you are trying to depict a historical reference, black and white offers a great perspective.

Parthenon

Did you know that Nashville was home to a full-scale replica of the Parthenon? Located in the heart of Centennial Park with paths and open areas for picnics and sports, there is something for everyone here.

Inside the Parthenon is an art museum which for only $6 is a real bargain. Once you enter you will see the various construction stages of the Parthenon along with present day art exhibits. The self-guided tour inside the Parthenon culminates on the top floor where you are presented with the gorgeous sight of a massive… Sorry, you will just have to check it out to see for yourself!

Customs House

In 1877, President Hayes dubbed the Customs House in Nashville as a “national treasure” as it symbolized the end of Southern Reconstruction after the Civil War. Today, it is privately owned and rented out to tenants, which is a major step in restoring pieces of Nashville’s history.

Customs House

The Customs House is definitely one of the most attractive pieces of architecture in downtown Nashville. Take a short walk along Broadway away from the river and you will arrive at this spectacular sight.

Belle Meade Plantation

Belle Meade Plantation was once a thriving stud farm that was able to claim the prestige of having every horse that participated in the Kentucky Derby until 2011 trace their bloodline to this Nashville attraction. Today, it is a museum and definitely not to be overlooked when planning your Nashville itinerary.

In addition to all the history, there is also a wine tasting available at the end of the tour that is included in the price of your ticket. The wine is only available and made on site, so be prepared for a unique experience tasting a variety of delicious wine flavors.

The Belle Meade Plantation tour is certainly a unique and “different” experience to anything else in Nashville, so be sure to add this to your itinerary if you are looking for some alternative things to do in Music City.

Broadway

I don’t think I have ever met anyone that has been to Nashville and didn’t visit the main strip downtown. Broadway has several nightclubs and honky tonks that will keep you busy until the early hours of the morning.

There are several iconic stops but my personal favorite is Ernest Tubb’s Record Shop. Opening in 1947, the country star opened the shop and it is still serving locals and visitors alike to this day.

From New York City to Los Angeles and from Miami to Seattle, the United States is blessed to have a number of diverse cities waiting to be explored. We all know that Americans have very limited vacation time so we want to share a collaborative guide on the best cities to visit in the USA for an amazing weekend. Weekend travel is something we thrive on and we are constantly encouraging people we know to utilize their weekends more productively. Do you realize just how much you can see in 48 hours?

best cities to visit in the usa

We are delighted to collaborate with some of the best experts in the travel industry as we look at 20 awesome cities across the United States. I am sure you already have a favorite US city in mind and of course, a guide to the best cities in the States wouldn’t be the same without the likes of NYC and Boston. However, what about some of the lesser-known cities that you may not have considered visiting?

Hopefully, after reading this guide, you will be inspired to add some of these urban areas to your travel plans in the near future.

Best Cities to Visit in the USA

Here is an interactive map of the cities we will be covering throughout this post. We are delighted to provide such a diverse array of cities that cover the majority of the United States. There are many other awesome cities that we didn’t cover but if you are visiting from overseas or simply want to plan a road trip, I think this is a great list to choose from!
[show-map id=’6′]

Let’s start with our own contribution to this post and undoubtedly our favorite city in the United States (and possibly the world!) – the one and only ultimate 24-hour destination, NEW YORK CITY!

New York City

It’s not called the ultimate 24-hour city of the world for nothing and we can well and truly attest that a weekend in New York City is an amazing experience! We have been fortunate to take several trips to the Big Apple for a weekend (or long weekend) and this is ample time to explore the beautiful borough of Manhattan.

best cities to visit in the usa

Of course, you could quite easily spend much more time…as long as you have a large enough wallet to handle the retail therapy you will likely experience at some point along 5th Avenue!

new york city

Whether you are visiting New York City for the first time to explore the infamous attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Central Park, or you are returning as a frequent visitor, the Big Apple will never cease to amaze you!

empire state building new york city

Sure, it’s not for everyone and there will always be critics of this city but honestly, it’s one of those iconic cities around the world you just have to experience for yourselves. Don’t ever let anyone judge NYC for you!

Austin

Great weather, huge events, and amazing food continue to bring people from all around the world to visit Austin. At the center of the city is the largest state capitol in the US and is worth a visit, especially if you take a free guided tour.

Leaving the capital and heading south will take you to Austin’s well know 6th Street. Here you with find bar after bar, many with live bands playing, contributing to Austin’s reputation as the live music capital of the world.

austin texas

If you come in the summer time, it may take some effort to stay cool. You can stay downtown and swim in the naturally fed Barton Springs Pool, find one of the many other swimming holes or you can go Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.

You can not leave Austin without stuffing yourself full of brisket and tacos. There are plenty of BBQ options. If you don’t mind waiting hours in line there is the legendary Franklin’s BBQ. For a shorter line, you can make your way to La Barbecue. To experience an authentic, Texas countryside feeling and all you can eat options, a trip to The Salt Lick in Driftwood is worth the drive. To help you understand what the fuss about tacos is, make your way to Torchy’s and try a few. Don’t forget the queso!

Thanks to Dan Bagby from Honeymoon Always for sharing his insight into the beautiful city of Austin, Texas.

Asheville

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best cities in the USA, a small and lively city with so much to do. This Carolina mountain town is a cool pocket of Bohemia nestled amongst more traditionally “southern” communities.

asheville north carolina

Asheville is known for its arts, its mountains, and increasingly, its breweries. With so many breweries per capita and an endless supply of amazing cuisine, it’s the finest spot to enjoy southern-style grits and BBQ and kick back with a refreshing local beer. And don’t forget all the delicious coffee shops.

blue ridge parkway asheville

When traveling in Asheville, don’t forget to visit the sprawling Biltmore Estate mansion (America’s largest private home) and hike to some waterfalls along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway.

Thanks to Amy and Nathan from Two Drifters for sharing a few reasons why Asheville, North Carolina should be on our radars.

Savannah

The epitome of romantic beauty and southern charm, Savannah is a city that packs enough layers to entertain any traveler.

best cities to visit in the usa

Whether you want to stroll Jones Street and the classic squares to admire the incredible architecture and dripping Spanish moss, or eat your heart out at delectable restaurants like The Olde Pink House and Mrs. Wilkes, or even learn about Savannah’s seedy history via a ghost tour or trip to Bonaventure Cemetery, there is something in the city for everyone.

best cities to visit in the usa

Whatever kind of Savannah weekend you’re after, make sure that you don’t leave the city without reading up a bit on Savannah’s incredible history and finding a few spots that interest you: I can virtually guarantee that Savannah’s beauty and story (not to mention its delicious food) will capture your heart for many trips to come.

savannah georgia

Thanks to Kate Storm from Our Escape Clause for sharing her local knowledge on Savannah, Georgia, a city she is clearly very passionate about and why not!

Dallas

Everyone should put a visit to the Lonestar State at the top of their list and Dallas (along with Fort Worth) is the perfect place to start. There is so much to pack into a weekend break, with visits to museums and the gorgeous Dallas Arboretum, beautiful outdoor adventures on lakes and hikes, stadium tours, wildlife encounters – and not forgetting a bit of the wild west, there really is something for everyone.

Add in some great foodie spots, awesome BBQ Joints, and the ever-growing craft beer scene and you’re got the recipe for a great city break. Need a little more convincing? Read this guide to 48 Hours in Dallas: Things To Do, Where To Stay & What To Eat!

best cities to visit in the usa

Thanks to Vicki Garside from Make Time To See The World for highlighting why Dallas is a great city for a weekend break. We can certainly attest from our own experiences during our weekend getaway in Dallas that this is a beautiful city worth exploring!

Minneapolis

Minneapolis is nicknamed the “Mini-apple” because it has more theater seats per capita than any other U.S. city next to New York.

best cities to visit in the usa

The Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area is called the Twin Cities by locals, and in addition to the abundance of live theater, you will find world-class museums, award-winning restaurants, an ever growing list of breweries, countless parks, and lakes, and iconic live music venues such as First Avenue.

best cities to visit in the usa

In the summer, hop in a kayak and paddle down the Mississippi River or along the Chain of Lakes, visit the famous Spoon and Cherry Sculpture, catch an outdoor movie in one of the many parks, or ride a bike along the Greenway, a peaceful bike trail that runs through the city. When the weather starts getting cold, go cross-country skiing, marvel at ice sculptures during the Winter Carnival or ice skate on one of a frozen lake.

weekend getaway in minneapolis

Also, don’t forget to try the signature “Jucy Lucy”, a tasty burger with melted cheese on the inside. No matter the season, the Twin Cities always has something fun on the calendar!

Thanks to Jenna and Micah from Wander The Map for highlighting their home city of Minneapolis…did they mention the Mall of America aka the largest shopping mall in the United States? Just kidding, there is way more to experience in this part of Minnesota but for those looking for a little retail therapy, it’s definitely THE place to go!

San Diego

San Diego is definitely one of the best cities in the USA. With its stunning sunsets over the bay and perfect weather, you can’t go wrong with a visit to this southern Californian city. San Diego has something for everyone, from history to natural beauty, and all within walking distance.

best cities in the usa

The top attraction is the picturesque Balboa Park, home to museums, the world famous San Diego Zoo, various gardens, and it even has free Wi-Fi throughout. Love walking tours? Head to the park’s tourist office to join one of their great free walking tours of the park.

best cities in the usa

Other highlights include Seaport Village, home to shops and restaurants along the bay, Coronado Island, and the charming Gaslamp Quarter, home to historic Victorian buildings full of shops and restaurants.

san diego

I also suggest taking the 2-Day Trolley Tour & Seal Tour combo which is a great way to orient yourself to the city. The Trolley Tour portion takes you on a historic trolley and covers everything from the downtown to Coronado Island. And the Seal Tour portion takes you out onto the water to learn more of the city’s rich history, plus see a plethora of sea lions.

weekend getaway in san diego

Thanks to Stephanie Mayo from The World As I See It for giving us a brief insight into why San Diego may just be the perfect weekend getaway hotspot! It’s certainly on our bucket list now.

San Francisco

Three days is the perfect amount of time to enjoy San Francisco, California. You can visit a few of the tourist sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of the Arts, and Alcatraz. Plus you’ll have time to explore deeper into what makes the city.

best cities in the usa

Walk the neighborhoods like Haight-Asbury, the Mission, Hayes Valley, and Marina. Take in one of the urban hikes through Golden Gate Park or the Presidio. Eat your way through all the ethnic food you can find across the neighborhoods, a foodie favorite is Little Italy (North Beach).

best cities in the usa

Take in a show at the Filmore or the Orpheum. Enjoy craft cocktails in spots like Bourbon and Branch, a speakeasy, or at one of the sky high bars up on Nob Hill. Visit museums like the Museum of Modern Art that just reopened or The Walt Disney Family Museum.

