Do You Love Football? Enjoy an Old Trafford Stadium Tour

3

If you love football, it’s a no-brainer that you will be familiar with one of the most iconic stadiums in the world – Old Trafford. If you have any plans to visit the city of Manchester, you would be crazy to not consider taking an Old Trafford stadium tour. Home of one of the world’s biggest sports teams by the name of Manchester United, Old Trafford is not only a location famous for the plethora of footballing talent that has graced this field but also because of the rich history that surrounds this football club.

Take a moment to contemplate all of the legends that have set foot on this playing surface. Sir Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to name just a few (I’m sure there will be some MUFC and football fans around the world that will argue these names that I have thrown out!) are some of these key figures that have walked through the tunnel onto this hallowed turf.

When we headed back to England on our recent week visit to spend time with family, we decided now was the time to experience the awesome Old Trafford stadium tour. Let’s take a look at exactly what you will see and why you will be raring to add this to your itinerary, even if you are not a Red Devil fan!

Old Trafford Stadium Tour

Old Trafford is located in the heart of Greater Manchester, just a short distance from the Salford Quays and in the suburb of Stretford. A visit to Old Trafford on a non-match day is certainly going to be much easier than dealing with the 75,000+ fans that can be found at most home matches.

Parking is convenient if you are just visiting for a stadium tour but again, if you are heading here on a match day, I would strongly consider taking public transportation as parking can be a headache.

Old Trafford – Home of the Red Devils

The history of Old Trafford dates back to the start of the 20th century when construction started in 1909 and the original stadium was opened in 1910. If you choose to embark on an Old Trafford stadium tour, you will be lead around some of the most historic landmarks while visiting Old Trafford alone will take you along some of the iconic streets surrounding the stadium that have been named after some of Manchester United’s greatest stars.

Sir. Matt Busby Way is the main street that Old Trafford is located on but recently Sir. Alex Ferguson had both a stand inside the stadium and also a street named after his successful tenure at the helm of Manchester United.

Simply walking around the grounds at Old Trafford makes you have goosebumps on your back as you realize just historic this stadium is in the world of football.

As we strolled around the outside, we caught a glimpse of two of the most iconic memorials in world football. Again, Sir. Matt Busby can be seen by the Manchester United Megastore as he peers down at all of the fans that walk around the stadium before entering.

In front of this statue is another tribute, this time to the club’s “holy trinity” comprising of Dennis Law, George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton (entitled “The United Trinity!”)

Enough about the history of Old Trafford because you could easily spend all day reminiscing about this historic stadium but instead, let’s hop inside and take a look at what you can expect on your guided tour.

The Theatre of Dreams

After spending a few minutes wandering around the museum, we headed to the first floor where we met our friendly tour guide who introduced herself and immediately started our tour of Old Trafford. It didn’t take long before we entered the “Theatre of Dreams” as we stood about half way up the Sir Alex Ferguson stand overlooking this historic pitch.

old trafford stadium tour

Our guide gave us a brief history of the stadium and then shared some interesting facts about the pitch itself, most notably the construction which is a “Desso GrassMaster” (combination of natural grass mixed with artificial fibers).

manchester united old trafford

The view of the surface was slightly obstructed by a number of lights that were being used to create artificial sunlight, clearly an example of the intricate details a football club goes to in order to ensure the playing surface is perfect.

old trafford stadium tour

Standing in an empty stadium creates an eerie silence but it does give you an opportunity to close your eyes for a few moments and contemplate the sound of 75,000 fans cheering on their beloved Red Devils.

old trafford stadium tour

Manchester United are renowned for having some of the passionate fans in world football and it’s no surprise to hear that every season they sell out almost every match that is played at Old Trafford, including cup competitions.

The tour continued by heading inside the stadium as we passed by pictures of some of the iconic legends associated with Manchester United, before walking out directly in front of the away fans contingent at the Stretford End of the ground.

This is a great spot for taking photographs of the stadium as we were at ground level and were able to admire the magnitude and size of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and opposite Sir Bobby Charlton stand.

Behind the Scenes – The Changing Rooms

Ready for your moment in the spotlight? After passing through the press room where the likes of Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson gave some of their infamous post-match press conferences, we headed to the home and away changing rooms to see what the current day players experienced before and after a match.

As we entered the home dressing room, we were greeted by all of the current Manchester United match day squad shirts on the hooks.

Whether you are a Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Wayne Rooney fan, you have an opportunity to take a selfie with your favorite player.

It may not be the same as actually taking a picture with the real player but it’s a pretty close second!

old trafford stadium tour

The away dressing room is in stark contrast to the home as it appears very basic but according to our tour guide, it’s intentionally done this way as all football clubs generally ensure the home dressing room is equipped with better decor and equipment.

manchester united away dressing room

You have to make the home advantage count for something right! It was certainly a little strange to see some of Manchester United’s iconic stars shirts in here, including David Beckham to represent when he played for AC Milan on his return to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

old trafford stadium tour

Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robin Van Persie are a couple of other examples of United legends that have graced both dressing rooms.

Walking out of the Tunnel

Leaving the dressing rooms, we headed into the tunnel and prepared for our moment of glory as Manchester United players (or Liverpool if you found yourself on the opposing side!)

old trafford stadium tour

The background music started and the referee (aka our tour guide) lead us down the tunnel and into the Theatre of Dreams.

old trafford stadium tour

We weren’t able to walk on the playing surface but we did have the opportunity to walk alongside the field and sit in the dugout where the manager and substitutes sit during the match.

old trafford stadium tour

This was the perfect end to our tour and we even saw the original tunnel that is the only remaining part of the original 1910 stadium, having survived the bombing that destroyed much of Old Trafford during World War II.

It’s appropriate that this tunnel was renamed the Munich Tunnel in 2008, as a memorial for the 50th anniversary of the 1958 Munich air disaster.

The Museum

After bidding farewell to our tour guide after an incredibly informative experience around Old Trafford, we headed back inside the museum to admire some of the trophies that Manchester United have won over the years.

The Champions League trophy is perhaps the most prestigious and can be seen inside a revolving cabinet in the heart of the trophy room but if you are a true Red Devil fan, the 13 Premier League trophies will create amazing memories of Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.

Walking through the Hall of Fame gives you an opportunity to see all of the players that have worn the Manchester United shirt and offers tributes to some of the legends that stole the hearts of United fans around the world.

There is also a poignant tribute to the 1958 Munich Disaster which killed a number of the Manchester United players and staff.

Summary

I think it’s fair to say that any football supporter or sports fan in general, would be CRAZY to not want to experience the Old Trafford stadium tour. Not only is this the home to one of the world’s iconic football teams, it is a place steeped with rich history and heritage that you immediately feel as you stand inside the stadium.

Heather is an avid fan of the “Red Devils”, so having the opportunity to visit the Megastore after the tour and purchase some official merchandise to take back across the pond was certainly something that she enjoyed.

old trafford stadium tour

Although I am not a United fan, I will never forget the Champions League final in 1999 at the Nou Camp in Barcelona when they were trailing 1-0 heading into injury time against Bayern Munich. One of the most famous turnarounds happened during “Fergie Time” and that will always stick with me as one of the great football memories of all time.

If you have the opportunity to visit Manchester (we always strongly encourage folks from the States to head to other parts of the UK rather than just staying in London!), be sure to add an Old Trafford stadium tour to your itinerary!

Aratiatia Dam – How to Enjoy the Full Force of the Waikato River?

Nature has a strange way of capturing your attention when you consider the power it possesses. It’s only in times of natural disasters such as major flooding do we realize just how much water can impact our lives, so having the opportunity to watch a controlled flood via the opening of a dam is an experience we can all learn from. The opening of the Aratiatia Dam located in the Taupo region of New Zealand is a great example that we recently watched from an amazing viewpoint.

Aratiatia Dam

The Aratiatia Dam may not be one of the more infamous dams around the world but the landscapes throughout the Waikato gorge make this one of the most incredible experiences.

Having spent the morning experiencing the breathtaking sight of Huka Falls just a few miles from the Aratiatia Dam, we headed to this man-made attraction looking forward to seeing how powerful the Waikato River really was.

Aratiatia Dam

Let’s take a look at two very distinctive canyons before and after the Aratiatia Dam opened.

Aratiatia Dam

Aratiatia Dam Information

The Aratiatia Dam opens three times each day (four times daily in the summer) releasing 80,000 liters of water in a short amount of time. As you will see from our images, the instant change from a calm river canyon to the onrushing sight of waves crashing through this gorge is incredible.

Aratiatia Dam

Here are the daily times of the dam opening:

  • 10:00 AM
  • 12:00 PM
  • 2:00 PM
  • 4:00 PM (Summer only – October to April)

aratiatia dam

We are no experts on the topic of nature but having watched this attraction in full force, I think it’s fair to say the old adage “Don’t Mess With Fire” could easily be changed to “Don’t Mess With Water!”

