10 Best Lakes in Banff National Park You Need to Experience

What’s the first lake that springs to mind when you think about Canada or specifically, Banff National Park? I would argue that a pretty high percentage will likely say Lake Louise and that is of course with good reason. When you think about the best lakes in Banff National Park, the reality is you are spoiled for choice. We want to highlight 10 of the very best lakes that you cannot afford to miss when you next visit Banff and the surrounding area.

Banff National Park is the epitome of natural beauty with a myriad of gorgeous lakes, waterfalls and other breathtaking natural scenery waiting to be discovered. During our recent trip to Banff and Jasper National Parks, we enjoyed a spectacular drive from Jasper to Banff and throughout this time, we used this as an opportunity to visit some gorgeous lakes while also planning some others that we wanted to experience while in the Banff area.

Best Lakes in Banff National Park

Rather than focusing solely on Banff’s iconic lakes such as Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, we want to recommend a couple of lesser known options that we would argue are equally as spectacular. Visiting Banff at the end of May was the perfect time as we experienced this gorgeous part of Canada in the “transition” phase, so were able to get the best of “frozen” lakes and also see many that had already thawed out.

The Summer months of June through September are the optimal time of the year to experience Banff if you want the stereotypical glacial waters and the gorgeous colors we associate with them. With the spectacular alpine backdrops, it’s inevitable that these types of scenes will be some of the most memorable experiences you will have.

Whether you are exploring the northern part of Banff National Park or simply want to stay in and around the alpine town of Banff itself, a gorgeous glacial lake is never too far away. Let’s start by looking at what we would all agree is the most famous of them all – Lake Louise.

Lake Louise

Does Lake Louise deserve to be number one on the list of the best lakes in Banff National Park? This is entirely subjective and only you can decide which is your favorite but one thing is for sure, anyone visiting Banff would be crazy to not spend some time exploring this iconic attraction.

Lake Louise is renowned for the breathtaking views and scenery across the turquoise colored glacial waters in the heart of Summer. With the nearby Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise one of the iconic hotels in the world, this is undoubtedly one of the most frequently visited spots throughout Banff National Park.

The Victoria Glacier on nearby Mount Victoria creates a picture-perfect backdrop to the turquoise waters of Lake Louise but if you visit during the winter months, you will have to be satisfied with a wintry scene with a completely frozen lake. Let’s be honest, it’s not a bad scene at any time of the year!

As I mentioned, we visited during the transition phase at the end of May and Lake Louise was one of the lakes predominantly still frozen but with the front part of the lake thawed. It was a pretty crazy scene watching the chunks of ice floating around before heading downstream and down the Bow River.

The town of Lake Louise is located just off the Trans-Canada Highway and consists of a small shopping center, bakery, deli, convenience store and restaurants. If you are planning on staying in Banff National Park, why not stay in the vicinity of Lake Louise…you certainly won’t be short of amazing hiking trails and awe-inspiring scenery!

Where to Stay

If you are visiting Lake Louise and want to have the ultimate luxury experience, there really is only one choice – the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Be prepared to have your credit card take a pretty serious hit but I think it’s one of those once in a lifetime opportunities and well worth the cost.

Moraine Lake

Visitors to Lake Louise will inevitably want to explore Moraine Lake which is frequently left in the shadow of the more popular natural attraction. However, when you see the view from the top of the moraine rock pile overlooking Moraine Lake and the gorgeous mountain range in the background, you will quickly realize that this is a spot that you cannot afford to miss.

Did you know the popular view overlooking Moraine Lake was actually used on the 1969 and 1979 $20 Canadian dollar bill editions?

It’s an incredible scene and although we visited when the lake was still completely frozen over, this takes nothing away from the beauty we had the opportunity to admire.

The view of the mountains behind Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks may be renowned as the “Twenty Dollar View” but I would argue that this view is worth much more than $20! It’s one of those locations that you could admire all day.

Where to Stay

So after a night of luxury at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, I’m sure you will be raring to let your credit card take a break. If you are willing to drive from Banff, you will have plenty more accommodation options available including the following which is a great place to stay in the town of Dead Man’s Flats.

Lake Minnewanka

One of the highlights of our trip to Banff National Park was experiencing the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive. The focal point of this drive is undoubtedly Lake Minnewanka itself, 21km long lake ideal for swimming, kayaking, and fishing along with a myriad of hiking trails and spots to enjoy a relaxing few hours. It’s actually the longest lake in the mountain parks of the Canadian Rockies.

A glacial lake with emerald-green water surrounded by breathtaking mountains makes Lake Minnewanka an incredibly popular spot among visitors to Banff. Why not take a relaxing boat cruise around the lake to enjoy spectacular panoramic scenes of the alpine surroundings?

Alternatively, you can take a stroll along the rocky beach areas and find the perfect spot to read your favorite book while admiring the scenery.

It’s one of those locations, just like many other spots in Banff National Park if we are being honest, that you could easily allow time to fly by without noticing it. But Lake Minnewanka is just the start of the scenic drive and there are plenty more amazing attractions to come! You never know what wildlife you may stumble across also at this lake.

Two Jack Lake

If you were impressed by Lake Minnewanka, wait until you stumble across Two Jack Lake. As we drove the scenic loop, we turned a corner and immediately fell in love with the view across Two Jack Lake. This is the ideal spot to enjoy a picnic or simply relax by the lake taking in the breathtaking panoramas surrounding you.

I think it’s fair to say that Two Jack Lake frequently lies in the shadow of Lake Minnewanka, primarily because of the size difference but in terms of natural beauty, we would argue that Two Jack Lake is far superior.

We will leave the final decision to you but this stunningly picturesque lake is an ideal place to grab the stereotypical red, Adirondack chair and soak in the natural beauty.

Johnson Lake

Another gorgeous spot around the Lake Minnewanka loop is Johnson Lake. If we had any regrets from our trip to Banff National Park, it would be not spending enough time exploring this part of the scenic drive.

Unfortunately, the road leading to Johnson Lake was closed during our visit and rather than parking and taking the short hike, we opted to explore other parts of Banff. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it’s definitely on our radar for our next trip to Banff.

Fortunately, we have a number of friends that have experienced this part of the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive and the pictures we are sharing give you an idea of the beauty here. If you are looking for a relaxing hiking trail, the loop around Johnson Lake is definitely a great spot for beginners yet more advanced hikers will still love this because of the spectacular views it offers around the shores of the lake.

This is the ideal location to enjoy the flora and fauna of Banff National Park, especially if you are visiting at the right time of year when the park is blooming in full color.

Cascade Ponds

Before you experience the three gorgeous lakes around the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive, we strongly encourage you to visit Cascade Ponds. It may not have the size or magnitude of some of the other best lakes in Banff but that takes nothing away from the beauty here.

The gorgeous bridge that crosses the pond is the ideal setting for formal pictures, particularly with the perfectly calm water that creates a mirror reflection with the mountains forming the stunning backdrop.

Prefer to enjoy a picnic before heading on one of the various hiking trails in this region or perhaps on a boat cruise of Lake Minnewanka? Don’t worry, Cascade Ponds is yet another viable alternative and its proximity to Banff town center makes this a great location to grab a bite to eat and take this to a spot where you can enjoy ultimate relaxation.

Where to Stay

Lake Minnewanka is perfectly located close to the town of Banff, so you will never be short of accommodation options. Our recommendation for visiting Banff is that you book your hotel/hostel in advance because it’s a popular tourist spot all year round.

Peyto Lake

If you have ever seen a Canadian lake with gorgeous, turquoise colored water, it’s very likely that you will have been looking at Peyto Lake. Those amazing picture postcard images that we always see and assume it’s just a piece of work created by Photoshop is, in fact, the real thing! Not only is Peyto Lake one of the best lakes in Banff National Park in terms of beauty, it’s arguably one of the most beautiful around the world.

So where exactly does this color originate from? Peyto Lake gets its color from the large amounts of glacier rock flour that flow into the glacial lake during the summer months and visitors to this part of Banff are given the opportunity to admire this awe-inspiring scenery until the lake freezes over later in the year.

A viewing platform is available and easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway (Peyto Lake is located about an hour north of Banff) but for those trying to avoid the crowds, head down the trail to another viewpoint where you can enjoy equally spectacular panoramic scenes.

Hector Lake

When you visit Banff National Park, there are certain places that you just have to visit and you are probably already aware of them. However, it’s those iconic hidden gems that you stumble across that are always likely to be the most memorable and this is exactly what we experienced when we visited Hector Lake during our drive from Jasper to Banff.

Hector Lake is a small glacial lake located on the Bow River and surrounded by the Waputik Range which offers a spectacular backdrop (as I’m sure you are now associating with all glacial lakes in Banff!) to this lake. Our visit was late in the day when the sun was setting and we had the most amazing scene with the reflection of the mountains on the calm water and also the tips of the peaks showing the sun reflection.

It was a magical experience and certainly pushed Hector Lake to the very top of our favorite lakes not only in Banff National Park but also Canada.

Vermilion Lakes

Head west of Banff and you will arrive at a gorgeous set of lakes known as the Vermilion Lakes. The three lakes are formed in the Bow River Valley and this is a real hotspot for wildlife sightings, possibly one of the best-known locations throughout the national park. Mount Rundle in the background is a towering sight but anyone visiting this part of Banff National Park would be hard-pressed to take their eyes away from this spectacular series of lakes.