Make a few plans over your weekend but above everything, my favorite thing to do in San Francisco is to just walk and get distracted by all the great places there are to explore.

best cities in the usa

Thanks to Megan MacNee from Traveling Nine to Fiver for reminding us why we need to make a return trip to the Bay Area in the near future and experience another amazing weekend getaway! We LOVE San Francisco and Megan has just given us more inspiration to explore this beautiful city.

Tampa

There’s no better way to spend a weekend than by visiting Tampa Bay. The best part is you get to experience three cities in one during your stay. The combo of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater are sure to make your trip one of the best ever!

best cities in the usa

One reason your next trip should be to Tampa Bay is because of the beaches. St. Petersburg and Clearwater have some of the best beaches in the USA. From water biking to kayaking to laying on the beach, whatever water activity you’re dreaming of, you can do it here.

best cities in the usa

Entertainment is nonstop and the Tampa Riverwalk is 2.4-miles of excitement. With playgrounds, splash parks, art, music, museums, and more along the path, there’s more than enough to occupy everyone. Speaking of entertainment, make sure not to miss out on the world-renowned amusement park, Busch Gardens Tampa, which has some of America’s best roller coasters, shows, animal encounters and so much more.

best cities in the usa

And before you head home, take a walk through the late 1800’s in the National Historic Landmark District of Ybor City and buy some Cuban cigars for your drive home!

Thanks to Ben and Jazzy from Road Affair for highlighting some of the best reasons to visit the Tampa Bay region of Florida. Who doesn’t love amazing beaches but the beauty of this part of Florida is that there is so much more to experience on an action-packed weekend break!

Boston

Boston’s winters can be brutal, so spring is when the city comes alive. There are plenty of warm-weather activities to entertain weekend visitors – from seeing the historic sites along the 2.5-mile long Freedom Trail to checking out a Red Sox game at Fenway Park to taking a leisurely boat ride around Boston Harbor.

fenway park boston

And no spring trip to Boston is complete without spending time strolling through the Boston Common and Public Garden.

boston common

If it rains, you can explore one of the world-class museums like the Museum of Science or Museum of Fine Arts or pay a visit to one of the many local breweries – Samuel Adams is the oldest and most popular.

If you want to watch the annual running of the Boston Marathon in person, then plan your visit for the third weekend in April (Just be sure to book your hotel room far in advance!).

Thanks to Brianne Miers from A Traveling Life for her inspiring reminder that Boston should be the top of everyone’s lists for a long weekend vacation! If you love history, culture, and baseball, there is no better place to experience all of this and more than Boston, Massachusetts.

Nashville

Nashville is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway in the US. Nashville has it all – some of the best music in the country, an amazing food scene, gorgeous and adventurous outdoor opportunities as well as a spectacular selection of art, unique shopping and much more!

best cities to visit in the usa

A weekend is not enough time to visit this wonderful city and see it all – I’ve lived here my whole life and am still finding new places and things to do but here are some of my favorite things to suggest for a first timer’s visit to my hometown:

Hike around Radnor Lake

Just a little south of downtown, Radnor Lake State Park sits nestled in between several residential neighborhoods. If you didn’t know it was there, you would never even guess.

radnor lake nashville

Radnor is highly beloved by locals and on a gorgeous day, you’ll have to even fight for a parking spot. There are some trails from easy beginner to difficult located in the park but if you’re looking for something just quick to experience Radnor, do the lake trail – it just circles the lake and is mostly flat. Radnor is also great for avid bird watchers.

Explore 12South Neighborhood

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Nashville is 12South and it has so much to offer. If you’re hungry, try popsicles at Las Paletas, cupcakes from the cupcake ATM at Sprinkles, donuts from Five Daughters, Bartaco and Burger Up. If you’re thirsty, try The Filling Station and Ember’s Ski Lodge for spirits or Frothy Monkey for coffee.

best cities in the usa

If you want to get outside, head down to Sevier Park and have a picnic! If your main goal is shopping, 12South has tons of unique shops like Draper James, Imogene + Willie and White’s Mercantile.

Go Honky Tonkin’

While it is definitely more touristy than my other suggestions, I always say everyone needs to experience Lower Broad at least one time in their life. The lights, the country music pouring out of every open bar door, the cowboy boots – it’s all so cliche but if you can accept and get past that, it’s so much fun too.

best cities in the usa

Make sure to check out Acme Feed + Seed while you’re down there – a four-story honky-tonk, restaurant, and bar!

Thanks to Ashley Hubbard from Wild Hearted for sharing more inspiring reasons to visit Music City! As a native local from Nashville, Ashley is definitely a great resource for local tips on the best spots to experience this gorgeous city.

New Orleans

Gorgeous architecture reminiscing of European capitals, delicious food with French, Spanish and African origins, and the best jazz music in the country – New Orleans has it all! You can make a day-by-day plan and visit as many attractions as you can, or simply arrive in the French Quarter, walk the streets in no particular direction and marvel at the balconies and galleries covered with hanging fern.

best cities in the usa

The French Quarter is the most popular place among tourists, so it’s a good idea to explore the rest of the city which is less crowded but just as beautiful. The Garden District is great for long walks under oak trees and exploring the fascinating historic houses in NOLA (you can even find some celebrity homes). Lafayette Cemetery will give you some quiet time and a look into New Orleans’ historic past if you take a guided tour.

new orleans weekend getaway

In case you have an extra half a day, rent a car and drive to Oak Alley, one of the most beautiful plantations in the South. It takes only an hour to get there, but the views are well worth it! (Alternatively, book a tour of Oak Alley with one of New Orleans tour operators. Then you won’t have to worry about transport).

oak alley new orleans

Lastly, but most importantly, try local cuisine! New Orleans has amazing foods like beignets, gumbo, and muffulettas that you won’t be able to try anywhere else in the world.

Thanks to Yulia Dyukova from The Foodie Miles for highlighting why we need to head back to New Orleans ASAP! We LOVE NOLA and there are so many quirky reasons to experience this beautiful city, particular the delicious cuisine that is so difficult to resist.

Portland

Portland is currently one of the hottest city to visit! Portland is well known for the beer, coffee, and abundance of food carts. Whether you like food, hiking, or drinking beer, you’ll feel right at home in Portland. Start your day with some Stumptown coffee and brunch from one of the specialty spots in Portland (Jam or Mothers Bistro is a good place to start). Stroll along the waterfront, hang out at Powell’s Bookstore or take a hike through Forest Park.

best cities to visit in the usa

The best thing about Portland is all the beautiful scenery you can find within a couple hours. Portland is the perfect starting point for a scenic drive around Oregon. A road trip through the state is the perfect way to spend your time in Portland.

portland oregon

From Portland, head east for 30 miles to marvelous Multnomah Falls, with plenty of options if you like to hike, including one of our favorites Angels Rest, and gorgeous views of Columbia River Gorge. Continue southeast to Bend, where you will find Smith Rock State Park, one of the seven wonders of Oregon, and the mecca for rock-climbing (and hiking).

best cities to visit in the usa

Don’t forget to cross over to the west side of the state to drive along the US-101 and see all the beauty the Oregon Coast has to offer. Head back to Portland, and end the day with more great food and beers because there’s plenty of both in Portland!

Thanks to Tarah and Tip from Fit Two Travel for giving us a few reasons why we should all be considering adding Portland to our list of weekend hotspots in the near future. We love visiting a city where you can experience the urban energy while also not having far to travel to explore rural beauty – Portland certainly fits this category!

Washington DC

Washington DC is an amazing city with a list of must-sees and should-dos that would keep you entertained for months. Of course, there are the monuments and memorials, museums, Congress and the White House. That alone can keep you busy for a week.

washington dc

But there are so many more hidden spots that are worth checking out and fun things to do in Washington DC and here are a few ideas:

  • Take a stroll at the National Arboretum, a beautiful park that showcases traditional gardens from around the world. They have a bonsai exhibit, an Asian Valley and an Azalea forest.
  • Check out some of the fun neighborhoods, like Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Eastern Market, or Columbia Heights. You’ll find amazing restaurants, little parks, fun shops and boutiques.
  • Eat! You’ll find restaurants for every ethnic food your heart desires, no matter how obscure. Be adventurous and eat your way around the world.
best cities to visit in the usa

Have fun and enjoy one of the most diverse cities in the United States!

Thanks to Maria Haase from Maria Abroad for sharing a few of her favorite reasons to explore the capital of the United States. Washington DC is blessed to have a myriad of free attractions around the Mall and clearly, there are a lot of other reasons why we should be considering a visit here in the near future.

Chicago

Ask any Chicagoan for our must-see sights, and we’ll tell you to you to hit the neighborhoods. All of the diverse neighborhoods are home to delicious food, unique shops and spots you won’t find anywhere else. Here’s a sampling of the best Chicago neighborhoods worth exploring during a weekend getaway:

Pilsen – Pilsen was a Ukrainian and German enclave that is now largely Latino, boasting some of the best tiny taco joints you’ll find. For the adventurous, Birrerria de Octolan has tasty fixings for goat tacos at very reasonable prices ($12 once fed four of us!). Try Modern Cooperative for mid-century modern furniture or visit the free National Museum of Mexican Art’s ever-changing collection.

pilsen chicago

Andersonville –  This Swedish domain has lots of shopping and great eats. I’m in love with Hopleaf’s endless beer list and mussels with frites, as well as the indie market, Anderson Galleria. Great theater resides with the Neo-Futurists and the pH Comedy Theater.

andersonville chicago

Devon Avenue – A long and diverse street, you’ll see strong Indian, Orthodox Jewish, Russian and Assyrian populations. I start off at Viceroy of India’s reasonable buffet and never miss perusing Resham’s gorgeous textiles, Sukhadia’s Indian candy with nut flavors, and the array of jewelry and clothing shops down Devon.

Wherever you venture, test out the local spots and quirky shops in the neighborhoods, and you’ll find the real Chicago every time.

Thanks to Lisa Ghisolf from Work Travel Tech for highlighting a few of the thriving local neighborhoods that are worth experiencing when you visit Chicago for a weekend getaway.