Aratiatia Dam new zealand

Important Safety Tips

I want to emphasize the importance of staying safe when visiting attractions like this so please be sure to read these safety tips that I have paraphrased in certain parts but are all applicable to the Aratiatia Dam.

Aratiatia rapids

Unfortunately, there have been horrendous fatal stories of swimmers enjoying the calm waters of the Waikato River and ignoring the sirens from the dam but when you see the power of this water with your own eyes, you realize this is not something to be arguing with.

Aratiatia Dam

Be sure to follow these guidelines if you are intending on visiting these rapids because it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry:

  • Stay out of the Aratiatia Rapids at all times. Never swim or kayak in this area, especially minutes prior to the dam opening!
  • Observe all safety warnings and signs. Treat the gorge and downstream pools as operational and live at all times, regardless of whether there are active sirens.
  • Fences define safe areas and difficult terrain also forms a natural barrier, so don’t even attempt to find the ‘perfect’ viewing point if it is beyond a barrier.
  • Sirens blare at intervals before each release of the water.
  • Follow the safety signs that are located throughout this attraction!

Enough of the negative stories…if you abide by the rules, you will have an amazing time watching human intervention and nature creating an epic experience!

Aratiatia Dam

Overlooks and Hiking Trails

The beauty of watching the opening of the Aratiatia Dam is that there are a number of awesome overlooks and vantage points where you can appreciate this. If you have enough time and want to appreciate the full extent of the experience, it’s probably wise to watch this multiple times from various overlooks.

Aratiatia Dam overlook

If you have no desire to go hiking, you can walk across the bridge that crosses the dam and admire the canyon below you as the water comes crashing through the moment it opens.

Aratiatia Dam canyon

Alternatively, there are a couple of hiking trails that are easy to navigate and provide a close-up view of the canyon. We opted for the shorter of the two trails and honestly, this appears to be the best location rather than the furthest point though from there you can look back and appreciate the full extent of the canyon.

Aratiatia Dam overlooks

A short 10-minute walk along a gravel path leads to the final stretch which is the most challenging as you clamber down a couple of rocks to the viewing platform. There are a couple of levels to the platform, so dependent on personal preference you can choose where you want to watch the Aratiatia Dam opening.

Aratiatia Dam

We arrived about 15 minutes prior to the show and had our choice of finding the best viewing point. Fellow visitors continued to arrive while the sirens could be heard indicating the dam was opening in a few minutes (there are multiple sirens at different intervals to give you notice of the imminent opening).

Aratiatia Dam

The moment the dam started to open the floodgates literally opened! I am not sure what any of us were really expecting but the first few minutes are quite surreal as the water slowly fills the first pool close to the dam.

Aratiatia Rapids

However, the moment the water spills over into the gorge, it begins rushing through with nothing in its way to stop the Waikato River from flooding. The waves crash through the gorge like a Formula 1 car zipping through a chicane at high-speed.

Aratiatia Dam

The dam gates are left open for 15 minutes during which the gorge is completely flooded and in both directions, a sight of white foam can be seen as the powerful surge continues to drive through the canyon into the calmer waters further downstream.

Aratiatia Dam

Although we didn’t stay until the water levels receded following the closing of the dam, it’s interesting to see how very different it can be after a few minutes of 80,000 liters of water passing through.

Aratiatia Dam

Summary

If you are looking for things to do around Lake Taupo, it’s inevitable that Huka Falls will be at the top of your priority list given that it’s New Zealand’s most popular attraction.

Aratiatia Dam

Be prepared to arrange your itinerary so that you can experience at least one opening of the Aratiatia Dam because the views through the gorge are some of the most spectacular throughout the North Island.

Aratiatia Dam

We enjoyed relaxing at the overlook while capturing some great pictures and videos of this experience.

Aratiatia Dam

We were able to share some live footage of the dam opening to our followers on Instagram and Facebook and I’m sure we will make a return trip here the next time we visit New Zealand. The best part of this attraction – it’s FREE!

Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour – Why Is It the Best Attraction?

5

When you think about poignant places around the world such as Ground Zero, the Berlin Wall, Chernobyl, and Auschwitz, it’s inevitable that Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu will be on this list. We have been fortunate to experience several of these iconic locations across the globe but having visited Hawaii recently, we had the opportunity to take the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour and I have to admit, this is one of the most heartrending and historic places we have visited anywhere.

pearl harbor memorial tour

If you are visiting Honolulu, you would be crazy not to make an effort to head over to Pearl Harbor and experience the sense of poignancy and history that surrounds this attraction today.

Many of the aforementioned attractions have been transformed into “tourist traps” and I personally think this is far from the truth at Pearl Harbor, primarily because the USS Arizona Memorial is the resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed in the tragic attack in 1941.

pearl harbor memorial tour

We want to share our experience taking the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour and after reading this, perhaps you will be inspired to take a trip to Hawaii just to visit this amazing place. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Hawaii also, but this is definitely a place you cannot afford to miss and should be experienced by everyone at least once in their lifetime.

Pearl Harbor History

Everyone has at least a basic understanding of the significance of Pearl Harbor simply because of the role it played in shaping the world we live in today. Without going into an in-depth history lesson of World War II, the events that took place on December 7, 1941, were ultimately the turning point for the United States entering the war and joining the Allies in defeating the Nazis and Japanese, albeit on two separate fronts.

pearl harbor

I realize that younger generations like myself and Heather will never be able to relate to the events that took place but we can still appreciate the heartache and tragedy that everyone associated with this went through.

pearl harbor

I can only imagine what friends and families of those directly impacted by Pearl Harbor go through when they step foot on the USS Arizona Memorial or walk around the museum that portrays everything that occurred.

Our visit to Pearl Harbor was shortly after President Obama and Prime Minister Abe of Japan visited this scene, an iconic date in history given that it was the first time the two leaders of the nations have come together at the spot where Japanese fighter planes struck American soil on that fateful day in 1941.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour Information

It’s no surprise to hear that the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour is extremely popular, especially trying to get tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial. We will share a few insider secrets with you later based on our experience but let’s first take a look at some of the key information if you are planning a trip to Pearl Harbor.

pearl harbor tour

USS Arizona Memorial

There are essentially two ways to get tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial. The best aspect of visiting this iconic memorial is that it is 100% FREE.

  1. Walk-In Tickets – 1,300 tickets are handed out daily starting at 7:00 AM. These tickets include a 75-minute program consisting of a short documentary/movie and a boat ride out to the USS Arizona Memorial. Be prepared to get to Pearl Harbor EARLY if you are wanting to guarantee your spot on this tour because these 1,300 tickets go quickly!
  2. Advanced Tickets – Purchase tickets online up to two months in advance of your expected visit. We found that many of these tickets were already sold out, so for us, this wasn’t a viable option!

There is a third way to get tickets that I will share with you shortly as we share our experiences at Pearl Harbor.

Tour Schedule

The USS Arizona Memorial program is scheduled every 15 minutes starting at 7:30 AM and the final one running at 3:00 PM.

Audio Tours

We experienced a self-guided audio tour of Pearl Harbor and we can highly recommend this option. It’s a great way to learn more information about the events leading up to the attack, during the tragedy and the immediate aftermath.

You can purchase audio tour headsets at the Visitor Information window at Pearl Harbor for only $7.50 and these are great value for the wealth of information you receive.

USS Bowfin Tickets

A visit to Pearl Harbor may primarily be focused on the USS Arizona Memorial but if you have the opportunity to experience the USS Bowfin submarine, this is a great attraction. Tickets are available to tour the submarine and museum as follows:

Adults – $12
Children (Aged 4-12) – $5

If you are a little claustrophobic and prefer to just explore the museum, tickets are $6 and $3. Be sure to check the USS Bowfin website for any price updates.

After collecting our headsets, we started our journey around Pearl Harbor at the two museums which are honestly a great place to start if you need some additional background information on the history here.

The two museums are aptly named “The Attack on Pearl Harbor Museum” and “Road to War Museum” and provide a detailed review of everything that happened in 1941.

japanese attack on pearl harbor

A number of artifacts along with the audio coverage frequently create chilling encounters of the Japanese creating their master plan to attack Pearl Harbor.

pearl harbor tour

Regardless of your nationality or knowledge of these events, you have to appreciate that this was a well-measured and calculated attack that took this key American location by surprise in the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

japan attack pearl harbor

There are a number of videos depicting this attack and I’m sure that anyone visiting Pearl Harbor with a direct relationship with someone that was either killed or affected by the 1941 events, would cringe at the thought of what actually happened.

The recordings of survivors that shared their experiences offer a lasting impression on the Pearl Harbor Memorial tour and this is before you even set foot on the USS Arizona.

The stealthy, calculated risk of the Japanese approaching by air was something that was unheard of and certainly underestimated by the American defenses.

The moment the first line of attacks started by destroying key airbases around Hawaii to prevent American planes from leading a defensive front, the Japanese bombardment continued as they destroyed everything in their sight…most notably the naval warships that were docked in Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Outdoor Exhibits

The audio tour leads you through both museums and then outside to some of the other exhibits that play an integral role in the history of Pearl Harbor.