Whether you love biking trails, hiking routes or experiencing a kayaking adventure on the lake, the Vermilion Lakes is definitely a great destination to enjoy all of the above. However, if you prefer to relax by the lakes and enjoy the breathtaking scenery…well, we couldn’t blame you for that one!

Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife, particularly the various species of birds that pass through the Vermilion Lakes region, including bald eagles, osprey, herons, and swans.

Bow Lake

Bow Lake is a relatively small lake but that doesn’t mean it is any less spectacular than some of its larger counterparts throughout Banff National Park. Similar to Hector Lake, Bow Lake is located on the Bow River and is situated at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters.

A popular hike among visitors driving along the Icefields Parkway is to park at Peyto Lake and admire the scenery there before heading downstream to Bow Lake. This is one of the easiest hikes throughout Banff National Park but be prepared to allocate 1.5-2 hours for a road trip hike between these two gorgeous natural attractions.

The beautiful turquoise green color is again the highlight of Bow Lake but perhaps your eyes may wander as the potential of a grizzly bear sighting is possible in this part of Banff National Park. Regardless of your fortune in seeing a bear (or misfortune if you get a little too up close and personal with a bear!), the beauty of Bow Lake is an experience that cannot be missed!

So, where exactly are the best lakes in Banff National Park? I think we have found a nice selection here but the beauty of exploring Banff is that there are so many others natural attractions waiting to be discovered. This is certainly not an exhaustive list of all the lakes worth exploring but it’s fair to say, you could easily make a trip to Banff simply to explore the plethora of gorgeous lakes.

I am sure you are looking for our favorite lake recommendation. Honestly, that’s an almost impossible question simply because each lake has distinctive features that make it equally spectacular to the next. If we were placed on the spot right now, we really do have a soft spot for both Two Jack Lake and Hector Lake, simply because of our personal connections and experiences we had there.

There is a reason why the Big Apple is so popular for visitors from all corners of the globe and with so many things to experience, it’s no surprise that there is content everywhere you look promoting this amazing city. Each time we visit NYC, we try to find something “new” that we haven’t experienced before. Given that we were staying in the Chelsea neighborhood, we explored the area and took our very own Chelsea Market tour.

Chelsea Market – a hidden gem you may be wondering? Well, to us it was because we didn’t intend on visiting but the reality is it’s a pretty popular spot for locals and tourists alike!

However, if you are looking for an “authentic” New York City experience, particularly if you consider yourself to be a foodie, Chelsea Market is definitely a place you cannot afford to miss on your next adventure around Manhattan. Let’s take a look at exactly why we were so enamored by this charming location.

Chelsea Market Tour

Are you ready to take your very own self-guided walking tour of Chelsea Market? Having visited Gansevoort Market a couple of years ago (we visited there when it was in the old location), we can well and truly attest that the Greenwich Village Meatpacking District and Chelsea neighborhoods are a haven for foodies looking to experience unique offerings in New York City.

The beauty of Chelsea Market is that it’s more than just a food hall. You could easily visit here early in the morning to grab breakfast and espresso before spending several hours exploring the boutique shops and other quirky novelties that can be found in this gorgeous building.

By the time you have finished visiting the various shops throughout the market, well folks, it will be time for lunch and yet again, you will be spoiled for choice with so many delicious options available to you!

I almost forgot to mention, for the architecture lovers out there, this building offers a unique, eclectic blend of architectural beauty unlike anywhere else that we have explored in NYC.

With over 35 vendors purveying their rich selection of delicacies inside Chelsea Market, you need to allocate enough time to experience the very best of this urban delight. Here are some of the top spots you cannot afford to miss based on our very own experiences.

The Lobster Place

If you love seafood, undoubtedly the best place to visit not only in Chelsea Market but perhaps the whole of New York City is The Lobster Place. A wonderfully named location that pretty much gives away what you can expect to experience here…lobster! And with that, it’s some of the finest lobster in the north-east.

Prefer something other than lobster? Don’t worry, this isn’t the only attraction here despite the name. A plethora of seafood options is available for locals to purchase while for those that prefer to sample these seafood delicacies in-house, lobster rolls along with a sushi and sashimi bar are all experiences that everyone can sample when visiting Chelsea Market.

It may be a stereotypical British or Aussie tradition but when you are next in New York City, head to Tuck Shop inside Chelsea Market to sample a delicious pie in one of a variety of flavors. Whether you are intrigued by the traditional beef pie or perhaps want to sample something a little more flamboyant such as Thai Chicken Curry, Mac N’ Cheese or Pulled Pork with Slaw, there is something at Tuck Shop for everyone.

For only $7, you can enjoy an authentic Aussie style pie inside the outpost in the heart of Chelsea Market. After exploring everything this marketplace had to offer, this was the spot where we enjoyed lunch and we have nothing but great things to say about this place. I tried the traditional beef pie and Heather opted for the chicken pot pie.

Both were enough to satisfy our appetites and although it can be a challenge finding somewhere to sit inside the market, it’s the local experience that you won’t want to miss here.

Ninth Street Espresso

An early morning visit to Chelsea Market will likely inspire you to make a quick trip to Ninth Street Espresso to enjoy some of the best coffee in New York City. Ok, so perhaps this is a biased opinion but there is a reason why this incredibly popular spot is busy throughout the day.

Ready to hear a unique reason to visit Ninth Street Espresso? It’s one of the only coffee shop locations in Manhattan that roasts their own coffee in-house! Ninth Street began sourcing and roasting coffee at the Pulley Collective in Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2013 before opening the location inside Chelsea Market in 2016.

Creamline

If you are ready to sample delicious cuisine serving local products, head to the Chelsea Creamline restaurant to experience a wide variety of options on their menu. Classic recipes such as a grilled cheese, cheeseburger, griddled PB&J, crispy fried chicken and a traditional corndog are all available on the menu at Creamline.

Not only is this a local spot where you can enjoy fine cuisine, it’s the overall experience of visiting a restaurant that is focused on serving the best food rather than a fancy 5-star luxury dining spot. For those of you that love classic American fare, this is undoubtedly one of the best places to enjoy this throughout New York City.

Don’t forget to sample dessert or an afternoon snack with a delicious milkshake or ice cream after choosing from a variety of eclectic flavors.

Chelsea Market is a haven for foodies out there. With so much variety and authentic, local cuisine to choose from, it’s a place you cannot afford to miss if you want to experience the very best of New York City from a local perspective. Our experience saw us spend several hours inside Chelsea Market and although we only sampled a couple of the vendors inside this urban marketplace, we can well and truly attest that this is a place that should be on everyone’s radar. When you travel as much as we do, there are always going to be destinations that immediately spring to mind in terms of creating memorable experiences. For us, there is one place that stands head and shoulders above everywhere else – Iceland! Driving around the Iceland ring road is undoubtedly the best way to experience this country but regardless of how much time you choose to spend there, you can be assured you won’t be short of amazing encounters. Visiting in summer or winter, the list of amazing things to do in Iceland is endless.

Whether you are intrigued by the best waterfalls in Iceland or perhaps the intriguing prospect of seeing the incredible Northern Lights, Iceland is a nation that truly has it all. We have been incredibly fortunate to visit this beautiful country on two occasions, once in the heart of summer and the other time in the freezing depths of winter.

In our opinion, to fully appreciate the Icelandic experience, you have to visit during both seasons because it’s so unique at either end of the spectrum.

Driving the Iceland Ring Road

During our recent visit, we enjoyed an amazing Iceland road trip where we focused our attention on exploring not only the iconic waterfalls that everyone will fall in love with but also some lesser-known gems that we think should be on your radar. Here’s our top tip…grab a rental car or campervan and hit the open road!

The total distance around the Ring Road is 830 miles (1336 km) and “technically” could be driven is a little as around 17 hours. However, this is NOT feasible and NOT something that we recommend. Why? Because you will miss out on the true Icelandic experience!

Our adventure last 7 days and nights and to be honest, it was an incredibly fast-paced adventure (to be fair, that’s how we travel). Realistically, you can accomplish this in as few as 7 days but I think 10-14 days is probably the optimal number if you are trying to experience a lot of what Iceland has to offer.

Ok…so you are now ready to start exploring but again, that can be an extremely daunting prospect with so many resources out there and a myriad of things to see and experience in Iceland. From the variety of authentic, local restaurants to the gorgeous “Harpa” concert hall overlooking the old harbor, Reykjavik is undoubtedly a great place to visit to start your Icelandic adventure.

One of Europe’s iconic churches can be found in Reykjavik, at least in terms of the architectural design and location. Renowned as the “church on top of the hill,” Hallgrimskirkja is one of those attractions you cannot afford to miss, not to mention the breathtaking panoramic views you can admire from the summit of this architectural beauty.

Kerið Volcanic Crater Lake

Driving the Golden Circle is unsurprisingly one of the best attractions around Iceland and certainly with good reason. However, moments after leaving the Ring Road before you start the iconic Golden Circle route, there is an attraction that is yet again frequently missed because visitors are so concerned with reaching the likes of Geysir and Gullfoss. Kerið is a volcanic crater lake that epitomizes much of Iceland’s stereotypical natural beauty.