Miami

Anyone who visits Miami Beach will certainly fall in love with the vibrant latin culture, gorgeous beaches, and delicious food options. Whether you’re making a quick stop here before embarking on a cruise, checking out one of the popular music festivals in Miami, or heading down here for a Winter Escape, you will never find a shortage of things to do in Miami.

best cities to visit in the usa

Besides lounging on the beach and enjoying the Florida sun, make sure you visit the artistic district of Wynwood to explore its unbelievable street graffiti and “hipster”.

best cities to visit in the usa

If you’re looking for a good night out, then Miami is arguably the best city in the country for drinking, dancing, and meeting people. There are hundreds of bars and clubs spread around the city, and many don’t close until after the sun comes up!

best cities to visit in the usa

I’ve visited Miami on two separate occasions now, and each time I wish I had more time!

Thanks to Dave Anderson from Jones Around The World for highlighting why Miami is not just a hotspot for a beach vacation (though I have to admit I’m sold by the gorgeous beaches and ocean there!) and why it’s a great spot for a relaxing weekend break!

Los Angeles

Forget the Hollywood visions of Los Angeles that have filled your head. Instead, explore LA through its burgeoning art scene located downtown (DTLA). The once gritty streets are bursting at the seams with hip hotels, an abundance of independent shops, cafes and hidden bars and of course art everywhere you turn.

best cities to visit in the usa

Settle in at the Ace Hotel (or The Standard) for a trendy vibe offering visitors a slice of “LA cooldom,” before venturing out on a graffiti art tour in LA’s most exciting neighborhood, the Arts District.

best cities to visit in the usa

Next head over to the beautiful Broad Museum showcasing some of the best contemporary art including the mesmerizing Infinity Mirror Room.

walt disney concert hall

Take a peek at Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall and downtown’s community square, Grand Park. With a fountain to cool down in, playgrounds and lots of room to spread out, weekends often bring the crowds for craft shows, concerts and more.

With more restaurants than you could sample in a year, our must visit picks are Grand Central Market for a selection of some of LA’s hottest eateries and Clifton’s Cafeteria which boasts multiple bars spanning several levels all stationed around a 40 foot (fake) redwood and a menagerie of taxidermied animals lining the walls.

Thanks to Karilyn Owen from No Back Home for sharing such inspiring reasons to visit downtown LA! Whether you are eager to experience the infamous Hollywood Boulevard or sample local eateries, Los Angeles is home to an eclectic blend of culture.

Seattle

Head to this world-class city on the Pacific North-West coast of America and find a city with lots to offer visitors.

best cities to visit in the usa

Arriving in Seattle on the clipper from Victoria in Canada means one thing – a fantastic sea-view of its most iconic structure – the Space Needle Heading to the top of the Space Needle at 605 feet tall ensures great views of the city as well as Mt Rainier, Puget Sound and the surrounding Olympic and Cascades mountain ranges. It must surely be a must-see on any visit to the city.

Take a stroll around Pike Place Market – possibly Seattle’s most iconic attraction – and wander the fruit and vegetable stalls. Stop and admire the beautiful flowers for sale and browse the many shops. Choose from the many eateries on offer or sip a coffee at the original Starbucks and people-watch.

Don’t forget to stop by the famous gum wall whilst at the market…it is certainly different! In 2015, 2350 pounds of gum was removed from Post Alley but the gum quickly returned!

For visitors seeking something more than the hustle and bustle of the city head to Discovery Park or Seward Park for a stroll and experience the wonderful forests and local wildlife.

Thanks to Tracy Collins from Tracy’s Travels In Time for sharing a few reasons why the Emerald City is the perfect city for a weekend getaway. Be prepared to endure rain but don’t let it stop you from enjoying the beautiful city of Seattle!

Cheshire St Louis – How to Enjoy the Perfect Boutique Experience?

0

If you are looking for a charming boutique establishment that epitomizes everything you associate with stereotypical British charm, look no further than The Cheshire St Louis Hotel. Whether you are inspired by British heritage or simply love reading historic literary masterpieces from across the pond, a weekend stay at The Cheshire St Louis offers the ultimate experience to inspire all of the British genes inside you.

the cheshire st louis

Having recently spent an awesome weekend in St Louis exploring an ‘alternative’ side to the Gateway City, we are ready to share an in-depth review as to why The Cheshire is the perfect accommodation option if you prefer a boutique experience rather than a traditional chain hotel that I’m sure we are all familiar with.

the cheshire st louis

Forget the modern era of technology and trendy decor and instead, take a look back at the grandeur and historic culture that the British people can be proud of.

the cheshire st louis

The moment I heard about this hotel, I knew we had to stay here to see how well the hotel had adopted the British-inspired theme…we didn’t leave disappointed! Let’s take a look at why The Cheshire St Louis is an alternative hotel that you can’t help but fall in love with the next time you head to the Gateway City!

The Cheshire St Louis Information

A visit to St Louis offers the opportunity to experience a myriad of amazing attractions, ranging from the iconic Gateway Arch to the historic Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals. However, for those of you that are frequent visitors to the city or perhaps you just prefer to explore off the beaten path St Louis, we strongly recommend staying at The Cheshire St Louis as it provides the perfect setting to experience something a little different to the norm.

the cheshire st louis

Location

The Cheshire St Louis is conveniently located next to Forest Park which offers easy access to many of the city’s iconic attractions. If you are unfamiliar with St Louis, one of the best FREE attractions in the city is St Louis Zoo, located in the heart of Forest Park. What better way to experience a day here than being able to avoid all of congestion and parking difficulties and take a leisurely stroll through the park and experience this attraction.

If you are looking for something to do in the evening conveniently located to this hotel, why not check out the Hi-Pointe Theatre that dates back to 1922. Alternatively, for those of you looking to catch up on some work or simply enjoy your favorite espresso, I love the style of the Starbucks that is situated next to The Cheshire Hotel.

The Cheshire Inn St Louis

Tudor Revival Style Architecture

Walking around the outside of the hotel, if you are familiar with the black and white Tudor Revival architecture that I personally associate with Chester, England you will immediately realize why this hotel is named “The Cheshire Inn.”

the cheshire inn st louis

This architectural movement dates back to the 19th century when timber wooden framing was used and painted black in conjunction with white panels in between the frames. This vivid style is very apparent in the design of The Cheshire St Louis hotel.

chester architecture

Although historians have later revealed that this style of architecture is associated with a “Cheshire specialty”, there are numerous other examples where this was used prior to the city of Chester adopting this.

chester rows architecture

Take a moment to walk around the outside of the hotel and notice the relaxing courtyard along the side of the hotel with a variety of outdoor chairs where you can enjoy your favorite beverage or perhaps enjoy a game of chess with the life-size pieces.

the cheshire st louis

The opposite side of the hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool which was in the process of being renovated in preparation for the summer season.

the cheshire st louis

As you can imagine, any British architect visiting St Louis will immediately fall in love with this hotel and that’s just from perusing around the exterior. The moment you walk into the lobby, you realize the experience is only just starting.

the cheshire st louis

A Hint of British Inspiration

Ok, so it’s fair to say this hotel is filled with a little more than just a “hint” of British inspiration. The entrance to the hotel immediately captures your imagination with a full-size red telephone box that we all love to associate with British culture.

the cheshire st louis

The classic public telephone boxes are unfortunately a dying species around the UK but this is one tradition I am sure we all want to remember.

The entrance is also guarded by a Queen’s Redcoat Guard, a stereotypical reflection on the infantry associated with guarding royal residence’s throughout the UK.

the cheshire st louis

As you walk inside, don’t worry, the British theme is taken to the next level. The beautiful ornate decor may seem antiquated to many but for the die-hard lovers of British heritage, you immediately realize you are in a dream hotel!

the cheshire st louis

Our check-in experience was smooth and the friendly concierge gave us a brief overview of the various restaurants on-site along with the obvious theme throughout the hotel – British literary playwrights, poets, and authors!

the cheshire st louis

The moment you check in, you are handed a bookmark along with the name of your room. All of the rooms follow the pattern of iconic British literary figures, so be prepared to stay overnight in the “James Bond Suite by Ian Fleming” or perhaps “Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.”

the cheshire st louis

Take a moment to walk around each floor of the hotel and admire the British inspiration that is obvious throughout. From the paintings on the walls to the carpet style and ornaments strategically placed on the sideboards, you cannot help feel like you are staying at a Victorian-style hotel in the heart of England.

the cheshire st louis

British Literary Themed Rooms

Take a moment to think about all of the British literature you know and then contemplate an author or book that would be perfect for a travel blogger? Before visiting St. Louis, I have to admit that Heather and I discussed several different authors we were inspired by and which themed room we would love to stay in.

gullivers travels the cheshire st louis

When we were handed the room key to Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” it all made perfect sense. We couldn’t have picked anything better to associate our travel blogging lifestyle combined with the British heritage running through my veins!

the cheshire st louis

Swift may not be in the top echelon of iconic British authors such as Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen or Lewis Carroll, but The Cheshire St Louis certainly did a great job picking out Gulliver’s Travels for us!

the cheshire st louis

Opening the door to our suite, we were greeted by a spacious living area full of decor and paintings associated with Gulliver’s Travels. Of course, a themed literature room wouldn’t be the same without a copy of the book and we immediately noticed this on the table waiting for us to enjoy Swift’s historic story.

the cheshire st louis

One of the most eye-catching components of our room was the gorgeous windows that opened up to a view of the courtyard I referenced earlier. The elaborate design of the windows combined with the intricate details throughout the room made this the perfect accommodation option for us.

the cheshire st louis

Waking up and being able to open the windows and catch a glimpse of Forest Park was definitely a selling point of this hotel but ultimately it’s the overall experience that will make you want to stay at The Cheshire St Louis.

the cheshire st louis

The bathroom was relatively small but contained everything you would need for a refreshing start to the day. We were ready to head back downstairs and enjoy breakfast in the quaint nook area by the reception.

the cheshire st louis hotel

Fine Dining at The Cheshire Hotel

Whether you are looking to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at The Cheshire St Louis, you can be assured that there are plenty of options available.

starbucks

As I mentioned earlier, for those of you that just need your morning Starbucks, the Seattle-based chain is located on the other side of the parking lot to the hotel.

cheshire breakfast nook

However, for those that prefer to sample a more authentic breakfast experience, why not enjoy the complimentary breakfast selection offered by The Cheshire?

the cheshire st louis

A wide variety of hot and cold delicacies are available every morning while you can also enjoy your morning caffeine with a sampling of Kaloi’s Coffee.

the cheshire st louis

If you are like us, you will likely head out to explore the city of St Louis shortly after breakfast but if you are planning on relaxing around the hotel throughout the day, why not check out one of the following restaurants for lunch or dinner.

fox and hounds tavern

The Fox and Hounds Tavern is located inside The Cheshire St Louis hotel and offers a stereotypical British style pub experience with a delicious looking menu.