The “Tree of Life”, designed by architect Alfred Preis, is a symbolic representation of rebirth, renewal and a reminder that we are all interconnected despite the obvious hatred that was present between the two nations directly impacted by the 1941 attack.

A short walk from the Tree of Life is the USS Arizona bell which was salvaged and restored along with one other and today provides a perfect location for visitors to contemplate in a moment of solitude as they gaze around the Pearl Harbor grounds.

Depending on the time of your boat tour out to the USS Arizona Memorial, you may opt to head over to the Contemplation Circle and Remembrance Circle to pay your respects to those lives lost.

As you look over the Harbor, take a moment to consider what life was like minutes before the attack and then the turmoil that Pearl Harbor was thrown into once the first Japanese strike took place.

The USS Arizona anchor stands proudly on display as visitors walk by but in the back of our minds, we were trying to figure out how we could get on board the USS Arizona Memorial boat tour.

uss arizona anchor

Let’s take a look at how you can experience this amazing tour if you are not fortunate enough to have advanced reservations.

USS Arizona Memorial

If you are unlucky or simply unprepared (I think we fall into both of these categories), you may visit Pearl Harbor without a pre-booked USS Arizona Memorial tour. Don’t worry, there is a third option that I was referring to earlier.

uss arizona

If you walk over to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater shortly before a scheduled tour is about to depart, you will notice an additional line with a board indicating “stand by line”. This is where you can wait and hope for the best. The likelihood is that people will miss their tour and there will be open seats available, so just be prepared to wait and you will have the opportunity to experience this amazing memorial.

uss arizona memorial

The first part of the USS Arizona Memorial is a short video that shows the attack on Pearl Harbor and the damage that was caused to the US naval fleet. At the end of the video, the doors open and you are lead out to the boat dock where you board a small vessel and head over to the USS Arizona.

You have the opportunity to take pictures of the memorial as you approach it but don’t worry if you are on the wrong side of the boat because you will have plenty of chances when you leave to take a picture.

The moment we deboarded and stepped on the memorial, we realized that this was a place that deserved nothing but 100% respect.

uss arizona oil leak

There is a somber mood throughout the air as you walk around the memorial and peer over the side as you realize that you are standing over the burial spot of thousands of soldiers.

I think it’s a fitting tribute that these men were laid to rest onboard the USS Arizona and perhaps the craziest aspect is that small amounts of oil still leak from the vessel, yet it is allowed to take place as this is a perfect representation of the “tears of the Arizona”.

The marble wall at the end of the memorial depicts all of the names of the sailors who died aboard the Arizona.

USS Bowfin

Have you ever imagined what life is like onboard a submarine? Visiting Pearl Harbor offers the perfect opportunity to experience this as you board the USS Bowfin and head down inside the submarine.

You quickly appreciate what the naval officers go through because it’s immediately noticeable that there is not much space inside a submarine.

Referred to as the “Pearl Harbor Avenger”, the USS Bowfin was launched one year after the December 7, 1941 attack.

After nine successful patrols and sinking 44 enemy ships during the war, the USS Bowfin was laid to rest in the waters of Pearl Harbor and today visitors have the opportunity to experience what it was like to live and work aboard a World War II submarine.

Summary

What an amazing experience!! There is really no other way to describe our feelings after spending an afternoon taking the Pearl Harbor Memorial Tour. You could easily spend all day here paying your respects and learning the details about everything that occurred in 1941 but regardless of how much time you spend here, it’s a memorial you just have to experience when you next visit the island of Oahu.

pearl harbor memorial tour

The USS Arizona Memorial is the undoubted focal point of any Pearl Harbor visit and don’t forget, even if you don’t have tickets or fail to wake early enough to collect one of the 1,300 daily tickets handed out, you can always head over to the stand by line and hopefully enjoy this awesome experience.

Huka Falls – Why You Need to Visit This Natural Attraction?

New Zealand is blessed with having a myriad of amazing natural attractions scattered across both islands. Although we only spent a short amount of time exploring the North Island, we stumbled across many of these breathtaking natural phenomena including Huka Falls located in the heart of the island. If you are not familiar with this raging waterfall, we are confident that after seeing our experience, you will be ready to book a trip to New Zealand just for this attraction alone.

Having spent an amazing week traveling around the North Island, our final day in New Zealand arrived with us both feeling a little disappointed that our time here was coming to an end. We wanted to finish with an amazing experience and decided to take the drive from Hamilton where we had stayed the night before to the Lake Taupo region. I think it’s fair to say the day turned out way better than we could have ever imagined!

huka falls new zealand

Let’s take a look at why Huka Falls immediately caught our attention and provided ample entertainment for our time at this spectacular location. It will be no surprise to find out that this is New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction!

Where is Huka Falls?

Huka Falls are a set of gorgeous waterfalls on the Waikato River connected to Lake Taupo which is just a few miles from this landmark. It may not have the height of some of the world’s most iconic waterfalls but what it doesn’t have in height, it certainly makes up for with power and beauty.

huka falls

Located inside the Wairakei Tourist Park, it is just a five-minute drive from the town of Taupo and is also easily reached from a number of locations around the North Island.

  • Hamilton to Huka Falls – 148 km (1 hr 50 minutes)
  • Auckland to Huka Falls – 273 km (3 hr 25 minutes)
  • Rotorua to Huka Falls – 77 km (58 minutes)

After spending some time at Huka Falls, we headed to the town center of Taupo to explore the lake and downtown area. We noticed that you can actually walk/bike all the way from Taupo to Huka Falls along the banks of the river via Spa Thermal Park and this would certainly be a really cool adventure if time permitted.

huka falls

History of Huka Falls

Did you know that the word “Huka” is a Maori term for “foam”? It’s quite appropriate that these falls are referred to as “Foam Falls” given the amount that is created every second the water flows over the edge.

waikato river gorge

You may also be interested to know that Huka Falls was created because of the narrowing of the Waikato River. For much of the river’s length, it is approximately 100 meters wide but it abruptly narrows as it approaches Huka Falls creating a powerful surge as the water scrambles to get through the narrow gap.

waikato river

Approximately 26,000 years ago, the narrowing of the Waikato canyon was created when the Oruanui eruption of Taupo Volcano took place. Renowned as one of New Zealand’s largest volcanic eruptions, this helped shape the gorge we see today and certainly we can thank this devastating phenomenon for creating Huka Falls.

HERE YOU WILL SEE ONE OF THE GREAT NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD IN ACTION!

Anyone visiting Taupo should take the time to experience this amazing natural wonder because it’s fair to say that everyone visiting here will certainly leave feeling they have seen one of the “natural wonders of the world.”

Adventure Junkies Jet Boat Experience

Did I mention you can actually hop on board a high-powered jet boat and cruise right up to the base of the majestic Huka Falls? Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to wait for the next available jet boat so we had to enjoy the view of the jet boat from the various overlooks at Huka Falls.

huka falls jet boat

Don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed and although I’m convinced nothing can match the actual experience onboard the boat, it’s a pretty good alternative to just sit back and watch.

huka falls jet boat

We strongly recommend booking this experience ahead of time if you really want to don your adventure junkie hat and prepare for the experience of a lifetime. This is the ultimate thrill a minute ride and just watching these folks was enough to send chills down my spine.

huka falls jet boat

The large volume of water flowing over the falls amounts to approximately 220,000 liters per second so imagine taking a jet boat to the base of these falls and feeling the force of the water. The guides driving the jet boats are certainly experienced to know exactly where to go and how to handle this power.

huka falls new zealand

Tickets for the Huka Falls Jet Boat are NZD 125 for adults ($90) and NZD 79 for children under 15. The experience lasts 30 minutes and for only NZD 19 you can have an “instant replay” and do it all over again.

Walking Trails at Huka Falls

Get ready to put on your favorite hiking boots and explore the amazing trails and overlooks at Huka Falls. Regardless of your hiking skills, there is something here for everyone with trails ranging from 5 minutes to 2 hours in length.

huka falls new zealand

We took a couple of the shorter trails to find the perfect vantage points to admire the breathtaking sight of the cascading waterfalls. As we crossed the bridge that connects both sides of the Waikato River, we caught our first glimpse of Huka Falls. There is seriously A LOT of power in the water that is rushing through this gorge and over the edge of the falls.

huka falls

Another noticeable aspect of Huka Falls is the color of the water. The crystal blue color of the water combined with the vibrant white of the cascading falls and the surrounding terrain create a picture-perfect landscape for avid photographers.

huka falls

Every overlook provides a slightly different angle to capture that perfect shot and trust me when I say, there are plenty of perfect moments to be found here!