Dating back approximately 3,000 years, Kerið is a natural attraction that deserves to be on your Icelandic itinerary. For a small admission fee, visitors can hike around the perimeter of this volcanic crater before heading down to the banks of the lake to enjoy the relaxing environment surrounding this attraction.

The Golden Circle

Perhaps the most popular drive in Iceland is the amazing “Golden Circle” where visitors can enjoy a variety of amazing natural attractions. Geysir is the first stop on the Golden Circle drive and although this geyser rarely erupts, it is part of a larger geothermal area full of other active geysers.

Strokkur, for example, erupts on a pretty regular schedule and visitors will likely experience this multiple times while exploring this area.

A short drive from Geysir leads visitors to Iceland’s iconic waterfall, Gullfoss. Translated as “Golden Falls,” this waterfall is an incredible sight and with various viewing platforms that provide aerial and close-up encounters with Gullfoss, it’s no surprise that this is one of Iceland’s popular tourist attractions.

Thingvellir National Park has a geological and historical significance around the Golden Circle. Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where a series of tectonic activity takes place and this ridge can be seen inside Thingvellir. In addition to this geological phenomenon, Thingvellir was once the home of the Icelandic national parliament.

South Iceland Waterfalls

Iceland’s south coast is scattered with amazing waterfalls but there are two that stand out from the rest. Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss are spectacular for a variety of reasons and each one offers a unique opportunity to experience the waterfall from different angles.

Skogafoss is almost 200 feet in height and is frequently accompanied by a rainbow to provide the perfect photogenic landscape. Visitors that wish to gain the full experience at Skogafoss can enjoy the campground directly in front of the waterfall alongside the Skógá River.

Why not take a hike to the summit of Skogafoss by challenging yourself to climb the 370+ staircase that climbs the mountain? It’s worth the effort because the views are beyond breathtaking.

A short drive along the Ring Road will lead you to Seljalandsfoss where visitors can enjoy a trail that leads them behind the waterfall. Be prepared to scramble a little on the second half of the hike because of the immense spray that is released but regardless of how wet you get, it’s an unforgettable experience!

These are just a couple of examples of the best things to do in South Iceland…but don’t worry, there are more!

Vik and Reynisfjara

Heading to the beach may not be your first thought when considering what to do in Iceland but there is something quite magical about the black sandy beaches along the south coast. Reynisfjara is a perfect example and along with the basalt stacks that can be seen along the coastline, it is definitely an iconic reflection of the beauty present throughout Iceland.

The town of Vik is a popular spot for visitors who want to find somewhere to stay along the southern Icelandic coast. You never quite know what you will stumble across in Vik, including the opportunity to mingle with stereotypical Icelandic horses that are grazing in the fields just outside the town.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

When it comes to immense beauty across the Icelandic landscape, there are not many spots that can compare with Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This amazing natural landmark epitomizes everything there is to love about Iceland. Large chunks of glacial ice can be seen floating around this lagoon before heading out into the Atlantic Ocean and frequently washing up on the nearby “Diamond Beach.”

Visitors to Jokulsarlon should consider taking one of the seasonal tours onboard either the zodiac or amphibian boat. This is a great way to learn more about the Vatnajökull Glacier, in addition to admiring the gorgeous lagoon.

For those that want a more secluded environment, perhaps the nearby Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon would be a more appropriate spot to visit as this is equally spectacular.

Seydisfjordur

Renowned as “a place of singing waterfalls and peculiar characters,” Seydisfjordur is a charming town in East Iceland that is perfect for visitors to relax and interact with locals while contemplating potential day trips or hikes around the East Fjords region.

A collection of vibrant, multi-colored wooden houses can be found scattered around Seydisfjordur but it’s the snowcapped mountains and surrounding beauty that makes this town such a gorgeous place to visit.

As you drop down into Seydisfjordur, you immediately realize you are entering a unique part of Iceland. Perhaps because it’s from this location where you can hop on a ferry and head across the North Atlantic Ocean to mainland Europe or simply because this is the best place to visit in the East Fjords region.

Either way, it’s an eclectic blend of architectural beauty combined with gorgeous natural landscapes.

Gufufoss is perhaps the highlight waterfall in this area of Iceland and is an unmistakable attraction as you drop down into the valley heading toward Seydisfjordur.

North Iceland Waterfalls

As your adventure around Iceland continues, you may be forgiven for thinking that the number of amazing waterfalls would only diminish. However, this thought couldn’t be further from the truth as you begin to explore North Iceland.

Waterfalls including Godafoss and Europe’s most powerful, Dettifoss can be found in the stretch of the Ring Road between Seydisfjordur and Akureyri.

Husavik

The northern town of Husavik is renowned as one of the best locations in the world to experience whale watching. Heading out into the open waters from Husavik to have the opportunity to see not only various whale species but also puffins and other wildlife is certainly something that should be on your radar.

If whale watching is something that intrigues you, Husavik has the highest percentage of seeing whales than any other Icelandic location.

After an afternoon out at sea, head back into the town of Husavik to experience fine dining and also the Husavik Whale Museum to learn all about the firsthand encounters you had earlier in the day.

Akureyri

Akureyri is frequently referred to as the capital of North Iceland. This charming city at the base of a fjord is packed full of things to do and a variety of amazing restaurants (plus the BEST ice cream in Iceland!).

The Church of Akureyri is a gorgeous Lutheran church overlooking the city while museum lovers will enjoy the collection available throughout this part of North Iceland. After sampling some of Iceland’s finest fish and chips, head over to Brnja to sample that infamous ice cream! Trust us…it’s delicious.

Throughout England, you will find a myriad of historic cities and landmarks that each have something unique and intriguing that will likely make you want to visit. The city of Lancaster certainly falls into this category and following our recent day trip there, we can well and truly attest that this is a place you will not want to miss on your next visit. As we look at the best things to do in Lancaster, UK (not to be confused with Lancaster, Pennsylvania) you may want to consider spending longer than one day there but all of these landmarks can easily be experienced in what we consider to be one of the best days out in Lancashire.

Before visiting Lancaster, it’s worth noting that this is a city steeped in rich history, deep heritage and potentially “controversy” if you believe legendary stories about the county town of Lancashire.

Lancaster was once known as the ‘hanging town’ and later earned a reputation for ‘lunatics and linoleum’. (Daily Telegraph)

More on this controversial reference to “lunatics and linoleum” later but we want to focus on why Lancaster is such a popular city among locals and visitors alike.

History of Lancaster

The city of Lancaster dates back to 1086 when it was first recorded in the Domesday Book known as “Loncastre.” Given that this city is located on the River Lune, the first part of ‘Loncastre’ references this river (Lon) and the second part comes from the Latin word ‘castrum’ which means ‘fort’.

A Roman fort was built on the hill where Lancaster Castle stands today. You may be wondering where the name “hanging town” came from? Well, Lancaster’s court was based inside the castle and it’s suggested that more people were sentenced to be hung there than any other spot outside of London.

And then we have the “lunatics” of Lancaster…ok, so to downplay this a little, the term ‘lunatic’ was a stereotype associated with the city because it was home to Lancaster Moor Hospital until it closed down in 2000. This was a mental asylum located inside a large complex of towering Victorian buildings in the heart of the city.

Today, this has been converted into luxury apartments and homes! Can you imagine living in this building with such a tragic background? After seeing how gorgeous the apartments are, I’m sure you could be sold on this idea!

Best Things to Do in Lancaster

The moment you arrive in Lancaster, you quickly realize that your day is about to be action-packed. There is a lot to see and plenty of variety to accommodate everyone’s interests. Whether you are an avid historian or an architecture aficionado, Lancaster will surely have something to intrigue you.

Where to Stay in Lancaster?

However, we all too frequently fall into the habit of enjoying the benefits of location and even “brand” names so here are some alternative choices if this is more important during your stay in Lancaster.

Lancaster Castle

Start your visit to the city of Lancaster by exploring one of the most historic landmarks not only in Lancashire but throughout the UK. Lancaster Castle is a medieval castle in the heart of the city that dates back to the 11th-century, though exact dates on the early history of this landmark are relatively unknown. It’s thought that the original castle was built on the site of a Roman fort overlooking the River Lune which would align with today’s location.

In 1164, the castle was placed under royal control but in the early 14th-century, the Scots invaded England getting as far as Lancaster and destroying parts of the castle. The castle was first used as a prison in 1196 although it was during the English Civil War that this became a critical component.

For centuries, part of Lancaster Castle has been home to the county court and ironically it’s here that Lancaster’s stereotype of being a city known as “The Hanging Town” came to fruition.

Those sentenced to death before the 19th-century were taken to Lancaster Moor, a spot close to today’s Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park. It was later decided that it would be more convenient to hang people closer to the castle, so a spot was chosen and is now known as “Hanging Corner.”

Today, Lancaster Castle is open daily for guided tours and open 7 days a week (only closed on certain holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day). Lancaster Priory

If you choose to visit Lancaster Castle first, why not head next door to the gorgeous Lancaster Priory Church for another journey back in history? Designated as a Grade I listed building since 1953, Lancaster Priory is another unknown quantity in terms of the full history of this site. What was here before the construction we see today? Just how far back in history does this go?

It’s thought that a Roman building likely stood on this ground, potentially around the year 200. In 1094, a Benedictine priory was established here, hence the reason it was formerly named Priory Church of St Mary. It wasn’t until the 16th-century that this became a parish church. The gorgeous tower is undoubtedly the highlight characteristic of this church and what you see today was erected in 1759.

