Melbourne is home to a myriad of awesome attractions, fine dining establishments and an array of cultural experiences that will make you realize why this is classified as the world’s most livable city. If you are visiting Melbourne for the first time, we urge you to consider taking a step back (or a “step up”) for a moment and admire an epic birds-eye view of the city. There is no better spot to accomplish this than the Eureka Tower Skydeck!

Incredible views, a delicious dining venue and an opportunity to overcome a lifelong fear for those that suffer from acrophobia. The Eureka Tower is the second tallest building in Australia after the Q1 tower on the Gold Coast, so be prepared for some pretty epic scenery once you reach the summit. But don’t worry, the views are not the only pull factor that makes the Skydeck such an attractive tourist spot in Melbourne…wait until you hear about “The Edge!”

Whether you are inspired to appreciate the beauty of Melbourne’s sprawling CBD or perhaps enjoy the distant Dandenong mountain range, the unequivocally breathtaking panoramic scenes from the summit of the Skydeck are unlike anywhere else.

Why Visit the Eureka Tower Skydeck?

So why do we think the Skydeck is the best place to start your adventure in Melbourne? Well, as we have already established, the city is full of things to do and unless you are well prepared, it can be a daunting task trying to figure out where to go, what to see and how to get from one place to the next.

If you visit the Eureka Tower Skydeck (officially known as Eureka Skydeck 88), you can spend some time planning an itinerary and getting a conceptual grasp as to the proximity of one attraction to another. Before visiting the Eureka Tower Skydeck, I hopped on their website and after reading a little about their history I stumbled across the above quote which I think epitomizes the focal point of the Melbourne skyline.

Not only is it a stunning observation deck, it’s a well-recognized symbolic attraction that everyone visiting Melbourne should be aware of. Did you also know it’s home to Australia’s highest postbox? If you are not familiar with the Eureka Tower before heading to Melbourne, you sure will be after you leave!

Journey to the Top of Melbourne

After effortlessly passing through security, our journey to the top of Melbourne started as we entered the elevator for a short trip to the observation deck. The moment the doors opened and we were greeted at the summit, our eyes were immediately focused on the breathtaking views.

360-degree panoramic views are just the start of your experience once you arrive at the top.

We probably walked around the observation deck two or three times before focusing our attention on certain parts of Melbourne and trying to pinpoint some of the infamous attractions that we couldn’t wait to explore during the rest of our time in the city.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne Tennis Centre, Royal Botanic Gardens and AAMI Park were all venues and attractions that we focused on to the east/southeast of the Skydeck.

Meanwhile, the winding Yarra River is another intriguing prospect as your eyes are drawn to the meandering flow while at the same time capturing some other iconic attractions along the path of the river.

The Docklands area of Melbourne is another aesthetically appealing neighborhood and looks even more beautiful from almost 1,000 feet. You don’t appreciate how spectacular the makeup of a city really is until you are stood 88 floors up peering over the complexities of urban sprawl.

The sight of the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel and the impressive Etihad Stadium are just a couple of examples of how the Docklands area has thrived since the regeneration of this district in recent years.

Take a step outside on the outdoor terrace to enjoy gorgeous views, this time without the constraints of the glass windows that frequently hinder taking quality pictures.

The terrace also gives you an opportunity to catch a glance at The Edge as you mentally prepare yourselves if you are planning on experiencing this later in your visit.

The Edge Experience

If you love the rush of adrenaline or perhaps you have a burning desire to overcome your fear of heights, The Edge is an experience you cannot afford to miss while at the top of the Eureka Tower.

Unlike anywhere else in the world, The Edge is a glass cube that extends out from the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower and allows visitors the opportunity to be suspended 300 meters above the ground with only glass walls, ceiling, and FLOOR around them.

We have experienced several other observation decks around the world that offer something similar but this is a completely different experience given that you start out by walking into the cube and all the windows are clouded over.

You also start out with the cube being inside the building and the adventure begins once the cube literally goes “over the edge” and protrudes about 3 meters.

Feel the rush inside one of Melbourne’s most unforgettable tourist attractions

Once the glass cube reaches full extension, the clouded windows quickly turn clear and you have the opportunity to admire the amazing panoramic views surrounding you. There certainly is a “rush” as the Eureka Tower Skydeck advertise the moment the windows become clear.

No cameras or cell phones are allowed on The Edge but it’s the memories that will long live with you after this epic experience. The Eureka Tower Skydeck staff will take a couple of pictures for you and an opportunity to purchase these later will be available.

Summary

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Eureka Tower Skydeck and would go back in a heartbeat the next time we are in Melbourne. You have probably realized by now that I am a bit of an aspiring skyscraper cognoscente and love this contemporary style of architecture in cities around the world.

Although the Eureka Tower may not compete in terms of height with the likes of Burj Khalifa and the One World Trade Center, it certainly competes in terms of breathtaking views once you reach the summit. We both agreed that our time at the summit wasn’t enough and time can quickly get away from you as you admire the beauty throughout Melbourne.

If you have any plans on visiting Melbourne in the near future, take our advice and head to the Eureka Tower Skydeck before exploring anywhere else. Don’t forget to live on “The Edge” while you are in Melbourne!

Visiting the world’s most livable city, it’s inevitable that you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation options. We want to make this choice much easier for you if you are planning a trip to Melbourne. We strongly recommend considering the Pullman Melbourne on the Park and hopefully, after reading this post, you will understand exactly why we are so passionate about this amazing hotel in the heart of the Melbourne CBD.

Why are we so confident that the Pullman Melbourne on the Park is the ultimate choice? Whether you consider location, price, amenities or overall comfort to be the key selling point in a hotel, we believe the Pullman brand have created a perfect combination of all these with their location near the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens.

When you have the opportunity to stay at a variety of hotels around the world, it’s understandable that you will be super critical about every hotel experience you have. This was no different as we entered the lobby area at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park after taking a short stroll from the free tram stop by Fitzroy Gardens.

Before arriving at the hotel, I noticed on the hotel’s website the following statement:

It’s fair to say that we couldn’t have put this any better ourselves. The blend of contemporary and traditional decor is apparent as you enter the lobby area but it perfectly creates that sense of relaxation that the Pullman brand is focused on.

Before looking at the interior of this hotel, we want to focus on an attribute that makes this hotel a perfect option – the location!

Location

We have all heard real estate agents coin the phrase “Location, Location, Location” and I personally think this is applicable to hotels when determining where you should stay in a city. We all want to be centrally located within easy access of iconic attractions, restaurants, and public transportation. At the same time, it needs to be an affordable option!