A MILLION CAMERAS MUST’VE CLICKED HERE, RECORDING THIS WATERY SPECTACLE. (SELWYN TOOGOOD)

huka falls

There is a two-hour trail that will wind you through scenic surroundings until you arrive at the Aratiatia Dam, another awesome attraction worth visiting if you are in the Taupo area.

huka falls

We didn’t have enough time to walk this whole trail but we did take another short hike to gain a better view of Huka Falls from a distance and again enjoy another rendition of the jet boat cruising through the waves to the base of the waterfall.

Summary

We have been fortunate to visit a number of gorgeous waterfalls around the world including Niagara Falls but there was something quite spectacular about Huka Falls that immediately got us “hooked.” It may sound a little cheesy to say that we were “hooked by Huka Falls” but sometimes it’s just appropriate to coin a phrase that actually applies and that’s definitely the case here.

huka falls

During our next visit to New Zealand, we will make sure that we have more time to explore Huka Falls and the surrounding area so that we can enjoy all of the gorgeous hiking trails.

huka falls north island

One final recommendation, don’t visit Huka Falls without booking a trip on board the jet boat! This is 100% top of our bucket list for our next visit to this part of the North Island.

Great Ocean Road Day Trip – Is It Worth the Time and Money?

Stretches of rugged, untouched coastlines are stereotypical of much of Australia’s perimeter but there is one iconic area that stands out among every other part of the nation. If you are visiting Melbourne or anywhere in the state of Victoria, be sure to add a Great Ocean Road day trip to your itinerary because this is the ultimate example of breathtaking wilderness.

Having spent plenty of time reading about this amazing experience and admiring spectacular photographs of the Twelve Apostles and other landmarks along the Great Ocean Road, it was time to experience this route for ourselves. Exploring the Melbourne CBD may be a great way to spend your first 48 hours in Australia but there is nothing quite like heading out to experience the natural beauty of this nation.

For some accommodation ideas with charm along the Great Ocean Road, you may check out this blog on Great Ocean Road Accommodation for a Romantic Getaway by HotelsCombined.

How to Enjoy the Great Ocean Road

Let’s take a look at the options available to experience this drive.

  • Self-Guided Tour – Rent a car and experience the drive at your own pace. This is a great option if you are considering an overnight stay along this route. It also gives you the opportunity to spend more time at certain overlooks and attractions rather than relying on your tour guide.
  • Guided Tour Day Trip – There are plenty of Australian tour operators that will pick you up directly from your hotel in Melbourne and take you on a day trip along the Great Ocean Road. This is the option we opted for.
  • Guided Tour Multi-Day Trip – Similar to above, you can experience a guided tour across multiple days where your accommodation along the Great Ocean Road is pre-booked and you can enjoy the drive at a slower pace.

Great Ocean Road Day Trip

We contemplated renting a car but visiting Melbourne in the heart of peak season meant this was a pretty expensive option. Our alternative that we opted for was to take a day trip tour courtesy of Sightseeing Tours Australia.

I am always skeptical prior to taking “guided” day trips because you are frequently taken to tourist traps but we can well and truly attest this experience was anything but a stereotypical tourist adventure.

Staying at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park, we hopped on the free tram to Flinders Street Station. We met our guide and the other members of our party outside St. Paul’s Cathedral at 7:15 AM and knew that it was going to be a long day (check our section below on how to be prepared before meeting your guide).

great ocean road day trip

Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and always looking to take us “off the beaten path” away from the large volumes of tourists. Having driven this route for years, she knew all the spots where the regular tour vehicles would visit and she provided alternative recommendations that we all appreciated.

The below map shows the route we took on the journey to the furthest point before we started heading back to Melbourne via the quicker ‘inland’ route through Geelong.

great ocean road day trip

Throughout the 12 hour journey, our guide shared stories and adventures that she had experienced along this route but for much of the time, she just allowed us to take in the breathtaking scenery surrounding us.

Prepare for the Great Ocean Road

I want to start by giving you a few useful hints and tips that would have been extremely beneficial for us had we known what to expect along the Great Ocean Road.

  1. Food/Drinks – You are going to be outside of Melbourne for a long time (about 12 hours or so), so be prepared to have some snacks and water/drinks with you. Your tour guide will give you the opportunity to purchase items along the route and lunch will be included. However, in some of the smaller towns, selections may be limited and you will likely pay inflated prices.
  2. Bug Repellent – This really should be number one on the list! If you are visiting during the summer, be prepared to have swarms (and I literally mean HUGE SWARMS) of annoying bugs all over you throughout the Great Ocean Road. They save the worst bugs until last and it’s ironic really because it’s the most spectacular spot on the route – the Twelve Apostles.
  3. Camera and Back-Up – Don’t forget to charge your camera battery! This will be one of your biggest regrets if you get out on the Great Ocean Road and don’t have the opportunity to capture memories that you will cherish forever. The landscapes are stunning and this is one of those stretches of coastline where even novice photographers can capture amazing shots – it’s that photogenic of a region!
  4. Wear Appropriate Attire – Melbourne is renowned for experiencing all of the seasons in one day so be prepared for anything when you hit the Great Ocean Road. If you take a guided day trip as we did, the majority of the time will be spent cooped up inside a mini-bus but there will be ample opportunities to get out and stretch your legs.

Ok, so you are all set and raring to go! Let’s take a look at some of the highlight locations you can expect to see on a Great Ocean Road day trip.

great ocean road day trip

Point Addis

Welcome to the Great Ocean Road! Our first stop was certainly a great way to start our experience and the moment we arrived at Point Addis, an overlook near Torquay, we realized that all of the rumors about this coastline were true.

great ocean road day trip

We only spent about 15 minutes here but despite the persisent rain all the way from Melbourne to this point, we arrived just in time to enjoy spectacular views across the ocean (Bass Strait) with little precipitation to worry about.

great ocean road day trip

The coastline at Point Addis is characterized by rugged sandstone and limestone cliffs that are visibly crumbling but create an amazing effect when capturing photographs of this landscape.

point addis great ocean road

If you are taking a self-guided tour of the Great Ocean Road and choose to visit Point Addis, perhaps you will have time to head down and enjoy the white sandy beaches that were visible from the overlook.

great ocean road day trip

This is unsurprisingly a popular spot for surfers just like much of the Great Ocean Road coastline. However, if you are looking for the perfect vantage point to capture your first glimpse of this amazing coastline, Point Addis is definitely a great place to visit.

Teddy’s Lookout

Our journey continued as we left Point Addis and headed towards the town of Lorne, just a few miles further south.

teddy's lookout

Another popular tourist town in the heart of peak season, our guide opted to stay away from the crowds (she really did keep to her word!) and headed to a spot known as Teddy’s Lookout.

great ocean road day trip

A short drive from the town center saw us climb a pretty steep incline until we arrived at Teddy’s Lookout.

teddy's lookout great ocean road

There are a number of short walking trails that you can take to experience viewing platforms that overlook breathtaking coastal views and the winding Great Ocean Road.

teddys lookout great ocean road

Fern covered gorges and an area of mountaineous terrain are visible to the right while avid hikers may take this opportunity to head deep into the wilderness to experience Australian wildlife along the banks of the Saint George River.

We took this opportunity to grab morning tea as our guide generously provided coffee, tea and biscuits before we continued our adventure along the Great Ocean Road.

Kennett River

Any road trip around Australia wouldn’t be the same without having the opportunity to stumble across a wild koala.

kennett river holiday park

Don’t worry, the Kennett River Holiday Park was our next stop because this was apparently the perfect spot to see koalas enjoying life…ok, well sleeping but that’s pretty much what they do all day except for eating.

koala kennett river

Not only did we experience several koalas taking a snooze in the trees we also enjoyed had the opportunity to feed a bunch of colorful Australian parrots that were friendly enough to fly and land pretty much anywhere they could find…such as your arm or even the top of your head!

great ocean road day trip

Kennett River also was an opportunity to grab bug repellent but of course, if you follow our handy packing tips you will already have this with you!

great ocean road day trip

Grab a snack or a coffee in the wonderfully named “Kafe Koala” but I would probably recommend eating around this cafe rather than wandering where those mischievous birds can find you.

Apollo Bay

After an action-packed morning we were excited to visit Apollo Bay which was going to be our destination for lunch. A unanimous decision was made to get take-out pizza and head down to the beach to enjoy lunch in typical Aussie style.

apollo bay great ocean road

Unfortunately, I have to admit that the majority of us were a little disappointed because despite the pizza being delicious, the experience was spoiled because of those pesky flies that literally won’t leave you alone especially with the smell of food around.

great ocean road

I am all for sampling local traditions and enjoying pizza on the beach is clearly one of those but trying to deal with all those flies really ruins your appetite.

great ocean road day trip

Although lunch was a proverbial disaster, we did have enough time to enjoy Apollo Bay and take a stroll along the harbour which certainly made up for our earlier disappointment.