Take a stroll inside the church and appreciate the beauty of the intricate details throughout the interior. The church holds regular services just like any other traditional Anglican church so depending on when you visit, you may be fortunate enough to experience a local Lancastrian church service with the local vicar.

River Lune and Downtown Lancaster

Before heading outside of the city center, take a stroll along the banks of the River Lune to admire some of the modern developments by the quayside. The Lune Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge while adding character to the area and is certainly a landmark you cannot miss.

If you are interested in experiencing a little Lancastrian retail therapy, take the short walk from the banks of the River Lune into the heart of Lancaster to enjoy both Marketgate Shopping Centre and St. Nicholas Arcades. Both offer a variety of brand name retail outlets typical of any British city.

Downtown Lancaster is also an opportunity to hop into a local pub, restaurant or cafe to enjoy lunch while you contemplate the rest of the day exploring this part of Lancashire. Don’t forget to stop by Costa Coffee to enjoy your favorite espresso and recharge your batteries before heading outside of the city to explore the gorgeous Williamson Park!

Williamson Park

Take some time to get outside of the hustle and bustle of life inside the city center of Lancaster and head to the gorgeous Williamson Park which covers 54 acres of parkland overlooking the city.

It’s a pretty steep climb to reach the entrance to Williamson Park, so we strongly recommend either hopping on public transportation (bus) or driving there if you have a car. The 2A bus from Lancaster’s bus station will take you relatively close to the park and you can enjoy the walk before you start exploring this spectacular area of green space in Lancaster.

The iconic Ashton Memorial is certainly the focal point inside Williamson Park. Entrance to the park and Ashton Memorial is free and the only charge is for parking your vehicle or if you want to experience the Butterfly House, mini beasts or small animal zoo (available for purchase inside the gift shop).

The Ashton Memorial was commissioned by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife and construction was completed in 1909. Standing at approximately 150 feet tall, this landmark dominates the Lancaster skyline. The first-floor outdoor viewing gallery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Lancashire countryside and across Morecambe Bay.

The Lancaster sundial is another iconic landmark inside Williamson Park and just a short walk over from the Ashton Memorial. The sundial is located on a former bandstand and is considered to be an “analemmatic sundial” (this means that the sundial consists of hour points, rather than lines, positioned around an ellipse).

You can easily spend several hours exploring Williamson Park and this is a great spot to enjoy the sunset over the city of Lancaster after a long day exploring all of the history around this part of Lancashire.

Vilnius to Riga – How to Enjoy a Weekend Trip in the Baltics?

Europe is stereotypically associated with being a closely connected continent where you can easily travel between countries, not only because of the geographic proximity but also because of the Schengen Zone concept and freedom of travel across borders. This is certainly true in the Baltic States area of Europe where you can easily explore countries like Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in just a few days. During our fast and furious journey around the Baltics, we enjoyed an epic 48 hours traveling from Vilnius to Riga. We want to share how to best maximize your time in both cities and also connect easily between the two.

Whether you are an expert in European travel or perhaps a first-time visitor to this part of the world, the reality is the Baltics are not an area that usually hits most radars at first glance. We hope that our experiences around this part of Europe will inspire you to consider adding this to your next European adventure because we can well and truly attest that this is a beautiful region that is well worth discovering.

Explore Vilnius in 24 Hours

If you read our recent post on experiencing the best things to do in Vilnius, you will know that there is a rich history associated with the Lithuanian capital city. The Old Town is undoubtedly the best place to explore and you will quickly find that this is a city you want to walk around and experience on foot.

Take some time to just wander along the back streets and allow yourself to get lost among Vilnius’ spectacular architecture, ancient heritage and eclectic local culture that will immediately make you feel welcome. Countries in Eastern Europe tend to have a negative stereotype about being rather “harsh” in terms of their welcoming but we felt nothing but incredibly welcome in Vilnius.

The locals were friendly and always willing to share their expertise on the best places to try authentic Lithuanian cuisine. You cannot visit Vilnius without sampling Cepelinai, a potato-based dumpling that is found in most restaurants around Lithuania.

Of course, experiencing local cuisine is only part of the reason why you should be intrigued by Vilnius. Here are five landmarks and attractions you cannot afford to miss if you only have a short time there:

Church of St. Anne

When it comes to Gothic architecture in Vilnius, there is no finer example than the spectacular Church of St. Anne. The vibrant red brick design is stereotypical of a flamboyant Gothic style construction and this architectural masterpiece dates back to the year 1500.

Whether you are intrigued enough to head inside to explore the intricate details of the interior or simply prefer to marvel over the beauty on the exterior, this church is an iconic landmark in Vilnius that you won’t want to miss.

Gates of Dawn

The Gates of Dawn is renowned as being one of the most frequently visited shrines throughout Vilnius. Also dubbed as the “entrance to the Old Town” it is at the Gates of Dawn that you immediately realize the beauty throughout this historic city. These gates date back to the early 16th century when they were first mentioned in 1514 and known as Medininkai Gate, as it is on the road to Medininkai.

Inside the Gates of Dawn is one of the most famous paintings around the world – the Lady of the Gate of Dawn. There are only a handful of paintings across the globe where the Blessed Virgin Mary is depicted alone, without a baby in her hands, hence the reason why Vilnius is such a popular spot now among Catholic worshippers.

Three Crosses

The iconic monument of the Three Crosses overlooks the city of Vilnius and although this is a beautiful landmark in its own right, its the story behind this that makes this such a worthwhile spot to visit.

Rumors are that three monks placed these crosses on the hill in the 17th century to pay tribute to a group of fellow monks who were martyred in the 14th century. According to history books, seven monks were killed and seven were tied to wooden crosses and floated down the Neris River as they were ordered to return to the west where they came from.

Whether this is entirely true, well we don’t know but contemplating this history while admiring the Three Crosses is definitely an experience to enjoy while in Vilnius.

Vilnius Cathedral and Bell Tower

“The Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius” or more commonly known as just the “Vilnius Cathedral” is undoubtedly a focal point of the Old Town along with the Bell Tower that is associated with the cathedral.

When you see this spectacular construction, you will immediately realize why this is renowned as one of the world’s finest cathedrals in terms of aesthetic appeal. Both the interior and exterior are breathtaking and you cannot help but admire the design of this classical masterpiece.

There is a small surcharge to climb to the top of the Bell Tower but the views across the Square are well worth it and it also gives you a different perspective on the cathedral from an overhead viewpoint.

The nearby Cathedral Square is the historic city center so it’s definitely an area of Vilnius that you will likely want to spend some time enjoying the surroundings and perhaps hopping inside one of the many local cafes to sample that delicious Lithuanian cuisine that we referenced earlier.

Gediminas’ Tower

Gediminas’ Tower is the remaining portion of the Upper Castle that once stood here overlooking the city of Vilnius. Unfortunately when we visited, this was temporarily closed due to renovations but when this reopens, you can enjoy a funicular railway that takes you from the bottom of the hill to the top.

Once you enter Gediminas’ Tower, you can walk to the summit where there is an observation deck to admire the magnificent panoramic views of Vilnius. For those of you that prefer to stay at the bottom of the Gediminas Hill (or if you visit Vilnius like we did when it was closed!), it’s still an amazing sight to see the Lithuanian flag flying proudly at the top of the tower.

How to Travel from Vilnius to Riga?

Europe is renowned for being a hub of low-cost airlines which makes traveling between nations relatively easy and cost-effective. However, we would argue that you should forget about airlines when you are in the Baltics and instead, consider other forms of public transportation such as the amazing Lux Express coach service.

Fly From Vilnius to Riga

Enjoy the Best of Riga

After the short four hour journey from Vilnius (or even shorter if you opt to fly), you will be raring to get out and explore the Latvian capital. There is plenty to experience regardless of how much time you plan on spending in Riga.

Our recommendation, just like with any other city around Europe, is to just get out in the city and start walking. Riga is an incredibly “walkable” city and it’s really the only way to ensure you visit all of the top attractions.

Of course, if you have longer, you may want to spend time in some of Riga’s museums and the landmarks that we referenced but in terms of a self-guided walking tour, you can enjoy the best of the city in one day.

House of Blackheads

The original building that is now the House of Blackheads dates back to the 14th century. Today, this incredible structure is a focal point in Riga and is such a sought after building that this has recently been the temporary residence for the Latvian president while the nearby Riga Castle was undergoing renovation.

Historically, the House of Blackheads primary function was to serve as a location to promote local business activities. It was inside this building where the city’s main economic functions took place and local traders, known as “Blackheads,” would gather here in the heart of Riga.

Freedom Monument

If you want to visit a spot in Riga that is popular among locals, head to the Freedom Monument which is a landmark honoring the soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence.

This granite and copper monument symbolizes Latvian statehood, national unity, independence, and freedom.The symbol of freedom is a young woman holding three stars above her head, each representing the three historic provinces of Latvia, along with national unity.

When you visit this landmark, you will notice a two-man honor guard that is always present, representing Latvia’s sovereignty.

Three Brothers

The oldest medieval dwellings in Latvia are known as the Three Brothers and date back to the 15th century. These three homes were built by three different men but all from the same family. Each home has a distinctive appears but collectively they are certainly one of the most frequently visited landmarks throughout Latvia.