The Pullman Melbourne on the Park hotel is located in the heart of East Melbourne, just a few minutes away from the heart of downtown. Don’t worry, a short walk will lead you to a tram stop where you can hop on the free Melbourne route that will take you everywhere you need during your stay in the city.

If you are planning on attending the Australian Open tennis tournament or perhaps the Boxing Day test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, there is no other affordable hotel more conveniently located to either of these spots than the Pullman Melbourne on the Park.

As you walk into a Pullman hotel, you may not immediately realize it but the brand has constructed an environment ideal for the present day traveler. Ok, so we have established that the Pullman Melbourne on the Park is in a great location! But we all know that in order for a hotel to attract visitors from around the world, the amenities need to be at the highest level…this hotel doesn’t disappoint. Whether you are looking to relax in the gorgeous lobby or perhaps enjoy your favorite beverage at the bar, this hotel offers plenty of amenities for guests.

Relax in the Lobby and Enjoy the 2017 Renovation

It may sound crazy but one of our favorite aspects of the Pullman Melbourne on the Park was the lobby. Relaxing in a lobby may not sound the most appealing but when you can look around and admire the intricate details of the architecture yet still feel at home, this is certainly a spot we enjoy.

The crystal chandelier is the focal point of the lobby and “stunning” doesn’t begin to describe how spectacular this looks and provides the perfect decor for this environment.

But that’s not all…if you are intrigued enough to plan a visit to Melbourne and stay here, 2017 is going to be a landmark year for the hotel! Plans are in place for a complete renovation of the lobby, bar and restaurant area (more on the restaurant later).

I will be sad to see the current lobby go but after seeing the conceptual images of the new redesign, I have to admit it’s going to be AMAZING! Completion of this project is expected by mid-2017 but regardless of this, we cannot wait to head back to see how the new design looks.

Dubbed as a project that will be “a reinvention of one of the most iconic hotels in Melbourne”, it’s always exciting to hear how a renovation can help take a hotel to the next level.

Ensuring that you remain ahead of your competition is critical in such a saturated market and I am convinced that the Pullman Melbourne on the Park will continue to hold a competitive advantage once this renovation is complete.

Stay in Shape

Enjoying fine cuisine, sampling your favorite beverages and relaxing in your room are all great reasons to stay at a hotel. But what about those times that you feel a little guilty after indulging in your favorite meal or perhaps you just want to get into a routine of hitting the gym every morning?

The fitness facilities and swimming pool at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park are a great way to burn a few calories. Spending time here can actually be enjoyable when you have such high-tech equipment available. Whether you prefer to lift weights or just hit the treadmill, the gym is equipped with everything you will need.

Head outside to swim a few laps before relaxing in the morning sun on the loungers. When you are ready to wind down after a strenuous workout, visit the sauna to complete the ultimate fitness session.

Enjoy Fine Dining

Why not start your day with an appetizing breakfast buffet with a plethora of hot and cold foods from around the world? You can enjoy all of this and much more in the relaxing environment created at the Gallery Restaurant.

Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 10:30 during the week and 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the weekend.

This was the BEST way to start our day exploring the city of Melbourne and we can truly attest that after eating the buffet here, we didn’t need to eat anything else until late in the day.

Traditional breakfast menu items are readily available but I was particularly excited to see the refreshing selection of fruits and low-carb options for those that prefer to watch their calorie intake.

A variety of local fresh fruits are available as are granola and oatmeal options for those that prefer a little more fiber in their dietary intake.

The Gallery Restaurant is spacious and full of beautiful decor that creates the perfect ambiance to enjoy your breakfast.

Sampling the coffee bar was a unique experience especially given that I had never used one of these systems before. Don’t worry, there are plenty of friendly staff on hand to help you create your favorite espresso!

Tired and hungry after exploring the beautiful city of Melbourne? The Gallery Restaurant is open from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM daily serving a variety of a la carte delicacies that will likely intrigue your taste buds. Dishes such as Gippsland Grain Fed Porterhouse Steak, Seared Rockling Fillet, and Chargrilled Mount Leura Lamb Loin all sound delicious.

A fine selection of local wines are the perfect accompaniment to any of these dishes or perhaps a lighter option but the highlight here is enjoying your dinner while admiring the views across nearby Fitzroy Gardens.

If you are looking for something a little more casual, the Park Lounge bar is the place to be. Enjoy a relaxing drink with friends or grab a bite to eat at lunch here before heading out to explore everything that attracted you to this beautiful city.

Open until Midnight daily, you can be sure that the friendly bar staff will do everything to ensure your experience is enjoyable. We spent both nights here enjoying a drink while getting some work done, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the lobby decor and relaxing surroundings. Don’t forget to head back between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to enjoy “Happy Hour” with $5 drinks available!

The Rooms

Guests staying at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park have a variety of room options to choose from. We stayed in a Superior Suite which was incredibly spacious, had awesome views overlooking the Melbourne CBD and immediately made us feel like home with all the amenities you can think of in a typical hotel room.

Walking into the room the size was certainly the most obvious aspect that stood out. Measuring a little over 600 square feet, there is plenty of living space to enjoy your stay at this hotel.

The lounge has a large flat-screen TV and a comfortable sofa that could easily seat four or five guests.

A bar area with snacks available for purchase and chilled drinks in the refrigerator cater for all of your needs.

There are two doorways that can be closed for extra privacy between the living space and the bedroom but once you enter the sleeping quarters, you are treated to a gorgeous king size bed, the perfect spot to relax and close your eyes after a long day exploring Melbourne.

We want to save the best until last – the bathroom is beyond INCREDIBLE!

We have stayed in some pretty amazing hotels around the world that have awesome bathrooms but the crisp white finish throughout this bathroom and the size certainly made us realize that the Pullman Melbourne on the Park is up there with the very best.

Pristine chrome fittings are the perfect accompaniment and create a trendy looking bathroom where you can relax and wind down.

A large bathtub is the primary focal point of the room along with a spacious walk-in shower fitted with C.O. Bigelow amenities to ensure you don’t need to worry about forgetting shampoo or other essentials.

Summary

We felt incredibly privileged to stay at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park for many reasons though perhaps the most important was the relaxing experience that we encountered throughout our stay.

Friendly customer service costs nothing in my opinion and the Pullman brand can be proud of each and every member at the Melbourne on the Park location. We were greeted every time we passed through the lobby and our daily breakfast inside the Gallery Restaurant was well catered by the local chef and his staff.

Would we stay at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park again? 100% YES! No questions, this is hands-down a place that we can highly recommend to anyone heading to Melbourne in the near future. Our only regret was having to leave after two amazing nights. We would have loved to stay for the Australian Open but hopefully, we will have the opportunity to return in the near future.

Gardens by the Bay Tour – How to Enjoy Nature in the City?