Maits Rest Rainforest

Ready for a complete change of scenery? I am sure by now you are probably tired of those awful panoramic views from the Great Ocean Road…ok, that’s a slight exaggeration because you can NEVER get enough of this amazing scenery.

maits rest rainforest

Don’t worry, we will be heading back to the coast soon but first let’s take a look at Maits Rest Rainforest, a short 15 minute drive from Apollo Bay.

maits rest rainforest

If you have ever dreamed of wandering through the Amazon rainforest, now is your chance to experience something similar on a much smaller scale and without the fear of stumbling across a venomous snake or spider.

great ocean road day trip

The Maits Rest Rainforest trail is an 800-meter self-guided walkway that you can enjoy at your own leisurely pace while admiring the amazing rainforest that surrounds you.

maits rest rainforest

It’s possible that you may be fortunate enough to see a variety of wildlife including swamp wallabies, koalas, ring-tailed possums and even the potential sighting of a grey kangaroo.

great ocean road day trip

Unfortunately our visit lacked any of these sightings but despite this, we were still able to enjoy the amazing scenery all around us. Walking through a rainforest is actually a really cool experience and not something everyone gets to experience very often.

Twelve Apostles

It’s the iconic spot that everyone driving the Great Ocean Road is looking forward to seeing. The Twelve Apostles…are they really worth the wait or are they just another glorified tourist trap? I think the following images answer that question because this natural attraction is breathtaking.

twelve apostles

Having experienced overcast conditions through much of our journey along the Great Ocean Road, we were blessed to find some sunshine (in addition to thousands of flies!) that welcomed us to the site of the Twelve Apostles. This collection of limestone stacks were formed by erosion caused by the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean.

great ocean road twelve apostles

Today, we can admire the remaining eight stacks as the others have already collapsed. It’s feasible that it’s only a matter of time before all of them disappear due to the continued weathering caused by the extreme waves. The only thing that we can guarantee is that if you make the effort to visit this landmark, you cannot help but be impressed.

twelve apostles

Standing at the top of the overlook admiring the Twelve Apostles is well worth the 12 hours cramped inside a mini-bus. If you don’t enjoy anything else on your Great Ocean Road day trip, I am convinced that you will enjoy this location!

great ocean road day trip

Loch Ard Gorge

Need a few moments to catch your breath after experiencing the Twelve Apostles. It’s ok, our journey along the Great Ocean Road is almost complete but our penultimate stop was at a spot known as Loch Ard Gorge.

great ocean road loch ard gorge

This is another great spot to take a quick hike to capture some breathtaking views looking back across the Twelve Apostles but there is another magical spot that you have to experience here – the Gorge.

loch ard gorge

By the time you reach this spot, you will have seen a plethora of amazing rock formations throughout the Great Ocean Road journey. The Loch Ard Gorge is no different but what makes this location stand out from the rest is the turquoise colored waters that make this a paradise for folks to relax and take a swim before heading back to Melbourne.

great ocean road day trip

There are a number of trails that you can experience if you prefer to stay on the move but we are so glad that our final act was to take the staircase to the beach in front of Loch Ard Gorge and spend a few minutes enjoying a location that is the epitome of natural beauty.

Summary

Taking a Great Ocean Road day trip is a jaw-dropping experience, there really is no other way to describe it. We spent a total of AUD 192 ($147) to take this 12-hour day trip and there is no question that this was probably the best value of anything we experiencing during our epic three week adventure around the world.

great ocean road

The focal point of the Great Ocean Road are the Twelve Apostles and they are well and truly worth the wait.

Would I take this drive again? Definitely! However, I think next time we would prefer to take a rental car and spend some more time at certain spots along this drive. The views are awe-inspiring throughout the drive and it’s fair to say that backup battery will come in handy as you create thousands of memories.

great ocean road day trip

As we take time to reminisce on this amazing journey we want to thank our guide for sharing such valuable information and also for creating an experience we will never forget.

Have you experienced the Great Ocean Road? Are there other iconic drives in Australia that you would recommend us visiting the next time we head to the Land of Oz?

Huey’s Restaurant – Does It Have the Best Burger in Memphis?

If you love a good burger, we have the perfect spot for you! Memphis may be famous for their world-famous barbecue but after visiting Huey’s Restaurant in Germantown, we can truly attest that this is a great restaurant to sample a burger. It’s no surprise to hear that Huey’s has been voted as having the ‘Best Burger’ by the Memphis Magazine EVERY YEAR since 1984.

Memphis is at the moment our ‘local’ city, so we are able to visit pretty frequently. Over the next few months, we plan on experiencing a variety of local establishments around Memphis to try and justify whether Huey’s Restaurant was rightly voted as having the best burger.  Do we really need an excuse to get out and experience different food in Memphis? Not at all, it really is an amazing city if you love trying unique, local cuisine.

Location

Huey’s has eight different locations scattered throughout the city of Memphis (technically seven as there is one in Southaven, MS just south of Memphis). Whether you want to experience the lively atmosphere in downtown Memphis close to Beale Street, or perhaps the more relaxed environment in Midtown or Germantown, there are plenty of options available.

Here are the various locations throughout the city along with a map depicting the locations:

Huey’s Restaurant – The Atmosphere

If you are visiting Memphis to experience a little retail therapy, Huey’s Restaurant Germantown is located perfectly across from one of the ritzy malls around the city – Saddle Creek. A short drive from Wolfchase Galleria along Germantown Parkway also offers another convenient option if you are interested in a Memphis shopping experience but this restaurant is a great option to enjoy lunch or dinner.

Huey’s has been serving up Blues, Brews and Burgers since 1970.

The Germantown location is representative of all the other locations, with an outdoor patio or indoor dining option. If you simply want to experience a couple of beers while watching the latest sporting event, you can sit at the bar while enjoying the lively atmosphere. Huey’s has a real tavern like feel to it as you enter and admire the architecture and choice of decor.

hueys restaurant memphis

The cozy atmosphere is typified by the closeness of tables and booths so if you are looking for an intimate restaurant, perhaps Huey’s is not the best choice. However, I think the close proximity of tables and booths works well here because the restaurant thrives on the community feel and desire to create an environment that all the family can enjoy.

huey's restaurant atmosphere

The light-hearted atmosphere can be seen if you peer towards the ceiling and notice all the toothpicks staring back down at you. Take a moment to grab your straw and pop a toothpick above you…everyone else does!

We have yet to experience the local music scene at Huey’s but Sunday’s are renowned for live music, with jazz in the afternoon and a mixture of blues and rock n’ roll at night. There is a real focus on promoting local Memphis artists, so for any aspiring artists, perhaps a performance at Huey’s will be your step into the music world.

Huey’s World Famous Burgers

Where do you even begin to choose a dish from the delicious selection of burgers and accompanying options? It’s entirely personal preference but of course, the popular choice has to be the World Famous Huey Burger. A 1/3 pound beef patty on top of a buttered, toasted sesame seed bun along with all the toppings you would associate with an amazing burger.

huey's restaurant menu

But just perusing over the menu will make you realize that a plain burger is not the only option here. Whether you want to explore a little Mexican flair with a Señor Huey, topped with spicy jalapenos or perhaps the Old Tyme A1 burger with sauteed mushrooms, onion straws and of course, A1 steak sauce, there are plenty of alternatives at Huey’s.

It’s not all about burgers though at Huey’s, in fact, there are ample alternatives available to suit everyone’s tastes. Sandwiches, seafood, soups, and salads are all available so be sure to take your time browsing the menu before making your final choice. Also, be sure to check the additional menu on the table containing the seasonal specialties on offer.

Our Experience

I opted for the Sunshine Burger which is served open face with cheddar cheese, topped with a fried egg and crispy bacon. Grilled mushrooms are an accompanying topping though I chose to leave these off. The egg was a little overcooked for my liking but the burger was delicious and definitely met my high expectations given the positive media coverage Huey’s has received.

sunshine burger huey's restaurant

One thing you will notice when you order any of the burgers is that sides are not included. With the size of the burger, it’s likely that you won’t need any fries or onion rings so be cautious when considering ordering anything in addition to your burger.

Heather decided to go with the Little Minors Trio, a selection of three different sliders that basically are a great way to sample the variety of burgers and toppings at Huey’s. This is served with onion straws though Heather substituted these for steak fries.

huey's restaurant memphis

Summary

Huey’s Restaurant really does offer an amazing selection of burgers. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and dining experience but it’s the quality of food that really sets apart Huey’s from its competitors in Memphis. The city of Memphis has a plethora of dining options, all of which offer awesome cuisine but if you are looking to experience the “Best Burger in Town”, Huey’s is right at the very top of the list.

If you are planning on visiting Memphis anytime soon, we strongly encourage you to head over to one of Huey’s locations and sample one of these burgers for yourselves.

What are your experiences at Huey’s?

Iolani Palace Tour – Why You Need to Embrace This Royal Residence?