It’s interesting to note that when you are walking around the Old Town of Riga, you can easily just stumble across this spot as it’s located down a cobblestone street that was once a booming area for local craftsmen.

Summary

Are you ready to experience a whirlwind trip between the Baltic nations of Lithuania and Latvia? It may seem ambitious but the reality is this part of Europe is closely connected and you can easily experience the best of both Vilnius and Riga in 48-72 hours. Did I also mention that both nations are cheap? That’s right, not only can you travel between these two cities for only 5 Euros, you can easily book a luxury hotel in either spot for less than 60 Euros!

Both Vilnius and Riga have Old Towns that you will likely want to spend most of your time experiencing, simply because this is where all of the history and cool architecture is located. However, you will also notice that both cities have a modern area which offers a nice blend of “old vs new” proving that this part of Europe has continued to thrive.

Given that I was born and bred in the heart of North-West England, I want to start by sharing some of the best days out in Lancashire, some which you may be familiar with, while others are what I consider to be “hidden gems” that are well worth experiencing for anyone interested in exploring the very best of England.

Although Heather and I are now based in Arkansas, we take multiple trips back to the UK every year to spend time with my family who lives in Lancashire and has done all their life. Not only does this give us the opportunity to spend quality time with them, it also enables us to take day trips to various parts of the county as I am able to introduce Heather to some of my favorite spots while at the same time discovering new spots that neither of us has explored before.

Let’s start by finding out a little more history and information on Lancashire before taking a look at some of the best spots around the county.

History of Lancashire

Lancashire is located in North-West England and locally known as the “Red Rose” county. The history of Lancashire dates back to the 12th-century but it quickly emerged as a major commercial and industrial region during the Industrial Revolution. By the 1830s, almost 85% of cotton manufactured worldwide was processed in Lancashire!

The relationship between Lancashire and neighboring county of Yorkshire dates back to the 15th-century and The Wars of the Roses when the House of Lancaster (Lancashire) and the House of York (Yorkshire) fought in bloody battles for control of the throne to England.

Here are a few interesting facts about life in Lancashire today:

Population of around 1.5 million
Area of 1,189 square miles
Locals in Lancashire are known as “Lancastrians” even if they are not all from the city of Lancaster!
The main airport closest to Lancashire is in the neighboring metropolitan area of Greater Manchester – Manchester International Airport.

The below map of Lancashire (outlined in red on the map) provides an overview of the area we are focused on exploring.

To put this into a broader perspective, visitors flying into London could rent a car and be in Lancashire in 4 hours. Alternatively, the National Rail service in the UK offers frequent routes into various cities and towns in Lancashire so this is another alternative method for those that don’t want to “drive on the wrong side of the road.”

Best Days Out in Lancashire

Whether you prefer the outdoors and love exploring the countryside or delving into the rich history that we associate with Britain, there are plenty of things to do around Lancashire that epitomizes everything the UK represents.

For those of you that want to experience rural beauty, head out into the heart of Lancashire to enjoy Pendle Hill and surrounding area. Idyllic villages are scattered throughout the county but more on those later. Here are some of the best experiences and places worth visiting in Lancashire.

Experience the Best of Blackpool

Perhaps the highlight tourist hotspot in Lancashire is the coastal town of Blackpool. For folks in the UK, Blackpool is a stereotypical tourist spot where you can enjoy a summer holiday or take a long weekend trip to enjoy a show at Blackpool Tower.

Of course, it’s the “tower” that stands at 518 feet above the town that is the highlight attraction in Blackpool while in the heart of summer, Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a popular landmark worth experiencing for all the family.

For those of you that prefer a less crowded experience, head to Blackpool in the “off-season” during the winter months and enjoy a stroll along the beach. Blackpool has long had a negative stereotype of having poor quality beaches but over recent years, there has been mass renovation and clean-up that has significantly improved this stretch of coast in NW England.

Relax Along the Fylde Coast

Although visitors to the Fylde Coast generally head to Blackpool, there is plenty more worth exploring in this part of Lancashire. In fact, consider taking a day trip to the Fylde Coast and avoid Blackpool completely!

Start out at Lytham St. Annes and take a stroll along the front passing Lytham’s best-known landmark – Lytham Windmill. Since commercial milling here ceased in 1921, the mill has belonged to the town and is a popular attraction for visitors.

Head a couple of miles along the coast to the town of St. Annes where you can enjoy a stroll around Fairhaven Lake or perhaps head into the commercialized area for a little retail therapy or a spot of lunch at a variety of cafes, pubs, and restaurants.

The market town of Poulton-le-Fylde, frequently referred to as just Poulton, is worth visiting if you love exploring historic churches. St. Chad’s Church in the heart of the town is a perfect example of an Anglican church with a rich history. Although the present day tower only dates back to the 17th-century, history suggests that there was a church on this site since the 11th-century!

One of our favorite places on the Fylde Coast is Cleveleys, not only because of the variety of low-cost shops but also because of the cafes where you can enjoy delicious, local cuisine typical to this area.

At the northern end of the Fylde Coast is the port of Fleetwood which formerly offered passenger ferries to the Isle of Man but today is a market town and home to the incredibly popular Fleetwood Freeport Outlets.

Knott End is another town which you can access either from Fleetwood via a short ferry (5-10 minutes) or you can drive around the Wyre Estuary to reach this hidden gem that once inspired artist L.S. Lowry to many of his great works of art.

Historic City of Lancaster

Lancaster is known as the county town of Lancashire and is full of rich history and heritage. Whether you are exploring the historic Lancaster Castle or heading to Williamson Park to explore the iconic Ashton Memorial, this city is a haven of beauty waiting to be discovered.

If you love gorgeous architecture that dates back several centuries, Lancaster is certainly going to be a day trip around Lancashire that you won’t want to miss. Conveniently located on the M6 motorway, Lancaster is a city you will want at least a half day to visit everything on offer.

Lancaster is known for being a “Small City with a Big Story.” When you visit for the first time and start experiencing everything there, you will quickly realize why this tagline is so prevalent.

Ribble Valley Idyllic Villages

Who needs the city life when you can head out into the untouched landscape of the Ribble Valley in the heart of Lancashire and enjoy passing through idyllic villages that will long live in your memory?

The village of Downham is the perfect example. No, it’s probably never been on your radar before even if you are a frequent traveler around the UK but once you approach this charming village, you will immediately realize why we are so passionate about it.

Whalley is another village just a short distance from Downham that oozes character and a rich history portrayed through the architecture throughout this civil parish. Located on the banks of the River Calder, the beauty of this village is epitomized by Whalley Abbey, a 14th-century Cistercian abbey, along with the nearby Whalley Viaduct.

Whether you choose to stay in the Ribble Valley to explore the best villages in Lancashire or perhaps look further afield such as St Michael’s on Wyre near the Fylde Coast, you can be assured that this day trip will immediately take you back in time as you see how these villages have continued to thrive in today’s era.

Ruins of Sawley Abbey

The ruins of Sawley Abbey are well worth visiting if you have any interest in exploring the deeper roots of Lancashire’s history. These ruins date back to the 12th-century when Sawley Abbey was first constructed in 1147 and existed until its dissolution in 1536.

Although the majority of the ruins are no longer in existence, there are parts of the church and refectory still standing and throughout the site are boards depicting the history of the abbey and its former inhabitants.

Visitors to Sawley Abbey will likely use this opportunity to explore other parts of Lancashire. The village of Sawley is a short distance from the aforementioned village of Downham which we love but if you are looking to head elsewhere, you can hop into the Forest of Bowland to enjoy some of the finest natural beauty throughout the county.

The Forest of Bowland is an area of “barren gritstone fells, deep valleys and peat moorland” and certainly is an attractive proposition for those that love the outdoors and want to hike some of the finest fells in Lancashire.

Summary

Lancashire is a beautiful county with so many reasons to justify a visit. Although this post only covers a small number of things to do in the Red Rose county, hopefully, you will be inspired to check out some of these awesome places for yourself.

All of these are places you can visit at any time of the year but of course, everywhere is always better when the sun is out. Unfortunately, just like the rest of the UK, if you wait for the sunshine, you may be waiting a long time! Chicago vs. Jackson – Which City Offers the Best Attractions?

It’s fair to say, the internet is filled with a plethora of information on pretty much every destination in the world. And while those that are well researched and accurately written can be extremely beneficial to would-be travelers, sometimes they just “don’t cut the mustard!”

First up, we’ve got Chicago, Illinois in the north, going toe to toe with Jackson, Mississippi in the south. With similar attractions, it’s a tale of two cities as we put these two US state capitals (Illinois and Mississippi respectively) under the microscope to see who comes out on top.

At first glance, you may think this is a pretty unfair comparison. 99.9% of you may immediately think that Chicago, aka the “Windy City” will be the preference among travelers around the world. Stereotypes suggest that this is a true statement but by starting a series like this, we want to introduce some lesser known destinations and perhaps inspire you to visit “off the beaten path” locations rather than mainstream tourist hotspots.

You may be wondering why we picked Chicago and Jackson? This is an ideal route to take if you are interested in traveling the US by train(to get more information you can click here). Not only can you experience the best of both these cities, you can also enjoy cities such as Memphis and St. Louis in between! In the meantime, and without further ado – let’s discover who does it better!