This cozy pub is a re-creation of a gathering room in an English home

Whether you are intrigued by the sound of “Liverpool Wings”, “Bristol Sliders” or of course, “Coventry Fish and Chips,” there are various options all with a British themed name to salivate over. If you prefer to just head downstairs for a beverage, sample a “yard of ale” or perhaps an Irish, Scottish or American whiskey while relaxing by the cozy fireplace.

fox and hounds tavern

Advertised as a “sleek and exciting basement pub,” Basso is an alternative option located next to The Cheshire Hotel offering traditional wood-grilled Italian cuisine such as pizza, pasta or lighter options if you prefer to just enjoy the Italian inspired environment.

basso restaurant st louis

Meanwhile, the newest option available for those staying at The Cheshire is Boundary, “a brasserie-influenced menu of classic comfort foods.” From delicious looking seafood dishes to home comforts such as Mac and Cheese, this restaurant is sure to have something that will help satisfy your appetite.

This eclectic blend of dining options just reaffirms the decision to stay at The Cheshire St Louis…you certainly won’t go hungry while staying here!

Summary

Ready for a stereotypical British experience? The Cheshire St Louis Hotel is the ultimate experience inspired by the rich British heritage we all love to associate with the royal family. I love the theme throughout the hotel and if you are looking for an accommodation option in a great location, I don’t think you will be disappointed with The Cheshire Hotel.

the cheshire st louis

Regardless of your hotel preference, it’s fair to say this is a unique experience that we strongly encourage you to consider. It may not be for everyone, particularly those that are interested in a modern or trendy option, but this is one experience that will long live in your memory.

the cheshire st louis

We look forward to staying at The Cheshire St Louis again in the future and this has quickly jumped to the very top of our favorite hotels in the Gateway City!

5 Awesome Things to Do in Huntsville All Year Round

14

A visit to Alabama may not be on everyone’s immediate bucket list radar but after hearing that the TBEX North America conference was going to be hosted in Huntsville in 2017, we were immediately excited about the prospect of taking the short four-hour drive over from Arkansas. After spending a few days here interacting with fellow like-minded travel bloggers and exploring some of the best attractions, we can well and truly attest that Huntsville is a place worth experiencing. If you are looking for the top things to do in Huntsville, keep reading!

huntsville alabama

Where is Huntsville, Alabama?

You may be pleasantly surprised to hear that Huntsville is the third largest city in Alabama after Birmingham, Montgomery, and recently surpassing Mobile. Located in the northern half of the state, Huntsville is surrounded by a myriad of rural beauty that we strongly encourage you to explore if you plan on spending several days in this region. However, if you are only planning on visiting the city, we have a few things to do in Huntsville that should immediately capture your imagination.

huntsville alabama

Let’s first take a look at how easy it is to access Huntsville. We were extremely fortunate to be able to take a short road trip across from Arkansas but for many of our friends in the blogging industry, it wasn’t the easiest city to reach.

Huntsville International Airport is located ten miles outside of the downtown neighborhood but given its relatively small size, it means that this is a particularly expensive airport to fly into. Alternative airports that may offer more affordable routes include nearby Birmingham and a little further afield, Memphis, Nashville and even Atlanta, all of which are within 3 hours of Huntsville.

Memphis to Huntsville – 216 miles (3 hours 39 minutes)

memphis to huntsville

Atlanta to Huntsville – 180 miles (3 hours 14 minutes)

atlanta to huntsville

Nashville to Huntsville – 110 miles (1 hours 53 minutes)

If you are planning a visit to Huntsville and want to take some time to explore some of the surrounding cities, why not consider a weekend in Nashville where you can take a Country Music Hall of Fame tour or explore the historic Belle Meade Plantation.

Things to Do in Huntsville, Alabama

Ok, so you finally figure out that Huntsville is way more accessible than you initially imagined. But what about when you actually arrive in the wonderfully named “Rocket City?” I think it’s fair to say the name pretty much gives it away!

There are plenty of hotel options throughout Huntsville but we stayed at the gorgeous Embassy Suites which was perfectly situated in the heart of downtown. Check out their latest prices and availability here.

If you are approaching Huntsville from the West, you cannot help but notice the huge rocket that towers above the city…more on this later though!

things to do in huntsville

Let’s take a look at five awesome things to do in Huntsville based on our very own experiences. And yes, it’s feasible that you can experience all of these in a weekend getaway.

  • US Rocket and Space Center
  • Twickenham Historic District
  • Huntsville Botanical Garden
  • Self-Guided Walking Tour Downtown Huntsville
  • Huntsville’s Food and Culture Scene

Given that we were primarily visiting Huntsville on this trip for a travel conference, we didn’t have as much time as we would have liked to explore everything the Rocket City has to offer. For those of you that prefer a more “adventure” experience, be sure to visit the likes of Monte Sano State Park which offers a myriad of hiking trails for all skill levels.

things to do in huntsville

We opted to stay within the confines of the city limits and explore some of Huntsville’s iconic attractions. You will also notice a recurring theme throughout our choice of attractions. They are either FREE or low-cost options meaning that a visit to Huntsville will be a very cost-effective trip.

Twickenham Historic District

Why not start your visit to Huntsville than by visiting the Twickenham Historic District where you can admire a myriad of spectacular antebellum homes and other architectural masterpieces. If you love architecture, you can’t help but fall in love with this part of Huntsville.

twickenham historic district

Just a short drive from the heart of downtown, the Twickenham District comprises of several blocks of breathtaking homes that epitomize the Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles of the early 19th-Century.

twickenham historic district

Twickenham was actually the former name of Huntsville and the story dates back to LeRoy Pope, who named this area after the London suburb where his relative, Alexander Pope resided. Just another interesting fact about this part of Huntsville that you may be unaware of.

twickenham historic district

Today, the Twickenham Historic District comprises of about one-half of the original town but obviously, there has been substantial growth since the days of Pope purchasing the land where these gorgeous antebellum homes stand.

things to do in huntsville

Depending on the time you visit Huntsville, you may be fortunate to have the opportunity to take a guided walking tour of the Twickenham District. This is a great opportunity to learn more about specific homes and also tour the oldest home in Alabama, the Weeden House Museum, dating back to 1819. More information on guided history tours throughout Huntsville can be found here.

US Rocket and Space Center

Anyone visiting Huntsville will do well to avoid the hype surrounding the US Rocket and Space Center. In all honesty, why would you want to avoid this amazing experience?

things to do in huntsville

In fact, we recommend doing the exact opposite and embracing every moment you have by taking a tour of the historic Shuttle Park and Davidson Center for Space Exploration.

us space and rocket center

The city of Huntsville is proud of the US Rocket and Space Center and rightfully so! Opened in 1970, this center not only showcases hardware from the Apollo program but also a myriad of artifacts and rockets from a variety of missions into space.

Our visit to the Space Center was a little different to most regular visits. We were incredibly fortunate to be given VIP treatment as we attended an evening party behind closed doors at the Space Center and enjoy dinner and drinks literally underneath a rocket inside the Davidson Center.

things to do in huntsville

A guided tour of the Shuttle Park gave us an opportunity to admire the various rockets and also learn about the history of the museum that was first proposed by Dr. Wernher von Braun, an iconic figure in the United States efforts to land the first man on the moon.

things to do in huntsville

Although you may not be quite as fortunate to experience the US Rocket and Space Center as we did, a general admission ticket offers access to pretty much everything we were able to see.

Huntsville Botanical Garden

If the thought of rockets and space shuttles sends you into a scientific overload, why not spend a couple of hours relaxing in the solitude of the gorgeous Huntsville Botanical Garden. Featuring the nation’s largest seasonal butterfly house and nature center, this oasis of natural beauty offers 112-acres of perfectly manicured floral bliss with a plethora of woodland, wildflower, and traditional botanical garden exhibits.

The journey through the botanical garden starts the moment you leave the nature center. The view overlooking the lake and butterfly house is breathtaking and certainly sets the mood for the self-guided tour of the gardens.

Throughout our visit to the Huntsville Botanical Garden, we couldn’t resist sitting down in various spots while admiring the vibrant colors and listening to the solitary sound of birds singing in the distance.

If you choose to visit during the Spring, you may also be fortunate to see some baby ducklings or other wildlife. We didn’t want to get too close with a security team of Canadian geese carefully monitoring our every move but it’s definitely a great experience to watch this offspring in the beautiful setting of the botanical gardens.

Self-Guided Walking Tour Downtown

During our visit to Huntsville, we had the opportunity to listen to the great travel expert Samantha Brown talk about how to “immerse” yourself when traveling. Rather than focusing on the much-debated topic of “tourist vs traveler,” she prefers to simply disregard these categories and instead focus on exploring a destination for yourself. The best way to do this is to get out and take a walk…a philosophy we have followed for quite some time and definitely something we will continue to do in the future!

things to do in huntsville

Huntsville offers a vibrant downtown neighborhood mixed with urban green space that is perfect to walk around and explore. There is ample parking on the side of many of the roads throughout downtown Huntsville along with a number of parking lots close to the Von Braun Convention Center.

The convention center is a great place to start your experience in downtown Huntsville as you have the opportunity to visit both Big Spring Park and the Huntsville Museum of Art, both of which are unique experiences in this city.

things to do in huntsville

Clinton Avenue is the heart and soul of downtown Huntsville with a number of restaurants, bars and coffee shops waiting to attract your attention. I have to admit, when I heard that Honest Coffee Roasters had a location here, I was eager to visit.

After enjoying a Sunday morning latte, I can 100% attest they didn’t disappoint!

If you admire street art, be sure to check out the Clinton Row Colorwalk which is an alley off Clinton Avenue with a variety of awesome artistic works depicting the creative nature of Huntsville locals.

Regardless of your taste in culture or cuisine, the Huntsville downtown community offers a distinctive blend of old and new. Just a short walk from experiencing all of the modern restaurants and bars, you can walk directly into the Historic Old Town and the Five Points Historic District.