During our recent trip to Singapore, we headed to the spectacular Marina Bay Sands to explore the wonderfully acclaimed “Gardens by the Bay”. If you have never been to any botanical gardens, taking a Gardens by the Bay tour would be a great place to start because this is the epitome of natural beauty.

There is something quite beautiful about wandering around a botanical garden with the floral collections in full bloom. Whether you are an avid botanist or simply someone that enjoys a relaxing stroll through a garden, visiting the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is a rewarding experience that you should consider the next time you head to the Lion City.

When we heard that the Gardens by the Bay are Singapore’s way of creating a “City in a Garden”, we knew that this was going to be an attraction we had to explore. Opening in 2011, this landmark development captures the essence of Singapore through the beauty that is emitted in the various components that form the gardens.

Gardens by the Bay Information

If you are visiting Gardens by the Bay for the first time, the most noticeable aspect of this location is how central it is in relation to Singapore’s central business district.

Our world of gardens for all to own, enjoy and cherish.

It’s a wonderful asset for any city to have green space in the heart of its urban environment and despite the amount of urban regeneration that has taken place over the decades, this is the perfect spot to just get away and relax among nature’s finest flora and fauna.

Location

We used Singapore’s MRT public transportation network to reach the Gardens by the Bay and it couldn’t have been any easier. Alight at Bayfront MRT station and take exit B to follow the underground passage that will lead you to the Dragonfly Bridge which you will cross before entering the Gardens by the Bay.

The iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel will be to your left as your eyes are transfixed solely on the huge greenhouses that stand inside the grounds. It’s a relatively short walk from the Bayfront MRT station to the conservatories but if you prefer to save your energy, why not hop on the Gardens by the Bay shuttle which gives you all day access for only SGD 3.

Circle/Downtown Line – Alight at Bayfront MRT Station
East/West Line – Alight at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. Take bus number 400 and alight at bus stop number 03371 along Marina Gardens Drive.

Parking is readily available at the Gardens if you are driving and both main car parks have a small surcharge. You can enjoy free parking in Bay South car park on weekdays between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM so please keep this in mind as you plan your visit.

Hours

The conservatories are open between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM and the outdoor gardens are open between 5:00 AM and 2:00 AM.

Admission Prices

As always, these prices are subject to change and we strongly recommend checking the Gardens by the Bay website for the latest prices.

Conservatories – The standard rate for adults visiting both conservatories is SGD 28 (USD 20) with discounted rates available for children (under 12) – SGD 15 (USD 10). If you are resident in Singapore, you can enjoy even more discounted rates.
OCBC Skyway – Visitors can enjoy this attraction for only SGD 8 (SGD 5 for children and seniors).

Gardens by the Bay Tour

Our visit to the Gardens by the Bay was a little shorter than we initially planned due to time constraints but it did give us an opportunity to explore both of the iconic conservatories. You can easily spend a full day relaxing here and with dining options readily available, there is no reason why you shouldn’t make the most of your visit to the Gardens.

Of course, anyone visiting Singapore will likely have a long list of other attractions worth visiting such as those included in this awesome Singapore travel guide but based on our experiences, we strongly encourage you to allocate enough time to enjoy the Gardens by the Bay.

We spent about 3 hours exploring the grounds and inside the conservatories but we left feeling that there was more to experience. Whether you prefer to take a leisurely stroll around all the attractions or spend more time in a specific location, the Gardens by the Bay has enough for all the family to appreciate.

This is a great learning experience for everyone and what better way for kids to learn about science, nature, and botany than first-hand experiences inside the Gardens. Let’s take a look some of the top spots you can expect to explore on a tour here.

Cloud Forest

As we entered the Cloud Forest conservatory, we were immediately transported to a world of natural beauty.

A stunning waterfall instantaneously captures your imagination as you walk through the entrance and begin the journey through this magical land. It was no surprise when we heard that this is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall – it’s a spectacular sight and worth the admission fee alone!

There was a real sense of mystery as we slowly walked through the Cloud Forest, appreciating the diverse vegetation that thrives in the controlled temperature inside the conservatory.

Plant life from tropical highlands and diverse floral samples from all corners of the globe can be found here but I have to admit, every corner we took our eyes and ears were attracted to the gorgeous waterfall.

After taking the elevator to the top of the Cloud Forest, we were treated to a beautiful aerial walkway across the treeline canopy, a representation of the vegetation that flourishes at these higher altitudes.

The aerial views around the Cloud Forest and also outside the glass structure gives visitors the opportunity to admire nature from above though the reality is wherever you are at the Gardens by the Bay, natural beauty is all around you!

Flower Dome

After spending quite some time inside the Cloud Forest, we headed to the Flower Dome with no real expectations but feeling that there was no way it could compete with the amazing beauty inside its counterpart. How wrong could we be! The moment we entered the Flower Dome, we were treated to a mass of color and a gorgeous array of flowers from around the world.

We later learned that the Flower Dome adopts a cool-dry climate of Mediterranean regions such as Spain, Italy, and California, hence the reason why there is such a thriving community of plant life inside the world’s largest glass greenhouse.

Visiting at Christmas, we were treated to an array of festive cheer with a myriad of decorations providing the perfect setting to enjoy both the holiday season and the masses of plant life inside the conservatory.

We both really enjoyed exploring the Flower Dome and our appreciation of botany is certainly much higher after this experience.

I was particularly intrigued by the Succulent Garden where the Cacti, Aloes, and other plants that prosper in arid conditions are located. This part of the Flower Dome is definitely somewhere you need to be careful where you put your hands. Don’t worry, there is plenty more inside the dome that is a little less harsh.

Towering above the rest of the plant life is the African Baobab tree. Regardless of your favorite color or floral preference, you can be sure that as you explore the Flower Dome, you will likely stumble across something that sparks your interest to find out more information.

Supertree Grove

If you have seen pictures or read stories about the Gardens by the Bay experience, it’s likely you will have seen the iconic images of the vertical gardens known as the Supertree Grove. Towering above the rest of the exhibits, these tree-like gardens stand between 25-50 meters tall and include large canopies that exude a rich light display best seen after dark.

There are 18 different supertrees scattered throughout the Gardens, 12 of which are collectively known as the Supertree Grove. If you are fortunate to experience the OCBC Skyway, you will be connected between two of these iconic trees while having the opportunity to admire a birds-eye view of the Gardens and the iconic Singapore skyline.

Summary

Our Gardens by the Bay tour was an amazing experience albeit a relatively short visit which was the only negative aspect. We can’t wait to go back to experience more of this gorgeous attraction in Singapore but for anyone that has a passion for nature, this is a great place to get away from city life and explore the beauty of a natural environment in the heart of an urban area.