Attraction One: City Zoos

First up, we take a look at the city zoos. Most major cities offer a zoo as an attraction these days – and love them or hate them, they’re here to stay. But modern zoos have needed to up the ante in recent years – and they should be more than just a place to view animals in cages.

Zoos today need to be actively promoting the health and safety of their inhabitants, rehabilitating animals where possible and making important contributions to environmental conservation. So, how did these two-famous city Zoo’s fare?

Chicago

Covering 35 acres of land is the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. Founded in 1868, it’s one of the oldest zoos in the country, and home to an estimated 1,100 critters.

They have an extensive science and conservation department (always a big plus for us) and a huge bonus is entry to the site is free! Having said that – parking costs a whopping $17 for half an hour, so it would be better to get here by other means! Pretty sneaky eh?!

Jackson

Located within Livingston Park over 110 acres, Jackson Zoo has been attracting people for over 90 years. There are around 380 animals in its care here – but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing – as they clearly have more space for fewer residents – and animals should be free to roam.

They also have a dedicated conservation department and at just $8 for adult admission – it’s not going to break the bank if you’re traveling on a budget.

Best Zoo Verdict: Jackson

It was a close call, but we really do like space for animals to roam – and Lincoln Park in Chicago sounds a little too cramped for our liking!

Attraction Two: City Museums

Museums are extremely popular attractions in cities all over the world – particularly if you’re caught in a downpour! Perfect for wet-weather days, they can keep you entertained for hours, and are excellent sources of education for the city or country you’re in. Aside from masterpiece works of art and historic artifacts, some of the best museums are a little more unique and “hands-on.”

Chicago

The windy city boasts such a ridiculously extensive and eclectic selection of museums we really don’t know where to begin! Perhaps the most famous is the Field Natural History Museum – one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Among other incredible exhibits, The Museum of Science and Industry is home to some awesome Lego structures you can get your hands on and an actual U-Boat you can explore. Then there’s the Art Institute which attracts over 1.5 million admirers annually to its jaw-dropping collection of masterpieces. To name but three!

Jackson

Jackson proudly showcases important and educational establishments across a range of demographics. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is a must to learn of the civil rights movement.

The Smith Robertson Museum explores African-American history and the International Museum of Muslim Cultures promotes a much-needed education about an often-feared religion.

On a more light-hearted note, the Children’s Museum is particularly epic for that “hands-on” experience we so enjoy. You might have to be dragged out kicking and screaming!

Best Museums Verdict: Chicago

While Jackson has some vital and important cultural centers, Chicago’s sheer museum monopoly wins hands down.

Attraction Three: The Walking Tour

Walking tours are all the rage if you’re on a budget and you don’t want to spend hard-earned cash on those jam-packed red sightseeing buses. Better yet, you can do it on your own steam with a good map and a little bit of research. If you are planning a weekend getaway to Chicago or Jackson, heading out on foot is certainly the best way to experience city life. But who wins here in the battle of wandering about town?

Chicago

There are a plethora of sights to be discovered while walking around Chicago, with world-famous attractions and cutting-edge art and architecture to boot. Millennium Park is the go-to destination for a stroll, including the popular “cloud gate” art installation – known affectionately as “the bean.”

The scenic walk along the Chicago River is also a winner, as is wandering along the shores of the mighty Lake Michigan. But just getting lost on a self-guided downtown walking tour among the striking skyscrapers and historic buildings make a walk in Chicago a memorable experience.

Jackson

Lakeland Park is a fine place to begin a stroll in Jackson, and there’s plenty of attractions close by including the aforementioned Children’s Museum and Museum of Natural Science. Downtown Jackson has a rich, cultural heritage clear from the architectural range of its buildings.

Wander the Capitol district to further advance your knowledge of Jackson’s history, explore a variety of churches that celebrate religious diversity and don’t miss the art deco Standard Life building – the most photographed in town. Many of these sights are well within walking distance of each other – so you can go easy on your feet here.

Best Walking Tours: Tie

Alright, so we just might be playing fair to keep everyone happy – but both cities have a lot to offer a walking tour and we couldn’t decide. And isn’t it nice when everybody wins?!

The Romance of the Rail

It’s a split decision, so you’re going to have to make up your own minds! These two awesome and culturally diverse cities are over 1000 kilometers apart, but since when is that going to stop you visiting both?! Take a train between the two and experience the difference between the north and the south. To quote Cary Grant in “North by Northwest” –

beats flying doesn’t it?

Summary

We have been fortunate to visit both Jackson and Chicago on several occasions and have to admit that each has a unique character that continues to draw us back for return visits.

That is when you know you have a city worth visiting because there is something new to explore each time. Jackson, Mississippi may not be the first US city you think about visiting but after reviewing the museums, zoo and walking tours, I think it’s a fair assessment that this city is well worth being on your radar!

How to Enjoy a Weekend Road Trip from Memphis to Nashville?

Do you enjoy the flexibility and spontaneity that comes with taking road trips? Is there anything better than hitting the open road for a long weekend getaway and experiencing the very best of various locations? Both of these are our ideas for a great weekend trip and we are extremely fortunate to be located close to Tennessee where we can enjoy the amazing drive from Memphis to Nashville. Both cities are awesome and although they are only 3 hours apart and located in the same state, their unique differences are what makes them both hugely popular among visitors to this part of USA.

Have you considered visiting Tennessee and combining both Memphis and Nashville into one trip? Let’s take a look at how you can accomplish this during a 72 hour (or even 48 hours if you are really pushed for time) trip around the “Volunteer State!” Essentially we are going to give you a breakdown of the best way to spend 24 hours in Memphis, 24 hours in Nashville and then a little bit of flexibility and drive time in between.

Whether you are road tripping from outside of Tennessee or perhaps starting your adventure by flying into Memphis, this guide will introduce you to the very best of both cities and a few experiences you may enjoy in between.

Road Trip from Memphis to Nashville

A little over 200 miles, the drive from Memphis to Nashville along I-40 is one of the easiest trips you can take and will likely take you somewhere in the region of 3 to 3 1/2 hours. If you opt to take this direct route and spend more time enjoying the best of Memphis and Nashville, there is very little along this stretch of I-40 that will likely entice you to stop.

Here are a couple of stops along the route that may spark your interest:

Jackson, Tennessee – the largest town in between Memphis and Nashville is worth stopping if you want to grab lunch or a late dinner depending on when you choose to drive between the two cities. Jackson is also home to the Casey Jones Home and Railway Museum, dedicated to the former locomotive engineer and situated next to his birthplace.
Loretta Lynn’s Ranch – Located 65 miles west of Nashville and only 7 miles north of I-40 on Highway 13, this ranch is certainly a unique “southern” experience that you may want to experience if you are looking to sample authentic life in Tennessee. You may even want to consider spending a night here but we will leave that decision to you!

If you have a little more time and want to experience the heart of Tennessee, why not avoid I-40 and take an alternative route along the iconic Natchez Trace Parkway. You have a couple of options open to you here depending on how much of the Parkway you want to experience but be warned, the speed limit is a mere 50mph (40mph in parts).

Head to Tupelo, Mississippi from Memphis before taking the Parkway all the way to the outskirts of Nashville if you want the ultimate experience.

Memphis – Explore the Home of Elvis

When you hear the words, “Memphis, Tennessee,” what’s the first thing that springs to mind? I would argue that 99% of you are likely going to say Elvis! So if you are visiting Memphis for the first time, why not embrace the love of Elvis and take a visit to his former home at Graceland?

Of course, Memphis is so much more than Elvis Presley and as you will see, 24 hours in the so-called “Bluff City” is barely enough to touch the surface of this vibrant city. Here is our recommended list of places to see and where to eat if you only have a short time in Memphis.

Graceland

If you are an Elvis fan, taking a tour of Graceland is an experience you won’t want to miss. Not only is Graceland the most famous attraction in Memphis, it’s one of the iconic rock and roll residences anywhere in the world. We have been fortunate to tour this residence on several occasions and each time there is something different to experience.

The 13.8-acre estate has been preserved and transformed into a hugely popular tourist attraction that helps maintain Elvis’ legacy and position as one of the world’s greatest musicians.

Whether we are just learning more about the life of Elvis and his family or enjoying his greatest hits, Graceland is the place to surround yourself with everything about Elvis. Take a tour of his private jet and many of the other museums presenting exhibits from Elvis’ life.

When you leave Memphis and choose to head to Nashville via Tupelo, you can enjoy a tribute to the King in his birthplace town!

Length of Time Required: You can easily spend at least a half day but realistically, allocate 3-4 hours to experience the best of Graceland.

Downtown Memphis and Riverfront

After spending the morning touring the amazing Graceland residence, why not head downtown to explore the heart of Memphis. You may have heard that Memphis is referred to as “Bluff City” and heading downtown offers the opportunity to find out why.

Located directly along the banks of the “mighty” Mississippi River, downtown Memphis is an eclectic blend of modern and historic neighborhoods with plenty of things to do and experience.

Take a stroll along the Memphis Riverfront and head to what we consider to be the coolest Bass Pro Shops anywhere in the United States. This retail outlet opened in the Memphis Pyramid, a former events venue which famously hosted the boxing event between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

Downtown Memphis is home to the FedEx Forum where the NBA Memphis Grizzlies play their home games in the so-called “Grindhouse” because of their dedicated fans and style of play. The Memphis Redbirds, an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals play their home games at Autozone Park which is a short walk from the FedEx Forum, so for the sports lovers visiting Memphis, the downtown area is definitely going to appeal.