Sample Fine Culture and Cuisine

It’s all about sampling local cuisine whenever you visit a new destination and this was certainly the case in Huntsville. When you think about traditional Alabama food, well it’s pretty much anything associated with southern fare.

things to do in huntsville

Think fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits and of course, banana pudding! Huntsville is home to a wide variety of cuisine options from local establishments you should consider experiencing.

things to do in huntsville

One of our favorite spots that we experienced was AM Booth’s Lumberyard where we had the opportunity to sample a wide variety of distinctive southern fare delicacies. Perhaps chicken and waffles may not be considered a delicacy in most parts but if you have never tried this combination, you need to!

Another intriguing location in Huntsville is Campus 805. Formerly a high school, this campus has been renovated and transformed into an entertainment complex housing two local craft breweries where you can sample fine craft brews along with delicious cuisine and several other amenities.

Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza is located within the Yellowhammer Brewing company, providing a perfect collaboration for visitors to enjoy.

The unique collaboration between Earth and Stone and Yellowhammer Brewing at Campus 805 has become one of Huntsville’s most popular spots for craft beer and craft pizza.

It’s fair to say that craft beer and wood-fired pizza is a perfect combination! However, the Campus 805 location didn’t stop here.

They wanted to make the experience even more enjoyable and offered visitors the opportunity to sample local ice-cream from Campus Creamery. Unique and delicious flavors are available and it’s fair to say that anyone visiting this location will definitely leave with their appetite satisfied.

Food trucks can also be found at Campus 805 and if you are a fan of organic food, be sure to check out the Manic Organic food truck. I sampled the pulled pork sandwich and I can highly recommend this.

Summary

Welcome to Huntsville, Alabama! Although we only covered a small number of the things to do in Huntsville, we hope that we have at least inspired you to consider paying the Rocket City a visit. We are already looking forward to returning to Huntsville in the near future to experience more of the fine cuisine available at Campus 805 or to admire the amazing architectural brilliance on display throughout the Twickenham and Old Town Historic Districts.

A visit to Huntsville will at least give you the opportunity to learn more about an iconic location in the history of space exploration while at the same time allow you to sample delicious banana pudding. What more could you want on a trip to Sweet Home Alabama!

Country Music Hall of Fame Tour – How to Enjoy the Best of Nashville?

Nashville is the home of country music and regardless of whether you are an avid listener of this genre, it’s an experience you should look to embrace while exploring Music City. A stereotypical reflection on Nashville may include locals wearing cowboy boots with everything or perhaps all the local musicians performing their latest hits in a Broadway bar. Whether there is any truth behind these stereotypes is entirely debatable but one thing is certain, Nashville is the epitome of embracing the country music scene. What better place to experience this than by taking the Country Music Hall of Fame tour.

country music hall of fame

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Country Music Hall of Fame…well, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like! It’s the pinnacle of the country music industry and where tributes to the legendary artists that have shaped this genre can be found. Election to the Country Music Hall of Fame is the highest honor and dates back to 1961, when Jimmie Rodgers, Fred Rose, and Hank Williams became the first members to be inducted.

country music hall of fame nashville

I will be the first to admit that I am not a huge country music fan but that doesn’t mean I cannot appreciate the history and development of this culture. On the other hand, Heather is a “Southerner” so understandably has been surrounded by country music all her life. Regardless of your background, taking the Country Music Hall of Fame tour is an awesome educational experience and one that we can strongly recommend to anyone visiting Nashville.

country music hall of fame tour

Let’s take a look at what you can experience during the tour and why you cannot afford to visit Nashville without adding the Country Music Hall of Fame to your itinerary!

Country Music Hall of Fame Tour

Before visiting Nashville, we strongly recommend planning an itinerary to experience the best of this city (we generally advise this anywhere you go but Nashville is a pretty diverse city with plenty to see across a wide geographic area). However, downtown Nashville is the heart and soul of the city so it’s critical that anything else that you do should work around this.

country music hall of fame tour

Visiting downtown Nashville will not only allow you to take a self-guided walking tour of many of the city’s iconic attractions but it will give you easy access to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Located on 5th Avenue parallel to Broadway, this venue is connected to the gorgeous Omni Nashville Hotel which if you are considering a weekend in Nashville, is definitely one of our recommended accommodation options.

omni nashville hotel

Although the Country Music Hall of Fame tour can be done in a couple hours, your interest levels will determine exactly how much time you want to spend inside the museum. Your admission tickets are valid all day so you could easily spend the entire day learning about the history of country music.

Before visiting, I’m sure that you will be interested in ticket prices and some of the options available when exploring the Hall of Fame.

Admission Prices

General museum admission prices are as follows:

Adults – $24.95
Youth (Age 6-12) – $14.95
Children (Under 5) – Free

Discounts are also available for seniors, students, military and members of the Country Music Hall of Fame museum gain Free entry also!

In addition to the basic admission prices, there are self-guided audio tours available which provide in-depth information about the exhibits and experiences as you walk around the Hall of Fame Museum. The audio tours are led by Bill Cody, an iconic personality on WSM radio, as he takes you on a journey through the different eras.

These can be purchased for an additional $5 at the ticket desk prior to entry into the museum!

The Country Music Hall of Fame museum is open daily between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Alabama: Song of the South

Our tour started in one of the newer ‘feature’ exhibits titled “Alabama: Song of the South.” If you are familiar with this Hall of Fame band, you will know that this group of cousins started out in the small town of Fort Payne, Alabama before venturing out and helping shape the industry through their unique blend of country music.

Whether you are interested in admiring Jeff Cook’s first electric guitar dating back to the 1960s or perhaps taking a peek at the many awards that Alabama earned such as a Grammy and CMA trophy, there is plenty of memorabilia here to help you learn everything there is to know about this historic group.

Permanent Historical Exhibits

We started in the “special exhibit area” because the majority of the tour takes place on the other side of the elevator. As you begin your self-guided tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame, it’s worth noting that many of the exhibits are frequently changing given that the museum owns more than two million artifacts in their collection.

country music hall of fame tour

Both the second and third floors have permanent exhibitions (the tour starts on the third floor and you make your way back down to ground level) and much of the tour offers a chronological look at country music history.

However, some of the more iconic exhibits are constant so for example, you can be sure that each time you visit you will have the opportunity to admire Elvis Presley’s Solid Gold Cadillac along with a variety of other pieces from Elvis’ golden years.

The permanent exhibits start with a look back at the history of folk and country music and even the good old “Hee-Haw” experience.

As you begin your historical timeline and appreciate the development of country music thanks to leading artists across the various generations, you realize just how far the industry has come.

Through advancements in technology and the ability for present day musicians to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, the contrast between historic legends and today’s era is certainly something to consider.

The Gold Record Wall is another significant location inside the Hall of Fame as it represents all of the albums that sold over 500,000 copies.

Dylan, Cash, and The Nashville Cats

When Bob Dylan made a surprise visit to Nashville in 1966 to record an album, he called up many of Music City’s finest studio musicians to help him. By 1969, Johnny Cash had recruited Dylan to appear on his groundbreaking TV show at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

The exhibit titled Dylan, Cash, and The Nashville Cats: A New Music City, provides a reflection on how these individuals helped shape the Nashville music culture in the 1960s and 70s.

It’s fair to say that before Cash and Dylan helped inspired this culture, Nashville was seen as a ‘locals’ spot and outsiders were not necessarily made to feel as welcome as they were after Cash and Dylan’s influence.

Brad Paisley – Diary of a Player Exhibit

For those of you that are looking to experience the modern era of country music, the Brad Paisley exhibit offered a look through the childhood to present day of the West Virginia native.

Dating back to Paisley grabbing a Silvertone electric guitar aged 13 in 1985 and performing in the renowned WWVA’s Jamboree USA, we are taken on a journey to see how Paisley matured from a childhood prodigy to country music star.

A variety of memorabilia is on display including a number of spectacular guitars but I think my favorite has to be the image of Paisley with a West Virginia guitar, clearly depicting his loyalty to the state where he was brought up.

Country Music Hall of Fame Rotunda

Perhaps the most iconic location inside the Hall of Fame is the Country Music Hall of Fame Rotunda. This central gallery commemorates all inductees through bronze plaques that line the walls inside this quiet space.

Visitors to this spot can learn more about their favorite country legend while paying respects to all those that are no longer with us, yet played an integral role in shaping the music industry today.

Summary

If you are planning a visit to Nashville in the near future, the Country Music Hall of Fame tour is an experience you won’t want to miss. The beauty of this attraction is that it’s an evolving museum with a number of exhibits frequently changing. Each year you can return to celebrate the new inductees and contemplate how the country music industry continues to thrive.

country music hall of fame

It’s possible that after visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame that you will leave with a much greater appreciation and respect for country music. As I indicated previously, I am not a huge country music fan but you don’t have to be to enjoy this tour.

There is so much to learn and enjoy throughout the self-guided tour and I would certainly go back in a heartbeat to experience this all over again!

Why the Omni in Nashville Is an Awesome Downtown Hotel?

Anyone visiting Nashville will ultimately have to decide which area they want to stay given that there are so many options available depending on your personal preference. The Omni in Nashville is perfectly located and offers a luxury experience that in our opinion, is unequivocally the best throughout the city!

omni in nashville hotel

Nashville is undoubtedly the home of country music! But don’t let folks fool you if they try to convince you that a trip to Nashville is all about cowboy boots and listening to the likes of Dolly Parton or Johnny Cash. Music City is a thriving metropolis in the heart of Tennessee that deserves way more credit than any negative stereotypes that float around and spending a weekend in downtown Nashville offers the opportunity to lay these claims to rest.

omni in nashville

Having stayed at a number of alternative establishments around the surrounding suburbs, we were excited to stay at the Omni in Nashville. Let’s take a look at exactly why this hotel should be high on your bucket list of possible accommodation options the next time you plan a trip to Music City!

Omni Nashville Hotel Information

The Omni Nashville Hotel is the epitome of luxury accommodation on various fronts. Whether you are staying in Nashville to enjoy a weekend getaway with a loved one or perhaps visiting for business, the Omni is the perfect option. I have to admit, it’s certainly not at the cheap end of the budget but it’s well and truly a perfect example of “you get what you pay for!”

Location

As I indicated, the Omni in Nashville is in the perfect downtown location to explore this part of the city. Located directly beside the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Omni Nashville Hotel is just a block away from Broadway and a few minutes from iconic attractions such as the Ryman Auditorium, Bicentennial Capital Mall State Park among many others.

Convenience to nearby attractions, restaurants, and public transportation is understandably a critical component of any hotel that we consider before booking an overnight stay. The Omni Nashville Hotel checks all of these boxes and more!