Even though we barely touched the surface in terms of all the attractions here, the Cloud Forest was probably our favorite attraction due to the amazing waterfall that will always grab your attention. There is definitely something for everybody to enjoy once you are inside the Gardens and this horticultural destination is a great combination of mystery and natural beauty waiting to be explored.

We have been fortunate to visit botanical gardens around the world but there is something quite unique and distinctive about this set of gardens in Singapore. Tiger Sky Tower Review – How to Enjoy an Amazing Skyline?

Imagine a city without skyscrapers…Imagine a city without a modern transportation infrastructure…Imagine a city without global conglomerates dominating the economy. Are any of these imaginable in the world we live in today? Rather than arguing this, we want to focus on admiring and embracing all of the above. Our recent visit to Singapore gave us the opportunity to contemplate all of this as we ventured to the summit of the city’s tallest observation deck – the Tiger Sky Tower. Hopefully, our Tiger Sky Tower review will give you an insight into why visiting Sentosa Island is worth the visit.

Although we didn’t have time to enjoy the ‘stereotypical’ Sentosa Island experience, our visit to the Tiger Sky Tower gave us the chance to see the transformation of Singapore over the years. What was once a “colonial backwater,” Singapore has since been transformed into a “global metropolis” (The Telegraph, 2015) and this is apparent from the top of the tallest observation deck.

Sentosa Island

A visit to Sentosa Island may immediately capture your imagination and bring back memories of your childhood but there is plenty here for all ages to enjoy.

This magical island is just a short ride from Singapore’s central business district and the transformation of this island into a fun-filled theme park has certainly increased the number of visitors to this part of Singapore.

You can reach Sentosa Island using Singapore’s efficient public transportation system. Head to HarbourFront MRT station and then follow the signs to the Sentosa Island cable car.

There are a number of stations once you arrive on the island but the most central location is Imbiah Lookout and this is a perfect starting point to experience all of the attractions.

For those preferring to drive and avoid public transportation (we can attest that the journey from VivoCity to Sentosa is pretty hectic but it’s affordable and it avoids the hassle of renting a car), you can pay a small admission charge and drive across the Sentosa Gateway.

Tiger Sky Tower Information

With the South China Sea in one direction accompanied by the island’s beaches and the urban development of Singapore’s stunning skyline on the other side, it’s inevitable that visitors to the Tiger Sky Tower will be in awe as they peer down and appreciate the beauty throughout Singapore.

Our visit to the top of this tower enabled us to not only gain a birds eye view of Sentosa Island and gain a better appreciation to the popularity of this attraction but also enjoy the skyline that is particularly attractive at night.

Admission Prices

The below prices are accurate as of the time of this post being published and are subject to change. Check the Tiger Sky Tower website for the latest admission prices before visiting.

Hours

The Tiger Sky Tower is open daily between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM. We strongly recommend paying a visit both during the day and in the evening to enjoy the infamous Singapore lights that illuminate the skyline. Be sure to arrive no later than 8:45 PM as this is the last admission to the tower.

History

The construction of the Tiger Sky Tower was completed in 2004 by a German manufacturer. It stands at 131 meters above sea level and the enclosed air-conditioned cabin can accommodate up to 72 visitors on any journey to the top of the world!

Journey to the Top

Our adventure to the top was everything we could have wished for. The cabin felt spacious, cool (which in Singapore’s hot, humid conditions was a great benefit!) and offered the perfect environment to appreciate the 360-degree panoramic views of Singapore.

The ride is relatively slow giving you ample time to capture pictures from every angle and the best part of the journey is how the cabin gently rotates around the 360-degrees.

Even if you miss that all important picture, you can be sure that you will have another opportunity as the cabin rotates around albeit from a slightly higher (or lower on the return trip down) elevation.

Detailed commentary is provided during your journey highlighting some of the key attractions and landmarks around Sentosa Island and beyond.

If you are fortunate to visit the Tiger Sky Tower with favorable weather, you may have the opportunity to see as far as Malaysia and Indonesia. It was a little overcast during our visit but we still enjoyed panoramic views of the South China Sea and the Southern Islands.

Singapore – Traditional vs Contemporary

The highlight has to be the views across Singapore’s downtown metropolis. Perhaps because I am an architecture lover, I appreciated the skyline more than regular guests but just taking a moment to think back on how this city has developed over the decades makes you realize how a nation can thrive through urban regeneration.

Singapore has a very westernized feel to it but there are clearly still a lot of authentic, cultural facets that helps the locals and visitors alike feel a sense of “home” when exploring this city.

As we slowly rotated around the summit of the Tiger Sky Tower, we certainly gained a greater appreciation of this city and inspired us to explore more after we headed back downtown following our visit to Sentosa Island.

Summary

Tiger Sky Tower is certainly an attraction that you should consider visiting on your next trip to Singapore, especially if you plan on spending some time on Sentosa Island. We would love to take a trip back to experience more of the attractions on Sentosa but we definitely enjoyed our journey to the “top of the world” (or at least that’s what it felt like).

We have been fortunate to visit some of the world’s tallest structures, including our recent visit to Dubai which saw us experience the view from the top of Burj Khalifa and although the Tiger Sky Tower is not in that category, it is well worthy of the admission fee to get a better perspective on the city of Singapore. You never know, you may be able to claim that you saw two other countries (Malaysia and Indonesia) if the weather cooperates!

We have frequently heard that Singapore is the best place to experience for ‘first-time’ visitors to Asia and we can both attest that there is plenty of truth to this. We feel that The Westin Singapore Hotel perfectly exemplifies this culture. The friendliness of all the employees that work at this hotel was a great example of this philosophy. We were welcomed the moment we walked through the doors and everyone was an absolute credit to not only the Westin brand but also the nation they represent.

If you are looking for a hotel located in a perfect spot to explore Singapore’s rich central business district and more authentic neighborhoods such as Chinatown, the Westin is the perfect accommodation option.

For those fortunate to have a room facing the sea, you will have an awesome view overlooking Sentosa Island and also a shipping lane that is never ending. Alternatively, the Singapore skyline and business district is attractive (at least for the architecture lovers out there like myself) so regardless of your room, I don’t think there is a bad view anywhere inside this hotel.

As you will find out, the views continue to get better and better from various parts of the hotel, including the Lobby Lounge, the outdoor swimming pool area, and the restaurants (more on the delicious cuisine later).

It’s not often that we will start our review of a hotel’s amenities by discussing the lobby area. However, the moment you leave the elevator in The Westin Singapore and notice the glamorous lobby area, you will realize why we included this in our review.

The most noticeable aspect is the size of the lobby and the huge ceiling featuring gorgeous, modern chandeliers that add to the overall appearance.