3

When you think about locations around the world that are home to royal residences, I am sure that the majority of you will think about England or possibly other European nations. How many of you considered Hawaii as a possible location? It’s true, Honolulu on the island of Oahu is home to the United States’ only royal residence by the name of Iolani Palace. If you are heading to Oahu, be sure to take the Iolani Palace tour to not only gain a greater appreciation of the royal heritage on Hawaii but also learn about the rich and somewhat tragic history of this residence.

iolani palace tour

Our advice is to arrive well in advance of your tour time to find adequate parking. The metered parking takes quarters or credit card which is a handy alternative and unusual for this type of parking. If there are no spaces available, there is pretty convenient private parking garage at Alii Place (1099 Alakea Street) that costs $3 for the first two hours.

History of Iolani Palace

Iolani Palace is the official residence of Hawaii’s royal monarchy. Of course, this monarchy ceased to exist towards the end of the 19th Century but today, Iolani Palace stands as a reminder to everyone visiting the rich history and heritage that Hawaii’s royal family provided to these islands.

iolani palace

The royal residence for the Kingdom of Hawaii started under the rule of Kamehameha III in 1845 and ended with Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893 under the Kalākaua Dynasty. The tragic end of Liliʻuokalani’s tenure at the head of the monarchy is shared with visitors and provides a poignant memory of what could have been for the Hawaiian royal family.

iolani palace

It’s interesting to note without going into too much detail that the majority of Hawaiian’s were in favor of keeping the monarchy. However, Liliʻuokalani was overthrown by the Committee of Safety in 1893 and imprisoned inside a smaller room on the second level of Iolani Palace (you are taken through this on the tour).

Guided Tour of Iolani Palace

I want to start by thanking our AMAZING tour guide who was everything you could ask for when visiting an attraction like Iolani Palace! Her knowledge was unbelievable and she was always willing to stop and take questions throughout our guided tour.

iolani palace tour

The tour started on the first level as we explored the reception rooms after experiencing the grand hallway where portraits of ten Hawaiian Kings and Queens were the highlighted features of this entrance. The beautiful, ornate staircase is certainly the focal point of this hallway.

iolani palace grand hallway

The Blue Room was our next stop as our guide started to delve deeper into the history of the Hawaiian monarchy, particularly focusing on the portraits of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani.

blue room iolani palace

The restoration and preservation of Iolani Palace is an impressive sight throughout all of the rooms and much of what you see is either the original furniture or a direct replica of what would have been used during the 19th Century.

iolani palace tour

It’s interesting to note that original objects and furnishings have been recovered from around the world, yet there are still many pieces that Iolani Palace experts are trying to find at auctions and other sources.

iolani palace tour

The State Dining Room is another incredible sight with portraits again providing iconic representations of global leaders while the intricate details of the banquet table is a reflection on how the Hawaiian royal family lived in majestic grandeur.

iolani palace tour

Our final stop on the first floor was the Throne Room which is the epitome of resplendent beauty.

iolani palace tour

The stereotypical crimson and gold colors are scattered throughout the room with a number of thrones providing the focal point of this impressive ballroom.

Iolani’s Living Quarters

I think it’s fair to say the end of the Hawaiian monarchy was a pretty tragic event. Regardless of your opinion on royal heritage and the purpose it serves to people across a nation, it’s inevitable that having such a family at the head of a country (or state in this case) can be beneficial.

queen Liliʻuokalani

As we headed upstairs to the second floor, we learned about Liliʻuokalani being overthrown and how she was forced to stay in captivity inside what is now referred to as the “Imprisonment Room.”

iolani palace second floor

It was quite surreal to stand inside this relatively bare room and hear stories about how this young woman had very little contact with the outside world for eight months as she faced her house arrest.

iolani palace tour

A gorgeous tapestry is the focal point inside this room and heard how Liliʻuokalani spent her time creating this masterpiece.

iolani palace living quarters

Our tour guide lead us through the remaining living quarters with the King’s and Queen’s suites and a gorgeous Music Room where the royal family would enjoy gathering and either playing instruments or listening to their favorite artists.

iolani palace tour

I want to reiterate that every inch of Iolani Palace is immaculately maintained and it’s a true honor to be able to walk around what was once the home of a royal family.

iolani palace tour

The final story we heard before heading to the basement was one that left a lasting impression on our visit. One of the truly remarkable feats of Liliʻuokalani was her desire to take care of Hawaiian children.

This philosophy has continued to this day with the Queen Lili’uokalani Trust which is focused on ensuring the “wellbeing of orphan and destitute Native Hawaiian children.”

iolani palace tour

Basement Exhibits

After an amazing guided tour of Iolani Palace, our guide lead us to the basement and said her farewell to us as we were able to experience the myriad of exhibits and the restored kitchen by ourselves.

iolani palace basement kitchen

A really beneficial picture in the basement is the family tree of the Hawaiian monarchies which certainly helps you put into perspective how all the families are related.

kalakaua dynasty family tree

There are a number of treasured items from the royal collection in the basement including the iconic diamond butterfly brooch Lili’uokalani bought during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee that she attended.

iolani palace tour

As you walk through the basement, there is a large number of historic photographs available for your perusal and if you have enjoyed your Iolani Palace tour, you will likely be intrigued to learn more about the monarchies that reigned throughout the 19th Century.

Summary

Iolani Palace is not only an iconic location on the island of Oahu because of the incredible architectural design and how it has been preserved but also because of the rich royal heritage that is associated with it.

iolani palace tour

Having spent time taking a guided Iolani Palace tour, we can well and truly attest that this is a valuable attraction worth visiting on your next trip to Honolulu. If you are a seasoned traveler around the United States, you will know that there are no other royal residences to experience so this is definitely a unique location across the nation.

Whether you feel touched by the tragic events of the monarchy being overthrown in 1893 or simply want to enjoy the grandeur throughout this royal residence, every visitor to Iolani Palace can appreciate the beauty and history within these walls.

Amazing Panoramic Views of Auckland

Auckland is a beautiful city and it’s certainly true that you can gain a great appreciation when you admire a birds eye view from the top of the Sky Tower.

After taking the short ride in the elevator, we first experienced the main observation level which stands at 186 meters (610 feet).

sky tower in auckland

As you walk around the observation deck, you are treated to unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views of Auckland and it really is a cool sight.

sky tower in auckland

I particularly enjoyed the views across the bay area and checking out all of the smaller islands that surround Auckland. Places like Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island are visible from the summit of the tower and will perhaps inspire you to take a trip over to explore these before heading away from Auckland.

Visitors then have the option to take another elevator to the highest observation deck viewing platform at 220 meters (721 feet) or take a short staircase down to the Sky Café.

We opted for the former first and needless to say, the views from higher are even more spectacular.

Adventure Junkies Paradise

Ready for the thrill of a lifetime? You can take the traditional route via the elevator as we did or perhaps you would prefer to take the “leap” and hurl yourself off New Zealand’s tallest structure.

The SkyJump is certainly not for the faint-hearted but if you love the rush of adrenaline, perhaps the thought of plummeting 192 meters at 85 km/h will inspire you to book this action-packed experience. For a mere 11 seconds, you can enjoy the BEST views of Auckland as you fly like a bird at high speed until you slow down and arrive at a safe landing in SkyCity Plaza.

We had the opportunity to partake in the live drawing for the WTA Auckland ASB Classic tennis tournament that took place in the SkyCity Plaza and Croatia’s Ana Konjuh was present after spending her morning leaping off the Sky Tower. If a professional tennis player can do this without any worries, so can you.

Are you looking for something a little less stressful? There is always the SkyWalk which may sound a little less exhilarating but is equally nerve-wracking for those that are willing to step outside at 700 feet above ground and inch their way around the circumference of the Sky Tower…without a handrail of course!

We enjoyed the safe sanctuary of the observation deck and certainly gave kudos to those that we watched take this leap of faith. It’s not for everyone but I am sure you will feel a huge sense of accomplishment if you do either the SkyJump or SkyWalk. Maybe next time we are in New Zealand!

Sky Café

After feeling your heartbeat rise a notch or two after these crazy folks hop off the side of the Sky Tower, it’s time to head back down to the Sky Lounge and Café and enjoy some delicious cuisine.

sky cafe auckland

If you have a sweet tooth, this is definitely the place for you because, in partnership with Kapiti, Sky Café offers some of the most delicious local ice cream that we have ever tasted.

A variety of ice cream options, local cheeses, beverages and other snacks are readily available and the friendly staff will do everything they can to meet your needs.

We strongly recommend sampling one of the cheeseboards but please be sure to save enough space for some ice cream.

The iconic Kapiti “Cold Rock” is beyond amazing! Please don’t think about calories when you are visiting the Sky Café and just be prepared to indulge yourselves in this delicacy.

With a large variety to choose from, it’s a painstakingly difficult decision trying to figure out what you want but after making this choice, it’s worth the wait.

Summary

Having spent an enjoyable couple of hours experiencing the Sky Tower in Auckland, we really think that this is an attraction that should be high on your priority list if you plan on exploring the Central Business District. Perhaps because I am fond architecture lover and feel a need to visit the highest structures everywhere we go was one reason for us visiting the Sky Tower in Auckland but regardless of your feelings towards architecture, the SkyCity experience is one that all the family can enjoy.