Parking

Parking is either via valet service which costs $34 for the full day or self-parking is available at the nearby Music City Center parking garage.

music city center

This is definitely our recommended route given that it’s just a short walk from the hotel entrance and at only $12 for an overnight stay (if you are at the hotel for less than 10 hours, otherwise it’s a maximum charge of $18) it’s a real bargain in a downtown metropolis.

Amenities

As with all luxury hotel brands across the globe, the Omni Nashville offers guest the opportunity to experience everything you could wish for in a hotel stay.

omni in nashville

Here are some of the highlights, several of which we will touch on later based on our own experience:

  • Rooftop pool deck with breathtaking views of the Nashville skyline (we all love the iconic “Batman” building right?)
  • Full-service business center to meet all of your needs if you are in the city for work.
  • Three unique and diverse restaurants offering a variety of cuisine options, in addition to Bongo Java Coffee Shop to start your day with a favorite espresso beverage.

omni nashville hotel

It’s hard to envision such a spectacular hotel without actually experiencing it for yourselves, as words and pictures can barely do this justice. We have given you the basic facts at the Omni, so let’s share our very own experience as we enjoyed an awesome weekend in Nashville.

Omni in Nashville Experience

Walking through the revolving doors of the Omni Nashville Hotel, you are immediately encapsulated by the modern decor and energy that reverberates across the lobby.

omni nashville hotel

We instantly realized that the Omni brand was solely focused on emphasizing the Nashville culture and creating an extension of the trendy vibe that you can’t help but notice as you explore the city.

The Omni Nashville Hotel is created specifically to be an authentic expression of the city’s vibrant music culture.

I’m sure by the time you finish reading this review, you will be ready to visit Music City and make a reservation at the Omni Hotel!

The Lobby

Any hotel experience is ultimately dependent on the guest and exactly what you are expecting.

omni nashville hotel lobby

We always enjoy spending time in the lobby area to either catch up on some work or relax with our favorite beverage. The Omni Nashville Hotel is certainly in the very high echelons of luxurious lobby areas.

omni in nashville

A number of seating areas are available in addition to a relaxing library where you can enjoy a more “home” experience with your favorite novel in front of the fireplace.

The decor throughout the lobby is consistent with the rest of the hotel and certainly illustrates the philosophy the Omni brand is associated with.

Luxurious Suites

Spacious, elegant, modern, trendy and vibrant….all superlatives that I would use to describe the gorgeous suite we stayed in at the Omni in Nashville.

omni nashville hotel suite

And this doesn’t even begin to provide sufficient justice to how amazing our hotel suite really was.

omni nashville hotel

A gorgeous living room area with full-length windows overlooking the city of Nashville was the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing beverage.

nashville skyline

Our gracious hosts courteously left us samples of local Dickel whiskey that provided the perfect nightcap as we enjoyed the bright lights of Nashville.

omni in nashville

The living room area consisted of several work areas and the long bar table was definitely an attractive feature that Heather constantly indicates we need in our apartment now!

omni nashville hotel

The intimate location of these suites makes them perfect for a relaxing getaway.

A separate king bedroom and en suite bathroom with spacious shower, bathtub and double vanity were just an added incentive to keep us inside the hotel rather than heading out to explore Music City.

Bongo Java Coffee Shop

Many hotels boast a brand name coffee shop like Starbucks and for the most part, this is a nice addition for those that need to enjoy their morning espresso.

omni in nashville

However, the Omni Nashville Hotel have taken this to the next level by offering Bongo Java Coffee Shop inside the lobby, a Nashville-based company that is renowned for being the city’s “oldest and most celebrated coffeehouse.”

bongo java coffee shop

What better way to spend our Easter Sunday morning than relaxing inside this quirky yet vibrant coffee shop while sipping on a delicious espresso and sampling one of the free bagels accompanied by strawberry cream cheese.

bongo java coffee shop

For those of you that love a traditional Americano or Macchiato, Bongo Java has everything you could wish for. However, I tend to like a little flavor and opted for one of their specialty beverages.

bongo java coffee shop

The Broadway coffee drink is advertised as “Whisper Creek Tennessee sipping cream caramel, espresso, and milk. Let me tell you, it tasted just as good as it looks in the picture!

Hatch Show Print

One of the most intriguing spots inside the Omni Nashville Hotel is the Hatch Show Print shop.

omni in nashville

Dating back to 1879, this historic letterpress shop prints 500-600 posters every year and offers printing services on a variety of diverse projects around the Nashville area.

Today, visitors can explore some of the devices used to create these artwork masterpieces along with watching posters roll off the press.

Summary

If you are not impressed by the beauty throughout this hotel suite, well you don’t deserve to stay at a hotel like the Omni! We were honored to enjoy two nights in this suite and already look forward to a return visit in the near future.

The Omni Nashville is not necessarily an affordable option for everyone and probably not the type of hotel you would stay at every time you travel. However, if you are visiting for a special occasion or looking to enjoy the “perfect” weekend getaway, look no further than this hotel.

Weekend in St Louis – How to Enjoy an Alternative Getaway?

If you enjoy visiting a city frequently, it’s inevitable that you will eventually start looking for alternative things to do. Perhaps you have already experienced the mainstream tourist attractions and you are ready to head off the beaten path and explore some of the lesser-known reasons to visit the destination. This is exactly how we feel when we visit St Louis. During our recent weekend in St Louis, we decided to adopt a very different approach and enjoy what we would like to coin “an alternative weekend getaway.”

weekend in st louis

What do we mean by an “alternative weekend getaway?” Rather than staying in a typical chain hotel, we decided to stay somewhere unique and full of character. Our cuisine choices followed this same approach as did the attractions we chose to visit. Hopefully, you will be inspired to enjoy a similar weekend in St Louis after reading this post.

Alternative Weekend in St Louis

St Louis is a city that epitomizes vibrancy with a plethora of cultural neighborhoods waiting to be discovered. Whether you are intrigued by the popular trendy vibe of the Delmar Loop or perhaps you want to sample some fine, local Italian cuisine on The Hill, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the heart of Missouri.

delmar loop st louis

After reading about everything we experienced, I think it’s fair to say that you will realize exactly why we had such an amazing weekend in St Louis recently given that the theme was very close to our hearts.

weekend in st louis

We want to share a possible “alternative” itinerary that will perhaps entice you to explore St Louis particularly if you prefer to stay away from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots.

Stay at The Cheshire Inn St Louis

Are you ready for an experience, unlike anything you will have encountered before? Welcome to The Cheshire Inn St Louis!

the cheshire st louis

For those of you familiar with the black and white architecture typical of the Chester Rows in England, the sight of The Cheshire Hotel will bring back fond memories. This certainly did for myself as for the first 23 years of my life, I was only about 40 miles from Chester’s iconic architectural design.

The Cheshire’s exterior is appealing in more ways that one. The distinctive architecture makes this an attractive option for visitors that want to experience something “different”.

weekend in st louis

As you walk around the outside, the life-size chess board is a unique characteristic while the outdoor patio furniture offers the perfect environment to relax with your favorite beverage.

The real experience doesn’t begin until you step through the entrance. British flair and elegance can be seen throughout the decor with the finest, intricate details not being left untouched.

The lobby serves as both the entrance to the hotel and also a breakfast nook while the dining area is also a lounge where visitors can relax in front of the fireplace while listening to traditional music.

weekend in st louis

It’s the perfect setting to whisk you away into a typical British style residence.

the cheshire inn st louis

All of the hotel rooms inside The Cheshire Hotel are associated with a British author, playwright or poet. As you wander along the hallways, you will notice that every room has a plaque with the name of a historic British literary figure.

weekend in st louis

From Charles Dickens to TS Eliot, you can pretty much guarantee that there is a room with your favorite British author associated with it.

Inside the rooms is directly related to the theme of your author. Pictures, quotes and a novel of the author/poet can be found and it’s a really cool experience as you are taken on a literary adventure around your hotel room.

We were fortunate to stay in Jonathan Swift’s room, a 17th-century author famous for Gulliver’s Travels. I think this was the perfect experience for us given that we are such avid travelers!

Where to Eat in St Louis

St Louis offers an eclectic blend of cuisine options depending on your personal taste. Whether you are looking for a delicious Italian masterpiece or perhaps some traditional Southern fare, you can be assured that there will be something around St Louis to satisfy your palate.

weekend in st louis

Given that we opted to stay at a British style hotel, we figured it was only appropriate to dine at a typical British style pub. Let’s take a look at what we experienced along with the best place in St Louis to enjoy dessert!

Three Kings Public House

Located in the heart of the energetic Delmar Loop neighborhood of St Louis, the Three Kings Public House is a historic bar/restaurant that offers a vast range of beers along with an appetizing menu selection. Renowned as offering “upscale global pub food,” there is a real blend of flavors from across the world, in other words, the perfect spot to enjoy lunch or dinner for the seasoned traveler.

three kings public house st louis

Featuring over 30 beers on tap and 40 craft beers by the bottle, it’s no surprise to hear in 2016 Three Kings Pub was voted as having the “Best Happy Hour in St Louis.”

three kings delmar loop st louis

However, it’s the cuisine that we were particularly interested in as we visited on a busy Saturday night hoping to leave with our appetites satisfied. We didn’t leave disappointed!

three kings pub st louis

An appetizer consisting of house made russet potato chips combined with Queso Blanco was the perfect way to start our dining experience. The Irish cheddar rarebit was an appealing alternative to the queso but as far as light snacks go, this was a great way to start our meal.

chips and queso three kings pub

Anytime I visit a pub, I look for the traditional experience! So it’s no surprise to hear that I opted for the fish and chips.

weekend in st louis

Heather was a little more adventurous and took our waiter’s advice to sample the Cuban sliders. The service was quick, our entrees were delicious and the whole experience was everything we hoped for and more.

For those of you that want to enjoy a typical British style pub on American soil, we strongly encourage paying Three Kings Public House a visit when you are next in St Louis.

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard

Did you know that St Louis was home to the top-rated ice cream establishment in the world? Ted Drewes Frozen Custard can lay claim to that award in 2016 so I think it’s fair to say it comes with a pretty high reputation.

ted drewes frozen custard

Ted Drewes has been selling frozen custard for over 80 years (and Christmas trees for 50+ years) and certainly has set the standard for custard throughout St Louis.

ted drewes frozen custard

It really is good, guys… and gals!