The decor throughout the lobby is a mix of contemporary and classic, creating a mood that will attract guests to spend time here while sipping on their favorite beverage. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or prefer something a little stronger, you can be sure that the Lobby Lounge will have an aperitif to meet your needs.

We spent quite some time relaxing in the leather armchairs while listening to a local pianist perform Christmas classics, creating the perfect mood for guests at the hotel. Take a moment to glance outside and admire the spectacle of Sentosa Island and the South China Sea.

Seasonal Tastes offers a relaxed, casual environment but a combination of traditional Asian cuisine along with international dishes ensures that everyone is catered for. It is the ultimate ‘personalized’ experience as you are free to sample a little bit of everything or perhaps just indulge in more of your favorite dish.

You can even enjoy one of your favorite drinks in the morning if you want to start the day in fine style! Head over to the bar area and pour a glass of champagne to celebrate an awesome experience at the Westin Singapore.

Entering the room, you immediately capture the soothing feel of the decor through the choice of colors and the amount of natural light that filters into the bedroom.

The moment you lay down, the signature heavenly bed whisks you away into another world of relaxation. This has to be the most comfortable bed that we have ever slept in, the difficulty being getting up in the morning.

It’s difficult to give a direct comparison with other hotels in Singapore given that The Westin Singapore Hotel is the only place we stayed during our short time in this nation. However, what we can say is that our experience was amazing and we can 100% recommend this hotel to anyone planning to visit this beautiful country.

Luxury Swimming Pool

I have to start with the swimming pool because it’s such a gorgeous amenity that will certainly help attract guests.

For those that prefer to relax by the pool with their favorite drink, there are views towards the Arabian Gulf while other parts are secluded for a more private experience.

The pool itself is incredibly spacious with two different parts separated by a bridge. Perhaps an early morning swim will see you enjoy a strenuous workout, while later in the day you may prefer to relax in the cool water while admiring the sunset. We felt privileged to enjoy a gorgeous sunset on the night we stayed at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan.

Plethora of Cuisine Options

One of the benefits of staying at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan is having the ability to sample a variety of dining options from around the globe.

The Sunset Bar is inevitably the choice for those lounging around the pool area, with tapas dishes and light snacks readily available while enjoying the relaxing environment of the pool.

For those wishing to experience an “authentic Arabian flavor”, Kamoon is a perfect choice. The charming atmosphere and intricate decor throughout the interior of this restaurant, making this a must-try for anyone. Even if you are a little skeptical about trying new food, Kamoon offers freshly prepared dishes that will entice you to expand your palate.

Horizon is the obvious choice given that entering the lobby area of the hotel, this is the one that immediately grabs your attention.

Don’t let this fool you into thinking it will be a standard hotel restaurant because the cuisine does everything but disappoint!

Themed buffet dinners are the highlight here and during our visit, it was “Chinese” night which I have to admit looked pretty tasty and that’s from someone that doesn’t like Chinese food!

Although we opted against this, we didn’t have to wait long to experience Horizon.

The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of dishes, from traditional Arabian to the standard breakfast items we are all familiar with.

From hot dishes to freshly prepared cold options, the Horizon breakfast buffet offered a plethora of menu options to satisfy everyone’s palate.

We don’t frequently entertain room service but given that it was relatively late when we got back to our room, we decided to sample Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan’s in-room dining experience.

A roast chicken sandwich accompanied by chips (french fries) was a delicious late night snack and the service was extremely quick, friendly and oriented towards ensuring we had everything we needed to enjoy our evening.

Fitness Facilities

If the spacious swimming pool or the prospect of taking a stroll or run along the pristine beaches that line the Arabian Gulf are not enough to satisfy your fitness needs, don’t worry there is plenty more at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan.

A fully-equipped gym is available as are two outdoor tennis courts and two international size squash courts, all of which can be utilized by guests at the resort (there is a surcharge of AED 100 per hour to rent the squash court).

Fitness professionals are readily available to provide in-depth guidance on best practices to ensure you remain healthy and in shape while staying at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan. Given the amount of amazing cuisine available here, it’s a nice touch having this service ready to take advantage of.

The outdoor swimming pool is open from 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily.

The Rooms

Have you ever checked-in to a hotel and looked around admiring all of the amazing amenities and then think, “This has to be too good to be true!” This is exactly what crossed our minds as we headed upstairs to our suite.

Surely the experience couldn’t get any better right? We were so WRONG! As we opened our door, we were greeted with a spacious room overlooking the Arabian Gulf. WHAT AN AMAZING ROOM!!!

There are not enough superlatives in my vocabulary to describe how breathtaking our room was. Large windows surrounded our room providing panoramic views across the beach and beyond.

The only drawback to this hotel room was the fact we were only spending one night here. It simply wasn’t enough, as this room at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan defined “ultimate Arabian luxury.”

The bathroom was fully equipped to meet all your needs and the water pressure in the shower I later found out was possibly the best I have experienced anywhere around the world. The exquisite details emitted the character and ambiance we felt the moment we stepped inside this hotel and the room provided the final touches to an amazing stay.

I am not going to go into details about everything inside the room because this may just spoil it for you! You will just have to make a reservation and experience this luxury for yourselves.

Summary

I think you have probably painted a pretty clear picture about the Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana resort in Abu Dhabi. We frequently find flaws and disappointments in hotels that we stay at around the world but there was nothing at all negative about our experience here.

If you are planning to spend a few days in Abu Dhabi, we highly recommend considering Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan as a viable, affordable option. We cannot wait to return to the Arabian Peninsula to experience those breathtaking sunsets and Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan is the perfect destination to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere throughout this city.

How to Enjoy the Amazing View from the Top of Burj Khalifa?

The imperious sight of the world’s tallest building is unmistakable. Towering above the Dubai landscape at 829.8 meters (2,722 feet), the Burj Khalifa is a breathtaking sight and can be seen up to 95 kilometers (59 miles) away. But if you are a modern-day architecture lover like I am, there will be only one thing on your mind – getting to the summit to admire the amazing view from the top of Burj Khalifa!

When you consider the height of the Burj Khalifa, it certainly makes many of the world’s other leading structures look pretty small. We have been fortunate to experience many in the Western Hemisphere, such as the Willis Tower in Chicago and of course, the Empire State Building in New York City which was once the world’s tallest building (I know that may surprise you but it held this accolade until 1972).

History of Burj Khalifa

Let’s take a look at the history behind the world’s tallest building in comparison to other leading landmarks around the world so hopefully, it will provide a better perspective about the views that you will see once you climb to either the 125th or 148th floor of the Burj Khalifa.