Of course, the iconic location in downtown Memphis is Beale Street. Home to many famous bars and restaurants, this is the stereotypical home of “Rock N’ Roll.” You may consider taking a tour of the nearby Gibson Guitar shop or perhaps head to the real birthplace of Rock N’ Roll and take a Sun Studio Tour.

Length of Time Required: If you choose to take either the Gibson or Sun Studio tour, this will likely add an additional 60-90 minutes to your itinerary. Spend 4-5 hours downtown for a full experience.

South Main Street Neighborhood

While experiencing downtown Memphis, consider hopping on the local trolley not only to experience this cool public transportation option but also to head to the artsy South Main Street neighborhood.

This one-square-mile neighborhood is home to a number of cool arts and culture spots along with a variety of local, authentic restaurants and coffee shops.

South Main Street is one of many distinctive neighborhoods that you may want to explore during your visit to Memphis but again, it’s all dependent on how much time you have.

We highly recommend visiting Bluff City Coffee & Bakery to enjoy a customized espresso before taking a stroll across South Main Street to experience the Civil Rights Movement. Did you know that the South Main Street neighborhood was home to the National Civil Rights Museum, a spot dedicated to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King who was tragically shot in 1968 at the Lorraine Motel?

Take some time to commemorate this spot where MLK was fatally shot before heading inside to educate yourself on the Civil Rights Movement.

Length of Time Required: Plan to spend 1-2 hours in this area to experience the architecture, grab a bite to eat and learn all about the importance of MLK in this part of Memphis.

Where to Eat in Memphis?

As you can see, we have prepared a pretty action-packed itinerary for your visit to Memphis. Each of the locations offers something unique and representative of Memphis. You will likely want to sample stereotypical, authentic cuisine while in Memphis and of course, this part of Tennessee is famous for barbecue.

Regardless of your opinion on barbecue food, you need to sample local fare in Memphis before making a decision on whether you like it or not. Head to Jim Neely’s Interstate Bar-B-Q or Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous if you want to sample some of the best that Memphis has to offer. Don’t worry, if you can’t fit either of these into your itinerary, there are plenty others that you will stumble across.

If barbecue just doesn’t sound appealing, we strongly recommend visiting Huey’s Restaurant to sample their world famous burgers or a variety of other menu options. There are several locations throughout Memphis, one of which is located downtown Memphis and perfectly situated to enjoy lunch or dinner before exploring other parts of Memphis. The sunshine burger is perhaps my favorite Huey burger but you really can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

Ready for dessert? Check out our collection of places to indulge in the best ice cream in Memphis. My favorite spot is Sheridan’s Frozen Custard but again, there are plenty of choices to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Nashville – Experience the Best of Music City

Memphis may be renowned as the “Home of Rock N’ Roll” but it’s actually Nashville that is known as “Music City.” For those of you that have never visited Nashville, let’s start by emphasizing this modern city is more than just a hub for country music.

Yes, Nashville is home to many of the world’s best country artists and it’s no surprise that the Country Music Hall of Fame is located in downtown Nashville but it’s actually a negative stereotype to associate this city with just this genre of music.

Nashville is proud to be home to a myriad of music genres along with a plethora of other reasons why visitors will fall in love with Music City. Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do after hopping across I-40.

The Parthenon

Nashville may be the home of country music (and proud of it!) but it’s also home a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon. Located in Centennial Park, this gorgeous architectural masterpiece was constructed in 1897 by a former Confederate veteran William Crawford Smith as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.

Take a stroll around the park and admire this structure that stands proudly in the heart of this urban green space.

However, for those of you that want a little more up close and personal interaction with the Parthenon in Nashville, head inside and experience a self-guided tour of the art museum before climbing to the top floor and seeing the pièce de résistance with the 42-foot statue of Athena, just as it was in the original in Greece!

Length of Time Required: 1-2 hours! You can spend as much time as you want in and around Centennial Park but if you are focused solely on exploring the Parthenon, you can experience both inside and out in less than 2 hours.

Downtown Nashville

From the iconic Country Music Hall of Fame to the hustle and bustle of nightlife along Broadway, exploring downtown Nashville is certainly an experience you won’t want to miss when you head to Music City.

Take a stroll across the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge to appreciate the stunning views of the Nashville skyline from across the Cumberland River before heading back to enjoy the best downtown Nashville attractions.

Broadway is an experience both during the day and again at night. Hop inside Ernest Tubbs Record Shop before visiting the various bars where you never quite know which aspiring musician you will see perform.

The original Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium can be found in downtown Nashville while Printer’s Alley is a spot worth visiting to enjoy a showcase of more talented musicians.

Length of Time Required: 4 hours will give you enough time to walk around downtown, enjoy lunch and also have the opportunity to experience either the Johnny Cash Museum or the Country Music Hall of Fame. Don’t forget to head into the Goo Goo Cluster shop for a local delicacy!

Bicentennial Mall and State Capitol

Nashville is also home to the Tennessee State Capitol and if you love architecture, this is definitely a building worth exploring. If you plan on spending quite a bit of your time downtown Nashville, you can either take the short drive to Bicentennial Mall or even walk to appreciate some of the other iconic landmarks around this part of Nashville.

Learn all about Tennessee’s history through a 200-foot granite map, a World War II Memorial, 95-Bell Carillon, a Pathway of History and the Rivers of Tennessee Fountains. Bicentennial Mall State Park also features a 2,000-seat amphitheater with gorgeous views of the Nashville skyline and State Capitol building.

Climb the steps that lead up to the State Capitol to admire memorials of Tennessee’s former presidents (Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson have monuments while James K. Polk was actually buried on the grounds).

Where to Eat in Nashville?

I think it’s fair to say that when you visit Nashville, you will literally be spoiled for choice when it comes to cuisine options. Our top recommendation to experience stereotypical Nashville “hot chicken” is to visit Hattie B’s. Be prepared to line up outside for a while but trust us when we say it’s well worth the wait. The challenge is figuring out just how daring you want to be with your “hot” sauce selection on the tender chicken.

If the thought of hot and extra spicy chicken doesn’t appeal, don’t worry because Nashville is home to an eclectic range of other cuisine choices. Calypso Cafe is a great choice to sample Jamaican cuisine while The Soda Parlor is an extremely popular choice among locals and visitors alike if you have a sweet tooth.

Summary

It’s fair to say that you could easily spend several days in both Memphis and Nashville but this is all about showing how you can experience the best of both cities during a long weekend. Depending on how much flexibility you have with your itinerary will determine exactly what you want to accomplish but we want to emphasize that a road trip between Bluff City and Music City is a great way to experience the best of both.

Downham, Lancashire – How to Enjoy This Charming Village?

When you think about stereotypical English villages, I am sure you all have an idea in your mind as to what they look like. Historic country cottages, an idyllic church in the heart of the village where locals gather every Sunday and a river running through the center are perhaps at the forefront of your mind. All of these are true but there is nothing quite like experiencing a charming English village for yourself. During our recent visit to England, we explored the extraordinary village of Downham, Lancashire. We want to share our experiences here and perhaps inspire you to visit Downham during a future visit to the UK.

Where is Downham, Lancashire?

Located in the heart of the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, Downham epitomizes the idyllic village stereotype that we all love to associate with England. To give you a better perspective on this location, Downham is located 30 miles north of Manchester and within a short distance of the Lancashire towns of Preston and Blackburn.

For those of you opting to fly into Manchester Airport, you can reach this part of Lancashire within 45-60 minutes and just like many other cities in the UK, it doesn’t take long to be away from the hustle and bustle of city life and exploring rural England.

We spent much of our recent visit to England exploring the very best of Lancashire. For the first 23 years of my life, Lancashire is where I called home and I’m proud to be able to go back and explore all of the very best parts with Heather now! The beauty of visiting villages like Downham is that even if you choose to only spend a short time there, you are within close driving distance to other iconic places.

Why not consider hopping across the Yorkshire county line to visit Skipton market or perhaps the idyllic village of Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters?

History

The history of Downham dates back to the mid-15th century and the Assheton family who are responsible for the village and surrounding estate. The manor has been in the family’s ownership since 1558. The historic village hall is a great location today for locals and visitors alike to enjoy parties and celebrations.

The drive to Downham is spectacular but nothing can prepare you for the magical experience once you arrive in this quaint village. While much of the UK has advanced with technology, modern-day architecture etc.

Downham has continued to embrace the rich history of the picturesque cottages and photogenic natural scenery that surrounds the village. An untouched landscape of natural beauty epitomizes Downham and the surrounding Ribble Valley.

Charming Village of Downham

Arriving in Downham, the first challenge is trying to find a parking space. But don’t worry, this is not a village that will be full of tourists trying to scramble around and capture pictures like many other infamous spots in the UK. Instead, you may well have Downham to yourself, except for the few locals that are going about their daily life and perhaps a few hens or other animals wandering around the surrounding farmland.

In addition to the residential properties that are maintained in pristine condition, the impressive sight of St. Leonard’s Church at the top of the village is a landmark worth exploring.

The “hen” that I referenced is likely wandering around the graveyard but the real attraction is admiring the church tower that dates back to the 15th-century. The rest of the church was constructed in 1910.