We headed to Ted Drewes and immediately realized it was going to be an awesome experience. This is an incredibly popular spot among locals and there is always a line outside, regardless of the weather.

weekend in st louis

A variety of menu items are available ranging from specialty concretes (the St. Louis Blues concrete is awesome – a lemon, blueberry flavor with a hint of graham cracker) to malts and shakes. If you have a sweet tooth, you can’t help but fall in love with Ted Drewes!

Alternative Things to Do in St Louis

We have been fortunate to visit St Louis and experience everything iconic to the city.

gateway arch weekend in st louis

From the Gateway Arch which is possibly the most significant landmark throughout the city to visiting Busch Stadium, home of the St Louis Cardinals we have enjoyed exploring many of the top attractions in the downtown area.

busch stadium st louis cardinals

But what about some of the lesser known spots downtown? What about some of those neighborhoods that locals tend to congregate while the tourists stick to downtown? Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in St Louis that perhaps you wouldn’t immediately think about.

Schlafly Saint Louis Brewery

Did you also know that St Louis was home to 50+ craft breweries? Yes, we have taken the free Anheuser-Busch tour but we wanted to experience a “local” craft brewery! We ventured to the Schlafly Bottleworks to sample the free guided tours that are offered throughout the weekend.

schlafly bottleworks

I have to admit, neither of us had any idea what to expect especially after we enjoyed the Anheuser-Busch tour so much and didn’t figure a local brewery would be comparable. It wasn’t….it was BETTER!! The Schlafly brand is significant in this part of Missouri because it was the first craft brewery to open since Prohibition.

weekend in st louis

The tour started at 11:00 AM and lasted almost 90 minutes, with a knowledgeable tour guide leading us through the brewhouse and providing a detailed breakdown of the various processes that go into brewing the wonderfully named Schlafly craft beer.

weekend in st louis

When we opened in 1991, we had no business plan beyond wanting to make great beer and food in a fun atmosphere and enjoy it with our community. To this day, our goals remain unchanged. (Schlafly.com)

However, the best part was at the very end when we headed into the special events room and had the opportunity to sample a variety of craft beers from the Schlafly brand.

weekend in st louis

Whether you prefer a pale ale, IPA, white lager or a German-inspired Kölsch style of beer, Schlafly has a distinctive variety waiting for you to enjoy.

schlafly saint louis brewery

It may not be a brand that immediately slips off the tip of your tongue but for those familiar with this in St Louis, it’s no surprise that it’s a popular choice. I enjoyed the pale ale and Kölsch, while Heather was particularly fond of the summer lager.

This was a great way to start our adventure exploring a very different side of St Louis as we hoped to gain a better understanding to why locals truly appreciate this beautiful city.

Other St Louis Craft Breweries

For the craft beer connoisseurs out there, St Louis is a brew haven waiting to be explored. Although Schlafly was our chosen craft brewery, there are plenty others that offer guided tours and sampling experiences.

schlafly brewery tour

Alpha Brewing Company is a great spot to grab a quick local beer, especially if you just visited the infamous City Museum. It is perfectly located downtown St Louis which gives you easy walking access to a plethora of other iconic attractions in the area.

Modern Brewery is another viable option but offers a slightly different experience. All of the beers are named after superheroes or other weird and wonderful names that the co-owners dream of. Inspired by a fresh perspective on global flavors, many of these brews are unique to Modern Brewery and unlike anywhere else in the world.

If you are looking to experience a relatively new brewery, head over to Lafayette Square to enjoy the Square One Brewery and Distillery. Since 2008, this brand has been brewing craft beers and distilled liquors. Be sure to sample the iconic IPA at Square One as it’s the popular choice among locals here.

Explore Street Art

There is something quite spectacular and entertaining about exploring street art around a city.

st louis street art

After enjoying our adventure exploring the concept of street art versus graffiti in Memphis and then finding some of the best street art locations in Atlanta, we were ready to see what St Louis had to offer. There is a very fine line in the argument of “graffiti vs street art” but we will save that for another day.

st louis street art

Believe us when we say that if you are looking for an awesome street art spot, head to the Kosciusko Graffiti Wall along the Mississippi Riverfront near downtown St Louis.

weekend in st louis

We were astounded by how much amazing art can be found here and the wall literally seems to go on for miles (it’s actually approximately one mile long but it takes a while to experience all of it).

weekend in st louis

It’s one of those locations in a city that you could easily spend several hours admiring the creativity and trying to understand the underlying stories behind the various works of art. Sure, there are spots that we would classify as graffiti but for the most, this is the epitome of street art in my opinion.

The Gateway Arch can be seen in several depictions while the iconic St Louis ‘cardinal’ bird is never too far away from the minds of artists.

Summary

St Louis offers a vibrant blend of experiences regardless of your personal taste. We have visited this beautiful city on several occasions and enjoyed something unique each time. Our recent weekend in St Louis was no different and I love the British style theme we adopted throughout the 48 hours we spent in the Gateway City.

weekend in st louis

Many of the spots we visited are unlikely to be at the top of most tourist attraction lists in St Louis but that shouldn’t take anything away from the value in experiencing them.

weekend in st louis

In fact, we encourage you to always look outside the box and consider visiting some of the more locally renowned attractions. You never know what gems you may stumble across next!

Why the Best Beaches in Naples Are Some of Florida’s Finest?

8

If you are looking to experience ultimate relaxation and total serenity, why not consider heading to the best beaches in Naples, Florida! Having visited various beaches scattered around the Sunshine state, we both agree that Naples is home to some of the finest beaches around. There is nothing quite like taking a morning stroll on the pristine golden sand beaches while listening to the waves crashing into the shoreline. This is the type of experience you can expect when you spend time in Naples.

For many years, the coveted title of the best beach in Florida has been shared by a number of spots around the state. Understandably there is a lot of personal preference that goes into this decision but if we had any kind of input, we would certainly include Naples beaches in this debate.

best beaches in naples

During our visit to the TBEX travel bloggers conference in Fort Lauderdale in 2015, we took a road trip through Everglades National Park to experience driving from Miami to Naples. Not only did we experience everything the beautiful city of Naples had to offer, we were also able to relax on these beaches and appreciate why this is such a popular tourist destination for beach lovers around the world.

Best Beaches in Naples

Let’s take a look at what are considered to be the best beaches in Naples. There are several that line the Gulf of Mexico on the western coast of Florida so it’s no surprise to hear that Naples is a popular spot for visitors to the Sunshine state.

best beaches in naples florida

Bonita Beach

Our first stop saw us visit Bonita Beach which was once a fishing village and now transformed into an upscale beach community. We caught our first glimpse of the Gulf of Mexico after spending all our time on the Atlantic side before crossing through the Everglades to experience the breathtaking beaches in Naples.

bonita beach naples

Bonita Beach is the closest beach to I-75, so it’s unsurprising to hear that this is a popular spot for tourists who want to spend some time relaxing before heading back on the road. Alternatively, for locals and visitors alike, there are plenty of nearby accommodation options where you can admire the Gulf of Mexico or take an early morning stroll on the pristine beaches.

best beaches in naples

Bonita Beach Park is a haven for party lovers. But for those of you that prefer a more relaxed environment, don’t worry Bonita Beach has plenty to offer everyone. It is a family friendly stretch of beach with a playground, picnic tables and a burger shack that offers visitors the opportunity to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the surroundings. If you venture a little further north, there are plenty of quieter beach access points.

Barefoot Beach Preserve Park

For those that prefer to avoid large crowds, a visit to Barefoot Beach Preserve Park in Naples will likely be your preferred choice. This location is the ultimate relaxation spot especially late in the day when the sun is setting and you can admire the gorgeous surroundings. Lush mangroves provide a scenic backdrop along with the crisp sound of waves crawling up the untouched beach.

A nature trail, butterfly garden and access to park rangers offer a completely different experience to your traditional beach so for those that love the outdoors and want to learn at the same time, this is yet again a perfect location. Unfortunately, we were not able to spend much time at Barefoot Beach but a return visit here is high on our list the next time we head to Naples!

Clam Pass Park

For the nature lovers out there, a journey aboard a tram along the 3/4 mile boardwalk to reach Clam Pass Park will be an intriguing reason to visit this Naples beach.

best beaches in naples florida

Due to the location in close proximity to a variety of habitats, Clam Pass Park is home to a wide range of wildlife and bird species. Be sure to stay on the lookout because you never quite know what bird will be watching over you!

best beaches in naples florida

Vanderbilt Beach

One of the busiest spots along this stretch of coastline can be found at Vanderbilt Beach, primarily because it is home to a large number of high-rise resorts and other Naples accommodations. Visitors can relax in their condo before taking a stroll outside onto the beach while enjoying the beautiful white sand that typically represents the Gulf of Mexico shoreline in Florida.

vanderbilt beach naples florida

Why not take a hike along the beach one morning to the aforementioned Clam Pass Park! Miles and miles of immaculate beaches can be found in this part of Naples though again I want to reiterate that this is a popular spot for those interested in late night parties and perhaps one or two folks will be found stumbling along the beach after one too many beverages.

best beaches in naples florida

We were fortunate to be able to take a morning stroll here before the crowds started arriving but I can certainly understand why this is one of the busiest spots in Naples.

best beaches in naples

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

When you start thinking about the best beaches in Naples, it’s likely you will consider Delnor-Wiggings Pass State Park at the very top of the list. In fact, it’s fair to say that this beach may well qualify for the list of the best beaches around the United States…it’s that spectacular!

best beaches in naples florida

Located in an area void of any high-rise condominiums and developed landscapes, Delnor-Wiggins offers an all-natural environment with perfectly pristine beaches and gorgeous scenery. It’s no surprise to hear that that this is a popular spot which may be a turn-off for many but when you see the inherent beauty here, you will quickly realize that struggling to find a parking space is well worth the effort.

best beaches in naples

Visitors to Delnor-Wiggins will be able to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere while admiring the breathtaking views. Meanwhile for the more adventurous folks out there, opportunities to snorkel the reef and enjoy awesome fishing are all popular activities here.

best beaches in naples florida

Why Visit Naples, Florida?