The above graphic immediately gives a clear indication as to the size of Burj Khalifa in comparison to other iconic structures around the world. It is over twice the size of the Empire State Building and literally dwarfs this skyscraper along with many of the world’s other “super skyscrapers”.

I think it’s fair to say though that in the present day super skyscraper talk, the Burj Khalifa is on a completely different level to other structures.

Until the completion of the Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, expected in 2020, there is going to be nothing else close to this structure that is well acclaimed as the pride of Dubai.

The history of the Burj Khalifa dates back to 2004 when construction first started on this mega skyscraper. The structure was finalized in 2009, at least in terms of the exterior and is made primarily of reinforced concrete.

In terms of architectural design, this has a unique ‘neo-futuristic’ design, stereotypically associated with the modern day era and an idealistic belief in the need to embrace technology. What was once deemed to be impossible, is now the future of architecture.

What You Need to Know

It’s critical that you are well prepared before heading to the Burj Khalifa. We suffered the experience of having to wait for quite a long time to collect our tickets at ‘will call’ but if you are purchasing tickets on the day rather than online, we encourage you to get there as early as possible. However, before purchasing tickets, it’s worthwhile knowing exactly how to reach the entrance to the Burj Khalifa.

Directions to the Burj Khalifa

If you are utilizing the Dubai Metro system (it’s a great service and we strongly encourage you to use this!), you will alight at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. The entrance to the Burj Khalifa to visit the ‘At The Top’ viewing platform(s) is located on the lower ground floor of the Dubai Mall.

What you won’t realize after deboarding the metro is that you will be required to walk at least 10-15 minutes along above ground skywalks/tunnels until you reach the Mall. Head to the Lower Ground floor and hopefully you won’t have too long to wait!

Admission Prices

The first choice you will need to make is to decide whether you want to visit level 124/125 or go all the way to the highest viewing platform at level 148. There is a dramatic difference in the ticket prices so ultimately it will be down to personal preference. I think either option you choose, you can certainly claim that you have been “on top of the world” at least in Dubai anyway!

Also, please note the above prices are for ‘non-prime’ hours. There is a surcharge on all ticket prices if you choose to visit between the hours of 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM daily. Prices are also substantially more expensive if you want ‘immediate’ entry access so again, it’s beneficial to go ahead and book your tickets in advance!

The View from the Top of Burj Khalifa

As with all tall structures, patience is a virtue when it comes to heading through security and waiting for the elevator to take you to the top. There is plenty of information to keep you occupied, providing an in-depth history of the Burj Khalifa construction and exactly what it takes to build a structure over 2,700 feet tall.

After about 20 minutes, our journey to the top started. We had tickets to levels 124 and 125 and the elevator takes you all the way to level 125 after which you can take the spiral staircase to level 124. The moment we left the elevator a staff member greeted us and said, “Enjoy the views!” She wasn’t lying!

Superlatives like awe-inspiring, breathtaking, panoramic and stunning spring to mind. I could go on but none of these will ever do the 360-degree views around Dubai justice from the top of Burj Khalifa.

Whether you are keen to find your favorite Dubai landmark or simply want to admire the scenery, you could easily spend hours at the top. Time literally gets away from you but that’s ok because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to admire beauty from the world’s tallest building.

Dubai is an incredible city at street level but from a birds-eye perspective, it’s even more mesmerizing. The gorgeous Burj Al Arab hotel stands proudly in the distance while in the other direction you can appreciate the gold/spice souks that provide a more authentic feel to Dubai.

I love the inclusion of various telescopes that offer full HD displays and high zoom capabilities. From such a high vantage point, it’s imperative that visitors have the opportunity to pinpoint certain landmarks at ground level and these new telescopes offer this with ease.

Six of these telescopes are on level 125 and another six one level down. The beauty of these telescopes is that they are FREE to use! All too often when you are in viewing observatories, there is an additional charge to zoom in on your favorite attractions around the city.

Summary

Words will never do enough justice to the view from the top of Burj Khalifa. Hopefully, some of our pictures will inspire you to visit Dubai because the Burj Khalifa alone is enough of an attraction to make this a city you need to add to your bucket list.

We had an amazing couple of hours admiring the views around Dubai and even though we ‘technically’ didn’t visit the highest viewing platform, I don’t think anyone can argue that even at levels 124 and 125, the views are breathtaking.

I think Dubai is one of those cities that you cannot help but fall in love with. There are so many reasons to encourage visitors to explore this city, none more so than the Burj Khalifa. Even though it’s a relatively new attraction, it’s an iconic reflection of Dubai and one that you HAVE to sample whenever you visit the United Arab Emirates.

We were incredibly fortunate to stay in the gorgeous Shangri La Hotel in Dubai and have a suite overlooking the Burj Khalifa. It’s just one of those landmarks that you can never tire of staring at. The design may be quirky and not necessarily to everyone’s taste but no one can take away the fact that it is an architectural marvel.

Craighead Forest Park – A Guide to the Best Trails in Jonesboro

Craighead Forest Park is one of the highlight attractions in the city of Jonesboro Arkansas. Ok, so there is not a lot going on here and given that it is our current hometown it’s fair to say we spend quite a bit of time here enjoying the gorgeous lake and awesome trails throughout the park. If you love nature and the outdoors, a visit to Craighead Forest Park is worthwhile and you will gain a greater appreciation of why this is such a popular spot in north-east Arkansas.

Whether you are a highly skilled mountain biker, a seasoned cross-country runner or perhaps just someone who enjoys relaxing among the flora and fauna, Craighead Forest Park is the perfect spot to visit.

Heather will concur that I am a huge critic of Jonesboro, primarily because of its geographic location in the heart of the “Southern” United States but also because I find there is very little to do here. Fortunately, Craighead Forest Park offers visitors to Jonesboro the opportunity to experience the natural environment and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings.

Craighead Forest Park Information

History

The history of Craighead Forest Park dates back to 1937 when the Young Men’s Civic Club of Jonesboro started working on the lake to create an attraction for locals to enjoy. The park has seen substantial change over the years and today it covers 692 acres of scenic landscape located on Crowley’s Ridge.

A Distinctive Recreational Park in Northeast Arkansas

The park is open daily from 6:00AM and 10:00PM. All vehicles must remain on the designated roads around the park and since the recent development of the new pedestrian walkways, foot traffic is required to stay on those sidewalks or trails throughout the park.

Things to Do Inside the Park

There are plenty of opportunities for recreational activities at Craighead Forest Park. Whether you enjoy a relaxing afternoon fishing or perhaps you want to entertain a family picnic, Craighead Forest is home to a myriad of activities.

Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do.

Fishing and Wildlife

The 60-acre Craighead Forest Lake is home to a variety of fish that attracts locals and visitors alike to test their skills. The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission frequently stocks the lake with a combination of bass, bream, catfish and crappie.