Enjoy a Pint in The Assheton Arms

Take a stroll around the village before heading to The Assheton Arms to enjoy a pint of their finest local brews. Mingle with the locals as you learn how this village has continued to thrive in such an unspoiled state.

All too frequently we see villages like this destroyed by modernization, yet on the contrary, Downham’s only flaw is that it continues to lie in the shadow of Pendle Hill that towers in the background.

The story of Pendle Hill and the associated witches can be left for another day but it’s yet another intriguing twist regarding the village of Downham and surrounding area that visitors would be interested to hear local stories on this very topic.

Famous Filming Location

The beauty of Downham is such that it has been used as a location in several films, the most famous being “Whistle Down the Wind” starring Alan Bates and Hayley Mills. Locals suggest that the surrounding scenery was an inspiration to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings saga, though the Hobbiton region in New Zealand’s North Island may argue otherwise.

Regardless of your desire to learn more about Downham as a filming location, it’s apparent that the inherent beauty of this village is the perfect spot to film that magical, memorable scene.

Photographer’s Dream Location

If you love photography, Downham is perhaps the perfect location in Lancashire to capture breathtaking images. Head across the brook that meanders through the village and as you peer through your camera, you will immediately realize why this is such a photogenic location. On a gorgeous summer’s day or even in the heart of winter, Downham possesses unique characteristics that help create the ideal photograph that would fit perfectly on any wall in your home.

As you explore Downham, allow yourself to be taken back in time as you consider living in a typical Lancashire village in the 19th century or earlier. Locals mingling in the center of Downham as local farming was a prevalent industry. As you are transported in time to today, you realize that very little has changed.

Take a moment to see locals leaving their doors wide open, almost inviting you into their daily lives yet without a worry of intruders entering. It’s a harsh reality that in most modern day towns, this isn’t even a thought that could enter your mind yet in a village like Downham, it’s simply everyday life.

All of these components help create gorgeous photographs and memories of your visit to what has frequently been renowned as “Lancashire’s most beautiful village.”

Summary

Downham, Lancashire is probably not a village that you are familiar with. I have to admit, I hadn’t heard about this place myself and I lived in Lancashire for 23 years. However, when my mum mentioned this place and referenced that it would likely be a good spot to take photographs, I knew that it was a place we had to check out.

Downham certainly doesn’t disappoint and if anything, far exceeds any expectations you could have before visiting such an idyllic village. Although Downham may not be a location you would only visit the UK for, it’s one of those spots worth experiencing during your tour of Lancashire.

Hopefully, this just incentivizes you to add Lancashire to your itinerary when you plan a trip to England because as I constantly remind folks, there is an awful lot more to the UK than just London!

Best Things to Do in Vilnius – How to Enjoy an Awesome Visit?

Don’t you love stumbling across new destinations that you immediately fall in love with and find out that they far exceed any expectations you may have had prior to visiting? This is exactly what we experienced when we left the gorgeous Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. Following an amazing 48 hours in Warsaw, Poland, we headed to Lithuania to experience the very best things to do in Vilnius. Just like the rest of our Baltic states adventure, this was a fast and furious journey around the Lithuanian capital but we certainly got value for money during our stay!

Whether you are an avid historian or simply want to learn about Lithuanian culture, visitors to Vilnius will immediately realize that this is a city stacked full of rich history, heritage, and proud local culture.

Renowned for the myriad of baroque style architecture and the iconic medieval old town, Vilnius is a city that you will find hard not to fall in love with. Let’s take a look at how you can best spend 24 hours in this city (or longer if you are fortunate enough to have a few days in this part of Lithuania).

Where to Stay in Vilnius?

Regardless of where you visit around Europe, you will never be short of accommodation options. Vilnius is no different and ultimately it’s going to come down to three different components – budget, location and hotel style/preference. We think that we have found a hotel that satisfies all three of these but it’s always personal preference and we are slightly biased given that we had an amazing one night stay there.

The Panorama Hotel is situated in the Old Town of Vilnius next to the Gate of Dawn and the Town Hall Square ensuring that guests are in the perfect location to explore the very best of the medieval city.

Things to Do in Vilnius

You have to embrace the history and gorgeous medieval architecture when you explore Vilnius. The majority of our time in Vilnius was spent exploring the “Old Town” and honestly, this is the best part of the city to experience.

I’m sure many of you that are familiar with Vilnius or at least have heard of the Lithuanian capital will know about the stereotypes of Eastern (Northern) Europe. Many of these are negative and associate the Baltic nations as being “underdeveloped.” This is far from the truth and we hope to dismiss all of these stereotypes by sharing our experiences in Vilnius.

Here are some of the landmarks, attractions, and experiences that we encountered during our rapid tour of Vilnius:

Old Town Architecture

Let’s take a look at which each of these spots is significant enough to spend time exploring during your visit to Lithuania.

Gates of Dawn

The Gate of Dawn, also known as Sharp Gate, is a city gate that dates back to the early 16th century. This monument is iconic throughout Vilnius primarily because of its religious affiliation and the intention of artifacts on these gates to prevent attacks and guard the city.

Today, this is frequently referenced as the entrance to Vilnius’ Old Town but regardless of your religious affiliation, this is an architectural masterpiece that you cannot help but appreciate.

Church of St. Anne

If you love gothic architecture, you are in for a real treat when you start exploring Vilnius, particularly when your eyes catch glimpse of the incredible Church of St. Anne. Dating back to the year 1500 when construction was completed, this place of worship was allegedly found by the one and only Napoleon Bonaparte, who claimed to have wanted to take this back to Paris in the palm of his hand.

The reality is of course, very different but we can all live in Napoleon’s dream!

The vivid colors of the red brick are stereotypical of a flamboyant gothic style architecture and this is perhaps the best example across Europe of this particular style. It is an iconic building in Vilnius, not only because of the unmistakable sight of the facade but also because of the importance for locals and visitors alike that want to visit this church to worship.

We caught a glimpse of the inside which consists of a baroque style architecture but the real beauty here is when you take a stroll along the street and admire the exterior of the Church of St. Anne!

Bell Tower of Vilnius Cathedral

The Bell Tower of Vilnius Cathedral is one of the oldest towers in the city and offers gorgeous panoramic views of the Old Town for those interested in climbing to the summit. Standing at 52 meters (170 feet) in height, it towers above the Cathedral Square and is a popular attraction for visitors.

Aside from the spectacular views, the history of this Bell Tower is what makes this such an attractive landmark. The tower originally formed part of Vilnius’ 13th-century defensive wall, before transitioning to a belfry in the 16th century. For a small admission fee, visitors can climb the staircase to the summit and appreciate the very best of Vilnius.

Vilnius Cathedral

The Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius is an incredible landmark in the heart of the Old Town. Although the original cathedral dates back to the mid 13th-century, the current construction was completed in 1783.

The neoclassical style is epitomized throughout the design and in 1922, this cathedral was granted the title of “Basilica” by Pope Pius XI.

Many key figures in Lithuanian history are buried underneath the cathedral, notably, the remains of Vytautas The Great, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and King Alexander of Poland. The interior of the cathedral is breathtaking and well worth taking some time to explore.

Cathedral Square

In terms of public life in Vilnius, there is no other place more iconic than Cathedral Square for locals to pass through and interact among themselves. This is a regular location for military parades, religious festivals, and other public events.

It is not only the most lively and important location in Vilnius but is also one of the most significant and widely known among visitors to Lithuania.

In addition to being the location of Vilnius Cathedral and corresponding Bell Tower, Cathedral Square is home to a number of monuments depicting iconic figures in Lithuanian history. The bronze monument of Gediminas, for example, represents one of the first rulers of Lithuania.

Gediminas’ Tower was closed due to renovation during our visit but this is yet another iconic landmark close to Cathedral Square.

Three Crosses

The Hill of Three Crosses is an unmistakable sight on top of a hill overlooking the city of Vilnius. These are not just a spectacular sight but also a reflection and representation of national identity and resistance to the occupation. They were initially placed in this location in memory of seven Franciscan monks who were murdered in pagan Lithuania.

History suggests that these crosses were first constructed in the 14th century yet were destroyed in 1950. Located in Kalnu Park, it’s fair to say that it’s a challenging ascent to reach the summit but once you arrive at the Three Crosses, you cannot help but appreciate the breathtaking views across Vilnius.

Old Town Architecture

Be sure you spend plenty of time just allowing yourself to get lost around the old streets of Vilnius. There are so many charming “back streets” that you can wander down and admire the gorgeous architecture.

Hop inside a coffee shop such as Caffeine Roasters and enjoy one of your favorite espresso beverages while interacting with locals who we found to be an incredibly friendly bunch.

If you are fortunate enough to visit Vilnius at Christmas, you can enjoy the Christmas markets where local vendors sell their homemade products. This is a great place to buy souvenirs as they are cheaper than souvenir shops scattered around the Old Town.

Summary

After spending an amazing day in Vilnius, our Baltic state adventure continued on to the Latvia where we spent another epic 24 hours in Riga. You will see many similarities among the Baltic cities, Tallinn included but each one has unique characteristics local to that nation.

Vilnius is a city full of character and a rich history. You could easily spend several days exploring everything this city has to offer and we look forward to having the opportunity to return in the future to explore in more detail.