Whether you are heading to the northern part of Naples to visit Bonita Beach or perhaps the southern beaches on Marco Island, there are plenty to choose from. Many of these beaches offer secluded spots away from the hustle and bustle of city life and certainly offer a relaxing experience second to no other locations around the state.

best beaches in naples florida

Naples beaches are stereotypically associated with seashells and a rich array of wildlife that spend time relaxing on these shorelines (I don’t blame them, it’s pretty awesome here!) For those of you that are a little more adventurous, jet-skiing, sailing and kayaking are all popular activities along this stretch of Naples beach.

best beaches in naples

A visit to Naples is more than just spending time on the beach, though as you can see from the plethora of amazing options, it’s conceivable that you would want to spend your whole trip on the gorgeous white sands. Perhaps you will be inspired to take a trip to Naples Zoo or maybe just take a wander around the downtown neighborhood to satisfy your retail therapy needs.

best beaches in naples

Regardless of what you choose to do, the amazing beaches will always be ready to provide entertainment and a relaxing setting.

Summary

I am not surprised at all to hear that Naples beaches are considered to be among the best throughout the state of Florida. Whether you prefer a secluded beach environment or perhaps a lively scene with plenty of beach activities to get involved with, Naples is home to a variety of beaches (more than I covered here!) that you should want to explore.

For the beach lovers out there, Naples offer a paradise parallel to some of the most breathtaking beaches around the world. It may not be the first place you think about visiting for the ultimate beach vacation but after spending some time here, I am convinced that a return visit will likely be on your radar!

Have you experienced the best beaches in Naples, Florida? Are you a beach lover or do you prefer to head away from the pristine sands to explore the destination?

Why the Belle Meade Plantation Tour Is Amazing Value?

Did you know that Nashville was once home to one of the world’s most prestigious thoroughbred stud farms? It’s true, Belle Meade Plantation is today a historic mansion that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of these grounds and how during the 19th century, Nashville was a renowned location for breeding and training iconic horses that dominated some of the world’s top racing events. A Belle Meade Plantation tour is more than just a history lesson though because there is a myriad of experiences waiting for you inside this gorgeous Nashville location.

belle meade plantation tour

Wandering around the grounds of Belle Meade Plantation is an eye-opening experience because it’s obvious that this was once a prime location in Nashville. Throughout our guided tour of the mansion, we heard stories about how Belle Meade Plantation was a well-recognized location given that it was one of the first places to have light and people would walk along the street and admire the spectacular mansion and grounds.

Explore The Grounds at Belle Meade

The history of Belle Meade dates back to 1807 when John Harding started out with just a single log cabin before becoming a 5,400-acre thoroughbred horse farm. The Greek Revival inspired mansion was constructed by Harding in 1853 and is undoubtedly the focal point of Belle Meade but what about all of the other structures that played such a vital role in the development of this farm?

A stroll around the grounds of Belle Meade today offers visitors the opportunity to explore many of the ‘other’ historic buildings that played an integral role in the upkeep of Belle Meade, at least during the years when this was a flourishing thoroughbred horse farm.

Whether you want to take a peek inside the dairy, horse stable, carriage house or slave cabin, I am sure there are a number of stories related to each of these locations throughout the grounds of Belle Meade.

Walking around outside before heading inside the mansion is a great way to gain a better understanding of the business that played such a pivotal role in shaping the horse racing industry.

I will openly admit that I had no idea how crucial Belle Meade was in training so many thoroughbred horses that would compete in iconic races such as the Epsom Derby in the UK and of course, the Kentucky Derby.

Heather and I had about 45 minutes to explore the outside buildings before our tour started and this provided ample time to just wander around and learn about Belle Meade’s history. We also had an opportunity to head over and admire the gorgeous horses that are present, perhaps looking at a future Derby winner!

Belle Meade Mansion

Step inside the mansion at Belle Meade with us and learn about the Harding generations that helped shape the thriving business that made this such a key location throughout the United States in the horse racing industry.

Unfortunately, our tour guide immediately indicated that no photography was allowed inside the mansion in order to help preserve the original pieces.

Although it’s always disappointing to hear these words, it does allow you to pay more attention to the guide and gain a greater appreciation of your surroundings rather than worrying about capturing that perfect shot.

The interesting aspect of this tour is that the chronological story is shared by a number of different guides throughout the mansion rather than a single guide that is typical of most tours that you take.

As I mentioned, we entered through the front door into the hallway that was 100% devoted to horses with pictures and memorabilia throughout and our first guide gave us a quick history of Belle Meade and it’s original purpose.

Continuing throughout the various rooms, different guides would talk about the purpose of that particular room in addition to some other stories and details about the different generations that lived on the Belle Meade grounds.

One of the most intriguing rooms was “the library” which was transformed into a quiet space where guests were not allowed. Much of the decor inside this room is devoted to the iconic “Iroquois” which was the first American-bred horse to win the prestigious Epsom Derby in England.

Belle Meade Winery

I did mention earlier that there was a little something for everyone during the Belle Meade Plantation tour and regardless of your opinions on the mansion tour, the complimentary wine tasting event immediately after is sure to spark your interest.

For over two centuries wine has been a part of the tradition of hospitality at Belle Meade Plantation.

A short walk from the mansion, we were led into the gift shop and had the opportunity to sample four local wines.

For the wine connoisseurs out there, this is a real opportunity to enjoy a variety of flavors, ranging from local Tennessee traditional options to a classic chardonnay or red wine. We sampled two relatively dry wines and two sweeter options, including an incredibly popular blackberry wine.

Needless to say, we left the experience and the gift shop armed with a new bottle of wine to take with us. The blackberry dessert wine tasted incredible and for $19.99 we were the proud owners of a bottle from the Belle Meade winery.

If you are interested in purchasing these wines, you have to go directly through the winery as they don’t distribute to other suppliers as all the income goes directly back into the mansion and winery.

Summary

If you are planning a trip to Nashville in the near future, we can highly recommend taking the Belle Meade Plantation tour. Different from the stereotypical Nashville experience, this tour offers visitors the opportunity to learn about an area of the city that was once a thriving thoroughbred farm. Plus did I mention the amazing wine tasting experience at the end is pretty spectacular also!

Belle Meade will long live in the minds of those that are familiar with historic horse-breeding establishments and when you think about some of the iconic names such as Secretariat and Seabiscuit, it’s no surprise to hear that they can trace their bloodlines back to this location. Here’s an interesting and pretty astounding fact…every horse to run in the Kentucky Derby since 2003 can be traced back to Belle Meade!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Belle Meade Plantation and would love to go back in the near future, even if it is only to sample more of those amazing wines and purchase a few more bottles to take with us.

Adventures in the UK – A Travel Guide That Will Inspire You To Visit

0

History, heritage, culture, natural beauty, delicious cuisine…when you think of all these combined, there can only be one place that we are referring to – the United Kingdom! Comprising of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the UK is blessed to have a myriad of reasons that should entice visitors from all corners of the globe. There is obviously a hint of bias in this summary given that half of A Brit & A Southerner is from the UK but regardless of this, it’s clearly a breathtaking country that should be high on everyone’s bucket lists if you haven’t already experienced the beauty with your own eyes. If you are looking to experience adventures in the UK, keep reading!

When you think about the UK, what’s the first thing that springs to mind? Perhaps one of the following…

  • London – It’s the first location in the UK that everyone thinks about and for good reason…but don’t let people fool you that this is all there is to see in the UK as you will quickly find out there is so much more!
  • Heritage/Royal Family – The UK is a proud nation and so they should be! The Royal Family may not have as much power as they once did but it’s the rich heritage surrounding this that makes it such a popular attraction for visitors across the globe. Many nations look at this royal hierarchy and can only dream of having something similar.
  • Fish and Chips – Come on folks, a trip to England wouldn’t be the same without sampling the finest fish and chips anywhere in the world (Sorry to those in the Land of Oz as you may argue otherwise but as an avid British connoisseur of local chippy’s, I can well and truly attest that they are the best!)

The list is endless but I want to touch on the first point that we hope to expand upon throughout our blog as we continue to share stories and experiences in the UK. England (or the UK in general) is much more than just London.

adventures in the UK

In fact, I would encourage any first-time visitors to the UK to immediately look outside of the capital city and start exploring some of the other iconic spots throughout the nation.

Adventures in the UK

Let’s start by taking a look at the overall map of the UK and where some of the iconic locations can be found. As I mentioned, the UK is technically divided into four segments (Northern Ireland being the “odd one out” given that the other three are directly connected) and each country (I am not going to get into the argument of whether the ‘four’ should be referred to as a country) offers a unique beauty that perfectly represents that part of the UK.

One of the best aspects about exploring the UK is the convenience of being able to get around and see a plethora of attractions in such a short period of time. You don’t have to worry about driving hundreds of miles like you do in the States to get to your next location and when you combine this with one of the best public transportation networks in the world, it’s an ideal scenario to begin exploring!

England

  • England is blessed to have amazing countryside and there is nothing quite like spending an afternoon taking a scenic drive through the Yorkshire Dales. Alternatively, perhaps heading to the quaint fishing village of Mevagissey in Cornwall is a more attractive prospect but regardless of your taste, there are plenty of awe-inspiring locations.
  • Heather’s favorite spot is the hamlet of Haworth in Yorkshire. The spectacular drive over the Yorkshire Moors offers breathtaking views across an untouched landscape, the only interference being a few sightings of sheep dotted around the fields and iconic stone walls that divide areas of land. When you arrive in the quirky village of Haworth, thoughts of Victorian England spring to mind with the cobblestone streets and tea rooms a perfect reminder of the “good old days.”
  • The English Riviera…we all hear about the stereotypical weather that we associate with England! That’s right, the rain and dreary conditions that typify the weather all year round. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to head to the Spanish Riviera to experience great weather because England’s very own Riviera can be found in Devon by the seaside resort of Torquay. The climate here always seems to be better than other parts of the country so it’s fair to say that when people claim that the “south gets better than the north”, they are likely referring to this part of the UK.
  • We all love football in England! If your upbringing is pretty much anywhere in the UK, you have very little chance of avoiding football. And in my opinion, why would you want to? Take an Old Trafford stadium tour, home of Manchester United to find out exactly why football fans are so passionate about this sport!

Scotland

  • St. Andrews, also referred to as the “Home of Golf,” is a gorgeous town on the east coast that is not only known for its golfing heritage but also for the historic university where Prince William attended. Take a stroll around the town center to appreciate the rich heritage before enjoying a pint of your favorite Scottish ale in the 19th Hole!
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow are the two iconic cities in Scotland but don’t think these are the only spots worth experiencing. If you love mountain climbing, hiking or simply enjoy the spectacular panoramic scenery, be sure to explore the masses of natural environments throughout this country.
  • If you are truly serious about experiencing the best adventures in the UK, don’t forget to keep searching for the Loch Ness monster! You never know what you might stumble across in Scotland.