New Zealand is an amazing country with a lot to see and experience and the Sky Tower might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think about things to do on the North Island. However, with such breathtaking panoramic views and an opportunity to sample delicious local ice cream, I think anyone visiting this structure will create memories they will cherish forever.

Disclaimer – We received two complimentary tickets to visit the Sky Tower in Auckland along with vouchers for two Cold Rock ice creams for consideration of a blog post. The views contained within this post are entirely our personal opinion/experience and we received no final compensation for this.

Best Travel Sim Card – How to Easily Share Your Amazing Travels?

Let’s face it, we all need to stay connected 24/7 wherever we are in the world! Whether you consider this to be a sad state of affairs or simply know nothing different, having the ability to update your Facebook status, share your latest tweet or snap a quick video is a critical component of today’s society. When you travel on vacation, your mentality is no different. However, there is frequently a problem – how do you stay connected without experiencing exorbitant roaming charges? We have the perfect solution with the best travel sim card on the market. Welcome to KnowRoaming!

best travel sim card

If you read our review on KnowRoaming, you will know that we utilized this awesome service during our recent round the world adventure that saw us visit five different countries over a three week period. We want to share some of our amazing adventures and how KnowRoaming was the perfect solution to ensure all our readers kept updated with our journey around the world.

Best Travel Sim Card

So why do we think KnowRoaming is the best travel sim card on the market? I could write another post solely on this but I think it comes down to the following three components.

  • Affordability – For only $7.99 per day, you can remain connected with fast data speeds! It may seem like a substantial amount if you use this every day but the beauty of KnowRoaming is that you can select which days you want to use data packages.
  • Efficiency – Easy to use out of the box regardless of whether you are using the sim card or sticker option. The KnowRoaming app is user-friendly and customer service support is readily available.
  • Availability – KnowRoaming may not be available everywhere but it’s pretty close! On our recent trip, the UAE was the only country we couldn’t use this service but I’m convinced KnowRoaming will be continuing to expand its service around the globe.

Rather than elaborating too much on KnowRoaming’s service (you can read all about our review of the KnowRoaming product here), we want to share some of the highlights that we experienced and examples of how we shared them during our time on the road.

As I mentioned, our journey started in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE but using KnowRoaming started the moment we landed at Changi International Airport in Singapore.

The majority of the images throughout this post are taken directly from our social media accounts where we shared them on our adventures around the world to emphasize the benefits of KnowRoaming while you are on the road.

KnowRoaming in Singapore

Our first visit to Singapore may have been short but it was certainly memorable. This is a beautiful city and although there is a very westernized feel to it, there is just enough local culture to make you appreciate the beauty throughout.

If you are considering a trip to Singapore, there are certain things you just have to experience. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel may be the most iconic of all hotels in Singapore primarily because of the architectural brilliance but we opted to stay at the Westin Singapore Hotel and were not disappointed.

westin singapore hotel

We were well and truly treated like royalty and having the opportunity to share some of the amazing images of the breakfast buffet, the gorgeous lobby, and the infinity pool was certainly something that we enjoyed.

In terms of attractions, a trip to Sentosa Island is well worth your time. We took a trip to the summit of the Tiger Sky Tower which offers amazing views of the Singapore skyline and the South China Sea but if you have more time here, you may enjoy experiencing the main attractions of the Sentosa theme park.

Taking a Gardens by the Bay tour is well worth experiencing and this is way more than just your stereotypical botanical gardens. We had a great time exploring the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome but it’s perhaps those iconic “Supertrees” that make the visit truly memorable.

best travel sim card

Using KnowRoaming was seamless and effective throughout our time in Singapore. We immediately connected to the local network and had 3G coverage everywhere we visited. Sharing local encounters at the Lau Pa Sat Festival Pavilion along with the Gardens by the Bay was certainly a great way to portray our experiences in Singapore.

I have to admit that we were excited but also a little skeptical about using KnowRoaming in Singapore. It was our first experience and we really thought there may be some major cons such as losing connectivity, poor roaming speeds etc. but all our fears soon disappeared once we realized how we could utilize this service to keep everyone updated on our travels.

We even had the opportunity to share a picture while waiting at the airport to board our “first-class” trip to Melbourne via Jetstar Airways!

KnowRoaming in Australia

Welcome to the Land of Oz! Having spent an amazing couple of weeks in Brisbane and the Gold Coast for our honeymoon in 2011, we were excited to head back to Australia and spend a week in Melbourne.

knowroaming in australia

Dubbed as the “world’s most livable city,” we were ready to see if there was any truth behind this. It didn’t take us long to realize this was so very true! 48 hours in the Melbourne CBD and you will know that this is one epic city.

shrine of remembrance melbourne

We really enjoyed the benefits of KnowRoaming on Christmas Day given that the majority of places were closed so trying to find free wi-fi was limited. For those of you that have never experienced Christmas in Australia, it’s completely different to the stereotypical White Christmas.

royal exhibition building melbourne

Relaxing in Carlton Gardens and admiring the impressive architectural design of the Royal Exhibition Building was the perfect tonic to start our Christmas morning before visiting the iconic landmarks of Flinders Street Station and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Boxing Day in Australia…it can only mean one thing, at least if you are an Aussie! The Boxing Day Test is an annual cricket match where the Australian national team hosts an overseas nation.

We were fortunate to attend this match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and enjoyed conducting our very first Facebook Live video to share some of the highlights with our followers. Thanks to KnowRoaming’s awesome service for providing excellent coverage in Melbourne and allowing us to do this!

great ocean road melbourne

A day trip along the Great Ocean Road offered breathtaking panoramic landscapes of the untouched, rugged Victoria coastline. It’s no surprise to hear that this road trip is one of the most popular in Australia and after culminating at the infamous “12 Apostles”, we could certainly understand why this is so iconic.

If you are ready to experience Melbourne from a birds eye perspective or perhaps you have a fear of heights that you are ready to overcome, there is no better place than the Eureka Tower Skydeck. “The Edge Experience” is awesome and definitely ranks among the most exhilarating experiences throughout Melbourne.

KnowRoaming in New Zealand

Before planning our trip, we were particularly excited about visiting New Zealand.

knowroaming best travel sim card

It’s been towards the top of our bucket list for quite some time, so the moment we landed in Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island, we were raring to get out and explore.

sky tower auckland

We spent the first day downtown Auckland visiting the Sky Tower and War Memorial Museum among other things but our journey exploring what we consider to be the ‘real’ parts of New Zealand started after we hopped in our rental car and drove north in search of the Bay Islands.

auckland war memorial museum

The stretch of coastline from Auckland to the northernmost point of the North Island is spectacular and with natural attractions such as Whangarei Falls, there is plenty to keep you occupied as you head north.

Rotorua is a must-see location on the North Island, particularly if you are intrigued by geothermal activity.

waiotapu geothermal wonderland

We spent an afternoon walking around Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland which offers a stunning active example of geothermal activity in New Zealand. Be prepared for some pretty strong sulphuric smells but the landscapes are incredible. Our favorite was the final point on the trail – Lake Ngakoro!

One of the highlight attractions in the North Island is Hobbiton, the location where The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies were filmed.

We had a great time experiencing “Middle Earth” on our guided tour of the film set and it’s true that Sir Peter Jackson found an absolute gem when he stumbled across the Alexander family farm in the heart of New Zealand.

Our final day in New Zealand saw us head to Lake Taupo and experience the AMAZING Huka Falls. I can’t reiterate enough how amazing Huka Falls really was and we loved having the opportunity to share live video and pictures of this waterfall.

KnowRoaming in Hawaii

The journey home started after we left Auckland but not before we had the opportunity to visit our 50th and final US state! Even though we were back on US soil when we arrived in Honolulu on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, we completely forgot that we could use our own data plan from our cell phone provider. We had the opportunity to use KnowRoaming in the States and again we had zero issues.

Our first top was Iolani Palace, the former residence of the Hawaiian royal family. This is the only royal residence in the United States and the interior of the palace was certainly the epitome of grandeur. A hike to the top of Diamond Head State Monument was a rewarding experience especially with amazing views across Oahu and the Pacific Ocean from the summit.

Perhaps the most touching and rewarding experience was saved until last when we visited Pearl Harbor.

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial was poignant but a memorable experience that will long live with us. It’s just one of those attractions that everyone has to see at least once in their lifetime.

A trip to Hawaii wouldn’t be the same without spending some time relaxing on Waikiki Beach and I think it’s fair to say sharing the below image made a lot of our followers pretty jealous, especially those struggling to stay warm in the frigid Winter weather!