Walking around the trail that surrounds the perimeter of the lake, you will likely see local anglers ready to pounce on their next catch.

Picnics

Several picnic areas can be found throughout the park, offering gorgeous views around the lake and ample space to enjoy a family picnic.

Visitors can also reserve one of the various pavilions that are scattered around the park.

Camping

If you looking for a perfect spot in north-east Arkansas with rustic surroundings, Craighead Forest Park is the ultimate location. It’s certainly not five-star luxury but for those willing to entertain the campground experience, this is definitely an option worth considering.

The asphalt camping spaces are all equipped with water, electric outlets, picnic tables and access to a grill. The views across the lake make this a great location for a weekend getaway.

Hit the Best Trails in Jonesboro

Despite recent renovations to create a pedestrian walkway around part of the park, there are numerous trails that intertwine throughout the forest creating a haven for avid mountain bikers.

Rugged terrain provides challenging yet rewarding trails for those brave enough to head off-road. If you are thinking about a leisurely bike ride, Craighead Forest probably isn’t the best idea given the rolling hills of Crowley’s Ridge that provide such an awesome experience for the more experienced riders.

But don’t worry, if hopping on two wheels is a little too adventurous, you can don your hiking boots and head out into the trails and explore the rustic scenery.

Perhaps the most scenic of all the trails at Craighead Forest Park is the 2.4-mile trail around the edge of the lake. The trail is relatively well maintained and easy to walk around.

If you are seeking something a little longer, the trail around the road is paved and with a distance of just under 3 miles, is certainly a great workout, especially when you are faced with a couple of strenuous hills that you have to climb.

Phase one of the community project to develop a brand new walkway around Craighead Forest Park has recently been finished in 2016, characterized by a layer of tarmac that provides a comfortable walking experience for visitors around the park. The installation of outdoor workout equipment is certainly a huge benefit for those wanting to enjoy a complete workout in the open-air.

Craighead Forest Park is one of the highlight attractions in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Ok, so there are not too many reasons to speak of but if you are passing through Jonesboro, be sure to head over and explore everything this beautiful park has to offer.

The walking/biking trails alone make this an attractive location especially with the gorgeous landscapes across the lake. You never quite know what wildlife you will stumble across but if you love the outdoors, Craighead Forest Park is a must-see experience!

2016 Year of Travel – Will This Inspire Your Crazy Wanderlust?

2016…WHAT A YEAR! And that’s in more ways than one. From our perspective, it was yet another EPIC year of travel with so many amazing adventures and an endless list of stories to share. That’s the beauty of having a travel blog though because we can share all of these inspiring journeys and much more with all of our readers around the world. As we begin the New Year in New Zealand, we want to reflect back on our 2016 year of travel.

A Year of Turmoil?

Let’s start by taking a moment to reflect on the troubles the world has faced over the last 12 months. The world is a beautiful place but unfortunately, the threat of terrorist attacks has continued to exist. Cities like Berlin, Istanbul, Brussels, Nice, and Orlando have been directly impacted. But that’s not going to stop us from traveling and nor should it stop you! Check out our collaborative post on how we answered the question, is it safe to travel right now?

The United Kingdom have decided to “go their own way” after the whole Brexit fiasco in June when the UK chose to leave the European Union. And finally, who would have thought we would be saying the next US President would be a certain Donald J. Trump? A crazy year for sure but enough about politics and let’s share some inspiring reasons to get your wanderlust juices flowing.

2016 Year of Travel

If you read our 2015 year end review, you will know that 2015 was a pretty incredible year. Surely it couldn’t get any better than that? Wrong! Here are some more pretty astounding statistics about the last 12 months.

We have now visited all 50 US states!!
We have now visited 27 countries.
We have achieved Hilton Honors Diamond status again for 2017 which means we stayed in a minimum of 30 hotels (or 60 nights which I think is probably a closer estimate!)
We have done all of this and we are still working full-time jobs, though of course, it feels like we have two full-time jobs with the website!

The statistics don’t even begin to share the amazing adventures we had, so just like the last time we did one of these reviews, we are going to highlight 10 of our favorite destinations from 2016.

10. South Dakota

Over the Memorial Day weekend, we embarked on a road trip to visit our 47th and 48th states – the Dakotas! Admittedly, these were two of the states that we didn’t really have too many high hopes for. You don’t hear much about either of these, except for perhaps Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, primarily because it is frequently noted as an overhyped tourist attraction. However, in our opinion, the critics of South Dakota were proved wrong!

We entered South Dakota in the Southeast corner by Sioux Falls and spent an awesome couple of hours exploring this beautiful city, most notably the gorgeous Falls Park where we could easily have spent all afternoon relaxing by the river and impressive rapids.

A drive across I-90 saw us stay overnight in Rapid City before spending the morning walking around the perfectly named City of Presidents. A visit to Mount Rushmore to completely disprove the critics was an enjoyable experience and we finished our visit to South Dakota by taking a Badlands scenic drive.

9. Minnesota

It’s not the most convenient state to reach from Arkansas but we made two trips to Minnesota, for TBEX and for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National. Both visits were epic road trips though our first visit was primarily for the TBEX conference.

It did give us the opportunity to meet some great folks that work on promoting the beautiful “Land of 10,000 Lakes” and it helped us arrange a return visit at the end of September for the Ryder Cup. Prior to attending the final two days of the tournament, we headed to the beautiful city of St. Cloud to stay at the gorgeous Country Inn and Suites and explore what this destination had to offer.

From beautiful botanical gardens by the river to playing golf at Territory Golf Club, our visit was memorable and certainly helped us realize that locations like St. Cloud are just as beautiful as cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul.

8. Dubai

Home of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, our visit to Dubai started our round the world trip in December. This was our first visit to the Middle East and we had an amazing time exploring Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai is understandably sometimes referred to as the “Las Vegas of the Middle East”, at least in terms of the glitzy appearance (of course, minus the gambling and drinking), but one thing that I noticed is the cleanliness of this city in comparison with its American counterpart.

The view from the top of Burj Khalifa is everything you could imagine from the world’s tallest structure. Breathtaking 360-degree panoramas are amazing and it’s well worth the admission fee.

Our stay at the Shangri La Hotel in Dubai was memorable for a myriad of reasons. It’s the ultimate relaxation hotspot and situated in a perfect location to explore the city.

I can’t wait to return and explore more ‘authentic’ Dubai, as our visit was cut short after only a few days. We took a quick stroll around the gold and spice souks that are a popular tourist spot in the city but I know there is so much more to experience in the heart of UAE.