Top Things to Do in Docklands, Melbourne in One Crazy Day

After spending 48 hours in the heart of the Melbourne CBD exploring all of the historic and iconic attractions that we all associate with this beautiful city, we decided to spend a day in the recently regenerated Docklands neighborhood which is just a short tram ride from downtown Melbourne. Whether you are looking to entertain a little retail therapy or perhaps enjoy a romantic ride on a giant observation wheel, there are plenty of things to do in Docklands, Melbourne.

The Docklands suburb can easily be explored on foot but it is also conveniently accessed via Melbourne’s efficient public transportation network. We want to share a few of the best places worth experiencing along with a couple of recommended places to eat based on our experiences here.

docklands melbourne

Where is Docklands, Melbourne?

Located just over a mile west of Melbourne’s Central Business District, the Docklands can be easily reached by hopping on the free circular tram ride that will conveniently take you to a number of stops in this part of the city. There are a number of iconic attractions here that are worth exploring, all of which you can see in less than 24 hours.

docklands melbourne

Melbourne’s spectacular harbor can be accessed from the Docklands area while a stroll along the Yarra River from the downtown area will take you to the edge of this neighborhood.

The History of Docklands

If you have an appreciation of contemporary architecture, the Docklands area is certainly the epitome of urban renewal through the development of a number of trendy looking buildings and apartment complexes. However, the Docklands suburb hasn’t always been like this and it’s interesting to note the history behind this part of Melbourne.

docklands melbourne history

Prior to the 20th century, much of the Docklands was swamp land and only in the 1880s were plans made to redevelop this area. A major engineering project began in the 1880s by a British engineer to reroute the course of the Yarra River and with this, the construction of a new Victoria dock was ultimately the start of the Docklands suburb. A number of wharfs and other interconnected industries started to prosper here in the early 20th century.

By the middle of the 20th century, however, the Docklands area was becoming less prevalent. Modern container ships were opting for alternative docks in Melbourne, particularly those that were close to the mouth of the Yarra River, leaving the Docklands relatively unused. It was only in the 1980s and 1990s that a task force was developed to create a new infrastructure strategy to regenerate the struggling suburb.

Today, the Docklands area is a much sought after location in Melbourne for businesses looking to establish their headquarters here. Corporate Australian names such as ANZ, National Australia Bank, and Medibank Private are all headquartered in the Docklands neighborhood while global brands such as Ericsson can also be found here.

Things to do in Docklands, Melbourne

The Docklands suburb of Melbourne is a fun-filled destination if you are looking to explore outside of the downtown area. Let’s take a look at some of the best attractions worth experiencing during your 24 hours in this part of the city. Our highlight was undoubtedly the Melbourne Star but don’t worry, if gliding around a Ferris wheel isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other things to do in Docklands.

things to do in docklands melbourne

From arts to culture to sporting events, the Docklands is an area of Melbourne that should be on your radar.

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel

Before heading to the Docklands area, I heard about the Melbourne Star and honestly just thought it was going to be another Ferris wheel like anywhere else in the world.

melbourne star observation wheel

What I didn’t realize was just how awesome the experience was going to be once we boarded our private cabin and started the 30-minute journey around the wheel.

melbourne star observation wheel

21 spacious air-conditioned cabins are strategically positioned around the wheel and if you are fortunate to visit during a quiet time, the friendly Melbourne Star staff will give you a private cabin to enhance your experience.

melbourne star observation wheel

Day or night, you’ll feel on top of the world as the Melbourne Star glides on its gentle arc through the sky.

Once the doors are closed, you are immediately engulfed in the breathtaking panoramic views of Melbourne. The reality is that the higher you get, the more spectacular the views…at least that was our impression.

melbourne star observation wheel

A guided commentary highlights some of the iconic landmarks around Melbourne’s CBD and surrounding area, while you are also handed a map prior to boarding so you can pinpoint specific spots that you are eager to see from almost 400 feet in the sky.

melbourne star observation wheel

Let’s take a moment to clarify the correct terminology for this attraction The Melbourne Star is technically NOT a Ferris wheel, rather it is a ‘Giant Observation Wheel’ and is one of only four existing around the world. The key differences between the two are related to size and the overall technical engineering of the structure.

melbourne star observation wheel

Whereas a Ferris wheel may be renowned as a “rickety” structure, the Melbourne Star is a stereotypical example of a Giant Observation Wheel soundly constructed with modern design and engineering components.

melbourne star wheel

The Sights and Lights package is definitely the best value ticket you can purchase. This ticket allows not one but two journeys around the Melbourne Star. The beauty of this ticket is that you can experience the amazing Melbourne skyline during the day and then appreciate the “glittering kaleidoscope of color” at night.

things to do in docklands

The Melbourne Star houses a spectacular LED display and transforms the wheel into a hub of color in the heart of the Docklands suburb.

Alternatively, if you experience your first ride in overcast or rainy conditions, you always have a second opportunity to return within 12 months of the first ride. This is exactly what we did and certainly appreciated the amazing weather on our second trip which helps capture some amazing shots of Melbourne.

things to do in docklands

Be sure to check out the Melbourne Star website for all the latest admission prices and packages that may be available during your visit.

Harbour Town Shopping Outlets

If you have never visited Australia and are planning an upcoming trip, it’s likely that you will be warned about how expensive this country is. This is true to an extent but for those of you that still cannot resist enjoying some retail therapy, the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets is the perfect place to visit and find some great prices on designer brands.

things to do in docklands melbourne

The open-air design of Harbour Town means that you can enjoy the gorgeous Melbourne weather while taking some time to hop in and out of your favorite stores. Not only can you find some great clothing options, there are plenty of souvenir shops at affordable prices to find that perfect gift for friends and family back home.

harbour town shopping outlets

The beauty of Harbour Town is that it’s more than just a shopping experience. Conveniently accessible via the free circular tram network, visitors can also enjoy a selection of fine dining establishments and also an entertainment hub including mini golf and a variety of activities for the kids.

things to do in docklands

Webb Bridge

I mentioned earlier that the Docklands was a hub for trendy architecture. The ultimate example of architectural brilliance has to be the iconic Webb Bridge that crosses the Yarra River. Quirky, unorthodox, brilliant and eye-catching are all words that I would use to describe the appearance of the Webb Bridge.

webb bridge melbourne

A competition-winning design for a new pedestrian/cycle bridge, Webb Bridge was designed by Denton Corker Marshall in collaboration with artist Robert Owen. The distinctive appearance of this bridge is what makes this stand out from other bridges along the river.

things to do in docklands

As an object, it appears as a delineated structure, a sensuous volume, light and linear.  Space is seen as atmospheric, dynamic and transitional.

However, it’s perhaps the location in the Docklands suburb that helps transform this structure into an integral part of Melbourne’s modernistic approach to regeneration.

webb bridge docklands melbourne

Etihad Stadium

The impressive Etihad Stadium is the focal point of this suburb with the likes of the Melbourne Renegades (20/20 Big Bash League cricket team), Melbourne Victory (Australian soccer team) and five local AFL teams calling this their home stadium. Combine this with a number of concerts that have taken place here with world-famous artists such as George Michael, Bon Jovi, and Coldplay all performing here.

etihad stadium melbourne

If you are not fortunate enough to see a live event inside the Etihad Stadium, perhaps a “behind the scenes” tour of the stadium will be an intriguing prospect. For only $15 (adults), visitors can take a tour of the changing rooms, media center, coaches box and even walk out of the tunnel at this impressive arena.

Where to Eat in Docklands?

After exploring the Docklands, it’s likely you will want to find a place to grab a bite to eat. Don’t worry, there are plenty of awesome choices just like everywhere else in Melbourne.

where to eat in docklands melbourne

We enjoyed a delicious late lunch at The Fish Dept in the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets and we can both attest to this being one of our favorite meals throughout our time in Melbourne.

the fish dept melbourne

Burger Monster offers a specialized array of home-made burgers and given that these are freshly made to your order, you can be sure you are getting one of the finest burgers in Melbourne. If you are looking for a little more international cuisine, why not sample Gold Leaf Chinese Restaurant for a more upscale experience or perhaps Old Man Pho for a plethora of delicious Asian & Vietnamese dishes.

Looking for something with a waterfront view? Why not take a short walk from Harbour Town and experience Renzo’s Bar Cafe Italiano and enjoy amazing views across the water from the terrace.

Regardless of your preference, you can be sure that the Docklands will have something to entice your taste buds. In our opinion, you can’t beat a good old traditional Aussie Fish and Chips so be sure to sample this before you leave Melbourne!

Summary

If you are looking for a plethora of things to do in Docklands, Melbourne, you certainly won’t be disappointed. We are sharing our 24-hour guide to this Melbourne suburb but the reality is that you could visit here multiple times during your stay in the city, given that it is only a short tram ride over from the central business district.

We were understandably impressed by the Melbourne Star and I think it’s fair to say that Heather was impressed by the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets (ok, I was too!). The history of the Docklands suburb is intriguing and it’s amazing to see how an area has been regenerated so quickly and successfully. Our final tip…do not forget the Fish and Chips, you won’t be disappointed!