7. New York City

Start spreading the news I am leaving today I want to be a part of it New York, New York

Every time we arrive in New York City, I can’t get those infamous Sinatra lyrics out of my head. We have published several posts on our site about our experiences and adventures around the Big Apple but let’s be honest, no one can ever get tired of reading about this magical city. Ok, perhaps we are a little biased because we both LOVE New York City so much but it just has that effect on us.

Clambering up those subway steps in Times Square and allowing your eyes to adjust to meet the dazzling lights always seems to put us into a trance that makes us realize that we are in the big city. But it’s not just the iconic tourist attractions that keep us wanting to go back.

In early 2016, we headed to New York City to experience the New York Pass. This is an awesome product if you are a first time or return visitor to Manhattan as you are able to utilize this on a variety of attractions around the city. The drawback is of course time limitations and trying to experience as many attractions/tours to get good value for money.

We visited New York City twice in the space of a couple of weeks, to explore the Lower Manhattan region while experiencing the amazing Millenium Memories package offered by The Millenium Hilton and a second time to attend the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

This second visit allowed us to explore ‘outside’ of the Big Apple and we took an awesome day trip from New York City to Bear Mountain to admire the awe-inspiring views across the Hudson Valley.

6. St. Augustine

July 4th weekend rolled around with us having a predicament…we had nothing planned which was strange for us given that we usually take advantage of the long holiday weekends! We decided to take a last-minute road trip to Florida to explore the northeast coast from Jacksonville to St. Augustine.

Did you know that St. Augustine is the oldest town in the United States? We didn’t, that was until we visited this quirky yet beautiful town! Being an avid golfer, St. Augustine is also the home of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a tour of this venue was certainly an experience we will both cherish, minus my pathetic attempts at getting a hole in one on their infamous challenge hole!

If you are spending some time in this part of Florida, we strongly encourage you to visit downtown Amelia Island. Whether you are a foodie connoisseur or perhaps love architecture, this outlandishly beautiful destination is worth exploring.

5. Oklahoma City

One of the highlight trips of 2016 was our short weekend in Oklahoma City! It’s probably not one of the first cities that springs to mind when you think about places to explore but after spending a couple of days in the heart of Oklahoma, we well and truly fell in love with this city.

When you stay in awesome accommodation such as the Ambassador Hotel in the heart of Oklahoma City, it certainly puts you in the right frame of mind to explore the city. What we loved so much about OKC was the walkability of this city!

We walked everywhere from the Ambassador Hotel and discovered the best neighborhoods in Oklahoma City that we figure everyone needs to know about. Whether it’s the Spanish inspired Paseo Arts district or the rejuvenated Automobile Alley, Oklahoma City is a plethora of distinctive neighborhoods waiting to be experienced.

Did I also mention that we attended an OKC Thunder NBA game? That’s right, we were able to watch the likes of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook against the Utah Jazz and this was definitely an experience we cherished.

And one final reason to visit Oklahoma City…The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum! A trip to anywhere in Oklahoma wouldn’t be the same without visiting something associated with country and western…Need I say anymore!

4. Auckland

What better way to celebrate the end of 2016 and bring in the New Year than a country we have been wanting to visit for a long time – New Zealand. We arrived in Auckland on December 30 and spent a week exploring the North Island but perhaps the highlight during our time in this city was venturing to the top of the Sky Tower and admiring the amazing views across the city.

Just like any other city around the world, we find it beneficial to take a trip to the top of the tallest building to get a birds-eye view of the city and figure out exactly where you want to explore next. We headed across to the Auckland War Memorial Museum which offered a poignant reflection on not only military history but other important events associated with New Zealand heritage.

3. Singapore

We are experts in Asian culture now after visiting both UAE and Singapore on the same trip. That’s a slight exaggeration but we had a great time in Singapore, despite the intense humidity and heat that made it stiflingly difficult to walk around and explore as much as we like to in a new city.

Our stay at the Westin Singapore was another magical hotel experience. In fact, everywhere we stayed on our round the world trip was amazing. We were incredibly fortunate to find such great hotels and the Westin Singapore was the epitome of modern relaxation.

Venturing out for our “24-hours in Singapore”, we headed to Sentosa Island to experience the Tiger Sky Tower which was an enjoyable journey providing scenic panoramic views of the city.

Heading back to the mainland, we visited the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel before exploring the Gardens By The Bay which is a really cool experience. Forget your standard botanical gardens, these are modern and trendy with a lot to see and learn.

2. Melbourne

We all love the stereotypical Winter Wonderland and White Christmas but what about celebrating the holiday season Down Under? I think everyone should experience a Christmas in Australia at least once in their lifetime and we have now been fortunate to do this twice, both of which were amazing.

We spent Christmas 2016 in Melbourne and I think it’s fair to say we have fallen in love with what is classified as the “world’s most liveable city!” The Melbourne Star offers a 30-minute journey around the Observation Wheel, providing gorgeous views of the impressive skyline.

The Eureka Skydeck is Australia’s tallest building and is well worth the admission fee but the best aspect is “The Edge” where you are transported out three meters on a perspex ledge and given the opportunity to peer down almost 300 meters.

If you are looking for a bucket list experience in Australia at Christmas, why not head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day for the opening day of the test match. We watched the Australians play Pakistan at the MCG and although cricket may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s a fun experience watching the crowds and of course, the cricketers in action.

The Great Ocean Road is another breathtaking experience and is a great day trip from Melbourne. This is a stunning stretch of coastline and offers countless amazing views across the ocean and scenic landscapes.

1. Alaska

I’m not sure if the previous nine destinations are in any particular order but we can both agree our favorite spot in 2016 was Alaska! It was our 49th state and we had the best experiences here.

A scenic drive from Anchorage to Denali National Park saw us venture into the park and have amazing encounters with grizzly bears, caribou, and more wildlife.

The highlight was undoubtedly seeing the peak of North America’s tallest mountain, Mt. Denali, on several occasions. We can now lay claim to being part of the “30% club” but the various angles we captured of the peak were breathtaking.

Having spent a couple of days exploring Denali and the drive north from Anchorage, we spent the last part of our trip in Seward, by taking a cruise of Kenai Fjords National Park, courtesy of Major Marine Tours.

Summary

WOW…WHAT A YEAR! I don’t think we can emphasize enough just how amazing 2016 was. We have so many stories to tell, particularly from our end of year trip around the world. Hopefully, some of these destinations spark your interest and we can inspire you to head out in the near future to experience some of this amazing world we live in.

We have been privileged to take a lot of trips over the last few years and we hope that this will continue in the future. Although we have achieved some personal goals, such as reaching all 50 US states, we are under no illusions that we have seen everything. In fact, we have barely touched the surface but that’s the beauty of traveling the world.
